स्पृश मां पाणिना भूयः परिष्वज च पाण्डव। जीवामीव हि संस्पर्शात्तव राजीवलोचन ॥१५-७-१॥
spṛśa māṁ pāṇinā bhūyaḥ pariṣvaja ca pāṇḍava। jīvāmīva hi saṁsparśāt tava rājīvalocana ॥15-7-1॥
[स्पृश (spṛśa) - touch; माम् (mām) - me; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (your) hand; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; परिष्वज (pariṣvaja) - embrace; च (ca) - and; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; जीवामि (jīvāmi) - I live; इव (iva) - as if; हि (hi) - indeed; संस्पर्शात् (saṁsparśāt) - from the touch; तव (tava) - your; राजीवलोचन (rājīvalocana) - O lotus-eyed;]
(Touch me with (your) hand again and embrace, O Pāṇḍava. I live as if indeed from the touch of your, O lotus-eyed.)
Touch me again with your hand and embrace me, O Pāṇḍava. O lotus-eyed, I feel as if I am revived by your touch. (15-7-1)
मूर्धानं च तवाघ्रातुमिच्छामि मनुजाधिप। पाणिभ्यां च परिस्प्रष्टुं प्राणा हि न जहुर्मम ॥१५-७-२॥
mūrdhānaṃ ca tavāghrātumicchāmi manujādhipa। pāṇibhyāṃ ca parisprasṭuṃ prāṇā hi na jahurmama ॥15-7-2॥
[मूर्धानं (mūrdhānam) - the head; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; आघ्रातुम् (āghrātum) - to smell; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men; पाणिभ्यां (pāṇibhyām) - with (my) hands; च (ca) - and; परिस्प्रष्टुं (parisprasṭum) - to touch; प्राणा (prāṇāḥ) - the life-forces; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; जहुर्मम (jahur mama) - have left me;]
(The head and your to smell I desire, O lord of men; with hands and to touch, the life-forces indeed not have left me.)
O lord of men, I wish to smell your head and to touch you with my hands; indeed, my life-forces have not yet left me. (15-7-2)
अष्टमो ह्यद्य कालोऽयमाहारस्य कृतस्य मे। येनाहं कुरुशार्दूल न शक्नोमि विचेष्टितुम् ॥१५-७-३॥
aṣṭamo hy adya kālo 'yam āhārasya kṛtasya me। yena ahaṃ kuruśārdūla na śaknomi viceṣṭitum ॥15-7-3॥
[अष्टमः (aṣṭamaḥ) - eighth; हि (hi) - indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अयम् (ayam) - this; आहारस्य (āhārasya) - of food; कृतस्य (kṛtasya) - having been taken; मे (me) - by me; येन (yena) - by which; अहम् (aham) - I; कुरुशार्दूल (kuruśārdūla) - O tiger among Kurus; न (na) - not; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; विचेष्टितुम् (viceṣṭitum) - to move;]
(Eighth indeed today time this of food having been taken by me; by which I, O tiger among Kurus, not am able to move.)
Indeed, this is the eighth time today since I have taken food, O tiger among the Kurus, by which I am unable to move. (15-7-3)
व्यायामश्चायमत्यर्थं कृतस्त्वामभियाचता। ततो ग्लानमनास्तात नष्टसञ्ज्ञ इवाभवम् ॥१५-७-४॥
vyāyāmaś cāyam atyarthaṃ kṛtas tvām abhi yācātā. tato glānam anās tāt naṣṭasañjña iva abhavam ॥15-7-4॥
[व्यायामः (vyāyāmaḥ) - effort; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was made; त्वाम् (tvām) - for you; अभियाचता (abhi yāc-atā) - by one earnestly requesting; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; ग्लानम् (glānam) - fatigue; अनाः (anāḥ) - breath; तात् (tāt) - O dear one; नष्टसञ्ज्ञः (naṣṭasañjñaḥ) - deprived of consciousness; इव (iva) - as if; अभवम् (abhavam) - I became;]
(Effort and this exceedingly was made for you by one earnestly requesting; therefore fatigue, breath, O dear one, deprived of consciousness as if I became.)
