Vaiśampāyana said;
युधिष्ठिरस्य नृपतेर्दुर्योधनपितुस्तथा। नान्तरं ददृशू राजन्पुरुषाः प्रणयं प्रति ॥१५-४-१॥
yudhiṣṭhirasya nṛpater duryodhanapitus tathā। nāntaraṃ dadṛśū rājan puruṣāḥ praṇayaṃ prati ॥15-4-1॥
[युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; दुर्योधनपितुः (duryodhanapituḥ) - of Duryodhana's father; तथा (tathā) - likewise; न (na) - not; अन्तरम् (antaram) - distinction; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - (they) saw; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; प्रणयम् (praṇayam) - affection; प्रति (prati) - regarding;]
(Of Yudhiṣṭhira, of the king, of Duryodhana's father likewise, not distinction (they) saw, O king, men, affection regarding.)
O king, men saw no distinction regarding affection between Yudhiṣṭhira, the king, and Duryodhana's father. (15-4-1)
यदा तु कौरवो राजा पुत्रं सस्मार बालिशम्। तदा भीमं हृदा राजन्नपध्याति स पार्थिवः ॥१५-४-२॥
yadā tu kauravo rājā putraṃ sasmāra bāliśam। tadā bhīmaṃ hṛdā rājannapadhyāti sa pārthivaḥ॥15-4-2॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; तु (tu) - but; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava; राजा (rājā) - king; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; बालिशम् (bāliśam) - childish; तदा (tadā) - then; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhima; हृदा (hṛdā) - in (his) heart; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अपध्याति (apadhyāti) - contemplates; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
(When but the Kaurava king his son childish remembered, then Bhima in (his) heart, O king, contemplates he king.)
But whenever the Kaurava king remembered his childish son, then the king, O king, would dwell (in thought) on Bhima in his heart. (15-4-2)
तथैव भीमसेनोऽपि धृतराष्ट्रं जनाधिपम्। नामर्षयत राजेन्द्र सदैवातुष्टवद्धृदा ॥१५-४-३॥
tathaiva bhīmaseno'pi dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ janādhipam। nāmarṣayata rājendra sadaivātuṣṭavaddhṛdā ॥15-4-3॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; in the same way; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; अपि (api) - also; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जन-अधिपम् (jana-adhipam) - lord of people; king; न (na) - not; अमर्षयत् (amarṣayat) - resented; became angry at; was intolerant toward; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; आतुष्टवत्-हृदा (ātuṣṭavat-hṛdā) - with always-contented heart;]
(Just so Bhīmasena also Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of people, not resented, O king, always with contented heart.)
In the same way, Bhīmasena also never resented Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of the people, O king, and always acted with a contented heart. (15-4-3)
अप्रकाशान्यप्रियाणि चकारास्य वृकोदरः। आज्ञां प्रत्यहरच्चापि कृतकैः पुरुषैः सदा ॥१५-४-४॥
aprakāśāny apriyāṇi cakārāsya vṛkodaraḥ। ājñāṁ pratyaharac cāpi kṛtakaiḥ puruṣaiḥ sadā॥15-4-4॥
[अप्रकाशानि (aprakāśāni) - not-public; secret; hidden; अप्रियाणि (apriyāṇi) - unpleasant; disagreeable; चकार (cakāra) - he did; he performed; अस्य (asya) - of him; his; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara; (Bhīma, name of a person); आज्ञाम् (ājñām) - command; order; प्रत्यहरत् (pratyaharaṭ) - he withdrew; he took away; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कृतकैः (kṛtakaiḥ) - by the hired; by the paid persons; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Not-public unpleasant acts he did, of him Vṛkodara; the command he withdrew also, by the hired men always.)
Vṛkodara (Bhīma) secretly performed unpleasant acts for him; he also always revoked orders through hired men. (15-4-4)
अथ भीमः सुहृन्मध्ये बाहुशब्दं तथाकरोत्। संश्रवे धृतराष्ट्रस्य गान्धार्याश्चाप्यमर्षणः ॥१५-४-५॥
atha bhīmaḥ suhṛn-madhye bāhu-śabdaṃ tathākarot। saṃśrave dhṛtarāṣṭrasya gāndhāryāś cāpy amārṣaṇaḥ॥15-4-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - friend; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; बाहुशब्दं (bāhu-śabdam) - arm sound; तथा (tathā) - thus; अकरोत् (akarot) - he made; संश्रवे (saṃśrave) - audible; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; गान्धार्याः (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अमर्षणः (amārṣaṇaḥ) - indignant;]
(Then Bhīma, in the midst of friends, thus made a sound with his arm; audible to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and also to the indignant Gāndhārī.)
