हन्त वो वर्तयिष्यामि दानस्य परमं फलम्। न्यायलब्धस्य सूक्ष्मस्य विप्रदत्तस्य यद्द्विजाः ॥१४-९३-१॥
hanta vo vartayiṣyāmi dānasya paramaṃ phalam। nyāyalabdhasya sūkṣmasya vipradattasya yad dvijāḥ ॥14-93-1॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; verily; वः (vaḥ) - to you (plural); वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall declare; दानस्य (dānasya) - of gift; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; highest; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; न्यायलब्धस्य (nyāyalabdhasya) - righteously-obtained; सूक्ष्मस्य (sūkṣmasya) - subtle; small; slight; विप्रदत्तस्य (vipradattasya) - given by a Brāhmaṇa; यत् (yat) - which; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - O twice-born; O Brāhmaṇas;]
(Indeed to you I shall declare of gift the supreme fruit. Of righteously obtained, of subtle, of Brāhmaṇa-given which, O twice-born.)
Indeed, I shall declare to you, O Brāhmaṇas, the supreme fruit of gifts—specifically that which is obtained righteously, is subtle, and given by a Brāhmaṇa. (14-93-1)
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे धर्मज्ञैर्बहुभिर्वृते। उञ्छवृत्तिर्द्विजः कश्चित्कापोतिरभवत्पुरा ॥१४-९३-२॥
dharmakṣetre kurukṣetre dharmajñair bahubhir vṛte। uñchavṛttir dvijaḥ kaścit kāpotir abhavat purā ॥14-93-2॥
[धर्मक्षेत्रे (dharmakṣetre) - in the holy field; कुरुक्षेत्रे (kurukṣetre) - in Kurukṣetra; धर्मज्ञैः (dharmajñaiḥ) - by those who know dharma; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; वृते (vṛte) - surrounded; उञ्छवृत्तिः (uñchavṛttiḥ) - living by gleaning; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - a twice-born (Brahmin); कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; कापोतिः (kāpotiḥ) - named Kāpoti; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(In the holy field, in Kurukṣetra, surrounded by many knowers of dharma; someone, a twice-born living by gleaning, named Kāpoti, was formerly.)
Once, in the field of dharma, Kurukṣetra, where many who knew dharma had gathered, there lived a certain twice-born named Kāpoti, who subsisted by gleaning. (14-93-2)
सभार्यः सह पुत्रेण सस्नुषस्तपसि स्थितः। वधूचतुर्थो वृद्धः स धर्मात्मा नियतेन्द्रियः ॥१४-९३-३॥
sabhāryaḥ saha putreṇa sasnuṣastapasi sthitaḥ। vadhūcaturtho vṛddhaḥ sa dharmātmā niyatendriyaḥ॥14-93-3॥
[सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with wife; सह (saha) - together; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - with son; सस्नुषः (sasnuṣaḥ) - with daughter-in-law; तपसि (tapasi) - in penance; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; वधूचतुर्थः (vadhūcaturthaḥ) - with daughter-in-law as fourth; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; नियतेन्द्रियः (niyatendriyaḥ) - with controlled senses;]

He, the aged and righteous-souled man of controlled senses, together with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law (as the fourth), dwelt engaged in penance. (14-93-3)
षष्ठे काले तदा विप्रो भुङ्क्ते तैः सह सुव्रतः। षष्ठे काले कदाचिच्च तस्याहारो न विद्यते ॥ भुङ्क्तेऽन्यस्मिन्कदाचित्स षष्ठे काले द्विजोत्तमः ॥१४-९३-४॥
ṣaṣṭhe kāle tadā vipro bhuṅkte taiḥ saha suvrataḥ। ṣaṣṭhe kāle kadācic ca tasyāhāro na vidyate॥ bhuṅkte'nyasmin kadācit sa ṣaṣṭhe kāle dvijottamaḥ॥14-93-4॥
[षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - in the sixth (period); काले (kāle) - time; period; तदा (tadā) - then; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - eats; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; सह (saha) - together; सुव्रतः (suvrataḥ) - the virtuous one; षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - in the sixth (period); काले (kāle) - time; period; कदाचित् (kadācit) - sometimes; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - his; आहारः (āhāraḥ) - food; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - eats; अन्यस्मिन् (anyasmin) - at another (time); कदाचित् (kadācit) - sometimes; सः (saḥ) - he; षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - in the sixth (period); काले (kāle) - time; period; द्विजोत्तमः (dvijottamaḥ) - the best of Brāhmaṇas;]
(In the sixth time, then the Brāhmaṇa, the virtuous one, eats together with them. In the sixth time, sometimes his food does not exist. Sometimes, at another time, the best of Brāhmaṇas eats in the sixth period. (14-93-4))
Then, in the sixth period, the virtuous Brāhmaṇa eats with them. Sometimes, in the sixth period, he has no food. Occasionally, at a different time, the best of Brāhmaṇas eats in the sixth period. (14-93-4)
कपोतधर्मिणस्तस्य दुर्भिक्षे सति दारुणे। नाविद्यत तदा विप्राः सञ्चयस्तान्निबोधत ॥ क्षीणौषधिसमावायो द्रव्यहीनोऽभवत्तदा ॥१४-९३-५॥
kapotadharmiṇas tasya durbhikṣe sati dāruṇe। nāvidyata tadā viprāḥ sañcayas tān nibodhata ॥ kṣīṇauṣadhisamāvāyo dravyahīno'bhavat tadā ॥14-93-5॥
[कपोतधर्मिणः (kapotadharmiṇaḥ) - those of the nature of doves; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दुर्भिक्षे (durbhikṣe) - in famine; सति (sati) - while it prevailed; दारुणे (dāruṇe) - terrible; न (na) - not; अविद्यत (avidyata) - existed; तदा (tadā) - then; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmins; सञ्चयः (sañcayaḥ) - accumulation; तान् (tān) - those; निबोधत (nibodhata) - know; क्षीण (kṣīṇa) - reduced; औषधि (auṣadhi) - herbs; समावायः (samāvāyaḥ) - collection; द्रव्य-हीनः (dravya-hīnaḥ) - lacking in wealth; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Those of the nature of doves, of him, in famine, while it prevailed, terrible, not, existed, then, Brāhmins, accumulation, those, know. Reduced herbs collection, lacking in wealth, became, then.)
Of him, whose ways were like doves, during a terrible famine, then, no accumulation existed among the Brāhmins—know this. At that time, the collection of herbs was reduced and wealth was lacking. (14-93-5)
काले कालेऽस्य सम्प्राप्ते नैव विद्येत भोजनम्। क्षुधापरिगताः सर्वे प्रातिष्ठन्त तदा तु ते ॥१४-९३-६॥
kāle kāle'sya samprāpte naiva vidyeta bhojanam. kṣudhāparigatāḥ sarve prātiṣṭhanta tadā tu te ॥14-93-6॥
[काले काले (kāle kāle) - in every (due) time; in every (due) time; अस्य (asya) - of him; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; न एव (na eva) - not indeed; विद्येत (vidyeta) - would be found; भोजनम् (bhojanam) - food; क्षुधा-परिगताः (kṣudhā-parigatāḥ) - overcome by hunger; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रातिष्ठन्त (prātiṣṭhanta) - set out; तदा (tadā) - then; तु (tu) - and; ते (te) - they;]
(In every (appointed) time, for him, when it arrived, food would not indeed be found. All, overcome by hunger, then, and they set out.)
At every appointed time, when his hour came, there was indeed no food to be found. Then, all of them, overcome by hunger, set out. (14-93-6)
उञ्छंस्तदा शुक्लपक्षे मध्यं तपति भास्करे। उष्णार्तश्च क्षुधार्तश्च स विप्रस्तपसि स्थितः ॥ उञ्छमप्राप्तवानेव सार्धं परिजनेन ह ॥१४-९३-७॥
uñchaṁs-tadā śuklapakṣe madhyaṁ tapati bhāskare| uṣṇārtaś-ca kṣudhārtaś-ca sa vipras-tapasi sthitaḥ ॥ uñcham-aprāptavān-eva sārdhaṁ parijanena ha ॥14-93-7॥
[उञ्छम् (uñcham) - gleaning (grains left after harvest); तदा (tadā) - then; शुक्लपक्षे (śuklapakṣe) - in the bright fortnight; मध्यम् (madhyam) - midday; तपति (tapati) - shines (with heat); भास्करे (bhāskare) - with the sun; उष्णार्तः (uṣṇārtaḥ) - afflicted by heat; च (ca) - and; क्षुधार्तः (kṣudhārtaḥ) - afflicted by hunger; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remained; उञ्छम् (uñcham) - gleaning; अप्राप्तवान् (aprāptavān) - not obtained; एव (eva) - indeed; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; परिजनेन (parijanena) - with attendants; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Gleaning then, in the bright fortnight, at midday, when the sun shines, afflicted by heat and afflicted by hunger, he, the brāhmaṇa, remained in austerity. Not having obtained gleanings indeed, together with attendants indeed.)
During the bright fortnight, at midday when the sun was blazing, afflicted by heat and hunger, that brāhmaṇa persisted in austerity, without having obtained any gleanings, together with his attendants. (14-93-7)
स तथैव क्षुधाविष्टः स्पृष्ट्वा तोयं यथाविधि। क्षपयामास तं कालं कृच्छ्रप्राणो द्विजोत्तमः ॥१४-९३-८॥
sa tathaiva kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ spṛṣṭvā toyaṃ yathāvidhi| kṣapayāmāsa taṃ kālaṃ kṛcchraprāṇo dvijottamaḥ ॥14-93-8॥
[स (sa) - he; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; in that very manner; क्षुधाविष्टः (kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ) - afflicted by hunger; स्पृष्ट्वा (spṛṣṭvā) - having touched; तोयं (toyam) - water; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule; properly; क्षपयामास (kṣapayāmāsa) - he spent; he passed; तं (tam) - that; कालं (kālam) - time; period; कृच्छ्रप्राणः (kṛcchraprāṇaḥ) - scarcely alive; whose life was difficult; द्विजोत्तमः (dvijottamaḥ) - the best of twice-born; noble Brāhmaṇa;]
(He, just so, afflicted by hunger, having touched water according to rule, spent that period, scarcely alive, the best of twice-born.)
Afflicted by hunger, he—noble among Brāhmaṇas—having ritually touched water, spent that period with great difficulty, scarcely sustaining his life. (14-93-8)
अथ षष्ठे गते काले यवप्रस्थमुपार्जयत्। यवप्रस्थं च ते सक्तूनकुर्वन्त तपस्विनः ॥१४-९३-९॥
atha ṣaṣṭhe gate kāle yavaprastham upārjayat। yavaprasthaṃ ca te saktūn akurvanta tapasvinaḥ ॥14-93-9॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - in the sixth; गते (gate) - having gone; passed; काले (kāle) - time; period; यवप्रस्थम् (yavaprastham) - a prastha (measure) of barley; barley-measure; उपार्जयत् (upārjayat) - obtained; acquired; यवप्रस्थम् (yavaprastham) - barley-measure; prastha of barley; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched flour; sattu; अकुर्वन्त (akurvanta) - made; prepared; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; those practicing austerity;]
(Now, when the sixth period had passed, (he) obtained a measure of barley. And the ascetics made sattu from the measure of barley.)
Then, in the sixth period, (he) acquired a measure of barley. The ascetics made sattu (parched barley flour) from that measure of barley. (14-93-9)
कृतजप्याह्विकास्ते तु हुत्वा वह्निं यथाविधि। कुडवं कुडवं सर्वे व्यभजन्त तपस्विनः ॥१४-९३-१०॥
kṛta-japya-āhvikaḥ te tu hutvā vahniṃ yathā-vidhi| kuḍavaṃ kuḍavaṃ sarve vyabhajanta tapasvinaḥ ॥14-93-10॥
[कृतजप्याह्विकाः (kṛta-japya-āhvikaḥ) - having performed japya and āhvika rites; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered (oblation); वह्निम् (vahnim) - the fire; यथाविधि (yathā-vidhi) - according to rule; कुडवं (kuḍavam) - vessel (of food); कुडवं (kuḍavam) - vessel (of food); सर्वे (sarve) - all; व्यभजन्त (vyabhajanta) - they distributed; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics;]
(Having performed japya and āhvika rites, they but having offered the fire according to rule, vessel vessel all distributed ascetics.)
But after performing the japya and āhvika rites, and having duly offered oblations into the fire, all the ascetics distributed the food vessels among themselves. (14-93-10)
अथागच्छद्द्विजः कश्चिदतिथिर्भुञ्जतां तदा। ते तं दृष्ट्वातिथिं तत्र प्रहृष्टमनसोऽभवन् ॥१४-९३-११॥
athāgacchad dvijaḥ kaścid atithiḥ bhuñjatāṃ tadā. te taṃ dṛṣṭvā atithim tatra prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ abhavan ॥14-93-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आगच्छत् (āgacchat) - approached; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; भुञ्जताम् (bhuñjatām) - (of those) eating; तदा (tadā) - then; ते (te) - they; तम् (tam) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अतिथिम् (atithim) - guest; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रहृष्टमनसः (prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - gladdened in mind; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(Then approached a Brāhmaṇa guest while (they were) eating at that time. They, having seen that guest there, became gladdened in mind.)
Then, while they were eating, a Brāhmaṇa guest happened to arrive. Seeing the guest there, they became gladdened in their hearts. (14-93-11)
तेऽभिवाद्य सुखप्रश्नं पृष्ट्वा तमतिथिं तदा। विशुद्धमनसो दान्ताः श्रद्धादमसमन्विताः ॥१४-९३-१२॥
te'bhivādya sukhapraśnaṃ pṛṣṭvā tamatithiṃ tadā। viśuddhamanaso dāntāḥ śraddhādamasamanvitāḥ ॥14-93-12॥
[ते (te) - they; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; सुखप्रश्नं (sukhapraśnam) - well-being inquiry; पृष्ट्वा (pṛṣṭvā) - having asked; तम् (tam) - him; अतिथिम् (atithim) - guest; तदा (tadā) - then; विशुद्धमनसः (viśuddhamanasaḥ) - with pure minds; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - self-restrained; श्रद्धा-दम-समन्विताः (śraddhā-dama-samanvitāḥ) - endowed with faith and self-control;]
(They, having saluted and having asked for the well-being of that guest then, with pure minds, self-restrained and endowed with faith and self-control.)
They, after saluting and inquiring about the well-being of that guest at that time, approached him with pure minds, self-restraint, and full of faith and discipline. (14-93-12)
अनसूयवो गतक्रोधाः साधवो गतमत्सराः। त्यक्तमाना जितक्रोधा धर्मज्ञा द्विजसत्तमाः ॥१४-९३-१३॥
anasūyavo gatakrodhāḥ sādhavo gatamatsarāḥ। tyaktamānā jitakrodhā dharmajñā dvijasattamāḥ ॥14-93-13॥
[अनसूयवः (anasūyavaḥ) - not-envious ones; गतक्रोधाः (gatakrodhāḥ) - whose anger has departed; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - virtuous ones; गतमत्सराः (gatamatsarāḥ) - who are free from jealousy; त्यक्तमाना (tyaktamānā) - abandoning pride; जितक्रोधाः (jitakrodhāḥ) - having conquered anger; धर्मज्ञाः (dharmajñāḥ) - knowers of dharma; द्विजसत्तमाः (dvijasattamāḥ) - best of twice-born;]
(Not-envious ones, whose anger has departed, virtuous ones, who are free from jealousy, abandoning pride, having conquered anger, knowers of dharma, best of twice-born.)
The best of twice-born are those who are without envy, from whom anger and jealousy have departed, who are virtuous, who have abandoned pride, who have mastered their anger, and who know dharma. (14-93-13)
सब्रह्मचर्यं स्वं गोत्रं समाख्याय परस्परम्। कुटीं प्रवेशयामासुः क्षुधार्तमतिथिं तदा ॥१४-९३-१४॥
sabraḥmacaryaṃ svaṃ gotraṃ samākhyāya parasparam। kuṭīṃ praveśayāmāsuḥ kṣudhārtamatithiṃ tadā ॥14-93-14॥
[सब्रह्मचर्यं (sabraḥmacaryam) - one with the same discipline of celibacy; स्वं (svam) - their own; गोत्रं (gotram) - lineage; समाख्याय (samākhyāya) - having mutually introduced; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; कुटीं (kuṭīm) - hut; प्रवेशयामासुः (praveśayāmāsuḥ) - caused to enter; क्षुधार्तम् (kṣudhārtam) - afflicted by hunger; अतिथिं (atithim) - guest; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having mutually introduced their own lineage as fellow celibates, then they caused the guest afflicted by hunger to enter the hut.)
Having introduced their respective lineages to each other as fellow celibates, they then admitted the guest, who was stricken with hunger, into the hut. (14-93-14)
इदमर्घ्यं च पाद्यं च बृसी चेयं तवानघ। शुचयः सक्तवश्चेमे नियमोपार्जिताः प्रभो ॥ प्रतिगृह्णीष्व भद्रं ते मया दत्ता द्विजोत्तम ॥१४-९३-१५॥
idam arghyaṁ ca pādyaṁ ca bṛsī ca iyam tav ān agha. śucayaḥ saktavaś ca ime niyamopārjitāḥ prabho ॥ pratigṛhṇīṣva bhadraṁ te mayā dattā dvijottama ॥14-93-15॥
[इदमर्घ्यं (idam arghyam) - this arghya (offering of water); च (ca) - and; पाद्यं (pādyam) - water for feet-washing; च (ca) - and; बृसी (bṛsī) - seat (mat); च (ca) - and; इयं (iyaṁ) - this; तव (tava) - for you; अनघ (anagha) - sinless one; शुचयः (śucayaḥ) - pure (things); सक्तवः (saktavaḥ) - rice-cakes; च (ca) - and; इमे (ime) - these; नियमोपार्जिताः (niyamopārjitāḥ) - acquired by observance of vow; प्रभो (prabho) - lord; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; भद्रं (bhadraṁ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; मया (mayā) - by me; दत्ता (dattā) - given; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - best of twice-born;]
(This arghya and pādya and this seat are for you, sinless one. Pure rice-cakes also, these acquired through observance of vow, O lord. Accept; auspiciousness to you, given by me, best of twice-born.)

