evaṃ sā rajanī teṣām āśrame puṇyakarmaṇām। śivā nakṣatrasampannā sā vyatīyāya bhārata ॥15-34-1॥

तत्र तत्र कथाश्चासंस्तेषां धर्मार्थलक्षणाः। विचित्रपदसञ्चारा नानाश्रुतिभिरन्विताः ॥१५-३४-२॥
tatra tatra kathāś cāsaṁs teṣāṁ dharmārtha-lakṣaṇāḥ। vicitra-pada-sañcārā nānā-śrutibhir anvitāḥ ॥15-34-2॥
[तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; च (ca) - and; आसंस्त (āsaṁs) - were; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; धर्मार्थलक्षणाः (dharmārtha-lakṣaṇāḥ) - possessing characteristics of dharma and artha; विचित्रपदसञ्चाराः (vicitra-pada-sañcārāḥ) - having diverse arrangement of words; नानाश्रुतिभिः (nānā-śrutibhiḥ) - with various recitations; अन्विताः (anvitāḥ) - connected;]
(Here and there stories indeed were of them, possessing characteristics of dharma and artha, having diverse arrangement of words, connected with various recitations.)
In various places, their stories, marked by the qualities of dharma and artha, were composed with varied word arrangements and were accompanied by diverse recitations. (15-34-2)
पाण्डवास्त्वभितो मातुर्धरण्यां सुषुपुस्तदा। उत्सृज्य सुमहार्हाणि शयनानि नराधिप ॥१५-३४-३॥
pāṇḍavās tv abhito mātur dharaṇyāṃ suṣupus tadā। utsṛjya sumahārhāṇi śayanāni narādhipa ॥15-34-3॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तु (tu) - but; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - all around; मातुः (mātuḥ) - (their) mother; धरण्यां (dharaṇyām) - on the ground; सुषुपुः (suṣupuḥ) - slept; तदा (tadā) - then; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having given up; सुमहार्हाणि (sumahārhāṇi) - very costly; शयनानि (śayanāni) - beds; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(The Pāṇḍavas but all around (their) mother on the ground slept then, having given up very costly beds, O king.)
But the Pāṇḍavas, O king, slept on the ground around their mother, having given up their very costly beds. (15-34-3)
यदाहारोऽभवद्राजा धृतराष्ट्रो महामनाः। तदाहारा नृवीरास्ते न्यवसंस्तां निशां तदा ॥१५-३४-४॥
yad-āhāro'bhavad rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro mahā-manāḥ। tad-āhārā nṛ-vīrās te nyavasan tām niśām tadā ॥15-34-4॥
[यत्-आहारः (yat-āhāraḥ) - whose food; the food that; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; became; राजा (rājā) - king; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; महामनाः (mahā-manāḥ) - great-minded; तत्-आहाराः (tat-āhārāḥ) - with that food; having that food; नृवीराः (nṛ-vīrāḥ) - the men-heroes; heroic men; ते (te) - they; न्यवसन् (nyavasan) - dwelt; spent the night; ताम् (tām) - that; निशाम् (niśām) - night; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Whose food was (eaten by) king Dhritarashtra, great-minded, with that food those heroic men they dwelt that night then.)
When the food was taken by king Dhritarashtra, the great-minded one, then those heroic men spent that night with the same food. (15-34-4)
व्यतीतायां तु शर्वर्यां कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियः। भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेयो ददर्शाश्रममण्डलम् ॥१५-३४-५॥
vyatītāyāṃ tu śarvaryāṃ kṛtapūrvāhṇikakriyaḥ| bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteyo dadarśāśramamaṇḍalam ॥15-34-5॥

सान्तःपुरपरीवारः सभृत्यः सपुरोहितः। यथासुखं यथोद्देशं धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञया ॥१५-३४-६॥
sāntaḥpura-parivāraḥ sabhṛtyaḥ sapurohitaḥ। yathā-sukham yathā-uddeśam dhṛtaraṣṭra-abhyanujñayā ॥15-34-6॥