O dear one, this exceedingly great effort was made for you by one earnestly beseeching; therefore I became fatigued and breathless, as if bereft of consciousness. (15-7-4)
तवामृतसमस्पर्शं हस्तस्पर्शमिमं विभो। लब्ध्वा सञ्जीवितोऽस्मीति मन्ये कुरुकुलोद्वह ॥१५-७-५॥
tavāmṛtasamasparśaṃ hastasparśamimaṃ vibho। labdhvā sañjīvito'smīti manye kurukulodvaha ॥15-7-5॥
[तव (tava) - your; अमृतसम (amṛtasama) - equal to nectar; स्पर्शं (sparśam) - touch; हस्तस्पर्शम् (hastasparśam) - touch of (your) hand; इमं (imaṃ) - this; विभो (vibho) - O Lord; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; सञ्जीवितः (sañjīvitaḥ) - revived; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; मnye (manye) - I deem; कुरुकुलोद्वह (kurukulodvaha) - O best of the Kuru race;]
(Your touch equal to nectar, this touch of (your) hand, O Lord, having obtained, revived I am—thus I deem, O best of the Kuru race.)
O best of the Kuru race, I consider that, having received this touch of your hand which is like nectar, O Lord, I have been revived. (15-7-5)

evam-uktas-tu kaunteyaḥ pitrā jyeṣṭhena bhārata। pasparśa sarva-gātreṣu sauhārdāt taṃ śanaiḥ tadā ॥15-7-6॥

(Thus addressed, but Kaunteya, by the father, the elder, O Bhārata, touched on all limbs, out of affection, him, gently, then.)
O Bhārata, when thus addressed by his father, the elder, Kaunteya gently touched him on all his limbs out of affection. (15-7-6)
उपलभ्य ततः प्राणान्धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः। बाहुभ्यां सम्परिष्वज्य मूर्ध्न्याजिघ्रत पाण्डवम् ॥१५-७-७॥
upalabhya tataḥ prāṇān dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ। bāhubhyāṁ sampariṣvajya mūrdhny ājighrata pāṇḍavam॥15-7-7॥
[उपलभ्य (upalabhya) - having obtained; (gerund of upa-√labh); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; vital airs; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; (proper noun; nominative singular masculine); महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; lord of the earth; बाहुभ्यां (bāhubhyām) - with (his) two arms; सम्परिष्वज्य (sampariṣvajya) - having embraced; (gerund of sam-√pariṣvaj); मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; अजिघ्रत् (ājighrat) - he smelt; (3rd person singular perfect of ā-√ghrā; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava; (proper noun; accusative singular masculine, i.e., Yudhiṣṭhira);]
(Having obtained then life-breaths Dhṛtarāṣṭra the king with (his) two arms having embraced on the head smelt Pāṇḍava.)
Regaining his life, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra then embraced Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) with both arms and smelled his head. (15-7-7)
विदुरादयश्च ते सर्वे रुरुदुर्दुःखिता भृशम्। अतिदुःखाच्च राजानं नोचुः किञ्चन पाण्डवाः ॥१५-७-८॥
vidurādayaś ca te sarve rurudur duḥkhitā bhṛśam। atiduḥkhāc ca rājānaṃ nocuḥ kiñcana pāṇḍavāḥ॥15-7-8॥
[विदुरादयः (vidurādayaḥ) - Vidura and others; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; रुरुदुः (ruruduḥ) - wept; दुःखिताः (duḥkhitāḥ) - distressed; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; अतिदुःखात् (atiduḥkhāt) - from extreme sorrow; च (ca) - and; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; न (na) - not; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - spoke; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Vidura and others, they all wept, distressed intensely. And from extreme sorrow, the Pāṇḍavas did not speak anything to the king.)

गान्धारी त्वेव धर्मज्ञा मनसोद्वहती भृशम्। दुःखान्यवारयद्राजन्मैवमित्येव चाब्रवीत् ॥१५-७-९॥
gāndhārī tveva dharmajñā manasodvahantī bhṛśam। duḥkhānyavārayadraajanmaivamityeva cābravīt॥15-7-9॥

(Gāndhārī, but indeed, knower of dharma, bearing the mind intensely, sufferings restrained, O King, (do) not thus, thus indeed and she said.)
