शन्तनुः पालयामास यथावत्पृथिवीमिमाम्। तथा विचित्रवीर्यश्च भीष्मेण परिपालितः ॥ पालयामास वस्तातो विदितं वो नसंशयः ॥१५-१४-१॥
śantanuḥ pālayāmāsa yathāvat pṛthivīm imām। tathā vicitravīryaś ca bhīṣmeṇa paripālitaḥ॥ pālayāmāsa vas tāto viditaṃ vo na saṃśayaḥ॥15-14-1॥

(Śantanu protected this earth properly. In the same way, Vicitravīrya was protected by Bhīṣma. Your father also protected (it), this is known to you, no doubt (about it). (15-14-1))
Śantanu properly protected this earth. Likewise, Vicitravīrya was protected by Bhīṣma. Your father too protected (it); this is well known to you, without any doubt. (15-14-1)
यथा च पाण्डुर्भ्राता मे दयितो भवतामभूत्। स चापि पालयामास यथावत्तच्च वेत्थ ह ॥१५-१४-२॥
yathā ca pāṇḍurbhrātā me dayito bhavatāmabhūt। sa cāpi pālayāmāsa yathāvattacca vettha ha ॥15-14-2॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; पाण्डुर्भ्राता (pāṇḍur-bhrātā) - Pāṇḍu's brother; मे (me) - my; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - dear; भवताम् (bhavatām) - to you (to you all); अभूत् (abhūt) - he was; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पालयामास (pālayāmāsa) - protected; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as is proper; तच्च (tac ca) - and that; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(As and Pāṇḍu's brother my dear to you all he was; he and also protected as is proper and that you know indeed;)
Just as my dear Pāṇḍu's brother was affectionate to you all, and he also protected (you) properly, that indeed you know. (15-14-2)
मया च भवतां सम्यक्छुश्रूषा या कृतानघाः। असम्यग्वा महाभागास्तत्क्षन्तव्यमतन्द्रितैः ॥१५-१४-३॥
mayā ca bhavatāṁ samyakśuśrūṣā yā kṛtānaghāḥ। asamyagvā mahābhāgāstatkṣantavyamatandritaiḥ ॥15-14-3॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; भवतां (bhavatām) - of/for you (all); सम्यक्-शुश्रूषा (samyak-śuśrūṣā) - proper service; proper attendance; या (yā) - which; कृता (kṛtā) - performed; done; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - O faultless ones; असम्यक्-वा (asamyak-vā) - improperly or; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - O greatly fortunate ones; तत्-क्षन्तव्यम् (tat-kṣantavyam) - that (is) to be forgiven; अतन्द्रितैः (atandritaiḥ) - by the vigilant (ones);]
(By me and of you, the proper service which is performed, O faultless ones, or if (it is) improper, O greatly fortunate ones—that (is) to be forgiven by the vigilant (ones).)
O faultless and greatly fortunate ones, whatever proper service I have rendered to you or, if anything was improper, that should be forgiven by you who are ever vigilant. (15-14-3)
यच्च दुर्योधनेनेदं राज्यं भुक्तमकण्टकम्। अपि तत्र न वो मन्दो दुर्बुद्धिरपराद्धवान् ॥१५-१४-४॥
yacca duryodhanenedaṁ rājyaṁ bhuktamakaṇṭakam। api tatra na vo mando durbuddhiraparāddhavān॥15-14-4॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; इदं (idaṁ) - this; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; भुक्तम् (bhuktam) - enjoyed; अकण्टकम् (akaṇṭakam) - without thorns (untroubled); अपि (api) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; वः (vaḥ) - your; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - dull; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - of poor understanding; अपराद्धवान् (aparāddhavān) - having committed offense;]
(Which and by Duryodhana this kingdom enjoyed without thorns; indeed there not your dull, of poor understanding, having committed offense;)
As for this kingdom, which Duryodhana has enjoyed without hindrance—even there, not one of your dull, misguided, or offending men was involved. (15-14-4)
तस्यापराधाद्दुर्बुद्धेरभिमानान्महीक्षिताम्। विमर्दः सुमहानासीदनयान्मत्कृतादथ ॥१५-१४-५॥
tasyāparādhād durbuddher abhimānān mahīkṣitām। vimardaḥ sumahān āsīd anayān matkṛtād atha ॥15-14-5॥
[तस्य अपराधात् (tasya aparādhāt) - from his offense; दुर्बुद्धेः (durbuddheḥ) - of the evil-minded; अभिमानात् (abhimānāt) - from pride; महीक्षिताम् (mahīkṣitām) - of the kings; विमर्दः (vimardaḥ) - conflict; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; आसीत् (āsīt) - arose; अनयात् (anayāt) - from wickedness; मत्कृतात् (matkṛtāt) - caused by me; अथ (atha) - then;]
(From his offense, of the evil-minded, from pride, of the kings, a very great conflict arose, from wickedness, caused by me, then.)