इत्युक्तः प्रतिगृह्याथ सक्तूनां कुडवं द्विजः। भक्षयामास राजेन्द्र न च तुष्टिं जगाम सः ॥१४-९३-१६॥
ityuktaḥ pratigṛhyātha saktūnāṃ kuḍavaṃ dvijaḥ। bhakṣayāmāsa rājendra na ca tuṣṭiṃ jagāma saḥ॥14-93-16॥

(Thus addressed, having accepted then, of roasted flour a measure, the twice-born ate, O king, and not satisfaction he attained.)
Thus addressed, the brahmin took the measure of roasted flour and ate it, O King, but he did not attain satisfaction. (14-93-16)
स उञ्छवृत्तिः तं प्रेक्ष्य क्षुधापरिगतं द्विजम्। आहारं चिन्तयामास कथं तुष्टो भवेदिति ॥१४-९३-१७॥
sa uñchavṛttiḥ taṃ prekṣya kṣudhāparigataṃ dvijam। āhāraṃ cintayāmāsa kathaṃ tuṣṭo bhaved iti ॥14-93-17॥

तस्य भार्याब्रवीद्राजन्मद्भागो दीयतामिति। गच्छत्वेष यथाकामं सन्तुष्टो द्विजसत्तमः ॥१४-९३-१८॥
tasya bhāryābravīd rājann madbhāgo dīyatām iti। gacchatv eṣa yathākāmaṃ santuṣṭo dvijasattamaḥ॥14-93-18॥

(His wife said, O king, "let my share be given" thus. Let him go as he wishes, satisfied, O best of twice-born.)

इति ब्रुवन्तीं तां साध्वीं धर्मात्मा स द्विजर्षभः। क्षुधापरिगतां ज्ञात्वा सक्तूंस्तान्नाभ्यनन्दत ॥१४-९३-१९॥
iti bruvantīṁ tāṁ sādhvīṁ dharmātmā sa dvijarṣabhaḥ। kṣudhāparigatāṁ jñātvā saktuṁs tān nābhyanandata ॥14-93-19॥

(Thus speaking her, the virtuous, the righteous one, he, best of the twice-born, overcome by hunger, having known, the parched grains, those, did not welcome.)
Thus, seeing the virtuous lady speaking so and realizing that she was overcome by hunger, the righteous best of the twice-born did not welcome those parched grains. (14-93-19)
जानन्वृद्धां क्षुधार्तां च श्रान्तां ग्लानां तपस्विनीम्। त्वगस्थिभूतां वेपन्तीं ततो भार्यामुवाच ताम् ॥१४-९३-२०॥
jānanvṛddhāṃ kṣudhārtāṃ ca śrāntāṃ glānāṃ tapasvinīm। tvag-asthi-bhūtāṃ vepantīṃ tato bhāryām uvāca tām॥14-93-20॥
[जानन् (jānan) - knowing; वृद्धाम् (vṛddhām) - old; क्षुधार्ताम् (kṣudhārtām) - afflicted by hunger; च (ca) - and; श्रान्ताम् (śrāntām) - tired; ग्लानाम् (glānām) - weak; तपस्विनीम् (tapasvinīm) - ascetic woman; त्वगस्थिभूताम् (tvag-asthi-bhūtām) - reduced to skin and bone; वेपन्तीम् (vepantīm) - trembling; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ताम् (tām) - to her;]
(Knowing (her) old, afflicted by hunger and tired, weak, ascetic woman, reduced to skin and bone, trembling, then (he) said to (his) wife.)
Then, realizing that his wife was old, hungry, weary, weak, an ascetic, emaciated to skin and bone, and trembling, he spoke to her. (14-93-20)
अपि कीटपतङ्गानां मृगाणां चैव शोभने। स्त्रियो रक्ष्याश्च पोष्याश्च नैवं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१४-९३-२१॥
api kīṭapataṅgānāṃ mṛgāṇāṃ caiva śobhane। striyo rakṣyāś ca poṣyāś ca naivaṃ tvaṃ vaktum arhasi॥14-93-21॥
[अपि (api) - even; also; कीटपतङ्गानां (kīṭapataṅgānāṃ) - of insects and flying creatures; मृगाणां (mṛgāṇāṃ) - of animals; of deer; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; च (ca) - and; पोष्याः (poṣyāḥ) - to be maintained; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are fit; deserve;]
(Even of insects and flying creatures, of animals indeed, O beautiful one, women are to be protected and maintained, not thus you are fit to speak.)
O beautiful one, even among insects, flying creatures, and animals, women are to be protected and supported; thus, you should not speak in this way. (14-93-21)
अनुकम्पितो नरो नार्या पुष्टो रक्षित एव च। प्रपतेद्यशसो दीप्तान्न च लोकानवाप्नुयात् ॥१४-९३-२२॥
anukampito naro nāryā puṣṭo rakṣita eva ca। prapated yaśaso dīptān na ca lokān avāpnuyāt॥14-93-22॥
[अनुकम्पितः (anukampitaḥ) - shown compassion; नरः (naraḥ) - man; नार्या (nāryā) - by a woman; पुष्टः (puṣṭaḥ) - nourished; रक्षितः (rakṣitaḥ) - protected; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; प्रपतेत् (prapatet) - might fall; यशसः (yaśasaḥ) - from fame; दीप्तान् (dīptān) - brilliant; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - might attain;]
(A man shown compassion, nourished, protected indeed and by a woman, might fall from fame, and not attain the brilliant worlds.)
A man who is truly shown compassion, nourished, and protected by a woman may yet fall from fame and fail to attain the glorious worlds. (14-93-22)
इत्युक्ता सा ततः प्राह धर्मार्थौ नौ समौ द्विज। सक्तुप्रस्थचतुर्भागं गृहाणेमं प्रसीद मे ॥१४-९३-२३॥
ityuktā sā tataḥ prāha dharmārthau nau samau dvija। saktuprasthacaturbhāgaṃ gṛhāṇemaṃ prasīda me ॥14-93-23॥

