न मां प्रीणयते राज्यं त्वय्येवं दुःखिते नृप। धिङ्मामस्तु सुदुर्बुद्धिं राज्यसक्तं प्रमादिनम् ॥१५-६-१॥
na māṃ prīṇayate rājyaṃ tvayyevaṃ duḥkhite nṛpa। dhiṅmāmastu sudurbuddhiṃ rājyasaktaṃ pramādinam ॥15-6-1॥
[न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; प्रीणयते (prīṇayate) - pleases; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; दुःखिते (duḥkhite) - being afflicted with sorrow; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; धिङ्माम् (dhiṅmām) - fie upon me; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; सुदुर्बुद्धिं (sudurbuddhim) - very evil-minded; राज्यसक्तं (rājyasaktam) - attached to kingdom; प्रमादिनम् (pramādinam) - negligent;]
(Not me pleases kingdom in you thus being afflicted with sorrow, O king. Fie upon me, let it be, very evil-minded, attached to kingdom, negligent.)
O king, when you are thus afflicted with sorrow, the kingdom does not please me. Fie upon me—let me, so very evil-minded, attached to the kingdom, and negligent, be condemned. (15-6-1)
योऽहं भवन्तं दुःखार्तमुपवासकृशं नृप। यताहारं क्षितिशयं नाविन्दं भ्रातृभिः सह ॥१५-६-२॥
yo'haṁ bhavantaṁ duḥkhārtam-upavāsa-kṛśaṁ nṛpa। yatāhāraṁ kṣiti-śayaṁ nāvindaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥15-6-2॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you; दुःखार्तम् (duḥkhārtam) - afflicted by suffering; उपवासकृशम् (upavāsa-kṛśam) - emaciated by fasting; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; यताहारम् (yatahāram) - of restrained food; क्षितिशयम् (kṣiti-śayam) - lying upon the ground; न (na) - not; अविन्दम् (avindam) - I found; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together;]
(Who I you afflicted by suffering emaciated by fasting O king, of restrained food lying upon the ground, not I found together with brothers.)
O king, I did not find you, who are afflicted by suffering, emaciated by fasting, subsisting on little food, lying upon the ground, together with your brothers. (15-6-2)
अहोऽस्मि वञ्चितो मूढो भवता गूढबुद्धिना। विश्वासयित्वा पूर्वं मां यदिदं दुःखमश्नुथाः ॥१५-६-३॥
aho'smi vañcito mūḍho bhavatā gūḍhabuddhinā। viśvāsayitvā pūrvaṃ māṃ yadidaṃ duḥkham aśnuthāḥ ॥15-6-3॥
[अहो (aho) - oh; ऽस्मि ('asmi) - I am; वञ्चितः (vañcitaḥ) - deceived; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - fool; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; गूढबुद्धिना (gūḍhabuddhinā) - with hidden intelligence; विश्वासयित्वा (viśvāsayitvā) - having caused (me) to trust; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; माम् (mām) - me; यत् (yat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; अश्नुथाः (aśnuthāḥ) - you experience;]
(Oh, I am deceived, (a) fool, by you with hidden intelligence. Having made me trust formerly, me, that this suffering you experience.)
Oh, I have been deceived, made a fool by you with hidden intelligence. Previously you made me trust you, so that now you experience this suffering. (15-6-3)
किं मे राज्येन भोगैर्वा किं यज्ञैः किं सुखेन वा। यस्य मे त्वं महीपाल दुःखान्येतान्यवाप्तवान् ॥१५-६-४॥
kiṃ me rājyena bhogair vā kiṃ yajñaiḥ kiṃ sukhena vā। yasya me tvaṃ mahīpāla duḥkhāni etāni avāptavān ॥15-6-4॥
[किं (kiṃ) - what; मे (me) - to me; राज्येन (rājyena) - by kingdom; भोगैः (bhogaiḥ) - by enjoyments; वा (vā) - or; किं (kiṃ) - what; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; किं (kiṃ) - what; सुखेन (sukhena) - by happiness; वा (vā) - or; यस्यमे (yasya me) - of whom to me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O ruler of the earth; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; एतानि (etāni) - these; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - (you) have obtained;]
(What to me by kingdom, by enjoyments, or what by sacrifices, what by happiness or, of whom to me you, O ruler of the earth, these sufferings you have obtained.)