Then Bhīma, in the midst of friends, made that arm sound; it was heard by Dhṛtarāṣṭra and also by the indignant Gāndhārī. (15-4-5)
स्मृत्वा दुर्योधनं शत्रुं कर्णदुःशासनावपि। प्रोवाचाथ सुसंरब्धो भीमः स परुषं वचः ॥१५-४-६॥
smṛtvā duryodhanaṃ śatruṃ karṇaduḥśāsanāv api। provācātha susaṃrabdho bhīmaḥ sa paruṣaṃ vacaḥ ॥15-4-6॥
[स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - having remembered; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; शत्रुं (śatrum) - enemy; कर्णदुःशासनौ (karṇaduḥśāsanau) - Karṇa and Duḥśāsana; अपि (api) - also; प्रोवाच (provāca) - he spoke; अथ (atha) - then; सुसंरब्धः (susaṃrabdhaḥ) - very enraged; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; सः (saḥ) - he; परुषं (paruṣam) - harsh; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Having remembered Duryodhana, the enemy, and also Karṇa and Duḥśāsana, then very enraged Bhīma, he spoke harsh words.)
Remembering Duryodhana, the enemy, as well as Karṇa and Duḥśāsana, then the greatly enraged Bhīma spoke harsh words. (15-4-6)
अन्धस्य नृपतेः पुत्रा मया परिघबाहुना। नीता लोकममुं सर्वे नानाशस्त्रात्तजीविताः ॥१५-४-७॥
andhasya nṛpateḥ putrā mayā parighabāhunā। nītā lokam amuṃ sarve nānāśastrāt tajīvitāḥ॥15-4-7॥
[अन्धस्य (andhasya) - of the blind;, नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king;, पुत्रा (putrā) - sons;, मया (mayā) - by me;, परिघबाहुना (parighabāhunā) - with iron-mace-armed (with iron-club as arms);, नीता (nītā) - led (sent, caused to go);, लोकम् (lokam) - world;, अमुं (amuṃ) - that (the other, yonder);, सर्वे (sarve) - all;, नानाशस्त्रात् (nānāśastrāt) - by various weapons;, तजीविताः (tajīvitāḥ) - bereft of life (deprived of life);]
(Of the blind king's sons, by me, with iron-mace-armed (with mace as arms), led to that world all, by various weapons, bereft of life.)
By me, armed with the iron mace, all the sons of the blind king, deprived of life by various weapons, were sent to that other world. (15-4-7)
इमौ तौ परिघप्रख्यौ भुजौ मम दुरासदौ। ययोरन्तरमासाद्य धार्तराष्ट्राः क्षयं गताः ॥१५-४-८॥
imau tau parighaprakhyau bhujau mama durāsadau। yayorantaram āsādya dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ kṣayaṃ gatāḥ ॥15-4-8॥
[इमौ (imau) - these two; तौ (tau) - those two; परिघप्रख्यौ (parighaprakhyau) - like iron clubs; भुजौ (bhujau) - arms; मम (mama) - my; दुरासदौ (durāsadau) - difficult to approach; ययोः (yayor) - between which two; अन्तरम् (antaram) - the space; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; गताः (gatāḥ) - have reached;]
(These two, those two arms of mine like iron clubs, difficult to approach; having reached the space between which two, the sons of Dhritarashtra have reached destruction.)
These two arms of mine, like iron clubs and difficult to approach, are the very ones between which the sons of Dhritarashtra met their destruction. (15-4-8)
ताविमौ चन्दनेनाक्तौ वन्दनीयौ च मे भुजौ। याभ्यां दुर्योधनो नीतः क्षयं ससुतबान्धवः ॥१५-४-९॥
tāvimau candanenāktau vandanīyau ca me bhujau। yābhyāṁ duryodhano nītaḥ kṣayaṁ sasutabāndhavaḥ ॥15-4-9॥
[ताविमौ (tāvimau) - these two; चन्दनेन (candanenā) - with sandalwood; क्तौ (āktau) - anointed; वन्दनीयौ (vandanīyau) - worthy of reverence; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; भुजौ (bhujau) - arms; याभ्यां (yābhyāṁ) - by which two; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; नीतः (nītaḥ) - was led; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - to destruction; ससुतबान्धवः (sasuta-bāndhavaḥ) - together with sons and kinsmen;]
(These two, anointed with sandalwood, worthy of reverence, my arms; by which two Duryodhana was led to destruction with his sons and kinsmen.)
These two, my arms, anointed with sandalwood and worthy of reverence, are the very ones by which Duryodhana, along with his sons and kinsmen, was brought to destruction. (15-4-9)
एताश्चान्याश्च विविधाः शल्यभूता जनाधिपः। वृकोदरस्य ता वाचः श्रुत्वा निर्वेदमागमत् ॥१५-४-१०॥
etāś ca anyāś ca vividhāḥ śalyabhūtā janādhipaḥ। vṛkodarasya tā vācaḥ śrutvā nirvedam āgamat॥15-4-10॥
[एताः (etāḥ) - these (feminine plural); च (ca) - and; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - others (feminine plural); च (ca) - and; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; शल्यभूता (śalyabhūtā) - become like thorns (disturbing); जनाधिपः (janādhipaḥ) - the lord of the people (king); वृकोदरस्य (vṛkodarasya) - of Vṛkodara (Bhīma); ता (tā) - those (feminine plural, referring to 'vācaḥ'); वाचः (vācaḥ) - words (feminine plural); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; निर्वेदम् (nirvedam) - despondency; disenchantment; आगमत् (āgamat) - he reached; attained;]
(Both these and other various (words) which became like thorns, the lord of the people, having heard those words of Vṛkodara, reached despondency.)
