ततः सञ्ज्ञाप्य तुरगं विधिवद्याजकर्षभाः। उपसंवेशयन्राजंस्ततस्तां द्रुपदात्मजाम् ॥ कलाभिस्तिसृभी राजन्यथाविधि मनस्विनीम् ॥१४-९१-२॥

O bull among the Bharatas, the foremost of twice-born, unagitated, having taken out his fat, caused it to be cooked according to scripture, exactly as prescribed. (14-91-3)
तं वपाधूमगन्धं तु धर्मराजः सहानुजः। उपाजिघ्रद्यथान्यायं सर्वपाप्मापहं तदा ॥१४-९१-४॥
taṃ vapādhūmagandhaṃ tu dharmarājaḥ sahānujāḥ। upājighradyathānyāyaṃ sarvapāpmāpahaṃ tadā ॥14-91-4॥
[तं (taṃ) - that; वपाधूमगन्धं (vapādhūmagandham) - having the smell of sacrificial flesh smoke; तु (tu) - but; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); सहानुजः (sahānujāḥ) - together with younger brothers; उपाजिघ्रत् (upājighrat) - approached and smelled; यथान्यायं (yathānyāyam) - as is proper; सर्वपाप्मापहं (sarvapāpmāpaham) - remover of all sin; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(That, with the odor of sacrificial flesh smoke, but Dharmarāja together with (his) younger brothers, approached and smelled, as is proper, remover of all sin, then.)
Then Dharmarāja, together with his younger brothers, properly approached and smelled that which had the smell of sacrificial flesh smoke, a remover of all sin. (14-91-4)
शिष्टान्यङ्गानि यान्यासंस्तस्याश्वस्य नराधिप। तान्यग्नौ जुहुवुर्धीराः समस्ताः षोडशर्त्विजः ॥१४-९१-५॥
śiṣṭāny aṅgāni yāni āsaṁs tasya aśvasya narādhipa। tāni agnau juhuvur dhīrāḥ samastāḥ ṣoḍaśa ṛtvijaḥ॥14-91-5॥

(O king, the wise sixteen priests, having gathered the remaining parts of that horse, offered all those into the fire.)

(Having established thus that sacrifice of the king, endowed with Indra's splendor, Vyāsa, with his disciple, the venerable one, caused that king to prosper.)
Having in this way established that sacrifice of that king, resplendent with Indra's energy, Vyāsa, together with his disciple, the venerable sage, caused that king to prosper. (14-91-6)
ततो युधिष्ठिरः प्रादात्सदस्येभ्यो यथाविधि। कोटीसहस्रं निष्काणां व्यासाय तु वसुन्धराम् ॥१४-९१-७॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prādātsadasyebhyo yathāvidhi. koṭīsahasraṃ niṣkāṇāṃ vyāsāya tu vasundharām ॥14-91-7॥

