यज्ञे सक्ता नृपतयस्तपःसक्ता महर्षयः। शान्तिव्यवसिता विप्राः शमो दम इति प्रभो ॥१४-९४-१॥
yajñe saktā nṛpatayas tapaḥ-saktā maharṣayaḥ। śānti-vyavasitā viprāḥ śamaḥ dama iti prabho॥14-94-1॥
[यज्ञे (yajñe) - in sacrifice; सक्ता (saktā) - engaged; नृपतयः (nṛpatayaḥ) - kings; तपःसक्ता (tapaḥ-saktā) - engaged in austerity; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; शान्तिव्यवसिता (śānti-vyavasitā) - intent on peace; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; शमः (śamaḥ) - tranquility; दम (dama) - self-control; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(In sacrifice engaged kings, in austerity engaged great sages, intent on peace Brāhmaṇas; tranquility, self-control, thus, O lord.)
O lord, the kings are engaged in sacrifice, the great sages are devoted to austerity, the Brāhmaṇas are intent on peace—which is tranquility and self-control. (14-94-1)
तस्माद्यज्ञफलैस्तुल्यं न किञ्चिदिह विद्यते। इति मे वर्तते बुद्धिस्तथा चैतदसंशयम् ॥१४-९४-२॥
tasmādyajñaphalaistulyaṃ na kiñcidiha vidyate। iti me vartate buddhistathā caitadasaṃśayam ॥14-94-2॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; यज्ञफलैः (yajñaphalaiḥ) - with the fruits of sacrifice; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; इह (iha) - here; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; इति (iti) - "thus"; मे (me) - my; वर्तते (vartate) - remains; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Therefore, with the fruits of sacrifice equal, not anything here is found. "Thus" my understanding remains, thus and this without doubt.)
Therefore, nothing here is found equal to the fruits of sacrifice. "Thus" is my understanding, and this is without doubt. (14-94-2)
यज्ञैरिष्ट्वा हि बहवो राजानो द्विजसत्तम। इह कीर्तिं परां प्राप्य प्रेत्य स्वर्गमितो गताः ॥१४-९४-३॥
yajñair iṣṭvā hi bahavo rājāno dvija-sattama। iha kīrtiṃ parāṃ prāpya pretya svargam ito gatāḥ ॥14-94-3॥
[यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having worshipped (performed); हि (hi) - indeed; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; द्विजसत्तम (dvija-sattama) - O best of twice-born; इह (iha) - here; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; पराम् (parām) - supreme; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after departing; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(By sacrifices having worshipped indeed many kings, O best of twice-born, here supreme fame having obtained, after departing have gone to heaven from here.)
Indeed, O best of twice-born, many kings, having performed sacrifices, attained great fame here and, after death, departed from here to heaven. (14-94-3)
देवराजः सहस्राक्षः क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। देवराज्यं महातेजाः प्राप्तवानखिलं विभुः ॥१४-९४-४॥
devarājaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ kratubhir bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ। devarājyaṃ mahātejāḥ prāptavānakhilaṃ vibhuḥ ॥14-94-4॥
[देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed one; क्रतुभिः (kratubhiḥ) - by sacrifices; भूरिदक्षिणैः (bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ) - with abundant gifts (to priests); देवराज्यं (devarājyaṃ) - the sovereignty of the gods; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - has obtained; अखिलं (akhilaṃ) - entire; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the all-pervading one;]
(The king of the gods, the thousand-eyed one, by sacrifices with abundant gifts, the sovereignty of the gods, of great splendor, has obtained, entire, the all-pervading one.)
The king of the gods, the thousand-eyed Indra, by means of sacrifices with abundant gifts, has obtained the entire sovereignty of the gods in all his splendor. (14-94-4)
यथा युधिष्ठिरो राजा भीमार्जुनपुरःसरः। सदृशो देवराजेन समृद्ध्या विक्रमेण च ॥१४-९४-५॥
yathā yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bhīmārjunapuraḥsaraḥ। sadṛśo devarājena samṛddhyā vikrameṇa ca ॥14-94-5॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; राजा (rājā) - king; भीमार्जुनपुरःसरः (bhīmārjunapuraḥsaraḥ) - preceded by Bhīma and Arjuna; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - similar; देवराजेन (devarājena) - with Devarāja (Indra); समृद्ध्या (samṛddhyā) - in prosperity; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - in prowess; च (ca) - and;]
(Just as Yudhiṣṭhira the king, preceded by Bhīma and Arjuna, was similar to Devarāja (Indra) in prosperity and in prowess and.)
