yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho yadāha kurunandanaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭro mahātmā tvāṃ tat kuruṣvāvicārayan ॥15-8-1॥

अयं हि वृद्धो नृपतिर्हतपुत्रो विशेषतः। नेदं कृच्छ्रं चिरतरं सहेदिति मतिर्मम ॥१५-८-२॥
ayaṁ hi vṛddho nṛpatirhataputro viśeṣataḥ। nedaṁ kṛcchraṁ cirataraṁ sahediti matirmama॥15-8-2॥

(This indeed aged king, bereft of his son, especially, not this affliction for a long time could endure—thus my thought.)

गान्धारी च महाभागा प्राज्ञा करुणवेदिनी। पुत्रशोकं महाराज धैर्येणोद्वहते भृशम् ॥१५-८-३॥
gāndhārī ca mahābhāgā prājñā karuṇavedinī. putraśokaṃ mahārāja dhairyeṇodvahate bhṛśam ॥15-8-3॥

अहमप्येतदेव त्वां ब्रवीमि कुरु मे वचः। अनुज्ञां लभतां राजा मा वृथेह मरिष्यति ॥१५-८-४॥
aham apy etad eva tvāṁ bravīmi kuru me vacaḥ। anujñāṁ labhatāṁ rājā mā vṛtheha mariṣyati॥15-8-4॥

राजर्षीणां पुराणानामनुयातु गतिं नृपः। राजर्षीणां हि सर्वेषामन्ते वनमुपाश्रयः ॥१५-८-५॥
rājarṣīṇāṃ purāṇānām-anuyātu gatiṃ nṛpaḥ। rājarṣīṇāṃ hi sarveṣām-ante vanam-upāśrayaḥ॥15-8-5॥

