अदृष्ट्वा तु नृपः पुत्रान्दर्शनं प्रतिलब्धवान्। ऋषिप्रसादात्पुत्राणां स्वरूपाणां कुरूद्वह ॥१५-४३-१॥
adṛṣṭvā tu nṛpaḥ putrān darśanaṃ pratilabdhavān। ṛṣi-prasādāt putrāṇāṃ svarūpāṇāṃ kurūdvaha ॥15-43-1॥
[अदृष्ट्वा (adṛṣṭvā) - without seeing; तु (tu) - but; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; दर्शनं (darśanam) - sight; प्रतिलब्धवान् (pratilabdhavān) - obtained; ऋषिप्रसादात् (ṛṣi-prasādāt) - by the favor of the sage; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of the sons; स्वरूपाणां (svarūpāṇām) - of the forms; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O best of the Kurus;]
(But, without seeing his sons, the king obtained sight (of them); by the favor of the sage, of the forms of his sons, O best of the Kurus.)
O best of the Kurus, the king, who had not seen his sons, obtained their sight through the favor of the sage, seeing their true forms. (15-43-1)
स राजा राजधर्मांश्च ब्रह्मोपनिषदं तथा। अवाप्तवान्नरश्रेष्ठो बुद्धिनिश्चयमेव च ॥१५-४३-२॥
sa rājā rājadharmāṁś ca brahmopaniṣadaṁ tathā। avāptavān naraśreṣṭho buddhi-niścayam eva ca ॥15-43-2॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; राजधर्मान् (rājadarmān) - royal duties; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्म-उपनिषदं (brahma-upaniṣadam) - teaching concerning the Self; तथा (tathā) - also; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - had obtained; नरश्रेष्ठः (naraśreṣṭhaḥ) - best among men; बुद्धि-निश्चयम् (buddhi-niścayam) - firm resolve of intellect; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(He king royal duties and teaching concerning the Self also had obtained, best among men, firm resolve of intellect indeed and.)
That king, best among men, had obtained both the royal duties and the teaching concerning the Self, as well as a firm resolve of intellect. (15-43-2)
विदुरश्च महाप्राज्ञो ययौ सिद्धिं तपोबलात्। धृतराष्ट्रः समासाद्य व्यासं चापि तपस्विनम् ॥१५-४३-३॥
viduraś ca mahāprājño yayau siddhiṃ tapobalāt। dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ samāsādya vyāsaṃ cāpi tapasvinam ॥15-43-3॥
[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - greatly wise; ययौ (yayau) - went; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - accomplishment; तपःबलात् (tapo-balāt) - by the power of asceticism; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; व्यासम् (vyāsam) - Vyāsa; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तपस्विनम् (tapasvinam) - the ascetic;]
(Vidura and the greatly wise one went to accomplishment by the power of asceticism. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having approached Vyāsa and also the ascetic.)
Vidura, the greatly wise, attained accomplishment through the power of asceticism. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, too, having approached Vyāsa and the ascetic. (15-43-3)
जनमेजय उवाच॥
janamejaya uvāca॥

Janamejaya said.
ममापि वरदो व्यासो दर्शयेत्पितरं यदि। तद्रूपवेषवयसं श्रद्दध्यां सर्वमेव ते ॥१५-४३-४॥
mamāpi varado vyāso darśayet pitaraṃ yadi। tad rūpa-veṣa-vayasaṃ śraddadhyāṃ sarvam eva te ॥15-43-4॥
[ममापि (mama api) - of me also; वरदः (varadaḥ) - the boon-giver; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; दर्शयेत् (darśayet) - may show; पितरम् (pitaram) - the father; यदि (yadi) - if; तत् (tat) - that; रूप (rūpa) - form; वेष (veṣa) - appearance; वयसम् (vayasam) - age; श्रद्दध्याम् (śraddadhyām) - I would have faith; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; ते (te) - of yours;]
(Of me also, if boon-giver Vyāsa may show (my) father, then in that form, appearance, age I would have faith in all indeed of yours.)
If the boon-giver Vyāsa would show my father also to me, then in that form, appearance, and age I would indeed believe all you say. (15-43-4)
प्रियं मे स्यात्कृतार्थश्च स्यामहं कृतनिश्चयः। प्रसादादृषिपुत्रस्य मम कामः समृध्यताम् ॥१५-४३-५॥
priyaṃ me syāt kṛtārthaś ca syām ahaṃ kṛtaniścayaḥ। prasādād ṛṣiputrasya mama kāmaḥ samṛdhyatām ॥15-43-5॥
[प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear thing; pleasant thing; मे (me) - to me; for me; स्यात् (syāt) - may it be; let it be; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - one whose object is accomplished; one who has achieved purpose; च (ca) - and; स्याम् (syām) - may I be; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कृतनिश्चयः (kṛtaniścayaḥ) - one of determined resolve; having firm decision; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the favour; by the grace; ऋषिपुत्रस्य (ṛṣiputrasya) - of the son of the sage; मम (mama) - my; of me; कामः (kāmaḥ) - wish; desire; समृध्यताम् (samṛdhyatām) - may it be fulfilled; let it be prospered;]
(Dear thing to me may it be, one whose object is accomplished and may I be, I of determined resolve. By the favour of the son of the sage, my wish may it be fulfilled.)
