वनवासं गते विप्र धृतराष्ट्रे महीपतौ। सभार्ये नृपशार्दूले वध्वा कुन्त्या समन्विते ॥१५-३६-१॥
vanavāsaṁ gate vipra dhṛtarāṣṭre mahīpatau। sabhārye nṛpaśārdūle vadhvā kuntyā samanvite ॥15-36-1॥
[वनवासं (vanavāsaṁ) - forest-residence; (exile); गते (gate) - having gone; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; धृतराष्ट्रे (dhṛtarāṣṭre) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महीपतौ (mahīpatau) - king; सभार्ये (sabhārye) - with wife; नृपशार्दूले (nṛpaśārdūle) - O tiger among kings; वध्वा (vadhvā) - with wife (bride); कुन्त्या (kuntiyā) - with Kuntī; समन्विते (samanvite) - accompanied;]
(Having gone to forest-residence, O brāhmaṇa, Dhṛtarāṣṭra the king, with (his) wife, O tiger among kings, accompanied by (his) wife Kuntī.)
O brāhmaṇa, when Dhṛtarāṣṭra the king went into exile in the forest with his wife, and was accompanied by queen Kuntī—O tiger among kings—(this happened). (15-36-1)
विदुरे चापि संसिद्धे धर्मराजं व्यपाश्रिते। वसत्सु पाण्डुपुत्रेषु सर्वेष्वाश्रममण्डले ॥१५-३६-२॥
vidure cāpi saṁsiddhe dharmarājaṁ vyapāśrite। vasatsu pāṇḍu-putreṣu sarveṣv āśrama-maṇḍale ॥15-36-2॥
[विदुरे (vidure) - in (the situation of) Vidura; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; संसिद्धे (saṁsiddhe) - having attained perfection; धर्मराजं (dharmarājaṁ) - Dharma-rāja (Yudhishthira); व्यपाश्रिते (vyapāśrite) - having been entrusted to; वसत्सु (vasatsu) - while dwelling; पाण्डुपुत्रेषु (pāṇḍu-putreṣu) - in the sons of Pandu; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; आश्रममण्डले (āśrama-maṇḍale) - in the group of hermitages;]
(In Vidura also, having attained perfection, Dharma-rāja having been entrusted, while dwelling, in the sons of Pandu, in all, in the group of hermitages.)
After Vidura attained perfection, and Dharma-rāja (Yudhishthira) had been entrusted there, while all the sons of Pandu dwelt in the group of hermitages. (15-36-2)
यत्तदाश्चर्यमिति वै करिष्यामीत्युवाच ह। व्यासः परमतेजस्वी महर्षिस्तद्वदस्व मे ॥१५-३६-३॥
yattadāścaryamiti vai kariṣyāmītyuvāca ha। vyāsaḥ paramatejasvī maharṣistadvadasva me ॥15-36-3॥

(Which that wonder thus indeed I shall do thus he said verily. Vyāsa, most resplendent great sage, that please speak to me.)
He said, "That which is the wonder, indeed I shall do thus." Vyāsa, the most resplendent great sage, please tell that to me. (15-36-3)
वनवासे च कौरव्यः कियन्तं कालमच्युतः। युधिष्ठिरो नरपतिर्न्यवसत्सजनो द्विज ॥१५-३६-४॥
vanavāse ca kauravyaḥ kiyantaṃ kālam acyutaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiro narapatir nyavasat sajano dvija ॥15-36-4॥

O twice-born, O steadfast one, how long did Yudhishthira, the king, descendant of Kuru, dwell with his people in the forest? (15-36-4)
किमाहाराश्च ते तत्र ससैन्या न्यवसन्प्रभो। सान्तःपुरा महात्मान इति तद्ब्रूहि मेऽनघ ॥१५-३६-५॥
kimāhārāś ca te tatra sasainyā nyavasan prabho। sāntaḥpurā mahātmāna iti tad brūhi me'nagha॥15-36-5॥

(What foods and they there, with armies dwelt, O master? With inner women, great souls, thus that tell to me, O sinless one.)
What foods did they consume, and how did those great souls reside there with their armies and consorts? Tell me that, O sinless one. (15-36-5)

te'anujñātās tadā rājan kururājena pāṇḍavāḥ। vividhāny annapānāni viśrāmya anubhavanti te ॥15-36-6॥

