सन्धिविग्रहमप्यत्र पश्येथा राजसत्तम। द्वियोनिं त्रिविधोपायं बहुकल्पं युधिष्ठिर ॥१५-१२-१॥
sandhivigraham apy atra paśyethā rājasattama. dviyoniṁ trividhopāyaṁ bahukalpaṁ yudhiṣṭhira ॥15-12-1॥

राजेन्द्र पर्युपासीथाश्छित्त्वा द्वैविध्यमात्मनः। तुष्टपुष्टबलः शत्रुरात्मवानिति च स्मरेत् ॥१५-१२-२॥
rājendra paryupāsīthāś-chittvā dvaividhyam-ātmanaḥ। tuṣṭapuṣṭabalaḥ śatrur-ātmavān-iti ca smaret ॥15-12-2॥
[राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; पर्युपासीथाः (paryupāsīthāḥ) - you should approach; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut off; द्वैविध्यम् (dvaividhyam) - duplicity; duality; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself; तुष्टपुष्टबलः (tuṣṭapuṣṭabalaḥ) - content, nourished, and strong one; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - your enemy; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-controlled; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; स्मरेत् (smaret) - one should remember;]
(O king of kings, you should approach, having cut off duplicity of yourself. The content, nourished, and strong enemy is self-controlled — thus and one should remember. (15-12-2))

पर्युपासनकाले तु विपरीतं विधीयते। आमर्दकाले राजेन्द्र व्यपसर्पस्ततो वरः ॥१५-१२-३॥
paryupāsanakāle tu viparītaṃ vidhīyate। āmardakāle rājendra vyapasarpastato varaḥ ॥15-12-3॥
[पर्युपासनकाले (paryupāsanakāle) - at the time of surrounding (siege); तु (tu) - but; विपरीतं (viparītaṃ) - the opposite; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is ordained; prescribed; आमर्दकाले (āmardakāle) - at the time of assault; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; व्यपसर्पः (vyapasarpaḥ) - retreat; withdrawal; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; वरः (varaḥ) - better; superior;]
(But at the time of surrounding (siege), the opposite is prescribed. At the time of assault, O king, retreat then is better.)
But during a siege, the opposite course is prescribed. O king, during an assault, it is better to withdraw. (15-12-3)
व्यसनं भेदनं चैव शत्रूणां कारयेत्ततः। कर्शनं भीषणं चैव युद्धे चापि बहुक्षयम् ॥१५-१२-४॥
vyasanaṃ bhedanaṃ caiva śatrūṇāṃ kārayettataḥ। karṣaṇaṃ bhīṣaṇaṃ caiva yuddhe cāpi bahukṣayam ॥15-12-4॥
[व्यसनं (vyasanaṃ) - adversity; भेदनं (bhedanaṃ) - causing division; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शत्रूणां (śatrūṇāṃ) - of enemies; कारयेत् (kārayet) - he should cause; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्शनं (karṣaṇam) - harassment; भीषणं (bhīṣaṇam) - frightfulness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; बहुक्षयम् (bahukṣayam) - great destruction;]
(Adversity, causing division indeed, of enemies, he should cause then; harassment, frightfulness indeed, in battle and also great destruction.)
Then he should bring adversity and division among the enemies; in battle he should also cause harassment, terror, and great destruction. (15-12-4)
प्रयास्यमानो नृपतिस्त्रिविधं परिचिन्तयेत्। आत्मनश्चैव शत्रोश्च शक्तिं शास्त्रविशारदः ॥१५-१२-५॥
prayāsyamāno nṛpatistrividhaṃ paricintayet. ātmanaścaiva śatrośca śaktiṃ śāstraviśāradaḥ ॥15-12-5॥
[प्रयास्यमानः (prayāsyamānaḥ) - setting forth; intending to act; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; त्रिविधम् (trividham) - in three ways; परिचिन्तयेत् (paricintayet) - should consider; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शत्रोः (śatroḥ) - of the enemy; च (ca) - and; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - power; शास्त्रविशारदः (śāstraviśāradaḥ) - one skilled in scriptures;]
(Setting forth, the king should consider in three ways; of himself and indeed of the enemy and the power, one skilled in scriptures.)