May what is dear to me come to pass, may I be fulfilled and resolute; by the favour of the sage's son, may my desire be accomplished. (15-43-5)

इत्युक्तवचने तस्मिन्नृपे व्यासः प्रतापवान्। प्रसादमकरोद्धीमानानयच्च परिक्षितम् ॥१५-४३-६॥
ity-ukta-vacane tasmin nṛpe vyāsaḥ pratāpavān। prasādam akarod dhīmān ānayay ca parikṣitam ॥15-43-6॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवचने (ukta-vacane) - when the statement had been spoken; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नृपे (nṛpe) - king; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; आनयत् (ānayat) - brought; च (ca) - and; परिक्षितम् (parikṣitam) - Parikṣit;]
(Thus when that statement had been spoken, in that king, Vyāsa, mighty, did favor, wise, brought and Parikṣit.)
When that statement had thus been spoken to the king, the mighty and wise Vyāsa bestowed his favor and brought Parikṣit. (15-43-6)
ततस्तद्रूपवयसमागतं नृपतिं दिवः। श्रीमन्तं पितरं राजा ददर्श जनमेजयः ॥१५-४३-७॥
tatastad-rūpa-vayasam-āgatam nṛpatiṃ divaḥ। śrīmantam pitaraṃ rājā dadarśa janamejayaḥ ॥15-43-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तद्-रूप-वयसम्-आगतम् (tad-rūpa-vayasam-āgatam) - having attained that form and age; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - king; दिवः (divaḥ) - of heaven; श्रीमन्तम् (śrīmantam) - glorious; पितरं (pitaram) - father; राजा (rājā) - king; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; जनमेजयः (janamejayaḥ) - Janamejaya;]
(Then, Janamejaya the king saw his glorious father, the king of heaven, having attained that (former) form and age.)
Then king Janamejaya saw his glorious father, the king from heaven, restored to his (former) youthful form. (15-43-7)
शमीकं च महात्मानं पुत्रं तं चास्य शृङ्गिणम्। अमात्या ये बभूवुश्च राज्ञस्तांश्च ददर्श ह ॥१५-४३-८॥
śamīkaṁ ca mahātmānaṁ putraṁ taṁ cāsya śṛṅgiṇam। amātyā ye babhūvuśca rājñastaāṁśca dadarśa ha ॥15-43-8॥
[शमीकं (śamīkam) - Śamīka (a proper noun); च (ca) - and; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; पुत्रं (putram) - son; तं (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; शृङ्गिणम् (śṛṅgiṇam) - Śṛṅgi (propr. noun, 'having a horn'); अमात्या (amātyāḥ) - the ministers; ये (ye) - who; बभूवुश्च (babhūvuśca) - and became (were); राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तांश्च (tāṁśca) - them also; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Śamīka and the great-souled son him and his Śṛṅgi; the ministers who became of the king, them also he saw indeed.)
He saw Śamīka and his great-souled son Śṛṅgi, and he also beheld the king's ministers who were there. (15-43-8)
ततः सोऽवभृथे राजा मुदितो जनमेजयः। पितरं स्नापयामास स्वयं सस्नौ च पार्थिवः ॥१५-४३-९॥
tataḥ so'vabhṛthe rājā mudito janamejayaḥ। pitaraṃ snāpayāmāsa svayaṃ sasnau ca pārthivaḥ ॥15-43-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; अवभृथे (avabhṛthe) - during the concluding bath (of a sacrifice); राजा (rājā) - the king; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - gladdened; जनमेजयः (janamejayaḥ) - Janamejaya (proper noun); पितरम् (pitaram) - father (accusative singular); स्नापयामास (snāpayāmāsa) - caused to bathe; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; सस्नौ (sasnau) - bathed; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
(Then he, at the avabhṛtha (final sacrificial bath), the king Janamejaya, gladdened, caused his father to bathe; himself also the king bathed.)
