Vaiśampāyana said.
प्रायोपविष्टे नृपतौ मणिपूरेश्वरे तदा। पितृशोकसमाविष्टे सह मात्रा परन्तप ॥१४-८१-१॥
prāyopaviṣṭe nṛpatau maṇipūreśvare tadā। pitṛśokasamāviṣṭe saha mātrā parantapa ॥14-81-1॥
[प्रायोपविष्टे (prāyopaviṣṭe) - when having undertaken fasting unto death; नृपतौ (nṛpatau) - on the king; मणिपूरेश्वरे (maṇipūreśvare) - the lord of Maṇipura; तदा (tadā) - then; पितृशोकसमाविष्टे (pitṛśokasamāviṣṭe) - overwhelmed with grief for the father; सह (saha) - together; मात्रा (mātrā) - with the mother; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(When the king, the lord of Maṇipura, had undertaken fasting unto death, then, overwhelmed with grief for the father, together with the mother, O scorcher of foes.)
O scorcher of foes, at that time when the king, lord of Maṇipura, had resolved to fast unto death, overwhelmed by grief for his father along with his mother. (14-81-1)
उलूपी चिन्तयामास तदा सञ्जीवनं मणिम्। स चोपातिष्ठत तदा पन्नगानां परायणम् ॥१४-८१-२॥
ulūpī cintayāmāsa tadā sañjīvanaṃ maṇim। sa copātiṣṭhata tadā pannagānāṃ parāyaṇam ॥14-81-2॥
[उलूपी (ulūpī) - Ulupi; (proper noun, name of a nāga princess); चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; considered; तदा (tadā) - then; सञ्जीवनं (sañjīvanam) - reviving; life-restoring; मणिम् (maṇim) - gem; (accusative singular); सः (saḥ) - he; (referring to the gem); च (ca) - and; उपातिष्ठत (upātiṣṭhata) - approached; attended; तदा (tadā) - then; पन्नगानाम् (pannagānām) - of the serpents; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - resort; refuge;]
(Ulupi thought then about the reviving gem. He and approached then the refuge of the serpents.)
Ulupi then thought of the reviving gem. And then that became the refuge of the serpents. (14-81-2)
तं गृहीत्वा तु कौरव्य नागराजपतेः सुता। मनःप्रह्लादनीं वाचं सैनिकानामथाब्रवीत् ॥१४-८१-३॥
taṁ gṛhītvā tu kauravya nāgarājapateḥ sutā। manaḥprahlādanīṁ vācaṁ sainikānām athābravīt॥14-81-3॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; तु (tu) - but; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; नागराजपतेः (nāgarājapateḥ) - of the lord of the serpent king; सुता (sutā) - daughter; मनःप्रह्लादनीं (manaḥprahlādanīṁ) - pleasing to the mind; वाचं (vācaṁ) - speech; सैनिकानाम् (sainikānām) - of the soldiers; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having seized him but, O descendant of Kuru, the daughter of the lord of the serpent king, speech pleasing to the mind to the soldiers then spoke.)
But having seized him, O descendant of Kuru, the daughter of the lord of the serpent king then spoke words pleasing to the minds of the soldiers. (14-81-3)
उत्तिष्ठ मा शुचः पुत्र नैष जिष्णुस्त्वया हतः। अजेयः पुरुषैरेष देवैर्वापि सवासवैः ॥१४-८१-४॥
uttiṣṭha mā śucaḥ putra naiṣa jiṣṇus tvayā hataḥ। ajeyaḥ puruṣair eṣa devair vāpi savāsavaiḥ॥14-81-4॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; पुत्र (putra) - son; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the conqueror; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हतः (hataḥ) - has been killed; अजेयः (ajeyaḥ) - invincible; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by gods; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; सवासवैः (savāsavaiḥ) - with Indra and others;]
(Arise; do not grieve; son; not this conqueror by you has been killed. Invincible by men this (one), by gods or even with Indra (has been). (14-81-4))
Arise, do not grieve, son; this conqueror has not been killed by you. He is invincible by men, by the gods or even with Indra. (14-81-4)
मया तु मोहिनी नाम मायैषा सम्प्रयोजिता। प्रियार्थं पुरुषेन्द्रस्य पितुस्तेऽद्य यशस्विनः ॥१४-८१-५॥
mayā tu mohinī nāma māyaiṣā samprayojitā। priyārthaṃ puruṣendrasya pituste'dya yaśasvinaḥ ॥14-81-5॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; तु (tu) - but; मोहिनी (mohinī) - the enchantress; नाम (nāma) - named; माया (māyā) - illusion; एषा (eṣā) - this; सम्प्रयोजिता (samprayojitā) - devised; प्रियार्थम् (priyārtham) - for the sake of the beloved; पुरुषेन्द्रस्य (puruṣendrasya) - of the lord of men; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (your) father; ते (te) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - glorious;]
(But by me, this illusion named Mohini has been devised for the sake of the beloved—of your father, the lord of men, today, the glorious one.)