(Thus addressed, she then spoke: "Righteousness and wealth are equal for us, O twice-born. Accept this quarter portion of a prastha of parched grain. Be pleased with me." (14-93-23))
Thus addressed, she then said: "For us, righteousness and wealth are equal, O twice-born. Please accept this quarter portion of a prastha of parched grain, and be pleased with me." (14-93-23)
सत्यं रतिश्च धर्मश्च स्वर्गश्च गुणनिर्जितः। स्त्रीणां पतिसमाधीनं काङ्क्षितं च द्विजोत्तम ॥१४-९३-२४॥
satyaṁ ratiś ca dharmaś ca svargaś ca guṇanirjitaḥ. strīṇāṁ patisamādhīnaṁ kāṅkṣitaṁ ca dvijottama ॥14-93-24॥
[सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; रति: (ratiḥ) - delight; च (ca) - and; धर्म: (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; स्वर्ग: (svargaḥ) - heaven; च (ca) - and; गुणनिर्जित: (guṇanirjitaḥ) - conquered by virtues; स्त्रीणां (strīṇām) - of women; पति-समाधीनं (pati-samādhīnam) - obedience to husband; काङ्क्षितं (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; च (ca) - and; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born;]
(Truth, delight and righteousness and heaven and conquered by virtues; of women, obedience to husband, desired and O best of twice-born.)
Truth, delight, righteousness, and heaven—these are attained by virtues; for women, obedience to the husband is desirable, O best of twice-born. (14-93-24)
ऋतुर्मातुः पितुर्बीजं दैवतं परमं पतिः। भर्तुः प्रसादात्स्त्रीणां वै रतिः पुत्रफलं तथा ॥१४-९३-२५॥
ṛturmātuḥ piturbījaṃ daivataṃ paramaṃ patiḥ। bhartuḥ prasādātstrīṇāṃ vai ratiḥ putraphalaṃ tathā॥14-93-25॥
[ऋतु: (ṛtuḥ) - season; (menstrual cycle); मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; बीजम् (bījam) - seed; दैवतम् (daivatam) - divine agency; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the favor; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; वै (vai) - indeed; रतिः (ratiḥ) - desire; union; पुत्रफलं (putraphalaṃ) - the fruit (offspring) as a son; तथा (tathā) - so, also;]
(Season (menstrual cycle), of the mother; of the father; seed; divine agency; supreme; husband. By the favor of the husband, of women, indeed, desire (union), the offspring as son, so (also).)
The season of the mother, the father’s seed, divine agency, and the supreme is the husband. By the husband’s favor, indeed, women’s desire results in a son as offspring likewise. (14-93-25)
पालनाद्धि पतिस्त्वं मे भर्तासि भरणान्मम। पुत्रप्रदानाद्वरदस्तस्मात्सक्तून्गृहाण मे ॥१४-९३-२६॥
pālanāddhi patis tvaṃ me bhartāsi bharaṇān mama। putrapradānād varadas tasmāt saktūn gṛhāṇa me॥14-93-26॥
[पालनात् (pālanāt) - from protecting; हि (hi) - indeed; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मे (me) - to me; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; असि (asi) - are; भरणात् (bharaṇāt) - from supporting; मम (mama) - of me; पुत्रप्रदाने (putra-pradānāt) - from granting a son; वरदः (varadaḥ) - bestower of boons; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सक्तून् (saktūn) - roasted grains; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; मे (me) - from me;]
(From protecting indeed lord you to me, you are my husband; from supporting of me, in granting a son bestower of boons; therefore roasted grains accept from me.)
Indeed, by your protection you are my lord, by your support you are my husband, and by granting a son you are the giver of boons; therefore, accept these roasted grains from me. (14-93-26)
जरापरिगतो वृद्धः क्षुधार्तो दुर्बलो भृशम्। उपवासपरिश्रान्तो यदा त्वमपि कर्शितः ॥१४-९३-२७॥
jarāparigato vṛddhaḥ kṣudhārto durbalo bhṛśam। upavāsapariśrānto yadā tvam api karśitaḥ ॥14-93-27॥
[जरापरिगतः (jarāparigataḥ) - overcome by old age; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; क्षुधार्तः (kṣudhārtaḥ) - afflicted by hunger; दुर्बलः (durbalaḥ) - feeble; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; उपवासपरिश्रान्तः (upavāsapariśrāntaḥ) - wearied by fasting; यदा (yadā) - when; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कर्शितः (karśitaḥ) - emaciated;]
(Overcome by old age, aged, afflicted by hunger, feeble exceedingly, wearied by fasting, when you also emaciated.)
When you have grown old, are aged, afflicted by hunger, exceedingly feeble, exhausted by fasting, and you too are emaciated. (14-93-27)
इत्युक्तः स तया सक्तून्प्रगृह्येदं वचोऽब्रवीत्। द्विज सक्तूनिमान्भूयः प्रतिगृह्णीष्व सत्तम ॥१४-९३-२८॥
ity-uktaḥ sa tayā saktūn pragṛhya idaṃ vaco 'bravīt। dvija saktūn imān bhūyaḥ pratigṛhṇīṣva sattama ॥14-93-28॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; सः (saḥ) - he; तया (tayā) - by her; सक्तून् (saktūn) - roasted grain (fried flour); प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born (Brāhmaṇa); सक्तून् (saktūn) - roasted grain (fried flour); इमान् (imān) - these; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; सत्तम (sattama) - best one;]
(Thus, having been addressed by her, he, having taken the roasted grain, spoke this word: "O twice-born, accept these roasted grains again, O best one.")
Thus addressed by her, he took the roasted grains and spoke these words: "O Brāhmaṇa, please accept these roasted grains again, O best of men." (14-93-28)
स तान्प्रगृह्य भुक्त्वा च न तुष्टिमगमद्द्विजः। तमुञ्छवृत्तिरालक्ष्य ततश्चिन्तापरोऽभवत् ॥१४-९३-२९॥
sa tān pragṛhya bhuktvā ca na tuṣṭim agamat dvijaḥ। tam uñcha-vṛttim ālakṣya tataś cintāparaḥ abhavat ॥14-93-29॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - them; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; तुष्टिम् (tuṣṭim) - satisfaction; अगमत् (agamat) - obtained; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmin); तम् (tam) - him; उञ्छवृत्तिम् (uñcha-vṛttim) - gleaning-life; आलक्ष्य (ālakṣya) - having observed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चिन्तापरः (cintāparaḥ) - full of worry; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(He, having taken them and having eaten, and not obtained satisfaction, the twice-born; him, the life of gleaning having observed, then became full of worry.)
Having taken and eaten the food, the Brahmin did not find satisfaction. Observing that person's way of subsisting on gleanings, he then became full of worry. (14-93-29)
पुत्र उवाच॥

सक्तूनिमान्प्रगृह्य त्वं देहि विप्राय सत्तम। इत्येवं सुकृतं मन्ये तस्मादेतत्करोम्यहम् ॥१४-९३-३०॥
saktūnimān pragr̥hya tvaṃ dehi viprāya sattama। ityevaṃ sukṛtaṃ manye tasmād etat karomy aham ॥14-93-30॥
[सक्तूनिमान् (saktūn imān) - these flour-cakes; प्रगृह्य (pragr̥hya) - having taken; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; देहि (dehi) - give; विप्राय (viprāya) - to the Brāhmaṇa; सत्तम (sattama) - O best; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - so; सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) - a good deed; मन्ये (manye) - I consider; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एतत् (etat) - this; करोमि (karomi) - I do; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Having taken these flour-cakes, you give to the Brāhmaṇa, O best. Thus, such I consider as a good deed. Therefore, this I do.)
Taking these flour-cakes, give them to the Brāhmaṇa, O best one. Thinking thus, 'this is a virtuous act,' therefore I am doing this. (14-93-30)
भवान्हि परिपाल्यो मे सर्वयत्नैर्द्विजोत्तम। साधूनां काङ्क्षितं ह्येतत्पितुर्वृद्धस्य पोषणम् ॥१४-९३-३१॥
bhavān hi paripālyo me sarvayatnair dvijottama। sādhūnāṃ kāṅkṣitaṃ hy etat pitur vṛddhasya poṣaṇam ॥14-93-31॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (respectfully addressed); हि (hi) - indeed; परिपाल्यः (paripālyaḥ) - to be protected; मे (me) - by me; सर्वयत्नैः (sarvayatnaiḥ) - with all efforts; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; साधूनाम् (sādhūnām) - of the virtuous; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - aged; पोषणम् (poṣaṇam) - maintenance;]
(You indeed are to be protected by me with all efforts, O best of twice-born. Of the virtuous, this indeed is desired: the maintenance of an aged father.)
You truly are to be cared for by me in every way, O best of Brahmins. For the virtuous, the care of an aged father is indeed most desired. (14-93-31)
पुत्रार्थो विहितो ह्येष स्थाविर्ये परिपालनम्। श्रुतिरेषा हि विप्रर्षे त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ॥१४-९३-३२॥
putrārtho vihito hyeṣa sthāvirye paripālanam। śrutireṣā hi viprarṣe triṣu lokeṣu viśrutā ॥14-93-32॥
[पुत्रार्थः (putrārthaḥ) - purpose of a son; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - enjoined; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; स्थाविर्ये (sthāvirye) - in old age; परिपालनम् (paripālanam) - protection; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - revelation; एषा (eṣā) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among Brāhmaṇas; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; विश्रुता (viśrutā) - famous;]
(Purpose of a son is indeed enjoined; this protection in old age. This revelation, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, is indeed famous in the three worlds. (14-93-32))
The purpose of a son, namely protection in old age, is indeed enjoined; O sage among Brāhmaṇas, this teaching is well known throughout the three worlds. (14-93-32)
प्राणधारणमात्रेण शक्यं कर्तुं तपस्त्वया। प्राणो हि परमो धर्मः स्थितो देहेषु देहिनाम् ॥१४-९३-३३॥
prāṇadhāraṇamātreṇa śakyaṃ kartuṃ tapastvayā। prāṇo hi paramo dharmaḥ sthito deheṣu dehinām॥14-93-33॥
[प्राणधारणमात्रेण (prāṇadhāraṇamātreṇa) - by merely sustaining life-breath; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - can be done; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to perform; तपः (tapas) - austerity; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - the breath (vital force); हि (hi) - indeed; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty (law); स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - is present; देहेषु (deheṣu) - in bodies; देहिनाम् (dehinām) - of embodied beings;]
(By merely sustaining life-breath, austerity can be done by you. The breath indeed, supreme duty, is present in bodies of embodied beings.)
You can perform austerity simply by sustaining your breath. Indeed, the breath is the supreme duty present in the bodies of all living beings. (14-93-33)