Then, at the time of the avabhṛtha (final sacrificial bath), the joyful king Janamejaya caused his father to bathe, and the king himself also bathed. (15-43-9)
स्नात्वा च भरतश्रेष्ठः सोऽऽस्तीकमिदमब्रवीत्। यायावरकुलोत्पन्नं जरत्कारुसुतं तदा ॥१५-४३-१०॥
snātvā ca bharataśreṣṭhaḥ so''stīkamidamabravīt. yāyāvarakulotpannaṃ jaratkārusutaṃ tadā ॥15-43-10॥
[स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; च (ca) - and; भरतश्रेष्ठः (bharataśreṣṭhaḥ) - O best of the Bharatas; सः (saḥ) - he; आस्तीकम् (āstīkam) - Āstīka; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; यायावरकुलोत्पन्नम् (yāyāvarakulotpannam) - born in the family of wandering ascetics; जरत्कारुसुतम् (jaratkārusutam) - son of Jaratkāru; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having bathed and, O best of the Bharatas, he said this to Āstīka, then, born in the family of wandering ascetics, son of Jaratkāru.)
Having bathed, O best of the Bharatas, he then said this to Āstīka, the son of Jaratkāru who was born in the family of wandering ascetics. (15-43-10)
आस्तीक विविधाश्चर्यो यज्ञोऽयमिति मे मतिः। यदद्यायं पिता प्राप्तो मम शोकप्रणाशनः ॥१५-४३-११॥
āstīka vividhāścaryo yajño'yamiti me matiḥ। yadadyāyaṃ pitā prāpto mama śokapraṇāśanaḥ ॥15-43-11॥
[आस्तीक (āstīka) - Āstīka (proper noun; name of sage); विविधाश्चर्यः (vividhāścaryaḥ) - of various wonders; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; यत् (yat) - that; अद्य (adya) - today; अयम् (ayam) - this; पिता (pitā) - father; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has come; मम (mama) - my; शोकप्रणाशनः (śokapraṇāśanaḥ) - remover of sorrow;]
(Āstīka of various wonders sacrifice this thus my thought; that today this father has come my sorrow-remover;)
My thought is that this sacrifice of various wonders belongs to Āstīka; for today this father who is my remover of sorrow has arrived. (15-43-11)
आस्तीक उवाच॥

Āstīka said.
ऋषिर्द्वैपायनो यत्र पुराणस्तपसो निधिः। यज्ञे कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ तस्य लोकावुभौ जितौ ॥१५-४३-१२॥
ṛṣir dvaipāyano yatra purāṇas tapaso nidhiḥ। yajñe kurukulaśreṣṭha tasya lokāv ubhau jitau ॥15-43-12॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; द्वैपायनः (dvaipāyanaḥ) - Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa, son of an island-dweller); यत्र (yatra) - where; पुराणः (purāṇaḥ) - ancient (sage); तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; निधिः (nidhiḥ) - treasure; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ (kurukulaśreṣṭha) - best of the Kuru lineage; तस्य (tasya) - his; लोकौ (lokau) - two worlds; उभौ (ubhau) - both; जितौ (jitau) - conquered;]
(Sage Dvaipāyana, where the ancient (sage), treasure of austerity, in the sacrifice, O best of the Kuru lineage, his two worlds both were conquered.)
Where the sage Dvaipāyana, the ancient treasure of austerity, was present at the sacrifice, O best of the Kuru lineage, both his worlds were conquered. (15-43-12)
श्रुतं विचित्रमाख्यानं त्वया पाण्डवनन्दन। सर्पाश्च भस्मसान्नीता गताश्च पदवीं पितुः ॥१५-४३-१३॥
śrutaṃ vicitramākhyānaṃ tvayā pāṇḍavanandana। sarpāś ca bhasmasānnītā gatāś ca padavīṃ pituḥ ॥15-43-13॥
[श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; विचित्रम् (vicitram) - wondrous; आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - narrative; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पाण्डवनन्दन (pāṇḍavanandana) - O joy of the Pāṇḍavas; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - the serpents; च (ca) - and; भस्मसात् (bhasmasāt) - to ashes; नीता (nītāḥ) - led; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; च (ca) - and; पदवीं (padavīm) - the path; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father;]
(Heard wondrous narrative by you, O joy of the Pāṇḍavas. The serpents and to ashes led, and have gone the path of the father.)
O joy of the Pāṇḍavas, you have heard the wondrous narrative. The serpents have been led to ashes and have gone to the path of their father. (15-43-13)
कथञ्चित्तक्षको मुक्तः सत्यत्वात्तव पार्थिव। ऋषयः पूजिताः सर्वे गतिं दृष्ट्वा महात्मनः ॥१५-४३-१४॥
kathaṃcit takṣakaḥ muktaḥ satyatvāt tava pārthiva। ṛṣayaḥ pūjitāḥ sarve gatiṃ dṛṣṭvā mahātmanaḥ ॥15-43-14॥
[कथञ्चित् (kathaṃcit) - somehow; तक्षकः (takṣakaḥ) - Takṣaka (proper noun, name of a serpent); मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - was released; सत्यत्वात् (satyatvāt) - due to truthfulness; तव (tava) - your; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; पूजिताः (pūjitāḥ) - were honored; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गतिम् (gatiṃ) - the path; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul (proper noun meaning);]
(Somehow Takṣaka was released due to truthfulness of you, O king. The sages all, having seen the path of the great soul, were honored.)