(They, having been permitted then, O king, by the Kuru King, the Pāṇḍavas, various foods and drinks, having rested, experience they.)
O king, having been permitted by the King of the Kurus, the Pāṇḍavas, after resting, enjoy various kinds of food and drink. (15-36-6)
मासमेकं विजह्रुस्ते ससैन्यान्तःपुरा वने। अथ तत्रागमद्व्यासो यथोक्तं ते मयानघ ॥१५-३६-७॥
māsam ekaṁ vijahrus te sa-sainyāntaḥ-purā vane। atha tatra āgamat vyāsaḥ yathā-uktam te mayā anagha ॥15-36-7॥
[मासम् (māsam) - month; (accusative singular) एकम् (ekaṁ) - one; (accusative singular) विजह्रुः (vijahrus) - they passed (spent); ते (te) - they; ससैन्य (sa-sainya) - with their army; अन्तःपुराः (antaḥ-purāḥ) - inner attendants (ladies of the palace); वने (vane) - in the forest; अथ (atha) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; आगमत् (āgamat) - arrived; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; यथोक्तम् (yathā-uktam) - as told; ते (te) - to you; मया (mayā) - by me; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(They passed one month with army and ladies of the palace in the forest. Then there Vyāsa arrived, as told to you by me, O sinless one.)
They spent one month in the forest together with their army and the inner attendants. Then, O sinless one, Vyāsa arrived there just as I have told you. (15-36-7)
तथा तु तेषां सर्वेषां कथाभिर्नृपसंनिधौ। व्यासमन्वासतां राजन्नाजग्मुर्मुनयोऽपरे ॥१५-३६-८॥
tathā tu teṣāṃ sarveṣāṃ kathābhir nṛpa-sannidhau। vyāsam anvāsatāṃ rājan ājagmur munayo 'pare ॥15-36-8॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; कथाभिः (kathābhiḥ) - by stories; नृपसंनिधौ (nṛpa-sannidhau) - in the presence of the king; व्यासम् (vyāsam) - Vyāsa; अन्वासताम् (anvāsatām) - those who remained with (after); राजन् (rājan) - O king; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - arrived; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; अपरे (apare) - others;]
(Thus but of them of all by stories in the presence of the king, Vyāsa those who remained with, O king, arrived the sages others.)
Thus, O king, while all of them remained with Vyāsa, in the presence of the king with various stories, other sages arrived. (15-36-8)
नारदः पर्वतश्चैव देवलश्च महातपाः। विश्वावसुस्तुम्बुरुश्च चित्रसेनश्च भारत ॥१५-३६-९॥
nāradaḥ parvataś caiva devalaś ca mahātapāḥ। viśvāvasus tumbaruś ca citrasenaś ca bhārata ॥15-36-9॥

तेषामपि यथान्यायं पूजां चक्रे महामनाः। धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१५-३६-१०॥
teṣām api yathā-nyāyaṃ pūjāṃ cakre mahā-manāḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭrābhy-anujñātaḥ kuru-rājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥15-36-10॥
[तेषाम् अपि (teṣām api) - of them also; यथा न्यायम् (yathā nyāyam) - according to propriety; पूजाम् (pūjām) - honor; चक्रे (cakre) - he performed; महामनाः (mahā-manāḥ) - great-minded; धृतराष्ट्र अभ्यनुज्ञातः (dhṛtarāṣṭra abhy-anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted by Dhritarashtra; कुरुराजः (kuru-rājaḥ) - Kuru king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Of them also, according to propriety, honor he performed, the great-minded; having been permitted by Dhritarashtra, the Kuru king Yudhishthira.)

