bhagavañchvaśuro me'si daivatasya-api daivatam। sa me devātidevas-tvaṁ śṛṇu satyāṁ giraṁ mama ॥15-38-1॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; श्वशुरः (śvaśuraḥ) - father-in-law; मे (me) - my; असि (asi) - you are; दैवतस्य (daivatasya) - of the deity; अपि (api) - even; दैवतम् (daivatam) - divinity; god; सः (saḥ) - he; मे (me) - my; देवातिदेवः (devātidevaḥ) - the god beyond the gods; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; सत्याम् (satyām) - truthful; गिरम् (giram) - speech; मम (mama) - my;]
(O venerable one, my father-in-law, you are. Of the deity even, (the) divinity. He, my god beyond the gods— you. Hear truthful speech of mine. (15-38-1))
O venerable one, you are my father-in-law, and even among the gods, you are the divinity. You, my god beyond the gods—listen to my truthful words. (15-38-1)
तपस्वी कोपनो विप्रो दुर्वासा नाम मे पितुः। भिक्षामुपागतो भोक्तुं तमहं पर्यतोषयम् ॥१५-३८-२॥
tapasvī kopano vipro durvāsā nāma me pituḥ। bhikṣām-upāgato bhoktuṃ tam-ahaṃ paryatoṣayam ॥15-38-2॥
[तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; कोपनः (kopanaḥ) - prone to anger; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; दुर्वासा (durvāsā) - Durvāsa (proper name); नाम (nāma) - named; मे (me) - of my; पितुः (pituḥ) - father; भिक्षाम् (bhikṣām) - alms; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - arrived; भोक्तुम् (bhoktum) - to eat; तम् (tam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; पर्यतोषयम् (paryatoṣayam) - satisfied;]
(ascetic angry Brāhmaṇa Durvāsa named of my father alms arrived to eat him I satisfied.)
The ascetic, angry Brāhmaṇa named Durvāsa came to my father's (place) for alms to eat; I satisfied him. (15-38-2)
शौचेन त्वागसस्त्यागैः शुद्धेन मनसा तथा। कोपस्थानेष्वपि महत्स्वकुप्यं न कदाचन ॥१५-३८-३॥
śaucena tvāgasastyāgaiḥ śuddhena manasā tathā। kopasthāneṣvapi mahatsvakupyaṃ na kadācana ॥15-38-3॥
[शौचेन (śaucena) - by purity; त्वा (tva) - by you; अगसः (agasaḥ) - of faults; त्यागैः (tyāgaiḥ) - by renunciations; शुद्धेन (śuddhena) - by purified; मनसा (manasā) - mind; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; कोपस्थानेषु (kopasthāneṣu) - in occasions for anger; अपि (api) - even; महत्सु (mahatsu) - in great (situations); अकुप्यं (akupyaṃ) - not to be angry; न (na) - not; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(By purity, by the abandonment of faults by you, by a purified mind likewise; even on great occasions for anger, never should (one) be angry.)
Through purity, by your abandonment of faults, and by a purified mind, even in great situations for anger, never become angry. (15-38-3)
स मे वरमदात्प्रीतः कृतमित्यहमब्रुवम्। अवश्यं ते ग्रहीतव्यमिति मां सोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥१५-३८-४॥
sa me varam-adāt prītaḥ kṛtam iti aham abruvam। avaśyaṃ te grahītavyam iti māṃ sa abravīd vacaḥ ॥15-38-4॥
[स (sa) - he; मे (me) - to me; वरमदात् (varam-adāt) - boon he gave; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; इति (iti) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - said; अवश्यम् (avaśyam) - certainly; ते (te) - by you; ग्रहीतव्यम् (grahītavyam) - must be accepted; इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - to me; सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - word;]
(He, to me, the boon gave, pleased. "Done," thus I said. "Certainly by you it must be accepted," thus to me he said (the) word.)
