एवमेतत्करिष्यामि यथात्थ पृथिवीपते। भूयश्चैवानुशास्योऽहं भवता पार्थिवर्षभ ॥१५-१३-१॥
evam etat kariṣyāmi yathāttha pṛthivīpate। bhūyaś caivānuśāsyo'haṃ bhavatā pārthivarṣabha ॥15-13-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this manner; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; यथा (yathā) - as; according as; अथ (attha) - you have said; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुशास्यः (anuśāsyaḥ) - to be instructed; अहम् (aham) - I; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; पार्थिवर्षभ (pārthivarṣabha) - O best of kings;]
(Thus this I will do as you have said, O lord of the earth. Again and indeed, to be instructed I (am) by you, O best of kings.)
I will do this exactly as you have said, O lord of the earth. And again, I am to be instructed by you, O best of kings. (15-13-1)
भीष्मे स्वर्गमनुप्राप्ते गते च मधुसूदने। विदुरे सञ्जये चैव कोऽन्यो मां वक्तुमर्हति ॥१५-१३-२॥
bhīṣme svargamanuprāpte gate ca madhusūdane। vidure sañjaye caiva ko'anyo māṃ vaktumarhati ॥15-13-2॥

With Bhīṣma having ascended to heaven, Madhusūdana departed, and Vidura and Sañjaya too—who else is worthy to address me? (15-13-2)
यत्तु मामनुशास्तीह भवानद्य हिते स्थितः। कर्तास्म्येतन्महीपाल निर्वृतो भव भारत ॥१५-१३-३॥
yattu māmanuśāstīha bhavānadya hite sthitaḥ। kartāsm yetanmahīpāla nirvṛto bhava bhārata॥15-13-3॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तु (tu) - but; माम् (mām) - me; अनुशास्ति (anuśāsti) - instructs; इह (iha) - here; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); अद्य (adya) - today; हिते (hite) - for welfare; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; कर्तास्मि (kartā asmi) - I am doer; एतत् (etat) - this; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O king; निर्वृतः (nirvṛtaḥ) - satisfied; भव (bhava) - become; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(But which here you instruct me today, standing for welfare, that I am doer of this, O king, satisfied be, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, O king, be satisfied, for I will do that which you here today instruct me as beneficial. (15-13-3)

evam-uktaḥ sa rājarṣir dharmarājena dhīmatā। kaunteyaṃ samanujñātum iyeṣa bharatarṣabha॥15-13-4॥

(Thus spoken (to), he the royal sage by the wise Dharmarāja, to Kunteya to permit desired, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, thus addressed by the wise Dharmarāja, the royal sage wished to obtain Kunteya's permission. (15-13-4)
पुत्र विश्रम्यतां तावन्ममापि बलवाञ्श्रमः। इत्युक्त्वा प्राविशद्राजा गान्धार्या भवनं तदा ॥१५-१३-५॥
putra viśramyatāṃ tāvan mamāpi balavāñ śramaḥ। ity uktvā prāviśad rājā gāndhāryā bhavanaṃ tadā॥15-13-5॥
[पुत्र (putra) - son; विश्रम्यताम् (viśramyatām) - may (you) rest; तावन् (tāvan) - meanwhile; ममापि (mama api) - my also; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; श्रमः (śramaḥ) - fatigue; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - he entered; राजा (rājā) - king; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - of Gāndhārī; भवनम् (bhavanam) - palace; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Son, may you rest meanwhile; my fatigue is also strong. Thus having said, the king entered Gāndhārī's palace then.)
“Son, you should rest for a while; I too am quite weary.” Thus having spoken, the king then entered Gāndhārī's palace. (15-13-5)
तमासनगतं देवी गान्धारी धर्मचारिणी। उवाच काले कालज्ञा प्रजापतिसमं पतिम् ॥१५-१३-६॥
tamāsanagataṃ devī gāndhārī dharmacāriṇī। uvāca kāle kālajñā prajāpatisamaṃ patim ॥15-13-6॥

The righteous lady Gāndhārī, knowing the proper time, spoke to her husband—who was seated and equal to Prajāpati—at the appropriate moment. (15-13-6)
अनुज्ञातः स्वयं तेन व्यासेनापि महर्षिणा। युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते कदारण्यं गमिष्यसि ॥१५-१३-७॥
anujñātaḥ svayaṁ tena vyāsenāpi maharṣiṇā। yudhiṣṭhirasya-anumate kadā araṇyaṃ gamiṣyasi ॥15-13-7॥

Having been permitted yourself by him, by Vyāsa who is also a great sage, and with the approval of Yudhiṣṭhira, when will you go to the forest? (15-13-7)

