bhīmasenavākyam
The speech of Bhīmasena;
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said;
vyuṣitāyāṃ rajanyāṃ tu dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ। viduraṃ preṣayāmāsa yudhiṣṭhiraniveśanam ॥15-17-1॥
After the night had passed, Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, sent Vidura to Yudhishthira's residence. (15-17-1)
sa gatvā rājavačanāduvācācyutamīśvaram। yudhiṣṭhiraṃ mahātejāḥ sarvabuddhimatāṃ varaḥ ॥15-17-2॥
He, having gone on the king’s command, spoke to Acyuta (the lord), and to Yudhiṣṭhira, who is possessed of great splendor and is the foremost among all wise men. (15-17-2)
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahārāja vanavāsāya dīkṣitaḥ। gamiṣyati vanaṃ rājan kārttikīm āgatām imām॥15-17-3॥
Dhritarashtra, the great king, having been consecrated for forest dwelling, O king, will go to the forest when this month of Kārttikī has arrived. (15-17-3)
sa tvā kurukulaśreṣṭha kiñcidartham abhīpsati। śrāddham icchati dātuṃ sa gāṅgeyasya mahātmanaḥ ॥15-17-4॥
He, O best of the Kuru family, desires something from you; he wishes to perform a śrāddha offering for the great-souled Gāṅgeya. (15-17-4)
droṇasya somadattasya bāhlīkasya ca dhīmataḥ। putrāṇāṃ caiva sarveṣāṃ ye cāsya suhṛdo hatāḥ॥ yadi cābhyanujānīṣe saindhavāpasadasya ca॥15-17-5॥
If you also permit, of Droṇa, Somadatta, Bāhlīka and the wise, all their sons and those friends of his who have been slain, and of the outcaste of Sindhu as well. (15-17-5)
etac chrutvā tu vacanaṁ vidurasya yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। hṛṣṭaḥ sampūjayāmāsa guḍākeśaś ca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥15-17-6॥
Having heard these words of Vidura, Yudhishthira, gladdened, honored him, and so did Guḍākeśa, the Pāṇḍava. (15-17-6)
na tu bhīmo dṛḍhakrodhastadvaco jagṛhe tadā। vidurasya mahātejā duryodhanakṛtaṃ smaran ॥15-17-7॥
But Bhima, firm in anger, did not accept those words at that time, remembering the act done by Duryodhana towards the greatly energetic Vidura. (15-17-7)
abhiprāyaṃ viditvā tu bhīmasenasya phalgunaḥ। kirīṭī kiñcidānamya bhīmaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥15-17-8॥
But Phalguna (Arjuna), the one with a crown, having understood the intention of Bhīmasena, slightly bowed and spoke these words to Bhīma. (15-17-8)
bhīma rājā pitā vṛddho vanavāsāya dīkṣitaḥ। dātum icchati sarveṣāṃ suhṛdām aurdhvadehikam ॥15-17-9॥
The formidable king, the aged father, having undertaken initiation for dwelling in the forest, wishes to bestow the post-funeral offerings for all his friends. (15-17-9)
bhavatā nirjitaṃ vittaṃ dātum icchati kauravaḥ। bhīṣmādīnāṃ mahābāho tad anujñātum arhasi ॥15-17-10॥
The Kaurava desires to give the wealth won by you. O mighty-armed, you should permit that on behalf of Bhishma and the others. (15-17-10)
diṣṭyā tvadya mahābāho dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ prayācati। yācito yaḥ purāsmābhiḥ paśya kālasya paryayam ॥15-17-11॥
By good fortune today, O mighty-armed one, Dhṛtarāṣṭra is asking (for something); he who was previously implored by us—see the change that time brings. (15-17-11)
yo'sau pṛthivyāḥ kṛtsnāyā bhartā bhūtvā narādhipaḥ। parair vinihatāpatyo vanaṃ gantum abhīpsati ॥15-17-12॥