But it is by me that this illusion named Mohini has today been created for the sake of your illustrious father, the lord of men. (14-81-5)
जिज्ञासुर्ह्येष वै पुत्र बलस्य तव कौरवः। सङ्ग्रामे युध्यतो राजन्नागतः परवीरहा ॥१४-८१-६॥
jijñāsur hyeṣa vai putra balasya tava kauravaḥ। saṅgrāme yudhyato rājann āgataḥ paravīrahā॥14-81-6॥
[जिज्ञासुः (jijñāsuḥ) - desirous to know; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; वै (vai) - truly; पुत्र (putra) - O son; बलस्य (balasya) - of the army; तव (tava) - your; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - Kaurava; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; युध्यतः (yudhyataḥ) - while fighting; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(Desirous to know indeed this truly O son, of the army your, Kaurava, in battle while fighting, O king, has come, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
O son, this Kaurava, truly desirous to know about your army, the destroyer of enemy heroes, has come to you, O king, while you are fighting in battle. (14-81-6)
तस्मादसि मया पुत्र युद्धार्थं परिचोदितः। मा पापमात्मनः पुत्र शङ्केथास्त्वण्वपि प्रभो ॥१४-८१-७॥
tasmād asi mayā putra yuddhārthaṃ paricoditaḥ। mā pāpam ātmanaḥ putra śaṅkethās tvaṇv api prabho ॥14-81-7॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; असि (asi) - you are; मया (mayā) - by me; पुत्र (putra) - son; युद्धार्थम् (yuddhārtham) - for the sake of battle; परिचोदितः (paricoditaḥ) - urged; मा (mā) - do not; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself; पुत्र (putra) - son; शङ्केथाः (śaṅkethāḥ) - you should suspect; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अणु अपि (aṇu api) - even a little; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Therefore you are by me, son, for the sake of battle, urged. Do not sin of yourself, son, suspect, you, even a little, O lord.)
Therefore, my son, you have been urged by me to battle; do not suspect even the slightest sin in yourself, O lord. (14-81-7)
ऋषिरेष महातेजाः पुरुषः शाश्वतोऽव्ययः। नैनं शक्तो हि सङ्ग्रामे जेतुं शक्रोऽपि पुत्रक ॥१४-८१-८॥
ṛṣireṣa mahātejāḥ puruṣaḥ śāśvato'vyayaḥ। nainaṃ śakto hi saṅgrāme jetuṃ śakro'pi putraka ॥14-81-8॥
[ऋषि (ṛṣi) - sage; एष (eṣa) - this; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal; अव्ययः (avyayaḥ) - imperishable; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; हि (hi) - indeed; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; अपि (api) - even; पुत्रक (putraka) - dear child;]
(This sage, of great brilliance, the man, eternal, imperishable. Not him able indeed in battle to conquer Indra even, dear child.)
This sage, of great brilliance, is an eternal and imperishable man. Not even Indra, dear child, is able to conquer him in battle. (14-81-8)
अयं तु मे मणिर्दिव्यः समानीतो विशां पते। मृतान्मृतान्पन्नगेन्द्रान्यो जीवयति नित्यदा ॥१४-८१-९॥
ayaṁ tu me maṇir divyaḥ samānītaḥ viśāṁ pate। mṛtān mṛtān pannagendraān yaḥ jīvayati nityadā ॥14-81-9॥
[अयं (ayaṁ) - this; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - my; मणिः (maṇiḥ) - jewel; दिव्यः (divyaḥ) - divine; समानीतः (samānītaḥ) - brought (here); विशाम् (viśām) - of chiefs; पते (pate) - O lord; मृतान् (mṛtān) - dead; मृतान् (mṛtān) - dead; पन्नगेन्द्रान् (pannagendrān) - lordly serpents; यः (yaḥ) - who; जीवयति (jīvayati) - revives; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(This but my jewel divine brought (here), O lord of chiefs, dead dead lordly serpents who revives always.)
