ब्राह्मण उवाच॥
brāhmaṇa uvāca॥

(The Brāhmaṇa spoke;)
The Brāhmaṇa said.
न तद्दुर्योधनकृतं न च तद्भवता कृतम्। न कर्णसौबलाभ्यां च कुरवो यत्क्षयं गताः ॥१५-१६-१॥
na tad-duryodhanakṛtaṁ na ca tad-bhavatā kṛtam। na karṇasaubalābhyāṁ ca kuravo yat-kṣayaṁ gatāḥ ॥15-16-1॥
[न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; दुर्योधनकृतम् (duryodhana-kṛtam) - done by Duryodhana; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; न (na) - not; कर्णसौबलाभ्यां (karṇa-saubalābhyām) - by Karṇa and Saubala (Śakuni); च (ca) - and; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; यत् (yat) - because of which; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(Not that done by Duryodhana, nor that done by you; nor by Karṇa and Saubala and the Kurus, because of which destruction have gone.)
It was not done by Duryodhana, nor by you; nor by Karṇa or Saubala, nor was it the Kurus by whom they went to destruction (15-16-1).
दैवं तत्तु विजानीमो यन्न शक्यं प्रबाधितुम्। दैवं पुरुषकारेण न शक्यमतिवर्तितुम् ॥१५-१६-२॥
daivaṃ tat tu vijānīmo yan na śakyaṃ prabādhitum। daivaṃ puruṣakāreṇa na śakyam ativartitum ॥15-16-2॥
[दैवं (daivaṃ) - destiny; तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; विजानीमः (vijānīmaḥ) - we understand; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; प्रबाधितुम् (prabādhitum) - to overcome; दैवं (daivaṃ) - destiny; पुरुषकारेण (puruṣakāreṇa) - by human effort; न (na) - not; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; अतिवर्तितुम् (ativartitum) - to surpass;]
(Destiny, that indeed we understand which is not possible to overcome. Destiny by human effort is not possible to surpass.)
We know that destiny is what cannot be overcome; destiny cannot be surpassed by human effort. (15-16-2)
अक्षौहिण्यो महाराज दशाष्टौ च समागताः। अष्टादशाहेन हता दशभिर्योधपुङ्गवैः ॥१५-१६-३॥
akṣauhiṇyo mahārāja daśāṣṭau ca samāgatāḥ। aṣṭādaśāhena hatā daśabhir yodhapuṅgavaiḥ॥15-16-3॥
[अक्षौहिण्यः (akṣauhiṇyaḥ) - military divisions; (akṣauhiṇī, a large ancient Indian army unit); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; (vocative); दशाष्टौ (daśāṣṭau) - ten and eight; च (ca) - and; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; अष्टादश (aṣṭādaśa) - eighteen; अहेन (ahena) - by day; (instrumental singular of ahan, day); हता (hatā) - destroyed; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - by ten; योधपुङ्गवैः (yodhapuṅgavaiḥ) - by the foremost warriors;]
(O great king, ten and eight military divisions assembled. In eighteen days, destroyed by ten foremost warriors.)
O great king, eighteen military divisions assembled, and in eighteen days, they were destroyed by ten chief warriors. (15-16-3)
भीष्मद्रोणकृपाद्यैश्च कर्णेन च महात्मना। युयुधानेन वीरेण धृष्टद्युम्नेन चैव ह ॥१५-१६-४॥
bhīṣmadroṇakṛpādyaiś ca karṇena ca mahātmanā। yuyudhānena vīreṇa dhṛṣṭadyumnena caiva ha ॥15-16-4॥
[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; कृप (kṛpa) - Kripa; आद्यैः (ādyaiḥ) - and others, beginning with; च (ca) - and; कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karna; च (ca) - and; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; युयुधानेन (yuyudhānena) - by Yuyudhana; वीरेण (vīreṇa) - by the hero; धृष्टद्युम्नेन (dhṛṣṭadyumnena) - by Dhrishtadyumna; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily;]
(By Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa and the others, and by Karna, the great-souled one, by Yuyudhana, the hero, by Dhrishtadyumna, and indeed verily.)
By Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others, as well as by the great-hearted Karna, by the heroic Yuyudhana and Dhrishtadyumna too—all these were present. (15-16-4)
चतुर्भिः पाण्डुपुत्रैश्च भीमार्जुनयमैर्नृप। जनक्षयोऽयं नृपते कृतो दैवबलात्कृतैः ॥१५-१६-५॥
caturbhiḥ pāṇḍu-putraiś ca bhīma-arjuna-yamaiḥ nṛpa। jana-kṣayaḥ ayaṃ nṛpate kṛtaḥ daiva-balāt-kṛtaiḥ ॥15-16-5॥
[चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - by four; पाण्डुपुत्रैः (pāṇḍu-putraiḥ) - by the sons of Pāṇḍu; च (ca) - and; भीमार्जुनयमैः (bhīma-arjuna-yamaiḥ) - by Bhīma, Arjuna and Yama's son (i.e. Yudhiṣṭhira); नृप (nṛpa) - O king; जनक्षयः (jana-kṣayaḥ) - destruction of people; अयम् (ayam) - this; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done; दैवबलात्कृतैः (daiva-balāt-kṛtaiḥ) - accomplished by the force of fate;]
(By the four sons of Pāṇḍu and by Bhīma, Arjuna, and Yama's son, O king, this destruction of people has been done, O king, by those whose deeds are accomplished by the force of fate.)
O king, this destruction of people has been brought about by the four sons of Pāṇḍu—Bhīma, Arjuna, and the son of Yama—whose actions have been made possible by the power of fate. (15-16-5)
अवश्यमेव सङ्ग्रामे क्षत्रियेण विशेषतः। कर्तव्यं निधनं लोके शस्त्रेण क्षत्रबन्धुना ॥१५-१६-६॥
avaśyameva saṅgrāme kṣatriyeṇa viśeṣataḥ। kartavyaṃ nidhanaṃ loke śastreṇa kṣatrabandhunā॥15-16-6॥
[अवश्यमेव (avaśyameva) - certainly indeed; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; क्षत्रियेण (kṣatriyeṇa) - by a warrior of the kṣatriya class; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṃ) - should be done; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; लोके (loke) - in the world; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; क्षत्रबन्धुना (kṣatrabandhunā) - by a kṣatriya relative;]
(Certainly indeed, in battle, by a warrior of the kṣatriya class, especially, should be done death in the world, by weapon, by a kṣatriya relative.)
Certainly, especially in battle, death in the world ought to be inflicted by weapon by a kṣatriya, by a kṣatriya relative. (15-16-6)
तैरियं पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्विद्याबाहुबलान्वितैः। पृथिवी निहता सर्वा सहया सरथद्विपा ॥१५-१६-७॥
tairiyaṃ puruṣavyāghrair vidyā-bāhu-bala-anvitaiḥ। pṛthivī nihatā sarvā sahayā sarathadvipā॥15-16-7॥
[तैरियं (tairiyaṃ) - by courage; पुरुषव्याघ्रैः (puruṣavyāghraiḥ) - by men tigers (tiger-like men); विद्याबाहुबलान्वितैः (vidyā-bāhu-bala-anvitaiḥ) - endowed with knowledge, arm strength and power; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; निहता (nihatā) - subdued; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; सहया (sahayā) - with armies; सरथद्विपा (sarathadvipā) - with chariots and elephants;]
(By courage, by tiger-like men endowed with knowledge, arm strength, and power, the entire earth, along with armies, with chariots and elephants, was subdued.)
The entire earth, with its armies, chariots, and elephants, was conquered by courageous, tiger-like men possessing knowledge, strength, and power. (15-16-7)
न स राजापराध्नोति पुत्रस्तव महामनाः। न भवान्न च ते भृत्या न कर्णो न च सौबलः ॥१५-१६-८॥
na sa rājāparādhnoti putras tava mahāmanāḥ. na bhavān na ca te bhṛtyā na karṇo na ca saubalaḥ ॥15-16-8॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - the king; अपराध्नोति (aparādhnōti) - commits offense; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तव (tava) - of you; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; न (na) - not; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific singular); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; भृत्याः (bhṛtyāḥ) - servants; न (na) - not; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - Saubala (son of Subala, i.e., Śakuni);]
(Not he the king commits offense, son of you great-minded; not you, not and your servants, not Karṇa, not and Saubala.)
Your great-minded son, the king, does not commit any offense. Nor do you, nor your servants, nor Karṇa, nor Saubala. (15-16-8)
यद्विनष्टाः कुरुश्रेष्ठा राजानश्च सहस्रशः। सर्वं दैवकृतं तद्वै कोऽत्र किं वक्तुमर्हति ॥१५-१६-९॥
yad vinaṣṭāḥ kuruśreṣṭhā rājānaś ca sahasraśaḥ। sarvaṃ daivakṛtaṃ tad vai ko'tra kiṃ vaktum arhati ॥15-16-9॥
[यत् (yat) - that; विनष्टाः (vinaṣṭāḥ) - perished; कुरुश्रेष्ठाः (kuruśreṣṭhāḥ) - O best of Kurus; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; दैवकृतम् (daivakṛtam) - done by fate; तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who; अत्र (atra) - here; किम् (kim) - what; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to say; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy;]
(That have perished, O best of Kurus, kings and by thousands; all done by fate—that indeed, who here what to say is worthy?)