When setting forth, the king skilled in scriptures should consider three things: his own power, the enemy's power, and (the power) in threefold manner. (15-12-5)
उत्साहप्रभुशक्तिभ्यां मन्त्रशक्त्या च भारत। उपपन्नो नरो यायाद्विपरीतमतोऽन्यथा ॥१५-१२-६॥
utsāhaprabhuśaktibhyāṃ mantraśaktyā ca bhārata। upapanno naro yāyād viparītam ato'nyathā ॥15-12-6॥
[उत्साहप्रभुशक्तिभ्यां (utsāhaprabhuśaktibhyām) - by the powers of zeal and master; मन्त्रशक्त्या (mantraśaktyā) - by the power of counsel; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उपपन्नः (upapannaḥ) - qualified (being in possession); नरः (naraḥ) - man; यायात् (yāyāt) - should proceed; विपरीतम् (viparītam) - opposite (otherwise); अतः (ataḥ) - from this; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(By the powers of zeal and master, by the power of counsel, and O Bhārata, a man who is qualified should proceed; opposite from this, otherwise.)
O Bhārata, endowed with zeal, authority, and the power of counsel, a man should act; otherwise, he goes contrary to this. (15-12-6)
आददीत बलं राजा मौलं मित्रबलं तथा। अटवीबलं भृतं चैव तथा श्रेणीबलं च यत् ॥१५-१२-७॥
ādadīta balaṃ rājā maulaṃ mitrabalaṃ tathā. aṭavībalaṃ bhṛtaṃ caiva tathā śreṇībalaṃ ca yat ॥15-12-7॥
[आददीत (ādadīta) - should take; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; राजा (rājā) - the king; मौलं (maulaṃ) - inherent; मित्रबलं (mitrabalaṃ) - the strength of friends; तथा (tathā) - also; अटवीबलं (aṭavībalaṃ) - the strength of foresters; भृतं (bhṛtaṃ) - hired; चैव (caiva) - and also; तथा (tathā) - also; श्रेणीबलं (śreṇībalaṃ) - the strength of guilds; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which;]
(The king should take strength, inherent, and also the strength of friends, the strength of foresters, hired, and also the strength of guilds, and which.)
The king should acquire his own strength, the strength of friends, the strength of foresters, the strength of mercenaries, and the strength of guilds. (15-12-7)
तत्र मित्रबलं राजन्मौलेन न विशिष्यते। श्रेणीबलं भृतं चैव तुल्य एवेति मे मतिः ॥१५-१२-८॥
tatra mitrabalaṃ rājanmaulena na viśiṣyate. śreṇībalaṃ bhṛtaṃ caiva tulya eveti me matiḥ ॥15-12-8॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मित्रबलं (mitrabalaṃ) - the strength of friends; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मौलेन (maulena) - by the crown (by the king); न (na) - not; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished; श्रेणीबलं (śreṇībalaṃ) - the strength of guilds; भृतं (bhṛtam) - retainers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]
(There, O king, the strength of friends is not distinguished by the crown. The strength of guilds and retainers indeed thus my thought.)

तथा चारबलं चैव परस्परसमं नृप। विज्ञेयं बलकालेषु राज्ञा काल उपस्थिते ॥१५-१२-९॥
tathā cārabalaṃ caiva parasparasamaṃ nṛpa। vijñeyaṃ balakāleṣu rājñā kāla upasthite ॥15-12-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; चारबलं (cārabalam) - spies' force; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; परस्परसमं (parasparasamam) - mutually equal; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; विज्ञेयं (vijñeyam) - should be understood; बलकालेषु (balakāleṣu) - at the times of (military) forces; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; काल (kāla) - time; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - when present;]
(Thus the force of spies and indeed (the other force) mutually equal, O king, should be understood at the times of forces, by the king, when the time is present.)

आपदश्चापि बोद्धव्या बहुरूपा नराधिप। भवन्ति राज्ञां कौरव्य यास्ताः पृथगतः शृणु ॥१५-१२-१०॥
āpadaś cāpi boddhavyā bahurūpā narādhipa। bhavanti rājñāṃ kauravya yāstāḥ pṛthagataḥ śṛṇu॥15-12-10॥
[आपदः (āpadaḥ) - difficulties; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; बोद्धव्या (boddhavyāḥ) - should be understood; बहुरूपाः (bahurūpāḥ) - of many forms; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - arise; राज्ञां (rājñām) - to kings; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; याः (yāḥ) - which; ताः (tāḥ) - those; पृथगतः (pṛthagataḥ) - separately; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(Difficulties and also, should be understood, of many forms, O king. Arise to kings, O descendant of Kuru, which those separately, hear.)

