धृतराष्ट्र महाबाहो कच्चित्ते वर्धते तपः। कच्चिन्मनस्ते प्रीणाति वनवासे नराधिप ॥१५-३५-२॥

कच्चिद्धृदि न ते शोको राजन्पुत्रविनाशजः। कच्चिज्ज्ञानानि सर्वाणि प्रसन्नानि तवानघ ॥१५-३५-३॥
kacciddhṛdi na te śoko rājanputravināśajaḥ। kaccijjñānāni sarvāṇi prasannāni tavānagha॥15-35-3॥

(Whether in your heart, not your grief, O king, arisen from the destruction of (your) son? Whether all knowledges, clear, your, O sinless one?)
O king, has not grief arisen from your son's destruction settled in your heart? O sinless one, are all your faculties of knowledge clear? (15-35-3)
कच्चिद्बुद्धिं दृढां कृत्वा चरस्यारण्यकं विधिम्। कच्चिद्वधूश्च गान्धारी न शोकेनाभिभूयते ॥१५-३५-४॥
kaccid buddhiṁ dṛḍhāṁ kṛtvā carasya āraṇyakaṁ vidhim। kaccid vadhūś ca gāndhārī na śokenābhibhūyate॥15-35-4॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - is it so; बुद्धिं (buddhiṁ) - resolve; दृढां (dṛḍhāṁ) - firm; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; चरस्य (carasya) - do you practice; आरण्यकं (āraṇyakaṁ) - forest-dweller's; विधिम् (vidhim) - discipline; कच्चित् (kaccit) - is it so; वधूः (vadhūḥ) - the lady (wife); च (ca) - and; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; न (na) - not; शोकेन (śokena) - by grief; अभिभूयते (abhibhūyate) - is overcome;]
(Is it so, having made firm resolve, do you practice the forest-dweller's discipline? Is it so, and the lady Gāndhārī is not overcome by grief?)
Have you firmly resolved and are you following the discipline of a forest-dweller? And is the lady Gāndhārī also not being overcome by grief? (15-35-4)
महाप्रज्ञा बुद्धिमती देवी धर्मार्थदर्शिनी। आगमापायतत्त्वज्ञा कच्चिदेषा न शोचति ॥१५-३५-५॥
mahāprajñā buddhimatī devī dharmārthadarśinī। āgamāpāyatattvajñā kaccideṣā na śocati ॥15-35-5॥

Is this greatly wise, intelligent lady, perceiver of righteousness and meaning, and knower of the true nature of sources and losses, not grieving? (15-35-5)
कच्चित्कुन्ती च राजंस्त्वां शुश्रूषुरनहङ्कृता। या परित्यज्य राज्यं स्वं गुरुशुश्रूषणे रता ॥१५-३५-६॥
kaccit kuntī ca rājan tvāṁ śuśrūṣur anahaṅkṛtā। yā parityajya rājyaṁ svaṁ guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratā ॥15-35-6॥

O king, is Kuntī serving you without pride—the one who, having given up her own kingdom, is devoted to serving her elders? (15-35-6)
कच्चिद्धर्मसुतो राजा त्वया प्रीत्याभिनन्दितः। भीमार्जुनयमाश्चैव कच्चिदेतेऽपि सान्त्विताः ॥१५-३५-७॥
kacciddharmasuto rājā tvayā prītyābhinanditaḥ। bhīmārjunayamaścaiva kaccidete'pi sāntvitāḥ॥15-35-7॥

कच्चिन्नन्दसि दृष्ट्वैतान्कच्चित्ते निर्मलं मनः। कच्चिद्विशुद्धभावोऽसि जातज्ञानो नराधिप ॥१५-३५-८॥
kaccinnandasi dṛṣṭvaitān kaccitte nirmalaṁ manaḥ। kaccidviśuddhabhāvo'si jātajñāno narādhipa ॥15-35-8॥

O king, do you rejoice after seeing these people? Is your mind pure? Are you of pure disposition, and has knowledge arisen in you? (15-35-8)
एतद्धि त्रितयं श्रेष्ठं सर्वभूतेषु भारत। निर्वैरता महाराज सत्यमद्रोह एव च ॥१५-३५-९॥
etaddhi tritayaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ sarvabhūteṣu bhārata। nirvairatā mahārāja satyamadroha eva ca ॥15-35-9॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; त्रितयम् (tritayam) - threefold; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - excellent; best; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - among all beings; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; निर्वैरता (nirvairatā) - freedom from enmity; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सत्य (satya) - truth; मद्रोह (madroha) - absence of deceit; एव (eva) - indeed; only; truly; च (ca) - and;]
(This indeed threefold is best among all beings, O Bhārata. Freedom from enmity, O great king, truth, absence of deceit indeed and.)