O best of Kurus, thousands of kings have perished; all of that was done by fate—who here is worthy to say anything about it? (15-16-9)
गुरुर्मतो भवानस्य कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभुः। धर्मात्मानमतस्तुभ्यमनुजानीमहे सुतम् ॥१५-१६-१०॥
gurur-mato bhavān asya kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhuḥ। dharmātmānam atas tubhyam anujānīmahe sutam ॥15-16-10॥
[गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; guide; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded as; considered as; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); अस्य (asya) - of this; कृत्स्नस्य (kṛtsnasya) - of the whole; of all; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; master; धर्मात्मानम् (dharmātmānam) - virtuous one; righteous being; अतः (atas) - therefore; तुभ्यम् (tubhyam) - to you; अनुजानीमहे (anujānīmahe) - we permit; we allow; सुतम् (sutam) - son;]
(Teacher regarded you of this whole world lord. Virtuous one therefore to you we permit son.)
We regard you as the teacher and lord of this entire world. Therefore, as you are righteous, we allow you the son. (15-16-10)
लभतां वीरलोकान्स ससहायो नराधिपः। द्विजाग्र्यैः समनुज्ञातस्त्रिदिवे मोदतां सुखी ॥१५-१६-११॥
labhatāṃ vīralokān sa-sahāyo narādhipaḥ। dvijāgryaiḥ samanujñātaḥ tridive modatāṃ sukhī ॥15-16-11॥
[लभतां (labhatāṃ) - may he obtain; वीरलोकान् (vīralokān) - hero-worlds; ससहायः (sa-sahāyaḥ) - with his companions; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the lord of men; द्विजाग्र्यैः (dvijāgryaiḥ) - by the best of Brāhmaṇas; समनुज्ञातः (samanujñātaḥ) - having been approved; त्रिदिवे (tridive) - in heaven; मोदतां (modatāṃ) - may he rejoice; सुखी (sukhī) - happy;]
(May the lord of men, with his companions, obtain the hero-worlds; having been approved by the best of Brāhmaṇas, may he, happy, rejoice in heaven.)
May the lord of men, together with his companions, attain the worlds of heroes; let him, approved by the foremost Brāhmaṇas, joyfully rejoice in heaven. (15-16-11)
प्राप्स्यते च भवान्पुण्यं धर्मे च परमां स्थितिम्। वेद पुण्यं च कार्त्स्न्येन सम्यग्भरतसत्तम ॥१५-१६-१२॥
prāpsyate ca bhavān puṇyaṃ dharme ca paramāṃ sthitim। veda puṇyaṃ ca kārtsnyena samyag bharatasattama ॥15-16-12॥
[प्राप्स्यते (prāpsyate) - will obtain; च (ca) - and; भवान् (bhavān) - you; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - merit; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; च (ca) - and; परमां (paramāṃ) - highest; स्थितिम् (sthitim) - state; वेद (veda) - (he) knows; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - merit; च (ca) - and; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - entirely; सम्यक् (samyak) - rightly; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(You will obtain merit and the highest state in dharma; (he) knows merit also entirely, rightly, O best of the Bharatas.)
You will attain merit and the highest position in dharma; and, O best of the Bharatas, (he) fully and rightly knows merit. (15-16-12)
दृष्टापदानाश्चास्माभिः पाण्डवाः पुरुषर्षभाः। समर्थास्त्रिदिवस्यापि पालने किं पुनः क्षितेः ॥१५-१६-१३॥
dṛṣṭāpadānāś cāsmābhiḥ pāṇḍavāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। samarthās tridivasya api pālane kiṃ punaḥ kṣiteḥ ॥15-16-13॥
[दृष्टापदानाः (dṛṣṭāpadānāḥ) - having seen the feet (of); च (ca) - and; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; समर्थाः (samarthāḥ) - capable; त्रिदिवस्य (tridivasya) - of heaven; अपि (api) - even; पालने (pālani) - in the protection (of); किं (kiṃ) - what (then); पुनः (punaḥ) - again, then; क्षितेः (kṣiteḥ) - of the earth;]
(Having seen (the) feet by us, the Pāṇḍavas, bulls among men, capable even in the protection of heaven, what then (to say of) the earth?)