He, pleased, gave me a boon. I said, "It is done." He then said to me, "Certainly, you must accept it." (15-38-4)
ततः शापभयाद्विप्रमवोचं पुनरेव तम्। एवमस्त्विति च प्राह पुनरेव स मां द्विजः ॥१५-३८-५॥
tataḥ śāpabhayād vipram avocaṃ punar eva tam। evam astv iti ca prāha punar eva sa māṃ dvijaḥ॥15-38-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शापभयात् (śāpabhayāt) - from fear of a curse; विप्रम् (vipram) - the Brāhmaṇa; अवोचम् (avocam) - I spoke; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; तम् (tam) - to him; एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa;]
(Then, from fear of a curse, to the Brāhmaṇa I spoke again indeed to him. "Thus let it be," and he spoke again indeed to me, the Brāhmaṇa.)
Then, out of fear of a curse, I again addressed that Brāhmaṇa, and he replied to me again, saying, "So be it," (15-38-5)
धर्मस्य जननी भद्रे भवित्री त्वं वरानने। वशे स्थास्यन्ति ते देवा यांस्त्वमावाहयिष्यसि ॥१५-३८-६॥
dharmasya jananī bhadre bhavitrī tvaṃ varānane। vaśe sthāsyanti te devā yāṃs tvaṃ āvāhayiṣyasi ॥15-38-6॥
[धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; of righteousness; जननी (jananī) - mother; generator; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; O blessed; भवित्री (bhavitrī) - who shall be; who will become; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वरानने (varānane) - O beautiful-faced one; O best-faced one; वशे (vaśe) - under control; in the power; स्थास्यन्ति (sthāsyanti) - will remain; will stand; ते (te) - of you; your; देवा (devā) - gods; याञ् (yāṃs) - whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आवाहयिष्यसि (āvāhayiṣyasi) - you will invoke;]
(Mother of dharma, O auspicious one, you will become, O beautiful-faced one. Under your control will remain the gods whom you will invoke.)
O auspicious one, you will be the mother of dharma; O beautiful-faced one, the gods whom you invoke will remain under your control. (15-38-6)
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हितो विप्रस्ततोऽहं विस्मिताभवम्। न च सर्वास्ववस्थासु स्मृतिर्मे विप्रणश्यति ॥१५-३८-७॥
ity uktvā antarhito vipras tato'haṁ vismitābhavam। na ca sarvāsu avasthāsu smṛtir me vipra naśyati ॥15-38-7॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; अभवम् (abhavam) - became; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; अवस्थासु (avasthāsu) - states; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory; मे (me) - my; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; नश्यति (naśyati) - is lost;]
(Thus having said, the Brāhmaṇa disappeared. Then I became astonished. And, in all states, my memory, O Brāhmaṇa, is not lost.)
Having thus spoken, the Brāhmaṇa disappeared. Then I was astonished. And in all conditions, my memory, O Brāhmaṇa, does not fail. (15-38-7)
अथ हर्म्यतलस्थाहं रविमुद्यन्तमीक्षती। संस्मृत्य तदृषेर्वाक्यं स्पृहयन्ती दिवाकरम् ॥ स्थिताहं बालभावेन तत्र दोषमबुध्यती ॥१५-३८-८॥
atha harmya-tala-sthāhaṁ ravim udyantam īkṣatī। saṁsmṛtya tad ṛṣer vākyaṁ spṛhayantī divākaram ॥ sthitāhaṁ bāla-bhāvena tatra doṣam abudhyatī ॥15-38-8॥
[अथ (atha) - then; हर्म्यतलस्थाहं (harmya-tala-sthā aham) - I standing on the palace terrace; रविमुद्यन्तमीक्षती (ravim udyantam īkṣatī) - gazing at the rising sun; संस्मृत्य (saṁsmṛtya) - having remembered; तदृषेर्वाक्यं (tad ṛṣer vākyaṁ) - that sage’s word; स्पृहयन्ती (spṛhayantī) - longing; दिवाकरम् (divākaram) - the sun; स्थिताहं (sthitā aham) - I remained; बालभावेन (bāla-bhāvena) - with childish disposition; तत्र (tatra) - there; दोषम (doṣam) - fault; अबुध्यती (abudhyatī) - not understanding;]
(Then, I standing on the palace terrace, gazing at the rising sun, having remembered that sage’s word, longing for the sun, I remained with childlike disposition there, not understanding fault.)
