किमागमनकृत्यं ते कौरव्यकुलनन्दिनि। मणिपूरपतेर्मातुस्तथैव च रणाजिरे ॥१४-८२-१॥
kim-āgamana-kṛtyaṃ te kauravya-kula-nandini. maṇipūra-pater mātus tathaiva ca raṇājire ॥14-82-1॥
[किम् (kim) - what; आगमनकृत्यम् (āgamana-kṛtyam) - purpose of coming; ते (te) - your; कौरव्यकुलनन्दिनि (kauravya-kula-nandini) - O delight of the Kaurava family; मणिपूरपतेः (maṇipūra-pateḥ) - of the lord of Manipura; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - on the battlefield;]
(What purpose of coming, for you, O delight of the Kaurava family? Of the mother of the lord of Manipura, likewise, and on the battlefield.)
O delight of the Kaurava family, what is your purpose for coming? Similarly, what about the mother of the lord of Manipura, and in the same way, on the battlefield? (14-82-1)
कच्चित्कुशलकामासि राज्ञोऽस्य भुजगात्मजे। मम वा चञ्चलापाङ्गे कच्चित्त्वं शुभमिच्छसि ॥१४-८२-२॥
kaccit kuśala-kāmā asi rājño 'sya bhujagātmaje। mama vā cañcalāpāṅge kaccit tvaṁ śubham icchasi ॥14-82-2॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; perhaps; कुशलकाम (kuśala-kāmā) - desirous of welfare; असि (asi) - you are; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; अस्य (asya) - of him; his; भुजगात्मजे (bhujagātmaje) - O daughter of the serpent (nāga); मम (mama) - of me; my; वा (vā) - or; चञ्चलापाङ्गे (cañcalāpāṅge) - O restless-eyed one; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; perhaps; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शुभम् (śubham) - welfare; good; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Whether desirous of welfare you are for the king, O daughter of the serpent; or for me, O restless-eyed one, whether you desire good.)
O daughter of the serpent, are you wishing well for the king, or, O restless-eyed one, do you wish good for me? (14-82-2)
कच्चित्ते पृथुलश्रोणि नाप्रियं शुभदर्शने। अकार्षमहमज्ञानादयं वा बभ्रुवाहनः ॥१४-८२-३॥
kaccitte pṛthulaśroṇi nāpriyaṃ śubhadarśane. akārṣamahamajñānādayaṃ vā babhruvāhanaḥ ॥14-82-3॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - perhaps; surely; ते (te) - to you; पृथुलश्रोणि (pṛthulaśroṇi) - O broad-hipped (one); न (na) - not; अप्रियं (apriyaṃ) - unpleasant; disagreeable; शुभदर्शने (śubhadarśane) - O auspicious-faced; अकार्षम् (akārṣam) - did I do; अहम् (aham) - I; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - out of ignorance; अयम् (ayam) - this; वा (vā) - or; बभ्रुवाहनः (babhruvāhanaḥ) - Babhruvahana;]
(Surely to you, O broad-hipped one, not unpleasant, O auspicious-faced, did I do out of ignorance or this Babhruvahana.)
Surely, O broad-hipped and auspicious-faced one, I have not done anything unpleasant to you out of ignorance, or has Babhruvahana (done so)? (14-82-3)
कच्चिच्च राजपुत्री ते सपत्नी चैत्रवाहिनी। चित्राङ्गदा वरारोहा नापराध्यति किञ्चन ॥१४-८२-४॥
kaccic ca rājaputrī te sapatnī caitravāhinī। citrāṅgadā varārohā nāparādhyati kiñcana॥14-82-4॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - may it be (the case); च (ca) - and; or (emphatic particle); राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; daughter of a king; ते (te) - your; सपत्नी (sapatnī) - co-wife; fellow wife; चैत्रवाहिनी (caitravāhinī) - Caitravāhinī (proper name, or 'one who flows in Chaitra'); चित्राङ्गदा (citrāṅgadā) - Citrāṅgadā (proper name); वरारोहा (varārohā) - of excellent gait; of beautiful form; न (na) - not; अपराध्यति (aparādhyati) - commits an offense; does wrong; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(May it be, and the princess, your co-wife Caitravāhinī, Citrāṅgadā of beautiful form, not commits any offense.)