Having seen by us the feet of the Pāṇḍavas, those bulls among men who are capable of protecting even heaven, what then to say of protecting the earth? (15-16-13)
अनुवत्स्यन्ति चापीमाः समेषु विषमेषु च। प्रजाः कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ पाण्डवाञ्शीलभूषणान् ॥१५-१६-१४॥
anuvatsyanti cā-pīmāḥ sameṣu viṣameṣu ca । prajāḥ kurukulaśreṣṭha pāṇḍavāñśīlabhūṣaṇān ॥15-16-14॥
[अनुवत्स्यन्ति (anuvatsyanti) - will follow after; they will imitate; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; समेषु (sameṣu) - in good times; in equal situations; विषमेषु (viṣameṣu) - in difficult times; in adverse situations; च (ca) - and; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; people; कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ (kurukulaśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kuru family; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; शीलभूषणान् (śīlabhūṣaṇān) - those adorned with virtue;]
(Will imitate and also these in good times, in difficult times, and subjects, O best of the Kuru family, the Pāṇḍavas, those adorned with virtue.)
O best of the Kuru family, the subjects will follow these Pāṇḍavas, who are adorned with virtue, in both prosperous and adverse times. (15-16-14)
ब्रह्मदेयाग्रहारांश्च परिहारांश्च पार्थिव। पूर्वराजातिसर्गांश्च पालयत्येव पाण्डवः ॥१५-१६-१५॥
brahmadeyāgrahārāṁś ca parihārāṁś ca pārthiva। pūrvarājātisargāṁś ca pālayaty eva pāṇḍavaḥ ॥15-16-15॥
[ब्रह्मदेय-अग्रहारान्-च (brahmadeya-agrahārān ca) - Brahmin endowments and land grants; and; परिहारान्-च (parihārān ca) - tax-free grants; and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; पूर्व-राज-अतिसर्गान्-च (pūrva-rāja-atisargān ca) - previous kings’ donations and bestowals; and; पालयति-एव (pālayati eva) - does indeed protect; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the descendant of Pandu;]
(Brahmin endowments and land grants and tax-free grants, O king, previous kings’ donations and bestowals, does indeed protect the descendant of Pandu.)
O king, the descendant of Pandu indeed protects the Brahmin endowments, the agrahāras, the tax-free grants, and the donations from previous kings. (15-16-15)
दीर्घदर्शी कृतप्रज्ञः सदा वैश्रवणो यथा। अक्षुद्रसचिवश्चायं कुन्तीपुत्रो महामनाः ॥१५-१६-१६॥
dīrghadarśī kṛtaprajñaḥ sadā vaiśravaṇo yathā। akṣudrasacivaścāyaṃ kuntīputro mahāmanāḥ॥15-16-16॥
[दीर्घदर्शी (dīrghadarśī) - far-seeing; कृतप्रज्ञः (kṛtaprajñaḥ) - grateful; सदा (sadā) - always; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera); यथा (yathā) - like; अक्षुद्रसचिवः (akṣudrasacivaḥ) - not having mean ministers; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayaṃ) - this; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kuntī; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(Far-seeing, grateful, always, like Vaiśravaṇa, not having mean ministers, and, this, son of Kuntī, great-minded.)
This son of Kuntī, like Vaiśravaṇa, is always far-seeing, grateful, attended by ministers who are not low, and is great-minded. (15-16-16)
अप्यमित्रे दयावांश्च शुचिश्च भरतर्षभ। ऋजु पश्यति मेधावी पुत्रवत्पाति नः सदा ॥१५-१६-१७॥
apyamitre dayāvāṁś ca śuciś ca bharatarṣabha। ṛju paśyati medhāvī putravat pāti naḥ sadā ॥15-16-17॥
[अपि (api) - even; अमित्रे (amitre) - towards enemy; दयावान् (dayāvān) - compassionate; च (ca) - and; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; ऋजु (ṛju) - straightforward; पश्यति (paśyati) - he regards; मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like a son; पाति (pāti) - he protects; नः (naḥ) - us; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Even towards enemy, compassionate and pure, O bull among the Bharatas, straightforward he regards, the wise (man), like a son, he always protects us.)
