कुन्त्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा पाण्डवा राजसत्तम। व्रीडिताः संन्यवर्तन्त पाञ्चाल्या सहितानघाः ॥१५-२४-१॥
kuntyāstu vacanaṁ śrutvā pāṇḍavā rajasattama। vrīḍitāḥ samnyavartanta pāñcālyā sahitānaghāḥ ॥15-24-1॥
[कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kuntī; तु (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; व्रीडिताः (vrīḍitāḥ) - ashamed; संन्यवर्तन्त (samnyavartanta) - they withdrew; पाञ्चाल्या (pāñcālyā) - with Draupadī; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - sinless ones;]
(Of Kuntī but word having heard, the Pāṇḍavas, O best of kings, ashamed, they withdrew, with Draupadī together, sinless ones.)
But, O best of kings, hearing the words of Kuntī, the sinless Pāṇḍavas, together with Draupadī, withdrew in shame. (15-24-1)
ततः शब्दो महानासीत्सर्वेषामेव भारत। अन्तःपुराणां रुदतां दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीं तथागताम् ॥१५-२४-२॥
tataḥ śabdo mahān āsīt sarveṣām eva bhārata। antaḥpurāṇāṃ rudatāṃ dṛṣṭvā kuntīṃ tathāgatām ॥15-24-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; महान् (mahān) - great; आसीत् (āsīt) - arose; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अन्तःपुराणाम् (antaḥpurāṇām) - of the inner chambers; रुदताम् (rudatām) - of those weeping; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - Kuntī; तथा (tathā) - thus; आगताम् (āgatām) - who had come;]
(Then a great sound arose of all, indeed, O Bhārata; having seen Kuntī, who had come thus, of the weeping women of the inner chambers.)
Then, O Bhārata, a great clamor arose among all, when the women of the inner chambers who were weeping saw Kuntī, who had just arrived. (15-24-2)
प्रदक्षिणमथावृत्य राजानं पाण्डवास्तदा। अभिवाद्य न्यवर्तन्त पृथां तामनिवर्त्य वै ॥१५-२४-३॥
pradakṣiṇam athāvṛtya rājānaṃ pāṇḍavās tadā। abhivādya nyavartanta pṛthāṃ tām anivartya vai॥15-24-3॥
[प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - to the right side; in a circle; around; clockwise; अथ (atha) - then; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having encircled; having gone around; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; (sons of Pāṇḍu); तदा (tadā) - at that time; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; having respectfully greeted; न्यवर्तन्त (nyavartanta) - turned back; withdrew; पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā (Kuntī, their mother); ताम् (tām) - her; अनिवर्त्य (anivartya) - without making turn back; not letting return; वै (vai) - indeed; truly;]
(Having gone around to the right side, then, the Pāṇḍavas, at that time, having saluted the king, withdrew, without making Pṛthā, her, turn back, indeed.)
At that time, the Pāṇḍavas circumambulated the king to the right and, after saluting him, withdrew, not making Pṛthā (Kuntī) turn back, indeed. (15-24-3)
ततोऽब्रवीन्महाराजो धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः। गान्धारीं विदुरं चैव समाभाष्य निगृह्य च ॥१५-२४-४॥
tato'bravīn mahārājo dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ. gāndhārīṃ viduraṃ caiva samābhāṣya nigṛhya ca ॥15-24-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; महाराजः (mahārājaḥ) - the great king; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अम्बिकासुतः (ambikāsutaḥ) - son of Ambika; गान्धारीम् (gāndhārīm) - to Gandhari; विदुरम् (viduram) - to Vidura; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समाभाष्य (samābhāṣya) - having addressed (them); निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having restrained; च (ca) - and;]
(Thereafter spoke the great king Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, to Gandhari and Vidura, having addressed (them) and having restrained (them) indeed.)