Just as King Yudhiṣṭhira, with Bhīma and Arjuna at his forefront, was equal to Devarāja (Indra) in both prosperity and valor. (14-94-5)
अथ कस्मात्स नकुलो गर्हयामास तं क्रतुम्। अश्वमेधं महायज्ञं राज्ञस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥१४-९४-६॥
atha kasmāts nakulo garhayāmāsa taṃ kratum। aśvamedhaṃ mahāyajñaṃ rājñas tasya mahātmanaḥ ॥14-94-6॥

(Now, for what reason did Nakula censure that sacrifice, the Aśvamedha, the great sacrifice, of that high-souled king?)
Then, why did Nakula reproach that Aśvamedha, the great sacrifice of that high-souled king? (14-94-6)

यज्ञस्य विधिमग्र्यं वै फलं चैव नरर्षभ। गदतः शृणु मे राजन्यथावदिह भारत ॥१४-९४-७॥
yajñasya vidhim agryaṃ vai phalaṃ caiva nararṣabha। gadataḥ śṛṇu me rājann yathāvad iha bhārata ॥14-94-7॥

(Of the sacrifice, method excellent indeed, fruit and certainly, O best of men, speaking, hear from me, O king, properly, here, O descendant of Bharata.)
O king, O descendant of Bharata, hear from me properly here the excellent method of the sacrifice and its fruit indeed, O best of men, as I am speaking. (14-94-7)
पुरा शक्रस्य यजतः सर्व ऊचुर्महर्षयः। ऋत्विक्षु कर्मव्यग्रेषु वितते यज्ञकर्मणि ॥१४-९४-८॥
purā śakrasya yajataḥ sarva ūcur maharṣayaḥ। ṛtvikṣu karmavyagreṣu vitate yajñakarmaṇi॥14-94-8॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); यजतः (yajataḥ) - performing sacrifice; सर्व (sarva) - all; ऊचुर्महर्षयः (ūcur maharṣayaḥ) - the great sages said; ऋत्विक्षु (ṛtvikṣu) - among the priests; कर्मव्यग्रेषु (karmavyagreṣu) - engaged in ritual acts; वितते (vitate) - spread out; यज्ञकर्मणि (yajñakarmaṇi) - in the sacrificial act;]
(Formerly, of Śakra performing sacrifice, all the great sages said, among the priests engaged in ritual acts, in the spread out sacrificial act.)
Long ago, while Śakra was performing a sacrifice, all the great sages spoke as the priests were occupied in carrying out the extended ritual actions of the sacrifice. (14-94-8)
हूयमाने तथा वह्नौ होत्रे बहुगुणान्विते। देवेष्वाहूयमानेषु स्थितेषु परमर्षिषु ॥१४-९४-९॥
hūyamāne tathā vahnau hotre bahuguṇānvite। deveṣvāhūyamāneṣu sthiteṣu paramarṣiṣu॥14-94-9॥
[हूयमाने (hūyamāne) - being offered (oblations); तथा (tathā) - likewise; वह्नौ (vahnau) - in the fire; होत्रे (hotre) - to the priest; बहुगुणान्विते (bahuguṇānvite) - endowed with many qualities; देवेषु (deveṣu) - among the gods; आहूयमानेषु (āhūyamāneṣu) - being invoked; स्थितेषु (sthiteṣu) - who are present; परमर्षिषु (paramarṣiṣu) - among the great sages;]
(Being offered, likewise, in the fire, to the priest endowed with many qualities; among the gods being invoked, who are present among the great sages.)
Offerings are made likewise in the fire to the priest endowed with many qualities, among the gods being invoked and present among the great sages. (14-94-9)
सुप्रतीतैस्तदा विप्रैः स्वागमैः सुस्वनैर्नृप। अश्रान्तैश्चापि लघुभिरध्वर्युवृषभैस्तथा ॥१४-९४-१०॥
supratītais tadā vipraiḥ svāgamaiḥ susvanair nṛpa। aśrāntaiś cāpi laghubhir adhvaryu-vṛṣabhaiḥ tathā ॥14-94-10॥
[सुप्रतीतैः (supratītaiḥ) - very well-versed; तदा (tadā) - then; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by brāhmaṇas; स्वागमैः (svāgamaiḥ) - with their own traditions; सुस्वनैः (susvanair) - with melodious voices; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; अश्रान्तैः (aśrāntaiḥ) - untiring; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; लघुभिः (laghubhiḥ) - by swift; अध्वर्युवृषभैः (adhvaryu-vṛṣabhaiḥ) - by best adhvaryu priests; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Then, O king, by very well-versed brāhmaṇas with their own traditions and melodious voices; and also by untiring and swift best adhvaryu priests also.)