May your co-wife the princess Caitravāhinī, Citrāṅgadā of beautiful form, not be committing any offense in any way. (14-82-4)
तमुवाचोरगपतेर्दुहिता प्रहसन्त्यथ। न मे त्वमपराद्धोऽसि न नृपो बभ्रुवाहनः ॥ न जनित्री तथास्येयं मम या प्रेष्यवत्स्थिता ॥१४-८२-५॥
tam uvāca uragapater duhitā prahasanty atha। na me tvam aparāddho'si na nṛpo babhruvāhanaḥ॥ na janitrī tathāsyeyaṁ mama yā preṣyavat sthitā॥14-82-5॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; उरगपतेः (uragapateḥ) - of the lord of serpents; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; प्रहसन्ति (prahasanti) - smiling; अथ (atha) - then; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपराद्धः (aparāddhaḥ) - offended; असि (asi) - are; न (na) - not; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; बभ्रुवाहनः (babhruvāhanaḥ) - Babhruvāhana; न (na) - not; जनित्री (janitrī) - mother; तथा (tathā) - so; अस्य (asya) - his; इयम् (iyam) - this; मम (mama) - my; या (yā) - who; प्रेष्यवत् (preṣyavat) - like a servant; स्थिताः (sthitā) - standing;]
(To him the daughter of the lord of serpents said, smiling then: "Not to me you are offended, nor the king Babhruvāhana. Nor is this my mother of his, she who stands like a servant." (14-82-5))
Then, smiling, the daughter of the lord of serpents said to him: "Neither you nor King Babhruvāhana have done me any wrong, nor is this woman, who stands here like a servant, my mother." (14-82-5)
श्रूयतां यद्यथा चेदं मया सर्वं विचेष्टितम्। न मे कोपस्त्वया कार्यः शिरसा त्वां प्रसादये ॥१४-८२-६॥
śrūyatāṃ yadyathā cedam mayā sarvaṃ viceṣṭitam। na me kopastvayā kāryaḥ śirasā tvāṃ prasādaye॥ 14-82-6॥
[श्रूयतां (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; यद्यथा (yadyathā) - as exactly as; च (ca) - and; इदं (idam) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; विचेष्टितम् (viceṣṭitam) - acted; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्रसादये (prasādaye) - I propitiate;]
(Let it be heard as exactly as this by me all acted. Not to me anger by you should be done. With the head you I propitiate. (14-82-6))
Hear from me exactly all that I have done. You should not be angry with me; with my head bowed, I beg you for pardon. (14-82-6)
त्वत्प्रीत्यर्थं हि कौरव्य कृतमेतन्मयानघ। यत्तच्छृणु महाबाहो निखिलेन धनञ्जय ॥१४-८२-७॥
tvat-prīty-arthaṃ hi kauravya kṛtam etan mayā anagha। yat tat śṛṇu mahā-bāho nikhilena dhanañjaya ॥14-82-7॥
[त्वत्प्रीत्यर्थम् (tvat-prīty-artham) - for your pleasure; for the sake of pleasing you; हि (hi) - indeed; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; एतत् (etat) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; यत् (yat) - what; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; महाबाहो (mahā-bāho) - O mighty-armed one; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - entirely; in full; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya;]
(For your pleasure indeed, O Kauravya, this was done by me, O sinless one. What that (is), hear, O mighty-armed one, entirely, O Dhananjaya.)