Then the great king Dhritarashtra, son of Ambika, spoke to Gandhari and Vidura, after addressing and restraining them. (15-24-4)
युधिष्ठिरस्य जननी देवी साधु निवर्त्यताम्। यथा युधिष्ठिरः प्राह तत्सर्वं सत्यमेव हि ॥१५-२४-५॥
yudhiṣṭhirasya jananī devī sādhu nivartyatām। yathā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāha tatsarvaṃ satyameva hi ॥15-24-5॥
[युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; जननी (jananī) - mother; देवी (devī) - lady; साधु (sādhu) - well; निवर्त्यताम् (nivartyatām) - let (her) be called back; यथा (yathā) - as; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; प्राह (prāha) - said; तत्सर्वं (tatsarvaṃ) - all that; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - true; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for;]
(The mother of Yudhiṣṭhira, the lady, let her indeed be called back well. As Yudhiṣṭhira said, all that is true indeed for.)
Let the mother of Yudhiṣṭhira, the lady, be respectfully called back. All that Yudhiṣṭhira said is indeed true. (15-24-5)
पुत्रैश्वर्यं महदिदमपास्य च महाफलम्। का नु गच्छेद्वनं दुर्गं पुत्रानुत्सृज्य मूढवत् ॥१५-२४-६॥
putraiśvaryaṃ mahadidam apāsya ca mahāphalam। kā nu gacched vanaṃ durgaṃ putrān utsṛjya mūḍhavat ॥15-24-6॥
[पुत्रैश्वर्यं (putraiśvaryaṃ) - sons and sovereignty; महत् (mahat) - great; इदम् (idam) - this; अपास्य (apāsya) - having abandoned; च (ca) - and; महाफलम् (mahāphalam) - great benefit; का (kā) - which woman; नु (nu) - indeed; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would go; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; दुर्गम् (durgam) - inaccessible (place); पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; मूढवत् (mūḍhavat) - like a deluded one;]
(Sons and sovereignty, great—this having abandoned and great benefit, which woman indeed would go to the forest, inaccessible (place), abandoning sons, like a deluded one?)
Having given up sons and great sovereignty, and abandoning great benefit, which woman indeed would go into the difficult forest, abandoning her sons like one bewildered? (15-24-6)
राज्यस्थया तपस्तप्तं दानं दत्तं व्रतं कृतम्। अनया शक्यमद्येह श्रूयतां च वचो मम ॥१५-२४-७॥
rājyasthayā tapastaptaṃ dānaṃ dattaṃ vrataṃ kṛtam। anayā śakyam adya iha śrūyatāṃ ca vaco mama ॥15-24-7॥
[राज्यस्थया (rājyasthayā) - by her who remains in the kingdom; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तप्तम् (taptam) - performed; दानम् (dānam) - charity; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; कृतम् (kṛtam) - undertaken; अनया (anayā) - by her; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; च (ca) - and; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मम (mama) - my;]
(By her who remains in the kingdom, austerity was performed, charity was given, vow was undertaken. By her, it is possible today here; let my word also be heard.)
She who has remained in the kingdom has performed austerities, given charity, and undertaken vows. By her, it is possible today; now let my word also be heard. (15-24-7)
गान्धारि परितुष्टोऽस्मि वध्वाः शुश्रूषणेन वै। तस्मात्त्वमेनां धर्मज्ञे समनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१५-२४-८॥
gāndhāri parituṣṭo'smi vadhvāḥ śuśrūṣaṇena vai. tasmāttvam enāṃ dharmajñe samanujñātum arhasi ॥15-24-8॥
[गान्धारि (gāndhāri) - O Gāndhārī; परितुष्टः (parituṣṭaḥ) - fully satisfied; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वध्वाः (vadhvāḥ) - by the daughter-in-law; शुश्रूषणेन (śuśrūṣaṇena) - by service; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एनाम् (enām) - her; धर्मज्ञे (dharmajñe) - O knower of dharma; समनुज्ञातुम् (samanujñātum) - to fully permit; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(O Gāndhārī, fully satisfied I am by the daughter-in-law's service indeed. Therefore, you, O knower of dharma, ought to fully permit her.)
