स राजा सुमहातेजा वृद्धः कुरुकुलोद्वहः। नापश्यत तदा किञ्चिदप्रियं पाण्डुनन्दने ॥१५-३-१॥
sa rājā sumahātejā vṛddhaḥ kurukulodvahaḥ। nāpaśyat tadā kiñcid apriyaṃ pāṇḍunandane ॥15-3-1॥
[स (sa) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; सुमहातेजा (sumahātejā) - endowed with great brilliance; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; कुरुकुलोद्वहः (kurukulodvahaḥ) - the exalted one of the Kuru lineage; न (na) - not; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; तदा (tadā) - then; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अप्रियं (apriyaṃ) - unpleasant; पाण्डुनन्दने (pāṇḍunandane) - to the son of Pāṇḍu;]
(That king, endowed with great brilliance, aged, the exalted one of the Kuru lineage, did not see then anything unpleasant to the son of Pāṇḍu.)
That king, endowed with great brilliance and advanced in age, the foremost of the Kuru lineage, at that time saw nothing unpleasant happen to the son of Pāṇḍu. (15-3-1)
वर्तमानेषु सद्वृत्तिं पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। प्रीतिमानभवद्राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥१५-३-२॥
vartamāneṣu sadvṛttiṁ pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। prītimānabhavad rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro’mbikāsutaḥ ॥15-3-2॥
[वर्तमानेषु (vartamāneṣu) - in the present (ones); सद्वृत्तिं (sadvṛttim) - good conduct; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - among the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - great-souled; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - possessed of affection; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; राजा (rājā) - king; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; अम्बिका-सुतः (ambikā-sutaḥ) - son of Ambikā;]
(In the present (ones) good conduct among the Pāṇḍavas great-souled, possessed of affection became king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, son of Ambikā.)
The king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, son of Ambikā, became affectionately disposed toward the Pāṇḍavas—those great-souled ones of good conduct—in the present time. (15-3-2)
सौबलेयी च गान्धारी पुत्रशोकमपास्य तम्। सदैव प्रीतिमत्यासीत्तनयेषु निजेष्विव ॥१५-३-३॥
saubaleyī ca gāndhārī putraśokam apāsya tam। sadaiva prītimaty āsīt tanayeṣu nijeṣv iva ॥15-3-3॥
[सौबलेयी (saubaleyī) - daughter of Subala; Gandhārī; च (ca) - and; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhārī; पुत्रशोकम् (putraśokam) - grief for sons; अपास्य (apāsya) - having set aside; तम् (tam) - that; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; प्रीतिमती (prītimatī) - affectionate; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तनयेषु (tanayeṣu) - towards sons; निजेषु (nijeṣu) - her own; इव (iva) - as if;]
(And Gandhārī, daughter of Subala, having set aside that grief for (her) sons, always was affectionate towards (them), as if (they were) her own sons.)
And Gandhārī, the daughter of Subala, having put away her grief for her sons, was always affectionate towards them, as though they were her own sons. (15-3-3)
प्रियाण्येव तु कौरव्यो नाप्रियाणि कुरूद्वह। वैचित्रवीर्ये नृपतौ समाचरति नित्यदा ॥१५-३-४॥
priyāṇy eva tu kauravyo nāpriyāṇi kurūdvaha। vaicitrapīrye nṛpatau samācarati nityadā ॥15-3-4॥
[प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - pleasant things; things dear; things liked; एव (eva) - only; indeed; तु (tu) - but; कौरव्यो (kauravyo) - Kauravya; the Kaurava (descendant of Kuru); न (na) - not; अप्रियाणि (apriyāṇi) - unpleasant things; things not liked; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O uplifter of the Kurus; best among Kurus; वैचित्रवीर्ये (vaicitrapīrye) - in Vichitravirya; regarding Vichitravirya; नृपतौ (nṛpatau) - the king; समाचरति (samācarati) - acts; performs; practices; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; at all times;]
(Pleasant things only but Kauravya, not unpleasant things, O Kurudvaha. In Vichitravirya the king, he acts always.)