(Then Yudhiṣṭhira gave to the members of the assembly according to formal procedure. A crore of thousands of niṣkas he gave to Vyāsa, but the earth (land).)
Then Yudhiṣṭhira bestowed gifts to the members of the assembly as prescribed; to Vyāsa, he gave land and a crore of thousands of gold ornaments. (14-91-7)
प्रतिगृह्य धरां राजन्व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः। अब्रवीद्भरतश्रेष्ठं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१४-९१-८॥
pratigṛhya dharāṁ rājan vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ। abravīdbhara taśreṣṭhaṁ dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram॥14-91-8॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; accepted; धरां (dharām) - the earth; land; राजन् (rājan) - O king; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; सत्यवतीसुतः (satyavatīsutaḥ) - the son of Satyavatī; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; भरतश्रेष्ठं (bharataśreṣṭham) - to the best (chief) of the Bharatas; धर्मात्मानं (dharmātmānam) - the righteous-souled; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Having received the earth, O king, Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, said to the best of the Bharatas, the righteous-souled Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O king, having received the earth, Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira, the chief of the Bharatas and righteous in soul. (14-91-8)
पृथिवी भवतस्त्वेषा संन्यस्ता राजसत्तम। निष्क्रयो दीयतां मह्यं ब्राह्मणा हि धनार्थिनः ॥१४-९१-९॥
pṛthivī bhavatastveṣā saṃnyastā rājasattama। niṣkrayo dīyatāṃ mahyaṃ brāhmaṇā hi dhanārthinaḥ ॥14-91-9॥
[पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; भवतस् (bhavatas) - from you; तु (tu) - but; एषा (eṣā) - this; संन्यस्ता (saṃnyastā) - deposited; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; निष्क्रयः (niṣkrayaḥ) - price; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let be given; महि (mahyaṃ) - to me; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; हि (hi) - indeed; धनार्थिनः (dhanārthinaḥ) - desiring wealth;]
(Earth from you but this deposited O best of kings. Price let be given to me, brāhmaṇas indeed desiring wealth.)
O best of kings, this earth has been deposited by you. Let the price be given to me, for the brāhmaṇas are indeed desiring wealth. (14-91-9)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु तान्विप्रान्प्रत्युवाच महामनाः। भ्रातृभिः सहितो धीमान्मध्ये राज्ञां महात्मनाम् ॥१४-९१-१०॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tu tān viprān pratyuvāca mahāmanāḥ। bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito dhīmān madhye rājñāṃ mahātmanām ॥14-91-10॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - those; विप्रान् (viprān) - Brāhmaṇas; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; said to; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; मध्येमध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - great-souled;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira but those Brāhmaṇas replied great-minded; with brothers accompanied wise; in the midst of kings great-souled.)
But the great-minded Yudhiṣṭhira, accompanied by his wise brothers, replied to those Brāhmaṇas in the midst of the noble-souled kings. (14-91-10)
अश्वमेधे महायज्ञे पृथिवी दक्षिणा स्मृता। अर्जुनेन जिता सेयमृत्विग्भ्यः प्रापिता मया ॥१४-९१-११॥
aśvamedhe mahāyajñe pṛthivī dakṣiṇā smṛtā। arjunena jitā seyam ṛtvigbhyaḥ prāpitā mayā॥14-91-11॥
[अश्वमेधे (aśvamedhe) - in the horse-sacrifice;, महायज्ञे (mahāyajñe) - in the great sacrifice;, पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth;, दक्षिणा (dakṣiṇā) - offering;, स्मृता (smṛtā) - is considered;, अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna;, जिता (jitā) - conquered;, सा (sā) - she;, इयम् (iyam) - this;, ऋत्विग्भ्यः (ṛtvigbhyaḥ) - to the priests;, प्रापिता (prāpitā) - has been offered;, मया (mayā) - by me;]
(In the horse-sacrifice, in the great sacrifice, earth is considered the offering. By Arjuna conquered, this very she has been offered to the priests by me. (14-91-11))
In the great horse-sacrifice, the earth itself is regarded as the offering. Conquered by Arjuna, this earth has been presented to the priests by me. (14-91-11)
वनं प्रवेक्ष्ये विप्रेन्द्रा विभजध्वं महीमिमाम्। चतुर्धा पृथिवीं कृत्वा चातुर्होत्रप्रमाणतः ॥१४-९१-१२॥
vanaṃ pravekṣye viprendrā vibhajadhvaṃ mahīm imām। caturdhā pṛthivīṃ kṛtvā cāturhotrapramāṇataḥ ॥14-91-12॥
[वनम् (vanam) - forest; प्रवेक्ष्ये (pravekṣye) - I shall enter; विप्रेन्द्राः (viprendrāḥ) - O chiefs of Brāhmaṇas; विभजध्वम् (vibhajadhvam) - divide (you all); महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; चतुर्धा (caturdhā) - into four parts; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - after making; चातुर्होत्रप्रमाणतः (cāturhotra-pramāṇataḥ) - according to the (rite of the) four priests;]
(Forest I shall enter; O chiefs of Brāhmaṇas, divide this earth. Into four parts the earth after making, according to the measure of the four priests.)

