तच्छ्रुत्वा विविधं तस्य राजर्षेः परिदेवितम्। पुनर्नवीकृतः शोको गान्धार्या जनमेजय ॥१५-३७-१॥
tac chrutvā vividhaṃ tasya rājarṣeḥ paridevitam। punar navīkṛtaḥ śokaḥ gāndhāryā janamejaya ॥15-37-1॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विविधं (vividham) - various; तस्य (tasya) - of him; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; परिदेवितम् (paridevitam) - lamentation; पुनः (punar) - again; नवीकृतः (navīkṛtaḥ) - renewed; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gāndhārī; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - [O] Janamejaya;]
(That having heard the various lamentation of him, the royal sage, again renewed grief of Gāndhārī, Janamejaya.)
Janamejaya, upon hearing the various lamentations of the royal sage, the grief of Gāndhārī was renewed again. (15-37-1)
कुन्त्या द्रुपदपुत्र्याश्च सुभद्रायास्तथैव च। तासां च वरनारीणां वधूनां कौरवस्य ह ॥१५-३७-२॥
kuntiyā drupadaputryāś ca subhadrāyās tathaiva ca। tāsāṃ ca varanārīṇāṃ vadhūnāṃ kauravasya ha॥15-37-2॥
[कुन्त्या (kuntiyā) - of Kunti; द्रुपदपुत्र्याः (drupadaputryāḥ) - of Drupada's daughter (i.e., Draupadi); च (ca) - and; सुभद्रायाः (subhadrāyāḥ) - of Subhadra; तथैव (tathaiva) - similarly; च (ca) - and; तासां (tāsām) - of those; च (ca) - and; वरनारीणां (varanārīṇām) - of the best women; वधूनां (vadhūnām) - of brides; कौरवस्य (kauravasya) - of Kaurava; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Of Kunti, and of Drupada's daughter, and of Subhadra similarly, and of those best women, brides of Kaurava indeed.)
Of Kunti, Drupada's daughter, Subhadra likewise, and of those excellent women, the brides of Kaurava indeed. (15-37-2)
पुत्रशोकसमाविष्टा गान्धारी त्विदमब्रवीत्। श्वशुरं बद्धनयना देवी प्राञ्जलिरुत्थिता ॥१५-३७-३॥
putraśokasamāviṣṭā gāndhārī tvidamabravīt। śvaśuraṃ baddhanayanā devī prāñjalirutthitā ॥15-37-3॥

(Filled with the grief of her son, Gāndhārī, but this spoke to her father-in-law, with bound eyes, the lady, with folded hands, having risen.)
Gāndhārī, filled with grief for her son, rose with folded hands, her eyes covered, and addressed her father-in-law. (15-37-3)
षोडशेमानि वर्षाणि गतानि मुनिपुङ्गव। अस्य राज्ञो हतान्पुत्राञ्शोचतो न शमो विभो ॥१५-३७-४॥
ṣoḍaśemāni varṣāṇi gatāni muni-puṅgava। asya rājño hatān putrān śocato na śamo vibho ॥15-37-4॥
[षोडश (ṣoḍaśa) - sixteen; इमानि (imāni) - these; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years (neuter plural); गतानि (gatāni) - have passed; मुनिपुङ्गव (muni-puṅgava) - O best of sages; अस्य (asya) - of this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - king; हतान् (hatān) - slain; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; शोचतः (śocataḥ) - grieving; न (na) - not; शमः (śamaḥ) - peace; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Sixteen these years have passed, O best of sages. Of this king, grieving for his slain sons, there is no peace, O lord.)
O best of sages, sixteen years have passed; this king, grieving for his slain sons, has found no peace, O lord. (15-37-4)
पुत्रशोकसमाविष्टो निःश्वसन्ह्येष भूमिपः। न शेते वसतीः सर्वा धृतराष्ट्रो महामुने ॥१५-३७-५॥
putraśoka-samāviṣṭo niḥśvasan hyeṣa bhūmipaḥ। na śete vasatīḥ sarvā dhṛtarāṣṭro mahāmune॥15-37-5॥
[पुत्रशोकसमाविष्टः (putraśoka-samāviṣṭaḥ) - overcome by grief for his son; निःश्वसन् (niḥśvasan) - sighing; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; भूमिपः (bhūmipaḥ) - king; न (na) - not; शेते (śete) - lies; वसतीः (vasatīḥ) - palaces; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(Overcome by grief for his son, sighing indeed, this king Dhritarashtra does not lie in all the palaces, O great sage.)