मृगयूथैरनुद्विग्नैस्तत्र तत्र समाश्रितैः। अशङ्कितैः पक्षिगणैः प्रगीतैरिव च प्रभो ॥१५-३४-९॥
mṛgayūthair anudvignais tatra tatra samāśritaiḥ । aśaṅkitaiḥ pakṣigaṇaiḥ pragītair iva ca prabho ॥15-34-9॥

(By the un-agitated herds of deer who had taken shelter here and there, and by the un-fearful flocks of birds, O lord, as if with songs.)
O lord, the place, with un-agitated herds of deer taking shelter here and there and un-fearful flocks of birds, seemed as if filled with their songs. (15-34-9)
केकाभिर्नीलकण्ठानां दात्यूहानां च कूजितैः। कोकिलानां च कुहरैः शुभैः श्रुतिमनोहरैः ॥१५-३४-१०॥
kekābhir nīlakaṇṭhānāṃ dātyūhānāṃ ca kūjitaiḥ। kokilānāṃ ca kuharaiḥ śubhaiḥ śrutimanoharaiḥ ॥15-34-10॥
[केकाभिः (kekābhiḥ) - with the cries; नीलकण्ठानाम् (nīlakaṇṭhānām) - of the blue-throated (birds) (roller birds); दात्यूहानाम् (dātyūhānām) - of cranes; च (ca) - and; कूजितैः (kūjitaiḥ) - by the cooings/vocalizations; कोकिलानाम् (kokilānām) - of cuckoos; च (ca) - and; कुहरैः (kuharaiḥ) - by warblings/calls; शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - auspicious; श्रुतिमनोहरैः (śrutimanoharaiḥ) - charming to the ear;]
(With the cries of blue-throated (birds), the cooings of cranes, and the auspicious, charming-to-the-ear warblings of cuckoos.)
The cries of blue-throated birds, the cooings of cranes, and the auspicious, melodious songs of cuckoos delighted the ear. (15-34-10)
प्राधीतद्विजघोषैश्च क्वचित्क्वचिदलङ्कृतम्। फलमूलसमुद्वाहैर्महद्भिश्चोपशोभितम् ॥१५-३४-११॥
prādhīta-dvija-ghoṣaiḥ ca kvacit kvacit alaṅkṛtam। phala-mūla-samudvāhaiḥ mahatbhiḥ ca upaśobhitam॥15-34-11॥
[प्राधीत (prādhīta) - recited; chanted; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born; (i.e., birds, Brahmins); घोषैः (ghoṣaiḥ) - with sounds; with cries; च (ca) - and; क्वचित् (kvacit) - here; somewhere; क्वचित् (kvacit) - there; elsewhere; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; decorated; फल (phala) - fruit; मूल (mūla) - root; समुद्वाहैः (samudvāhaiḥ) - being laden with; loaded with; महद्भिः (mahadbhiḥ) - with great (ones); with large (ones); च (ca) - and; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned; embellished;]
(Adorned here and there with recited sounds of twice-born (birds), and embellished with large fruit and root burdens.)
It was decorated here and there by the melodious cries of birds and adorned with heavy loads of fruit and roots. (15-34-11)
ततः स राजा प्रददौ तापसार्थमुपाहृतान्। कलशान्काञ्चनान्राजंस्तथैवौदुम्बरानपि ॥१५-३४-१२॥
tataḥ sa rājā pradadau tāpasārtham upāhṛtān। kalaśān kāñcanān rājan tathaiva udumbarān api ॥15-34-12॥

(Then he, the king, gave to the ascetics the water pots brought, golden (ones), O king, likewise also udumbara-wood (vessels).)
Then the king gave to the ascetics the golden water pots and, in the same way, udumbara-wood vessels as well, O king. (15-34-12)
अजिनानि प्रवेणीश्च स्रुक्स्रुवं च महीपतिः। कमण्डलूंस्तथा स्थालीः पिठराणि च भारत ॥१५-३४-१३॥

O Bhārata, the king (gave) deer skins, braided hair-ornaments, wooden ladle and spoon, water pots, cooking pots, and jars. (15-34-13)
भाजनानि च लौहानि पात्रीश्च विविधा नृप। यद्यदिच्छति यावच्च यदन्यदपि काङ्क्षितम् ॥१५-३४-१४॥
bhājanāni ca lauḥāni pātrīś ca vividhā nṛpa। yadyad icchati yāvat ca yad anyad api kāṅkṣitam ॥15-34-14॥