निषेदुस्ते ततः सर्वे पूजां प्राप्य युधिष्ठिरात्। आसनेष्वथ पुण्येषु बर्हिष्केषु वरेषु च ॥१५-३६-११॥
niṣedus te tataḥ sarve pūjāṃ prāpya yudhiṣṭhirāt। āsaneṣv atha puṇyeṣu barhiṣkeṣu vareṣu ca॥15-36-11॥
[निषेदुः (niṣeduḥ) - they sat down; ते (te) - they; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पूजां (pūjām) - honor; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; युधिष्ठिरात् (yudhiṣṭhirāt) - from Yudhishthira; आसनेषु (āsaneṣu) - on seats; अथ (atha) - then; पुण्येषु (puṇyeṣu) - auspicious; बर्हिष्केषु (barhiṣkeṣu) - on grass-seats; वरेषु (vareṣu) - excellent; च (ca) - and;]
(They sat down, all having received honor from Yudhishthira, thereafter, on seats, then on auspicious, on grass-seats, on excellent ones and.)
Thereafter, all of them, having received honor from Yudhishthira, sat down on auspicious, excellent seats made of sacred grass. (15-36-11)
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु स तु राजा महामतिः। पाण्डुपुत्रैः परिवृतो निषसाद कुरूद्वहः ॥१५-३६-१२॥
teṣu tatropaviṣṭeṣu sa tu rājā mahāmatiḥ। pāṇḍuputraiḥ parivṛto niṣasāda kurūdvahaḥ॥15-36-12॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - among them; तत्र (tatra) - there; उपविष्टेषु (upaviṣṭeṣu) - seated; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - the king; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - great-minded; पाण्डुपुत्रैः (pāṇḍuputraiḥ) - by the sons of Paṇḍu; परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; निषसाद (niṣasāda) - sat down; कुरूद्वहः (kurūdvahaḥ) - the glory of the Kurus;]
(Among them there (as they were) seated, he but the king, great-minded, by the sons of Paṇḍu surrounded, sat down, the glory of the Kurus.)
There, among those who were seated, the great-minded king, surrounded by the sons of Paṇḍu, the glory of the Kurus, sat down. (15-36-12)
गान्धारी चैव कुन्ती च द्रौपदी सात्वती तथा। स्त्रियश्चान्यास्तथान्याभिः सहोपविविशुस्ततः ॥१५-३६-१३॥
gāndhārī caiva kuntī ca draupadī sātvatī tathā। striyaś cānyās tathānyābhiḥ sahopaviviśus tataḥ॥15-36-13॥

तेषां तत्र कथा दिव्या धर्मिष्ठाश्चाभवन्नृप। ऋषीणां च पुराणानां देवासुरविमिश्रिताः ॥१५-३६-१४॥