नाहमादातुमिच्छामि ब्रह्मस्वं मुनिसत्तमाः। इदं हि मे मतं नित्यं भ्रातॄणां च ममानघाः ॥१४-९१-१३॥
nāham ādātum icchāmi brahmasvaṃ munisattamāḥ। idaṃ hi me mataṃ nityaṃ bhrātṝṇāṃ ca mamānaghāḥ॥14-91-13॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take; to accept; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - wish; desire; ब्रह्मस्वम् (brahmasvam) - property of a brāhmaṇa; brahmin's wealth; मुनिसत्तमाः (munisattamāḥ) - O best of sages; इदम् (idam) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; मे (me) - to me; my; मतम् (matam) - opinion; decision; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; forever; भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātṝṇām) - of the brothers; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; of me; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - O sinless ones;]
(Not I to take wish brahmin's property O best of sages. This indeed my opinion always of the brothers and my O sinless ones (14-91-13))
O best of sages, I do not wish to accept the property of a brāhmaṇa. This indeed is always my decision, and that of my brothers as well, O sinless ones. (14-91-13)
इत्युक्तवति तस्मिंस्ते भ्रातरो द्रौपदी च सा। एवमेतदिति प्राहुस्तदभूद्रोमहर्षणम् ॥१४-९१-१४॥
ity uktavati tasmiṁs te bhrātaro draupadī ca sā। evam etad iti prāhus tad abhūd romaharṣaṇam ॥14-91-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवति (uktavati) - having spoken; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when he; ते (te) - they; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; एवम् (evam) - so; एतत् (etat) - this; इति (iti) - thus; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - said; तत् (tat) - that; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; रोमहर्षणम् (romaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising;]
(Thus, when he had spoken, they—the brothers and Draupadī, she also—said: "So it is, thus"; that became hair-raising.)

tato'ntarikṣe vāg āsīt sādhu sādhv iti bhārata. tathaiva dvija-saṅghānāṃ śaṃsatāṃ vibabhau svanaḥ ॥14-91-15॥

(Then in the sky, a voice was, 'well done! well done!' thus, O Bhārata. Likewise, of the groups of twice-born, of those praising, resounded sound.)
Then, O Bhārata, a voice in the sky exclaimed, 'well done! well done!' Likewise, the sound of those groups of twice-born praising resounded. (14-91-15)
द्वैपायनस्तथोक्तस्तु पुनरेव युधिष्ठिरम्। उवाच मध्ये विप्राणामिदं सम्पूजयन्मुनिः ॥१४-९१-१६॥
dvaipāyanas tathoktas tu punar eva yudhiṣṭhiram। uvāca madhye viprāṇām idaṃ sampūjayan muniḥ॥14-91-16॥
[द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - Vyāsa; son of an island-dweller; तथा (tathā) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; विप्राणाम् (viprāṇām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सम्पूजयन् (sampūjayan) - honoring; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage;]
(Vyāsa, thus having been addressed, but again indeed to Yudhiṣṭhira, spoke, in the midst of the Brāhmaṇas, this, honoring, sage.)
Vyāsa, after having been addressed in this manner, once again, honoring Yudhiṣṭhira in the midst of the Brāhmaṇas, the sage spoke as follows. (14-91-16)
दत्तैषा भवता मह्यं तां ते प्रतिददाम्यहम्। हिरण्यं दीयतामेभ्यो द्विजातिभ्यो धरास्तु ते ॥१४-९१-१७॥
datta eṣā bhavatā mahyam tāṃ te pratidadāmy aham। hiraṇyaṃ dīyatām ebhyo dvijātibhyo dharāstu te ॥14-91-17॥

(Given this by you to me, her to you I return. Gold let it be given to these twice-born; the earth let it be yours. (14-91-17))
This whom you gave to me, I return her to you. Let gold be given to these twice-born; as for the earth, let it be yours. (14-91-17)

(Then Vāsudeva spoke to the dharmic king Yudhiṣṭhira: "As the venerable Vyāsa has said, so you ought to do that." (14-91-18))
Then Vāsudeva said to King Yudhiṣṭhira, "You should do exactly as the venerable Vyāsa has directed." (14-91-18)
इत्युक्तः स कुरुश्रेष्ठः प्रीतात्मा भ्रातृभिः सह। कोटिकोटिकृतां प्रादाद्दक्षिणां त्रिगुणां क्रतोः ॥१४-९१-१९॥