(Vessels and iron (items), and bowls of various kinds, O king; whatever (he) wishes, as much as, and whatever else also is desired.)
O king, (there are) vessels and iron objects, as well as bowls of various kinds; whatever you desire, as much as you wish, and anything else that is desired. (15-34-14)
एवं स राजा धर्मात्मा परीत्याश्रममण्डलम्। वसु विश्राण्य तत्सर्वं पुनरायान्महीपतिः ॥१५-३४-१५॥
evaṁ sa rājā dharmātmā parītyāśramamaṇḍalam। vasu viśrāṇya tatsarvaṁ punarāyānmahīpatiḥ॥15-34-15॥

(Thus he, the king, righteous-souled, having gone around the hermitage-region, having given all that wealth, again returned, the lord of the earth.)
Thus, the righteous-souled king circled the region of hermitages, gave away all the wealth, and then the lord of the earth returned again. (15-34-15)
कृताह्निकं च राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम्। ददर्शासीनमव्यग्रं गान्धारीसहितं तदा ॥१५-३४-१६॥
kṛtāhnikam ca rājānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ manīṣiṇam। dadarśāsīnamavyagraṁ gāndhārīsahitaṁ tadā ॥15-34-16॥
[कृताह्निकं (kṛtāhnikam) - having performed daily rites; च (ca) - and; राजानं (rājānam) - king; धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; मनीषिणम् (manīṣiṇam) - wise; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; अव्यग्रं (avyagram) - undisturbed; गान्धारीसहितं (gāndhārīsahitam) - together with Gandhari; तदा (tadā) - then;]

Then he saw the wise king Dhritarashtra, who had performed his daily rites, sitting undisturbed together with Gandhari. (15-34-16)
मातरं चाविदूरस्थां शिष्यवत्प्रणतां स्थिताम्। कुन्तीं ददर्श धर्मात्मा सततं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥१५-३४-१७॥
mātaraṁ cāvidūrasthāṁ śiṣyavatpraṇatāṁ sthitām. kuntīṁ dadarśa dharmātmā satataṁ dharmacāriṇīm ॥15-34-17॥

(Mother and not-far-standing bowed like a disciple standing Kuntī he saw, the righteous one, always following dharma.)
The righteous one saw his mother Kuntī, standing not far away, bowed like a disciple, always practicing dharma. (15-34-17)
स तमभ्यर्च्य राजानं नाम संश्राव्य चात्मनः। निषीदेत्यभ्यनुज्ञातो बृस्यामुपविवेश ह ॥१५-३४-१८॥
sa tam abhyarcya rājānam nāma saṃśrāvya ca ātmanaḥ। niṣīda iti abhyanujñātaḥ bṛsyām upaviveśa ha ॥15-34-18॥
[स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - him; अभ्यर्च्य (abhyarcya) - having honored; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; नाम (nāma) - name; संश्राव्य (saṃśrāvya) - having announced; च (ca) - and; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; निषीद (niṣīda) - sit; इति (iti) - thus; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; बृस्याम् (bṛsyām) - on the seat; उपविवेश (upaviveśa) - he sat near; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He having honored him, the king, and having announced his name, and (his) own, when (he was) permitted with (the words) 'sit', on the seat, sat near indeed.)
Having honored the king and announced his own name, when permitted with the words 'sit', he indeed sat down on the seat. (15-34-18)
भीमसेनादयश्चैव पाण्डवाः कौरवर्षभम्। अभिवाद्योपसङ्गृह्य निषेदुः पार्थिवाज्ञया ॥१५-३४-१९॥
bhīmasenādayaścaiva pāṇḍavāḥ kauravarṣabham। abhivādyopasaṅgṛhya niṣeduḥ pārthivājñayā ॥15-34-19॥