अपि वर्षसहस्री त्वं बाल एव मतो मम। उत्पाद्य पुत्रं हि पिता कृतकृत्यो भवत्युत ॥१४-९३-३४॥
api varṣasahasrī tvaṁ bāla eva mato mama। utpādya putraṁ hi pitā kṛtakṛtyo bhavatyuta ॥14-93-34॥
[अपि (api) - even; वर्षसहस्रि (varṣasahasrī) - thousand-years-old (one); त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; बाल (bāla) - a child; एव (eva) - indeed; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; मम (mama) - by me; उत्पाद्य (utpādya) - having begotten; पुत्रम् (putram) - a son; हि (hi) - indeed; पिता (pitā) - a father; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - one who has fulfilled his duty; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Even if thousand-years-old you, a child indeed considered by me. Having begotten a son indeed a father one who has fulfilled his duty becomes indeed.)
Even if you are a thousand years old, to me you are still just a child. By begetting a son, a father indeed becomes one who has fulfilled his duty. (14-93-34)
बालानां क्षुद्बलवती जानाम्येतदहं विभो। वृद्धोऽहं धारयिष्यामि त्वं बली भव पुत्रक ॥१४-९३-३५॥
bālānāṃ kṣudbalavatī jānāmy etad ahaṃ vibho। vṛddho'ham dhārayiṣyāmi tvaṃ balī bhava putraka ॥14-93-35॥
[बालानाम् (bālānām) - of children; क्षुद् बलवती (kṣud balavatī) - hunger strong; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; एतत् (etad) - this; अहम् (aham) - I; विभो (vibho) - O lord; वृद्धः अहम् (vṛddhaḥ aham) - I (am) old; धारयिष्यामि (dhārayiṣyāmi) - I will endure; त्वम् (tvam) - you; बली भव (balī bhava) - be strong; पुत्रक (putraka) - dear son;]
(Of children hunger (is) strong, I know this, I, O lord. Old (am) I, I will endure, you be strong, dear son.)
I know that hunger is strong in children, O lord. I am old and will endure it; you be strong, dear son. (14-93-35)
जीर्णेन वयसा पुत्र न मा क्षुद्बाधतेऽपि च। दीर्घकालं तपस्तप्तं न मे मरणतो भयम् ॥१४-९३-३६॥
jīrṇena vayāsā putra na mā kṣudbādhate'pi ca। dīrghakālaṃ tapastaptaṃ na me maraṇato bhayam ॥14-93-36॥
[जीर्णेन (jīrṇena) - by old; by decayed; वयसा (vayasā) - age; by age; पुत्र (putra) - son; न (na) - not; मा (mā) - me; क्षुद्बाधतेऽपि (kṣudbādhate'pi) - hunger afflicts also; च (ca) - and; दीर्घकालं (dīrghakālaṃ) - for a long time; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - been practiced; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; for me; मरणतः (maraṇataḥ) - from death; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(By old age, son, not me hunger afflicts also and. For a long time austerity has been practiced, not by me from death fear.)
Because of old age, son, hunger does not trouble me at all; for I have long practiced austerities, and I have no fear of death. (14-93-36)

अपत्यमस्मि ते पुत्रस्त्राणात्पुत्रो हि विश्रुतः। आत्मा पुत्रः स्मृतस्तस्मात्त्राह्यात्मानमिहात्मना ॥१४-९३-३७॥
apatyamasmi te putrastrāṇātputro hi viśrutaḥ। ātmā putraḥ smṛtastasmāttrāhyātmānamihātmanā ॥14-93-37॥
[अपत्यम् (apatyam) - offspring; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (te) - your; पुत्र-स्त्राणात् (putra-strāṇāt) - from protecting (trāṇa) the son (putra); पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; हि (hi) - indeed; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - well-known; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्राहि (trāhi) - protect; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - your self; इह (iha) - here; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by yourself;]
(I am your offspring; by protecting the son, one is indeed well-known as 'son'. The self is considered as son; therefore, protect your self here by yourself.)
I am your child; since protecting the son is truly renowned as the act of a son. The self is regarded as one's son; therefore, protect yourself here by your own self. (14-93-37)

रूपेण सदृशस्त्वं मे शीलेन च दमेन च। परीक्षितश्च बहुधा सक्तूनादद्मि ते ततः ॥१४-९३-३८॥
rūpeṇa sadṛśastvaṃ me śīlena ca damena ca. parīkṣitaśca bahudhā saktūnādadmi te tataḥ ॥14-93-38॥
[रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - similar; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मे (me) - to me; शीलेन (śīlena) - by character; च (ca) - and; दमेन (damena) - by self-control; च (ca) - and; परीक्षितः (parīkṣitaḥ) - tested; च (ca) - and; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; सक्तून् (saktūn) - barley-meal; अदद्मि (adadmi) - I have given; ते (te) - to you; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(By form similar you to me, by character and by self-control and, tested and in many ways, barley-meal I have given to you then.)
You are similar to me in form, and also in character and self-control. Having tested you in many ways, I have therefore given you barley-meal. (14-93-38)
इत्युक्त्वादाय तान्सक्तून्प्रीतात्मा द्विजसत्तमः। प्रहसन्निव विप्राय स तस्मै प्रददौ तदा ॥१४-९३-३९॥
ity uktvā ādāya tān saktūn prītātmā dvijasattamaḥ | prahasann iva viprāya sa tasmai pradadau tadā ॥14-93-39॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; तान् (tān) - those; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grains; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with a delighted mind; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - the best of the twice-born; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; विप्राय (viprāya) - to the brāhmaṇa; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(Thus having spoken, having taken those parched grains, with a delighted mind, the best of the twice-born, as if smiling, to the brāhmaṇa, he to him gave at that time.)
Having spoken thus, the best of the twice-born, his heart delighted, took those parched grains and, as if smiling, gave them at that time to the brāhmaṇa. (14-93-39)
भुक्त्वा तानपि सक्तून्स नैव तुष्टो बभूव ह। उञ्छवृत्तिस्तु सव्रीडो बभूव द्विजसत्तमः ॥१४-९३-४०॥
bhuktvā tān api saktūn naiva tuṣṭo babhūva ha। uñchavṛttis tu savrīḍo babhūva dvijasattamaḥ ॥14-93-40॥
[भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; तान् (tān) - those; अपि (api) - also; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grains; नैव (na eva) - not indeed; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - satisfied; बभूव (babhūva) - he became; ह (ha) - indeed; उञ्छवृत्तिः (uñchavṛttiḥ) - one living by gleaning; तु (tu) - but; सव्रीडः (savrīḍaḥ) - ashamed; बभूव (babhūva) - became; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - best among twice-born (Brahmins);]
(Having eaten those parched grains also, he indeed did not become satisfied. But the best among twice-born (Brahmins), living by gleaning, became ashamed.)
Even after eating those parched grains, he truly did not feel satisfied. However, the best of the twice-born living on gleanings felt ashamed. (14-93-40)
तं वै वधूः स्थिता साध्वी ब्राह्मणप्रियकाम्यया। सक्तूनादाय संहृष्टा गुरुं तं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१४-९३-४१॥
taṃ vai vadhūḥ sthitā sādhuī brāhmaṇapriyakāmyayā। saktūn ādāya saṃhṛṣṭā guruṃ taṃ vākyam abravīt ॥14-93-41॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; वधूः (vadhūḥ) - the bride; the young wife; स्थिताः (sthitā) - standing; साध्वी (sādhuī) - virtuous; ब्राह्मणप्रियकाम्यया (brāhmaṇapriyakāmyayā) - with a desire to please the Brāhmaṇa; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grains; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; संहृष्टा (saṃhṛṣṭā) - joyful; गुरुम् (gurum) - the preceptor; तं (tam) - him; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Him indeed, the bride who was standing, virtuous, with a desire to please the Brāhmaṇa, having taken parched grains, joyful, to the preceptor, to him, words spoke.)
Indeed, the virtuous young wife, standing with a desire to please the Brāhmaṇa, joyfully took parched grains and spoke these words to her preceptor. (14-93-41)
सन्तानात्तव सन्तानं मम विप्र भविष्यति। सक्तूनिमानतिथये गृहीत्वा त्वं प्रयच्छ मे ॥१४-९३-४२॥
santānāt tava santānaṁ mama vipra bhaviṣyati। saktūnim ān atithaye gṛhītvā tvaṁ prayaccha me ॥14-93-42॥
[सन्तानात् (santānāt) - from (your) offspring; तव (tava) - your; सन्तानं (santānam) - offspring; मम (mama) - my; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grains; इमान् (imān) - these; अतिथये (atithaye) - to the guest; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; मे (me) - to me;]
(From your offspring, my brāhmaṇa offspring will become. Having taken these parched grains for the guest, you give to me.)
From your offspring, a brāhmaṇa descendant of mine will arise. Take these parched grains for the guest and give them to me. (14-93-42)
तव प्रसवनिर्वृत्या मम लोकाः किलाक्षयाः। पौत्रेण तानवाप्नोति यत्र गत्वा न शोचति ॥१४-९३-४३॥
tava prasava-nirvṛtyā mama lokāḥ kilākṣayāḥ। pautreṇa tān avāpnoti yatra gatvā na śocati॥14-93-43॥
[तव (tava) - of you; प्रसवनिर्वृत्या (prasava-nirvṛtyā) - by the accomplishment of offspring; मम (mama) - my; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; किल (kila) - indeed; अक्षयाः (akṣayāḥ) - imperishable; पौत्रेण (pautreṇa) - by the grandson; तान् (tān) - those; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; यत्र (yatra) - where; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; न (na) - not; शोचति (śocati) - grieves;]
(By the accomplishment of offspring of you, my worlds indeed are imperishable; by the grandson, he obtains those where, having gone, he does not grieve.)
Indeed, through your begetting a child my worlds become imperishable; and by means of the grandson, one attains those (worlds) where, having reached, there is no grief. (14-93-43)
धर्माद्या हि यथा त्रेता वह्नित्रेता तथैव च। तथैव पुत्रपौत्राणां स्वर्गे त्रेता किलाक्षया ॥१४-९३-४४॥
dharmādyā hi yathā tretā vahnitretā tathaiva ca। tathaiva putrapautrāṇāṃ svarge tretā kilākṣayā॥14-93-44॥
[धर्माद्या (dharmādyā) - dharmāḥ and so on; the dharmas and others; हि (hi) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - just as; त्रेता (tretā) - Treta Yuga; the second age; वह्नित्रेता (vahnitretā) - sacrificial fire of three kindlings; fire-rite with three hearths; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; पुत्रपौत्राणां (putrapautrāṇāṃ) - of sons and grandsons; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; त्रेता (tretā) - Treta Yuga; the second age; किल (kilā) - indeed; अक्षया (akṣayā) - imperishable;]
(Dharmas and others indeed just as Treta, sacrificial fire of three kindlings in the same way and; in the same way of sons and grandsons in heaven Treta indeed is imperishable.)
Just as the duties and so on are associated with the Treta (yuga), and the sacrificial fire of three kindlings likewise; so also, the connection of sons and grandsons in heaven is imperishable like the Treta. (14-93-44)
पितॄंस्त्राणात्तारयति पुत्र इत्यनुशुश्रुम। पुत्रपौत्रैश्च नियतं साधुलोकानुपाश्नुते ॥१४-९३-४५॥
pitṝṁs trāṇāt tārayati putra ity anuśuśruma। putrapautraiś ca niyataṁ sādhulokān upāśnute ॥14-93-45॥
[पितॄन् (pitṝn) - forefathers;␣ त्राणात् (trāṇāt) - from delivering (from saving);␣ तारयति (tārayati) - causes to cross over; saves;␣ पुत्र (putra) - son;␣ इति (iti) - thus;␣ अनुशुश्रुम (anuśuśruma) - we have heard;␣ पुत्रपौत्रैः (putrapautraiḥ) - by sons and grandsons;␣ च (ca) - and;␣ नियतं (niyatam) - certainly;␣ साधुलोकान् (sādhulokān) - worlds of the virtuous;␣ उपाश्नुते (upāśnute) - attains;␣;]
(Forefathers from delivering causes to cross over the son thus we have heard. By sons and grandsons certainly the worlds of the virtuous attains.)
We have heard that a son saves his forefathers from danger. And by means of sons and grandsons, one certainly attains the worlds of the virtuous. (14-93-45)
श्वशुर उवाच॥