Then, O king, very well-versed brāhmaṇas, following their own traditions and chanting with melodious voices, as well as untiring and swift adhvaryu priests, attended (the rite). (14-94-10)
आलम्भसमये तस्मिन्गृहीतेषु पशुष्वथ। महर्षयो महाराज सम्बभूवुः कृपान्विताः ॥१४-९४-११॥
ālambhasamaye tasmin gṛhīteṣu paśuṣv atha. maharṣayo mahārāja sambabhūvuḥ kṛpānvitāḥ ॥14-94-11॥
[आलम्भसमये (ālambhasamaye) - at the time of the seizure; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; गृहीतेषु (gṛhīteṣu) - when taken (held, seized); पशुषु (paśuṣu) - among the animals (sacrificial victims); अथ (atha) - then; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सम्भभूवुः (sambabhūvuḥ) - arose (came into being, appeared); कृपा-अन्विताः (kṛpā-anvitāḥ) - possessed of compassion;]
(At the time of the seizure, in that (moment), when the animals were seized, then the great sages, O great king, appeared, possessed of compassion.)
O great king, at that very moment when the animals were being seized, the great sages, full of compassion, appeared. (14-94-11)
ततो दीनान्पशून्दृष्ट्वा ऋषयस्ते तपोधनाः। ऊचुः शक्रं समागम्य नायं यज्ञविधिः शुभः ॥१४-९४-१२॥
tato dīnān paśūn dṛṣṭvā ṛṣayas te tapodhanāḥ। ūcuḥ śakraṃ samāgamya nāyaṃ yajñavidhiḥ śubhaḥ॥14-94-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; दीनान् (dīnān) - miserable; पशून् (paśūn) - animals; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; ते (te) - they; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - rich in austerity; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; शक्रम् (śakram) - to Śakra (Indra); समागम्य (samāgamya) - approaching; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; यज्ञविधिः (yajñavidhiḥ) - sacrifice procedure; शुभः (śubhaḥ) - auspicious;]
(Thereafter, miserable animals having seen, the sages they, rich in austerity, said to Śakra, having approached, not this sacrifice procedure auspicious.)
Then, having seen the miserable animals, those sages endowed with austerity approached Śakra and said, "This sacrificial procedure is not auspicious." (14-94-12)
अपविज्ञानमेतत्ते महान्तं धर्ममिच्छतः। न हि यज्ञे पशुगणा विधिदृष्टाः पुरंदर ॥१४-९४-१३॥
apavijñānam etat te mahāntaṃ dharmam icchataḥ। na hi yajñe paśugaṇā vidhidṛṣṭāḥ puraṃdara ॥14-94-13॥
[अपविज्ञानम् (apavijñānam) - disregard; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; महान्तं (mahāntam) - great; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; इच्छतः (icchataḥ) - desiring; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in sacrifice; पशुगणाः (paśugaṇāḥ) - animals (as a group); विधिदृष्टाः (vidhidṛṣṭāḥ) - prescribed by rule; पुरंदर (puraṃdara) - O Purandara (Indra);]
(Disregard this, to you desiring great dharma; not indeed in sacrifice animals are prescribed by rule, O Purandara.)
This is to be disregarded by you, who desire great dharma; indeed, animals are not prescribed by rule in the sacrifice, O Purandara. (14-94-13)
धर्मोपघातकस्त्वेष समारम्भस्तव प्रभो। नायं धर्मकृतो धर्मो न हिंसा धर्म उच्यते ॥१४-९४-१४॥
dharmopaghātakas tveṣa samārambhas tava prabho। nāyaṃ dharmakṛto dharmo na hiṃsā dharma ucyate ॥14-94-14॥
[धर्मोपघातकः (dharmopaghātakaḥ) - destroyer of dharma; त् (t) - indeed; एष (eṣa) - this; समारम्भः (samārambhaḥ) - undertaking; तव (tava) - your; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; धर्मकृतः (dharmakṛtaḥ) - produced by dharma; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; न (na) - not; हिंसा (hiṃsā) - violence; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(This undertaking of yours, O lord, is indeed a destroyer of dharma; this is not dharma produced by dharma; violence is not called dharma.)