गान्धार्यहमनुज्ञातः स्वयं पित्रा महात्मना। युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते गन्तास्मि नचिराद्वनम् ॥१५-१३-८॥
gāndhāry aham anujñātaḥ svayaṃ pitrā mahātmanā। yudhiṣṭhirasya anumate gantāsmi nacirād vanam ॥15-13-8॥

अहं हि नाम सर्वेषां तेषां दुर्द्यूतदेविनाम्। पुत्राणां दातुमिच्छामि प्रेत्यभावानुगं वसु ॥ सर्वप्रकृतिसांनिध्यं कारयित्वा स्ववेश्मनि ॥१५-१३-९॥
ahaṃ hi nāma sarveṣāṃ teṣāṃ durdyūtadevinām। putrāṇāṃ dātum icchāmi pretyabhāvānugaṃ vasu॥ sarvaprakṛtīsāmnidhyaṃ kārayitvā svaveśmani॥15-13-9॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - truly; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; दुर्द्यूतदेविनाम् (durdyūtadevinām) - of those expert in evil dice; पुत्राणां (putrāṇāṃ) - of the sons; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; प्रेत्यभावानुगं (pretyabhāvānugam) - following after death; वसु (vasu) - wealth; सर्वप्रकृतिसांनिध्यं (sarvaprakṛtīsāmnidhyam) - in the presence of all officials; कारयित्वा (kārayitvā) - having caused to be done; स्ववेश्मनि (svaveśmani) - in my own house;]
(I indeed truly of all of them, of those expert in evil dice, of the sons, to give I desire, wealth following after death. In the presence of all officials, having caused (this) to be done, in my own house.)
I indeed truly desire to give, after my death, the wealth belonging to all those men skilled in evil dice to their sons, having caused it to be done in my own house in the presence of all officials. (15-13-9)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इत्युक्त्वा धर्मराजाय प्रेषयामास पार्थिवः। स च तद्वचनात्सर्वं समानिन्ये महीपतिः ॥१५-१३-१०॥
ity uktvā dharmarājāya preṣayāmāsa pārthivaḥ. sa ca tadvacanāt sarvaṃ samāninye mahīpatiḥ ॥15-13-10॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; धर्मराजाय (dharmarājāya) - to Dharmarāja; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तद्वचनात् (tadvacanāt) - by that command; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; समानिन्ये (samāninye) - brought; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the ruler of the earth;]
(Thus having spoken to Dharmarāja, the king sent (it). And he, by that command, brought all the ruler of the earth.)
Having said this, the king sent it to Dharmarāja; and, by that command, the ruler of the earth brought everything. (15-13-10)
ततो निष्क्रम्य नृपतिस्तस्मादन्तःपुरात्तदा। सर्वं सुहृज्जनं चैव सर्वाश्च प्रकृतीस्तथा ॥ समवेतांश्च तान्सर्वान्पौरजानपदानथ ॥१५-१३-११॥
tato niṣkramya nṛpatistasmād antaḥ-purāt tadā। sarvaṃ suhṛj-janaṃ caiva sarvāś ca prakṛtīs tathā ॥ samavetāṃś ca tān sarvān paurajānapadān atha ॥15-13-11॥