अहं तु पुत्रो भगवान्पिता राजा गुरुश्च मे। निदेशवर्ती च पितुः पुत्रो भवति धर्मतः ॥१५-८-८॥
ahaṃ tu putro bhagavān pitā rājā guruś ca me। nideśavartī ca pituḥ putro bhavati dharmataḥ ॥15-8-8॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तु (tu) - but; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; भगवान् (bhagavān) - venerable; पिता (pitā) - father; राजा (rājā) - king; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - for me; निदेशवर्ती (nideśavartī) - obeyer of command; च (ca) - and; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma;]
(I but son, venerable father, king, and teacher for me. The son of the father becomes the obeyer of command according to dharma.)
But I am a son; my father is venerable, king, and teacher to me. By dharma, the son should obey the command of the father. (15-8-8)
इत्युक्तः स तु तं प्राह व्यासो धर्मभृतां वरः। युधिष्ठिरं महातेजाः पुनरेव विशां पते ॥१५-८-९॥
ity-uktaḥ sa tu taṃ prāha vyāso dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiraṃ mahātejāḥ punar-eva viśāṃ pate ॥15-8-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - him; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of upholders of dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great energy; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Thus addressed, he but him spoke Vyāsa, best of upholders of dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira, of great energy, again indeed, O lord of men.)
Thus addressed, Vyāsa, the best among upholders of righteousness, again spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira, the highly radiant lord of men. (15-8-9)
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि भारत। राजायं वृद्धतां प्राप्तः प्रमाणे परमे स्थितः ॥१५-८-१०॥
evam etan mahābāho yathā vadasi bhārata। rājā ayaṁ vṛddhatāṁ prāptaḥ pramāṇe parame sthitaḥ ॥15-8-10॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतन् (etan) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you say; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; राजा (rājā) - the king; अयम् (ayaṁ) - this; वृद्धताम् (vṛddhatām) - old age; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has attained; प्रमाणे (pramāṇe) - in authority; परमे (parame) - supreme; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - is situated;]
(Thus, this, O mighty-armed, as you say, O Bhārata, the king, this, old age has attained, in supreme authority, is situated.)
O mighty-armed Bhārata, it is indeed as you say. This king has attained old age and is situated in supreme authority. (15-8-10)
सोऽयं मयाभ्यनुज्ञातस्त्वया च पृथिवीपते। करोतु स्वमभिप्रायं मास्य विघ्नकरो भव ॥१५-८-११॥
so'yaṁ mayābhyanujñātas tvayā ca pṛthivīpate. karotu svam abhiprāyaṁ māsya vighnakaro bhava ॥15-8-11॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - permitted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; पृथिवी-पते (pṛthivī-pate) - O lord of the earth; करोतु (karotu) - let him do; स्वम् (svam) - his own; अभिप्रायम् (abhiprāyam) - intention; मा (mā) - do not; अस्य (asya) - for him; विघ्नकरः (vighnakaraḥ) - obstacle-maker; भव (bhava) - be;]
(He, this (one), permitted by me and by you, O lord of the earth, let him do his own intention; do not be an obstacle-maker for him.)
He, having been permitted by me and by you, O king, let him carry out his intention; do not create obstacles for him. (15-8-11)
एष एव परो धर्मो राजर्षीणां युधिष्ठिर। समरे वा भवेन्मृत्युर्वने वा विधिपूर्वकम् ॥१५-८-१२॥
eṣa eva paro dharmo rājarṣīṇāṃ yudhiṣṭhira। samare vā bhavenmṛtyurvane vā vidhipūrvakam ॥15-8-12॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; एव (eva) - indeed; परो (paro) - supreme; धर्मो (dharmo) - duty; राजर्षीणां (rājarṣīṇāṃ) - of royal sages; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhisthira; समरे (samare) - in battle; वा (vā) - or; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; वने (vane) - in the forest; वा (vā) - or; विधिपूर्वकम् (vidhipūrvakam) - according to the ordinance;]
(This indeed is the supreme duty of royal sages, O Yudhisthira: either in battle may there be death, or in the forest according to law.)
This is truly the highest duty of royal sages, O Yudhisthira: to either meet death in battle, or to reside in the forest according to prescribed rules. (15-8-12)
पित्रा तु तव राजेन्द्र पाण्डुना पृथिवीक्षिता। शिष्यभूतेन राजायं गुरुवत्पर्युपासितः ॥१५-८-१३॥
pitrā tu tava rājendra pāṇḍunā pṛthivīkṣitā। śiṣyabhūtena rājāyaṃ guruvat paryupāsitaḥ ॥15-8-13॥
[पित्रा (pitrā) - by (your) father; तु (tu) - but; तव (tava) - your; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O best of kings; पाण्डुना (pāṇḍunā) - by Pāṇḍu; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; ईक्षिता (īkṣitā) - was ruled; शिष्यभूतेन (śiṣyabhūtena) - having become like a disciple; राजा (rājā) - the king; अयम् (ayam) - this; गुरुवत् (guruvat) - like a guru; पर्युपासितः (paryupāsitaḥ) - was served;]
(But by your father, O best of kings, by Pāṇḍu, the earth was ruled; by him, having become like a disciple, this king was served like a guru.)
But by your father Pāṇḍu, O best of kings, the earth was ruled; this king, having become as a disciple, served him as a teacher. (15-8-13)
क्रतुभिर्दक्षिणावद्भिरन्नपर्वतशोभितैः। महद्भिरिष्टं भोगाश्च भुक्ताः पुत्राश्च पालिताः ॥१५-८-१४॥
kratubhir dakṣiṇāvadbhir annaparvataśobhitaiḥ। mahadbhir iṣṭaṃ bhogāś ca bhuktāḥ putrāś ca pālitāḥ ॥15-8-14॥
[क्रतुभिः (kratubhiḥ) - by sacrifices; दक्षिणा-वत्भिः (dakṣiṇā-vadbhih) - endowed with generous gifts; अन्न-पर्वत-शोभितैः (anna-parvata-śobhitaiḥ) - adorned with heaps of food; महद्भिः (mahadbhiḥ) - by great (acts or things); इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - worship performed; भोगाः (bhogāḥ) - enjoyments; च (ca) - and; भुक्ताः (bhuktāḥ) - enjoyed; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; पालिताः (pālitāḥ) - protected;]
(By sacrifices endowed with generous gifts, adorned with heaps of food, and by great (acts), worship was performed; enjoyments were enjoyed and sons were protected.)