O Bhārata, this threefold quality is the best among all beings: freedom from enmity, O great king, truthfulness, and complete absence of deceit. (15-35-9)
कच्चित्ते नानुतापोऽस्ति वनवासेन भारत। स्वदते वन्यमन्नं वा मुनिवासांसि वा विभो ॥१५-३५-१०॥
kaccitte nānutāpo'sti vanavāsena bhārata। svadate vanyamannaṃ vā munivāsāṃsi vā vibho ॥15-35-10॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - surely; ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; अनुतापः (anutāpaḥ) - regret; अस्ति (asti) - is; वनवासेन (vanavāsena) - by (the) forest-dwelling; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; स्वदते (svadate) - enjoys; वन्यं (vanyaṃ) - wild; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; वा (vā) - or; मुनि (muni) - of sages; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; वा (vā) - or; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(Surely to you there is not regret by the forest-dwelling, O Bhārata. Enjoys wild food or sages' garments or, O mighty one.)
Surely, O Bhārata, you do not feel regret for dwelling in the forest. Do you find enjoyment in wild food or in the garments of sages, O mighty one? (15-35-10)
विदितं चापि मे राजन्विदुरस्य महात्मनः। गमनं विधिना येन धर्मस्य सुमहात्मनः ॥१५-३५-११॥
viditaṃ cāpi me rājan vidurasya mahātmanaḥ। gamanaṃ vidhinā yena dharmasya sumahātmanaḥ ॥15-35-11॥
[विदितं (viditam) - known; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मे (me) - to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - the great-souled; गमनं (gamanaṃ) - departure; विधिना (vidhinā) - by fate; येन (yena) - by which; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of Dharma; सुमहात्मनः (sumahātmanaḥ) - the very great-souled;]
(Known also to me, O king, is the departure by fate, by which Vidura the great-souled and Dharma the very great-souled (are connected).)
O king, I am also aware of the departure by fate of Vidura, the great-souled, and of Dharma, the very great-souled. (15-35-11)
माण्डव्यशापाद्धि स वै धर्मो विदुरतां गतः। महाबुद्धिर्महायोगी महात्मा सुमहामनाः ॥१५-३५-१२॥
māṇḍavyaśāpāddhi sa vai dharmo viduratāṃ gataḥ। mahābuddhirmahāyogī mahātmā sumahāmanāḥ ॥15-35-12॥
[माण्डव्यशापात् (māṇḍavyaśāpāt) - from the curse of Māṇḍavya; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; विदुरताम् (viduratām) - state of Vidura; गतः (gataḥ) - went; महाबुद्धिः (mahābuddhiḥ) - great intellect; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - great yogi; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great soul; सुमहामनाः (sumahāmanāḥ) - of very great mind;]
(Indeed, from the curse of Māṇḍavya, he, Dharma, went to the state of Vidura; (being) a great intellect, a great yogi, a great soul, one of very great mind.)
Due to the curse of Māṇḍavya, Dharma indeed took birth as Vidura, (he was) of great intellect, a great yogi, a great soul, and one of exceedingly great mind. (15-35-12)
बृहस्पतिर्वा देवेषु शुक्रो वाप्यसुरेषु यः। न तथा बुद्धिसम्पन्नो यथा स पुरुषर्षभः ॥१५-३५-१३॥
bṛhaspatir vā deveṣu śukro vāpy asureṣu yaḥ। na tathā buddhi-sampanno yathā sa puruṣarṣabhaḥ॥15-35-13॥
[बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; (the preceptor of the gods); वा (vā) - or; देवेषु (deveṣu) - among the gods; शुक्रः (śukraḥ) - Śukra; (the preceptor of the asuras); वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; असुरेषु (asureṣu) - among the asuras; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - thus; बुद्धि-सम्पन्नः (buddhi-sampannaḥ) - possessed of intelligence; यथा (yathā) - as; सः (saḥ) - he; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - bull among men; (foremost of men);]
(Bṛhaspati or among the gods or Śukra even among the asuras who, not thus possessed of intelligence as he, the bull among men.)