Then, standing on the palace terrace, I gazed at the rising sun. Remembering the sage’s words, I longed for the sun. I stayed there with a child’s mind, not realizing the fault in this. (15-38-8)
अथ देवः सहस्रांशुर्मत्समीपगतोऽभवत्। द्विधा कृत्वात्मनो देहं भूमौ च गगनेऽपि च ॥ तताप लोकानेकेन द्वितीयेनागमच्च माम् ॥१५-३८-९॥
atha devaḥ sahasrāṃśur matsamīpagato'bhavat। dvidhā kṛtvātmanaḥ dehaṃ bhūmau ca gagane'pi ca ॥ tatāpa lokān ekena dvitīyena āgamac ca mām ॥15-38-9॥
[अथ (atha) - then; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; सहस्रांशुः (sahasrāṃśuḥ) - the thousand-rayed (sun); मत्समीपगतः (matsamīpagataḥ) - having approached me; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two ways; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; देहम् (deham) - body; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the earth; च (ca) - and; गगने (gagane) - in the sky; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; तताप (tatāpa) - warmed; लोकान् (lokān) - the worlds; एकेन (ekena) - with one; द्वितीयेन (dvitīyena) - with the second; आगमत् (āgamat) - came; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - to me;]
(Then the god, the thousand-rayed (sun), having approached me, became; having made his body twofold, on the earth and also in the sky; with one, he warmed the worlds; with the second, he came to me.)
Then the god, the thousand-rayed Sun, came near me. Dividing his body in two, he placed himself both on the earth and in the sky. With one (form) he heated the worlds, and with the second he came to me. (15-38-9)
स मामुवाच वेपन्तीं वरं मत्तो वृणीष्व ह। गम्यतामिति तं चाहं प्रणम्य शिरसावदम् ॥१५-३८-१०॥
sa mām uvāca vepantīṃ varaṃ matto vṛṇīṣva ha। gamyatām iti taṃ ca ahaṃ praṇamya śirasā avadam ॥15-38-10॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वेपन्तीं (vepantīm) - trembling (feminine accusative singular); वरम् (varam) - a boon; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; ह (ha) - indeed; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (me) go; इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - to him; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (my) head; अवदम् (avadam) - said;]
(He said to me, trembling, 'Choose a boon from me indeed.' 'Let me go' — to him, and I having bowed with (my) head, said.)
He said to me, who was trembling, 'Ask a boon from me.' I bowed my head to him and said, 'Let me go.' (15-38-10)
स मामुवाच तिग्मांशुर्वृथाह्वानं न ते क्षमम्। धक्ष्यामि त्वां च विप्रं च येन दत्तो वरस्तव ॥१५-३८-११॥
sa mām uvāca tigmāṃśuḥ vṛthā āhvānam na te kṣamam। dhakṣyāmi tvām ca vipram ca yena dattaḥ varaḥ tava ॥15-38-11॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तिग्मांशुः (tigmāṃśuḥ) - the one with sharp rays; the Sun; वृथाह्वानम् (vṛthā-āhvānam) - uselessly called; न (na) - not; ते (te) - by you; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; धक्ष्यामि (dhakṣyāmi) - I will burn; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; विप्रम् (vipram) - the sage; च (ca) - and; येन (yena) - by whom; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - given; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; तव (tava) - to you;]
(He said to me, the Sun: 'Useless calling is not proper for you. I will burn you and the sage by whom the boon was given to you.')