Then the king, having come out from the inner palace at that time, summoned all his friends, officials, as well as all the assembled citizens and country people. (15-13-11)
ब्राह्मणांश्च महीपालान्नानादेशसमागतान्। ततः प्राह महातेजा धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ॥१५-१३-१२॥
brāhmaṇāṃś ca mahīpālān nānādeśasamāgatān। tataḥ prāha mahātejā dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ ॥15-13-12॥
[ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; (learned priests;) च (ca) - and; महीपालान् (mahīpālān) - kings; (rulers of earth;) नानादेशसमागतान् (nānādeśasamāgatān) - having come from various regions; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राह (prāha) - (he) spoke; महातेजाः (mahātejā) - of great splendor; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king;]
(Brāhmaṇas and kings gathered from various regions, then the great-splendor king Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke.)
Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king of great splendor, then spoke to the brāhmaṇas and kings who had assembled from various regions. (15-13-12)
शृण्वन्त्येकाग्रमनसो ब्राह्मणाः कुरुजाङ्गलाः। क्षत्रियाश्चैव वैश्याश्च शूद्राश्चैव समागताः ॥१५-१३-१३॥
śṛṇvantyekāgramanaso brāhmaṇāḥ kurujāṅgalāḥ। kṣatriyāścaiva vaiśyāśca śūdrāścaiva samāgatāḥ ॥15-13-13॥
[शृण्वन्ति (śṛṇvanti) - they listen; एकाग्रमनसः (ekāgramanasaḥ) - with concentrated mind; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; कुरुजाङ्गलाः (kurujāṅgalāḥ) - the Kurujāṅgala people; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - Vaiśyas; च (ca) - and; शूद्राः (śūdrāḥ) - Śūdras; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(Brāhmaṇas of Kurujāṅgala with concentrated mind listen; and Kṣatriyas, and indeed Vaiśyas, and Śūdras, and indeed, assembled.)
The Brāhmaṇas of Kurujāṅgala, with concentrated minds, listen; and the Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras too, all assembled. (15-13-13)
भवन्तः कुरवश्चैव बहुकालं सहोषिताः। परस्परस्य सुहृदः परस्परहिते रताः ॥१५-१३-१४॥
bhavantaḥ kuravaścaiva bahukālaṃ sahoṣitāḥ। parasparasya suhṛdaḥ parasparahite ratāḥ ॥15-13-14॥
[भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (all); कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बहुकालं (bahukālam) - for a long time; सह (saha) - together; उषिताः (uṣitāḥ) - have dwelled; परस्परस्य (parasparasya) - of each other; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; परस्परहिते (parasparahite) - in each other's welfare; रताः (ratāḥ) - engaged;]
(You (all) and the Kurus indeed have dwelled together for a long time, (being) friends of each other, engaged in each other's welfare.)
You and the Kurus have long lived together as friends, devoted to each other's welfare. (15-13-14)
यदिदानीमहं ब्रूयामस्मिन्काल उपस्थिते। तथा भवद्भिः कर्तव्यमविचार्य वचो मम ॥१५-१३-१५॥
yad idānīm ahaṁ brūyām asmin kāla upasthite. tathā bhavadbhiḥ kartavyam avicārya vaco mama ॥15-13-15॥
[यत् (yat) - which; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रूयाम् (brūyām) - might speak; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; काल (kāla) - time; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - having arrived; तथा (tathā) - so; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you all; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - it is to be done; अविचार्य (avicārya) - without consideration; वचः (vacaḥ) - the word (speech); मम (mama) - my;]
(Which now I might speak at this time having arrived, so by you all it is to be done, without considering my word.)
Whatever I now say at this present time, that should be done by you all, without questioning my word. (15-13-15)
अरण्यगमने बुद्धिर्गान्धारीसहितस्य मे। व्यासस्यानुमते राज्ञस्तथा कुन्तीसुतस्य च ॥ भवन्तोऽप्यनुजानन्तु मा वोऽन्या भूद्विचारणा ॥१५-१३-१६॥
araṇyagamane buddhirgāndhārīsahitasya me। vyāsasyānumate rājñastathā kuntīsutasya ca ॥ bhavanto'pyanujānantu mā vo'nyā bhūdvicāraṇā ॥15-13-16॥

