dṛṣṭvā putrāṃs tathā pautrān sānubandhāñ janādhipaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ kim akarod rājā caiva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥15-44-1॥

तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं पुत्राणां दर्शनं पुनः। वीतशोकः स राजर्षिः पुनराश्रममागमत् ॥१५-४४-२॥
tad dṛṣṭvā mahad-āścaryaṃ putrāṇāṃ darśanaṃ punaḥ। vītaśokaḥ sa rājarṣiḥ punar āśramam āgamat ॥15-44-2॥

(That having seen great wonder, of sons the sight again, free from sorrow, he royal sage again hermitage came.)
Having seen that great wonder—the sight of his sons again—the royal sage, free from sorrow, once more returned to the hermitage. (15-44-2)
इतरस्तु जनः सर्वस्ते चैव परमर्षयः। प्रतिजग्मुर्यथाकामं धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञया ॥१५-४४-३॥
itarastu janaḥ sarvaste caiva paramarṣayaḥ। pratijagmur yathākāmaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñayā ॥15-44-3॥
[इतरः (itaraḥ) - the other; other; तु (tu) - but; जनः (janaḥ) - people; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; परमर्षयः (paramarṣayaḥ) - the supreme sages; प्रतिजग्मुः (pratijagmuḥ) - departed (went back); यथा (yathā) - as; कामम् (kāmam) - wished (desire); धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; अभ्यनुज्ञया (abhyanujñayā) - with permission;]

पाण्डवास्तु महात्मानो लघुभूयिष्ठसैनिकाः। अनुजग्मुर्महात्मानं सदारं तं महीपतिम् ॥१५-४४-४॥

[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तु (tu) - but; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled; लघु-भूयिष्ठ-सैनिकाः (laghu-bhūyiṣṭha-sainikāḥ) - with a mostly small (limited) army; अनुजग्मुः (anujagmuḥ) - they followed; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; स-अारम् (sa-dāram) - with (his) wife; तम् (tam) - that; महीपतिम् (mahīpatim) - king;]
(But the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, with a mostly small army, followed that great-souled king with his wife.)
But the noble Pāṇḍavas, whose army was mostly small, followed that great-souled king along with his wife. (15-44-4)
तमाश्रमगतं धीमान्ब्रह्मर्षिर्लोकपूजितः। मुनिः सत्यवतीपुत्रो धृतराष्ट्रमभाषत ॥१५-४४-५॥
tam āśrama-gataṃ dhīmān brahmarṣir loka-pūjitaḥ। muniḥ satyavatī-putro dhṛtarāṣṭram abhāṣata ॥15-44-5॥

धृतराष्ट्र महाबाहो शृणु कौरवनन्दन। श्रुतं ते ज्ञानवृद्धानामृषीणां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥१५-४४-६॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho śṛṇu kauravanandana। śrutaṃ te jñānavṛddhānām ṛṣīṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām ॥15-44-6॥

O Dhṛtarāṣṭra, mighty-armed, listen, O delight of the Kauravas. What you have heard comes from the sages advanced in knowledge and meritorious deeds. (15-44-6)
ऋद्धाभिजनवृद्धानां वेदवेदाङ्गवेदिनाम्। धर्मज्ञानां पुराणानां वदतां विविधाः कथाः ॥१५-४४-७॥
ṛddhābhijanavṛddhānāṃ vedavedaṅgavedinām। dharmajñānāṃ purāṇānāṃ vadatāṃ vividhāḥ kathāḥ॥15-44-7॥
[ऋद्ध-अभिजन-वृद्धानाम् (ṛddha-abhijana-vṛddhānām) - of the prosperous, noble, and aged; वेद-वेदाङ्ग-वेदिनाम् (veda-vedaṅga-vedinām) - of knowers of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas; धर्म-ज्ञानाम् (dharma-jñānām) - of those who know dharma; पुराणानाम् (purāṇānām) - of the ancient ones; वदताम् (vadatām) - of speakers; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories;]
(Of the prosperous, noble, and aged; of knowers of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas; of those who know dharma; of the ancient ones; of speakers; various stories.)