Indeed, O Kauravya, I have done this for your pleasure, O sinless one. Hear in full what it is, O mighty-armed Dhananjaya. (14-82-7)
महाभारतयुद्धे यत्त्वया शान्तनवो नृपः। अधर्मेण हतः पार्थ तस्यैषा निष्कृतिः कृता ॥१४-८२-८॥
mahābhāratayuddhe yat tvayā śāntanavo nṛpaḥ | adharmeṇa hataḥ pārtha tasya eṣā niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā ॥14-82-8॥
[महाभारतयुद्धे (mahābhāratayuddhe) - in the Mahābhārata war; यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - the son of Śāntanu; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; हतः (hataḥ) - was killed; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; तस्य (tasya) - of him; एषा (eṣā) - this; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - atonement; कृता (kṛtā) - has been done;]
(In the Mahābhārata war, which by you the son of Śāntanu, the king, by unrighteousness was killed, O son of Pṛthā, for him this atonement has been done.)
O Pārtha, in the Mahābhārata war, the king, the son of Śāntanu, whom you killed unjustly—this is the atonement that has been performed for him. (14-82-8)
न हि भीष्मस्त्वया वीर युध्यमानो निपातितः। शिखण्डिना तु संसक्तस्तमाश्रित्य हतस्त्वया ॥१४-८२-९॥
na hi bhīṣmaḥ tvayā vīra yudhyamānaḥ nipātitaḥ। śikhaṇḍinā tu saṁsaktaḥ tam āśritya hataḥ tvayā॥14-82-9॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वीर (vīra) - O hero; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - fighting; निपातितः (nipātitaḥ) - slain; शिखण्डिना (śikhaṇḍinā) - by Shikhandin; तु (tu) - but; संसक्तः (saṁsaktaḥ) - being engaged; तम् (tam) - him; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having depended upon; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Not indeed Bhishma by you, O hero, fighting, was slain. By Shikhandin but, being engaged, him having depended upon, killed by you.)
Bhishma was not slain by you, O hero, while he was fighting, but being engaged by Shikhandin and relying on him, he was killed by you. (14-82-9)
तस्य शान्तिमकृत्वा तु त्यजेस्त्वं यदि जीवितम्। कर्मणा तेन पापेन पतेथा निरये ध्रुवम् ॥१४-८२-१०॥
tasya śāntim akṛtvā tu tyajeḥ tvaṃ yadi jīvitam। karmaṇā tena pāpena patethā niraye dhruvam ॥14-82-10॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - pacification; अकृत्वा (akṛtvā) - not having done; तु (tu) - but; त्यजेः (tyajeḥ) - you should abandon; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; यदि (yadi) - if; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by deed; तेन (tena) - by that; पापेन (pāpena) - by sin; पतेथा (patethā) - you would fall; निरये (niraye) - in hell; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(Of him pacification not having done but you should abandon you if life. By deed by that sinful you would fall in hell certainly.)
But if you, not having made peace with him, should abandon your life, by that sinful act you will certainly fall into hell. (14-82-10)
एषा तु विहिता शान्तिः पुत्राद्यां प्राप्तवानसि। वसुभिर्वसुधापाल गङ्गया च महामते ॥१४-८२-११॥
eṣā tu vihitā śāntiḥ putrādyāṃ prāptavān asi। vasubhir vasudhāpāla gaṅgayā ca mahāmate ॥14-82-11॥
[एषा (eṣā) - this; (feminine, nominative singular); तु (tu) - but; however; विहिता (vihitā) - established; performed; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; pacification; (feminine, nominative singular); पुत्राद्यां (putrādyām) - in regards to son, etc.; (locative singular, feminine; putra-ādi); प्राप्तवानसि (prāptavān asi) - you have obtained; (perfect participle masculine singular + verb 'to be', second person singular); वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - with treasures; with riches; (instrumental plural, neuter); वसुधापाल (vasudhāpāla) - O protector of the earth; (vocative singular); गङ्गया (gaṅgayā) - with Ganga; by means of Ganga; (instrumental singular, feminine); च (ca) - and; महामते (mahāmate) - O great-minded (one); (vocative singular);]
(This but established peace in relation to son, etc., you have obtained; with treasures, O protector of the earth, with Ganga and, O great-minded one.)