Neither Bṛhaspati among the gods nor Śukra among the asuras is as endowed with intelligence as that bull among men. (15-35-13)
तपोबलव्ययं कृत्वा सुमहच्चिरसम्भृतम्। माण्डव्येनर्षिणा धर्मो ह्यभिभूतः सनातनः ॥१५-३५-१४॥
tapobalavyayaṁ kṛtvā sumahaccirasambhṛtam। māṇḍavyenarṣiṇā dharmo hyabhibhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ॥15-35-14॥
[तपोबलव्ययं (tapobalavyayam) - expenditure of austere power; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; सुमहच्चिरसम्भृतम् (sumahac-cira-sambhṛtam) - very great and long-collected; माण्डव्येनर्षिणा (māṇḍavyena ṛṣiṇā) - by the sage Māṇḍavya; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma; हि (hi) - indeed; अभिभूतः (abhibhūtaḥ) - overcome; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(Having made a very great and long-collected expenditure of austere power, by the sage Māṇḍavya, Dharma indeed, the eternal, was overcome.)
By the great sage Māṇḍavya, having expended his formidable ascetic power accumulated over a long time, even the eternal Dharma was overcome. (15-35-14)
नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणः पूर्वं मया स्वेन बलेन च। वैचित्रवीर्यके क्षेत्रे जातः स सुमहामतिः ॥१५-३५-१५॥
niyogād brahmaṇaḥ pūrvaṃ mayā svena balena ca. vaicitravīryake kṣetre jātaḥ sa sumahāmatiḥ ॥15-35-15॥
[नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by injunction; by order; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; of the creator; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; before; मया (mayā) - by me; स्वेन (svena) - by my own; बलेन (balena) - strength; power; च (ca) - and; वैचित्रवीर्यके (vaicitravīryake) - in the (field of) Vaicitravīrya; क्षेत्रे (kṣetre) - in the field; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; स (sa) - he; सुमहामतिः (sumahāmatiḥ) - of very great intellect;]
(By injunction of Brahman formerly by me by my own strength and in the (field of) Vaicitravīrya in the field born he of very great intellect.)
He, of very great intellect, was formerly born in the field of Vaicitravīrya by my own power and by the injunction of Brahman. (15-35-15)
भ्राता तव महाराज देवदेवः सनातनः। धारणाच्छ्रेयसो ध्यानाद्यं धर्मं कवयो विदुः ॥१५-३५-१६॥
bhrātā tava mahārāja devadevaḥ sanātanaḥ। dhāraṇācchreyaso dhyānādyaṃ dharmaṃ kavayo viduḥ॥15-35-16॥
[भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; तव (tava) - your; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; देवदेवः (devadevaḥ) - god of gods; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; धारणात् (dhāraṇāt) - from supporting, upholding; श्रेयसः (śreyasaḥ) - supreme, excellent; ध्यानात् (dhyānāt) - from meditation; अद्यं (adyaṃ) - primordial, original; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; कवयः (kavayaḥ) - wise ones, seers; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(Brother your great king, god of gods, eternal. From supporting, from the supreme, from meditation, the primordial dharma the seers know.)
Your brother, O great king, the god of gods, the eternal one—from upholding, from the excellent, from meditation—the wise know the primordial dharma. (15-35-16)
सत्येन संवर्धयति दमेन नियमेन च। अहिंसया च दानेन तपसा च सनातनः ॥१५-३५-१७॥
satyena saṁvardhayati damena niyamena ca। ahiṁsayā ca dānena tapasā ca sanātanaḥ॥15-35-17॥
[सत्येन (satyena) - by truthfulness; संवर्धयति (saṁvardhayati) - nourishes; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; नियमेन (niyamena) - by regulation; च (ca) - and; अहिंसया (ahiṁsayā) - by non-violence; च (ca) - and; दानेन (dānena) - by giving; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - the eternal (being);]
(By truthfulness he nourishes, by self-restraint, by regulation and by non-violence, and by giving and by austerity, the eternal (being).)