Somehow, O king, Takṣaka was set free by your truthfulness. All the sages, having witnessed the passing of the great soul, were honored. (15-43-14)
प्राप्तः सुविपुलो धर्मः श्रुत्वा पापविनाशनम्। विमुक्तो हृदयग्रन्थिरुदारजनदर्शनात् ॥१५-४३-१५॥
prāptaḥ suviphulo dharmaḥ śrutvā pāpavināśanam. vimukto hṛdayagranthirudārajanadarśanāt ||15-43-15||
[प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; सुविपुलः (suvipulaḥ) - very great; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - virtue; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पापविनाशनम् (pāpavināśanam) - destruction of sin; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - released; हृदयग्रन्थिः (hṛdayagranthiḥ) - the knot of the heart; उदारजनदर्शनात् (udārajanadarśanāt) - by seeing noble people;]
(Attained very great virtue, having heard the destruction of sin. Released is the knot of the heart by seeing noble people. (15-43-15))
By hearing that which destroys sin, one attains great virtue. The knot of the heart is released by the sight of noble people. (15-43-15)
ये च पक्षधरा धर्मे सद्वृत्तरुचयश्च ये। यान्दृष्ट्वा हीयते पापं तेभ्यः कार्या नमस्क्रियाः ॥१५-४३-१६॥
ye ca pakṣadharā dharme sadvṛttarucayaś ca ye। yān dṛṣṭvā hīyate pāpaṃ tebhyaḥ kāryā namaskriyāḥ ॥15-43-16॥
[ये (ye) - who; plural; च (ca) - and; पक्षधरा (pakṣadharā) - bearers of wings; birds; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; in righteousness; सद्वृत्तरुचयः (sadvṛttarucayaḥ) - those whose nature is good; those fond of virtuous conduct; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; यान् (yān) - whom; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; हीयते (hīyate) - is reduced; पापं (pāpaṃ) - sin; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - unto them; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; नमस्क्रियाः (namaskriyāḥ) - acts of obeisance; salutations;]
(Who and bearers of wings in righteousness and those whose nature is good, whom having seen sin is reduced, unto them acts of obeisance should be done.)
And those birds who are virtuous by nature and established in righteousness, upon seeing whom one's sin is lessened—to them acts of salutations should be offered. (15-43-16)
सूत उवाच॥

Sūta said;
एतच्छ्रुत्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठात्स राजा जनमेजयः। पूजयामास तमृषिमनुमान्य पुनः पुनः ॥१५-४३-१७॥
etac chrutvā dvijaśreṣṭhāts rājā janamejayaḥ। pūjayām āsa tam ṛṣim anumānya punaḥ punaḥ॥15-43-17॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (etat-śrutvā) - having heard this; द्विजश्रेष्ठात् (dvijaśreṣṭhāt) - from the best of the twice-born; स (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; जनमेजयः (janamejayaḥ) - Janamejaya; पूजयामास (pūjayām āsa) - honored; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; अनुमान्य (anumānya) - showing respect; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Having heard this from the best of the twice-born, he, King Janamejaya, honored that sage, repeatedly showing respect.)
King Janamejaya, after hearing this from the best of the twice-born, honored the sage again and again with due respect. (15-43-17)
पप्रच्छ तमृषिं चापि वैशम्पायनमच्युतम्। कथावशेषं धर्मज्ञो वनवासस्य सत्तम ॥१५-४३-१८॥
papraccha tam ṛṣiṁ cāpi vaiśampāyanam acyutam। kathāvaśeṣaṁ dharmajño vanavāsasya sattama ॥15-43-18॥
[पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṁ) - sage; चापि (cāpi) - and also; वैशम्पायनम् (vaiśampāyanam) - Vaiśampāyana; अच्युतम् (acyutam) - the infallible one; कथावशेषं (kathāvaśeṣam) - the remaining part of the story; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; वनवासस्य (vanavāsasya) - of the forest dwelling; सत्तम (sattama) - best among the virtuous;]
(Asked him, the sage, and also Vaiśampāyana, the infallible one, the remaining part of the story, the knower of dharma, of the forest dwelling, best among the virtuous.)
The best among the virtuous, knower of dharma, asked the sage Vaiśampāyana, the infallible one, about the remaining part of the story of the forest dwelling. (15-43-18)