विकल्पा बहवो राजन्नापदां पाण्डुनन्दन। सामादिभिरुपन्यस्य शमयेत्तान्नृपः सदा ॥१५-१२-११॥
vikalpā bahavo rājann āpadāṃ pāṇḍunandana। sāmādibhir upanyasya śamayet tān nṛpaḥ sadā ॥15-12-11॥
[विकल्पा (vikalpā) - alternatives; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आपदां (āpadām) - of calamities; पाण्डुनन्दन (pāṇḍunandana) - O son of Pāṇḍu; सामादिभिः (sāmādibhiḥ) - with Sāma and others (means such as conciliation, etc.); उपन्यस्य (upanyasya) - having applied; शमयेत् (śamayet) - should appease; तान् (tān) - those (calamities); नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Alternatives many O king of calamities O son of Pandu, with Sāma and others, having applied, should appease those king always.)
O son of Pandu, O king, there are many alternatives in times of calamity; by applying Sāma and other means, the king should always pacify them. (15-12-11)
यात्रां यायाद्बलैर्युक्तो राजा षड्भिः परन्तप। संयुक्तो देशकालाभ्यां बलैरात्मगुणैस्तथा ॥१५-१२-१२॥
yātrāṃ yāyād balair yukto rājā ṣaḍbhiḥ parantapa। saṃyukto deśa-kālābhyāṃ balaiḥ ātma-guṇaiḥ tathā ॥15-12-12॥
[यात्राम् (yātrām) - expedition; यायात् (yāyāt) - should go; बलैः (balaiḥ) - with forces; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; राजा (rājā) - the king; षड्भिः (ṣaḍbhiḥ) - with six; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; संयुक्तः (saṃyuktaḥ) - joined; देशकालाभ्याम् (deśa-kālābhyām) - with place and time; बलैः (balaiḥ) - with strengths; आत्मगुणैः (ātma-guṇaiḥ) - by personal qualities; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(The king endowed with six forces, O scorcher of foes, should go on the expedition, being joined also with the strengths of place and time and by personal qualities.)
O scorcher of foes, the king, equipped with six forces, should undertake the expedition, properly united with the advantages of place and time and his own qualities. (15-12-12)
तुष्टपुष्टबलो यायाद्राजा वृद्ध्युदये रतः। आहूतश्चाप्यथो यायादनृतावपि पार्थिवः ॥१५-१२-१३॥
tuṣṭapuṣṭabalo yāyād rājā vṛddhyudaye rataḥ। āhūtaś cāpy atho yāyād anṛtāv api pārthivaḥ ॥15-12-13॥
[तुष्ट (tuṣṭa) - content; पुष्ट (puṣṭa) - prosperous; बलः (balaḥ) - strong; यायात् (yāyāt) - should proceed; राजा (rājā) - the king; वृद्धि (vṛddhi) - growth; उदये (udaye) - in the rise; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; आहूतः (āhūtaḥ) - when summoned; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अथ (atho) - moreover; यायात् (yāyāt) - he should proceed; अनृतौ (anṛtau) - in the untruth; अपि (api) - even; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - ruler;]
(Content, prosperous, strong, should proceed the king engaged in the rise of growth; when summoned and also moreover, he should proceed, even in untruth, the ruler.)
The king who is content, prosperous, and strong should undertake actions devoted to the growth of prosperity; and moreover, when summoned, the ruler should proceed even if it is not the time of truth. (15-12-13)
स्थूणाश्मानं वाजिरथप्रधानां; ध्वजद्रुमैः संवृतकूलरोधसम्। पदातिनागैर्बहुकर्दमां नदीं; सपत्ननाशे नृपतिः प्रयायात् ॥१५-१२-१४॥
sthūṇāśmānaṃ vājirathapradhānāṃ; dhvajadrumaiḥ saṃvṛtakūlarodhasam। padātināgairbahukardamāṃ nadīṃ; sapatnanāśe nṛpatiḥ prayāyāt ॥15-12-14॥
[स्थूणाश्मानं (sthūṇāśmānam) - with pillars and stones; वाजिरथप्रधानां (vājirathapradhānām) - with horses and chariots as foremost; ध्वजद्रुमैः (dhvajadrumaiḥ) - with flag-trees (banner poles); संवृतकूलरोधसम् (saṃvṛtakūlarodhasam) - having banks covered (blocked) by; पदातिनागैः (padātināgaiḥ) - by foot-soldiers and elephants; बहुकर्दमां (bahukardamām) - very muddy; नदीं (nadīm) - the river; सप्त्ननाशे (sapatnanāśe) - for the destruction of the rival; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; प्रयायात् (prayāyāt) - set forth (went);]
(The river with pillars and stones, with horses and chariots at the forefront, with flag-trees having banks covered, made very muddy by foot-soldiers and elephants, for the destruction of the rival, the king set forth.)