O Gāndhārī, I am indeed fully satisfied with the daughter-in-law's service. Therefore, O knower of dharma, you ought to grant her full permission. (15-24-8)
इत्युक्ता सौबलेयी तु राज्ञा कुन्तीमुवाच ह। तत्सर्वं राजवचनं स्वं च वाक्यं विशेषवत् ॥१५-२४-९॥
ityuktā saubaleyī tu rājñā kuntīm uvāca ha। tatsarvaṁ rājavacanaṁ svaṁ ca vākyaṁ viśeṣavat ॥15-24-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - having been spoken; having been addressed; सौबलेयी (saubaleyī) - Saubali's daughter; तु (tu) - but; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - to Kuntī; उवाच (uvāca) - she said; ह (ha) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; राजवचनं (rājavacanaṁ) - the king's words; स्वं (svaṁ) - her own; च (ca) - and; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - speech; विशेषवत् (viśeṣavat) - especially; particularly;]
(Thus having been addressed, Saubali's daughter, but, by the king, to Kuntī, she said indeed. That all, the king's words, her own and speech, especially.)
Thus addressed by the king, Saubali's daughter (Gāndhārī) spoke to Kuntī. She especially expressed all the king's words and her own speech. (15-24-9)
न च सा वनवासाय देवीं कृतमतिं तदा। शक्नोत्युपावर्तयितुं कुन्तीं धर्मपरां सतीम् ॥१५-२४-१०॥
na ca sā vanavāsāya devīṃ kṛtamatim tadā। śaknotyupāvartayituṃ kuntīṃ dharmaparāṃ satīm ॥15-24-10॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; वनवासाय (vanavāsāya) - to (for) forest-dwelling; देवीं (devīṃ) - the noble lady; कृतमतिं (kṛtamatim) - having made up her mind; तदा (tadā) - then; शक्नोति (śaknoti) - is able; उपावर्तयितुं (upāvartayitum) - to turn back; कुन्तीम् (kuntīm) - Kuntī; धर्मपराम् (dharmaparām) - devoted to dharma; सतीम् (satīm) - virtuous;]
(And not she for forest-dwelling, the noble lady, having made up her mind, then is able to turn back Kuntī, devoted to dharma, virtuous.)
And at that time, she is not able to turn back Kuntī, the noble lady who had made up her mind for the forest, who was devoted to dharma and virtuous. (15-24-10)
तस्यास्तु तं स्थिरं ज्ञात्वा व्यवसायं कुरुस्त्रियः। निवृत्तांश्च कुरुश्रेष्ठान्दृष्ट्वा प्ररुरुदुस्तदा ॥१५-२४-११॥
tasyāstu taṃ sthiraṃ jñātvā vyavasāyaṃ kurustriyaḥ। nivṛttāṃś ca kuruśreṣṭhān dṛṣṭvā prarurudus tadā ॥15-24-11॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; (genitive singular, feminine) तु (tu) - however; तं (taṃ) - that; (accusative singular, masculine) स्थिरं (sthiraṃ) - firm; steady; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; having realized; व्यवसायं (vyavasāyaṃ) - resolve; determination; कुरु (kuru) - Kuru (of the Kuru clan); स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; निवृत्तान् (nivṛttān) - retreated; withdrawn; च (ca) - and; कुरुश्रेष्ठान् (kuruśreṣṭhān) - the best among the Kurus; noble Kurus; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्ररुरुदुः (praruruduḥ) - wept aloud; cried; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(However, having known her firm resolve, the Kuru women, and having seen the noble Kurus who had withdrawn, then wept aloud.)
However, when the Kuru women saw her firm resolve and the noble Kurus who had withdrawn, they broke into loud weeping. (15-24-11)
उपावृत्तेषु पार्थेषु सर्वेष्वन्तःपुरेषु च। ययौ राजा महाप्राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रो वनं तदा ॥१५-२४-१२॥
upāvṛtteṣu pārtheṣu sarveṣv antaḥpureṣu ca। yayau rājā mahāprājño dhṛtarāṣṭro vanaṃ tadā॥15-24-12॥
[उपावृत्तेषु (upāvṛtteṣu) - having withdrawn; (locative plural); पार्थेषु (pārtheṣu) - among the sons of Pṛthā; (locative plural); सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all (of them); (locative plural); अन्तःपुरेषु (antaḥpureṣu) - in the inner apartments; (locative plural); च (ca) - and; ययौ (yayau) - he went; राजा (rājā) - the king; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - greatly wise; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; वनम् (vanam) - the forest; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(When all the sons of Pṛthā had withdrawn, and in all the inner apartments also, the greatly wise king Dhṛtarāṣṭra went to the forest then.)