There are various stories told by the prosperous, noble, and aged; by knowers of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas; by those who know dharma; by the ancient ones; and by speakers. (15-44-7)
मा स्म शोके मनः कार्षीर्दिष्टेन व्यथते बुधः। श्रुतं देवरहस्यं ते नारदाद्देवदर्शनात् ॥१५-४४-८॥
mā sma śoke manaḥ kārṣīr diṣṭena vyathate budhaḥ। śrutaṃ devarahasyaṃ te nāradād devadarśanāt॥15-44-8॥
[मा (mā) - do not; स्म (sma) - indeed; शोके (śoke) - in grief; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - you should make; दिष्टेन (diṣṭena) - by destiny; व्यथते (vyathate) - is distressed; बुधः (budhaḥ) - the wise (person); श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; देवरहस्यं (devarahasyaṃ) - the secret of the gods; ते (te) - to you; नारदात् (nāradāt) - from Nārada; देवदर्शनात् (devadarśanāt) - from the sight of the gods;]
(Do not indeed make (your) mind (placed) in grief; the wise (person) is not distressed by destiny. The secret of the gods, heard by you from Nārada, from sight of the gods.)
Do not let your mind be overcome with grief; the wise are not troubled by destiny. You have heard the secret of the gods from Nārada during the audience with the gods. (15-44-8)
गतास्ते क्षत्रधर्मेण शस्त्रपूतां गतिं शुभाम्। यथा दृष्टास्त्वया पुत्रा यथाकामविहारिणः ॥१५-४४-९॥
gatās te kṣatradharmeṇa śastrapūtāṁ gatiṁ śubhām। yathā dṛṣṭās tvayā putrā yathākāmavihāriṇaḥ ॥15-44-9॥
[गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; ते (te) - your; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmeṇa) - through the duty of kṣatriya; शस्त्रपूताम् (śastrapūtām) - purified by weapons; गतिम् (gatim) - state; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious; यथा (yathā) - as; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - were seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; यथाकामविहारिणः (yathākāmavihāriṇaḥ) - moving as they pleased;]
(Your sons have gone, by the duty of kṣatriya, to an auspicious state purified by weapons, as were seen by you, the sons, moving as they pleased.)
Your sons, by fulfilling the kṣatriya duty, have attained an auspicious state purified by weapons—just as you saw them, enjoying themselves as they wished. (15-44-9)
युधिष्ठिरस्त्वयं धीमान्भवन्तमनुरुध्यते। सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैः सदारः ससुहृज्जनः ॥१५-४४-१०॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tv ayaṁ dhīmān bhavantam anurudhyate। sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvaiḥ sadāraḥ sasuhr̥j-janaḥ ॥15-44-10॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; त्वं (tvam) - you; अयम् (ayam) - this; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - your Reverence; अनुरुध्यते (anurudhyate) - follows; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; सदारः (sadāraḥ) - with wife; ससुहृज्जनः (sasuhr̥j-janaḥ) - with friend-people;]
(Yudhishthira, this wise (one), follows your Reverence, accompanied by all brothers, with wife, with friend-people.)
Yudhishthira, this wise man, follows you, accompanied by all his brothers, with his wife and his friends. (15-44-10)
विसर्जयैनं यात्वेष स्वराज्यमनुशासताम्। मासः समधिको ह्येषामतीतो वसतां वने ॥१५-४४-११॥
visarjayainaṃ yātveṣa svarājyamanuśāsatām। māsaḥ samadhiko hyeṣāmatīto vasatāṃ vane ॥15-44-11॥
[विसर्जय (visarjaya) - send forth; dismiss; let go; release; एनं (enaṃ) - him; this one; यातु (yātu) - let him go; he may go; एष (eṣa) - this (one); he; स्वराज्यम् (svarājyam) - own kingdom; अनुशासताम् (anuśāsatām) - of those who rule; of rulers; मासः (māsaḥ) - month; समधिकः (samadhikaḥ) - completely exceeded; more than full; हि (hi) - indeed; truly; एषाम् (eṣām) - for these (ones); अतीतः (atītaḥ) - has passed; elapsed; वसताम् (vasatām) - of those dwelling; of those residing; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(Send forth him; let this one go to his own kingdom of the rulers. A month completely (indeed) for these has passed of dwelling in the forest.)