The Sun said to me, 'Your calling in vain is not right. I will burn you and also the sage who granted you that boon.' (15-38-11)
तमहं रक्षती विप्रं शापादनपराधिनम्। पुत्रो मे त्वत्समो देव भवेदिति ततोऽब्रुवम् ॥१५-३८-१२॥
tam ahaṃ rakṣatī vipraṃ śāpād anaparādhinam। putro me tvat-samo deva bhaved iti tato 'bruvam ॥15-38-12॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; रक्षती (rakṣatī) - (I) protect; विप्रम् (vipram) - the brāhmaṇa; शापात् (śāpāt) - from a curse; अनपराधिनम् (anaparādhinam) - not-at-fault; not guilty; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; मे (me) - my; त्वत्समः (tvat-samaḥ) - equal to you; देव (deva) - O god; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; इति (iti) - thus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - I spoke;]
(Him I protect, the brāhmaṇa, from a curse, not guilty; son my equal to you, O god, should be; thus then I spoke.)
I protect that brāhmaṇa, who was not at fault, from the curse. Then I said, "Let my son be equal to you, O god." (15-38-12)
ततो मां तेजसाविश्य मोहयित्वा च भानुमान्। उवाच भविता पुत्रस्तवेत्यभ्यगमद्दिवम् ॥१५-३८-१३॥
tato māṃ tejasāviśya mohayitvā ca bhānumān। uvāca bhavitā putras tavety abhyagamad divam ॥15-38-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; तेजसा (tejasā) - with (his) brilliance; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; मोहयित्वा (mohayitvā) - having bewildered; च (ca) - and; भानुमान् (bhānumān) - the Sun; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your; इति (iti) - thus; अभ्यगमत् (abhyagamat) - he ascended; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven;]
(Then, having entered me with brilliance and bewildered (me), the Sun said: “A son will be yours,” thus he ascended to heaven.)

ततोऽहमन्तर्भवने पितुर्वृत्तान्तरक्षिणी। गूढोत्पन्नं सुतं बालं जले कर्णमवासृजम् ॥१५-३८-१४॥
tato'ham antarbhavane pitur vṛttāntarakṣiṇī। gūḍhotpannaṃ sutaṃ bālaṃ jale karṇam avāsṛjam ॥15-38-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अहम् (aham) - I; अन्तर्भवने (antarbhavane) - within the house; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (my) father; वृत्तान्त-रक्षिणी (vṛttānta-rakṣiṇī) - guardian of the event (secret keeper); गूढोत्पन्नं (gūḍhotpannaṃ) - secretly born; सुतं (sutaṃ) - son; बालं (bālaṃ) - child; जले (jale) - in the water; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna (proper name); अवासृजम् (avāsṛjam) - I released;]
(Thereafter I, within the house, being the guardian of my father's event, secretly born son child, in the water, Karna, I released.)
Thereafter, I, secretly protecting my father's event within the house, released my secretly born child, my son Karna, into the water. (15-38-14)
नूनं तस्यैव देवस्य प्रसादात्पुनरेव तु। कन्याहमभवं विप्र यथा प्राह स मामृषिः ॥१५-३८-१५॥
nūnaṁ tasyaiva devasya prasādāt punar eva tu। kanyāham abhavaṁ vipra yathā prāha sa mām ṛṣiḥ ॥15-38-15॥
[नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of that very; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the favor; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; कन्या (kanyā) - (a) maiden; अहम् (aham) - I; अभवम् (abhavam) - became; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; यथा (yathā) - as; प्राह (prāha) - said; स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - (the) sage;]
(Indeed, by the favor of that very god, again indeed but, (a) maiden I became, O Brāhmaṇa, as he said to me, (the) sage.)