What use to me is kingship, enjoyments, or even sacrifices and happiness, O ruler of the earth, when you—who are everything to me—have attained these sufferings? (15-6-4)
पीडितं चापि जानामि राज्यमात्मानमेव च। अनेन वचसा तुभ्यं दुःखितस्य जनेश्वर ॥१५-६-५॥
pīḍitaṃ cāpi jānāmi rājyam ātmānam eva ca। anena vacasā tubhyaṃ duḥkhitasya janeśvara ॥15-6-5॥
[पीडितं (pīḍitam) - afflicted; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अनेन (anena) - by this; वचसा (vacasā) - by word; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - to you; दुःखितस्य (duḥkhitasya) - of the sorrowful; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of men;]
(Afflicted and also I know the kingdom, self indeed and; by this word to you of the sorrowful, O lord of men.)
O lord of men, I know both the kingdom and myself have been afflicted, and by these words to you, who are sorrowful. (15-6-5)
भवान्पिता भवान्माता भवान्नः परमो गुरुः। भवता विप्रहीणा हि क्व नु तिष्ठामहे वयम् ॥१५-६-६॥
bhavān pitā bhavān mātā bhavān naḥ paramo guruḥ। bhavatā vipra-hīṇā hi kva nu tiṣṭhāmahe vayam ॥15-6-6॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (respectful pronoun); पिता (pitā) - father; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (respectful pronoun); माता (mātā) - mother; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (respectful pronoun); नः (naḥ) - our; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; विप्रहीणा (vipra-hīṇā) - deprived (hīṇā) of (vipra=you); हि (hi) - indeed; क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; (emphatic particle); तिष्ठामहे (tiṣṭhāmahe) - do we remain; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(You father, you mother, you our supreme teacher. By you deprived indeed where indeed do we remain we (i.e., where can we exist).)
You are the father, you are the mother, you are our supreme teacher. Deprived of you, indeed, where indeed can we exist? (15-6-6)
औरसो भवतः पुत्रो युयुत्सुर्नृपसत्तम। अस्तु राजा महाराज यं चान्यं मन्यते भवान् ॥१५-६-७॥
auraso bhavataḥ putro yuyutsur nṛpasattama। astu rājā mahārāja yaṃ ca anyaṃ manyate bhavān॥15-6-7॥
[औरसः (aurasaḥ) - born of the body; legitimate (son); भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; of you; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - desiring to fight; wishing to do battle; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; may (he) be; राजा (rājā) - king; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; यम् (yam) - whom; च (ca) - and; अन्यम् (anyam) - any other; another; मन्यते (manyate) - (he) regards; (he) considers; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (respectful address);]
(O best of kings, your legitimate son, desiring to fight. Let him be king, O great king, whom and any other whom you consider.)
O best of kings, your own legitimate son who desires to fight—let him, and whomever else you, O great king, consider, be king. (15-6-7)
अहं वनं गमिष्यामि भवान्राज्यं प्रशास्त्विदम्। न मामयशसा दग्धं भूयस्त्वं दग्धुमर्हसि ॥१५-६-८॥
ahaṃ vanaṃ gamiṣyāmi bhavān rājyaṃ praśāstv idam। na mām ayaśasā dagdhaṃ bhūyas tvaṃ dagdhum arhasi॥15-6-8॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - shall go; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; प्रशास्तु (praśāstu) - let govern; इदम् (idam) - this; न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; अयशसा (ayaśasā) - with disgrace; दग्धम् (dagdham) - burnt; भूयः (bhūyas) - further; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; दग्धुम् (dagdhum) - to burn; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought;]
(I forest shall go, you the kingdom let govern this. Not me with disgrace burnt further you to burn ought.)