O lord, this action of yours is a destroyer of dharma; this is not true dharma, for violence is not called dharma. (14-94-14)
आगमेनैव ते यज्ञं कुर्वन्तु यदि हेच्छसि। विधिदृष्टेन यज्ञेन धर्मस्ते सुमहान्भवेत् ॥१४-९४-१५॥
āgamenaiva te yajñaṃ kurvantu yadi hecchasi. vidhidṛṣṭena yajñena dharmaste sumahānbhavet ॥14-94-15॥
[आगमेनैव (āgamenaiva) - by tradition indeed; ते (te) - your; यज्ञं (yajñaṃ) - sacrifice; कुर्वन्तु (kurvantu) - let them perform; यदि (yadi) - if; हेच्छसि (hecchasi) - O one who desires (if you desire); विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - prescribed by rule; यज्ञेन (yajñena) - by sacrifice; धर्मस्ते (dharmaste) - your merit; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be;]
(By tradition indeed your sacrifice let them perform, if O one who desires. By sacrifice prescribed by rule your merit very great may be.)
If you desire, let them perform your sacrifice only according to tradition. By a sacrifice prescribed by the rules, your merit will become very great. (14-94-15)
यज बीजैः सहस्राक्ष त्रिवर्षपरमोषितैः। एष धर्मो महाञ्शक्र चिन्त्यमानोऽधिगम्यते ॥१४-९४-१६॥
yaja bījaiḥ sahasrākṣa trivarṣaparam-oṣitaiḥ। eṣa dharmo mahān śakra cintyamānaḥ adhigamyate ॥14-94-16॥
[यज (yaja) - sacrifice; बीजैः (bījaiḥ) - by seeds; सहस्राक्ष (sahasrākṣa) - O thousand-eyed (Indra); त्रिवर्षपरमोषितैः (trivarṣaparam-oṣitaiḥ) - with those that have been preserved for a full three years; एष (eṣa) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - right (ritual); महान् (mahān) - great; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; चिन्त्यमानः (cintyamānaḥ) - when considered; अधिगम्यते (adhigamyate) - is attained;]
(Sacrifice by seeds, O thousand-eyed (Indra), with those that have been preserved for a full three years. This great right (ritual), O Śakra, when considered, is attained.)
O Śakra, sacrifice with seeds that have been preserved for three years; when considered, this great dharma is attained. (14-94-16)
शतक्रतुस्तु तद्वाक्यमृषिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः। उक्तं न प्रतिजग्राह मानमोहवशानुगः ॥१४-९४-१७॥
śatakratustu tadvākyam ṛṣibhis tattvadarśibhiḥ। uktaṃ na pratijagrāha māna-moha-vaśānugaḥ ॥14-94-17॥
[शतक्रुतु: (शतक्रतु:) (śatakratuḥ) - Indra; (epithet meaning 'the performer of a hundred sacrifices'); तु (tu) - but; तद्-वाक्यम् (tad-vākyam) - that statement; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; तत्त्वदर्शिभिः (tattvadarśibhiḥ) - by those who see the truth; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; न (na) - not; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - accepted; मान-मोह-वशानुगः (māna-moha-vaśānugaḥ) - being under the power of pride and delusion;]
(But Indra did not accept that statement spoken by the sages, by those who see the truth, being under the power of pride and delusion.)
But Indra, being under the influence of pride and delusion, did not accept that statement spoken by the sages who see the truth. (14-94-17)
तेषां विवादः सुमहाञ्जज्ञे शक्रमहर्षिणाम्। जङ्गमैः स्थावरैर्वापि यष्टव्यमिति भारत ॥१४-९४-१८॥
teṣāṃ vivādaḥ sumahāñ jajñe śakramaharṣiṇām। jaṅgamaiḥ sthāvarair vāpi yaṣṭavyam iti bhārata ॥14-94-18॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; विवादः (vivādaḥ) - dispute; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; जज्ञे (jajñe) - arose; शक्र-महर्षिणाम् (śakra-maharṣiṇām) - of Indra and the great sages; जङ्गमैः (jaṅgamaiḥ) - with moving beings; स्थावरैः (sthāvaraiḥ) - with immovable beings; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - should be sacrificed; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Of them dispute very great arose, of Indra and the great sages; with moving beings or with immovable beings even should be sacrificed, thus, O Bhārata.)