O king, there were among them divine and highly righteous narratives, and stories of sages and the ancient ones, mingled with gods and asuras. (15-36-14)
ततः कथान्ते व्यासस्तं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम्। प्रोवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठः पुनरेव स तद्वचः ॥ प्रीयमाणो महातेजाः सर्ववेदविदां वरः ॥१५-३६-१५॥
tataḥ kathānte vyāsaḥ taṃ prajñā-cakṣuṣam īśvaram। provāca vadatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ punar eva sa tad vacaḥ॥ prīyamāṇaḥ mahā-tejāḥ sarva-veda-vidāṃ varaḥ॥15-36-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कथान्ते (kathānte) - at the end of the discourse; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; तं (taṃ) - him; प्रज्ञाचक्षुषम् (prajñā-cakṣuṣam) - one whose eye is wisdom; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - the lord; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the foremost; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; स (sa) - he; तद्वचः (tad vacaḥ) - that speech; प्रीयमाणः (prīyamāṇaḥ) - being pleased; महातेजाः (mahā-tejāḥ) - of great brilliance; सर्ववेदविदां (sarva-veda-vidāṃ) - of all knowers of the Veda; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(Then, at the end of the discourse, Vyāsa, the foremost of speakers, spoke that speech again to him, the lord who sees with wisdom, being pleased, of great brilliance, the best of all knowers of the Veda.)
Then, at the end of the discourse, Vyāsa—the foremost among speakers, the best of all knowers of the Vedas, of great brilliance—being pleased, again addressed that lord possessed of the eye of wisdom with these words. (15-36-15)
विदितं मम राजेन्द्र यत्ते हृदि विवक्षितम्। दह्यमानस्य शोकेन तव पुत्रकृतेन वै ॥१५-३६-१६॥
viditaṃ mama rājendra yat te hṛdi vivakṣitam। dahyamānasya śokena tava putrakṛtena vai ॥15-36-16॥
[विदितं (viditam) - known; मम (mama) - to me; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - to you; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (your) heart; विवक्षितम् (vivakṣitam) - intended (to be spoken); दह्यमानस्य (dahyamānasya) - of (one) being burned; शोकेन (śokena) - by grief; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रकृतेन (putrakṛtena) - because of (your) son; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Known to me, O king, is what in your heart was intended to be spoken, of you being burned by grief indeed because of your son.)
O king, I know what you wished to say in your heart, as you are indeed being consumed by grief for your son. (15-36-16)
गान्धार्याश्चैव यद्दुःखं हृदि तिष्ठति पार्थिव। कुन्त्याश्च यन्महाराज द्रौपद्याश्च हृदि स्थितम् ॥१५-३६-१७॥
gāndhāryāścaiva yad duḥkhaṃ hṛdi tiṣṭhati pārthiva। kuntyāśca yan mahārāja draupadyāśca hṛdi sthitam ॥15-36-17॥
[गान्धार्याः (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gandhari; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which; दुःखं (duḥkham) - sorrow; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kunti; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; द्रौपद्यास् (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadi; च (ca) - and; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; स्थितम् (sthitam) - abides;]
(O king, indeed, whatever sorrow of Gandhari remains in the heart, and whatever (sorrow) of Kunti, O great king, and of Draupadi abides in the heart.)
O king, the sorrow that remains in the heart of Gandhari, and also that which is in the heart of Kunti and Draupadi, O great king. (15-36-17)
यच्च धारयते तीव्रं दुःखं पुत्रविनाशजम्। सुभद्रा कृष्णभगिनी तच्चापि विदितं मम ॥१५-३६-१८॥
yac ca dhārayate tīvraṃ duḥkhaṃ putravināśajam. subhadrā kṛṣṇabhaginī tac cāpi viditaṃ mama ॥15-36-18॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; धारयते (dhārayate) - bears; तीव्रं (tīvraṃ) - intense; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - suffering; पुत्रविनाशजम् (putravināśajam) - arising from the loss of a son; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā; कृष्णभगिनी (kṛṣṇabhaginī) - sister of Kṛṣṇa; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; मम (mama) - to me;]
(And which intense suffering arising from the loss of a son bears, Subhadrā, the sister of Kṛṣṇa, that also is known to me.)
And the intense suffering, arising from the loss of her son, which Subhadrā, the sister of Kṛṣṇa, endures—that too is known to me. (15-36-18)
श्रुत्वा समागममिमं सर्वेषां वस्ततो नृप। संशयच्छेदनायाहं प्राप्तः कौरवनन्दन ॥१५-३६-१९॥
śrutvā samāgamam imaṁ sarveṣāṁ vastato nṛpa। saṁśayacchedanāyāhaṁ prāptaḥ kauravanandana ॥15-36-19॥

O king, having truly heard of this assembly of all, I have arrived, O delight of the Kauravas, for the removal of doubt. (15-36-19)
इमे च देवगन्धर्वाः सर्वे चैव महर्षयः। पश्यन्तु तपसो वीर्यमद्य मे चिरसम्भृतम् ॥१५-३६-२०॥
ime ca devagandharvāḥ sarve caiva maharṣayaḥ। paśyantu tapaso vīryam adya me cirasambhṛtam॥15-36-20॥
[इमे (ime) - these; च (ca) - and; देवगन्धर्वाः (devagandharvāḥ) - the devas and gandharvas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; पश्यन्तु (paśyantu) - let them see; तपसः (tapasāḥ) - of austerity; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - energy; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - my; चिरसम्भृतम् (cirasambhṛtam) - long-accumulated;]
(These and the devas and gandharvas, all and indeed the great sages, let them see the energy of austerity today, my long-accumulated.)
Let all these devas and gandharvas, as well as all the great sages, witness today the energy of my long-accumulated austerity. (15-36-20)
तदुच्यतां महाबाहो कं कामं प्रदिशामि ते। प्रवणोऽस्मि वरं दातुं पश्य मे तपसो बलम् ॥१५-३६-२१॥
tad ucyatāṃ mahābāho kaṃ kāmaṃ pratiśāmi te। pravaṇo'smi varaṃ dātuṃ paśya me tapaso balam ॥15-36-21॥