O best among the Kurus, Kauravya only does what is pleasant for King Vichitravirya, not what is unpleasant, always. (15-3-4)
यद्यद्ब्रूते च किञ्चित्स धृतराष्ट्रो नराधिपः। गुरु वा लघु वा कार्यं गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१५-३-५॥
yadyad brūte ca kiñcit sa dhṛtarāṣṭro narādhipaḥ। guru vā laghu vā kāryaṁ gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī ॥15-3-5॥
[यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; ब्रूते (brūte) - says; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; सः (saḥ) - he; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; गुरु (guru) - weighty; वा (vā) - or; लघु (laghu) - light; वा (vā) - or; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious;]
(Whatever he, Dhṛtarāṣṭra the king, says, and whatever action, whether weighty or light, also (does) Gāndhārī the illustrious.)
Whatever king Dhṛtarāṣṭra says, whether the matter is weighty or light, Gāndhārī the illustrious also acts accordingly. (15-3-5)
तत्स राजा महाराज पाण्डवानां धुरन्धरः। पूजयित्वा वचस्तत्तदकार्षीत्परवीरहा ॥१५-३-६॥
tats rājā mahārāja pāṇḍavānāṃ dhurandharaḥ। pūjayitvā vacas tattad akārṣīt paravīrahā ॥15-3-6॥
[तत्स (tats) - then; (that time); राजा (rājā) - king; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; धुरन्धरः (dhurandharaḥ) - chief; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; वचः (vacas) - words; तत्तत् (tattat) - each, various; अकार्षीत् (akārṣīt) - he did; (performed; executed;) परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(Then the king, the great king, chief of the Pāṇḍavas, having honored the words, each, did, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
Then the king, the great king and leader of the Pāṇḍavas, having honored those various words, did them; he was the destroyer of enemy heroes. (15-3-6)
तेन तस्याभवत्प्रीतो वृत्तेन स नराधिपः। अन्वतप्यच्च संस्मृत्य पुत्रं मन्दमचेतसम् ॥१५-३-७॥
tena tasyābhavatprīto vṛttena sa narādhipaḥ. anvatapyacca saṃsmṛtya putraṃ mandamacetasam ॥15-3-7॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; by him; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; वृत्तेन (vṛttena) - by the conduct; by the behavior; स (sa) - he; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king; the ruler of men; अन्वतप्यत् (anvatapyat) - he grieved; he repented; च (ca) - and; संस्मृत्य (saṃsmṛtya) - having remembered; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; मन्दम् (mandam) - dull; slow; अचेतसम् (acetasam) - unintelligent; lacking sense;]
(By that, of him, he became pleased by the conduct, that king. And he grieved having remembered the son, dull, unintelligent.)
By that conduct, the king became pleased with him. And recalling his son, who was dull and unintelligent, he also felt regret. (15-3-7)
सदा च प्रातरुत्थाय कृतजप्यः शुचिर्नृपः। आशास्ते पाण्डुपुत्राणां समरेष्वपराजयम् ॥१५-३-८॥
sadā ca prātar-utthāya kṛta-japyaḥ śuciḥ nṛpaḥ। āśāste pāṇḍu-putrāṇām samareṣu aparājayam ॥15-3-8॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; च (ca) - and; प्रातरुत्थाय (prātar-utthāya) - having risen in the morning; कृतजप्यः (kṛta-japyaḥ) - having performed the recitation; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; आशास्ते (āśāste) - he desires; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍu-putrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; समरेषु (samareṣu) - in battles; अपराजयम् (aparājayam) - unconquerability;]
(Always and having risen in the morning, having performed the recitation, the pure king desires unconquerability of the sons of Pāṇḍu in battles.)
The pure king always, after rising in the morning and performing recitations, desires the sons of Pāṇḍu to be invincible in battles. (15-3-8)
ब्राह्मणान्वाचयित्वा च हुत्वा चैव हुताशनम्। आयुष्यं पाण्डुपुत्राणामाशास्ते स नराधिपः ॥१५-३-९॥
brāhmaṇān vācayitvā ca hutvā caiva hutāśanam। āyuṣyam pāṇḍu-putrāṇām āśāste sa narādhipaḥ ॥15-3-9॥
[ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; वाचयित्वा (vācayitvā) - having caused to recite; च (ca) - and; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered oblations; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - the fire (Agni); आयुष्यं (āyuṣyam) - longevity (rite); पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍu-putrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; आशास्ते (āśāste) - prays/wishes; स (sa) - he; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
(Having caused the Brāhmaṇas to recite and having indeed offered oblations into the fire, he, the king, prays for the longevity of the sons of Pāṇḍu.)