The king advanced towards the river, whose banks were blocked by flag-trees, made very muddy by foot-soldiers and elephants, and filled with pillars, stones, horses, and chariots at the forefront, in order to destroy his rival. (15-12-14)
अथोपपत्त्या शकटं पद्मं वज्रं च भारत। उशना वेद यच्छास्त्रं तत्रैतद्विहितं विभो ॥१५-१२-१५॥
athopapattayā śakaṭaṃ padmaṃ vajraṃ ca bhārata। uśanā veda yacchāstraṃ tatraitadvihitaṃ vibho ॥15-12-15॥
[अथ (atha) - now; उपपत्त्या (upapattayā) - by reasoning; शकटं (śakaṭam) - cart; पद्मं (padmam) - lotus; वज्रं (vajram) - thunderbolt; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā (Śukra); वेद (veda) - knows; यत् (yat) - which; शास्त्रं (śāstram) - science; तत्र (tatra) - there; एतत् (etat) - this; विहितं (vihitam) - prescribed; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(Now, by reasoning, cart, lotus, thunderbolt and, O Bhārata; Uśanā knows which science, there this is prescribed, O mighty one.)
Now, O Bhārata, by reasoning, the cart, lotus, and thunderbolt (methods); that science which Uśanā knows—there, this is prescribed, O mighty one. (15-12-15)
सादयित्वा परबलं कृत्वा च बलहर्षणम्। स्वभूमौ योजयेद्युद्धं परभूमौ तथैव च ॥१५-१२-१६॥
sādayitvā parabalaṃ kṛtvā ca balaharṣaṇam। svabhūmau yojayed yuddhaṃ parabhūmau tathaiva ca ॥15-12-16॥
[सादयित्वा (sādayitvā) - having subdued; परबलम् (parabalam) - the enemy’s force; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; च (ca) - and; बलहर्षणम् (balaharṣaṇam) - diminishing the strength; स्वभूमौ (svabhūmau) - on one’s own land; योजयेत् (yojayet) - one should engage; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; परभूमौ (parabhūmau) - on enemy’s land; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; च (ca) - and;]
(Having subdued the enemy’s force and having diminished its strength, one should engage battle on one’s own land and likewise on the enemy’s land.)
After subduing the enemy’s force and weakening its strength, one should organize battle both on one’s own land and, similarly, on the enemy’s land. (15-12-16)
लब्धं प्रशमयेद्राजा निक्षिपेद्धनिनो नरान्। ज्ञात्वा स्वविषयं तं च सामादिभिरुपक्रमेत् ॥१५-१२-१७॥
labdhaṃ praśamayed rājā nikṣiped dhanino narān। jñātvā sva-viṣayaṃ taṃ ca sāmādibhir upakramet ॥15-12-17॥
[लब्धं (labdham) - acquired; obtained; प्रशमयेत् (praśamayet) - should quell; should pacify; राजा (rājā) - king; निक्षिपेत् (nikṣipet) - should deposit; धनिनः (dhaninaḥ) - the wealthy; the possessors of wealth; नरान् (narān) - men; persons; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; स्वविषयं (sva-viṣayam) - one’s own domain; own territory; तं (tam) - that (object/person); च (ca) - and; सामादिभिः (sāmādibhiḥ) - with conciliation and others (such as gifts, etc.); उपक्रमेत् (upakramet) - should approach; should proceed (towards);]
(Acquired, should quell, king, should deposit, the wealthy persons. Having known, one’s own domain, that and, with conciliation and others, should approach.)
The king should, having acquired (what is necessary), pacify (matters), and entrust the wealthy men. Knowing his own domain and that (matter), he should approach with conciliation and other means. (15-12-17)
सर्वथैव महाराज शरीरं धारयेदिह। प्रेत्येह चैव कर्तव्यमात्मनिःश्रेयसं परम् ॥१५-१२-१८॥
sarvathaiva mahārāja śarīraṁ dhārayed iha। pretyeha caiva kartavyam ātmaniḥśreyasaṁ param ॥15-12-18॥
[सर्वथा एव (sarvathā eva) - in every way indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; धारयेत् (dhārayet) - should maintain; इह (iha) - here; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after departing (from the body); इह च एव (iha ca eva) - and here also indeed; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - that which is to be done; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in the self; निःश्रेयसं (niḥśreyasaṁ) - supreme good; परम् (param) - highest;]
(In every way indeed, O great king, the body should be maintained here. After departing (this body) and here also indeed, the highest good to be done regarding the self (is) the supreme good.)