Because of his offense and the pride of the evil-minded kings, then a very great conflict arose from wickedness, caused by me. (15-14-5)
तन्मया साधु वापीदं यदि वासाधु वै कृतम्। तद्वो हृदि न कर्तव्यं मामनुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥१५-१४-६॥
tanmayā sādhu vāpīdaṁ yadi vāsādhu vai kṛtam। tadvo hṛdi na kartavyaṁ māmanujñātumarhatha ॥15-14-6॥
[तन्मया (tanmayā) - by me (that); साधु (sādhu) - properly; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; इदं (idaṁ) - this; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; असाधु (asādhu) - improperly; वै (vai) - indeed; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; तत् (tat) - that; वः (vaḥ) - of you; हृदि (hṛdi) - in heart; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be kept; माम् (mām) - me; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought;]
(By me, whether properly or even this, if or improperly indeed was done, that in your heart should not be kept; me to permit you ought.)
Whether this was done by me properly or improperly, you should not keep that in your hearts; you ought to permit me. (15-14-6)
वृद्धोऽयं हतपुत्रोऽयं दुःखितोऽयं जनाधिपः। पूर्वराज्ञां च पुत्रोऽयमिति कृत्वानुजानत ॥१५-१४-७॥
vṛddho'yaṃ hataputro'yaṃ duḥkhito'yaṃ janādhipaḥ। pūrvarājñāṃ ca putro'yamiti kṛtvānujānata ॥15-14-7॥
[वृद्धः (वृद्धः) (vṛddhaḥ) - aged; अयम् (अयम्) (ayam) - he; हतपुत्रः (हतपुत्रः) (hataputraḥ) - one whose son is dead; अयम् (अयम्) (ayam) - he; दुःखितः (दुःखितः) (duḥkhitaḥ) - sorrowful; अयम् (अयम्) (ayam) - he; जनाधिपः (जनाधिपः) (janādhipaḥ) - king; पूर्वराज्ञाम् (पूर्वराज्ञाम्) (pūrvarājñām) - of previous kings; च (च) (ca) - and; पुत्रः (पुत्रः) (putraḥ) - son; अयम् (अयम्) (ayam) - he; इति (इति) (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (कृत्वा) (kṛtvā) - having considered; अनुजानत् (अनुजानत्) (anujānata) - permit;]
(Aged he, one whose son is dead he, sorrowful he, king; of previous kings and son he—thus having considered, permit.)
Considering him as aged, bereaved of his son, afflicted with sorrow, a king, and also the son of former kings—thus, permit (him). (15-14-7)
इयं च कृपणा वृद्धा हतपुत्रा तपस्विनी। गान्धारी पुत्रशोकार्ता तुल्यं याचति वो मया ॥१५-१४-८॥
iyaṁ ca kṛpaṇā vṛddhā hataputrā tapasvinī। gāndhārī putraśokārtā tulyaṁ yācati vo mayā ॥15-14-8॥
[इयं (iyaṁ) - this (woman); च (ca) - and; कृपणा (kṛpaṇā) - miserable; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - aged; हतपुत्रा (hataputrā) - having lost sons; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - ascetic woman; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; पुत्रशोकार्ता (putraśokārtā) - afflicted with grief for her sons; तुल्यं (tulyaṁ) - equally; याचति (yācati) - begs; वः (vo) - from you; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(This, and miserable, aged, having lost sons, ascetic woman—Gandhari, afflicted with grief for her sons—equally begs from you by me.)
This miserable, aged, ascetic woman who has lost her sons—Gandhari, afflicted with the grief for her sons—now begs from you through me equally. (15-14-8)
हतपुत्राविमौ वृद्धौ विदित्वा दुःखितौ तथा। अनुजानीत भद्रं वो व्रजावः शरणं च वः ॥१५-१४-९॥
hataputrāv imau vṛddhau viditvā duḥkhitau tathā। anujānīta bhadraṃ vo vrajāvaḥ śaraṇaṃ ca vaḥ ॥15-14-9॥
[हतपुत्रौ (hataputrau) - with sons slain; इमौ (imau) - these two; वृद्धौ (vṛddhau) - elderly; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having understood; दुःखितौ (duḥkhitau) - distressed; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अनुजानीत (anujānīta) - permit; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - welfare; वः (vaḥ) - to you; व्रजावः (vrajāvaḥ) - let us go; शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - to you;]
(With sons slain, these two elderly, having understood, distressed likewise, permit. Welfare to you. Let us go, refuge and to you.)