O best of Bharatas, the wise man, even towards an enemy, is compassionate and pure; he regards all with straightforwardness and always protects us like a son. (15-16-17)
विप्रियं च जनस्यास्य संसर्गाद्धर्मजस्य वै। न करिष्यन्ति राजर्षे तथा भीमार्जुनादयः ॥१५-१६-१८॥
vipriyaṃ ca janasya asya saṃsargāt dharmajasya vai। na kariṣyanti rājarṣe tathā bhīmārjunādayaḥ ॥15-16-18॥
[विप्रियं (vipriyaṃ) - unpleasant; undesirable; च (ca) - and; जनस्य (janasya) - of the people; अस्य (asya) - of him; of this; संसर्गात् (saṃsargāt) - on account of association; from company; धर्मजस्य (dharmajasya) - of Dharma's son; of Yudhiṣṭhira; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will do; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; तथा (tathā) - thus; so; भीमार्जुनादयः (bhīmārjunādayaḥ) - Bhīma, Arjuna, and others;]
(And the people, indeed, will not do anything unpleasant from association with Dharma's son, O royal sage, nor will Bhīma, Arjuna and the others do so thus.)
O royal sage, indeed, because of their association with Dharma's son, neither the people nor Bhīma, Arjuna, and the others will do anything unpleasant. (15-16-18)
मन्दा मृदुषु कौरव्यास्तीक्ष्णेष्वाशीविषोपमाः। वीर्यवन्तो महात्मानः पौराणां च हिते रताः ॥१५-१६-१९॥
mandā mṛduṣu kauravyās-tīkṣṇeṣv-āśīviṣopamāḥ. vīryavanto mahātmānaḥ paurāṇāṃ ca hite ratāḥ ॥15-16-19॥
[मन्दा (mandā) - mild; slow; gentle; मृदुषु (mṛduṣu) - towards the gentle; कौरव्याः (kauravyāḥ) - the Kauravas; descendants of Kuru; तीक्ष्णेषु (tīkṣṇeṣu) - towards the harsh; आशीविषोपमाः (āśīviṣopamāḥ) - like poisonous serpents; वीर्यवन्तः (vīryavantaḥ) - powerful; endowed with strength; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; पौराणां (paurāṇām) - of the citizens; च (ca) - and; हिते (hite) - in the welfare; रताः (ratāḥ) - delighted; devoted;]
(Mild towards the gentle, the Kauravas like poisonous serpents towards the harsh; powerful, great-souled ones, and devoted in the welfare of the citizens.)
The Kauravas are gentle towards the mild but like poisonous serpents towards the harsh; they are powerful, noble-hearted, and dedicated to the welfare of the citizens. (15-16-19)
न कुन्ती न च पाञ्चाली न चोलूपी न सात्वती। अस्मिञ्जने करिष्यन्ति प्रतिकूलानि कर्हिचित् ॥१५-१६-२०॥
na kuntī na ca pāñcālī na ca ulūpī na sātvatī। asmin jane kariṣyanti pratikūlāni karhicit॥15-16-20॥
[न (na) - not; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - Pāñcālī; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उलूपी (ulūpī) - Ulūpī; न (na) - not; सात्वती (sātvati) - Sātvati; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; जने (jane) - person; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will do; प्रतिकूलानि (pratikūlāni) - contrary actions; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time;]
(Not Kuntī, not Pāñcālī, not Ulūpī, not Sātvati, in this person will do contrary actions at any time.)
Neither Kuntī nor Pāñcālī, nor Ulūpī, nor Sātvati will ever act contrary to this person. (15-16-20)
भवत्कृतमिमं स्नेहं युधिष्ठिरविवर्धितम्। न पृष्ठतः करिष्यन्ति पौरजानपदा जनाः ॥१५-१६-२१॥
bhavatkṛtam imaṁ snehaṁ yudhiṣṭhira-vivardhitam। na pṛṣṭhataḥ kariṣyanti paura-jānapadā janāḥ॥15-16-21॥
[भवत्कृतम् (bhavat-kṛtam) - done by you; इमम् (imam) - this; स्नेहम् (sneham) - affection; युधिष्ठिरविवर्धितम् (yudhiṣṭhira-vivardhitam) - increased by Yudhishthira; न (na) - not; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind your back; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - they will do; पौरजानपदा (paura-jānapadā) - townspeople and country people; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(This affection, done by you and increased by Yudhishthira, the people, both townspeople and country people, will not do (show) behind your back.)