But this divine jewel of mine, O lord of chiefs, which has been brought (here), always revives dead lordly serpents. (14-81-9)
एतमस्योरसि त्वं तु स्थापयस्व पितुः प्रभो। सञ्जीवितं पुनः पुत्र ततो द्रष्टासि पाण्डवम् ॥१४-८१-१०॥
etam asya orasi tvaṃ tu sthāpayasva pituḥ prabho। sañjīvitaṃ punaḥ putra tato draṣṭāsi pāṇḍavam ॥14-81-10॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; अस्य (asya) - of this one; उरसि (orasi) - on (the) chest; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तु (tu) - but; स्थापय (sthāpaya) - place; स्व (sva) - your; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; सञ्जीवितम् (sañjīvitam) - revived; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुत्र (putra) - son; ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्रष्टासि (draṣṭāsi) - you will see; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava;]
(This on his chest you but place, of the father, O lord. Revived again, son, then you will see Pāṇḍava.)
But you, O lord, place this on his chest for your father. Revived again, son, then you will see Pāṇḍava. (14-81-10)
इत्युक्तः स्थापयामास तस्योरसि मणिं तदा। पार्थस्यामिततेजाः स पितुः स्नेहादपापकृत् ॥१४-८१-११॥
ity uktaḥ sthāpayām āsa tasya urasi maṇiṁ tadā। pārthasya amita-tejāḥ sa pituḥ snehāt apāpakṛt ॥14-81-11॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स्थापयाम् आस (sthāpayām āsa) - he placed; तस्य (tasya) - his; उरसि (urasi) - on (the) chest; मणिं (maṇiṁ) - gem; तदा (tadā) - then; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); अमिततेजाः (amita-tejāḥ) - of immeasurable brilliance; सः (saḥ) - he; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; स्नेहात् (snehāt) - out of affection; अपापकृत् (apāpakṛt) - one who has not committed evil;]
(Thus having been addressed, he then placed the gem on his chest, Partha's, of immeasurable brilliance, he, out of affection for (his) father, being without evil;)
After being thus addressed, he, of immeasurable brilliance, placed the gem on the chest of Partha, out of affection for his father, for he was free from evil. (14-81-11)
तस्मिन्न्यस्ते मणौ वीर जिष्णुरुज्जीवितः प्रभुः। सुप्तोत्थित इवोत्तस्थौ मृष्टलोहितलोचनः ॥१४-८१-१२॥
tasmin-nyaste maṇau vīra jiṣṇur-ujjīvitaḥ prabhuḥ। suptotthita ivottasthau mṛṣṭa-lohita-locanaḥ ॥14-81-12॥
[तस्मिन्-न्यस्ते (tasmin-nyaste) - in that (when) placed; मणौ (maṇau) - on the jewel; वीर (vīra) - O hero; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; उज्जीवितः (ujjīvitaḥ) - revived; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; सुप्तोत्थितः (suptotthitaḥ) - having arisen from sleep; इव (iva) - as if; उत्तस्थौ (uttasthau) - he arose; मृष्ट-लोहित-लोचनः (mṛṣṭa-lohita-locanaḥ) - with cleansed (and) red eyes;]
(In that (when) placed on the jewel, O hero, the victorious lord, revived, as if having arisen from sleep, with cleansed red eyes, he arose.)
O hero, when the jewel was placed there, the victorious lord, revived, arose as if from sleep, his red eyes cleansed. (14-81-12)
तमुत्थितं महात्मानं लब्धसञ्ज्ञं मनस्विनम्। समीक्ष्य पितरं स्वस्थं ववन्दे बभ्रुवाहनः ॥१४-८१-१३॥
tam utthitaṃ mahātmānaṃ labdha-sañjñaṃ manasvinam. samīkṣya pitaraṃ svasthaṃ vavande babhruvāhanaḥ ॥14-81-13॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उत्थितम् (utthitam) - risen; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great-souled; लब्धसञ्ज्ञम् (labdha-sañjñam) - regained consciousness; मनस्विनम् (manasvinam) - strong-minded; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having seen; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; स्वस्थम् (svastham) - well; ववन्दे (vavande) - bowed; बभ्रुवाहनः (babhruvāhanaḥ) - Babhruvāhana;]
(Him risen, great-souled, regained consciousness, strong-minded, having seen father well, bowed Babhruvāhana.)