But this peace, established in respect to your son and others, you have obtained—with treasures, O protector of the earth, and through the Ganga, O great-minded one. (14-82-11)
पुरा हि श्रुतमेतद्वै वसुभिः कथितं मया। गङ्गायास्तीरमागम्य हते शान्तनवे नृपे ॥१४-८२-१२॥
purā hi śrutam etad vai vasubhiḥ kathitaṃ mayā। gaṅgāyās tīram āgamya hate śāntanave nṛpe॥14-82-12॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; हि (hi) - indeed; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; एतद् (etad) - this; वै (vai) - truly; वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - by the Vasus; कथितम् (kathitam) - told; मया (mayā) - by me; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; तीरम् (tīram) - bank; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; हते (hate) - when killed; शान्तनवे (śāntanave) - Śāntanu's (son) (i.e., Bhīṣma); नृपे (nṛpe) - king;]
(Formerly indeed this was heard, truly, by the Vasus, told by me, having come to the bank of Gaṅgā, when Śāntanu's son, the king, was killed.)
Long ago, as I have indeed heard, this was related by the Vasus—told by me upon coming to the bank of Gaṅgā, after the king Śāntanu's son was slain. (14-82-12)
आप्लुत्य देवा वसवः समेत्य च महानदीम्। इदमूचुर्वचो घोरं भागीरथ्या मते तदा ॥१४-८२-१३॥
āplutya devā vasavaḥ sametya ca mahānadīm। idam ūcur vaco ghoraṃ bhāgīrathyā mate tadā ॥14-82-13॥
[आप्लुत्य (āplutya) - having bathed in; देवा (devā) - the gods; वसवः (vasavaḥ) - the Vasus; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; च (ca) - and; महानदीम् (mahānadīm) - in the great river; इदम् (idam) - this; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they spoke; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; भागीरथ्या (bhāgīrathyā) - to Bhāgīrathī (the river Ganges); मते (mate) - in the presence of; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having bathed, the gods and the Vasus, having assembled and in the great river, this spoke words terrible to Bhāgīrathī's presence then.)
Having bathed, the gods and the Vasus, having gathered together in the great river, then spoke these terrible words in the presence of Bhāgīrathī. (14-82-13)
एष शान्तनवो भीष्मो निहतः सव्यसाचिना। अयुध्यमानः सङ्ग्रामे संसक्तोऽन्येन भामिनि ॥१४-८२-१४॥
eṣa śāntanavo bhīṣmo nihataḥ savyasācinā। ayudhyamānaḥ saṅgrāme saṃsakto'nyena bhāmini ॥14-82-14॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; सव्यसाचिना (savyasācinā) - by Savyasācin (Arjuna); अयुध्यमानः (ayudhyamānaḥ) - not fighting; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; संसक्तः (saṃsaktaḥ) - engaged; अन्येन (anyena) - with another; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O spirited one;]
(This son of Śāntanu, Bhīṣma, slain by Savyasācin (Arjuna), not fighting, in battle, engaged with another, O spirited one.)
O spirited one, this Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, was slain in battle by Savyasācin (Arjuna) while he was not fighting and was engaged with another. (14-82-14)
तदनेनाभिषङ्गेण वयमप्यर्जुनं शुभे। शापेन योजयामेति तथास्त्विति च साब्रवीत् ॥१४-८२-१५॥
tadanenābhiṣaṅgeṇa vayam apy arjunaṁ śubhe। śāpena yojayāmeti tathāstv iti ca sābravīt॥14-82-15॥
[तद (tad) - that; अनेन (anena) - by this; अभिषङ्गेण (abhiṣaṅgeṇa) - by the attachment; वयम् (vayam) - we; अपि (api) - also; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; शापेन (śāpena) - by a curse; योजयाम (yojayām) - let us join; इति (iti) - thus; तथास्तु (tathāstu) - so be it; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(That by this attachment we also Arjuna, O auspicious one, by a curse let us join thus; so be it thus and she said.)
