15.031
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततस्ते पाण्डवा दूरादवतीर्य पदातयः। अभिजग्मुर्नरपतेराश्रमं विनयानताः ॥१५-३१-१॥
Then the Pāṇḍavas, having dismounted at some distance, proceeded on foot with humility to the king's hermitage. (15-31-1)
स च पौरजनः सर्वो ये च राष्ट्रनिवासिनः। स्त्रियश्च कुरुमुख्यानां पद्भिरेवान्वयुस्तदा ॥१५-३१-२॥
He, along with all the townspeople, the inhabitants of the kingdom, and the women of the chiefs of the Kurus, all followed on foot at that time. (15-31-2)
आश्रमं ते ततो जग्मुर्धृतराष्ट्रस्य पाण्डवाः। शून्यं मृगगणाकीर्णं कदलीवनशोभितम् ॥१५-३१-३॥
Then the Pāṇḍavas went to the hermitage of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, which was empty, filled with groups of deer, and adorned with banana forests. (15-31-3)
ततस्तत्र समाजग्मुस्तापसा विविधव्रताः। पाण्डवानागतान्द्रष्टुं कौतूहलसमन्विताः ॥१५-३१-४॥
Then, ascetics of various vows assembled there, filled with curiosity to see the arriving Pāṇḍavas. (15-31-4)
तानपृच्छत्ततो राजा क्वासौ कौरववंशभृत्। पिता ज्येष्ठो गतोऽस्माकमिति बाष्पपरिप्लुतः ॥१५-३१-५॥
Then the king, filled with tears, asked them: "Where has that supporter of the Kaurava lineage, our eldest father, gone?" (15-31-5)
तमूचुस्ते ततो वाक्यं यमुनामवगाहितुम्। पुष्पाणामुदकुम्भस्य चार्थे गत इति प्रभो ॥१५-३१-६॥
They then said to him, "O master, he has gone to enter the Yamunā for the sake of flowers and the water-pot." (15-31-6)
तैराख्यातेन मार्गेण ततस्ते प्रययुस्तदा। ददृशुश्चाविदूरे तान्सर्वानथ पदातयः ॥१५-३१-७॥
Then they proceeded by the path described by them. And the foot soldiers saw all of them not far off. (15-31-7)
ततस्ते सत्वरा जग्मुः पितुर्दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः। सहदेवस्तु वेगेन प्राधावद्येन सा पृथा ॥१५-३१-८॥
Then they quickly went to their father, desiring to see him; but Sahadeva ran swiftly toward where his mother Pṛthā was. (15-31-8)
सस्वनं प्ररुदन्धीमान्मातुः पादावुपस्पृशन्। सा च बाष्पाविलमुखी प्रददर्श प्रियं सुतम् ॥१५-३१-९॥
Crying aloud and weeping, as he touched his mother's feet, she, her face covered with tears, saw her beloved son. (15-31-9)
बाहुभ्यां सम्परिष्वज्य समुन्नाम्य च पुत्रकम्। गान्धार्याः कथयामास सहदेवमुपस्थितम् ॥१५-३१-१०॥
Embracing with her arms and lifting up the little boy, Gandhari spoke to Sahadeva, who was present. (15-31-10)
अनन्तरं च राजानं भीमसेनमथार्जुनम्। नकुलं च पृथा दृष्ट्वा त्वरमाणोपचक्रमे ॥१५-३१-११॥
Afterwards, having seen the king, Bhīmasena, then Arjuna, and Nakula, Pṛthā hastened and approached. (15-31-11)
सा ह्यग्रेऽगच्छत तयोर्दम्पत्योर्हतपुत्रयोः। कर्षन्ती तौ ततस्ते तां दृष्ट्वा संन्यपतन्भुवि ॥१५-३१-१२॥
She indeed went in front; the couple, whose son was slain, she was dragging those two—then, having seen her, they both fell together onto the ground. (15-31-12)
तान्राजा स्वरयोगेन स्पर्शेन च महामनाः। प्रत्यभिज्ञाय मेधावी समाश्वासयत प्रभुः ॥१५-३१-१३॥
The great-minded king, having recognized them, comforted them with his own voice and touch; the wise master reassured them. (15-31-13)
ततस्ते बाष्पमुत्सृज्य गान्धारीसहितं नृपम्। उपतस्थुर्महात्मानो मातरं च यथाविधि ॥१५-३१-१४॥
Then, after shedding tears, they approached the king together with Gandhari, and the great-souled ones also approached their mother in the proper manner. (15-31-14)
सर्वेषां तोयकलशाञ्जगृहुस्ते स्वयं तदा। पाण्डवा लब्धसञ्ज्ञास्ते मात्रा चाश्वासिताः पुनः ॥१५-३१-१५॥
They themselves then took up all the water pots. The Pāṇḍavas, having regained consciousness, were again comforted by their mother. (15-31-15)
ततो नार्यो नृसिंहानां स च योधजनस्तदा। पौरजानपदाश्चैव ददृशुस्तं नराधिपम् ॥१५-३१-१६॥
Then the wives of the heroes, he and the warriors at that time, and both the citizens and country people, saw that ruler of men. (15-31-16)
निवेदयामास तदा जनं तं नामगोत्रतः। युधिष्ठिरो नरपतिः स चैनान्प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥१५-३१-१७॥
Then he reported that person with their name and lineage, and King Yudhiṣṭhira honored them accordingly. (15-31-17)
स तैः परिवृतो मेने हर्षबाष्पाविलेक्षणः। राजात्मानं गृहगतं पुरेव गजसाह्वये ॥१५-३१-१८॥
Surrounded by them, he, his eyes dimmed with tears of joy, felt as if he were a prince returning home as before in the city of Gajasāhvaya. (15-31-18)
अभिवादितो वधूभिश्च कृष्णाद्याभिः स पार्थिवः। गान्धार्या सहितो धीमान्कुन्त्या च प्रत्यनन्दत ॥१५-३१-१९॥
Having been greeted by the brides headed by Kṛṣṇā, the wise king, together with Gāndhārī and Kuntī, returned their salutations. (15-31-19)
ततश्चाश्रममागच्छत्सिद्धचारणसेवितम्। दिदृक्षुभिः समाकीर्णं नभस्तारागणैरिव ॥१५-३१-२०॥
Then he approached the hermitage, attended by siddhas and chāraṇas, thronged by those desiring to see it, like the sky crowded with groups of stars. (15-31-20)