A very great dispute arose among Indra and the great sages as to whether sacrifices should be offered with offerings from moving beings or immovable beings, O Bhārata. (14-94-18)
ते तु खिन्ना विवादेन ऋषयस्तत्त्वदर्शिनः। ततः सन्धाय शक्रेण पप्रच्छुर्नृपतिं वसुम् ॥१४-९४-१९॥
te tu khinnā vivādena ṛṣayas-tattvadarśinaḥ। tataḥ sandhāya śakreṇa papracchur-nṛpatiṃ vasum ॥14-94-19॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; खिन्ना (khinnāḥ) - distressed; विवादेन (vivādena) - by dispute; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; तत्त्वदर्शिनः (tattvadarśinaḥ) - knowers of reality; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सन्धाय (sandhāya) - having reconciled; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra (Indra); पप्रच्छुः (papracchuḥ) - they questioned; नृपतिं (nṛpatim) - the king; वसुम् (vasum) - Vasu;]
(They but distressed by dispute the sages knowers of reality then having reconciled by Śakra questioned the king Vasu.)
But the sages, knowers of reality, being distressed by the dispute, then, having made peace by means of Śakra, asked King Vasu. (14-94-19)
महाभाग कथं यज्ञेष्वागमो नृपते स्मृतः। यष्टव्यं पशुभिर्मेध्यैरथो बीजैरजैरपि ॥१४-९४-२०॥
mahābhāga kathaṁ yajñeṣv-āgamo nṛpate smṛtaḥ। yaṣṭavyaṁ paśubhir-medhyair-atho bījair-ajair-api ॥14-94-20॥
[महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; आगमः (āgamaḥ) - authority; tradition; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered; is remembered; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - to be sacrificed; ought to be offered; पशुभिः (paśubhiḥ) - by animals; मेध्यैः (medhyaiḥ) - pure; fit for sacrifice; अथः (atho) - and; or; बीजैः (bījaiḥ) - by seeds; अजैः (ajaiḥ) - by goats; अपि (api) - also;]
(O greatly fortunate, how in sacrifices, O king, is tradition considered (that) what is to be sacrificed is by pure animals, or by seeds, or even by goats?)
O greatly fortunate one, O king, how is it that in sacrifices the tradition is maintained, that offerings should be made with pure animals, or with seeds, or even with goats? (14-94-20)
तच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचस्तेषामविचार्य बलाबलम्। यथोपनीतैर्यष्टव्यमिति प्रोवाच पार्थिवः ॥१४-९४-२१॥
tac chrutvā tu vacas teṣām avicārya balābalam। yathopanītair yaṣṭavyam iti provāca pārthivaḥ ॥14-94-21॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अविचार्य (avicārya) - without considering; बल-अबलम् (bala-abalam) - strength and weakness; यथोपनीतैः (yathopanītaiḥ) - with whatever is brought; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - is to be sacrificed; इति (iti) - thus; प्रोवाच (provāca) - he said; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
(That having heard but speech of them, without considering strength and weakness, with whatever is brought, is to be sacrificed—thus said the king.)
Having heard their words, the king, without considering strength or weakness, said: "The sacrifice should be performed with whatever has been brought." (14-94-21)
एवमुक्त्वा स नृपतिः प्रविवेश रसातलम्। उक्त्वेह वितथं राजंश्चेदीनामीश्वरः प्रभुः ॥१४-९४-२२॥
evam-uktvā sa nṛpatiḥ praviveśa rasātalam। uktveha vitathaṃ rājaṃś-cedīnāmiśvaraḥ prabhuḥ॥14-94-22॥
[एवम् (evam) (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) (sa) - he; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) (nṛpatiḥ) - king; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) (praviveśa) - entered; रसातलम् (rasātalam) (rasātalam) - the netherworld; उक्त्वा (uktvā) (uktvā) - having said; इह (iha) (iha) - here; वितथम् (vitatham) (vitatham) - false; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; चेदीनाम् (cedīnām) (cedīnām) - of the Cedis; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) (īśvaraḥ) - lord; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) (prabhuḥ) - master;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the king, entered the netherworld. Having spoken something false here, O king, the lord and master of the Cedis.)