I shall go to the forest; you should govern this kingdom. You ought not to burn me further with disgrace when I am already consumed by dishonor. (15-6-8)
नाहं राजा भवान्राजा भवता परवानहम्। कथं गुरुं त्वां धर्मज्ञमनुज्ञातुमिहोत्सहे ॥१५-६-९॥
nāhaṃ rājā bhavān rājā bhavatā paravān aham। kathaṃ guruṃ tvāṃ dharma-jñam anujñātum iha utsahe ॥15-6-9॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; राजा (rājā) - king; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); राजा (rājā) - king; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; परवान् (paravān) - dependent (on another); अहम् (aham) - I; कथम् (katham) - how; गुरुम् (gurum) - guru; teacher; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; धर्मज्ञम् (dharma-jñam) - knower of dharma; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; इह (iha) - here; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able, do I have the strength;]
(Not I king, you king, by you dependent I. How guru you, knower of dharma, to permit here am I able.)
I am not king; you are king; by you, I am dependent. How can I, here, permit you—my guru and knower of dharma? (15-6-9)
न मन्युर्हृदि नः कश्चिद्दुर्योधनकृतेऽनघ। भवितव्यं तथा तद्धि वयं ते चैव मोहिताः ॥१५-६-१०॥
na manyur hṛdi naḥ kaścid duryodhana-kṛte 'nagha। bhavitavyaṃ tathā tad dhi vayaṃ te caiva mohitāḥ॥15-6-10॥
[न (na) - not; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (our) hearts; नः (naḥ) - our; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; दुर्योधनकृते (duryodhana-kṛte) - for Duryodhana's sake; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; भवितव्यम् (bhavitavyam) - fate; तथा (tathā) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; वयम् (vayam) - we; ते (te) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मोहिताः (mohitāḥ) - deluded;]
(Not anger in (our) hearts (of) us anyone for Duryodhana's sake, O sinless one; fate (acts) thus, that indeed we and you also (are) deluded.)
O sinless one, none of us harbors any anger in our hearts because of Duryodhana; it is fate indeed—thus, both we and you have been deluded. (15-6-10)
वयं हि पुत्रा भवतो यथा दुर्योधनादयः। गान्धारी चैव कुन्ती च निर्विशेषे मते मम ॥१५-६-११॥
vayaṁ hi putrā bhavato yathā duryodhanādayaḥ। gāndhārī caiva kuntī ca nirviśeṣe mate mama॥15-6-11॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; यथा (yathā) - just as; दुर्योधनादयः (duryodhanādayaḥ) - Duryodhana and others; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; च (ca) - and; निर्विशेषे (nirviśeṣe) - without distinction; मते (mate) - in the opinion; मम (mama) - my;]
(We indeed are sons of you, just as Duryodhana and others; Gāndhārī and Kuntī, too, in my opinion, are without distinction.)
We are indeed your sons, just as Duryodhana and the others are; in my view, Gāndhārī and Kuntī, too, stand without distinction. (15-6-11)
स मां त्वं यदि राजेन्द्र परित्यज्य गमिष्यसि। पृष्ठतस्त्वानुयास्यामि सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥१५-६-१२॥
sa māṃ tvaṃ yadi rājeṃdra parityajya gamiṣyasi। pṛṣṭhatas tvānuyāsyāmi satyena ātmānam ālabhe ॥15-6-12॥
[स (sa) - he; (in this context, 'I';; मां (māṃ) - me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; यदि (yadi) - if; राजेन्द्र (rājeṃdra) - O king; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having deserted; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhatas) - behind (from behind); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुयास्यामि (anuyāsyāmi) - I will follow; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; आलभे (ālabhe) - I take a vow;]
(If you, O king, having deserted me, will go, I will follow you from behind; by truth I take (bind) myself (to this vow).)