The eternal one is nourished by truthfulness, self-restraint, regulation, non-violence, giving, and austerity. (15-35-17)
येन योगबलाज्जातः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। धर्म इत्येष नृपते प्राज्ञेनामितबुद्धिना ॥१५-३५-१८॥
yena yogabalāj jātaḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dharma ity eṣa nṛpate prājñenāmitabuddhinā ॥15-35-18॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; योगबलात् (yogabalāt) - from the power of yoga; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - the king of the Kurus; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; इति (iti) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; प्राज्ञेन (prājñena) - by the wise one; अमितबुद्धिना (amitabuddhinā) - of immeasurable intellect;]
(By whom, from the power of yoga, was born the king of the Kurus, Yudhishthira; 'Dharma' thus, this, O king, by the wise one of immeasurable intellect.)
O King, Yudhishthira, the king of the Kurus, who was born by the power of yoga through him, is called 'Dharma' by the wise one of immeasurable intellect. (15-35-18)
यथा ह्यग्निर्यथा वायुर्यथापः पृथिवी यथा। यथाकाशं तथा धर्म इह चामुत्र च स्थितः ॥१५-३५-१९॥
yathā hy agnir yathā vāyuḥ yathā āpaḥ pṛthivī yathā। yathā ākāśam tathā dharma iha ca amutra ca sthitaḥ ॥15-35-19॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; यथा (yathā) - just as; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - air; यथा (yathā) - just as; अपः (āpaḥ) - waters; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; यथा (yathā) - just as; यथा (yathā) - just as; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - ether; तथा (tathā) - so; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the other world); च (ca) - and; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established;]
(Just as indeed fire, just as air, just as waters, just as earth, just as ether, so dharma here and there and is established.)
Just as fire, air, water, earth, and ether are present everywhere, so too is dharma established both here and in the other world. (15-35-19)
सर्वगश्चैव कौरव्य सर्वं व्याप्य चराचरम्। दृश्यते देवदेवः स सिद्धैर्निर्दग्धकिल्बिषैः ॥१५-३५-२०॥
sarvagaś caiva kauravya sarvaṃ vyāpya carācaram। dṛśyate devadevaḥ sa siddhair nirdagdhakilbiṣaiḥ॥15-35-20॥
[सर्वगः (sarvagaḥ) - all-pervading; see: sarva (all) + ga (going); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O son of Kuru; (Kaurava descendant); सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; व्याप्य (vyāpya) - having pervaded; चराचरम् (carācaram) - the moving and unmoving; (animated and inanimate); दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; देवदेवः (devadevaḥ) - the god of gods; सः (saḥ) - he; सिद्धैः (siddhaiḥ) - by the perfected ones; निर्दग्धकिल्बिषैः (nirdagdhakilbiṣaiḥ) - whose sins (kilbiṣa) have been completely burned (nirdagdha);]
(All-pervading and indeed, O Kauravya, all having pervaded the moving and unmoving, is seen the god of gods, he, by the perfected ones whose sins have been completely burned.)
O Kauravya, the all-pervading god of gods, having pervaded all that moves and does not move, is seen by those perfected ones whose sins have been entirely burned away. (15-35-20)
यो हि धर्मः स विदुरो विदुरो यः स पाण्डवः। स एष राजन्वश्यस्ते पाण्डवः प्रेष्यवत्स्थितः ॥१५-३५-२१॥
yo hi dharmaḥ sa viduro viduro yaḥ sa pāṇḍavaḥ. sa eṣa rājann vaśyaste pāṇḍavaḥ preṣyavat-sthitaḥ ॥15-35-21॥
[यो (yo) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; स (sa) - he; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O King; वश्यः (vaśyaḥ) - submissive; ते (te) - to you; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; प्रेष्यवत् (preṣyavat) - like a servant; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated;]
(Who indeed is dharma, he is Vidura; Vidura who is, he is the Pāṇḍava. He, this, O King, submissive to you, Pāṇḍava is situated like a servant.)