Having understood that these two elderly are distressed and have lost their sons, allow us—welfare be to you—that we may go, seeking refuge with you. (15-14-9)
अयं च कौरवो राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। सर्वैर्भवद्भिर्द्रष्टव्यः समेषु विषमेषु च ॥ न जातु विषमं चैव गमिष्यति कदाचन ॥१५-१४-१०॥
ayaṃ ca kauravo rājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. sarvair bhavadbhir draṣṭavyaḥ sameṣu viṣameṣu ca ॥ na jātu viṣamaṃ caiva gamiṣyati kadācana ॥15-14-10॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - descendant of Kuru; राजा (rājā) - king; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (plural); द्रष्टव्यः (draṣṭavyaḥ) - to be regarded; समेषु (sameṣu) - in equal situations; विषमेषु (viṣameṣu) - in difficult situations; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - at any time; विषमं (viṣamam) - unfairness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will proceed; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time;]
(This and Kaurava king Kunti's son Yudhishthira by all you should be regarded in equal situations and in difficult situations. Not at any time to unfairness and indeed will proceed at any time.)
This king, the Kaurava and Kunti's son Yudhishthira, should be regarded by all of you in both favorable and unfavorable situations. He will never act with unfairness at any time. (15-14-10)
चत्वारः सचिवा यस्य भ्रातरो विपुलौजसः। लोकपालोपमा ह्येते सर्वे धर्मार्थदर्शिनः ॥१५-१४-११॥
catvāraḥ sacivā yasya bhrātaro vipulaujasaḥ। lokapālopamā hyete sarve dharmārthadarśinaḥ ॥15-14-11॥
[चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; सचिवाः (sacivāḥ) - ministers; यस्स्य (yasya) - whose; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; विपुलौजसः (vipulaujasaḥ) - of great strength; लोकपालोपमा (lokapālopamā) - like guardians of the world; हि (hi) - indeed; एते (ete) - these; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धर्मार्थदर्शिनः (dharmārthadarśinaḥ) - understanding righteousness and purpose;]
(Four ministers whose brothers of great strength, like guardians of the world indeed these all understanding righteousness and purpose.)
He has four ministers who are his brothers, all possessing great strength, all of whom are like the guardians of the world and who understand righteousness and purpose. (15-14-11)
ब्रह्मेव भगवानेष सर्वभूतजगत्पतिः। युधिष्ठिरो महातेजा भवतः पालयिष्यति ॥१५-१४-१२॥
brahmeva bhagavāneṣa sarvabhūtajagatpatiḥ. yudhiṣṭhiro mahātejā bhavataḥ pālayiṣyati ॥15-14-12॥
[ब्रह्मेव (brahma eva) - Brahma indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered lord; एष (eṣa) - he; सर्वभूतजगत्पतिः (sarvabhūtajagatpatiḥ) - the lord of all beings and the world; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great brilliance; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; पालयिष्यति (pālayiṣyati) - will protect;]
(Brahma indeed, the revered lord, he, the lord of all beings and the world; Yudhishthira, of great brilliance, of you, will protect.)