[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; कुरुश्रेष्ठः (kuruśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of the Kurus; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with delighted mind; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; कोटिकोटिकृतां (koṭikoṭikṛtām) - made multiplied by crores and crores; प्रादात् (prādāt) - he gave; दक्षिणां (dakṣiṇām) - offering/gift (to priests); त्रिगुणां (triguṇām) - three times as much; क्रतोः (kratoḥ) - of the sacrifice;]
(Thus having been addressed, he, the best of the Kurus with delighted mind, together with his brothers, gave as an offering, made multiplied by crores and crores, a gift thrice as much for the sacrifice.)
Thus addressed, he—the best of the Kurus, with a joyful heart, together with his brothers—gave as a sacrificial offering a gift, multiplied by crores upon crores, three times greater for the sacrifice. (14-91-19)
न करिष्यति तल्लोके कश्चिदन्यो नराधिपः। यत्कृतं कुरुसिंहेन मरुत्तस्यानुकुर्वता ॥१४-९१-२०॥
na kariṣyati talloke kaścidanyo narādhipaḥ। yatkṛtaṃ kurusiṃhena maruttasyānukurvatā ॥14-91-20॥
[न (na) - not; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; तल्लोके (talloke) - in that world; कश्चिद् (kaścid) - any; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; यत् (yat) - what; कृतं (kṛtam) - was done; कुरुसिंहेन (kurusiṃhena) - by the lion of the Kurus; मरुत्तस्य (maruttasya) - of Marutta; अनुकुर्वता (anukurvatā) - imitating;]
(Not will do in that world any other king what was done by the lion of the Kurus imitating Marutta.)
In that world, no other king will accomplish what the lion of the Kurus did in emulating Marutta. (14-91-20)
प्रतिगृह्य तु तद्द्रव्यं कृष्णद्वैपायनः प्रभुः। ऋत्विग्भ्यः प्रददौ विद्वांश्चतुर्धा व्यभजंश्च ते ॥१४-९१-२१॥
pratigṛhya tu taddravyaṃ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ। ṛtvigbhyaḥ pradadau vidvāṃścaturdhā vyabhajaṃśca te॥14-91-21॥

(Having accepted but that wealth, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, the master, to the priests gave; the learned one in four parts divided and they.)
But having accepted that wealth, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, the master, gave it to the priests; the learned one divided it into four parts, and they (the priests) received it. (14-91-21)
पृथिव्या निष्क्रयं दत्त्वा तद्धिरण्यं युधिष्ठिरः। धूतपाप्मा जितस्वर्गो मुमुदे भ्रातृभिः सह ॥१४-९१-२२॥
pṛthivyā niṣkrayaṃ dattvā tad dhiraṇyaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dhūtapāpmā jitasvargo mumude bhrātṛbhiḥ saha॥14-91-22॥

(Having given the price for the earth, that gold, Yudhiṣṭhira, whose sin was cleansed, who had conquered heaven, rejoiced together with his brothers.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, after giving gold as the price for the earth, his sins cleansed and having attained heaven, rejoiced along with his brothers. (14-91-22)
ऋत्विजस्तमपर्यन्तं सुवर्णनिचयं तदा। व्यभजन्त द्विजातिभ्यो यथोत्साहं यथाबलम् ॥१४-९१-२३॥
ṛtvijastamaparyantaṃ suvarṇanicayaṃ tadā। vyabhajanta dvijātibhyo yathotsāhaṃ yathābalam ॥14-91-23॥

