वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
आज्ञापयामास ततः सेनां भरतसत्तमः। अर्जुनप्रमुखैर्गुप्तां लोकपालोपमैर्नरैः ॥१५-३०-१॥
Then the best of the Bharatas gave the order for the troops, protected by men led by Arjuna who were like the guardians of the worlds. (15-30-1)
योगो योग इति प्रीत्या ततः शब्दो महानभूत। क्रोशतां सादिनां तत्र युज्यतां युज्यतामिति ॥१५-३०-२॥
With joy the call "union, union!" arose, then a great sound came forth; there, among the riders who shouted, "let it be yoked, let it be yoked!" (15-30-2)
केचिद्यानैर्नरा जग्मुः केचिदश्वैर्मनोजवैः। रथैश्च नगराकारैः प्रदीप्तज्वलनोपमैः ॥१५-३०-३॥
Some men went by vehicles, others by horses as swift as the mind, and still others by chariots shaped like cities, resembling blazing fire. (15-30-3)
गजेन्द्रैश्च तथैवान्ये केचिदुष्ट्रैर्नराधिप। पदातिनस्तथैवान्ये नखरप्रासयोधिनः ॥१५-३०-४॥
O king, there were those with elephant-chiefs, likewise some others with camels; also foot-soldiers, and similarly others, warriors armed with spiked iron clubs. (15-30-4)
पौरजानपदाश्चैव यानैर्बहुविधैस्तथा। अन्वयुः कुरुराजानं धृतराष्ट्रदिदृक्षया ॥१५-३०-५॥
The citizens and country folk, using many kinds of vehicles, likewise followed the Kuru king, desiring to see Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (15-30-5)
स चापि राजवचनादाचार्यो गौतमः कृपः। सेनामादाय सेनानी प्रययावाश्रमं प्रति ॥१५-३०-६॥
He, Kṛpa the teacher, descendant of Gautama, as general, by the king's command, took the army and departed for the hermitage. (15-30-6)
ततो द्विजैर्वृतः श्रीमान्कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। संस्तूयमानो बहुभिः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः ॥१५-३०-७॥
Then, the illustrious Kuru king Yudhishthira, surrounded by the twice-born, was praised by many bards, charioteers, and panegyrists. (15-30-7)
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि। रथानीकेन महता निर्ययौ कुरुनन्दनः ॥१५-३०-८॥
The delight of the Kurus (Arjuna), with a white parasol held above his head and accompanied by a great division of chariots, set out. (15-30-8)
गजैश्चाचलसङ्काशैर्भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः। सज्जयन्त्रायुधोपेतैः प्रययौ मारुतात्मजः ॥१५-३०-९॥
Bhīma of terrible deeds (Vṛkodara), along with elephants resembling mountains and equipped with armed devices, set forth—the son of the Wind. (15-30-9)
माद्रीपुत्रावपि तथा हयारोहैः सुसंवृतौ। जग्मतुः प्रीतिजननौ संनद्धकवचध्वजौ ॥१५-३०-१०॥
Likewise, the two sons of Mādrī, well surrounded by horsemen, departed joyfully, wearing armor and bearing banners. (15-30-10)
अर्जुनश्च महातेजा रथेनादित्यवर्चसा। वशी श्वेतैर्हयैर्दिव्यैर्युक्तेनान्वगमन्नृपम् ॥१५-३०-११॥
Arjuna, of great splendor, controlling the chariot brilliant as the sun and yoked with divine white horses, followed the king. (15-30-11)
द्रौपदीप्रमुखाश्चापि स्त्रीसङ्घाः शिबिकागताः। स्त्र्यध्यक्षयुक्ताः प्रययुर्विसृजन्तोऽमितं वसु ॥१५-३०-१२॥
The groups of women, headed by Draupadī, also departed in palanquins along with their female overseers, distributing boundless wealth as they went. (15-30-12)
समृद्धनरनागाश्वं वेणुवीणानिनादितम्। शुशुभे पाण्डवं सैन्यं तत्तदा भरतर्षभ ॥१५-३०-१३॥
O best of the Bharatas, then that army of the Pandavas, abundant in men, elephants, and horses and resounding with the music of flutes and vinas, looked splendid. (15-30-13)
नदीतीरेषु रम्येषु सरत्सु च विशां पते। वासान्कृत्वा क्रमेणाथ जग्मुस्ते कुरुपुङ्गवाः ॥१५-३०-१४॥
O lord of the people, on the pleasant river banks and at the lakes, the foremost of the Kurus made their dwellings in sequence and then proceeded on. (15-30-14)
युयुत्सुश्च महातेजा धौम्यश्चैव पुरोहितः। युधिष्ठिरस्य वचनात्पुरगुप्तिं प्रचक्रतुः ॥१५-३०-१५॥
Yuyutsu and Dhaumya, the greatly radiant priest, indeed, made arrangements for the protection of the city at Yudhiṣṭhira's command. (15-30-15)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा कुरुक्षेत्रमवातरत्। क्रमेणोत्तीर्य यमुनां नदीं परमपावनीम् ॥१५-३०-१६॥
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira arrived at Kurukṣetra, gradually crossing the supremely purifying river Yamunā. (15-30-16)
स ददर्शाश्रमं दूराद्राजर्षेस्तस्य धीमतः। शतयूपस्य कौरव्य धृतराष्ट्रस्य चैव ह ॥१५-३०-१७॥
He saw the hermitage from afar belonging to the wise royal sage Śatayūpa and to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, O descendant of Kuru. (15-30-17)
ततः प्रमुदितः सर्वो जनस्तद्वनमञ्जसा। विवेश सुमहानादैरापूर्य भरतर्षभ ॥१५-३०-१८॥
Then, O best of the Bharatas, all the people joyfully entered that forest directly, filling it with their mighty sounds. (15-30-18)