Having heard both these and other various words of Vṛkodara, which had become like thorns, the king was overcome with despondency. (15-4-10)
सा च बुद्धिमती देवी कालपर्यायवेदिनी। गान्धारी सर्वधर्मज्ञा तान्यलीकानि शुश्रुवे ॥१५-४-११॥
sā ca buddhimatī devī kālaparyāyavedinī। gāndhārī sarvadharmajñā tānyalīkāni śuśruve ॥15-4-11॥
[सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; बुद्धिमती (buddhimatī) - intelligent; देवी (devī) - lady; कालपर्यायवेदिनी (kālaparyāyavedinī) - knower of successive times; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī (proper noun); सर्वधर्मज्ञा (sarvadharmajñā) - knower of all dharmas; तानि (tāni) - those; अलीकानि (alīkāni) - false (things); शुश्रुवे (śuśruve) - heard;]
(She and (the) intelligent lady, knower of successive times, Gāndhārī, knower of all dharmas, those false (things) heard.)
That wise lady, Gāndhārī, who knew the succession of times and was knower of all dharmas, heard those false things. (15-4-11)
ततः पञ्चदशे वर्षे समतीते नराधिपः। राजा निर्वेदमापेदे भीमवाग्बाणपीडितः ॥१५-४-१२॥
tataḥ pañcadaśe varṣe samatīte narādhipaḥ। rājā nirvedam āpede bhīma-vāk-bāṇa-pīḍitaḥ ॥15-4-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पञ्चदशे (pañcadaśe) - in the fifteenth; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; समतीते (samatīte) - having completely passed; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king (lord of men); राजा (rājā) - the king; निर्वेदम् (nirvedam) - disgust; आपेदे (āpede) - obtained; भीमवाग्बाणपीडितः (bhīma-vāk-bāṇa-pīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by the terrible arrow-like words;]
(Then, in the fifteenth year having completely passed, the lord of men, the king, who was afflicted by the terrible arrow-like words, obtained disgust.)
Then, after fifteen years had fully passed, the king, afflicted by the terrible arrow-like words, became filled with deep disgust. (15-4-12)
नान्वबुध्यत तद्राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। श्वेताश्वो वाथ कुन्ती वा द्रौपदी वा यशस्विनी ॥१५-४-१३॥
nānvabudhyata tadrājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। śvetāśvo vātha kuntī vā draupadī vā yaśasvinī ॥15-4-13॥
[न (na) - not; अन्वबुध्यत (anvabudhyata) - perceived; understood; तत् (tat) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; श्वेताश्वः (śvetāśvaḥ) - Śvetāśva; वा (vā) - or; अथ (atha) - or; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; वा (vā) - or; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; वा (vā) - or; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious one;]
(Not understood that king, son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira; Śvetāśva or, or Kuntī or Draupadī or the illustrious one.)
Neither the king, Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, nor Śvetāśva, nor Kuntī, nor Draupadī, the illustrious one, understood that. (15-4-13)
माद्रीपुत्रौ च भीमस्य चित्तज्ञावन्वमोदताम्। राज्ञस्तु चित्तं रक्षन्तौ नोचतुः किञ्चिदप्रियम् ॥१५-४-१४॥
mādrīputrau ca bhīmasya cittajñāvanvamōdatām। rājñastu cittaṃ rakṣantau nocatuḥ kiñcidapriyam ॥15-4-14॥
[माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - the two sons of Mādrī; च (ca) - and; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; चित्तज्ञौ (cittajñau) - knowers of the mind; अन्वमोदताम् (anvamōdatām) - rejoiced; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तु (tu) - but; चित्तम् (cittam) - the mind; रक्षन्तौ (rakṣantau) - protecting; नोचतुः (nocatuḥ) - did not say; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant;]
(The two sons of Mādrī and Bhīma, knowers of the mind, rejoiced. But protecting the mind of the king, they did not say anything unpleasant.)
The sons of Mādrī, along with Bhīma, who understood the mind, rejoiced. But, protecting the king's feelings, they did not say anything unpleasant. (15-4-14)
ततः समानयामास धृतराष्ट्रः सुहृज्जनम्। बाष्पसंदिग्धमत्यर्थमिदमाह वचो भृशम् ॥१५-४-१५॥
tataḥ samānayāmāsa dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ suhṛjjanam। bāṣpasaṃdigdhamatyarthamidamāha vacho bhṛśam ॥15-4-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समानयामास (samānayāmāsa) - caused to assemble; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; सुहृज्जनम् (suhṛjjanam) - friends and people; बाष्पसंदिग्धम् (bāṣpasaṃdigdham) - choked with tears; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; इदम् (idam) - this; आह (āha) - said; वचः (vachaḥ) - words; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - deeply;]
(Then Dhṛtarāṣṭra caused the friends and people to assemble. Choked with tears exceedingly, he said these words deeply.)
Then Dhṛtarāṣṭra summoned his friends and attendants. Deeply choked with excessive tears, he spoke these words. (15-4-15)