At that time, when all the Pāṇḍavas had withdrawn and all the inner apartments likewise, the greatly wise king Dhṛtarāṣṭra went to the forest. (15-24-12)
पाण्डवा अपि दीनास्ते दुःखशोकपरायणाः। यानैः स्त्रीसहिताः सर्वे पुरं प्रविविशुस्तदा ॥१५-२४-१३॥
pāṇḍavā api dīnāste duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ। yānaiḥ strīsahitāḥ sarve puraṃ praviviśustadā॥15-24-13॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; अपि (api) - also; दीनाः (dīnāḥ) - dejected; ते (te) - they; दुःखशोकपरायणाः (duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇāḥ) - given over to sorrow and grief; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - by vehicles; स्त्रीसहिताः (strīsahitāḥ) - together with women; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पुरम् (puram) - city; प्रविविशुः (praviviśuḥ) - entered; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The Pāṇḍavas also, dejected, they given over to sorrow and grief, by vehicles, together with women, all, city entered, then.)
The Pāṇḍavas, too, dejected and wholly given over to sorrow and grief, all entered the city along with the women in vehicles at that time. (15-24-13)
तदहृष्टमिवाकूजं गतोत्सवमिवाभवत्। नगरं हास्तिनपुरं सस्त्रीवृद्धकुमारकम् ॥१५-२४-१४॥
tad ahṛṣṭam ivākūjaṃ gatotsavam ivābhavat। nagaraṃ hāstinapuraṃ sa-strī-vṛddha-kumārakam ॥15-24-14॥
[तत् (tad) - that; अहृष्टम् (ahṛṣṭam) - joyless; इव (iva) - like; अकूजम् (akūjam) - silent (without rejoicing noises); गत-उत्सवम् (gata-utsavam) - having lost festivity; इव (iva) - as if; आभवत् (ābhavat) - became; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; हास्तिनपुरम् (hāstinapuram) - Hastinapura; स-स्त्री-वृद्ध-कुमारकम् (sa-strī-vṛddha-kumārakam) - with women, elders, and youths;]
(That joyless, as if silent, having lost festivity as if became; city Hastinapura with women, elders, and youths.)
That city of Hastinapura, with its women, elders, and children, became joyless, seemingly silent, as if all festivity had departed. (15-24-14)
सर्वे चासन्निरुत्साहाः पाण्डवा जातमन्यवः। कुन्त्या हीनाः सुदुःखार्ता वत्सा इव विनाकृताः ॥१५-२४-१५॥
sarve cāsannirutsāhāḥ pāṇḍavā jātamanyavaḥ। kuntyā hīnāḥ suduḥkhārtā vatsā iva vinākṛtāḥ॥15-24-15॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; आसन् (āsan) - were; निरुत्साहाः (nirutsāhāḥ) - devoid of enthusiasm; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; जातमन्यवः (jātamanyavaḥ) - with arisen anger; कुन्त्या (kuntyā) - from Kuntī; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - bereft; सुदुःखार्ताः (suduḥkhārtāḥ) - afflicted with great pain; वत्साः (vatsāḥ) - calves; इव (iva) - like; विनाकृताः (vinākṛtāḥ) - left without (the mother);]
(All and were devoid of enthusiasm, the Pāṇḍavas, with arisen anger; from Kuntī bereft, greatly afflicted by pain, (like) calves left without (their mother).)
All the Pāṇḍavas, utterly dispirited, filled with anger, bereft of Kuntī, and deeply afflicted with grief, were like calves left without their mother. (15-24-15)
धृतराष्ट्रस्तु तेनाह्ना गत्वा सुमहदन्तरम्। ततो भागीरथीतीरे निवासमकरोत्प्रभुः ॥१५-२४-१६॥
dhṛtarāṣṭras tu tenāhnā gatvā sumahad antaram। tato bhāgīrathī-tīre nivāsam akarot prabhuḥ ॥15-24-16॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; तु (tu) - but; तेन (tena) - on that; अह्ना (ahnā) - day; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; अन्तरम् (antaram) - distance; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भागीरथीतीरे (bhāgīrathī-tīre) - on the bank of the Bhagirathi (Ganga); निवासम् (nivāsam) - residence; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Dhritarashtra but on that day having gone very great distance then on the bank of the Bhagirathi residence made the lord.)