The affection you have shown, strengthened by Yudhishthira, the people—both of the town and country—will not display behind your back. (15-16-21)
अधर्मिष्ठानपि सतः कुन्तीपुत्रा महारथाः। मानवान्पालयिष्यन्ति भूत्वा धर्मपरायणाः ॥१५-१६-२२॥
adharmiṣṭhān api sataḥ kuntīputrā mahārathāḥ। mānavān pālayiṣyanti bhūtvā dharmaparāyaṇāḥ॥15-16-22॥
[अधर्मिष्ठान् (adharmiṣṭhān) - those established in unrighteousness; अपि (api) - even; सतः (sataḥ) - existing; कुन्तीपुत्राः (kuntīputrāḥ) - sons of Kunti; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; मानवान् (mānavān) - human beings; पालयिष्यन्ति (pālayiṣyanti) - will protect; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; धर्मपरायणाः (dharmaparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to righteousness;]
(Even those established in unrighteousness, the sons of Kunti, the great chariot-warriors, having become devoted to righteousness, will protect human beings.)
Even those who were established in unrighteousness, the sons of Kunti—the great warriors—having become devoted to righteousness, will protect mankind. (15-16-22)
स राजन्मानसं दुःखमपनीय युधिष्ठिरात्। कुरु कार्याणि धर्म्याणि नमस्ते भरतर्षभ ॥१५-१६-२३॥
sa rājan mānasaṃ duḥkham apanīya yudhiṣṭhirāt। kuru kāryāṇi dharmyāṇi namas te bharatarṣabha ॥15-16-23॥
[स (sa) - he; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मानसं (mānasaṃ) - mental; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; अपनीय (apanīya) - removing; युधिष्ठिरात् (yudhiṣṭhirāt) - from Yudhiṣṭhira; कुरु (kuru) - do; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - duties; धर्म्याणि (dharmyāṇi) - righteous; नमः (namaḥ) - obeisance; ते (te) - to you; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(He, O king, having removed the mental sorrow from Yudhiṣṭhira, do righteous duties. Obeisance to you, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O king, after relieving Yudhiṣṭhira of his mental sorrow, perform righteous duties. Salutations to you, O best of the Bharatas. (15-16-23)

tasya tadvacanaṃ dharmyamanubandhaguṇottaram. sādhu sādhviti sarvaḥ sa janaḥ pratigṛhītavān ॥15-16-24॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; अनुबन्धगुणोत्तरम् (anubandhaguṇottaram) - excellent in the quality of consequence; साधु (sādhu) - well done; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; स (sa) - that; जनः (janaḥ) - people; प्रतिगृहीतवान् (pratigṛhītavān) - accepted;]
(Of him, that speech, righteous, excellent in the quality of consequence. "Well done, well done," thus all that people accepted.)
All the people accepted his words, which were righteous and of excellent consequence, saying, "Well done, well done." (15-16-24)
धृतराष्ट्रश्च तद्वाक्यमभिपूज्य पुनः पुनः। विसर्जयामास तदा सर्वास्तु प्रकृतीः शनैः ॥१५-१६-२५॥
dhṛtarāṣṭraś ca tadvākyam abhipūjya punaḥ punaḥ। visarjayāmāsa tadā sarvās tu prakṛtīḥ śanaiḥ॥15-16-25॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; च (ca) - and; तद्वाक्यम् (tadvākyam) - that speech; अभिपूज्य (abhipūjya) - having honored; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; विसर्जयामास (visarjayāmāsa) - sent away; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; तु (tu) - indeed; प्रकृतीः (prakṛtīḥ) - princes (ministers); शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly;]

स तैः सम्पूजितो राजा शिवेनावेक्षितस्तदा। प्राञ्जलिः पूजयामास तं जनं भरतर्षभ ॥१५-१६-२६॥

(He, having been honored by them, the king, having been seen by Śiva then, with joined palms, worshipped that person, O bull among Bharatas.)

ततो विवेश भुवनं गान्धार्या सहितो नृपः। व्युष्टायां चैव शर्वर्यां यच्चकार निबोध तत् ॥१५-१६-२७॥
tato viveśa bhuvanaṃ gāndhāryā sahito nṛpaḥ। vyuṣṭāyāṃ caiva śarvaryāṃ yaccakāra nibodha tat ॥15-16-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; भुवनम् (bhuvanam) - palace; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - with Gāndhārī; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; व्युष्टायाम् (vyuṣṭāyām) - when dawned; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शर्वर्याम् (śarvaryām) - night; यत् (yat) - what; चकार (cakāra) - did; निबोध (nibodha) - know; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Then the king, accompanied by Gāndhārī, entered the palace; and when the night had indeed dawned, know that which he did.)