When Babhruvāhana saw his father, risen, of great soul, who had regained consciousness and was strong-minded and well, he bowed to him. (14-81-13)
उत्थिते पुरुषव्याघ्रे पुनर्लक्ष्मीवति प्रभो। दिव्याः सुमनसः पुण्या ववृषे पाकशासनः ॥१४-८१-१४॥
utthite puruṣavyāghre punarlakṣmīvati prabho। divyāḥ sumanasaḥ puṇyā vavṛṣe pākaśāsanaḥ ॥14-81-14॥
[उत्थिते (utthite) - having risen; पुरुषव्याघ्रे (puruṣavyāghre) - O tiger among men; पुनर्लक्ष्मीवति (punarlakṣmīvati) - again with fortune; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - flowers; पुण्या (puṇyā) - auspicious; ववृषे (vavṛṣe) - showered; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra (the lord of the asuras' destroyer);]
(Having risen, O tiger among men, again with fortune, O lord, divine auspicious flowers were showered by Indra.)
When you had arisen, O tiger among men, and fortune returned, O lord, Indra showered divine, auspicious flowers. (14-81-14)
अनाहता दुन्दुभयः प्रणेदुर्मेघनिस्वनाः। साधु साध्विति चाकाशे बभूव सुमहान्स्वनः ॥१४-८१-१५॥
anāhata dundubhayaḥ praṇedur megha-nisvanāḥ। sādhu sādhu iti ca ākāśe babhūva sumahān svanaḥ ॥14-81-15॥
[अनाहताः (anāhatāḥ) - unstruck; without being beaten; दुन्दुभयः (dundubhayaḥ) - drums; प्रणेदुः (praṇeduḥ) - resounded; made sound; मेघनिस्वनाः (megha-nisvanāḥ) - cloud-thunders; roars of clouds; साधु (sādhu) - well done; good; साधु (sādhu) - well done; good; इति (iti) - thus; so; च (ca) - and; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; बभूव (babhūva) - arose; became; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; enormous; स्वनः (svanaḥ) - sound;]
(Unstruck drums resounded, cloud-thunders (roars) (were heard). "Well done! Well done!" thus also in the sky arose a very great sound.)
Unbeaten drums resounded and thunderous roars echoed; also, a very great sound of "Well done! Well done!" arose in the sky. (14-81-15)
उत्थाय तु महाबाहुः पर्याश्वस्तो धनञ्जयः। बभ्रुवाहनमालिङ्ग्य समाजिघ्रत मूर्धनि ॥१४-८१-१६॥
utthāya tu mahābāhuḥ paryāśvasto dhanañjayaḥ। babhravāhanamāliṅgya samājighrata mūrdhani ॥14-81-16॥
[उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; (from) rising; तु (tu) - but; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the great-armed one; पर्याश्वस्तः (paryāśvastaḥ) - embraced all around; (one who) was embraced around; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); बभ्रुवाहनम् (babhravāhanam) - Babruvahana; आलिङ्ग्य (āliṅgya) - having embraced; समाजिघ्रत (samājighrata) - smelled (kissed); मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head;]
(Having risen but, the great-armed one, who was embraced all around, Dhananjaya, having embraced Babruvahana, smelled (kissed) on the head.)
But having arisen, the great-armed Dhananjaya, being embraced all around, embraced Babruvahana and kissed him on the head. (14-81-16)
ददर्श चाविदूरेऽस्य मातरं शोककर्शिताम्। उलूप्या सह तिष्ठन्तीं ततोऽपृच्छद्धनञ्जयः ॥१४-८१-१७॥
dadarśa cāvidūre'sya mātaraṃ śokakarśitām. ulūpyā saha tiṣṭhantīṃ tato'pṛcchaddhanañjayaḥ ॥14-81-17॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; च (ca) - and; अविदूरे (avidūre) - not far; अस्य (asya) - his; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; शोककर्शिताम् (śokakarśitām) - emaciated by grief; उलूप्या सह (ulūpyā saha) - together with Ulūpī; तिष्ठन्तीम् (tiṣṭhantīm) - standing; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - he inquired; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna);]
(He saw and not far his mother emaciated by grief, together with Ulūpī standing; then Dhanañjaya inquired.)
Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) saw, not far away, his mother, emaciated by grief, standing together with Ulūpī, and then he inquired. (14-81-17)
किमिदं लक्ष्यते सर्वं शोकविस्मयहर्षवत्। रणाजिरममित्रघ्न यदि जानासि शंस मे ॥१४-८१-१८॥
kim idaṃ lakṣyate sarvaṃ śoka-vismaya-harṣavat। raṇā-jiram amitra-ghna yadi jānāsi śaṃsa me ॥14-81-18॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is seen; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; शोकविस्मयहर्षवत् (śoka-vismaya-harṣavat) - having sorrow, astonishment, and joy; रणाजिरम् (raṇā-jiram) - battlefield; अमित्रघ्न (amitra-ghna) - destroyer of enemies; यदि (yadi) - if; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; शंस (śaṃsa) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(What is this all seen, having sorrow, astonishment, and joy? Battlefield, destroyer of enemies, if you know, tell to me.)
What is all this that is seen, appearing as though with sorrow, astonishment, and joy? O destroyer of enemies on the battlefield, if you know, tell me. (14-81-18)
जननी च किमर्थं ते रणभूमिमुपागता। नागेन्द्रदुहिता चेयमुलूपी किमिहागता ॥१४-८१-१९॥
jananī ca kimarthaṁ te raṇabhūmim-upāgatā। nāgendraduhitā ca iyam ulūpī kim iha āgatā ॥14-81-19॥
[जननी (jananī) - mother; च (ca) - and; किमर्थं (kimartham) - for what purpose; ते (te) - your; रणभूमिमुपागता (raṇabhūmim-upāgatā) - (she) has come to the battlefield; नागेन्द्रदुहिता (nāgendraduhitā) - the daughter of the lord of serpents; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this; उलूपी (ulūpī) - Ulūpī; किमिहागता (kim iha āgatā) - for what (reason) has come here;]
(Mother and for what purpose your (mother) has come to the battlefield? The daughter of the lord of serpents and this Ulūpī, for what (reason) has she come here? (14-81-19))
And why has your mother come to the battlefield? And this Ulūpī, the daughter of the lord of serpents, why has she come here? (14-81-19)
जानाम्यहमिदं युद्धं त्वया मद्वचनात्कृतम्। स्त्रीणामागमने हेतुमहमिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१४-८१-२०॥
jānāmy aham idaṃ yuddhaṃ tvayā mad-vacanāt kṛtam। strīṇām āgamane hetum aham icchāmi veditum॥14-81-20॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अहम् (aham) - I; इदं (idaṃ) - this; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मद्वचनात् (mad-vacanāt) - by my word; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; आगमने (āgamane) - in the coming; हेतुम् (hetum) - reason; अहम् (aham) - I; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - desire; वेดิตुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(I know I this battle by you by my word done. Of women in the coming reason I desire to know.)
I know that this battle was done by you at my word. I desire to know the reason for the coming of the women. (14-81-20)
तमुवाच ततः पृष्टो मणिपूरपतिस्तदा। प्रसाद्य शिरसा विद्वानुलूपी पृच्छ्यतामिति ॥१४-८१-२१॥
tam-uvāca tataḥ pṛṣṭaḥ maṇipūrapatis-tadā। prasādya śirasā vidvān ulūpī pṛcchyatām-iti ॥14-81-21॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - he spoke; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - being asked; मणिपूरपतिः (maṇipūrapatiḥ) - the lord of Maṇipura; तदा (tadā) - at that time; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having pleased; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise one; उलूपी (ulūpī) - Ulūpī; पृच्छ्यताम् (pṛcchyatām) - may be questioned; इति (iti) - thus;]
(To him he spoke, then, being asked, the lord of Maṇipura at that time, having pleased (with his) head, the wise one, Ulūpī, may be questioned, thus.)
Then, being questioned, the lord of Maṇipura spoke to him at that time, having bowed his head in deference, and said, "Let the wise Ulūpī be questioned thus." (14-81-21)