Yudhishthira, who is as the revered Brahma himself and the lord of all beings, endowed with great brilliance, will protect your people. (15-14-12)
अवश्यमेव वक्तव्यमिति कृत्वा ब्रवीमि वः। एष न्यासो मया दत्तः सर्वेषां वो युधिष्ठिरः ॥ भवन्तोऽस्य च वीरस्य न्यासभूता मया कृताः ॥१५-१४-१३॥
avaśyameva vaktavyamiti kṛtvā bravīmi vaḥ। eṣa nyāso mayā dattaḥ sarveṣāṃ vo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥ bhavanto'sya ca vīrasya nyāsabhūtā mayā kṛtāḥ ॥15-14-13॥
[अवश्यमेव (avaśyameva) - certainly indeed; वक्तव्यम् (vaktavyam) - to be spoken; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having considered; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; वः (vaḥ) - to you; एष (eṣa) - this; न्यासः (nyāsaḥ) - deposit; मया (mayā) - by me; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - given; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; वः (vaḥ) - of you; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (honorific); अस्य (asya) - of him; च (ca) - and; वीरस्य (vīrasya) - of the hero; न्यासभूताः (nyāsabhūtāḥ) - having the nature of deposit; मया (mayā) - by me; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made;]
(Certainly indeed, to be spoken thus having considered, I say to you. This deposit by me given, of all of you Yudhiṣṭhira. You, of him and of the hero, as deposit-having-become by me made. (15-14-13))
Having certainly decided that it must be spoken, I say to you: this Yudhiṣṭhira has been given by me as a deposit for all of you. And you all, too, have been entrusted by me as a deposit for this hero. (15-14-13)
यद्येव तैः कृतं किञ्चिद्व्यलीकं वा सुतैर्मम। यद्यन्येन मदीयेन तदनुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥१५-१४-१४॥
yadyeva taiḥ kṛtaṃ kiñcid vyalīkaṃ vā sutair mama| yady anyena madīyena tad anujñātum arhatha ॥15-14-14॥
[यद्येव (yadyeva) - if indeed; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; व्यलीकं (vyalīkam) - wrong; वा (vā) - or; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - by sons; मम (mama) - my; यद्यन्येन (yady anyena) - if by another; मदीयेन (madīyena) - by mine; तद् (tad) - that; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to allow; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought; ॥१५-१४-१४॥ (॥15-14-14॥) - ;]
(If indeed anything wrong has been done by them, by my sons, or if by another of mine, that you ought to allow.)
If indeed anything wrong has been done by them, my sons, or by any other of mine, you ought to pardon that. (15-14-14)
भवद्भिर्हि न मे मन्युः कृतपूर्वः कथञ्चन। अत्यन्तगुरुभक्तानामेषोऽञ्जलिरिदं नमः ॥१५-१४-१५॥
bhavadbhir hi na me manyuḥ kṛtapūrvaḥ kathañcana। atyantagurubhaktānāmeṣo'ñjalir idaṃ namaḥ ॥15-14-15॥
[भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; by your Honours; by you all; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; to me; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; कृतपूर्वः (kṛtapūrvaḥ) - done before; previously performed; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; ever; अत्यन्तगुरु (atyantaguru) - extremely venerable; supremely respected; भक्तानाम् (bhaktānām) - of the devotees; of the faithful; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; अञ्जलिः (añjaliḥ) - offering of folded hands; salutation gesture; इदं (idaṃ) - this; नमः (namaḥ) - obeisance; reverence;]
(By you indeed not my anger done before in any way. Of the extremely venerable devotees, this offering of folded hands, this obeisance.)
Indeed, I have never before felt any anger towards you in any way. To the supremely respected devotees, this is my salute and offering of folded hands. (15-14-15)
तेषामस्थिरबुद्धीनां लुब्धानां कामचारिणाम्। कृते याचामि वः सर्वान्गान्धारीसहितोऽनघाः ॥१५-१४-१६॥
teṣām asthirabuddhīnāṃ lubdhānāṃ kāmacāriṇām। kṛte yā cāmi vaḥ sarvān gāndhārī-sahito 'naghāḥ॥ 15-14-16॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of those; अस्थिरबुद्धीनां (asthira-buddhīnāṃ) - of the unsteady-minded; लुब्धानां (lubdhānāṃ) - of the greedy; कामचारिणाम् (kāma-cāriṇām) - moving according to desire; कृते (kṛte) - for the sake of; याचामि (yācāmi) - I ask; वः (vaḥ) - of you; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; गान्धारी-सहितः (gāndhārī-sahitaḥ) - together with Gandhari; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - O sinless ones;]
(Of those unsteady-minded, greedy, desire-moving ones, for the sake of (them) I ask all of you, together with Gandhari, O sinless ones.)
O sinless ones, for the sake of those with unsteady minds, greed, and acting as they please, I request all of you along with Gandhari. (15-14-16)
इत्युक्तास्तेन ते राज्ञा पौरजानपदा जनाः। नोचुर्बाष्पकलाः किञ्चिद्वीक्षां चक्रुः परस्परम् ॥१५-१४-१७॥
ityuktās tena te rājñā paurajanapadā janāḥ। nocur bāṣpakalāḥ kiñcid vīkṣāṃ cakruḥ parasparam ॥15-14-17॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - having been addressed; तेन (tena) - by him; ते (te) - those; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; पौरजानपदा (paurajanapadā) - city-dwellers and country-folk; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; नोचुः (nocuḥ) - did not speak; बाष्पकलाः (bāṣpakalāḥ) - choked with tears; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; वीक्षाम् (vīkṣām) - glance; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - did; परस्परम् (parasparam) - at each other;]
(Thus addressed by him, those people, city-dwellers and country-folk, by the king, did not speak, choked with tears, a little glance they did at each other.)