(Sacrificial priests that heap of gold then unto the end distributed to the twice-born, according to enthusiasm, according to strength.)
The sacrificial priests distributed that entire heap of gold to the twice-born according to each one's enthusiasm and capacity. (14-91-23)
यज्ञवाटे तु यत्किञ्चिद्धिरण्यमपि भूषणम्। तोरणानि च यूपांश्च घटाः पात्रीस्तथेष्टकाः ॥ युधिष्ठिराभ्यनुज्ञाताः सर्वं तद्व्यभजन्द्विजाः ॥१४-९१-२४॥
yajñavāṭe tu yatkiñciddhiraṇyam api bhūṣaṇam। toraṇāni ca yūpāṁś ca ghaṭāḥ pātrīs tatheṣṭakāḥ ॥ yudhiṣṭhirābhyanujñātāḥ sarvaṁ tadvyabhajandvijāḥ ॥14-91-24॥
[यज्ञवाटे (yajñavāṭe) - in the sacrificial enclosure; तु (tu) - but; यत्किञ्चित् (yatkiñcit) - whatever (there was); धिरण्यम् (dhiraṇyam) - gold; अपि (api) - also; भूषणम् (bhūṣaṇam) - ornament; तोरणानि (toraṇāni) - gateways; च (ca) - and; यूपान् (yūpān) - sacrificial posts; च (ca) - and; घटाः (ghaṭāḥ) - pots; पात्रीः (pātrīḥ) - vessels; तथा (tathā) - as well as; इष्टकाः (iṣṭakāḥ) - bricks; युधिष्ठिर-अभ्यनुज्ञाताः (yudhiṣṭhira-abhyanujñātāḥ) - by Yudhiṣṭhira having been permitted; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; व्यभजन् (vyabhajan) - they divided; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - the twice-born;]
(In the sacrificial enclosure but whatever gold also ornament, gateways and sacrificial posts and pots, vessels as well as bricks; by Yudhiṣṭhira having been permitted, all that the twice-born they divided.)
But in the sacrificial enclosure, whatever gold, ornaments, gateways, sacrificial posts, pots, vessels, and bricks were there—all that, with Yudhiṣṭhira's permission, the twice-born (Brahmins) divided among themselves. (14-91-24)
अनन्तरं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः क्षत्रिया जह्रिरे वसु। तथा विट्शूद्रसङ्घाश्च तथान्ये म्लेच्छजातयः ॥ कालेन महता जह्रुस्तत्सुवर्णं ततस्ततः ॥१४-९१-२५॥
anantaraṃ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ kṣatriyā jahrire vasu। tathā viṭ-śūdra-saṅghāś ca tathānye mleccha-jātayaḥ ॥ kālena mahatā jahrus tat-suvarṇaṃ tataḥ tataḥ ॥14-91-25॥
[अनन्तरं (anantaram) - afterwards; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - from the Brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - the Kṣatriyas; जह्रिरे (jahrire) - took away; वसु (vasu) - wealth; तथा (tathā) - likewise; विट्-शूद्र-सङ्घाः (viṭ-śūdra-saṅghāḥ) - groups of Vaiśyas and Śūdras; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - similarly; अन्ये (anye) - other; म्लेच्छ-जातयः (mleccha-jātayaḥ) - foreign lineages; कालेन (kālena) - by time; महता (mahatā) - great; जह्रुः (jahruḥ) - took away; तत्-सुवर्णम् (tat-suvarṇam) - that gold; ततः ततः (tataḥ tataḥ) - from time to time;]
(Afterwards, from the Brāhmaṇas, the Kṣatriyas took away the wealth. Likewise, groups of Vaiśyas and Śūdras and similarly other foreign lineages, by great lapses of time, took away that gold, from time to time.)
Thereafter, the Kṣatriyas seized the wealth from the Brāhmaṇas; afterwards, the Vaiśyas and Śūdras and other foreign races likewise took that gold, again and again, over long periods of time. (14-91-25)
ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे मुदिता जग्मुरालयान्। तर्पिता वसुना तेन धर्मराज्ञा महात्मना ॥१४-९१-२६॥
tatas te brāhmaṇāḥ sarve muditā jagmur ālayān। tarpitā vasunā tena dharmarājñā mahātmanā ॥14-91-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; ते (te) - they; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - joyful; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; आलयान् (ālayān) - to their homes; तर्पिताः (tarpitāḥ) - satisfied; वसुना (vasunā) - with wealth; तेन (tena) - by him; धर्मराज्ञा (dharmarājñā) - by the king of dharma; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;]
(Thereafter, they, the brāhmaṇas, all joyful, went to their homes, satisfied with wealth by him, by the king of dharma, by the great-souled one.)
Thereafter, all the brāhmaṇas, filled with joy and satisfied by the wealth given by the great-souled king of dharma, went to their homes. (14-91-26)
स्वमंशं भगवान्व्यासः कुन्त्यै पादाभिवादनात्। प्रददौ तस्य महतो हिरण्यस्य महाद्युतिः ॥१४-९१-२७॥
svamaṃśaṃ bhagavān vyāsaḥ kuntyai pādābhivādanāt। pradadau tasya mahato hiraṇyasya mahādyutiḥ॥14-91-27॥
[स्वम् अंशम् (svam aṃśam) - his own part; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; कुन्त्यै (kuntyai) - to Kuntī; पादाभिवादनात् (pādābhivādanāt) - from the salutation at the feet; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; तस्य (tasya) - of her; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; हिरण्यस्य (hiraṇyasya) - of gold; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - the highly radiant;]
(His own part, the venerable Vyāsa, to Kuntī, from the salutation at the feet, gave of her the great gold, the highly radiant.)
The venerable Vyāsa, of great radiance, gave his own share of that great gold to Kuntī because she had saluted his feet. (14-91-27)
श्वशुरात्प्रीतिदायं तं प्राप्य सा प्रीतमानसा। चकार पुण्यं लोके तु सुमहान्तं पृथा तदा ॥१४-९१-२८॥
śvaśurāt prītidāyaṃ taṃ prāpya sā prītamānasā। cakāra puṇyaṃ loke tu sumahāntaṃ pṛthā tadā॥14-91-28॥
[श्वशुरात् (śvaśurāt) - from (her) father-in-law; प्रीतिदायम् (prītidāyam) - giver of delight; bestower of affection; तम् (tam) - him; प्राप्य (prāpya) - obtaining; सा (sā) - she; प्रीतमानसा (prītamānasā) - with a delighted mind; चकार (cakāra) - performed; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - a meritorious act; virtue; लोके (loke) - in the world; तु (tu) - but; indeed; सुमहान्तम् (sumahāntam) - very great; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā (Kuntī); तदा (tadā) - then;]
(From (her) father-in-law, the giver of delight, him obtaining, she with delighted mind performed a meritorious act in the world indeed very great Pṛthā then.)
Then Pṛthā, having obtained from her father-in-law the giver of delight, with a joyful heart, performed a very great virtuous act in the world. (14-91-28)
गत्वा त्ववभृथं राजा विपाप्मा भ्रातृभिः सह। सभाज्यमानः शुशुभे महेन्द्रो दैवतैरिव ॥१४-९१-२९॥
gatvā tvavabhṛthaṃ rājā vipāpmā bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। sabhājyamānaḥ śuśubhe mahendro daivatairiva ॥14-91-29॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; त्व् (tv) - but; अवभृथम् (avabhṛtham) - to the Avabṛtha (final bath of a sacrifice); राजा (rājā) - the king; विपाप्मा (vipāpmā) - sinless; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (his) brothers; सह (saha) - together; सभाज्यमानः (sabhājyamānaḥ) - being honored; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - (like) Mahendra (great Indra, King of gods); दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the deities; इव (iva) - like;]
(Having gone but to the Avabṛtha, the king, sinless, with brothers together, being honored, shone like Mahendra by the deities.)
But having gone to the Avabṛtha bath, the sinless king, together with his brothers, being honored, shone like Mahendra among the gods. (14-91-29)
पाण्डवाश्च महीपालैः समेतैः संवृतास्तदा। अशोभन्त महाराज ग्रहास्तारागणैरिव ॥१४-९१-३०॥
pāṇḍavāś ca mahīpālaiḥ sametaiḥ saṁvṛtās tadā। aśobhanta mahārāja grahās tārāgaṇair iva ॥14-91-30॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; महीपालैः (mahīpālaiḥ) - with kings; समेतैः (sametaiḥ) - assembled (with); संवृताः (saṁvṛtāḥ) - surrounded; तदा (tadā) - then; अशोभन्त (aśobhanta) - shone; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - planets; तारागणैः (tārāgaṇaiḥ) - by groups of stars; इव (iva) - like;]
(The Pāṇḍavas and (having been) surrounded by assembled kings then shone, O great king, like planets (shining) among groups of stars.)
O great king, the Pāṇḍavas, surrounded by the assembled kings, then shone like planets among groups of stars. (14-91-30)
राजभ्योऽपि ततः प्रादाद्रत्नानि विविधानि च। गजानश्वानलङ्कारान्स्त्रियो वस्त्राणि काञ्चनम् ॥१४-९१-३१॥
rājabhyo'pi tataḥ prādādratnāni vividhāni ca। gajānaśvānalāṅkārānstriyo vastrāṇi kāñcanam ॥14-91-31॥
[राजभ्यः (rājabhyaḥ) - to the kings; अपि (api) - also; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; विविधानि (vividhāni) - of various kinds; च (ca) - and; गजान् (gajān) - elephants; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; अलङ्कारान् (alaṅkārān) - ornaments; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; वस्त्राणि (vastrāṇi) - garments; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - gold;]
(To the kings also thereafter gave gems of various kinds and elephants, horses, ornaments, women, garments, gold.)
He then also gave to the kings various kinds of gems, elephants, horses, ornaments, women, garments, and gold. (14-91-31)
तद्धनौघमपर्यन्तं पार्थः पार्थिवमण्डले। विसृजञ्शुशुभे राजा यथा वैश्रवणस्तथा ॥१४-९१-३२॥
taddhana-aughamaparyantaṃ pārthaḥ pārthiva-maṇḍale। visṛjañśuśubhe rājā yathā vaiśravaṇastathā॥14-91-32॥
[तत् (tat) - that; धनौघम् (dhana-augham) - wealth (dhana) - multitude (augha); अपर्यन्तम् (aparyantam) - without end; limitless; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); पार्थिवमण्डले (pārthiva-maṇḍale) - in the assembly of kings; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - distributing; giving away; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - he shone; he appeared splendid; राजा (rājā) - the king; यथा (yathā) - just as; as; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera, god of wealth); तथा (tathā) - so; in that way;]
(That limitless multitude of wealth, Pārtha in the assembly of kings, distributing, shone the king just as Vaiśravaṇa so.)
Distributing that limitless multitude of wealth in the assembly of kings, Pārtha shone like the king Vaiśravaṇa. (14-91-32)
आनाय्य च तथा वीरं राजानं बभ्रुवाहनम्। प्रदाय विपुलं वित्तं गृहान्प्रास्थापयत्तदा ॥१४-९१-३३॥
ānāyya ca tathā vīraṃ rājānaṃ babhruvāhanam। pradāya vipulaṃ vittaṃ gṛhānprāsthāpayattadā ॥14-91-33॥