Dismiss him; let him return to the kingdom of the rulers. Indeed, more than a month has already passed while they have been residing in the forest. (15-44-11)
एतद्धि नित्यं यत्नेन पदं रक्ष्यं परन्तप। बहुप्रत्यर्थिकं ह्येतद्राज्यं नाम नराधिप ॥१५-४४-१२॥
etad dhi nityaṃ yatnena padaṃ rakṣyaṃ parantapa। bahupratyarthikaṃ hy etad rājyaṃ nāma narādhipa ॥15-44-12॥
[एतत् (etad) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; पदं (padaṃ) - position; रक्ष्यं (rakṣyaṃ) - to be protected; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; बहुप्रत्यर्थिकं (bahupratyarthikaṃ) - with many rivals; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etad) - this; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; नाम (nāma) - called; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(This indeed always with effort position to be protected, O scorcher of foes; with many rivals indeed this kingdom called, O ruler of men.)
O scorcher of foes, this position must always be protected with effort; this kingdom is indeed called with many rivals, O ruler of men. (15-44-12)
इत्युक्तः कौरवो राजा व्यासेनामितबुद्धिना। युधिष्ठिरमथाहूय वाग्मी वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१५-४४-१३॥

(Thus addressed, the Kaurava king by Vyāsa of immeasurable intellect, having then called Yudhiṣṭhira, the eloquent one spoke speech.)
Thus, having been addressed by Vyāsa of immeasurable intellect, the Kaurava king, after calling Yudhiṣṭhira, the eloquent one, spoke these words. (15-44-13)
अजातशत्रो भद्रं ते शृणु मे भ्रातृभिः सह। त्वत्प्रसादान्महीपाल शोको नास्मान्प्रबाधते ॥१५-४४-१४॥
ajātaśatro bhadraṃ te śṛṇu me bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। tvatprasādān mahīpāla śoko nāsmān prabādhate॥15-44-14॥
[अजातशत्रो (ajātaśatro) - O Ajātaśatru (he whose enemies are not born); भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - welfare; good fortune; ते (te) - to you; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मे (me) - my; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (my) brothers; सह (saha) - together; with; त्वत्प्रसादात् (tvatprasādāt) - by your favor; महीपाल (mahīpāla) - O king; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; न (na) - not; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; प्रबाधते (prabādhate) - distresses; oppresses;]
(O Ajātaśatru, welfare to you, hear (this) from me together with (my) brothers. O king, by your favor, grief does not distress us.)
O Ajātaśatru, blessings to you; listen to me along with my brothers. O king, it is by your grace that grief does not trouble us. (15-44-14)
रमे चाहं त्वया पुत्र पुरेव गजसाह्वये। नाथेनानुगतो विद्वन्प्रियेषु परिवर्तिना ॥१५-४४-१५॥
rame cāhaṁ tvayā putra pureva gajasāhvaye। nāthenānugato vidvanpriyeṣu parivartinā ॥15-44-15॥
[रमे (rame) - I was delighting; च (ca) - and; अहम् (ahaṁ) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; पुत्र (putra) - O son; पुरा (purā) - formerly; इव (iva) - as if; गजसाह्वये (gajasāhvaye) - in Gajasāhvaya (name of a place); नाथेन (nāthena) - with (my) lord; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - accompanied; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O wise one; प्रियेषु (priyeṣu) - among dear ones; परिवर्तिना (parivartinā) - by one who is changeful;]
(I was delighting and I, with you, O son, formerly as if in Gajasāhvaya, with (my) lord, accompanied, O wise one, among dear ones, by one who is changeful.)
O son, once before in Gajasāhvaya, I delighted with you, being accompanied by my lord—O wise one—among dear ones, by one whose affections change. (15-44-15)
प्राप्तं पुत्रफलं त्वत्तः प्रीतिर्मे विपुला त्वयि। न मे मन्युर्महाबाहो गम्यतां पुत्र मा चिरम् ॥१५-४४-१६॥
prāptaṃ putraphalaṃ tvattaḥ prītirme vipulā tvayi। na me manyur mahābāho gamyatāṃ putra mā ciram ॥15-44-16॥
[प्राप्तं (prāptam) - obtained; पुत्रफलं (putraphalam) - son-result; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; प्रीतिर्मे (prītir me) - affection my; विपुला (vipulā) - abundant; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O long-armed one; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let it go; पुत्र (putra) - O son; मा (mā) - do not; चिरम् (ciram) - long (delay);]
(Obtained son-result from you; affection my abundant in you. Not my anger, O long-armed one, let it go, O son, do not (delay) long.)