That king, who was the protector of the whole earth, his sons slain by others, now desires to go to the forest. (15-17-12)
mā te'anyatpuruṣavyāghra dānādbhavatu darśanam। ayaśasyamato'nyatsyādadharmyaṃ ca mahābhuja ॥15-17-13॥
O tiger among men, let there not be for you any sight except giving; otherwise, there may arise disgrace and unrighteousness, O mighty-armed. (15-17-13)
rājānam upatiṣṭhasva jyeṣṭhaṃ bhrātaram īśvaram। arhastvam asi dātuṃ vai nādātuṃ bharatarṣabha॥ evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ kaunteyaṃ dharmarājo'bhyapūjayat॥15-17-14॥
“Approach the king, your eldest brother and master; you are indeed worthy to bestow, not to refuse, O bull among the Bharatas.” Thus, as he was saying this to Kaunteya, the righteous king honored him. (15-17-14)
bhīmasenastu sakrodhaḥ provācedaṁ vacastadā। vayaṁ bhīṣmasya kurmeha pretakāryāṇi phalguna ॥15-17-15॥
But Bhīmasena, filled with anger, then said these words: O Phālguna, let us perform the funeral rites of Bhīṣma here. (15-17-15)
somadattasya nṛpater bhūriśravasa eva ca। bāhlīkasya ca rājarṣer droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ ॥15-17-16॥
Of Somadatta the king, Bhūriśravā, Bāhlīka, the royal sage, and the great-souled Droṇa. (15-17-16)
anyeṣāṃ caiva suhṛdāṃ kuntī karṇāya dāsyati। śrāddhāni puruṣavyāghra mādātkauravako nṛpaḥ ॥15-17-17॥
Kuntī will perform the śrāddha ceremonies for Karṇa as well as for the other friends, and the Kaurava king will take the offerings from me, O tiger among men. (15-17-17)
iti me vartate buddhiḥ mā vo nandantu śatravaḥ। kaṣṭāt kaṣṭataraṃ yāntu sarve duryodhanādayaḥ॥ yair iyaṃ pṛthivī sarvā ghātitā kulapāṃsanaiḥ॥15-17-18॥
Thus is my thought: let not your enemies rejoice. May Duryodhana and all his party, who destroyed this entire earth like disgraces of their family, go from hardship to even greater hardship. (15-17-18)
kutastvamadya vismṛtya vairaṃ dvādaśavārṣikam। ajñātavāsa-gamanaṃ draupadī-śoka-vardhanam ॥ kva tadā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya sneho'smāsvabhavattadā ॥15-17-19॥
How is it that today you have forgotten the twelve-year enmity, the incognito exile, and the grief increased for Draupadī? Where was Dhṛtarāṣṭra's affection for us at that time? (15-17-19)
kṛṣṇājinopasaṃvīto hṛtābharaṇabhūṣaṇaḥ। sārdhaṃ pāñcālaputryā tvaṃ rājānamupajagmivān। kva tadā droṇabhīṣmau tau somadatto'pi vābhavat॥15-17-20॥
Wearing a black antelope skin, stripped of ornaments and jewels, together with the daughter of the Pāñcāla, you approached the king. Where were Droṇa and Bhīṣma then, or even Somadatta? (15-17-20)
yatra trayodaśa samā vane vanyena jīvasi। na tadā tvā pitā jyeṣṭhaḥ pitṛtvenābhivīkṣate॥15-17-21॥
Where you live for thirteen years in the forest on forest foods, then your father, the elder, does not look upon you as a son. (15-17-21)
kiṁ te tadvismṛtaṁ pārtha yadeṣa kulapāṁsanaḥ। durvṛtto viduraṁ prāha dyūte kiṁ jitamityuta ॥15-17-22॥
Do you not remember, O Pārtha, that which this disgrace of the family, the wicked one, said to Vidura in the game of dice: "What was won?" (15-17-22)
tam evaṃ-vādinam rājā kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। uvāca bhrātaram dhīmān joṣam āsv iti bhartsayan ॥15-17-23॥
As he was speaking thus, King Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, rebuked his wise brother, saying, ‘Have patience.’ (15-17-23)