Indeed, by the favor of that very god, I again became a maiden, O Brāhmaṇa, just as the sage had said to me. (15-38-15)
स मया मूढया पुत्रो ज्ञायमानोऽप्युपेक्षितः। तन्मां दहति विप्रर्षे यथा सुविदितं तव ॥१५-३८-१६॥
sa mayā mūḍhayā putro jñāyamāno 'py upekṣitaḥ। tan māṃ dahati viprarṣe yathā suviditaṃ tava॥15-38-16॥
[स (sa) (sa) - he; मया (mayā) (mayā) - by me; मूढया (mūḍhayā) (mūḍhayā) - deluded; पुत्रः (putraḥ) (putraḥ) - son; ज्ञायमानः (jñāyamānaḥ) (jñāyamānaḥ) - being recognized; अपि (api) (api) - even; उपेक्षितः (upekṣitaḥ) (upekṣitaḥ) - neglected; तत् (tat) (tat) - that; माम् (mām) (mām) - me; दहति (dahati) (dahati) - burns; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) (viprarṣe) - O sage among brāhmaṇas; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - as; सुविदितं (suviditaṃ) (suviditaṃ) - well known; तव (tava) (tava) - to you;]
(He by me, deluded, son, being recognized even, neglected; that me burns, O sage among brāhmaṇas, as well known to you.)
Although that son was recognized even by me, deluded as I was, I neglected him; O sage among brāhmaṇas, that burns me, as is well known to you. (15-38-16)
यदि पापमपापं वा तदेतद्विवृतं मया। तन्मे भयं त्वं भगवन्व्यपनेतुमिहार्हसि ॥१५-३८-१७॥
yadi pāpam apāpaṃ vā tad etad vivṛtaṃ mayā। tan me bhayaṃ tvaṃ bhagavan vyapanetum iha arhasi॥15-38-17॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; अपापम् (apāpam) - non-sin; वा (vā) - or; तत् (tat) - that; एतत् (etat) - this; विवृतम् (vivṛtam) - revealed; मया (mayā) - by me; तत् (tat) - therefore; मे (me) - my; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O lord; व्यपनेतुम् (vyapanetum) - to remove; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(If sin or not sin, that this revealed by me, therefore my fear, you O lord to remove here you are worthy.)
O Lord, if what has been revealed by me is a sin or not a sin, therefore, you are worthy here to remove my fear. (15-38-17)
यच्चास्य राज्ञो विदितं हृदिस्थं भवतोऽनघ। तं चायं लभतां काममद्यैव मुनिसत्तम ॥१५-३८-१८॥
yaccāsya rājño viditaṃ hṛdisthaṃ bhavato'nagha। taṃ cāyaṃ labhatāṃ kāmam adyaiva munisattama ॥15-38-18॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विदितम् (viditam) - known; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (the) heart; स्थम् (stham) - abiding; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); लभताम् (labhatām) - may obtain; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; अद्य (adya) - today; एव (eva) - indeed; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages;]
(Which and of this king, [that is] known [and] abiding in (the) heart of you, O sinless one, him and this (person) may obtain desire today indeed, O best of sages.)
O sinless one, whatever is known in the heart of you, of this king, may this person obtain that desire today itself, O best of sages. (15-38-18)
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचेदं व्यासो वेदविदां वरः। साधु सर्वमिदं तथ्यमेवमेव यथात्थ माम् ॥१५-३८-१९॥
ity uktaḥ pratyuvācedaṃ vyāso vedavidāṃ varaḥ। sādhu sarvamidaṃ tathyamevaṃeva yathāttha mām ॥15-38-19॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदं (idaṃ) - this; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; वेदविदां (vedavidām) - of the knowers of the Veda; वरः (varaḥ) - best; साधु (sādhu) - well; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तथ्यम् (tathyam) - true; एवम् (evam) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; अत्थ (attha) - you have told; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Thus having been addressed, Vyāsa, the best of the knowers of the Veda, replied this: "Well, all this is true, indeed exactly as you have told me." (15-38-19))
Thus addressed, Vyāsa, foremost among knowers of the Veda, replied: "Indeed, all this is exactly true just as you have told me." (15-38-19)
अपराधश्च ते नास्ति कन्याभावं गता ह्यसि। देवाश्चैश्वर्यवन्तो वै शरीराण्याविशन्ति वै ॥१५-३८-२०॥
aparādhaś ca te nāsti kanyābhāvaṃ gatā hy asi। devāś caiśvaryavanto vai śarīrāṇy āviśanti vai॥15-38-20॥
[अपराधः (aparādhaḥ) - offence; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; कन्या-भावं (kanyā-bhāvaṃ) - the state of being a maiden; गता (gatā) - gone; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; च (ca) - and; ऐश्वर्यवन्तः (aiśvaryavantaḥ) - possessed of sovereignty; वै (vai) - indeed; शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; आविशन्ति (āviśanti) - enter; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(And offence to you does not exist; maiden state gone indeed you are; the gods and possessed of sovereignty indeed bodies enter indeed.)