O auspicious one, let us also bind Arjuna with a curse through this attachment; thus, "so be it," she said. (14-82-15)
तदहं पितुरावेद्य भृशं प्रव्यथितेन्द्रिया। अभवं स च तच्छ्रुत्वा विषादमगमत्परम् ॥१४-८२-१६॥
tad ahaṃ pitur āvedya bhṛśaṃ pravyathitendriyā। abhavaṃ sa ca tac chrutvā viṣādam agamat param ॥14-82-16॥
[तत् (tad) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; पितुः (pituḥ) - to my father; आवेद्य (āvedya) - having reported; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; प्रव्यथितेन्द्रिया (pravyathitendriyā) - with greatly disturbed senses; अभवम् (abhavam) - I became; सः (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विषादम् (viṣādam) - despondency; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(That I, having reported to my father, with greatly disturbed senses, became. He also, having heard that, supreme despondency attained.)
So, I reported it to my father, being greatly disturbed in my senses. I was overcome, and he, on hearing that, fell into utmost despondency. (14-82-16)
पिता तु मे वसून्गत्वा त्वदर्थं समयाचत। पुनः पुनः प्रसाद्यैनांस्त एनमिदमब्रुवन् ॥१४-८२-१७॥
pitā tu me vasūn gatvā tvad-arthaṃ samayācata। punaḥ punaḥ prasādya enān te enam idam abruvan ॥14-82-17॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - my; वसून् (vasūn) - the Vasus; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; त्वदर्थम् (tvad-artham) - for your sake; समयाचत (samayācata) - he requested; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; एतान् (etān) - them; ते (te) - they; एनम् (enam) - him; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said;]
(Father but my the Vasus having gone for your sake he requested. Again again having propitiated them they him this said.)
But my father, having gone to the Vasus for your sake, requested them. Again and again propitiating them, they said this to him. (14-82-17)
पुनस्तस्य महाभाग मणिपूरेश्वरो युवा। स एनं रणमध्यस्थं शरैः पातयिता भुवि ॥१४-८२-१८॥
punas tasya mahābhāga maṇipūreśvaro yuvā। sa enaṃ raṇamadhyasthaṃ śaraiḥ pātayitā bhuvi ॥14-82-18॥
[पुनः (punas) - again; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - most fortunate; मणिपूरेश्वरः (maṇipūreśvaraḥ) - the lord of Maṇipura; युवा (yuvā) - the young; सः (sa) - he; एनम् (enam) - this (one); रणमध्यस्थम् (raṇamadhyastham) - standing in the middle of battle; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; पातयिता (pātayitā) - will cause to fall; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Again, of him, most fortunate, the lord of Maṇipura, young; he, this one, standing in the middle of battle, with arrows, will cause to fall on the ground.)
Again, the most fortunate young lord of Maṇipura will cause him, standing in the middle of battle, to fall to the ground with arrows. (14-82-18)
एवं कृते स नागेन्द्र मुक्तशापो भविष्यति। गच्छेति वसुभिश्चोक्तो मम चेदं शशंस सः ॥१४-८२-१९॥
evaṁ kṛte sa nāgendra muktaśāpo bhaviṣyati. gaccheti vasubhiś cokto mama cedaṁ śaśaṁsa saḥ ॥14-82-19॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; कृते (kṛte) - having been done; स (sa) - he; नागेन्द्र (nāgendra) - the lord of serpents; मुक्तशापः (muktaśāpaḥ) - freed from the curse; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; इति (iti) - so; वसुभि (vasubhi) - by the Vasus; च (ca) - and; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; मम (mama) - to me; च (ca) - also; इदं (idaṁ) - this; शशंस (śaśaṁsa) - told; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Thus, having been done, he, the lord of serpents, will become freed from the curse. "Go," so addressed by the Vasus and also to me this he told.)
Thus, when this was done, that serpent lord would be freed from the curse. He was told "Go" by the Vasus, and he also narrated this to me. (14-82-19)
तच्छ्रुत्वा त्वं मया तस्माच्छापादसि विमोक्षितः। न हि त्वां देवराजोऽपि समरेषु पराजयेत् ॥१४-८२-२०॥
tacchrutvā tvaṁ mayā tasmācchāpād asi vimokṣitaḥ। na hi tvāṁ devarājo'pi samareṣu parājayet ॥14-82-20॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; असि (asi) - you are; विमोक्षितः (vimokṣitaḥ) - released; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of gods; अपि (api) - even; समरेषु (samareṣu) - in battles; पराजयेत् (parājayet) - could defeat;]
(That having heard, you by me from that curse are released. Not indeed you even the king of gods in battles could defeat.)