After causing the Brāhmaṇas to recite and offering oblations into the fire, the king prays for the long life of the sons of Pāṇḍu. (15-3-9)
न तां प्रीतिं परामाप पुत्रेभ्यः स महीपतिः। यां प्रीतिं पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यः समवाप तदा नृपः ॥१५-३-१०॥
na tāṃ prītiṃ parām āpa putrebhyaḥ sa mahīpatiḥ। yāṃ prītiṃ pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ samavāpa tadā nṛpaḥ॥15-3-10॥
[न (na) - not; तां (tāṃ) - that; प्रीतिं (prītiṃ) - affection; पराम् (parām) - supreme; आप (āpa) - obtained; पुत्रेभ्यः (putrebhyaḥ) - from (his own) sons; स (sa) - he; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; यां (yāṃ) - which; प्रीतिं (prītiṃ) - affection; पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यः (pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ) - from the sons of Pāṇḍu; समवाप (samavāpa) - obtained together / fully attained; तदा (tadā) - then; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king;]
(Not that affection supreme did he the king obtain from (his own) sons; which affection from the sons of Pāṇḍu the king then fully attained.)
The king did not receive that supreme affection from his own sons which he then fully received from the sons of Pāṇḍu. (15-3-10)
ब्राह्मणानां च वृद्धानां क्षत्रियाणां च भारत। तथा विट्शूद्रसङ्घानामभवत्सुप्रियस्तदा ॥१५-३-११॥
brāhmaṇānāṃ ca vṛddhānāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ ca bhārata। tathā viṭ-śūdra-saṅghānām abhavat supriyās tadā ॥15-3-11॥
[ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; वृद्धानां (vṛddhānām) - of the elders; क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kṣatriyas; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तथा (tathā) - likewise; विट्शूद्रसङ्घानाम् (viṭ-śūdra-saṅghānām) - of the groups of Vaiśyas and Śūdras; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सुप्रियः (supriyaḥ) - very dear; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(Of the Brāhmaṇas and of the elders, of the Kṣatriyas and, O Bhārata, likewise of the groups of Vaiśyas and Śūdras, he became very dear at that time.)
O Bhārata, at that time he became very dear to the Brāhmaṇas, the elders, the Kṣatriyas, and likewise to all the groups of Vaiśyas and Śūdras. (15-3-11)
यच्च किञ्चित्पुरा पापं धृतराष्ट्रसुतैः कृतम्। अकृत्वा हृदि तद्राजा तं नृपं सोऽन्ववर्तत ॥१५-३-१२॥
yacca kiñcit purā pāpaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭra-sutaiḥ kṛtam। akṛtvā hṛdi tad rājā taṃ nṛpaṃ so'nvavartata ॥15-3-12॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - some; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पापम् (pāpam) - wrong; धृतराष्ट्रसुतैः (dhṛtarāṣṭra-sutaiḥ) - by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अकृत्वा (akṛtvā) - not retaining; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (his) heart; तत् (tat) - that; राजा (rājā) - the king; तम् (tam) - him; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्ववर्तत (anvavartata) - followed;]
(And which some wrong formerly done by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, not retaining that in (his) heart, the king followed that king he.)
When some wrong had formerly been done by the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king, not keeping that in his heart, followed him, that king. (15-3-12)
यश्च कश्चिन्नरः किञ्चिदप्रियं चाम्बिकासुते। कुरुते द्वेष्यतामेति स कौन्तेयस्य धीमतः ॥१५-३-१३॥
yaś ca kaścinnarāḥ kiñcid apriyaṃ cāmbikāsute। kurute dveṣyatām eti sa kaunteyasya dhīmataḥ॥15-3-13॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; कश्चिन् (kaścit) - someone; नरः (naraḥ) - man; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant; च (ca) - and; अम्बिकासुते (ambikāsute) - to the son of Ambikā; कुरुते (kurute) - does; द्वेष्यताम् (dveṣyatām) - state of being hated; एति (eti) - attains; सः (saḥ) - he; कौन्तेयस्य (kaunteyasya) - of Kunti's son; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise;]
(Whoever man and something unpleasant to the son of Ambikā does, the state of being hated attains he, of Kunti's wise son.)