If you, O king, abandon me and go, then I will follow you from behind; I bind myself to this vow with truth. (15-6-12)
इयं हि वसुसम्पूर्णा मही सागरमेखला। भवता विप्रहीणस्य न मे प्रीतिकरी भवेत् ॥१५-६-१३॥
iyaṃ hi vasusampūrṇā mahī sāgaramekhalā। bhavatā viprahīṇasya na me prītikarī bhavet ॥15-6-13॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this (feminine); हि (hi) - indeed; वसुसम्पूर्णा (vasusampūrṇā) - filled with riches; मही (mahī) - earth; सागरमेखला (sāgaramekhalā) - girdled by the ocean; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; विप्रहीणस्य (viprahīṇasya) - bereft of the brāhmaṇa; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; प्रीतिकरी (prītikarī) - pleasing; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(This indeed filled-with-riches earth girdled by the ocean, by you, bereft of the brāhmaṇa, not to me pleasing would be.)
This earth, though indeed filled with riches and girdled by the ocean, if bereft of the brāhmaṇa by you, would not be pleasing to me. (15-6-13)
भवदीयमिदं सर्वं शिरसा त्वां प्रसादये। त्वदधीनाः स्म राजेन्द्र व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१५-६-१४॥
bhavadīyam idaṁ sarvaṁ śirasā tvāṁ prasādaye। tvadadhīnāḥ sma rājendra vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ॥15-6-14॥
[भवदीयम् (bhavadīyam) - belonging to you; इदं (idaṁ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (my) head; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; प्रसादये (prasādaye) - (I) entreat; (I) supplicate; त्वदधीनाः (tvadadhīnāḥ) - subject to you; dependent on you; स्म (sma) - indeed; truly; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; व्येतु (vyetu) - let pass; let be gone; ते (te) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - of mind; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - fever; affliction;]
(Belonging to you this all with (my) head to you (I) entreat. Subject to you indeed O king let pass your of mind fever.)
O King, all this belongs to you; with my head (bowed), I entreat you. We are indeed subject to you—may the affliction of your mind pass away. (15-6-14)
भवितव्यमनुप्राप्तं मन्ये त्वां तज्जनाधिप। दिष्ट्या शुश्रूषमाणस्त्वां मोक्ष्यामि मनसो ज्वरम् ॥१५-६-१५॥
bhavitavyam anuprāptaṃ manye tvāṃ tajjanādhipa। diṣṭyā śuśrūṣamāṇas tvāṃ mokṣyāmi manaso jvaram ॥15-6-15॥
[भवितव्यम् (bhavitavyam) - what is to happen; अनुप्राप्तम् (anuprāptam) - arrived; मन्ये (manye) - I think; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; तत्-जन-अधिप (tat-jana-adhipa) - lord of those people; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; शुश्रूषमाणः (śuśrūṣamāṇaḥ) - serving (you); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मोक्ष्यामि (mokṣyāmi) - I shall release; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; ज्वरम् (jvaram) - affliction;]
(What is to happen has arrived, I think you, lord of those people. By fortune, serving you, I shall release the affliction of (my) mind.)
I think what was destined has come to pass, and you, O lord of those people, have arrived. By good fortune, as I serve you, I shall free my mind of its distress. (15-6-15)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

तापस्ये मे मनस्तात वर्तते कुरुनन्दन। उचितं हि कुलेऽस्माकमरण्यगमनं प्रभो ॥१५-६-१६॥
tāpasyē me manastāta vartatē kurunandana। ucitaṃ hi kulē'smākamaraṇyagamanaṃ prabho ॥15-6-16॥
[तापस्ये (tāpasyē) - in austerity; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तात (tāta) - dear father; वर्तते (vartatē) - dwells; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; उचितं (ucitaṃ) - proper; हि (hi) - indeed; कुले (kulē) - in the lineage; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; अरण्यगमनम् (araṇyagamanam) - going to the forest; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(In austerity my mind, dear father, dwells, O joy of the Kurus. Proper indeed in the lineage of us is going to the forest, O lord.)