O great sage, this king Dhritarashtra, overcome by grief for his son and sighing, does not rest in any of the palaces. (15-37-5)
लोकानन्यान्समर्थोऽसि स्रष्टुं सर्वांस्तपोबलात्। किमु लोकान्तरगतान्राज्ञो दर्शयितुं सुतान् ॥१५-३७-६॥
lokān anyān samartho 'si sraṣṭuṃ sarvān tapobalāt। kimu lokāntaragatān rājño darśayituṃ sutān ॥15-37-6॥
[लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; असि (asi) - you are; स्रष्टुम् (sraṣṭum) - to create; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तपःबलात् (tapo-balāt) - by the power of austerity; किमु (kimu) - what to say of; लोकान्तरगतान् (lokāntara-gatān) - who have gone to another world; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; दर्शयितुम् (darśayitum) - to show; सुतान् (sutān) - sons;]
(You are capable, by the power of austerity, to create all other worlds; what to say then of showing to the king the sons who have gone to another world.)
By the power of your austerity, you are able to create all other worlds; so surely you can show the king his sons who have passed on to another world. (15-37-6)
इयं च द्रौपदी कृष्णा हतज्ञातिसुता भृशम्। शोचत्यतीव साध्वी ते स्नुषाणां दयिता स्नुषा ॥१५-३७-७॥
iyaṃ ca draupadī kṛṣṇā hatajñātisutā bhṛśam। śocatīva sādhvī te snuṣāṇāṃ dayitā snuṣā ॥15-37-7॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this (f.); च (ca) - and; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (epithet of Draupadī); हतज्ञातिसुता (hatajñātisutā) - whose relatives' sons have been slain; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; शोचति (śocati) - suffers/grieves; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous one; ते (te) - of you; स्नुषाणाम् (snuṣāṇām) - of daughters-in-law; दयिता (dayitā) - beloved; स्नुषा (snuṣā) - daughter-in-law;]
(This and Draupadī, Kṛṣṇā, whose relatives' sons have been slain, greatly suffers, exceedingly, virtuous one, of you, of daughters-in-law, beloved, daughter-in-law.)
This Draupadī, Kṛṣṇā, whose relatives' sons have been killed, grieves greatly; the virtuous one, your beloved daughter-in-law among daughters-in-law. (15-37-7)
तथा कृष्णस्य भगिनी सुभद्रा भद्रभाषिणी। सौभद्रवधसन्तप्ता भृशं शोचति भामिनी ॥१५-३७-८॥
tathā kṛṣṇasya bhaginī subhadrā bhadrabhāṣiṇī। saubhradavadhasantaptā bhṛśaṃ śocati bhāminī॥15-37-8॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; भगिनी (bhaginī) - sister; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā; भद्रभाषिणी (bhadrabhāṣiṇī) - speaking auspiciously; सौभद्रवधसन्तप्ता (saubhadra-vadha-santaptā) - tormented by the death of Abhimanyu (son of Subhadrā); भृशं (bhṛśam) - greatly; शोचति (śocati) - suffers; mourns; भामिनी (bhāminī) - lady; ॥१५-३७-८॥ (॥15-37-8॥) -;]
(Thus, the sister of Kṛṣṇa, Subhadrā, speaking auspiciously, tormented by the death of her son, greatly mourns, the lady.)
Thus Subhadrā, Kṛṣṇa's sister, who spoke auspiciously, was greatly tormented and grieved by the death of her son Abhimanyu. (15-37-8)
इयं च भूरिश्रवसो भार्या परमदुःखिता। भर्तृव्यसनशोकार्ता न शेते वसतीः प्रभो ॥१५-३७-९॥
iyaṁ ca bhūriśravaso bhāryā paramaduḥkhitā। bhartṛvyasanaśokārtā na śete vasatīḥ prabho ॥15-37-9॥
[इयं (iyaṁ) - this (woman); च (ca) - and; भूरिश्रवसो (bhūriśravasaḥ) - of Bhūrishravas; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; परमदुःखिता (paramaduḥkhitā) - extremely afflicted by grief; भर्तृव्यसनशोकार्ता (bhartṛvyasanaśokārtā) - distressed by husband’s misfortune and sorrow; न (na) - not; शेते (śete) - sleeps; वसतीः (vasatīḥ) - dwelling places; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(This and Bhūrishravas’s wife, extremely afflicted by grief, distressed by husband’s misfortune and sorrow, does not sleep in the dwelling places, O lord.)