(Having brought and thus (the) hero, king Babhruvahana, having given abundant wealth, homewards sent forth then.)
Then, having brought the heroic king Babhruvahana and given him abundant wealth, he sent him homewards. (14-91-33)
दुःशलायाश्च तं पौत्रं बालकं पार्थिवर्षभ। स्वराज्ये पितृभिर्गुप्ते प्रीत्या समभिषेचयत् ॥१४-९१-३४॥
duḥśalāyāś ca taṃ pautraṃ bālakaṃ pārthivarṣabha। svarājye pitṛbhir gupté prītyā samabhiṣecayat ॥14-91-34॥
[दुःशलायाः (duḥśalāyāḥ) - of Duḥśalā; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - that; पौत्रं (pautraṃ) - grandson; बालकं (bālakaṃ) - boy; पार्थिवर्षभ (pārthivarṣabha) - o best of kings; स्वराज्ये (svarājye) - in hereditary kingdom; पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - by the fathers; गुप्ते (gupte) - protected; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; समभिषेचयत् (samabhiṣecayat) - caused to be anointed;]
(Of Duḥśalā and that grandson, boy, O best of kings, in hereditary kingdom protected by the fathers, with affection, (he) caused to be anointed.)
O best of kings, that boy, the grandson of Duḥśalā, was affectionately installed in his ancestral kingdom, which was protected by his forefathers. (14-91-34)
राज्ञश्चैवापि तान्सर्वान्सुविभक्तान्सुपूजितान्। प्रस्थापयामास वशी कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१४-९१-३५॥
rājñaś caiva api tān sarvān su-vibhaktān su-pūjitān। prasthāpayāmāsa vaśī kuru-rājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥14-91-35॥