My mind, dear father, dwells on austerity, O joy of the Kurus. Indeed, it is proper for our lineage that we go to the forest, O lord. (15-6-16)
चिरमस्म्युषितः पुत्र चिरं शुश्रूषितस्त्वया। वृद्धं मामभ्यनुज्ञातुं त्वमर्हसि जनाधिप ॥१५-६-१७॥
ciramasmyuṣitaḥ putra ciraṁ śuśrūṣitastvayā। vṛddhaṁ māmabhyanujñātuṁ tvamarhasi janādhipa ॥15-6-17॥
[चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; अस् (asmi) - I am; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - (having) dwelt; पुत्र (putra) - son; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; शुश्रूषितः (śuśrūṣitaḥ) - (have been) served; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वृद्धम् (vṛddham) - aged; माम् (mām) - me; अभ्यनुज्ञातुम् (abhyanujñātum) - to allow; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy (should do); जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people;]
(For a long time I have dwelt, son, for a long time I have been served by you. Aged me to allow you should, O lord of people.)
O son, I have lived a long time and have long been cared for by you. You should now permit me, who am old, O lord of the people. (15-6-17)

इत्युक्त्वा धर्मराजानं वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिम्। उवाच वचनं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥१५-६-१८॥
ity uktvā dharmarājānaṃ vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjalim। uvāca vacanaṃ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro’mbikāsutaḥ ॥15-6-18॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; धर्मराजानं (dharmarājānam) - to Dharmarāja (king of dharma); वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; कृताञ्जलिम् (kṛtāñjalim) - with joined palms; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वचनं (vacanam) - words; राजा (rājā) - king; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; अम्बिकासुतः (ambikāsutaḥ) - the son of Ambikā;]

Having thus spoken to Dharmarāja, trembling and with joined palms, the king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, son of Ambikā, spoke as follows. (15-6-18)
सञ्जयं च महामात्रं कृपं चापि महारथम्। अनुनेतुमिहेच्छामि भवद्भिः पृथिवीपतिम् ॥१५-६-१९॥
sañjayaṃ ca mahāmātraṃ kṛpaṃ cāpi mahā-ratham। anunetum iha icchāmi bhavadbhiḥ pṛthivī-patim ॥15-6-19॥
[सञ्जयं (sañjayaṃ) - Sañjaya (proper noun); च (ca) - and; महामात्रं (mahāmātram) - great minister; कृपं (kṛpam) - Kṛpa (proper noun); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; महारथम् (mahā-ratham) - great warrior; अनुनेतुम् (anunetum) - to pacify; इह (iha) - here; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (respectful plural); पृथिवीपतिम् (pṛthivī-patim) - the lord of the earth (king);]
(Sañjaya and the great minister, Kṛpa and also the great warrior—to pacify here I wish, by you, the lord of the earth.)
I wish, with your help, to bring Sañjaya the minister and Kṛpa the great charioteer here, to pacify the king, the lord of the earth. (15-6-19)
ग्लायते मे मनो हीदं मुखं च परिशुष्यति। वयसा च प्रकृष्टेन वाग्व्यायामेन चैव हि ॥१५-६-२०॥
glāyate me mano hīdaṃ mukhaṃ ca pariśuṣyati। vayasā ca prakṛṣṭena vāgvyāyāmena caiva hi ॥15-6-20॥
[ग्लायते (glāyate) - withers; declines; मे (me) - my; मनो (mano) - mind; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मुखं (mukhaṃ) - mouth; च (ca) - and; परिशुष्यति (pariśuṣyati) - becomes parched; dries up; वयसा (vayasā) - by age; च (ca) - and; प्रकृष्टेन (prakṛṣṭena) - by excess; by great (degree); वाग्व्यायामेन (vāg-vyāyāmena) - by exertion of speech; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - truly;]
(Withers my mind indeed, this mouth also becomes parched, by age and by excess, by exertion of speech also indeed truly.)