Having heard that, you have been released by me from that curse. Indeed, not even the king of the gods could defeat you in battle. (14-82-20)
आत्मा पुत्रः स्मृतस्तस्मात्तेनेहासि पराजितः। नात्र दोषो मम मतः कथं वा मन्यसे विभो ॥१४-८२-२१॥
ātmā putraḥ smṛtastas mā ttene hāsi parājitaḥ। nātra doṣo mama mataḥ kathaṃ vā manyase vibho ॥14-82-21॥

(Self son is considered therefore by him here you are defeated not here fault my opinion how or you think O lord)
The self is regarded as the son; therefore, by him you are defeated here. In my opinion, there is no fault here. How do you think, O lord? (14-82-21)
इत्येवमुक्तो विजयः प्रसन्नात्माब्रवीदिदम्। सर्वं मे सुप्रियं देवि यदेतत्कृतवत्यसि ॥१४-८२-२२॥
ityevamukto vijayaḥ prasannātmābravīdidam। sarvaṃ me supriyaṃ devi yadetatkṛtavatyasi ॥14-82-22॥
[इति एवम् उक्तः (iti evam uktaḥ) - thus in this way addressed; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya (proper name); प्रसन्नात्मा (prasannātmā) - with a clear mind; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; मे (me) - to me; सुप्रियम् (supriyam) - very dear; देवि (devi) - O goddess; यत् (yat) - whatever; एतत् (etat) - this; कृतवत्य् असि (kṛtavaty asi) - you have done;]
(Thus, having been so addressed, Vijaya, with a clear mind, spoke this: "Everything that you have done, O goddess, is very dear to me." (14-82-22))
Thus, when addressed in this way, Vijaya, with a cheerful mind, said: "O goddess, everything that you have done is most pleasing to me." (14-82-22)
इत्युक्त्वाथाब्रवीत्पुत्रं मणिपूरेश्वरं जयः। चित्राङ्गदायाः शृण्वन्त्याः कौरव्यदुहितुस्तथा ॥१४-८२-२३॥

(Thus having spoken, then Jaya (Arjuna) said to his son, the lord of Maṇipura; of Citrāṅgadā, while listening, of the daughter of Kauravya likewise.)
Having thus spoken, then Jaya (Arjuna) addressed his son, the lord of Maṇipura, while Citrāṅgadā, the daughter of Kauravya, likewise listened. (14-82-23)
युधिष्ठिरस्याश्वमेधः परां चैत्रीं भविष्यति। तत्रागच्छेः सहामात्यो मातृभ्यां सहितो नृप ॥१४-८२-२४॥
yudhiṣṭhirasya aśvamedhaḥ parāṃ caitrīṃ bhaviṣyati। tatra agaccheḥ saha-amātyaḥ mātṛbhyāṃ sahitaḥ nṛpa ॥14-82-24॥
[युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; अश्वमेधः (aśvamedhaḥ) - horse sacrifice; परां (parām) - the highest; चैत्रीं (caitrīm) - belonging to Caitra (month); भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; तत्र (tatra) - there; आगच्छेः (āgaccheḥ) - you should come; सहामात्यः (saha-amātyaḥ) - with ministers; मातृभ्यां (mātṛbhyām) - with (two) mothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Of Yudhiṣṭhira, the horse sacrifice, the highest (rite), of Caitra (month), will be. There, you should come with ministers, with (your) mothers together, O king.)