(Bhīmasena and others, indeed, the Pāṇḍavas, the bull among the Kauravas, after saluting and having embraced, sat down by the command of the king.)
Bhīmasena and the other Pāṇḍavas respectfully saluted and embraced the eminent Kaurava, then sat down at the king's command. (15-34-19)
स तैः परिवृतो राजा शुशुभेऽतीव कौरवः। बिभ्रद्ब्राह्मीं श्रियं दीप्तां देवैरिव बृहस्पतिः ॥१५-३४-२०॥

tathā teṣūpaviṣṭeṣu samājagmur maharṣayaḥ। śatayūpaprabhṛtayaḥ kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ ॥15-34-21॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तेषु (teṣu) - in those (among them); उपविष्टेषु (upaviṣṭeṣu) - having sat down; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - approached; came together; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; शतयूपप्रभृतयः (śatayūpaprabhṛtayaḥ) - Śatayūpa and others; कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः (kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of Kurukṣetra;]
(Thus, while they were seated, the great sages—Śatayūpa and others, inhabitants of Kurukṣetra—approached.)
Thus, when they had taken their seats, the great sages, including Śatayūpa and others who resided in Kurukṣetra, arrived. (15-34-21)
व्यासश्च भगवान्विप्रो देवर्षिगणपूजितः। वृतः शिष्यैर्महातेजा दर्शयामास तं नृपम् ॥१५-३४-२२॥
vyāsaś ca bhagavān vipro devarṣigaṇapūjitaḥ। vṛtaḥ śiṣyaiḥ mahātejā darśayām āsa taṃ nṛpam ॥15-34-22॥

(Vyāsa and the revered sage, honored by the groups of divine sages, surrounded by disciples, of great splendor, showed him, the king.)

ततः स राजा कौरव्यः कुन्तीपुत्रश्च वीर्यवान्। भीमसेनादयश्चैव समुत्थायाभ्यपूजयन् ॥१५-३४-२३॥
tataḥ sa rājā kauravyaḥ kuntīputraś ca vīryavān | bhīmasenādayaś caiva samutthāyābhyapūjayan ॥15-34-23॥

(Then he, the king Kauravya, and also the powerful son of Kuntī, and indeed Bhīmasena and others, having risen, duly honored.)
Then that king of the Kauravas, along with the mighty son of Kuntī and Bhīmasena and the others, respectfully rose and honored (him). (15-34-23)
समागतस्ततो व्यासः शतयूपादिभिर्वृतः। धृतराष्ट्रं महीपालमास्यतामित्यभाषत ॥१५-३४-२४॥
samāgatastato vyāsaḥ śatayūpādibhirvṛtaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ mahīpālamāsyatāmityabhāṣata ॥15-34-24॥
[समागतः (samāgataḥ) - having come together; came; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa (proper name); शतयूपादिभिः (śatayūpādibhiḥ) - with Śatayūpa and others; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; attended; धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra (proper name, object); महीपालम् (mahīpālam) - king; ruler of the earth; आस्यताम् (āsyatām) - let (him) be seated; इति (iti) - thus; so; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - he spoke; said;]
(Having come there then, Vyāsa, surrounded by Śatayūpa and others, spoke thus: "Let king Dhṛtarāṣṭra be seated.")

नवं तु विष्टरं कौश्यं कृष्णाजिनकुशोत्तरम्। प्रतिपेदे तदा व्यासस्तदर्थमुपकल्पितम् ॥१५-३४-२५॥
navaṁ tu viṣṭaraṁ kauśyaṁ kṛṣṇājinakuśottaram। pratipede tadā vyāsas tadartham upakalpitam ॥15-34-25॥
[नवं (navaṁ) - new; तु (tu) - but; विष्टरं (viṣṭaraṁ) - seat; कौश्यं (kauśyaṁ) - silken; कृष्णाजिनकुशोत्तरम् (kṛṣṇājinakuśottaram) - having black-deer skin and kuśa grass placed above; प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - obtained; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; तदर्थम् (tadartham) - for that purpose; उपकल्पितम् (upakalpitam) - prepared;]
(But Vyāsa then obtained a new silken seat with black-deer skin and kuśa grass placed above, prepared for that purpose.)

(They and all the best of twice-born, on the seats all around, having been permitted by Dvaipayana, sat down endowed with great strength.)