(That let it be spoken, O mighty-armed, which desire I shall grant to you. Disposed I am to give a boon; see my austerity's power. (15-36-21))
O mighty-armed, let that wish be spoken which you want—I am ready to grant you a boon. See the power of my austerity. (15-36-21)
एवमुक्तः स राजेन्द्रो व्यासेनामितबुद्धिना। मुहूर्तमिव सञ्चिन्त्य वचनायोपचक्रमे ॥१५-३६-२२॥
evam-uktaḥ sa rājendraḥ vyāsena-amita-buddhinā। muhūrtam-iva sañcintya vacanāya-upacakrame ॥15-36-22॥

(Thus having been addressed he, O king, by Vyāsa of limitless intelligence, for a moment as if having reflected, for speaking he began.)
Thus addressed by Vyāsa of limitless intelligence, the king, after reflecting for a moment, began to speak. (15-36-22)
धन्योऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोऽस्मि सफलं जीवितं च मे। यन्मे समागमोऽद्येह भवद्भिः सह साधुभिः ॥१५-३६-२३॥
dhanyo'smy-anugṛhīto'smi saphalaṃ jīvitaṃ ca me। yan me samāgamo'dya iha bhavadbhiḥ saha sādhubhiḥ॥15-36-23॥
[धन्यः (dhanyaḥ) - blessed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अनुगृहीतः (anugṛhītaḥ) - favored; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; सफलम् (saphalam) - successful; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; यत् (yat) - that; मे (me) - to me; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - with you (respected ones); सह (saha) - together with; साधुभिः (sādhubhiḥ) - with the virtuous;]
(Blessed I am, favored I am, successful my life also; that to me meeting today here with you together with the virtuous.)
I am blessed, I am favored, and my life is fulfilled because today I have met you here, together with other virtuous ones. (15-36-23)
अद्य चाप्यवगच्छामि गतिमिष्टामिहात्मनः। भवद्भिर्ब्रह्मकल्पैर्यत्समेतोऽहं तपोधनाः ॥१५-३६-२४॥
adya cāpyavagacchāmi gatimiṣṭāmihātmanaḥ। bhavadbhirbrahmakalpairyatsameto'ham tapodhanāḥ॥15-36-24॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अवगच्छामि (avagacchāmi) - I understand; गति (gati) - path; इष्टाम् (iṣṭām) - desired; इह (iha) - here; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (respectful plural); ब्रह्मकल्पैः (brahmakalpaiḥ) - equal to Brahmā; यत् (yat) - that which; समेतः (sametaḥ) - having joined; अहम् (aham) - I; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - O ascetics (whose wealth is austerity);]
(Today and also I understand the desired path here of the self; by you equal to Brahmā, that which having joined I, O ascetics.)
Today, I also understand the desired path here for the self, which I have attained by joining with you, O ascetics equal to Brahmā. (15-36-24)
दर्शनादेव भवतां पूतोऽहं नात्र संशयः। विद्यते न भयं चापि परलोकान्ममानघाः ॥१५-३६-२५॥
darśanādeva bhavatāṁ pūto'haṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ। vidyate na bhayaṁ cāpi paralokān mamānaghāḥ॥15-36-25॥
[दर्शनात् एव (darśanāt eva) - from the very seeing; truly; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you (plural); पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; cleansed; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; in this matter; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; न (na) - not; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; परलोकात् (paralokāt) - from the other world; afterlife; मम (mama) - my; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - sinless ones (addressed to you);]
(From the very seeing of you, purified I am; not here (is) doubt; exists not fear also from the afterlife, of mine, O sinless ones.)
Truly, by just seeing you I have been purified; there is no doubt about this. Nor do I have any fear of the afterlife, O sinless ones. (15-36-25)
किं तु तस्य सुदुर्बुद्धेर्मन्दस्यापनयैर्भृशम्। दूयते मे मनो नित्यं स्मरतः पुत्रगृद्धिनः ॥१५-३६-२६॥