(In the going to the forest, (the) resolution of (one) accompanied by Gāndhārī is mine, by the consent of Vyāsa, of the king, and also of Kuntī's son. You also may permit. Let there not be any other consideration for you. (15-13-16))
My decision to go to the forest along with Gāndhārī is made with the approval of Vyāsa, the king, and Kuntī's son. You also should permit it, and let there be no other deliberation among you. (15-13-16)
अस्माकं भवतां चैव येयं प्रीतिर्हि शाश्वती। न चान्येष्वस्ति देशेषु राज्ञामिति मतिर्मम ॥१५-१३-१७॥
asmākaṃ bhavatāṃ caiva yeyaṃ prītiḥ hi śāśvatī। na ca anyeṣu asti deśeṣu rājñām iti matir mama ॥15-13-17॥
[अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - of us; भवतां (bhavatāṃ) - of you (plural; respected persons); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; या (yā) - which (feminine); इयं (iyaṃ) - this; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; love; हि (hi) - indeed; truly; शाश्वती (śāśvatī) - eternal; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्येषु (anyeṣu) - in others; अस्ति (asti) - exists; देशेषु (deśeṣu) - in countries; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; इति (iti) - thus; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; opinion; मम (mama) - my;]
(Of us and of you indeed, this affection indeed is eternal; and not in other countries of kings does it exist—thus my thought.)
The affection that exists between us and you is truly eternal; I believe such affection among kings is not found in other lands. (15-13-17)
श्रान्तोऽस्मि वयसानेन तथा पुत्रविनाकृतः। उपवासकृशश्चास्मि गान्धारीसहितोऽनघाः ॥१५-१३-१८॥
śrānto'smi vayasānena tathā putravinākṛtaḥ। upavāsakṛśaścāsmi gāndhārīsahito'naghāḥ॥15-13-18॥
[श्रान्तः (śrāntaḥ) - exhausted; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वयसानेन (vayasānena) - by old age; तथा (tathā) - also; पुत्रविना (putravinā) - bereft of son; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - become; उपवासकृशः (upavāsakṛśaḥ) - emaciated by fasting; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; गान्धारीसहितः (gāndhārīsahitaḥ) - together with Gandhari; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - O sinless ones;]
(Exhausted I am by old age, also become bereft of son; emaciated by fasting and I am, together with Gandhari, O sinless ones.)
I am exhausted by old age and also have become bereft of my son; I am emaciated by fasting, together with Gandhari, O sinless ones. (15-13-18)
युधिष्ठिरगते राज्ये प्राप्तश्चास्मि सुखं महत्। मन्ये दुर्योधनैश्वर्याद्विशिष्टमिति सत्तमाः ॥१५-१३-१९॥
yudhiṣṭhiragate rājye prāptaścāsmi sukhaṃ mahat। manye duryodhanaiśvaryād viśiṣṭam iti sattamāḥ ॥15-13-19॥
[युधिष्ठिरगते (yudhiṣṭhira-gate) - when Yudhishthira (has) obtained; राज्ये (rājye) - the kingdom; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - (I have) attained; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - am; सुखं (sukham) - happiness; महत् (mahat) - great; मन्ये (manye) - I think; दुर्योधनैश्वर्यात् (duryodhana-aiśvaryāt) - from Duryodhana's sovereignty; विशिष्टम् (viśiṣṭam) - (more) excellent; इति (iti) - thus; सत्तमाः (sattamāḥ) - O best of beings;]
(When Yudhishthira has obtained the kingdom, and I have attained great happiness, I think (this is) more excellent than Duryodhana's sovereignty, thus, O best of beings.)
Now that Yudhishthira has gained the kingdom, I have found great happiness. I consider this to be superior to the sovereignty of Duryodhana, O best of men. (15-13-19)
मम त्वन्धस्य वृद्धस्य हतपुत्रस्य का गतिः। ऋते वनं महाभागास्तन्मानुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥१५-१३-२०॥
mama tv andhasya vṛddhasya hataputrasya kā gatiḥ। ṛte vanaṃ mahābhāgās tan mānujñātum arhatha ॥15-13-20॥
[मम (mama) - my; त्व (tv) - but; अन्धस्य (andhasya) - of the blind; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - of the old; हतपुत्रस्य (hataputrasya) - of the one with son killed; का (kā) - what; गतिः (gatiḥ) - way; ऋते (ṛte) - except; वनम् (vanam) - forest; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - O highly fortunate ones; तत् (tat) - that; मानुज्ञातुम् (mānujñātum) - to permit me; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(My, but of the blind, of the old, of the one whose son was killed, what way (is there)? Except (for) forest, O highly fortunate ones, that to permit me you ought.)
But for me—being blind, old, and bereft of my son—what other path is there? Except the forest; O highly fortunate ones, you ought to permit me that. (15-13-20)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वे ते कुरुजाङ्गलाः। बाष्पसंदिग्धया वाचा रुरुदुर्भरतर्षभ ॥१५-१३-२१॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā sarve te kurujāṅgalāḥ। bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā vācā rurudur bharatarṣabha ॥15-13-21॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद्वचनं (tadvacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; कुरुजाङ्गलाः (kurujāṅgalāḥ) - the people of Kurujāṅgala; बाष्पसंदिग्धया (bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā) - by (their) tear-choked; वाचा (vācā) - voice; रुरुदुः (ruruduḥ) - wept; भरतरर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas;]
(Of him those words having heard all they Kurujāṅgalas by tear-choked voice wept O bull of the Bharatas.)
O bull of the Bharatas, all those Kurujāṅgalas, having heard his words, wept with voices choked by tears. (15-13-21)
तानविब्रुवतः किञ्चिद्दुःखशोकपरायणान्। पुनरेव महातेजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥१५-१३-२२॥
tāna-vibruvataḥ kiñcid-duḥkha-śoka-parāyaṇān। punar-eva mahā-tejā dhṛtarāṣṭro 'bravīd idam ॥15-13-22॥
[तान् (tān) - them; विब्रुवतः (vibruvataḥ) - not speaking; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; दुःखशोकपरायणान् (duḥkha-śoka-parāyaṇān) - absorbed in sorrow and grief; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; महातेजा (mahā-tejā) - the one of great energy; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Them not speaking, somewhat absorbed in sorrow and grief, again indeed the great energy Dhritarashtra said this.)
Seeing them silent and somewhat absorbed in sorrow and grief, the mighty Dhritarashtra again spoke as follows. (15-13-22)