Yudhiṣṭhira's horse sacrifice, which is the highest, will take place during the month of Caitra. There, O king, you should come together with your ministers and both your mothers. (14-82-24)
इत्येवमुक्तः पार्थेन स राजा बभ्रुवाहनः। उवाच पितरं धीमानिदमस्राविलेक्षणः ॥१४-८२-२५॥
ity evam uktaḥ pārthena sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ। uvāca pitaraṃ dhīmān idam asrāvilekṣaṇaḥ॥14-82-25॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha; सः (saḥ) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; बभ्रुवाहनः (babhruvāhanaḥ) - Babhruvāhana; उवाच (uvāca) - said; पितरम् (pitaraṃ) - to (his) father; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; इदम् (idam) - this; अस्राविल-एक्षणः (asrāvil-ekṣaṇaḥ) - with tear-filled eyes;]
(Thus, having been addressed in this manner by Pārtha, that king Babhruvāhana, wise, with tear-filled eyes, said this to his father.)
Having been addressed thus by Pārtha, the wise king Babhruvāhana, with tear-filled eyes, spoke these words to his father. (14-82-25)
उपयास्यामि धर्मज्ञ भवतः शासनादहम्। अश्वमेधे महायज्ञे द्विजातिपरिवेषकः ॥१४-८२-२६॥
upayāsyāmi dharmajña bhavataḥ śāsanād aham। aśvamedhe mahāyajñe dvijāti-pariveṣakaḥ ॥14-82-26॥
[उपयास्यामि (upayāsyāmi) - I shall approach; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by command; अहम् (aham) - I; अश्वमेधे (aśvamedhe) - in the Aśvamedha; महायज्ञे (mahāyajñe) - great sacrifice; द्विजातिपरिवेषकः (dvijāti-pariveṣakaḥ) - server (pariveṣaka, one who serves food) of the twice-born;]
(I shall approach, O knower of dharma, by your command, in the great sacrifice, the Aśvamedha, as the server of the twice-born.)
By your command, O knower of dharma, I will come to serve the twice-born as the food server during the great sacrifice, the Aśvamedha. (14-82-26)
मम त्वनुग्रहार्थाय प्रविशस्व पुरं स्वकम्। भार्याभ्यां सह शत्रुघ्न मा भूत्तेऽत्र विचारणा ॥१४-८२-२७॥
mama tvanugrahārthāya praviśasva puraṃ svakam। bhāryābhyāṃ saha śatrughna mā bhūtte'tra vicāraṇā ॥14-82-27॥
[मम (mama) - my; त्वनुग्रहार्थाय (tva-anugraha-arthāya) - for your favor; प्रविशस्व (praviśasva) - enter; पुरं (puraṃ) - city; स्वकम् (svakam) - your own; भार्याभ्यां (bhāryābhyām) - with (your) two wives; सह (saha) - with; शत्रुघ्न (śatrughna) - Śatrughna; मा (mā) - do not; भूत्ते (bhūt te) - let there be to you; ऽत्र (atra) - here; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - deliberation;]
(For my favor, you enter your own city, Śatrughna, with (your) two wives. Let there not be, for you, deliberation here.)
Śatrughna, for my sake, enter your own city with your two wives; do not have any hesitation here. (14-82-27)
उषित्वेह विशल्यस्त्वं सुखं स्वे वेश्मनि प्रभो। पुनरश्वानुगमनं कर्तासि जयतां वर ॥१४-८२-२८॥
uṣitva iha viśalyas tvaṁ sukhaṁ sve veśmani prabho। punar aśvānugamanaṁ kartāsi jayatāṁ vara ॥14-82-28॥
[उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having spent the night; इह (iha) - here; विशल्यः (viśalyaḥ) - free from arrows (wounds); त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; सुखम् (sukham) - comfortably; स्वे (sve) - in your own; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - house; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; पुनः (punar) - again; अश्व (aśva) - horses; अनुगमनम् (anugamanam) - pursuing (following after); कर्तासि (kartāsi) - you will do; जयताम् (jayatām) - of the victorious; वर (vara) - best (chief);]
(Having spent the night here, free from arrows, you, O lord, comfortably in your own house, again the pursuing of horses you will do, O best of the victorious.)
