यज्ञसमृद्धिः
The prosperity of the sacrifice;
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
तस्मिन्यज्ञे प्रवृत्ते तु वाग्मिनो हेतुवादिनः। हेतुवादान्बहून्प्राहुः परस्परजिगीषवः ॥१४-८७-१॥
But when that sacrifice commenced, the eloquent disputants engaged in many logical arguments, each desiring to defeat the others. (14-87-1)
ददृशुस्तं नृपतयो यज्ञस्य विधिमुत्तमम्। देवेन्द्रस्येव विहितं भीमेन कुरुनन्दन ॥१४-८७-२॥
O joy of the Kurus, the kings saw the excellent procedure of the sacrifice, performed by Bhīma, just as (it was done) for Indra. (14-87-2)
ददृशुस्तोरणान्यत्र शातकुम्भमयानि ते। शय्यासनविहारांश्च सुबहून्रत्नभूषितान् ॥१४-८७-३॥
They saw gateways here made of gold, and also many beds, seats, and resting places adorned with gems. (14-87-3)
घटान्पात्रीः कटाहानि कलशान्वर्धमानकान्। न हि किञ्चिदसौवर्णमपश्यंस्तत्र पार्थिवाः ॥१४-८७-४॥
He saw pots, bowls, large dishes, pitchers, and measuring vessels—but, O kings, he did not see anything made of gold there. (14-87-4)
यूपांश्च शास्त्रपठितान्दारवान्हेमभूषितान्। उपकॢप्तान्यथाकालं विधिवद्भूरिवर्चसः ॥१४-८७-५॥
He had sacrificial posts of great splendor made of wood and adorned with gold, prepared according to the time and as prescribed by the scriptures. (14-87-5)
स्थलजा जलजा ये च पशवः केचन प्रभो। सर्वानेव समानीतांस्तानपश्यन्त ते नृपाः ॥१४-८७-६॥
O lord, the kings saw all those animals—whether born on land or in water, and any others—that had been assembled together. (14-87-6)
गाश्चैव महिषीश्चैव तथा वृद्धाः स्त्रियोऽपि च। औदकानि च सत्त्वानि श्वापदानि वयांसि च ॥१४-८७-७॥
Cows and buffaloes, as well as old people, women, water-dwelling beings, other living creatures, beasts of prey, and birds. (14-87-7)
जरायुजान्यण्डजानि स्वेदजान्युद्भिदानि च। पर्वतानूपवन्यानि भूतानि ददृशुश्च ते ॥१४-८७-८॥
They saw beings born from placenta, egg, sweat, and sprouting, and beings dwelling on mountains, in wetlands, and in forests. (14-87-8)
एवं प्रमुदितं सर्वं पशुगोधनधान्यतः। यज्ञवाटं नृपा दृष्ट्वा परं विस्मयमागमन् ॥ ब्राह्मणानां विशां चैव बहुमृष्टान्नमृद्धिमत् ॥१४-८७-९॥
Thus, everything was joyful with abundance of animals, cattle, and grain. The kings, seeing the sacrificial enclosure, were greatly astonished at the plentiful, sumptuous food of the Brāhmaṇas and the people. (14-87-9)
पूर्णे शतसहस्रे तु विप्राणां तत्र भुञ्जताम्। दुन्दुभिर्मेघनिर्घोषो मुहुर्मुहुरताड्यत ॥१४-८७-१०॥
When one hundred thousand Brāhmaṇas were eating there, the kettledrum, sounding like thunder, was beaten again and again. (14-87-10)
विननादासकृत्सोऽथ दिवसे दिवसे तदा। एवं स ववृते यज्ञो धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥१४-८७-११॥
At that time, day by day, with loud noise, the sacrifice of the wise Dharmarāja was thus conducted. (14-87-11)
अन्नस्य बहवो राजन्नुत्सर्गाः पर्वतोपमाः। दधिकुल्याश्च ददृशुः सर्पिषश्च ह्रदाञ्जनाः ॥१४-८७-१२॥
O king, there were many heaps of food resembling mountains; streams of curd and shining lakes of ghee were seen. (14-87-12)
जम्बूद्वीपो हि सकलो नानाजनपदायुतः। राजन्नदृश्यतैकस्थो राज्ञस्तस्मिन्महाक्रतौ ॥१४-८७-१३॥
O king, the entire Jambūdvīpa, filled with many peoples and countries, was indeed seen united in one place at that great sacrifice of the king. (14-87-13)
तत्र जातिसहस्राणि पुरुषाणां ततस्ततः। गृहीत्वा धनमाजग्मुर्बहूनि भरतर्षभ ॥१४-८७-१४॥
O bull of the Bharatas, there, many thousands of classes of men from all sides came here, having taken wealth. (14-87-14)
राजानः स्रग्विणश्चापि सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः। पर्यवेषन्द्विजाग्र्यांस्ताञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१४-८७-१५॥
Kings, adorned with garlands and polished jewel-earrings, attended those eminent Brāhmaṇas in their hundreds and thousands. (14-87-15)
विविधान्यन्नपानानि पुरुषा येऽनुयायिनः। तेषां नृपोपभोज्यानि ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददुः स्म ते ॥१४-८७-१६॥
They gave to the Brāhmaṇas the various foods and drinks, fit to be enjoyed by kings, which belonged to those men who were their attendants. (14-87-16)