I have obtained the fruit of having a son from you; my affection for you is abundant. I have no anger, O long-armed one; go, O son, do not delay long. (15-44-16)
भवन्तं चेह सम्प्रेक्ष्य तपो मे परिहीयते। तपोयुक्तं शरीरं च त्वां दृष्ट्वा धारितं पुनः ॥१५-४४-१७॥
bhavantaṃ ceha samprekṣya tapo me parihīyate. tapoyuktaṃ śarīraṃ ca tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā dhāritaṃ punaḥ ॥15-44-17॥
[भवन्तम् (bhavantaṃ) - you (honorific, accusative singular); च (ca) - and; also; इह (iha) - here; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; after seeing; तपः (tapaḥ) - asceticism; penance; मे (me) - my; of me; परिहीयते (parihīyate) - is reduced; diminishes; तपःयुक्तम् (tapoyuktam) - endowed with asceticism; possessed of penance; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; च (ca) - and; also; त्वाम् (tvām) - you (accusative singular); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; धारितम् (dhāritam) - supported; upheld; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Having seen you here, my asceticism is diminished. And having seen you, endowed with asceticism, a body supported again.)
When I see you here, my penance diminishes. Yet, upon seeing you, with your body sustained by asceticism, it is supported again. (15-44-17)
मातरौ ते तथैवेमे शीर्णपर्णकृताशने। मम तुल्यव्रते पुत्र नचिरं वर्तयिष्यतः ॥१५-४४-१८॥
mātarau te tathaiva ime śīrṇaparṇakṛtāśane. mama tulyavrate putra naciraṃ vartayiṣyataḥ ॥15-44-18॥
[मातरौ (mātarau) - the two mothers; ते (te) - your; तथैव (tathaiva) - exactly in the same way; इमे (ime) - these two; शीर्णपर्णकृताशने (śīrṇaparṇakṛtāśane) - living on dried leaves as food; मम (mama) - my; तुल्यव्रते (tulyavrate) - having equal vow; पुत्र (putra) - son; नचिरं (naciraṃ) - not for long; वर्तयिष्यतः (vartayiṣyataḥ) - will continue to live;]
(Your two mothers, exactly in the same way, these two, living on dried leaves as food, with vow equal to mine, O son, will not continue for long.)
Your two mothers, O son, who are sustaining themselves on dried leaves in the same way and are practicing a vow equal to mine, will not survive for long. (15-44-18)
दुर्योधनप्रभृतयो दृष्टा लोकान्तरं गताः। व्यासस्य तपसो वीर्याद्भवतश्च समागमात् ॥१५-४४-१९॥
duryodhanaprabhṛtayo dṛṣṭā lokāntaraṃ gatāḥ। vyāsasya tapaso vīryādbhavataśca samāgamāt॥15-44-19॥
[दुर्योधनप्रभृतयः (duryodhanaprabhṛtayaḥ) - Duryodhana and others; all led by Duryodhana; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - were seen; लोकान्तरम् (lokāntaram) - other world; another realm; गताः (gatāḥ) - having gone; व्यासस्य (vyāsasya) - of Vyāsa; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; of penance; वीर्यात् (vīryāt) - by the potency; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - by your; च (ca) - and; समागमात् (samāgamāt) - by the meeting;]
(Duryodhana and others were seen having gone to another world, by the potency of Vyāsa's austerity and by your meeting.)