वातातपविशीर्णाङ्गीं त्वां विवर्णां निरीक्ष्य वै। कर्शितां सुव्रताचारे क्षुधाविह्वलचेतसम् ॥१४-९३-४६॥
vātātapa-viśīrṇāṅgīṃ tvāṃ vivarṇāṃ nirīkṣya vai। karśitāṃ suvratācāre kṣudhā-vihvalacetasam ॥14-93-46॥
[वातातपविशीर्णाङ्गीं (vātātapa-viśīrṇāṅgīṃ) - whose limbs are wasted by wind and heat; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; विवर्णां (vivarṇām) - pale; निरीक्ष्य (nirīkṣya) - having seen; वै (vai) - indeed; कर्शितां (karśitām) - emaciated; सुव्रताचारे (suvratācāre) - in excellent conduct of vows; क्षुधाविह्वलचेतसम् (kṣudhā-vihvala-cetasam) - with mind afflicted by hunger;]
(Having seen you, whose limbs are wasted by wind and heat, pale, indeed emaciated, in excellent conduct of vows, with your mind afflicted by hunger.)
Seeing you, whose limbs are wasted by wind and heat, pale, emaciated, of supreme conduct, and with your mind shaken by hunger. (14-93-46)
कथं सक्तून्ग्रहीष्यामि भूत्वा धर्मोपघातकः। कल्याणवृत्ते कल्याणि नैवं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१४-९३-४७॥
kathaṁ saktūn-grahīṣyāmi bhūtvā dharmopaghātakaḥ। kalyāṇavṛtte kalyāṇi naivaṁ tvaṁ vaktum-arhasi ॥14-93-47॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; सक्तून् (saktūn) - barley meal; (accusative plural) ग्रहिष्यामि (grahīṣyāmi) - shall I take; (1st person singular, future) भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; धर्मोपघातकः (dharmopaghātakaḥ) - destroyer of righteousness; (nominative singular masculine) कल्याणवृत्ते (kalyāṇavṛtte) - one of auspicious conduct; (locative singular) कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; न (na) - not; एवम् (evam) - thus; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought (to);]
(How shall I take barley meal, having become a destroyer of righteousness? To one of auspicious conduct, O auspicious one, not thus you ought to speak.)
How could I take barley meal by becoming a destroyer of righteousness? O auspicious lady of virtuous conduct, you should not speak this way. (14-93-47)
षष्ठे काले व्रतवतीं शीलशौचसमन्विताम्। कृच्छ्रवृत्तिं निराहारां द्रक्ष्यामि त्वां कथं न्वहम् ॥१४-९३-४८॥
ṣaṣṭhe kāle vratavatīṃ śīlaśaucasamanvitām। kṛcchravṛttiṃ nirāhārāṃ drakṣyāmi tvāṃ kathaṃ nvaham॥14-93-48॥
[षष्ठे (ṣaṣṭhe) - on the sixth; (time or day); काले (kāle) - at the time; व्रतवतीम् (vratavatīm) - the one observing a vow; शीलशौचसमन्विताम् (śīlaśaucasamanvitām) - endowed with character and purity; (śīla: character; śauca: purity; samanvitām: endowed with); कृच्छ्रवृत्तिम् (kṛcchravṛttim) - practicing austerities; निराहाराम् (nirāhārām) - without food; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - shall I see; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; कथम् (katham) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(On the sixth day, at the time, the one observing a vow, endowed with character and purity, practicing austerities, without food, shall I see you, how indeed I?)
How shall I, on the sixth day, see you, who are observing a vow, endowed with character and purity, practicing austerities, and without food? (14-93-48)
बाला क्षुधार्ता नारी च रक्ष्या त्वं सततं मया। उपवासपरिश्रान्ता त्वं हि बान्धवनन्दिनी ॥१४-९३-४९॥
bālā kṣudhārtā nārī ca rakṣyā tvaṁ satataṁ mayā। upavāsapariśrāntā tvaṁ hi bāndhavanandinī ॥14-93-49॥
[बाला (bālā) - young girl; क्षुधार्ता (kṣudhārtā) - afflicted with hunger; नारी (nārī) - woman; च (ca) - and; रक्ष्या (rakṣyā) - to be protected; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; सततं (satataṁ) - always; मया (mayā) - by me; उपवासपरिश्रान्ता (upavāsapariśrāntā) - wearied by fasting; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; बान्धवनन्दिनी (bāndhavanandinī) - delighter of relatives;]
(Young girl, afflicted with hunger, woman and to be protected you always by me. Wearied by fasting, you indeed delighter of relatives.)
You, a young woman afflicted by hunger, are to be always protected by me. Being weary due to fasting, you are indeed the delight of your relatives. (14-93-49)
स्नुषोवाच॥

गुरोर्मम गुरुस्त्वं वै यतो दैवतदैवतम्। देवातिदेवस्तस्मात्त्वं सक्तूनादत्स्व मे विभो ॥१४-९३-५०॥
gurormama gurustvaṃ vai yato daivatadaivatam। devātidevastasmāttvaṃ saktūnādatsva me vibho ॥14-93-50॥
[गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; मम (mama) - my; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वै (vai) - indeed; यतः (yataḥ) - because; दैवतदैवतम् (daivatadaivatam) - the god of gods; देवातिदेवः (devātidevaḥ) - the superior to the gods; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grain; आदत्स्व (ādatsva) - accept; मे (me) - of me; विभो (vibho) - O supreme one;]
(Of teacher my teacher you indeed because the god of gods, the superior to the gods, therefore you parched grain accept of me O supreme one.)
You are indeed my teacher's teacher, because you are the god of gods. Therefore, O supreme one, please accept the parched grain from me. (14-93-50)
देहः प्राणश्च धर्मश्च शुश्रूषार्थमिदं गुरोः। तव विप्र प्रसादेन लोकान्प्राप्स्याम्यभीप्सितान् ॥१४-९३-५१॥
dehaḥ prāṇaś ca dharmaś ca śuśrūṣārtham idaṃ guroḥ। tava vipra prasādena lokān prāpsyāmy abhīpsitān ॥14-93-51॥
[देहः (dehaḥ) - body; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life-breath; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; शुश्रूषा-अर्थम् (śuśrūṣā-artham) - for the purpose of service; इदं (idaṃ) - this; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; तव (tava) - your; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by favor; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; प्राप्स्यामि (prāpsyāmi) - I shall attain; अभीप्सितान् (abhīpsitān) - desired;]
(Body, life-breath and righteousness, and this (all) for the purpose of service of the teacher; by your favor, O brāhmaṇa, I shall attain the desired worlds.)
My body, life, and righteousness—indeed, all this exists for serving my teacher. By your favor, O brāhmaṇa, I shall attain the worlds I desire. (14-93-51)
अवेक्ष्या इति कृत्वा त्वं दृढभक्त्येति वा द्विज। चिन्त्या ममेयमिति वा सक्तूनादातुमर्हसि ॥१४-९३-५२॥
avekṣyā iti kṛtvā tvaṁ dṛḍhabhaktyeti vā dvija. cintyā mameyamiti vā saktūnādātumarhasi ॥14-93-52॥
[अवेक्ष्या (avekṣyā) - having considered; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; दृढभक्त्येति (dṛḍhabhaktyeti) - 'with firm devotion' thus; वा (vā) - or; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; चिन्त्या (cintyā) - having thought; ममेयमिति (mameyamiti) - 'this is mine' thus; वा (vā) - or; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grains; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to give; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(Having considered thus or having done thus, you, O twice-born, or having thought 'with firm devotion' or 'this is mine,' you should give parched grains.)
O twice-born, whether you have reflected in this manner, or have determined with firm devotion, or have thought 'this is mine,' you should give the parched grains. (14-93-52)
श्वशुर उवाच॥

अनेन नित्यं साध्वी त्वं शीलवृत्तेन शोभसे। या त्वं धर्मव्रतोपेता गुरुवृत्तिमवेक्षसे ॥१४-९३-५३॥
anena nityaṃ sādhvī tvaṃ śīlavṛttena śobhase। yā tvaṃ dharmavratopetā guruvṛttimavekṣase॥14-93-53॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous woman; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शीलवृत्तेन (śīlavṛttena) - by conduct and character; शोभसे (śobhase) - you shine; या (yā) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; धर्मव्रतोपेता (dharmavratopetā) - endowed with vow of dharma; गुरुवृत्तिम् (guruvṛttim) - the behavior towards elders; अवेक्षसे (avekṣase) - you observe;]
(By this, always, O virtuous woman, you shine by conduct and character; you, who are endowed with the vow of dharma, you observe the behavior towards elders.)
Because of this, O virtuous woman, you always shine through your conduct and character; you, who are devoted to dharma, carefully attend to the duties towards elders. (14-93-53)
तस्मात्सक्तून्ग्रहीष्यामि वधूर्नार्हसि वञ्चनाम्। गणयित्वा महाभागे त्वं हि धर्मभृतां वरा ॥१४-९३-५४॥
tasmātsaktūn grahīṣyāmi vadhūr nārhasi vañcanām। gaṇayitvā mahābhāge tvaṃ hi dharmabhṛtāṃ varā ॥14-93-54॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grains; ग्रहīष्यामि (grahīṣyāmi) - I will take; वधूः (vadhūḥ) - O bride; न (na) - not; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; वञ्चनाम् (vañcanām) - deception; गणयित्वा (gaṇayitvā) - having counted; महाभागे (mahābhāge) - O highly fortunate one; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वरा (varā) - the best (feminine);]
(Therefore parched grains I will take, O bride, you should not (do) deception. Having counted, O highly fortunate one, you indeed are the best among the upholders of dharma.)
Therefore, I will take the parched grains; O bride, you should not act deceitfully. Having counted, O highly fortunate one, you are indeed the best among those who uphold dharma. (14-93-54)
इत्युक्त्वा तानुपादाय सक्तून्प्रादाद्द्विजातये। ततस्तुष्टोऽभवद्विप्रस्तस्य साधोर्महात्मनः ॥१४-९३-५५॥
ity uktvā tān upādāya saktūn prādād dvijātaye. tataḥ tuṣṭaḥ abhavat vipraḥ tasya sādhoḥ mahātmanaḥ ॥14-93-55॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तान् (tān) - them; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; सक्तून् (saktūn) - parched grains; प्रादात् (prādāt) - he gave; द्विजातये (dvijātaye) - to the twice-born; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - satisfied; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; तस्य (tasya) - of him; साधोः (sādhoḥ) - of the sage; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Thus having spoken, having taken them, the parched grains, he gave to the twice-born; then satisfied became the Brāhmaṇa, of him, the sage, the great-souled one.)
Having spoken thus and taking those parched grains, he gave them to the Brāhmaṇa; then the Brāhmaṇa became satisfied with that great-souled sage. (14-93-55)
प्रीतात्मा स तु तं वाक्यमिदमाह द्विजर्षभम्। वाग्मी तदा द्विजश्रेष्ठो धर्मः पुरुषविग्रहः ॥१४-९३-५६॥
prītātmā sa tu taṃ vākyam idam āha dvijarṣabham। vāgmī tadā dvijaśreṣṭho dharmaḥ puruṣavigrahaḥ ॥14-93-56॥
[प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with delighted heart; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तं (tam) - him; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; इदम् (idam) - this; आह (āha) - spoke; द्विजर्षभम् (dvijarṣabham) - to the best of twice-born; वाग्मी (vāgmī) - eloquent; तदा (tadā) - then; द्विजश्रेष्ठः (dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of brahmins; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; पुरुषविग्रहः (puruṣavigrahaḥ) - having the form of a man;]
(With delighted heart, he, but, to him, this speech spoke, to the best of twice-born; eloquent, then, the best of brahmins, Dharma, having the form of a man.)
With a delighted heart, he himself then addressed these words to the foremost of twice-born; the eloquent and noble brahmin, Dharma incarnate in human form. (14-93-56)
शुद्धेन तव दानेन न्यायोपात्तेन यत्नतः। यथाशक्ति विमुक्तेन प्रीतोऽस्मि द्विजसत्तम ॥१४-९३-५७॥