(Of the kings and indeed also all of them, well-assigned, well-honored, the self-controlled Kuru king Yudhishthira sent off.)
The self-controlled Kuru king Yudhishthira sent off all those kings, having honored and assigned them well. (14-91-35)
एवं बभूव यज्ञः स धर्मराजस्य धीमतः। बह्वन्नधनरत्नौघः सुरामैरेयसागरः ॥१४-९१-३६॥
evaṃ babhūva yajñaḥ sa dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ। bahv-annadhana-ratnaughaḥ surā-maireya-sāgaraḥ ॥14-91-36॥

(Thus became the sacrifice of the wise Dharmarāja, abounding in food, wealth, and jewels, (and) an ocean of surā and maireya.)
Thus, the sacrifice of the wise Dharmarāja was abounding in food, wealth, and jewels, and was like an ocean of surā and maireya. (14-91-36)
सर्पिःपङ्का ह्रदा यत्र बहवश्चान्नपर्वताः। रसालाकर्दमाः कुल्या बभूवुर्भरतर्षभ ॥१४-९१-३७॥
sarpiḥ-paṅkā hradā yatra bahavaś-cānna-parvatāḥ। rasāla-akardamāḥ kulyā babhūvur bharatarṣabha ॥14-91-37॥
[सर्पिःपङ्का (sarpiḥ-paṅkā) - having clarified butter as mud; ह्रदा (hradā) - lakes; यत्र (yatra) - where; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; च (ca) - and; अन्नपर्वताः (anna-parvatāḥ) - mountains of food; रसालाकर्दमाः (rasāla-akardamāḥ) - with muddy water of mango (trees); कुल्या (kulyā) - canals; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; भरतरषभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;]
(Having clarified butter as mud, lakes where many mountains of food and canals with muddy water of mango (trees) became, O best of Bharatas.)