You have not committed any offence; you are no longer in the state of maidenhood. The gods, endowed with sovereignty, indeed enter into bodies. (15-38-20)
सन्ति देवनिकायाश्च सङ्कल्पाज्जनयन्ति ये। वाचा दृष्ट्या तथा स्पर्शात्सङ्घर्षेणेति पञ्चधा ॥१५-३८-२१॥
santi devanīkāyāś ca saṅkalpāj janayanti ye। vācā dṛṣṭyā tathā sparśāt saṅgharṣeṇeti pañcadhā ॥15-38-21॥
[सन्ति (santi) - there are; देवनिकायाः (devanikāyāḥ) - groups of deities; च (ca) - and; सङ्कल्पात् (saṅkalpāt) - from thought; जनयन्ति (janayanti) - they produce; ये (ye) - who; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; दृष्ट्या (dṛṣṭyā) - by sight; तथा (tathā) - likewise; स्पर्शात् (sparśāt) - by touch; सङ्घर्षेण (saṅgharṣeṇa) - by friction; इति (iti) - thus; पञ्चधा (pañcadhā) - fivefold;]
(There are, groups of deities and, from thought, they produce, who, by speech, by sight, likewise, by touch, by friction, thus, fivefold.)
There are groups of deities who generate (progeny) in five ways: from thought, by speech, by sight, by touch, and by friction. (15-38-21)
मनुष्यधर्मो दैवेन धर्मेण न हि युज्यते। इति कुन्ति व्यजानीहि व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१५-३८-२२॥
manuṣyadharmo daivena dharmeṇa na hi yujyate। iti kunti vyajānīhi vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ॥15-38-22॥
[मनुष्यधर्मः (manuṣyadharmaḥ) - human duty; दैवेन (daivena) - by destiny; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by law; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; युज्यते (yujyate) - is joined; इति (iti) - thus; कुन्ति (kunti) - O Kunti; व्यजानीहि (vyajānīhi) - know; व्येतु (vyetu) - let depart; ते (te) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - affliction;]
(Human duty by destiny by law not indeed is joined. Thus, O Kunti, know. Let depart your mental affliction.)
Understand, O Kunti, that human duty is indeed not bound by the law of destiny. Thus, let your mental affliction subside. (15-38-22)
सर्वं बलवतां पथ्यं सर्वं बलवतां शुचि। सर्वं बलवतां धर्मः सर्वं बलवतां स्वकम् ॥१५-३८-२३॥
sarvaṃ balavatāṃ pathyaṃ sarvaṃ balavatāṃ śuci। sarvaṃ balavatāṃ dharmaḥ sarvaṃ balavatāṃ svakam ॥15-38-23॥
[सर्वं (sarvam) - everything; बलवतां (balavatām) - of the strong; पथ्यं (pathyam) - wholesome; proper; सर्वं (sarvam) - everything; बलवतां (balavatām) - of the strong; शुचि (śuci) - pure; सर्वं (sarvam) - everything; बलवतां (balavatām) - of the strong; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; law; righteousness; सर्वं (sarvam) - everything; बलवतां (balavatām) - of the strong; स्वकम् (svakam) - one’s own;]
(Everything of the strong is wholesome; everything of the strong is pure; everything of the strong is duty; everything of the strong is one’s own.)
For the strong, everything is proper, everything is pure, everything is righteousness, everything belongs to them. (15-38-23)