(By pure, your gift, righteously-obtained, carefully, according to ability, freely-given, I am pleased, O best of twice-born.)
O best of the twice-born, I am pleased by your pure, carefully righteously-obtained gift, freely-given according to your ability. (14-93-57)
अहो दानं घुष्यते ते स्वर्गे स्वर्गनिवासिभिः। गगनात्पुष्पवर्षं च पश्यस्व पतितं भुवि ॥१४-९३-५८॥
aho dānaṃ ghuṣyate te svarge svarganivāsibhiḥ। gaganāt puṣpavarṣaṃ ca paśyasva patitaṃ bhuvi ॥14-93-58॥
[अहो (aho) - oh; (expression of wonder); दानं (dānam) - gift; donation; घुष्यते (ghuṣyate) - is proclaimed; is praised aloud; ते (te) - your; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; स्वर्गनिवासिभिः (svarganivāsibhiḥ) - by the inhabitants of heaven; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; पुष्पवर्षं (puṣpavarṣam) - a shower of flowers; च (ca) - and; पश्यस्व (paśyasva) - see; behold; पतितं (patitam) - having fallen; fallen; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Oh, your gift is proclaimed in heaven by the inhabitants of heaven. And see the shower of flowers fallen from the sky onto the earth. (14-93-58))
Oh! Your gift is being praised in heaven by the heavenly dwellers. Behold also the shower of flowers fallen from the sky onto the earth. (14-93-58)
सुरर्षिदेवगन्धर्वा ये च देवपुरःसराः। स्तुवन्तो देवदूताश्च स्थिता दानेन विस्मिताः ॥१४-९३-५९॥
suraṛṣidevagandharvā ye ca devapuraḥsarāḥ। stuvanto devadūtāśca sthitā dānena vismitāḥ ॥14-93-59॥
[सुरर्षिदेवगन्धर्वाः (suraṛṣidevagandharvāḥ) - the gods, sages, and gandharvas; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; देवपुरःसराः (devapuraḥsarāḥ) - those led by the gods; स्तुवन्तः (stuvantaḥ) - praising; देवदूताः (devadūtāḥ) - divine messengers; च (ca) - and; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; दानेन (dānena) - by (his) gift; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished;]
(The gods, sages, and gandharvas, who, and those led by the gods, praising, and the divine messengers, standing, by (his) gift, astonished.)
The gods, sages, gandharvas, and all those led by the gods, along with the divine messengers, stood astonished at his gift, offering praise. (14-93-59)
ब्रह्मर्षयो विमानस्था ब्रह्मलोकगताश्च ये। काङ्क्षन्ते दर्शनं तुभ्यं दिवं गच्छ द्विजर्षभ ॥१४-९३-६०॥
brahmarṣayo vimānasthā brahmalokagatāś ca ye। kāṅkṣante darśanaṃ tubhyaṃ divaṃ gaccha dvijarṣabha ॥14-93-60॥
[ब्रह्मर्षयः (brahmarṣayaḥ) - brahma-ṛṣis; sages belonging to the class of brahma-ṛṣis; विमानस्था (vimānasthāḥ) - situated in aerial vehicles; ब्रह्मलोकगताः (brahmalokagatāḥ) - having gone to the world of Brahman; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - those who; काङ्क्षन्ते (kāṅkṣante) - desire; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - view; sight; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - for you; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best among twice-born;]
(The brahma-ṛṣis situated in aerial vehicles, those who have gone to Brahma's world, desire to see you. Go to heaven, O best among twice-born.)
The brahma-ṛṣis in their celestial vehicles and those who have attained Brahma's world all wish to see you. Go to heaven, O best among the twice-born. (14-93-60)
पितृलोकगताः सर्वे तारिताः पितरस्त्वया। अनागताश्च बहवः सुबहूनि युगानि च ॥१४-९३-६१॥
pitṛlokagatāḥ sarve tāritāḥ pitarastvayā. anāgatāśca bahavaḥ subahūni yugāni ca ॥14-93-61॥
[पितृलोकगताः (pitṛlokagatāḥ) - who have gone to the world of the ancestors; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तारिताः (tāritāḥ) - have been crossed over; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - fathers; ancestors; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनागताः (anāgatāḥ) - not yet arrived; those not yet come; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; सुबहूनि (subahūni) - very many; युगानि (yugāni) - ages; च (ca) - and;]
(All ancestors who have gone to the world of the ancestors have been crossed over by you; and many not yet arrived, very many ages and also.)
All the ancestors who have gone to the world of the ancestors have been saved by you; and many yet to come, in countless future ages as well. (14-93-61)
ब्रह्मचर्येण यज्ञेन दानेन तपसा तथा। अगह्वरेण धर्मेण तस्माद्गच्छ दिवं द्विज ॥१४-९३-६२॥
brahmacaryeṇa yajñena dānena tapasā tathā। aghavareṇa dharmeṇa tasmādgaccha divaṃ dvija ॥14-93-62॥

(By celibacy, by sacrifice, by giving, by austerity thus, by absence of deceit, by righteousness, therefore go to heaven, O twice-born.)
O twice-born, therefore, by celibacy, sacrifice, charity, austerity, absence of deceit, and righteousness, go to heaven. (14-93-62)
श्रद्धया परया यस्त्वं तपश्चरसि सुव्रत। तस्माद्देवास्तवानेन प्रीता द्विजवरोत्तम ॥१४-९३-६३॥
śraddhayā parayā yas tvaṃ tapaś carasī suvrata। tasmād devās tavānena prītā dvijavarottama ॥14-93-63॥