भक्ष्यषाण्डवरागाणां क्रियतां भुज्यतामिति। पशूनां वध्यतां चापि नान्तस्तत्र स्म दृश्यते ॥१४-९१-३८॥
bhakṣyaṣāṇḍavarāgāṇāṃ kriyatāṃ bhujyatāmiti. paśūnāṃ vadhyatāṃ cāpi nāntastatra sma dṛśyate ॥14-91-38॥

(Of food, eggs, and boars, let be prepared, let be eaten, thus; of animals, let be killed and also; not end there indeed is seen.)
They said, "Let food, eggs, and boars be prepared and eaten; let the animals also be killed." No end to this was ever seen there. (14-91-38)
मत्तोन्मत्तप्रमुदितं प्रगीतयुवतीजनम्। मृदङ्गशङ्खशब्दैश्च मनोरममभूत्तदा ॥१४-९१-३९॥
mattonmatta-pramuditaṁ pragīta-yuvatī-janam। mṛdaṅga-śaṅkha-śabdaiś ca manoramaṁ abhūt tadā ॥14-91-39॥
[मत्तोन्मत्तप्रमुदितम् (mattonmatta-pramuditam) - with intoxicated, exceedingly delighted; प्रगीतयुवतीजनम् (pragīta-yuvatī-janam) - with singing young women; मृदङ्गशङ्खशब्दैः (mṛdaṅga-śaṅkha-śabdaiḥ) - with sounds of mṛdaṅga (drum) and śaṅkha (conch); च (ca) - and; मनोरमम् (manoramam) - pleasant; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(With intoxicated and exceedingly delighted, singing young women, with sounds of mṛdaṅga and śaṅkha, and pleasant, it became then.)
At that time, it became delightful with intoxicated and joyous singing young women, and with the pleasant sounds of the mṛdaṅga drum and conch. (14-91-39)
दीयतां भुज्यतां चेति दिवारात्रमवारितम्। तं महोत्सवसङ्काशमतिहृष्टजनाकुलम् ॥ कथयन्ति स्म पुरुषा नानादेशनिवासिनः ॥१४-९१-४०॥
dīyatāṃ bhujyatāṃ ceti divārātram avāritam। taṃ mahotsavasaṅkāśam atihṛṣṭajanākulam॥ kathayanti sma puruṣā nānādeśanivāsinaḥ॥14-91-40॥
[दीयतां (dīyatām) - let it be given; भुज्यतां (bhujyatām) - let it be enjoyed; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; दिवारात्रम् (divārātram) - day and night; अवारितम् (avāritam) - without hindrance; तं (taṃ) - that; महोत्सवसङ्काशम् (mahotsavasankāśam) - appearing like a great festival; अतिहृष्टजनाकुलम् (atihṛṣṭajanākulam) - thronged with exceedingly delighted people; कथयन्ति (kathayanti) - they narrate; स्म (sma) - indeed; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; नानादेश निवासिनः (nānādeśa-nivāsinaḥ) - inhabitants from various regions;]
("Let it be given, let it be enjoyed," thus, day and night, without hindrance. That, appearing like a great festival, thronged with exceedingly delighted people, men indeed narrate, inhabitants from various regions.)
Men from various regions used to say, "Let it be given, let it be enjoyed," as there, day and night, without hindrance, appeared a scene like a grand festival, crowded with people who were exceedingly delighted. (14-91-40)
वर्षित्वा धनधाराभिः कामै रत्नैर्धनैस्तथा। विपाप्मा भरतश्रेष्ठः कृतार्थः प्राविशत्पुरम् ॥१४-९१-४१॥
varṣitvā dhanadhārābhiḥ kāmai ratnaiḥ dhanaiḥ tathā। vipāpmā bharataśreṣṭhaḥ kṛtārthaḥ prāviśat puram ॥14-91-41॥
[वर्षित्वा (varṣitvā) - having showered; धनधाराभिः (dhanadhārābhiḥ) - with streams of wealth; कामैः (kāmaiḥ) - with desired things; रत्नैः (ratnaiḥ) - with jewels; धनैः (dhanaiḥ) - with riches; तथा (tathā) - thus; विपाप्मा (vipāpmā) - sinless; भरतश्रेष्ठः (bharataśreṣṭhaḥ) - best among the Bharatas; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - accomplished his purpose; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; पुरम् (puram) - city;]
(Having showered with streams of wealth, with desired things, with jewels, with riches, thus the sinless, best among the Bharatas, accomplished his purpose, entered the city.)
Having dispensed streams of wealth, fulfilling desires with jewels and riches, the sinless and accomplished hero, best among the Bharatas, entered the city. (14-91-41)