He who is dharma is Vidura; and he who is Vidura is the Pāṇḍava. This very one, O King, your submissive Pāṇḍava, stands here like a servant. (15-35-21)
प्रविष्टः स स्वमात्मानं भ्राता ते बुद्धिसत्तमः। दिष्ट्या महात्मा कौन्तेयं महायोगबलान्वितः ॥१५-३५-२२॥
praviṣṭaḥ sa svam ātmānaṃ bhrātā te buddhisattamaḥ। diṣṭyā mahātmā kaunteyaṃ mahāyogabalānvitaḥ॥15-35-22॥
[प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered; स (sa) - he; स्वम् (svam) - own; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिसत्तमः (buddhisattamaḥ) - most excellent in understanding; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - fortunately; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - son of Kunti; महायोगबलान्वितः (mahāyogabalānvitaḥ) - endowed with the great power of yoga;]
(Having entered, he, your brother, most excellent in understanding, his own self. Fortunately, the great-souled son of Kunti, endowed with the great power of yoga.)

त्वां चापि श्रेयसा योक्ष्ये नचिराद्भरतर्षभ। संशयच्छेदनार्थं हि प्राप्तं मां विद्धि पुत्रक ॥१५-३५-२३॥
tvāṃ cāpi śreyasā yokṣye nacirādbhatarṣabha। saṃśayacchedanārthaṃ hi prāptaṃ māṃ viddhi putraka ॥15-35-23॥
[त्वां (tvām) - you (accusative); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; श्रेयसा (śreyasā) - by auspiciousness; योक्ष्ये (yokṣye) - I shall unite; नचिरात् (nacirāt) - soon; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; संशयच्छेदनार्थम् (saṃśayacchedanārtham) - for the purpose of cutting (removing) doubt; हि (hi) - indeed; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - arrived; माम् (mām) - me; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son;]
(You also and by auspiciousness I shall unite soon, O best of the Bharatas. For the purpose of removing doubt, indeed, arrived me, know O son.)
O best of the Bharatas, I shall soon unite you also with auspiciousness. Know that I have arrived, O son, indeed for the purpose of removing doubt. (15-35-23)
न कृतं यत्पुरा कैश्चित्कर्म लोके महर्षिभिः। आश्चर्यभूतं तपसः फलं संदर्शयामि वः ॥१५-३५-२४॥
na kṛtaṃ yat purā kaiścit karma loke mahaṛṣibhiḥ. āścaryabhūtaṃ tapasaḥ phalaṃ sandarśayāmi vaḥ ॥15-35-24॥
[न (na) - not; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; यत् (yat) - which; पुरा (purā) - formerly; कैश्चित् (kaiścit) - by some; कर्म (karma) - act; लोके (loke) - in the world; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - by great sages; आश्चर्यभूतं (āścaryabhūtaṃ) - wonderful; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; संदर्शयामि (sandarśayāmi) - I will show; वः (vaḥ) - to you;]
(Not done, which formerly by some act in the world by great sages, wonderful austerity's fruit I will show to you.)
I will show you the wonderful fruit of austerity, an act not performed before in this world by any of the great sages. (15-35-24)
किमिच्छसि महीपाल मत्तः प्राप्तुममानुषम्। द्रष्टुं स्प्रष्टुमथ श्रोतुं वद कर्तास्मि तत्तथा ॥१५-३५-२५॥
kim icchasi mahīpāla mattaḥ prāptum amānuṣam। draṣṭum spraṣṭum atha śrotum vada kartāsmi tat tathā ॥15-35-25॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इच्छसि (icchasi) - do you desire; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O king; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; प्राप्तुम् (prāptum) - to obtain; अमानुषम् (amānuṣam) - non-human; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; स्प्रष्टुम् (spraṣṭum) - to touch; अथ (atha) - or; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; वद (vada) - say; कर्तास्मि (kartāsmi) - I will do; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(What do you desire, O king, from me to obtain non-human (things), to see, to touch, or to hear? Say (it); I will do that thus.)
O king, what do you wish to obtain from me that is not human—to see, to touch, or to hear? Tell me; I will do that for you accordingly. (15-35-25)