Having said this, the king entered the netherworld. Here, having told a falsehood, O king, the lord and ruler of the Cedis. (14-94-22)
अन्यायोपगतं द्रव्यमतीतं यो ह्यपण्डितः। धर्माभिकाङ्क्षी यजते न धर्मफलमश्नुते ॥१४-९४-२३॥
anyāyopagataṃ dravyamatītaṃ yo hyapaṇḍitaḥ. dharmābhikāṅkṣī yajate na dharmaphalamaśnute ॥14-94-23॥
[अन्यायोपगतं (anyāyopagatam) - acquired through injustice; द्रव्यम् (dravyam) - wealth; अतीतम् (atītam) - passed; यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; अपण्डितः (apaṇḍitaḥ) - unwise person; धर्माभिकाङ्क्षी (dharmābhikāṅkṣī) - desiring righteousness; यजते (yajate) - he sacrifices; न (na) - not; धर्मफलम् (dharmaphalam) - fruit of righteousness; अश्नुते (aśnute) - enjoys;]
(Who indeed, the unwise person, with wealth acquired through injustice, passed, desiring righteousness, sacrifices, does not enjoy the fruit of righteousness.)
The unwise person who performs sacrifice with wealth acquired unjustly, desiring virtue, does not enjoy the fruit of righteousness. (14-94-23)
धर्मवैतंसिको यस्तु पापात्मा पुरुषस्तथा। ददाति दानं विप्रेभ्यो लोकविश्वासकारकम् ॥१४-९४-२४॥
dharmavaitaṃsiko yastu pāpātmā puruṣastathā। dadāti dānaṃ viprebhyo lokaviśvāsakārakam ॥14-94-24॥
[धर्मवैतंसिकः (dharmavaitaṃsikaḥ) - who is deprived of dharma; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - wicked-souled; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; तथा (tathā) - also; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; दानम् (dānam) - gift; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; लोकविश्वासकारकम् (lokaviśvāsakārakam) - causing trust in people;]
(Who is deprived of dharma, who but wicked-souled man also gives gift to the Brāhmaṇas causing trust in people.)
But that wicked-souled man who is deprived of dharma, yet gives a gift to the Brāhmaṇas that causes trust among people. (14-94-24)
पापेन कर्मणा विप्रो धनं लब्ध्वा निरङ्कुशः। रागमोहान्वितः सोऽन्ते कलुषां गतिमाप्नुते ॥१४-९४-२५॥
pāpena karmaṇā vipro dhanaṃ labdhvā niraṅkuśaḥ। rāgamohānvitaḥ so’nte kaluṣāṃ gatim āpnute॥14-94-25॥
[पापेन (pāpena) - by evil; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; निरङ्कुशः (niraṅkuśaḥ) - unrestrained; रागमोहान्वितः (rāgamohānvitaḥ) - possessed with passion and delusion; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; कलुषाम् (kaluṣām) - impure; गतिम् (gatim) - state; आप्नुते (āpnute) - he attains;]
(By evil action the Brāhmaṇa, having obtained wealth, unrestrained, possessed with passion and delusion, he at the end attains an impure state.)
A Brāhmaṇa who acquires wealth through evil deeds, acts without restraint, and is possessed by passion and delusion, ultimately attains a degraded end. (14-94-25)
तेन दत्तानि दानानि पापेन हतबुद्धिना। तानि सत्त्वमनासाद्य नश्यन्ति विपुलान्यपि ॥१४-९४-२६॥
tena dattāni dānāni pāpena hatabuddhinā। tāni sattvam anāsādya naśyanti vipulāni api ॥14-94-26॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; दत्तानि (dattāni) - given; दानानि (dānāni) - gifts; पापेन (pāpena) - by the wicked; हतबुद्धिना (hatabuddhinā) - with destroyed intelligence; तानि (tāni) - those; सत्त्वम् (sattvam) - noble being; अनासाद्य (anāsādya) - not reaching; नश्यन्ति (naśyanti) - perish; विपुलानि (vipulāni) - great ones; अपि (api) - even;]
(By him, given gifts by the wicked one of destroyed intelligence, those, not reaching (a) noble being, perish, even the great ones.)
