जनमेजयस्य परिक्षिद् दर्शनम्
The vision of Parikṣit, son of Janamejaya.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
अदृष्ट्वा तु नृपः पुत्रान्दर्शनं प्रतिलब्धवान्। ऋषिप्रसादात्पुत्राणां स्वरूपाणां कुरूद्वह ॥१५-४३-१॥
O best of the Kurus, the king, who had not seen his sons, obtained their sight through the favor of the sage, seeing their true forms. (15-43-1)
स राजा राजधर्मांश्च ब्रह्मोपनिषदं तथा। अवाप्तवान्नरश्रेष्ठो बुद्धिनिश्चयमेव च ॥१५-४३-२॥
That king, best among men, had obtained both the royal duties and the teaching concerning the Self, as well as a firm resolve of intellect. (15-43-2)
विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञो ययौ सिद्धिं तपोबलात्। धृतराष्ट्रः समासाद्य व्यासं चापि तपस्विनम् ॥१५-४३-३॥
Vidura, the greatly wise, attained accomplishment through the power of asceticism. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, too, having approached Vyāsa and the ascetic. (15-43-3)
जनमेजय उवाच॥
Janamejaya said.
ममापि वरदो व्यासो दर्शयेत्पितरं यदि। तद्रूपवेषवयसं श्रद्दध्यां सर्वमेव ते ॥१५-४३-४॥
If the boon-giver Vyāsa would show my father also to me, then in that form, appearance, and age I would indeed believe all you say. (15-43-4)
प्रियं मे स्यात्कृतार्थश्च स्यामहं कृतनिश्चयः। प्रसादादृषिपुत्रस्य मम कामः समृध्यताम् ॥१५-४३-५॥
May what is dear to me come to pass, may I be fulfilled and resolute; by the favour of the sage's son, may my desire be accomplished. (15-43-5)
सूत उवाच॥
The Sūta said.
इत्युक्तवचने तस्मिन्नृपे व्यासः प्रतापवान्। प्रसादमकरोद्धीमानानयच्च परिक्षितम् ॥१५-४३-६॥
When that statement had thus been spoken to the king, the mighty and wise Vyāsa bestowed his favor and brought Parikṣit. (15-43-6)
ततस्तद्रूपवयसमागतं नृपतिं दिवः। श्रीमन्तं पितरं राजा ददर्श जनमेजयः ॥१५-४३-७॥
Then king Janamejaya saw his glorious father, the king from heaven, restored to his (former) youthful form. (15-43-7)
शमीकं च महात्मानं पुत्रं तं चास्य शृङ्गिणम्। अमात्या ये बभूवुश्च राज्ञस्तांश्च ददर्श ह ॥१५-४३-८॥
He saw Śamīka and his great-souled son Śṛṅgi, and he also beheld the king's ministers who were there. (15-43-8)
ततः सोऽवभृथे राजा मुदितो जनमेजयः। पितरं स्नापयामास स्वयं सस्नौ च पार्थिवः ॥१५-४३-९॥
Then, at the time of the avabhṛtha (final sacrificial bath), the joyful king Janamejaya caused his father to bathe, and the king himself also bathed. (15-43-9)
स्नात्वा च भरतश्रेष्ठः सोऽऽस्तीकमिदमब्रवीत्। यायावरकुलोत्पन्नं जरत्कारुसुतं तदा ॥१५-४३-१०॥
Having bathed, O best of the Bharatas, he then said this to Āstīka, the son of Jaratkāru who was born in the family of wandering ascetics. (15-43-10)
आस्तीक विविधाश्चर्यो यज्ञोऽयमिति मे मतिः। यदद्यायं पिता प्राप्तो मम शोकप्रणाशनः ॥१५-४३-११॥
My thought is that this sacrifice of various wonders belongs to Āstīka; for today this father who is my remover of sorrow has arrived. (15-43-11)
आस्तीक उवाच॥
Āstīka said.
ऋषिर्द्वैपायनो यत्र पुराणस्तपसो निधिः। यज्ञे कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ तस्य लोकावुभौ जितौ ॥१५-४३-१२॥
Where the sage Dvaipāyana, the ancient treasure of austerity, was present at the sacrifice, O best of the Kuru lineage, both his worlds were conquered. (15-43-12)
श्रुतं विचित्रमाख्यानं त्वया पाण्डवनन्दन। सर्पाश्च भस्मसान्नीता गताश्च पदवीं पितुः ॥१५-४३-१३॥
O joy of the Pāṇḍavas, you have heard the wondrous narrative. The serpents have been led to ashes and have gone to the path of their father. (15-43-13)
कथञ्चित्तक्षको मुक्तः सत्यत्वात्तव पार्थिव। ऋषयः पूजिताः सर्वे गतिं दृष्ट्वा महात्मनः ॥१५-४३-१४॥
Somehow, O king, Takṣaka was set free by your truthfulness. All the sages, having witnessed the passing of the great soul, were honored. (15-43-14)
प्राप्तः सुविपुलो धर्मः श्रुत्वा पापविनाशनम्। विमुक्तो हृदयग्रन्थिरुदारजनदर्शनात् ॥१५-४३-१५॥
By hearing that which destroys sin, one attains great virtue. The knot of the heart is released by the sight of noble people. (15-43-15)
ये च पक्षधरा धर्मे सद्वृत्तरुचयश्च ये। यान्दृष्ट्वा हीयते पापं तेभ्यः कार्या नमस्क्रियाः ॥१५-४३-१६॥
And those birds who are virtuous by nature and established in righteousness, upon seeing whom one's sin is lessened—to them acts of salutations should be offered. (15-43-16)
सूत उवाच॥
Sūta said;
एतच्छ्रुत्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठात्स राजा जनमेजयः। पूजयामास तमृषिमनुमान्य पुनः पुनः ॥१५-४३-१७॥
King Janamejaya, after hearing this from the best of the twice-born, honored the sage again and again with due respect. (15-43-17)
पप्रच्छ तमृषिं चापि वैशम्पायनमच्युतम्। कथावशेषं धर्मज्ञो वनवासस्य सत्तम ॥१५-४३-१८॥
The best among the virtuous, knower of dharma, asked the sage Vaiśampāyana, the infallible one, about the remaining part of the story of the forest dwelling. (15-43-18)