But Gāndhārī, who knew dharma, although bearing great distress of mind, restrained her sufferings, O King, and only said, "Do not act thus." (15-7-9)
इतरास्तु स्त्रियः सर्वाः कुन्त्या सह सुदुःखिताः। नेत्रैरागतविक्लेदैः परिवार्य स्थिताभवन् ॥१५-७-१०॥
itarās tu striyaḥ sarvāḥ kuntyā saha suduḥkhitāḥ। netrair āgatavikledaiḥ parivārya sthitābhavan ॥15-7-10॥
[इतराः (itarāḥ) - the others; (feminine plural nominative); तु (tu) - but; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; कुन्त्या (kuntyā) - with Kuntī; सह (saha) - together; with; सुदुःखिताः (suduḥkhitāḥ) - greatly distressed; very unhappy; नेत्रैः (netraiḥ) - with (their) eyes; आगतविक्लेदैः (āgatavikledaiḥ) - on which distress had come; come to be agitated; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - stood; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; were;]
("But all the other women, with Kuntī, being deeply afflicted, with eyes troubled by (their) distress, having surrounded (them), stood." (15-7-10))
"But all the other women, together with Kuntī, greatly distressed, with their eyes overcome by sorrow, gathered around and stood." (15-7-10)
अथाब्रवीत्पुनर्वाक्यं धृतराष्ट्रो युधिष्ठिरम्। अनुजानीहि मां राजंस्तापस्ये भरतर्षभ ॥१५-७-११॥
athābravīt punar vākyaṃ dhṛtaraṣṭro yudhiṣṭhiram। anujānīhi māṃ rājaṃs tāpasye bharatarṣabha ॥15-7-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke; पुनः (punar) - again; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtaraṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira; अनुजानीहि (anujānīhi) - permit; माम् (mām) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तापस्ये (tāpasye) - for austerities; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(Then he spoke again speech Dhritarashtra to Yudhishthira: Permit me, O king, for austerities, bull among the Bharatas.)
Then Dhritarashtra again spoke these words to Yudhishthira: "O king, bull among the Bharatas, permit me to undertake austerities." (15-7-11)
ग्लायते मे मनस्तात भूयो भूयः प्रजल्पतः। न मामतः परं पुत्र परिक्लेष्टुमिहार्हसि ॥१५-७-१२॥
glāyate me manas-tāta bhūyo bhūyaḥ prajalpataḥ। na mām-ataḥ paraṃ putra parikleṣṭum-iha arhasi ॥15-7-12॥
[ग्लायते (glāyate) - pines; मे (me) - of me; my; मनः (manas) - mind; तात (tāta) - O dear one; father; son; भूयः भूयः (bhūyaḥ bhūyaḥ) - again and again; प्रजल्पतः (prajalpataḥ) - speaking; न (na) - not; मामतः (mām-ataḥ) - to me, from me; परं (paraṃ) - further; more; पुत्र (putra) - O son; परिक्लेष्टुम् (parikleṣṭum) - to trouble; to pain; इह (iha) - here; in this matter; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you should;]
(My mind, O dear one, pines again and again as you speak. You should not trouble me further in this matter, O son.)
O son, my mind is pained again and again as you continue speaking. You should not trouble me further about this.
तस्मिंस्तु कौरवेन्द्रे तं तथा ब्रुवति पाण्डवम्। सर्वेषामवरोधानामार्तनादो महानभूत् ॥१५-७-१३॥
tasmintu kauravendre taṃ tathā bruvati pāṇḍavam। sarveṣām avarodhānām ārtanādo mahān abhūt ॥15-7-13॥

(But when, in that Kaurava king, he was thus speaking to Pāṇḍava, a great cry of distress arose among all the women.)
But as the Kaurava king was thus speaking to Pāṇḍava, a great wail of distress arose from all the women. (15-7-13)
दृष्ट्वा कृशं विवर्णं च राजानमतथोचितम्। उपवासपरिश्रान्तं त्वगस्थिपरिवारितम् ॥१५-७-१४॥
dṛṣṭvā kṛśaṃ vivarṇaṃ ca rājānam atathocitam। upavāsa-pariśrāntaṃ tvag-asthi-parivāritam ॥15-7-14॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कृशं (kṛśam) - emaciated; विवर्णं (vivarṇam) - discolored; च (ca) - and; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अथोचितम् (atathocitam) - not as appropriate; उपवासपरिश्रान्तं (upavāsa-pariśrāntam) - exhausted from fasting; त्वगस्थिपरिवारितम् (tvag-asthi-parivāritam) - enclosed with skin and bones;]
(Having seen emaciated, discolored and the king, not as appropriate, exhausted from fasting, enclosed with skin and bones.)