My mind indeed withers, and this mouth also becomes parched, truly due to advanced age and great exertion of speech. (15-6-20)
इत्युक्त्वा स तु धर्मात्मा वृद्धो राजा कुरूद्वहः। गान्धारीं शिश्रिये धीमान्सहसैव गतासुवत् ॥१५-६-२१॥
ity uktvā sa tu dharmātmā vṛddho rājā kurūd-vahaḥ। gāndhārīṁ śiśriye dhīmān sahasaiva gatāsuvat ॥15-6-21॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; राजा (rājā) - king; कुरूद्वहः (kurūdvahaḥ) - the chief of the Kurus; गान्धारीम् (gāndhārīm) - Gandhari; शिश्रिये (śiśriye) - approached; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; एव (eva) - indeed; गतासुवत् (gatāsuvat) - as one whose life had departed;]
(Thus having spoken, he but righteous-souled, aged king, chief of the Kurus, Gandhari he approached, wise, suddenly indeed, as one whose life had departed.)
Thus, having spoken these words, the righteous-souled, aged king, the chief of the Kurus, he, wise, suddenly approached Gandhari as if his life had departed. (15-6-21)
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तथासीनं निश्चेष्टं कुरुपार्थिवम्। आर्तिं राजा ययौ तूर्णं कौन्तेयः परवीरहा ॥१५-६-२२॥
taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā tathāsīnaṃ niśceṣṭaṃ kurupārthivam। ārtiṃ rājā yayau tūrṇaṃ kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā ॥15-6-22॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - thus; आसीनं (āsīnam) - seated; निश्चेष्टं (niśceṣṭam) - motionless; कुरुपार्थिवम् (kurupārthivam) - the Kuru king; आर्तिं (ārtiṃ) - distress; राजा (rājā) - king; ययौ (yayau) - attained; तूर्णं (tūrṇam) - swiftly; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - the son of Kunti; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes;]
(But having seen him thus seated motionless, the Kuru king, distress, the king attained swiftly, the son of Kunti, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
But having seen the Kuru king seated there motionless in that way, Kaunteya, the destroyer of enemy heroes, swiftly became distressed. (15-6-22)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
यस्य नागसहस्रेण दशसङ्ख्येन वै बलम्। सोऽयं नारीमुपाश्रित्य शेते राजा गतासुवत् ॥१५-६-२३॥
yasya nāga-sahasreṇa daśa-saṅkhyena vai balam। saḥ ayaṁ nārīm upāśritya śete rājā gata-asu-vat॥15-6-23॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; नागसहस्रेण (nāga-sahasreṇa) - with a thousand elephants; दशसङ्ख्येन (daśa-saṅkhyena) - with the number ten (i.e., ten thousand); वै (vai) - indeed; बलम् (balam) - army; power; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayaṁ) - this; नारीम् (nārīm) - woman; उपाश्रित्य (upāśritya) - having resorted to; शेते (śete) - lies; राजा (rājā) - king; गतासुवत् (gata-asu-vat) - like one who has lost life;]
(Whose with a thousand elephants with the number ten indeed army; he this having resorted to a woman lies king like one who has lost life;)
He whose army, indeed, comprises a thousand elephants and ten thousand (soldiers), this king, having resorted to a woman, now lies as if lifeless. (15-6-23)
आयसी प्रतिमा येन भीमसेनस्य वै पुरा। चूर्णीकृता बलवता स बलार्थी श्रितः स्त्रियम् ॥१५-६-२४॥
āyasī pratima yena bhīmasenasya vai purā। cūrṇīkṛtā balavatā sa balārthī śritaḥ striyam ॥15-6-24॥
[आयसी (āyasī) - iron; प्रतिमा (pratimā) - statue; येन (yena) - by whom; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; चूर्णीकृता (cūrṇīkṛtā) - crushed; बलवता (balavatā) - by the mighty; स (sa) - he; बलार्थी (balārthī) - seeker of strength; श्रितः (śritaḥ) - has taken refuge; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman; ॥१५-६-२४॥ (॥15-6-24॥) - ;]
(Iron statue by whom of Bhīmasena indeed formerly crushed by the mighty, he seeker of strength has taken refuge in woman.)