But Dhritarashtra, on that day, having traveled a very great distance, then made his residence on the bank of the Bhagirathi river. (15-24-16)
प्रादुष्कृता यथान्यायमग्नयो वेदपारगैः। व्यराजन्त द्विजश्रेष्ठैस्तत्र तत्र तपोधनैः ॥ प्रादुष्कृताग्निरभवत्स च वृद्धो नराधिपः ॥१५-२४-१७॥
prāduṣkṛtā yathā-nyāyam agnayo veda-pāragaiḥ। vyarājanta dvija-śreṣṭhaiḥ tatra tatra tapa-dhanaiḥ॥ prāduṣkṛtāgnir abhavat sa ca vṛddho narādhipaḥ॥15-24-17॥
[प्रादुष्कृता (prāduṣkṛtā) - kindled; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्यायम् (anyāyam) - in the (proper) way; अग्नयः (agnayaḥ) - fires; वेदपारगैः (veda-pāragaiḥ) - by those who have mastered the Vedas; विराजन्त (vyarājanta) - were shining; द्विजश्रेष्ठैः (dvija-śreṣṭhaiḥ) - by excellent Brahmins; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - in various places; तपोधनैः (tapa-dhanaiḥ) - by those whose wealth is austerity; प्रादुष्कृत (prāduṣkṛta) - kindled; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
(Kindled as proper the fires by those who have mastered the Vedas; shone by excellent Brahmins here and there by ascetics; kindled fire became, and he, the old king.)
The fires were duly kindled by Vedic scholars; throughout the place, the best Brahmins and ascetics caused them to shine. The king, now aged, also kindled the sacred fire. (15-24-17)
स राजाग्नीन्पर्युपास्य हुत्वा च विधिवत्तदा। सन्ध्यागतं सहस्रांशुमुपातिष्ठत भारत ॥१५-२४-१८॥
sa rājāgnīn paryupāsya hutvā ca vidhivat tadā। sandhyāgataṃ sahasrāṃśum upātiṣṭhata bhārata ॥15-24-18॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; अग्नीन् (agnīn) - fires (accusative plural); पर्युपास्य (paryupāsya) - having duly worshipped (gerund); हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered sacrifice (gerund); च (ca) - and; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the prescribed rule; तदा (tadā) - then; सन्ध्यागतं (sandhyāgatam) - come at twilight; (sandhyā—twilight, agata—come; सहस्रांशुम् (sahasrāṃśum) - the one with a thousand rays (the Sun); उपातिष्ठत (upātiṣṭhata) - approached, attended upon (third person singular imperfect); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(He, the king, having duly worshipped the fires and having performed the sacrifice according to the prescribed rule, then, O Bhārata, approached the one with a thousand rays who had come at twilight.)
He, the king, after duly worshipping the fires and performing the sacrifice as prescribed, then approached the Sun who had appeared at twilight, O Bhārata. (15-24-18)
विदुरः सञ्जयश्चैव राज्ञः शय्यां कुशैस्ततः। चक्रतुः कुरुवीरस्य गान्धार्याश्चाविदूरतः ॥१५-२४-१९॥
viduraḥ sañjayaś caiva rājñaḥ śayyāṁ kuśais tataḥ। cakratuḥ kuru-vīrasya gāndhāryāś ca avidūrataḥ॥15-24-19॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; (proper noun); सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sañjaya; (proper noun); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; शय्यां (śayyām) - bed; कुशैः (kuśaiḥ) - with kuśa grass; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - (they) made; कुरुवीरस्य (kuru-vīrasya) - of the Kuru hero; गान्धार्याः (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; अविदूरतः (avidūrataḥ) - not far (from);]
(Vidura, and indeed Sañjaya, then made the king's bed with kuśa grass, not far from Gāndhārī and the Kuru hero.)