Duryodhana and his companions, who had departed to another world, were seen due to the power of Vyāsa's penance and your presence together. (15-44-19)
प्रयोजनं चिरं वृत्तं जीवितस्य च मेऽनघ। उग्रं तपः समास्थास्ये त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१५-४४-२०॥
prayojanaṁ ciraṁ vṛttaṁ jīvitasya ca me-'nagha। ugraṁ tapaḥ samāsthāsye tvam-anujñātum-arhasi ॥15-44-20॥
[प्रयोजनम् (prayojanam) - purpose; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - has ended; जीवितस्य (jīvitasya) - of life; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; अनघ (anagha) - O faultless one; उग्रम् (ugram) - severe; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; समास्थास्ये (samāsthāsye) - I shall undertake; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought;]
(Purpose for a long time has ended, of life and my, O faultless one. Severe austerity I shall undertake; you to permit ought.)
O faultless one, my purpose and the life have long been fulfilled. I shall undertake severe austerity; you ought to permit me. (15-44-20)
त्वय्यद्य पिण्डः कीर्तिश्च कुलं चेदं प्रतिष्ठितम्। श्वो वाद्य वा महाबाहो गम्यतां पुत्र मा चिरम् ॥१५-४४-२१॥
tvayyadya piṇḍaḥ kīrtiś ca kulaṃ cedaṃ pratiṣṭhitam। śvo vā adya vā mahābāho gamyatāṃ putra mā ciram॥15-44-21॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; अद्य (adya) - today; पिण्डः (piṇḍaḥ) - offspring; seed; family line; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established; श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; वा (vā) - or; अद्य (adya) - today; वा (vā) - or; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (it) be gone; let (you) go; पुत्र (putra) - son; मा (mā) - do not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay; linger;]
(In you today, offspring and fame and this family are established. Tomorrow or today, O mighty-armed son, let it be gone—do not delay.)
Today, in you, offspring, fame, and this family are established. O mighty-armed son, let it be accomplished either today or tomorrow—do not delay. (15-44-21)
राजनीतिः सुबहुशः श्रुता ते भरतर्षभ। संदेष्टव्यं न पश्यामि कृतमेतावता विभो ॥१५-४४-२२॥
rājanītiḥ subahuśaḥ śrutā te bharatarṣabha। sandeṣṭavyaṁ na paśyāmi kṛtam etāvatā vibho ॥15-44-22॥
[राजनीतिः (rājanītiḥ) - political science; सुबहुशः (subahuśaḥ) - many times; श्रुता (śrutā) - (is) heard; ते (te) - by you; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; संदेष्टव्यं (sandeṣṭavyam) - what is to be ordered; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; एतावता (etāvatā) - by this much; विभो (vibho) - O master;]
(Political science many times (is) heard by you, O best of the Bharatas; (what is) to be ordered not I see done by this much, O master.)
O best of the Bharatas, you have heard political science many times, O master, but I do not see that what ought to be commanded has been accomplished by this alone. (15-44-22)
इत्युक्तवचनं तात नृपो राजानमब्रवीत्। न मामर्हसि धर्मज्ञ परित्यक्तुमनागसम् ॥१५-४४-२३॥
ity-ukta-vacanaṃ tāta nṛpo rājānam abravīt। na mām arhasi dharma-jña parityaktum anāgasam ॥15-44-23॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवचनम् (ukta-vacanam) - spoken words; तात (tāta) - dear one; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king (accusative); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; अर्हसि (arhasi) - should; धर्मज्ञ (dharma-jña) - knower of dharma; परित्यक्तुम् (parityaktum) - to abandon; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - blameless;]
(Thus, having spoken words, dear one, the king spoke to the king. O knower of dharma, you should not abandon me, blameless.)
Thus, having said these words, the king spoke to the king: "O knower of dharma, you ought not to abandon me who am blameless." (15-44-23)
कामं गच्छन्तु मे सर्वे भ्रातरोऽनुचरास्तथा। भवन्तमहमन्विष्ये मातरौ च यतव्रते ॥१५-४४-२४॥
kāmaṃ gacchantu me sarve bhrātaro'­nucarās­tathā। bhavantam­aham­anviṣye mātarau ca yatavrate ॥15-44-24॥
[कामं (kāmaṃ) - as they wish; गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - let go; मे (me) - my; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; अनुचराः (anucarāḥ) - attendants; तथा (tathā) - also; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you (honorific); अहम् (aham) - I; अन्विष्ये (anviṣye) - will seek; मातरौ (mātarau) - the two mothers; च (ca) - and; यतव्रते (yatavrate) - O resolute in vow;]
(As they wish, let all my brothers and attendants also go. You, I will seek, as well as the two mothers, O resolute in vow.)