(With supreme faith who you austerity practise, O one of good vows, therefore gods of you by this pleased, O best among twice-born.)
O best among the twice-born, because you practise austerity with supreme faith, O virtuous one, the gods are pleased with you by this. (14-93-63)
सर्वस्वमेतद्यस्मात्ते त्यक्तं शुद्धेन चेतसा। कृच्छ्रकाले ततः स्वर्गो जितोऽयं तव कर्मणा ॥१४-९३-६४॥
sarvasvam etad yasmāt te tyaktaṃ śuddhena cetasā। kṛcchra-kāle tataḥ svargaḥ jitaḥ ayaṃ tava karmaṇā ॥14-93-64॥
[सर्वस्वम् (sarvasvam) - entire wealth; all property; एतत् (etat) - this; यसमात् (yasmāt) - because; ते (te) - by you; त्यक्तम् (tyaktam) - abandoned; शुद्धेन (śuddhena) - by pure; चेतसा (cetasā) - mind; कृच्छ्रकाले (kṛcchra-kāle) - in a time of hardship; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; जितः (jitaḥ) - conquered; अयम् (ayam) - this; तव (tava) - by your; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
(All wealth, this, because by you abandoned with pure mind; in a time of hardship, then heaven conquered, this by your action.)
Because you have abandoned all this wealth with a pure mind in a time of hardship, therefore heaven has been conquered by your action. (14-93-64)
क्षुधा निर्णुदति प्रज्ञां धर्म्यां बुद्धिं व्यपोहति। क्षुधापरिगतज्ञानो धृतिं त्यजति चैव ह ॥१४-९३-६५॥
kṣudhā nirṇudati prajñāṃ dharmyāṃ buddhiṃ vyapohati. kṣudhāparigatajñāno dhṛtiṃ tyajati caiva ha ॥14-93-65॥
[क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - by hunger; निर्णुदति (nirṇudati) - afflicts; प्रज्ञाम् (prajñām) - wisdom; धर्म्यां (dharmyām) - righteous; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - understanding; व्यपोहति (vyapohati) - removes; क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - by hunger; अपिगत (aparigata) - overcome; ज्ञानः (jñānaḥ) - one whose knowledge; धृतिं (dhṛtiṃ) - resolve; त्यजति (tyajati) - abandons; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(By hunger afflicts wisdom; righteous understanding removes. By hunger overcome one whose knowledge resolve abandons and indeed certainly.)
Hunger afflicts wisdom and removes righteous understanding. A person whose knowledge is overcome by hunger certainly abandons resolve. (14-93-65)
बुभुक्षां जयते यस्तु स स्वर्गं जयते ध्रुवम्। यदा दानरुचिर्भवति तदा धर्मो न सीदति ॥१४-९३-६६॥
bubhukṣāṃ jayate yastu sa svargaṃ jayate dhruvam। yadā dānarucirbhavati tadā dharmo na sīdati ॥14-93-66॥
[बुभुक्षां (bubhukṣām) - desire for food; जयते (jayate) - conquers; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; स (sa) - he; स्वर्गं (svargam) - heaven; जयते (jayate) - conquers; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; यदा (yadā) - when; दानरुचिः (dānaruciḥ) - desire for giving; भवति (bhavati) - arises; तदा (tadā) - then; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; न (na) - not; सीदति (sīdati) - declines;]
(He who conquers desire for food, he certainly conquers heaven. When desire for giving arises, then righteousness does not decline.)
The one who overcomes hunger truly attains heaven; when the wish to give arises, then righteousness does not falter. (14-93-66)
अनवेक्ष्य सुतस्नेहं कलत्रस्नेहमेव च। धर्ममेव गुरुं ज्ञात्वा तृष्णा न गणिता त्वया ॥१४-९३-६७॥
anavekṣya sutasnehaṃ kalatrasneham-eva ca। dharmam-eva guruṃ jñātvā tṛṣṇā na gaṇitā tvayā॥14-93-67॥
[अनवेक्ष्य (anavekṣya) - without considering; सुतस्नेहं (sutasneham) - affection for son; कलत्रस्नेहम् (kalatrasneham) - affection for wife; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; एव (eva) - alone; गुरुं (guruṃ) - as important; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having understood; तृष्णा (tṛṣṇā) - desire; न (na) - not; गणिता (gaṇitā) - considered; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Without considering affection for son and wife indeed, knowing righteousness alone as the highest, desire has not been considered by you.)
You disregarded affection for your son and wife, and, recognizing righteousness as the highest value, you did not give any place to desire. (14-93-67)
द्रव्यागमो नृणां सूक्ष्मः पात्रे दानं ततः परम्। कालः परतरो दानाच्छ्रद्धा चापि ततः परा ॥१४-९३-६८॥
dravyāgamo nṛṇāṃ sūkṣmaḥ pātre dānaṃ tataḥ param | kālaḥ parataro dānācchraddhā cāpi tataḥ parā ॥14-93-68॥
[द्रव्यागमः (dravyāgamaḥ) - acquisition of wealth; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; सूक्ष्मः (sūkṣmaḥ) - subtle; पात्रे (pātre) - to a worthy recipient; दानम् (dānam) - gift; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; परम् (param) - greater; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; परतरः (parataraḥ) - still greater; दानात् (dānāt) - than (the) gift; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - faith; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; परा (parā) - supreme;]
(Acquisition of wealth of men is subtle; gift to a worthy recipient is greater than that. Time is still greater than the gift; and faith also is supreme than that.)
The acquisition of wealth by men is subtle; giving to a worthy recipient is greater than that. Time is even greater than such giving, but faith is supreme above all. (14-93-68)
स्वर्गद्वारं सुसूक्ष्मं हि नरैर्मोहान्न दृश्यते। स्वर्गार्गलं लोभबीजं रागगुप्तं दुरासदम् ॥१४-९३-६९॥
svargadvāraṃ susūkṣmaṃ hi narairmohānna dṛśyate। svargārgalaṃ lobhabījaṃ rāgaguptaṃ durāsadam ॥14-93-69॥
[स्वर्गद्वारं (svargadvāraṃ) - heaven-gate; सुसूक्ष्मं (susūkṣmaṃ) - very subtle; हि (hi) - indeed; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men; मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; न (na) - not; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; स्वर्गार्गलं (svargārgalaṃ) - heaven's bolt; लोभबीजं (lobhabījaṃ) - greed-seed; रागगुप्तं (rāgaguptaṃ) - passion-concealed; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - hard to reach;]
(Heaven-gate, very subtle, indeed by men from delusion is not seen. Heaven's bolt, greed-seed, passion-concealed, hard to approach.)
The gate of heaven, being very subtle, is indeed not seen by men due to delusion. The bolt of heaven, whose seed is greed and which is concealed by passion, is difficult to overcome. (14-93-69)
तत्तु पश्यन्ति पुरुषा जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः। ब्राह्मणास्तपसा युक्ता यथाशक्तिप्रदायिनः ॥१४-९३-७०॥
tattu paśyanti puruṣā jitakrodhā jitendriyāḥ। brāhmaṇāstapasā yuktā yathāśaktipradāyinaḥ॥14-93-70॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; जितक्रोधाः (jitakrodhāḥ) - who have conquered anger; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - who have mastered the senses; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brahmins; तपसा (tapasā) - with austerity; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - endowed; यथाशक्तिप्रदायिनः (yathāśaktipradāyinaḥ) - givers according to ability;]
(But that men see, who have conquered anger, who have mastered the senses, Brahmins endowed with austerity, givers according to ability.)
But that is seen by men who have conquered anger and their senses, Brahmins endowed with austerity, who give according to their ability. (14-93-70)
सहस्रशक्तिश्च शतं शतशक्तिर्दशापि च। दद्यादपश्च यः शक्त्या सर्वे तुल्यफलाः स्मृताः ॥१४-९३-७१॥
sahasraśaktiś ca śataṃ śataśaktir daśāpi ca। dadyād apaś ca yaḥ śaktyā sarve tulyaphalāḥ smṛtāḥ ॥14-93-71॥
[सहस्रशक्तिः (sahasraśaktiḥ) - with a thousandfold power; च (ca) - and; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; शतशक्तिः (śataśaktiḥ) - with a hundredfold power; दशा (daśā) - ten; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; अपः (apaḥ) - water; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - according to ability; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तुल्यफलाः (tulyaphalāḥ) - equal-fruit; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are considered;]
(With a thousandfold power and a hundred, with a hundredfold power, ten also and, should give water and who according to ability, all are considered equal-fruit.)
He who gives water according to his ability—whether with a thousandfold, a hundredfold, a tenfold power, or less—all are considered to receive equal fruit. (14-93-71)
रन्तिदेवो हि नृपतिरपः प्रादादकिञ्चनः। शुद्धेन मनसा विप्र नाकपृष्ठं ततो गतः ॥१४-९३-७२॥
rantidevo hi nṛpatir apaḥ prādād akiñcanaḥ। śuddhena manasā vipra nākapṛṣṭhaṃ tato gataḥ॥14-93-72॥
[रन्तिदेवः (rantidevaḥ) - Rantideva; (proper noun, a king's name); हि (hi) - indeed; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; अपः (apaḥ) - water; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; अकिञ्चनः (akiñcanaḥ) - possessing nothing; destitute; शुद्धेन (śuddhena) - with pure; (instrumental singular of śuddha); मनसा (manasā) - mind; (instrumental singular of manas); विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; (vocative singular); नाकपृष्ठम् (nākapṛṣṭham) - heaven; (literally 'the back/top of the sky'); ततः (tataḥ) - from there; thereafter; गतः (gataḥ) - went; reached;]
(Rantideva indeed the king water gave possessing nothing; with pure mind O brāhmaṇa heaven from there went.)
O brāhmaṇa, Rantideva, though a king possessing nothing, indeed gave water and, with a pure mind, thereafter went to heaven. (14-93-72)
न धर्मः प्रीयते तात दानैर्दत्तैर्महाफलैः। न्यायलब्धैर्यथा सूक्ष्मैः श्रद्धापूतैः स तुष्यति ॥१४-९३-७३॥
na dharmaḥ prīyate tāta dānaiḥ dattaiḥ mahāphalaiḥ। nyāya-labdhaiḥ yathā sūkṣmaiḥ śraddhā-pūtaiḥ sa tuṣyati॥14-93-73॥
[न (na) - not; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; प्रीयते (prīyate) - is pleased; तात (tāta) - dear one; दानैः (dānaiḥ) - by gifts; दत्तैः (dattaiḥ) - that are given; महाफलैः (mahāphalaiḥ) - of great fruit; न्यायलब्धैः (nyāya-labdhaiḥ) - acquired by justice; यथा (yathā) - as; सूक्ष्मैः (sūkṣmaiḥ) - subtle; श्रद्धापूतैः (śraddhā-pūtaiḥ) - purified by faith; सः (saḥ) - he; तुष्यति (tuṣyati) - is satisfied;]
(Not dharma is pleased, dear one, by gifts given of great fruit, as by those acquired by justice, subtle, purified by faith; he is satisfied.)
O dear one, dharma is not pleased by gifts of great results that are given, but he is satisfied by even small ones acquired justly and purified by faith. (14-93-73)
गोप्रदानसहस्राणि द्विजेभ्योऽदान्नृगो नृपः। एकां दत्त्वा स पारक्यां नरकं समवाप्तवान् ॥१४-९३-७४॥
gopradāna-sahasrāṇi dvijebhyo'dān nṛgo nṛpaḥ। ekāṃ dattvā sa pārakyāṃ narakaṃ samavāptavān॥14-93-74॥
[गोप्रदानसहस्राणि (gopradāna-sahasrāṇi) - a thousand gifts of cows; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to Brāhmaṇas; अदात् (adāt) - gave; नृगः (nṛgaḥ) - Nṛga (proper noun, king’s name); नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; एकाम् (ekām) - one; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; सः (saḥ) - he; पारक्याम् (pārakyām) - belonging to another; नरकम् (narakam) - hell; समवाप्तवान् (samavāptavān) - attained;]
(A thousand gifts of cows to Brāhmaṇas Nṛga the king gave. Having given one belonging to another, he hell attained.)
King Nṛga gave a thousand cows to Brāhmaṇas, but by giving even one that belonged to another, he attained hell. (14-93-74)
आत्ममांसप्रदानेन शिबिरौशीनरो नृपः। प्राप्य पुण्यकृताँल्लोकान्मोदते दिवि सुव्रतः ॥१४-९३-७५॥
ātma-māṁsa-pradānena śibi-rauśīnaraḥ nṛpaḥ। prāpya puṇya-kṛtāṁl lokān modate divi suvrataḥ॥14-93-75॥
[आत्ममांसप्रदानेन (ātma-māṁsa-pradānena) - by giving (his own) flesh; by offering (his own) flesh; शिबि औशीनरः (śibi auśīnaraḥ) - Śibi (the) descendant of Uśīnara; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇya-kṛtām) - of those who have performed meritorious acts; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; मोदते (modate) - rejoices; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; सुव्रतः (suvrataḥ) - of good vows;]
(By offering his own flesh, Śibi, the descendant of Uśīnara, the king, having attained the worlds of the meritorious, rejoices in heaven, (he who is) of good vows.)
By offering his own flesh, King Śibi of the Uśīnara lineage attained the worlds of the righteous and rejoices in heaven, steadfast in his good vows. (14-93-75)
विभवे न नृणां पुण्यं स्वशक्त्या स्वर्जितं सताम्। न यज्ञैर्विविधैर्विप्र यथान्यायेन सञ्चितैः ॥१४-९३-७६॥
vibhave na nṛṇāṃ puṇyaṃ svaśaktyā svarjitaṃ satām। na yajñairvividhairvipra yathānyāyena sañcitaiḥ॥14-93-76॥
[विभवे (vibhave) - in wealth; न (na) - not; नृणां (nṛṇāṃ) - of men; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - merit; स्वशक्त्या (svaśaktyā) - by one's own power; स्वर्जितं (svarjitaṃ) - self-acquired; सताम् (satām) - of the good; न (na) - not; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्यायेन (anyāyena) - by unjust means; सञ्चितैः (sañcitaiḥ) - accumulated;]
(In wealth not of men merit by one's own power self-acquired of the good; not by sacrifices various O brāhmaṇa as by unjust means accumulated.)
O brāhmaṇa, in wealth, the merit of men does not lie in what is self-acquired by their own power, O good one; it does not arise from various sacrifices that are accumulated by unjust means. (14-93-76)
क्रोधो दानफलं हन्ति लोभात्स्वर्गं न गच्छति। न्यायवृत्तिर्हि तपसा दानवित्स्वर्गमश्नुते ॥१४-९३-७७॥
krodho dānaphalaṃ hanti lobhātsvargaṃ na gacchati। nyāyavṛttir hi tapasā dānavit svargam aśnute ॥14-93-77॥
[क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; दानफलं (dāna-phalam) - the fruit of giving; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; लोभात् (lobhāt) - due to greed; स्वर्गं (svargam) - heaven; न (na) - not; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; न्यायवृत्तिः (nyāyavṛttiḥ) - one of righteous conduct; हि (hi) - indeed; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; दानवित् (dānavit) - one who possesses charity; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(Anger destroys the fruit of giving; due to greed, one does not go to heaven. Indeed, one of righteous conduct, by austerity and being possessed of charity, attains heaven.)
Anger destroys the reward of charity, and due to greed, one does not reach heaven. But a person who lives righteously, practices austerity, and is charitable truly attains heaven. (14-93-77)
न राजसूयैर्बहुभिरिष्ट्वा विपुलदक्षिणैः। न चाश्वमेधैर्बहुभिः फलं सममिदं तव ॥१४-९३-७८॥
na rājasūyair bahubhir iṣṭvā vipula-dakṣiṇaiḥ। na ca aśvamedhair bahubhiḥ phalaṃ samam idaṃ tava॥14-93-78॥
[न (na) - not; राजसूयैः (rājasūyaiḥ) - with rājasūya-sacrifices; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having sacrificed; विपुलदक्षिणैः (vipula-dakṣiṇaiḥ) - with abundant gifts (to priests); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अश्वमेधैः (aśvamedhaiḥ) - with aśvamedha-sacrifices; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; फलम् (phalaṃ) - fruit; समम् (samam) - equal; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; तव (tava) - of yours;]
(Not with rājasūya-sacrifices, many, having sacrificed, with abundant gifts (to priests); nor and with aśvamedha-sacrifices, many, (is) the fruit equal to this of yours.)
Not by performing many rājasūya-sacrifices with abundant gifts, nor even by many aśvamedha-sacrifices, is the fruit equal to this of yours. (14-93-78)
सक्तुप्रस्थेन हि जितो ब्रह्मलोकस्त्वयानघ। विरजो ब्रह्मभवनं गच्छ विप्र यथेच्छकम् ॥१४-९३-७९॥
saktuprasthena hi jito brahmalokastvayānagha। virajo brahmabhavanaṃ gaccha vipra yathecchakam ॥14-93-79॥
[सक्तुप्रस्थेन (saktuprasthena) - by a prastha (measure) of parched grain; हि (hi) - indeed; जितः (jitaḥ) - has been conquered; ब्रह्मलोकः (brahmalokaḥ) - the world of Brahma; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; विरजः (virajaḥ) - free from passion; ब्रह्मभवनम् (brahmabhavanam) - the abode of Brahma; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; यथेच्छकम् (yathecchakam) - as you desire;]
(By a prastha of parched grain, indeed, has been conquered Brahmaloka by you, O sinless one. Free from passion, go to the abode of Brahma, O brāhmaṇa, as you desire.)
By offering a prastha of parched grain, O sinless brāhmaṇa, you have truly conquered Brahmaloka. Free from all passion, go to Brahma's abode as you wish. (14-93-79)
सर्वेषां वो द्विजश्रेष्ठ दिव्यं यानमुपस्थितम्। आरोहत यथाकामं धर्मोऽस्मि द्विज पश्य माम् ॥१४-९३-८०॥

(Of all for you, O best of Brāhmaṇas, a divine vehicle has arrived. Ascend as desired. I am Dharma, O Brāhmaṇa, see me.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, a divine vehicle has arrived for all of you. Ascend as you desire. I am Dharma—O Brāhmaṇa, behold me. (14-93-80)
पावितो हि त्वया देहो लोके कीर्तिः स्थिरा च ते। सभार्यः सहपुत्रश्च सस्नुषश्च दिवं व्रज ॥१४-९३-८१॥
pāvito hi tvayā deho loke kīrtiḥ sthirā ca te. sabhāryaḥ sahaputraś ca sasnuṣaś ca divaṃ vraja ॥14-93-81॥