And this is the wife of Bhūrishravas, O lord, who is extremely afflicted by grief, distressed by her husband's misfortune and sorrow, and does not sleep in her dwelling places. (15-37-9)
यस्यास्तु श्वशुरो धीमान्बाह्लीकः स कुरूद्वहः। निहतः सोमदत्तश्च पित्रा सह महारणे ॥१५-३७-१०॥
yasyāstu śvaśuro dhīmān bāhlīkaḥ sa kurūdvahaḥ। nihataḥ somadattaś ca pitrā saha mahāraṇe॥15-37-10॥
[यस्याः (yasyāḥ) - whose (feminine); तु (tu) - but; श्वशुरः (śvaśuraḥ) - father-in-law; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; बाह्लीकः (bāhlīkaḥ) - Bāhlīka; सः (saḥ) - he; कुरूद्वहः (kurūdvahaḥ) - scion of the Kurus; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; सोमदत्तः (somadattaḥ) - Somadatta; च (ca) - and; पित्रा (pitrā) - together with (his) father; सह (saha) - with; महारणे (mahāraṇe) - in the great battle;]
(But whose (feminine) father-in-law, the wise Bāhlīka, he, the scion of the Kurus, was slain, and Somadatta together with (his) father, in the great battle.)
But she, whose father-in-law, the wise Bāhlīka—he, the chief of the Kurus—was slain, and Somadatta too, along with his father, in the great battle. (15-37-10)
श्रीमच्चास्य महाबुद्धेः सङ्ग्रामेष्वपलायिनः। पुत्रस्य ते पुत्रशतं निहतं यद्रणाजिरे ॥१५-३७-११॥
śrī-mac cāsya mahā-buddheḥ saṅgrāmeṣv apalāyinaḥ। putrasya te putra-śataṃ nihataṃ yad raṇājire॥15-37-11॥
[श्रीमत् (śrīmat) - glorious; endowed with fortune; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; महाबुद्धेः (mahā-buddheḥ) - of great intellect; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अपलायिनः (apalāyinaḥ) - not fleeing; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; ते (te) - your; पुत्रशतम् (putraśatam) - hundred sons; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; यत् (yat) - which; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - on the battlefield;]
(Glorious and of him, of great intellect, not fleeing in battles; of your son, the hundred sons which were slain on the battlefield.)
The hundred sons of your son, glorious and of great intellect, who did not flee in battle, were slain on the battlefield. (15-37-11)
तस्य भार्याशतमिदं पुत्रशोकसमाहतम्। पुनः पुनर्वर्धयानं शोकं राज्ञो ममैव च ॥ तेनारम्भेण महता मामुपास्ते महामुने ॥१५-३७-१२॥
tasya bhāryāśatam idaṃ putraśokasamāhatam। punaḥ punarvardhayānaṃ śokaṃ rājño mamaiva ca॥ tenārambheṇa mahatā mām upāste mahāmune॥15-37-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; भार्याशतम् (bhāryāśatam) - hundred wives; इदम् (idam) - this; पुत्रशोकसमाहतम् (putraśoka-samāhatam) - afflicted with grief for (their) son; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; वर्धयानम् (vardhayānam) - increasing; शोकम् (śokam) - grief; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; मम (mama) - of me; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by that; आरम्भेण (ārambheṇa) - beginning; महता (mahatā) - great; माम् (mām) - me; उपास्ते (upāste) - attends; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(Of him, the hundred wives, this afflicted with grief for their son, again and again increasing the grief of the king and of me indeed. By that great beginning, attends to me, O great sage. (15-37-12))
His hundred wives, afflicted with grief for their son, keep increasing the sorrow of the king and of me again and again. Because of that great initiation, grief clings to me, O great sage. (15-37-12)
ये च शूरा महात्मानः श्वशुरा मे महारथाः। सोमदत्तप्रभृतयः का नु तेषां गतिः प्रभो ॥१५-३७-१३॥
ye ca śūrā mahātmānaḥ śvaśurā me mahārathāḥ। somadattaprabhṛtayaḥ kā nu teṣāṃ gatiḥ prabho ॥15-37-13॥
[ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; शूरा (śūrāḥ) - heroes; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled; श्वशुरा (śvaśurāḥ) - fathers-in-law; मे (me) - my; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; सोमदत्तप्रभृतयः (somadatta-prabhṛtayaḥ) - Somadatta and others; का (kā) - what (feminine); नु (nu) - indeed; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; गतिः (gatiḥ) - state; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord;]
(Those heroes and great-souled, fathers-in-law of mine, great chariot-warriors, Somadatta and others, what indeed is their state, O Lord?)
O Lord, those great-souled, heroic fathers-in-law of mine, those great chariot-warriors such as Somadatta—what has become of them?