The gifts given by him, who is wicked and of ruined intelligence, if they do not reach a noble being, even the greatest of them perish. (14-94-26)
तस्याधर्मप्रवृत्तस्य हिंसकस्य दुरात्मनः। दाने न कीर्तिर्भवति प्रेत्य चेह च दुर्मतेः ॥१४-९४-२७॥
tasyādharmapravṛttasya hiṁsakasya durātmanaḥ. dāne na kīrtir bhavati pretya ceha ca durmateḥ ॥14-94-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; अधर्मप्रवृत्तस्य (adharmapravṛttasya) - of one engaged in unrighteousness; हिंसकस्य (hiṁsakasya) - of the violent one; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - of the evil-minded; दाने (dāne) - in giving (charity); न (na) - not; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - renown; भवति (bhavati) - exists; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here (in this world); च (ca) - and; दुर्मतेः (durmateḥ) - of the wicked-minded;]
(Of him engaged in unrighteousness, of the violent one, of the evil-minded, in giving, no renown exists after death and here and (of the) wicked-minded;)
For one engaged in unrighteousness, violent, and evil-minded, there is no renown from giving, either after death or here, for the wicked-minded. (14-94-27)
अपि सञ्चयबुद्धिर्हि लोभमोहवशङ्गतः। उद्वेजयति भूतानि हिंसया पापचेतनः ॥१४-९४-२८॥
api sañcayabuddhir hi lobhamohavaśaṅgataḥ। udvejayati bhūtāni hiṃsayā pāpacetanaḥ ॥14-94-28॥
[अपि (api) - even; सञ्चयबुद्धिः (sañcayabuddhiḥ) - accumulation-minded person; हि (hi) - indeed; लोभमोहवशङ्गतः (lobhamoha-vaśaṅgataḥ) - deprived by greed and delusion; उद्वेजयति (udvejayati) - agitates; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; हिंसया (hiṃsayā) - by violence; पापचेतनः (pāpacetanaḥ) - evil-minded;]
(Even the accumulation-minded person, indeed, deprived by greed and delusion, agitates beings by violence, evil-minded.)
Even an accumulation-minded person, indeed, under the sway of greed and delusion, being evil-minded, agitates living beings through violence. (14-94-28)
एवं लब्ध्वा धनं लोभाद्यजते यो ददाति च। स कृत्वा कर्मणा तेन न सिध्यति दुरागमात् ॥१४-९४-२९॥
evaṁ labdhvā dhanaṁ lobhād yajate yo dadāti ca। sa kṛtvā karmaṇā tena na sidhyati durāgamāt ॥14-94-29॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; धनं (dhanaṁ) - wealth; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from greed; यजते (yajate) - offers (a sacrifice); यः (yaḥ) - who; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; तेन (tena) - by that; न (na) - not; सिध्यति (sidhyati) - becomes successful; दुरागमात् (durāgamāt) - because of impure acquisition;]
(Thus having obtained wealth from greed, who offers (a sacrifice), gives also; he having done, by that action, not becomes successful because of impure acquisition.)
Thus, one who, having obtained wealth through greed, offers a sacrifice or gives (charity), he, having performed that action, does not succeed because of its impure acquisition. (14-94-29)
उञ्छं मूलं फलं शाकमुदपात्रं तपोधनाः। दानं विभवतो दत्त्वा नराः स्वर्यान्ति धर्मिणः ॥१४-९४-३०॥
uñchaṃ mūlaṃ phalaṃ śākam udapātraṃ tapodhanāḥ। dānaṃ vibhavato dattvā narāḥ svaryānti dharmiṇaḥ॥14-94-30॥
[उञ्छं (uñcham) - gleaned grain; मूलं (mūlam) - root; फलं (phalam) - fruit; शाकम् (śākam) - vegetable; उदपात्रं (udapātram) - water-pot; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics; दानं (dānam) - gift; विभवतः (vibhavataḥ) - from wealth; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; नराः (narāḥ) - men; स्वः (svaḥ) - heaven; यान्ति (yānti) - go; धर्मिणः (dharmiṇaḥ) - the righteous;]
(Gleaned grain, root, fruit, vegetable, water-pot—the ascetics; gift from wealth, having given, men, heaven go, the righteous.)
Ascetics subsist on gleaned grain, roots, fruits, vegetables, and a water-pot; by giving gifts from their wealth, righteous men reach heaven. (14-94-30)
एष धर्मो महांस्त्यागो दानं भूतदया तथा। ब्रह्मचर्यं तथा सत्यमनुक्रोशो धृतिः क्षमा ॥ सनातनस्य धर्मस्य मूलमेतत्सनातनम् ॥१४-९४-३१॥
eṣa dharmo mahāṃstyāgo dānaṃ bhūtadayā tathā। brahmacaryaṃ tathā satyamanukrośo dhṛtiḥ kṣamā॥ sanātanasya dharmasya mūlametatsanātanam॥14-94-31॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; महान् (mahān) - great; त्यागः (tyāgaḥ) - renunciation; relinquishment; दानम् (dānam) - gift; charity; भूतदया (bhūtadayā) - compassion towards beings; तथा (tathā) - also; ब्रह्मचर्यम् (brahmacaryam) - celibacy; conduct of Brahmacharya; तथा (tathā) - also; सत्यं (satyam) - truth; अनुक्रोशः (anukrośaḥ) - kindness; sympathy; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; fortitude; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forgiveness; सनातनस्य (sanātanasya) - of eternal; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; मूलम् (mūlam) - root; एतत् (etat) - this; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(This dharma: great renunciation, gift, compassion towards beings, also brahmacarya, also truth, kindness, steadfastness, forgiveness; of the eternal dharma this is the eternal root.)