kiṁ tu tasya sudurbuddher mandasyāpanayair bhṛśam। dūyate me mano nityaṁ smarataḥ putragṛddhinaḥ॥15-36-26॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - however; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सुदुर्बुद्धेः (sudurbuddheḥ) - of very ill-intellectual; मन्दस्य (mandasya) - of the dull; अपनयैः (apanayaiḥ) - by depraved acts; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; दूयते (dūyate) - is afflicted; मे (me) - my; मनो (mano) - mind; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; स्मरतः (smarataḥ) - remembering; पुत्रगृद्धिनः (putragṛddhinaḥ) - of the greed for sons;]
(What however, of him, of very ill-intellectual, of the dull, by depraved acts, exceedingly, is afflicted my mind always, remembering of the greed for sons.)
However, my mind is exceedingly afflicted always as I remember that very dull, ill-intentioned one and his greed for sons. (15-36-26)
अपापाः पाण्डवा येन निकृताः पापबुद्धिना। घातिता पृथिवी चेयं सहसा सनरद्विपा ॥१५-३६-२७॥
apāpāḥ pāṇḍavā yena nikṛtāḥ pāpabuddhinā। ghātitā pṛthivī ceyaṃ sahasā sanaradvipā ॥15-36-27॥
[अपापाः (apāpāḥ) - not-sinful; blameless; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; sons of Pāṇḍu; येन (yena) - by whom; निकृताः (nikṛtāḥ) - deceived; wronged; पापबुद्धिना (pāpabuddhinā) - with wicked mind; घातिता (ghātitā) - destroyed; slain; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyaṃ) - this; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; violently; सनरद्विपा (sa-nara-dvipā) - along with men and elephants;]
(Blameless Pāṇḍavas by whom, with wicked mind, were wronged; destroyed (was) the earth also, this, suddenly with men and elephants.)
By whom the blameless Pāṇḍavas were deceitfully wronged with a wicked mind, and this earth, along with men and elephants, was suddenly destroyed. (15-36-27)
राजानश्च महात्मानो नानाजनपदेश्वराः। आगम्य मम पुत्रार्थे सर्वे मृत्युवशं गताः ॥१५-३६-२८॥
rājānaś ca mahātmāno nānā-janapadeśvarāḥ। āgamya mama putrārthe sarve mṛtyuvaśaṃ gatāḥ ॥15-36-28॥
[राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; नानाजनपदेश्वराः (nānā-janapadeśvarāḥ) - lords of various countries; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रार्थे (putrārthe) - for the sake of (my) son; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मृत्युवशं (mṛtyuvaśam) - under the sway of death; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(Kings and great-souled ones, lords of various countries, having come for my son's sake, all have gone under the sway of death.)
Kings, great-souled men, the lords of various lands—all came for my son's sake, and all have succumbed to death. (15-36-28)
ये ते पुत्रांश्च दाराश्च प्राणांश्च मनसः प्रियान्। परित्यज्य गताः शूराः प्रेतराजनिवेशनम् ॥१५-३६-२९॥
ye te putrāṁś ca dārāṁś ca prāṇāṁś ca manasaḥ priyān। parityajya gatāḥ śūrāḥ pretarājaniveśanam ॥15-36-29॥
[ये (ye) - who; ते (te) - those; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; दारान् (dārān) - wives; च (ca) - and; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; च (ca) - and; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of the mind; प्रियान् (priyān) - dear (ones); परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; गताः (gatāḥ) - departed; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; प्रेतराजनिवेशनम् (pretarājaniveśanam) - the abode of the king of the dead (Yama);]
(Who, those sons and wives and lives and dear (ones) of the mind, having abandoned, departed heroes the abode of the king of the dead.)
Those heroes who, abandoning sons, wives, their lives, and all that was dear to their minds, have departed to the abode of the king of the dead (Yama). (15-36-29)
का नु तेषां गतिर्ब्रह्मन्मित्रार्थे ये हता मृधे। तथैव पुत्रपौत्राणां मम ये निहता युधि ॥१५-३६-३०॥
kā nu teṣāṃ gatir brahman mitrārthe ye hatā mṛdhe। tathaiva putra-pautrāṇāṃ mama ye nihatā yudhi ॥15-36-30॥