O great king, one should always maintain the body here in every way. Upon death and here as well, what must be done is to pursue the highest ultimate good for the self. (15-12-18)
एवं कुर्वञ्शुभा वाचो लोकेऽस्मिञ्शृणुते नृपः। प्रेत्य स्वर्गं तथाप्नोति प्रजा धर्मेण पालयन् ॥१५-१२-१९॥
evaṁ kurvañ śubhā vāco loke'smiñ śṛṇute nṛpaḥ। pretya svargaṁ tathāpnōti prajā dharmeṇa pālayan ॥15-12-19॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; शृणुते (śṛṇute) - he is heard; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed (after death); स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अप्नोति (apnoti) - attains; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; पालयन् (pālayan) - protecting;]
(Thus doing auspicious words in this world, the king is heard; having departed, he likewise attains heaven, protecting subjects with righteousness.)
Thus, by speaking auspicious words in this world, the king becomes renowned; after death, he also attains heaven by protecting his subjects with righteousness. (15-12-19)
एवं त्वया कुरुश्रेष्ठ वर्तितव्यं प्रजाहितम्। उभयोर्लोकयोस्तात प्राप्तये नित्यमेव च ॥१५-१२-२०॥
evaṁ tvayā kuruśreṣṭha vartitavyaṁ prajāhitam। ubhayorlokayostāta prāptaye nityameva ca ॥15-12-20॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; वर्तितव्यं (vartitavyam) - it should be conducted; प्रजाहितम् (prajāhitam) - for the welfare of people; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; लोकयोः (lokayoḥ) - worlds; तात (tāta) - O dear one; प्राप्तये (prāptaye) - for attainment; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Thus by you, O best of the Kurus, it should be conducted for the welfare of people; of both worlds, O dear one, for the attainment, always indeed and.)
Thus, O best of the Kurus, you should always act for the welfare of the people, for the attainment of both worlds, O dear one, indeed and always. (15-12-20)
भीष्मेण पूर्वमुक्तोऽसि कृष्णेन विदुरेण च। मयाप्यवश्यं वक्तव्यं प्रीत्या ते नृपसत्तम ॥१५-१२-२१॥
bhīṣmeṇa pūrvam ukto'si kṛṣṇena vidureṇa ca। mayāpy avaśyaṃ vaktavyaṃ prītyā te nṛpasattama ॥15-12-21॥
[भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken (to you); असि (asi) - you are; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; अपि (api) - also; अवश्यम् (avaśyam) - certainly; वक्तव्यम् (vaktavyam) - must be spoken; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; ते (te) - to you; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(By Bhīṣma, previously, spoken (to you) are you; by Kṛṣṇa, by Vidura and; by me also, certainly, must be spoken, with affection, to you, O best of kings.)
Bhīṣma has previously spoken to you, and so have Kṛṣṇa and Vidura; but I too must certainly say it to you, O best of kings, out of affection. (15-12-21)
एतत्सर्वं यथान्यायं कुर्वीथा भूरिदक्षिण। प्रियस्तथा प्रजानां त्वं स्वर्गे सुखमवाप्स्यसि ॥१५-१२-२२॥
etatsarvaṃ yathānyāyaṃ kurvīthā bhūridakṣiṇa। priyastathā prajānāṃ tvaṃ svarge sukhamavāpsyasi॥15-12-22॥
[एतत्सर्वं (etat sarvam) - this all; यथान्यायं (yathā-nyāyam) - according to justice; कुर्वीथा (kurvīthā) - you should do; भूरिदक्षिण (bhūri-dakṣiṇa) - one who gives abundant gifts; प्रियस्तथा (priyas tathā) - dear thus; प्रजानां (prajānām) - of the people; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(This all according to justice you should do, abundant-giver; dear thus of the people, you in heaven happiness will attain.)
You, O great giver of gifts, should perform all this according to justice; thus, being dear to the people, you will attain happiness in heaven. (15-12-22)
अश्वमेधसहस्रेण यो यजेत्पृथिवीपतिः। पालयेद्वापि धर्मेण प्रजास्तुल्यं फलं लभेत् ॥१५-१२-२३॥
aśvamedhasahasreṇa yo yajet pṛthivīpatiḥ। pālayed vā api dharmeṇa prajāḥ tulyaṃ phalaṃ labhet ॥15-12-23॥
[अश्वमेधसहस्रेण (aśvamedhasahasreṇa) - with a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices; यः (yaḥ) - who; यजेत् (yajet) - might perform; पृथिवीपतिः (pṛthivīpatiḥ) - the lord of the earth; पालयेत् (pālayet) - might protect; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; तुल्यं (tulyaṃ) - equal; फलम् (phalam) - result; लभेत् (labhet) - might obtain;]
(With a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices, who might perform, the lord of the earth, or might protect also, with righteousness, the subjects, equal result might obtain.)
A king who performs a thousand Aśvamedha sacrifices, or who rules his subjects righteously, obtains an equal result. (15-12-23)