Whoever among men does even a little of something unpleasant to the son of Ambikā becomes hated by the wise son of Kunti. (15-3-13)
न राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य न च दुर्योधनस्य वै। उवाच दुष्कृतं किञ्चिद्युधिष्ठिरभयान्नरः ॥१५-३-१४॥
na rājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya na ca duryodhanasya vai। uvāca duṣkṛtaṃ kiñcid yudhiṣṭhira-bhayāt naraḥ॥15-3-14॥
[न (na) - not; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; वै (vai) - indeed; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - wrong deed; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; युधिष्ठिरभयात् (yudhiṣṭhira-bhayāt) - out of fear of Yudhiṣṭhira; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Not of the king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, nor indeed of Duryodhana, did any man speak even a little wrong deed, out of fear of Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Due to fear of Yudhiṣṭhira, no man spoke of any wrongdoing by King Dhṛtarāṣṭra or by Duryodhana. (15-3-14)
धृत्या तुष्टो नरेन्द्रस्य गान्धारी विदुरस्तथा। शौचेन चाजातशत्रोर्न तु भीमस्य शत्रुहन् ॥१५-३-१५॥
dhṛtyā tuṣṭo narendrasya gāndhārī viduras tathā। śaucena cājātaśatron na tu bhīmasya śatruhan ॥15-3-15॥
[धृत्या (dhṛtyā) - by steadfastness; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - satisfied; नरेन्द्रस्य (narendrasya) - of the king; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; तथा (tathā) - likewise; शौचेन (śaucena) - by purity; च (ca) - and; अजातशत्रोः (ajātaśatroḥ) - of Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira); न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; शत्रुहन् (śatruhan) - the slayer of enemies;]
(By steadfastness, satisfied with the king, Gāndhārī and Vidura likewise; by purity and of Ajātaśatru, not but of Bhīma, the slayer of enemies.)
Gāndhārī and Vidura were satisfied with the king by his steadfastness; likewise, the slayer of enemies (Kṛṣṇa) was not satisfied with Bhīma, but with Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira) because of his purity. (15-3-15)
अन्ववर्तत भीमोऽपि निष्टनन्धर्मजं नृपम्। धृतराष्ट्रं च सम्प्रेक्ष्य सदा भवति दुर्मनाः ॥१५-३-१६॥
anvavartata bhīmo'pi niṣṭanandharmajaṃ nṛpam। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ ca samprekṣya sadā bhavati durmanāḥ ॥15-3-16॥
[अन्ववर्तत (anvavartata) - followed; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; अपि (api) - also; निष्टनन् (niṣṭanan) - sighing; धर्मजं (dharmajam) - born of Dharma; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - seeing; सदा (sadā) - always; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; दुर्मनाः (durmanāḥ) - distressed in mind;]
(Followed Bhima also sighing the king born of Dharma; Dhritarashtra and seeing always becomes distressed in mind.)
Bhima also followed, sighing, the king born of Dharma; and always, when seeing Dhritarashtra, he becomes distressed in mind. (15-3-16)
राजानमनुवर्तन्तं धर्मपुत्रं महामतिम्। अन्ववर्तत कौरव्यो हृदयेन पराङ्मुखः ॥१५-३-१७॥
rājānam anuvartantaṃ dharmaputraṃ mahāmatim। anvavartata kauravyo hṛdayena parāṅmukhaḥ ॥15-3-17॥
[राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; (accusative singular); अनुवर्तन्तम् (anuvartantam) - following; (present participle, accusative singular); धर्मपुत्रम् (dharmaputram) - Dharmaputra; son of Dharma; (accusative singular); महामतिम् (mahāmatim) - great-intellect; (accusative singular); अन्ववर्तत (anvavartata) - followed; (imperfect, 3rd person singular); कौरव्यो (kauravyo) - the Kaurava; (nominative singular); हृदयेन (hṛdayena) - with (his) heart; पराङ्मुखः (parāṅmukhaḥ) - turned away; averted; (nominative singular);]
(The Kaurava, having followed the king-following Dharmaputra, of great intellect, followed (him) with (his) heart turned away.)
The Kaurava followed Dharmaputra, the great-souled king-follower, but with his heart averted. (15-3-17)