तव प्रसादाद्भगवन्विशोकोऽयं महीपतिः। कुर्यात्कालमहं चैव कुन्ती चेयं वधूस्तव ॥१५-३७-१४॥
tava prasādādbhagavan viśoko'yaṁ mahīpatiḥ। kuryāt kālam ahaṁ caiva kuntī ca iyaṁ vadhūs tava ॥15-37-14॥
[तव (tava) - of you; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by favor; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; विशोकः (viśokaḥ) - free from sorrow; अयम् (ayam) - this; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - may do; कालम् (kālam) - death; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this; वधूः (vadhūḥ) - bride; तव (tava) - of you;]
(By your favor, O Lord, free from sorrow this king may do death; I and indeed Kuntī and this bride of you.)
O Lord, by your favor, may this king be without sorrow; let death come to me, to Kuntī, and to this your bride. (15-37-14)
इत्युक्तवत्यां गान्धार्यां कुन्ती व्रतकृशानना। प्रच्छन्नजातं पुत्रं तं सस्मारादित्यसम्भवम् ॥१५-३७-१५॥
ity-uktavatyāṃ gāndhāryāṃ kuntī vratakṛśānanā prachchhanna-jātaṃ putraṃ taṃ sasmārādityasambhavam ॥15-37-15॥
[इति-उक्तवत्याम् (iti-uktavatyām) - thus (having) spoken; (when) she had said; गान्धार्याम् (gāndhāryām) - Gāndhārī; (in the presence of); कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; व्रतकृश-आनना (vratakṛśa-ānanā) - by vows emaciated-faced; one whose face was emaciated (by) vows; प्रच्छन्न-जातम् (prachchhanna-jātam) - secretly born; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; तम् (tam) - that; सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; आदित्य-सम्भवम् (āditya-sambhavam) - born from the Sun (god);]
(When Gāndhārī had spoken thus, Kuntī (whose face was emaciated by vows) remembered that secretly born son, that one born from the Sun.)
As Gāndhārī finished speaking, Kuntī, her face emaciated by vows, remembered her secretly born son, the one born of the Sun. (15-37-15)
तामृषिर्वरदो व्यासो दूरश्रवणदर्शनः। अपश्यद्दुःखितां देवीं मातरं सव्यसाचिनः ॥१५-३७-१६॥
tām ṛṣir varado vyāso dūraśravaṇa-darśanaḥ। apaśyat duḥkhitāṃ devīṃ mātaraṃ savyasācinaḥ॥15-37-16॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; वरदः (varadaḥ) - bestower of boons; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; दूरश्रवणदर्शनः (dūraśravaṇa-darśanaḥ) - one possessing far-hearing and far-seeing; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; दुःखिताम् (duḥkhitām) - distressed; देवीम् (devīm) - goddess; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna);]
(Her, the sage, bestower of boons, Vyāsa, of far-hearing and far-seeing, saw—the distressed goddess, the mother of Savyasācin.)
The sage Vyāsa, who bestows boons and possesses far-reaching hearing and sight, saw her—the grieving goddess, mother of Savyasācin (Arjuna). (15-37-16)
तामुवाच ततो व्यासो यत्ते कार्यं विवक्षितम्। तद्ब्रूहि त्वं महाप्राज्ञे यत्ते मनसि वर्तते ॥१५-३७-१७॥
tām uvāca tato vyāso yat te kāryaṃ vivakṣitam। tad brūhi tvaṃ mahāprājñe yat te manasi vartate॥15-37-17॥
[ताम् (tām) - to her; उवाच (uvāca) - he said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - your; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - purpose; विवक्षितम् (vivakṣitam) - desired to be spoken; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; महाप्राज्ञे (mahāprājñe) - O highly wise one; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - your; मनसि (manasi) - in (your) mind; वर्तते (vartate) - exists;]
(To her Vyāsa then said, "What purpose of yours, desired to be spoken, that speak, O highly wise one, what in your mind exists." (15-37-17))
Then Vyāsa said to her, "O highly wise one, speak that purpose which you desire to tell, whatever exists in your mind." (15-37-17)
ततः कुन्ती श्वशुरयोः प्रणम्य शिरसा तदा। उवाच वाक्यं सव्रीडं विवृण्वाना पुरातनम् ॥१५-३७-१८॥
tataḥ kuntī śvaśurayoḥ praṇamya śirasā tadā। uvāca vākyaṃ savrīḍaṃ vivṛṇvānā purātanam ॥15-37-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; श्वशुरयोः (śvaśurayoḥ) - of the two fathers-in-law; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (her) head; तदा (tadā) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; सव्रीडं (savrīḍaṃ) - with modesty; विवृण्वाना (vivṛṇvānā) - (she) revealing; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient;]
(Then Kuntī, having bowed with (her) head to the two fathers-in-law, then spoke words with modesty, revealing (something) ancient.)