पुत्रसंस्थं च विपुलं राज्यं विप्रोषिते त्वयि। त्रयोदशसमा भुक्तं दत्तं च विविधं वसु ॥१५-८-१५॥
putrasaṁsthaṁ ca vipulaṁ rājyaṁ viproṣite tvayi। trayodaśasamā bhuktaṁ dattaṁ ca vividhaṁ vasu ॥15-8-15॥

(Kingdom, extensive, established in the son, and you being gone, thirteen years enjoyed, and various wealth given.)
The extensive kingdom, established in the son, was enjoyed for thirteen years during your absence, and various kinds of wealth were given. (15-8-15)
त्वया चायं नरव्याघ्र गुरुशुश्रूषया नृपः। आराधितः सभृत्येन गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१५-८-१६॥
tvayā cāyaṁ naravyāghra guruśuśrūṣayā nṛpaḥ। ārādhitaḥ sabhṛtyena gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī ॥15-8-16॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; गुरुशुश्रूषया (guruśuśrūṣayā) - by service to the elders; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; आराधितः (ārādhitaḥ) - has been pleased; सभृत्येन (sabhṛtyena) - with his attendants; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - illustrious (woman);]

अनुजानीहि पितरं समयोऽस्य तपोविधौ। न मन्युर्विद्यते चास्य सुसूक्ष्मोऽपि युधिष्ठिर ॥१५-८-१७॥
anujānīhi pitaraṃ samayo'sya tapovidhau। na manyurvidyate cāsya susūkṣmo'pi yudhiṣṭhira ॥15-8-17॥

(Permit the father; time of him in the ascetic rite. Not anger exists and in him, very subtle even, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Allow the father, for this is his proper time for ascetic observance; in him, O Yudhiṣṭhira, not even the subtlest anger exists. (15-8-17)
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनमनुज्ञाप्य च पार्थिवम्। तथास्त्विति च तेनोक्तः कौन्तेयेन ययौ वनम् ॥१५-८-१८॥
etāvad uktvā vacanam anujñāpya ca pārthivam। tathā astu iti ca tena uktaḥ kaunteyena yayau vanam॥15-8-18॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - thus much; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अनुज्ञाप्य (anujñāpya) - having permitted; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - the king; तथा (tathā) - so; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was spoken; कौन्तेयेन (kaunteyena) - by the son of Kunti; ययौ (yayau) - he went; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest;]
(Thus much having spoken, speech having permitted and the king, 'So be it' thus also by him having been spoken, by the son of Kunti, he went to the forest.)
Having said this much and permitting the king, and receiving the words 'So be it' from the son of Kunti, he departed to the forest. (15-8-18)
गते भगवति व्यासे राजा पाण्डुसुतस्ततः। प्रोवाच पितरं वृद्धं मन्दं मन्दमिवानतः ॥१५-८-१९॥
gate bhagavati vyāse rājā pāṇḍusutastataḥ। provāca pitaraṃ vṛddhaṃ mandaṃ mandamivānataḥ ॥15-8-19॥
[गते (gate) - having departed; भगवति (bhagavati) - in the venerable (one); व्यासे (vyāse) - Vyāsa; राजा (rājā) - king; पाण्डुसुतस्ततः (pāṇḍusutastataḥ) - then the son of Pāṇḍu; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - to (his) father; वृद्धं (vṛddham) - aged; मन्दं (mandam) - slowly; मन्दमिव (mandamiva) - as if slowly; अनतः (anataḥ) - bowed;]
(When the venerable Vyāsa had departed, then the king, son of Pāṇḍu, slowly spoke to his aged father, bowed, as if slowly.)
After the venerable Vyāsa had gone, the king, son of Pāṇḍu, bowed and gradually spoke in a gentle manner to his aged father. (15-8-19)
यदाह भगवान्व्यासो यच्चापि भवतो मतम्। यदाह च महेष्वासः कृपो विदुर एव च ॥१५-८-२०॥
yadāha bhagavān vyāso yac cāpi bhavato matam | yad āha ca maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpo vidura eva ca ॥15-8-20॥

Whatever the venerable Vyāsa has said, and whatever is your opinion, and what the mighty-armed Kṛpa and Vidura have said—(15-8-20)
युयुत्सुः सञ्जयश्चैव तत्कर्तास्म्यहमञ्जसा। सर्वे ह्येतेऽनुमान्या मे कुलस्यास्य हितैषिणः ॥१५-८-२१॥
yuyutsuḥ sañjayaś caiva tatkartāsmya hamañjasā। sarve hy ete'numānyā me kulasyāsya hitaiṣiṇaḥ ॥15-8-21॥

(Yuyutsuḥ, Sañjaya and indeed that doer I am directly. All indeed these to be honored by me of the family of this well-wishers.)