This is dharma: great renunciation, charity, compassion for all beings, celibacy, truth, kindness, steadfastness, and forgiveness; these are the eternal roots of eternal dharma. (14-94-31)
श्रूयन्ते हि पुरा विप्रा विश्वामित्रादयो नृपाः। विश्वामित्रोऽसितश्चैव जनकश्च महीपतिः ॥ कक्षसेनार्ष्टिषेणौ च सिन्धुद्वीपश्च पार्थिवः ॥१४-९४-३२॥
śrūyante hi purā viprā viśvāmitrādayo nṛpāḥ। viśvāmitro'sitaścaiva janakaśca mahīpatiḥ॥ kakṣasenārṣṭiṣeṇau ca sindhudvīpaśca pārthivaḥ॥14-94-32॥
[श्रूयन्ते (śrūyante) - are heard; are reported; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; पुरा (purā) - formerly; of old; in the past; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brahmans; sages; विश्वामित्रादयः (viśvāmitrādayaḥ) - Viśvāmitra and others; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; rulers; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; असितः (asitaḥ) - Asita; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; जनकः (janakaḥ) - Janaka; च (ca) - and; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; lord of earth; कक्षसेन (kakṣasena) - Kakṣasena; अर्ष्टिषेणौ (arṣṭiṣeṇau) - Arṣṭiṣeṇa; च (ca) - and; सिन्धुद्वीपः (sindhudvīpaḥ) - Sindhudvīpa; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; sovereign;]
(Are heard indeed formerly brahmans Viśvāmitra and others kings. Viśvāmitra Asita and indeed Janaka and king. Kakṣasena Arṣṭiṣeṇa and Sindhudvīpa and king. (14-94-32))
Formerly, brahmans such as Viśvāmitra and other kings are indeed recorded. Viśvāmitra, Asita, and also Janaka, the king, as well as Kakṣasena and Arṣṭiṣeṇa, and Sindhudvīpa, are kings. (14-94-32)
एते चान्ये च बहवः सिद्धिं परमिकां गताः। नृपाः सत्यैश्च दानैश्च न्यायलब्धैस्तपोधनाः ॥१४-९४-३३॥
ete cānye ca bahavaḥ siddhiṃ paramikāṃ gatāḥ। nṛpāḥ satyaiś ca dānaiś ca nyāya-labdhaiḥ tapa-dhanāḥ॥14-94-33॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; सिद्धिं (siddhiṃ) - perfection; परमिकां (paramikāṃ) - supreme; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; सत्यैः (satyaiḥ) - with truths; च (ca) - and; दानैः (dānaiḥ) - with gifts; च (ca) - and; न्यायलब्धैः (nyāyalabdhaiḥ) - rightfully obtained; तपोधनाः (tapa-dhanāḥ) - ascetics as wealth;]
(These and others and many have gone to the supreme perfection. Kings with truths and with gifts and with rightfully obtained, ascetics as wealth.)
These, as well as many others, have attained the highest perfection—kings through truthfulness, through gifts, and by means acquired righteously, and ascetics as their wealth. (14-94-33)
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्रा ये चाश्रितास्तपः। दानधर्माग्निना शुद्धास्ते स्वर्गं यान्ति भारत ॥१४-९४-३४॥
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyāḥ śūdrā ye cāśritāstapaḥ। dānadharmāgninā śuddhāste svargaṃ yānti bhārata॥14-94-34॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - Vaiśyas; शूद्राः (śūdrāḥ) - Śūdras; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - resorted to; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; दान (dāna) - giving; धर्म (dharma) - duty; अग्निना (agninā) - by the fire; शुद्धाः (śuddhāḥ) - purified; ते (te) - they; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - heaven; यान्ति (yānti) - go; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, Śūdras, who and have resorted to austerity, by the fire of giving and duty purified, they heaven go, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras who have embraced austerity and are purified by the fire of charity and duty, they attain heaven. (14-94-34)
