एकलव्यसुतपराजयः
The defeat of Ekalavya's son.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
मागधेनार्चितो राजन्पाण्डवः श्वेतवाहनः। दक्षिणां दिशमास्थाय चारयामास तं हयम् ॥१४-८४-१॥
O king, honored by the king of Magadha, the Pandava Śvetavāhana (Arjuna) set forth in the southern direction and made that horse wander. (14-84-1)
ततः स पुनरावृत्य हयः कामचरो बली। आससाद पुरीं रम्यां चेदीनां शुक्तिसाह्वयाम् ॥१४-८४-२॥
Then, having turned back, the powerful horse that wandered as it pleased reached the beautiful city of the Cedis, called Śuktisāhvayā. (14-84-2)
शरभेणार्चितस्तत्र शिशुपालात्मजेन सः। युद्धपूर्वेण मानेन पूजया च महाबलः ॥१४-८४-३॥
There, the very powerful one was honored by Śarabha and by the son of Śiśupāla, with honor and reverence before the battle. (14-84-3)
तत्रार्चितो ययौ राजंस्तदा स तुरगोत्तमः। काशीनन्ध्रान्कोसलांश्च किरातानथ तङ्गणान् ॥१४-८४-४॥
O king, then, there, that excellent horse, after being worshipped, went to the Kāśis, Andhras, Kosalas, Kirātas, and Taṅgaṇas. (14-84-4)
तत्र पूजां यथान्यायं प्रतिगृह्य स पाण्डवः। पुनरावृत्य कौन्तेयो दशार्णानगमत्तदा ॥१४-८४-५॥
There, having duly accepted the honor, the Pāṇḍava, Kaunteya, then returned to the Daśārṇas. (14-84-5)
तत्र चित्राङ्गदो नाम बलवान्वसुधाधिपः। तेन युद्धमभूत्तस्य विजयस्यातिभैरवम् ॥१४-८४-६॥
There was a powerful lord of the earth named Citrāṅgada. He fought a most terrible battle for victory. (14-84-6)
तं चापि वशमानीय किरीटी पुरुषर्षभः। निषादराज्ञो विषयमेकलव्यस्य जग्मिवान् ॥१४-८४-७॥
And having brought him under control, Arjuna, the diademed bull among men, went to the territory of King Ekalavya of the Niṣādas. (14-84-7)
एकलव्यसुतश्चैनं युद्धेन जगृहे तदा। ततश्चक्रे निषादैः स सङ्ग्रामं रोमहर्षणम् ॥१४-८४-८॥
Then, the son of Ekalavya seized him in battle; thereupon, with the Nishadas, he made a hair-raising battle. (14-84-8)
ततस्तमपि कौन्तेयः समरेष्वपराजितः। जिगाय समरे वीरो यज्ञविघ्नार्थमुद्यतम् ॥१४-८४-९॥
Then the unconquered son of Kunti also defeated in battle the hero who had risen for the purpose of disturbing the sacrifice. (14-84-9)
स तं जित्वा महाराज नैषादिं पाकशासनिः। अर्चितः प्रययौ भूयो दक्षिणं सलिलार्णवम् ॥१४-८४-१०॥
O great king, having conquered the Naiṣāda, Indra, the subduer of Pāka, was honored and then proceeded again towards the southern ocean. (14-84-10)
तत्रापि द्रविडैरन्ध्रै रौद्रैर्माहिषकैरपि। तथा कोल्लगिरेयैश्च युद्धमासीत्किरीटिनः ॥१४-८४-११॥
There also, indeed, the Dravidians, the Andhras, the Raudras, the Māhiṣakas, and likewise the Kollagiriya people fought a battle with the one wearing the diadem. (14-84-11)
तुरगस्य वशेनाथ सुराष्ट्रानभितो ययौ। गोकर्णमपि चासाद्य प्रभासमपि जग्मिवान् ॥१४-८४-१२॥
Then, under the control of the horse, he went throughout the region of Surashtra; after reaching Gokarna and also Prabhasa, he proceeded further. (14-84-12)
ततो द्वारवतीं रम्यां वृष्णिवीराभिरक्षिताम्। आससाद हयः श्रीमान्कुरुराजस्य यज्ञियः ॥१४-८४-१३॥
Then the illustrious sacrificial horse of the king of Kuru reached the beautiful Dvaravati, which was protected by the heroes of the Vṛṣṇi clan. (14-84-13)
तमुन्मथ्य हयश्रेष्ठं यादवानां कुमारकाः। प्रययुस्तांस्तदा राजन्नुग्रसेनो न्यवारयत् ॥१४-८४-१४॥
Having destroyed the best horse, the youths of the Yādavas went forth; then, O king, Ugrasena restrained them. (14-84-14)
ततः पुर्या विनिष्क्रम्य वृष्ण्यन्धकपतिस्तदा। सहितो वसुदेवेन मातुलेन किरीटिनः ॥१४-८४-१५॥
Then, having left the city, the lord of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, together with Vasudeva and the maternal uncle of the crown-wearers, proceeded. (14-84-15)
तौ समेत्य कुरुश्रेष्ठं विधिवत्प्रीतिपूर्वकम्। परया भरतश्रेष्ठं पूजया समवस्थितौ ॥ ततस्ताभ्यामनुज्ञातो ययौ येन हयो गतः ॥१४-८४-१६॥
Those two, having approached the foremost of the Kurus according to tradition and with affection, stood by the foremost of the Bharatas with utmost honor. Then, having received permission from those two, he went where the horse had gone. (14-84-16)
ततः स पश्चिमं देशं समुद्रस्य तदा हयः। क्रमेण व्यचरत्स्फीतं ततः पञ्चनदं ययौ ॥१४-८४-१७॥
Then, at that time, the horse went through the abundant western region of the ocean step by step; then he reached the land of five rivers (Punjab). (14-84-17)
तस्मादपि स कौरव्य गान्धारविषयं हयः। विचचार यथाकामं कौन्तेयानुगतस्तदा ॥१४-८४-१८॥
Then, O descendant of Kuru, the horse also wandered as it pleased through the region of Gandhara, followed at that time by the sons of Kunti. (14-84-18)
तत्र गान्धारराजेन युद्धमासीन्महात्मनः। घोरं शकुनिपुत्रेण पूर्ववैरानुसारिणा ॥१४-८४-१९॥
There, a battle occurred between the king of Gandhara and the great-souled one; a terrible battle with the son of Shakuni, following former enmity. (14-84-19)