O master, after you have spent the night here, free of wounds, comfortably in your own home, you will once again pursue the horses, O best among the victorious. (14-82-28)
इत्युक्तः स तु पुत्रेण तदा वानरकेतनः। स्मयन्प्रोवाच कौन्तेयस्तदा चित्राङ्गदासुतम् ॥१४-८२-२९॥
ityuktaḥ sa tu putreṇa tadā vānarakētanaḥ। smayanprovāca kauntēyastadā citrāṅgadāsutam ॥14-82-29॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by the son; तदा (tadā) - then; वानरकेतनः (vānarakētanaḥ) - Vānaraketana (Arjuna, ‘he of the monkey-banner’); स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; कौन्तेयः (kauntēyaḥ) - Kaunteya (Arjuna, son of Kunti); तदा (tadā) - then; चित्राङ्गदासुतम् (citrāṅgadāsutam) - to Citrāṅgadā’s son; ॥१४-८२-२९॥ (14-82-29) -;]
(Thus addressed by his son, then Vānaraketana (Arjuna) smiling said, Kaunteya then to Citrāṅgadā’s son.)
Thus addressed by his son, Arjuna, whose banner bore the monkey, smiled and then Kaunteya (Arjuna) spoke to Citrāṅgadā’s son. (14-82-29)
विदितं ते महाबाहो यथा दीक्षां चराम्यहम्। न स तावत्प्रवेक्ष्यामि पुरं ते पृथुलोचन ॥१४-८२-३०॥
viditaṁ te mahābāho yathā dīkṣāṁ carāmyaham। na sa tāvatpravekṣyāmi puraṁ te pṛthulocana ॥14-82-30॥
[विदितं (viditaṁ) - known; ते (te) - to you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यथा (yathā) - as; दीक्षां (dīkṣāṁ) - the vow of initiation; चरामि (carāmi) - I am practicing; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; प्रवेक्ष्यामि (pravekṣyāmi) - I shall enter; पुरं (puraṁ) - the city; ते (te) - your; पृथुलोचन (pṛthulocana) - O wide-eyed;]
(Known to you, O mighty-armed, as the vow of initiation I am practicing I; not he so long I shall enter the city, your, O wide-eyed.)
O mighty-armed, as you know, since I am observing the vow of initiation, I shall not enter your city for so long, O wide-eyed one. (14-82-30)
यथाकामं प्रयात्येष यज्ञियश्च तुरङ्गमः। स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि न स्थानं विद्यते मम ॥१४-८२-३१॥
yathākāmaṃ prayātyeṣa yajñiyaś ca turaṅgamaḥ। svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi na sthānaṃ vidyate mama ॥14-82-31॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in accordance with; just as; कामं (kāmaṃ) - desire; as wished; at will; प्रयाति (prayāti) - goes forth; proceeds; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (he); यज्ञियः (yajñiyaḥ) - sacrificial; fit for sacrifice; च (ca) - and; तुरङ्गमः (turaṅgamaḥ) - horse; steed; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; blessing; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; may it be; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; न (na) - not; स्थानं (sthānaṃ) - place; position; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; मम (mama) - for me; mine;]
(As he wishes, this sacrificial horse proceeds forth; well-being to you, let it be, I shall go; no place exists for me.)
This sacrificial horse goes as he pleases; may all be well with you—now I shall depart, for there is no place for me. (14-82-31)
स तत्र विधिवत्तेन पूजितः पाकशासनिः। भार्याभ्यामभ्यनुज्ञातः प्रायाद्भरतसत्तमः ॥१४-८२-३२॥
sa tatra vidhivattena pūjitaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ। bhāryābhyām abhyanujñātaḥ prāyād bharatasattamaḥ॥14-82-32॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; विधिवत्तेन (vidhivattena) - according to the proper method; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; पाकशासनिः (pākaśāsaniḥ) - the lord of the kitchen (Agni, Fire-god); भार्याभ्याम् (bhāryābhyām) - by the two wives; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; भरतसत्तमः (bharatasattamaḥ) - the foremost of the Bharatas;]
(He, there, by the proper procedure, having been honored (as) the lord of the kitchen; by the two wives, having been permitted, departed, the foremost of the Bharatas.)
There, he, the foremost of the Bharatas, having been honored by the proper procedure as the lord of the kitchen (Agni), and having been permitted by his two wives, departed. (14-82-32)