Seeing the king, emaciated, discolored, not as he ought to be, exhausted from fasting, and nothing but skin and bones. (15-7-14)
धर्मपुत्रः स पितरं परिष्वज्य महाभुजः। शोकजं बाष्पमुत्सृज्य पुनर्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१५-७-१५॥
dharmaputraḥ sa pitaraṃ pariṣvajya mahābhujaḥ। śokajaṃ bāṣpam utsṛjya punar vacanam abravīt॥15-7-15॥
[धर्मपुत्रः (dharmaputraḥ) - son of Dharma; Yudhiṣṭhira; स (sa) - he; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - embracing; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - mighty-armed; शोकजं (śokajaṃ) - born of grief; बाष्पम् (bāṣpam) - tears; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having let go; पुनः (punar) - again; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) spoke;]
(The son of Dharma, he, embracing his father, the mighty-armed, having shed tears born of grief, again spoke words.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma, embraced his father, composed himself after shedding tears of grief, and once again spoke.
न कामये नरश्रेष्ठ जीवितं पृथिवीं तथा। यथा तव प्रियं राजंश्चिकीर्षामि परन्तप ॥१५-७-१६॥
na kāmaye naraśreṣṭha jīvitaṃ pṛthivīṃ tathā। yathā tava priyaṃ rājaṃścikīrṣāmi parantapa ॥15-7-16॥
[न (na) - not; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; जीवितं (jīvitaṃ) - life; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; तथा (tathā) - thus; also; यथा (yathā) - as; in the way that; तव (tava) - your; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; what is pleasing; राजन् (rājan) - O king; चिकीर्षामि (cikīrṣāmi) - I wish to do; I intend to act; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(Not I desire, O best of men, life, nor earth also; as your dear, O king, I wish to do, O scorcher of foes.)
O best of men, I do not desire life nor the earth; rather, O king, I wish to do that which is dear to you, O subduer of foes. (15-7-16)
यदि त्वहमनुग्राह्यो भवतो दयितोऽपि वा। क्रियतां तावदाहारस्ततो वेत्स्यामहे वयम् ॥१५-७-१७॥
yadi tv aham anugrāhyaḥ bhavataḥ dayitaḥ api vā. kriyatām tāvad āhāraḥ tataḥ vetsyāmahe vayam ॥15-7-17॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुग्राह्यः (anugrāhyaḥ) - worthy of favor; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - by you; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - beloved; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let be made; तावत् (tāvat) - then; आहारः (āhāraḥ) - food; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वे्त्स्यामहे (vetsyāmahe) - we shall know; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(If I am worthy of favor by you or beloved even, let food be prepared first; then we shall know.)
If I am either worthy of your favor or your beloved, then let food be prepared first; afterwards, we shall know. (15-7-17)
ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजा धर्मपुत्रं स पार्थिवः। अनुज्ञातस्त्वया पुत्र भुञ्जीयामिति कामये ॥१५-७-१८॥
tato'bravīn mahā-tejā dharma-putraṃ sa pārthivaḥ. anujñātaḥ tvayā putra bhuñjīyām iti kāmaye ॥15-7-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; महातेजाः (mahā-tejāḥ) - greatly radiant; धर्मपुत्रम् (dharma-putram) - to the son of Dharma; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुत्र (putra) - son; भुञ्जीयाम् (bhuñjīyām) - may I enjoy; इति (iti) - thus; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire;]
(Then the greatly radiant king said to the son of Dharma: 'Permitted by you, O son, may I enjoy, thus I desire.' (15-7-18))
Thereupon, the illustrious king said to the son of Dharma: 'I wish to enjoy (the kingdom), if you permit me, O son.' (15-7-18)
इति ब्रुवति राजेन्द्रे धृतराष्ट्रे युधिष्ठिरम्। ऋषिः सत्यवतीपुत्रो व्यासोऽभ्येत्य वचोऽब्रवीत् ॥१५-७-१९॥

While Dhṛtarāṣṭra was speaking to Yudhiṣṭhira, Vyāsa, the sage and son of Satyavatī, approached and spoke these words. (15-7-19)