(Purified indeed by you, the body; in the world, fame steady and your; with wife, with son, and with daughter-in-law, and to heaven go.)
Indeed, your body has been purified by you; your fame remains steady in the world. Go to heaven with your wife, your son, and your daughter-in-law. (14-93-81)
इत्युक्तवाक्यो धर्मेण यानमारुह्य स द्विजः। सभार्यः ससुतश्चापि सस्नुषश्च दिवं ययौ ॥१४-९३-८२॥
ity-uktavākyo dharmeṇa yānam āruhy sa dvijaḥ। sabhāryaḥ sasutaś cāpi sasnuṣaś ca divaṃ yayau ॥14-93-82॥

(Thus, having spoken words, with righteousness, having mounted the vehicle, he the twice-born with wife, with son also, and with daughters-in-law, to heaven he went.)
Having thus spoken, the twice-born, with righteousness, mounted the vehicle, and together with his wife, son, and daughters-in-law, went to heaven. (14-93-82)
तस्मिन्विप्रे गते स्वर्गं ससुते सस्नुषे तदा। भार्याचतुर्थे धर्मज्ञे ततोऽहं निःसृतो बिलात् ॥१४-९३-८३॥
tasmin vipre gate svargaṃ sasute sasnuṣe tadā। bhāryācaturthe dharmajñe tato'haṃ niḥsṛto bilāt ॥14-93-83॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; विप्रे (vipre) - brāhmaṇa; गते (gate) - having gone; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - to heaven; ससुते (sasute) - with (his) son; सस्नुषे (sasnuṣe) - with (his) daughter-in-law; तदा (tadā) - then; भार्या-चतुर्थे (bhāryācaturthe) - with the wife as the fourth (person); धर्मज्ञे (dharmajñe) - knower of dharma; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अहम् (aham) - I; निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) - emerged; बिलात् (bilāt) - from the hole;]
(In that brāhmaṇa, having gone to heaven with his son and with his daughter-in-law, then, with the wife as the fourth (person), a knower of dharma—thereafter, I emerged from the hole.)
When that brāhmaṇa went to heaven along with his son and daughter-in-law, and then, with the wife as the fourth person and a knower of dharma, I then emerged from the hole. (14-93-83)
ततस्तु सक्तुगन्धेन क्लेदेन सलिलस्य च। दिव्यपुष्पावमर्दाच्च साधोर्दानलवैश्च तैः ॥ विप्रस्य तपसा तस्य शिरो मे काञ्चनीकृतम् ॥१४-९३-८४॥
tatastu saktugandhena kledena salilasya ca. divyapuṣpāvamardācca sādhordanalavaiśca taiḥ । viprasya tapasā tasya śiro me kāñcanīkṛtam ॥14-93-84॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; सक्तुगन्धेन (saktugandhena) - by the smell of flour; क्लेदेन (kledena) - by the moisture; सलिलस्य (salilasya) - of water; च (ca) - and; दिव्यपुष्पावमर्दात् (divyapuṣpāvamardāt) - by the pressing of divine flowers; च (ca) - and; साधोः (sādhoḥ) - of the sage; दानलवैः (danalavaiḥ) - by the remnants of food offerings; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by these; विप्रस्य (viprasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; तपसा (tapasā) - by the austerity; तस्य (tasya) - his; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; मे (me) - my; काञ्चनीकृतम् (kāñcanīkṛtam) - was made golden;]
(Then but by the smell of flour, by the moisture of water, and by the pressing of divine flowers, and by the remnants of food offerings of the sage, by these, by the austerity of the brāhmaṇa, his head my was made golden.)
But then, because of the smell of the flour, the moisture of water, the pressing of divine flowers, and by the remnants of food offerings from the sage, by all these, and by the brāhmaṇa's austerity, my head was turned to gold. (14-93-84)
तस्य सत्याभिसन्धस्य सूक्ष्मदानेन चैव ह। शरीरार्धं च मे विप्राः शातकुम्भमयं कृतम् ॥ पश्यतेदं सुविपुलं तपसा तस्य धीमतः ॥१४-९३-८५॥
tasya satyābhisandhasya sūkṣmadānena caiva ha। śarīrārdhaṃ ca me viprāḥ śātakumbhamayaṃ kṛtam॥ paśyatedaṃ suvipulaṃ tapasā tasya dhīmataḥ॥14-93-85॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; सत्याभिसन्धस्य (satyābhisandhasya) - of the one devoted to truth; सूक्ष्मदानेन (sūkṣmadānena) - by a subtle (small) gift; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - indeed; शरीरार्धं (śarīrārdham) - half (ardha) of (his) body; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - O brāhmaṇas; शातकुम्भमयम् (śātakumbhamayam) - made of gold; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been made; पश्यत (paśyata) - see; इदम् (idam) - this; सुविपुलम् (suvipulam) - very broad; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise one;]
(Of him, of the one devoted to truth, by a subtle gift, and indeed, half of my body, O brāhmaṇas, has been made of gold. See this very broad (result), by penance of him, the wise one. (14-93-85))
O brāhmaṇas, half of my body has become golden due to the subtle gift of that truth-devoted wise one; see this vast (transformation), accomplished by his penance. (14-93-85)
कथमेवंविधं मे स्यादन्यत्पार्श्वमिति द्विजाः। तपोवनानि यज्ञांश्च हृष्टोऽभ्येमि पुनः पुनः ॥१४-९३-८६॥
kathamevaṁ-vidhaṁ me syād anyat-pārśvam iti dvijāḥ। tapovanāni yajñāṁś ca hṛṣṭo'bhyemi punaḥ punaḥ॥14-93-86॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; एवं-विधम् (evaṁ-vidham) - of such a kind; मे (me) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - may it be; अन्यत्-पार्श्वम् (anyat-pārśvam) - on the other side; इति (iti) - thus; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; तपोवनानि (tapovanāni) - forests of penance; यज्ञान् (yajñān) - sacrifices; च (ca) - and; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - glad; अभ्येमि (abhyemi) - I approach; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(How such a kind may be to me on the other side—thus, O Brāhmaṇas, forests of penance and sacrifices, glad, I approach again and again.)
How can such a condition be mine on the other side? Thus, O Brāhmaṇas, with delight I again and again approach forests of penance and sacrifices. (14-93-86)
यज्ञं त्वहमिमं श्रुत्वा कुरुराजस्य धीमतः। आशया परया प्राप्तो न चाहं काञ्चनीकृतः ॥१४-९३-८७॥
yajñaṃ tv aham imaṃ śrutvā kururājasya dhīmataḥ। āśayā parayā prāpto na cāhaṃ kāñcanīkṛtaḥ॥14-93-87॥
[यज्ञं (yajñaṃ) - sacrifice; त्व (tv) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; इमं (imaṃ) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कुरुराजस्य (kururājasya) - of the king of the Kurus; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; आशया (āśayā) - with hope; परया (parayā) - great; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - come; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; काञ्चनीकृतः (kāñcanīkṛtaḥ) - made gold;]
(Sacrifice indeed I this having heard of the wise king of the Kurus, with great hope come, not and I made gold.)
Indeed, having heard of this sacrifice of the wise king of the Kurus, I came with great hope, but I was not made golden. (14-93-87)
ततो मयोक्तं तद्वाक्यं प्रहस्य द्विजसत्तमाः। सक्तुप्रस्थेन यज्ञोऽयं संमितो नेति सर्वथा ॥१४-९३-८८॥
tato mayoktaṃ tadvākyaṃ prahasya dvijasattamāḥ। saktuprasthena yajño'yaṃ saṃmito neti sarvathā ॥14-93-88॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; मया (mayā) - by me; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; तत्-वाक्यम् (tat-vākyam) - that statement; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having laughed; द्विज-सत्तमाः (dvija-sattamāḥ) - excellent twice-born ones; सक्तु-प्रस्थेन (saktu-prasthena) - by a measure (prastha) of saktu (parched flour); यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; अयम् (ayam) - this; संमितः (saṃmitaḥ) - measured; न (na) - not; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way;]
(Thereupon, by me, that statement spoken, having laughed, the excellent twice-born ones (said): By a prastha of saktu (parched flour) this sacrifice is not at all measured, thus, in every way.)
Thereupon, when I had spoken that statement, the excellent twice-born ones laughed and said: 'This sacrifice cannot at all be measured by just a prastha of saktu.' (14-93-88)
सक्तुप्रस्थलवैस्तैर्हि तदाहं काञ्चनीकृतः। न हि यज्ञो महानेष सदृशस्तैर्मतो मम ॥१४-९३-८९॥
saktuprasthalavaistair hi tadāhaṃ kāñcanīkṛtaḥ। na hi yajño mahāneṣa sadṛśastairmato mama ॥14-93-89॥
[सक्तुप्रस्थलवैः (saktuprasthalavaiḥ) - with measures of parched grain; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; हि (hi) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; काञ्चनीकृतः (kāñcanīkṛtaḥ) - turned into gold; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; महा-न (mahāna) - great; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; तैः (taiḥ) - to those; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded; मम (mama) - by me;]
(With measures of parched grain by those indeed, then I was turned into gold. Not indeed is this great sacrifice regarded equal to those by me.)
By those measures of parched grain, indeed, at that time I was turned into gold. I do not regard this great sacrifice as equal to those.

[इति उक्त्वा (iti uktvā) - thus having spoken; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; द्विजवरान् (dvijavarān) - the excellent twice-born; तदा (tadā) - at that time; जगाम (jagāma) - went; अदर्शनम् (adarśanam) - invisible; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; ययुः (yayuḥ) - departed; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to their homes;]
(Thus having spoken, Nakula to all the excellent twice-born at the sacrifice at that time, went invisible. O king, the Brāhmaṇas, they also departed to their homes.)
Having thus spoken to all the excellent Brāhmaṇas at the sacrifice, Nakula disappeared from sight. O king, the Brāhmaṇas too returned to their homes. (14-93-90)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं मया परपुरञ्जय। यदाश्चर्यमभूत्तस्मिन्वाजिमेधे महाक्रतौ ॥१४-९३-९१॥
etatte sarvam ākhyātaṃ mayā parapurañjaya। yadāścaryam abhūt tasmin vājimedhe mahākratau ॥14-93-91॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; मया (mayā) - by me; परपुरञ्जय (parapurañjaya) - conqueror of enemy cities; यत् (yat) - which; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; अभूत् (abhūt) - occurred; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वाजिमेधे (vājimedhe) - in the horse-sacrifice; महाक्रतौ (mahākratau) - in the great sacrifice;]
(This to you all has been told by me, O conqueror of enemy cities; which wonder occurred in that horse-sacrifice, in the great sacrifice.)
O conqueror of enemy cities, I have told you all of this—what wonder occurred in that horse-sacrifice, in that great ritual. (14-93-91)
न विस्मयस्ते नृपते यज्ञे कार्यः कथञ्चन। ऋषिकोटिसहस्राणि तपोभिर्ये दिवं गताः ॥१४-९३-९२॥
na vismayas te nṛpate yajñe kāryaḥ kathañcana। ṛṣikoṭisahasrāṇi tapobhir ye divaṃ gatāḥ ॥14-93-92॥
[न (na) - not; विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) - amazement; ते (te) - by you; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; यज्ञे (yajñe) - at the sacrifice; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; ऋषिकोटिसहस्राणि (ṛṣikoṭisahasrāṇi) - hundreds of crores of sages; तपोभिः (tapobhiḥ) - by austerities; ये (ye) - who; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(Not amazement by you, O king, at the sacrifice should be done in any way; hundreds of crores of sages, by austerities, who to heaven have gone.)
O king, you should not feel any amazement at the sacrifice; countless crores of sages have reached heaven through their austerities. (14-93-92)
अद्रोहः सर्वभूतेषु सन्तोषः शीलमार्जवम्। तपो दमश्च सत्यं च दानं चेति समं मतम् ॥१४-९३-९३॥

(Absence of hostility towards all beings, contentment, character, honesty, austerity, self-restraint and truth and charity and thus equally regarded.)
Absence of hostility towards all beings, contentment, good character, honesty, austerity, self-restraint, truthfulness, and charity — all these are regarded as equally important. (14-93-93)