(What indeed of them the fate, O brāhman, for the sake of a friend who were slain in battle? Likewise, of sons and grandsons of me, who were killed in battle.)
O brāhman, what indeed is the fate of those who were slain in battle for the sake of a friend? Likewise, what is the fate of my sons and grandsons who were killed in battle? (15-36-30)
दूयते मे मनोऽभीक्ष्णं घातयित्वा महाबलम्। भीष्मं शान्तनवं वृद्धं द्रोणं च द्विजसत्तमम् ॥१५-३६-३१॥
dūyate me mano'bhīkṣṇaṃ ghātayitvā mahā-balam। bhīṣmaṃ śāntanavaṃ vṛddhaṃ droṇaṃ ca dvija-sattamam ॥15-36-31॥
[दूयते (dūyate) - is distressed; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - constantly; घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused to be slain; महाबलम् (mahā-balam) - very powerful; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवम् (śāntanavam) - son of Śāntanu; वृद्धम् (vṛddham) - aged; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; च (ca) - and; द्विजसत्तमम् (dvija-sattamam) - best among the twice-born (brāhmaṇas);]
(Is distressed my mind constantly, having caused to be slain the very powerful Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, aged, and Droṇa, the best among the twice-born.)
My mind is constantly distressed, having caused the death of the mighty and aged Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, and Droṇa, the foremost among brāhmaṇas. (15-36-31)
मम पुत्रेण मूढेन पापेन सुहृदद्विषा। क्षयं नीतं कुलं दीप्तं पृथिवीराज्यमिच्छता ॥१५-३६-३२॥
mama putreṇa mūḍhena pāpena suhṛdadviṣā। kṣayaṃ nītaṃ kulaṃ dīptaṃ pṛthivīrājyam icchatā ॥15-36-32॥
[मम (mama) - of me; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by (my) son; मूढेन (mūḍhena) - deluded; पापेन (pāpena) - sinful; सुहृदद्विषा (suhṛdadviṣā) - hating friends; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; नीतं (nītam) - brought; कुलम् (kulam) - the family; दीप्तम् (dīptam) - illustrious; पृथिवीराज्यम् (pṛthivīrājyam) - earthly kingdom; इच्छता (icchatā) - desiring;]
(By my son, deluded, sinful, hating friends, desiring earthly kingdom, the illustrious family has been brought to destruction.)
My son, deluded, sinful, a hater of friends, desiring the kingdom of the earth, has brought our illustrious family to ruin. (15-36-32)
एतत्सर्वमनुस्मृत्य दह्यमानो दिवानिशम्। न शान्तिमधिगच्छामि दुःखशोकसमाहतः ॥ इति मे चिन्तयानस्य पितः शर्म न विद्यते ॥१५-३६-३३॥
etatsarvamanusmṛtya dahyamāno divāniśam। na śāntimadhigacchāmi duḥkhaśokasamāhataḥ ॥ iti me cintayānasya pitaḥ śarma na vidyate ॥15-36-33॥
[एतत्-सर्वम्-अनुस्मृत्य (etat-sarvam-anusmṛtya) - this all having remembered; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - being burned; दिवा-निशम् (divā-niśam) - day and night; न (na) - not; शान्तिम्-अधिगच्छामि (śāntim-adhigacchāmi) - peace I attain; दुःख-शोक-समाहतः (duḥkha-śoka-samāhataḥ) - afflicted by pain and grief; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - for me; चिन्तयानस्य (cintayānasya) - who is thinking; पितः (pitaḥ) - O father; शर्म (śarma) - comfort; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(Having remembered all this, being burned day and night, not peace I attain, afflicted by pain and grief. Thus, for me who is thinking, O father, comfort does not exist. (15-36-33))
Remembering all this, I am continually consumed day and night and, afflicted by pain and grief, do not find peace. Thus, O father, for me who is pondering, there is no comfort. (15-36-33)