He who formerly crushed the iron statue of Bhīmasena, indeed by might, now seeking strength, has taken refuge in a woman. (15-6-24)
धिगस्तु मामधर्मज्ञं धिग्बुद्धिं धिक्च मे श्रुतम्। यत्कृते पृथिवीपालः शेतेऽयमतथोचितः ॥१५-६-२५॥
dhig astu mām adharma-jñam dhig buddhiṁ dhik ca me śrutam। yat-kṛte pṛthivī-pālaḥ śete ayam atatho-citaḥ॥15-6-25॥
[धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; माम् (mām) - me; अधर्मज्ञम् (adharma-jñam) - one who knows unrighteousness; धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; बुद्धिं (buddhiṁ) - intellect; धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - learning; यत्-कृते (yat-kṛte) - for whose sake; पृथिवीपालः (pṛthivī-pālaḥ) - protector of the earth; शेत (śete) - lies; अयम् (ayam) - this; अथ (atha) - thus; उचितः (ucitaḥ) - proper;]
(Condemnation let it be me, knower of unrighteousness; condemnation intellect, condemnation and my learning. For whose sake, protector of the earth this lies thus not proper.)
Shame be upon me, a knower of unrighteousness; shame upon my intellect and upon my learning, for whose sake this protector of the earth now lies thus, not as is fitting. (15-6-25)
अहमप्युपवत्स्यामि यथैवायं गुरुर्मम। यदि राजा न भुङ्क्तेऽयं गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१५-६-२६॥
aham apy upavatsyāmi yathaiva ayaṁ gurur mama। yadi rājā na bhuṅkte ayaṁ gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī ॥15-6-26॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; उपवत्स्यामि (upavatsyāmi) - will fast; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; गुरुः (guruḥ) - elder; मम (mama) - of mine; यदि (yadi) - if; राजा (rājā) - the king; न (na) - does not; भुङ्क्ते (bhuṅkte) - eat; अयम् (ayam) - this; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - glorious;]
(I also will fast just as indeed this elder of mine, if the king does not eat, this Gandhari and glorious.)
I too will fast just as this elder of mine does, if the king does not eat, as will this Gandhari, the glorious woman. (15-6-26)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततोऽस्य पाणिना राजा जलशीतेन पाण्डवः। उरो मुखं च शनकैः पर्यमार्जत धर्मवित् ॥१५-६-२७॥
tato'sya pāṇinā rājā jalaśītena pāṇḍavaḥ। uro mukhaṃ ca śanakaiḥ paryamārjata dharmavit॥15-6-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (his) hand; राजा (rājā) - king; जलशीतेन (jalaśītena) - with cold water; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; उरः (uraḥ) - chest; मुखं (mukhaṃ) - face; च (ca) - and; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - gently; पऱ्यमार्जत् (paryamārjat) - wiped; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma;]
(Then, his with (his) hand the king with cold water, the son of Pāṇḍu wiped chest, face and gently, knower of dharma.)
Then the king, the son of Pāṇḍu, who knew dharma, gently wiped his chest and face with cold water with his hand. (15-6-27)
तेन रत्नौषधिमता पुण्येन च सुगन्धिना। पाणिस्पर्शेन राज्ञस्तु राजा सञ्ज्ञामवाप ह ॥१५-६-२८॥
tena ratnauṣadhimatā puṇyena ca sugandhinā। pāṇisparśena rājñas tu rājā sañjñām avāpa ha ॥15-6-28॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; रत्नौषधिमता (ratnauṣadhimatā) - endowed with gem-medicines; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by the meritorious; च (ca) - and; सुगन्धिना (sugandhinā) - by the fragrant; पाणिस्पर्शेन (pāṇisparśena) - by the touch of the hand; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - the king; सञ्ज्ञाम् (sañjñām) - consciousness; अवाप (avāpa) - obtained; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(By that one endowed with gem-medicines, meritorious and fragrant, by the touch of the hand of the king, but the king indeed obtained consciousness.)
By the touch of the meritorious and fragrant hand endowed with gem-medicines, the king indeed regained consciousness. (15-6-28)