Let all my brothers and attendants go as they wish. As for you, O resolute in vow, I will seek you and the two mothers. (15-44-24)
तमुवाचाथ गान्धारी मैवं पुत्र शृणुष्व मे। त्वय्यधीनं कुरुकुलं पिण्डश्च श्वशुरस्य मे ॥१५-४४-२५॥
tam uvāca atha gāndhārī ma evaṃ putra śṛṇuṣva me। tvayy adhīnaṃ kurukulaṃ piṇḍaś ca śvaśurasya me॥15-44-25॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; मा (mā) - not; एवम् (evam) - thus; पुत्र (putra) - son; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - hear; मे (me) - to me; त्वय्यधीनं (tvayy adhīnam) - dependent on you; कुरुकुलं (kurukulam) - Kuru family; पिण्डश्च (piṇḍaś ca) - and the ancestral offering; श्वशुरस्य (śvaśurasya) - of my father-in-law; मे (me) - to me;]
(Then Gāndhārī said to him: "Do not (speak) thus, son, hear me; on you depends the Kuru family and the ancestral offering of my father-in-law to me.")
Then Gāndhārī said to him: "Do not speak thus, my son, listen to me; the Kuru family and the ancestral offerings of my father-in-law depend upon you." (15-44-25)
गम्यतां पुत्र पर्याप्तमेतावत्पूजिता वयम्। राजा यदाह तत्कार्यं त्वया पुत्र पितुर्वचः ॥१५-४४-२६॥
gamyatāṃ putra paryāptametāvatpūjitā vayam। rājā yadāha tatkāryaṃ tvayā putra piturvacaḥ ॥15-44-26॥
[गम्यतां (gamyatām) - let it be gone; let (you) go; (imperative) go; पुत्र (putra) - son; पर्याप्तम् (paryāptam) - sufficient; enough; एतावत् (etāvat) - this much; to this extent; पूजिता (pūjitā) - been honored; respected; वयम् (vayam) - we; राजा (rājā) - the king; यद् (yad) - what; which; आह (āha) - has said; said; तत् (tat) - that; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - to be done; should be done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुत्र (putra) - son; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; father's; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; command;]
(Let it be gone, son; sufficient is this much, we have been honored. That which the king has said, that should be done by you, son—the father's word.)
Go now, son; this much is sufficient, we have been respected enough. What the king has said, that you must do, son—that is your father's command. (15-44-26)
इत्युक्तः स तु गान्धार्या कुन्तीमिदमुवाच ह। स्नेहबाष्पाकुले नेत्रे प्रमृज्य रुदतीं वचः ॥१५-४४-२७॥
ity-uktaḥ sa tu gāndhāryā kuntīm idam uvāca ha। sneha-bāṣpa-akule netre pramṛjya rudatīṃ vacaḥ ॥15-44-27॥

(Thus having been addressed, he indeed by Gāndhārī, to Kuntī this said; with eyes filled with loving tears, having wiped away, to the weeping (woman), (he spoke) words.)
Having thus been addressed by Gāndhārī, he spoke these words to Kuntī, having wiped his eyes filled with loving tears, to the weeping (woman). (15-44-27)
विसर्जयति मां राजा गान्धारी च यशस्विनी। भवत्यां बद्धचित्तस्तु कथं यास्यामि दुःखितः ॥१५-४४-२८॥
visarjayati māṃ rājā gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī। bhavatyāṃ baddhacittas tu kathaṃ yāsyāmi duḥkhitaḥ॥15-44-28॥
[विसर्जयति (visarjayati) - releases; माम् (mām) - me; राजा (rājā) - the king; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious; भवत्याम् (bhavatyām) - in you; बद्धचित्तः (baddhacittaḥ) - whose mind is bound; तु (tu) - but; कथम् (katham) - how; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - will I go; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - suffering;]
(The king releases me and Gāndhārī, the illustrious; but with my mind bound in you, how, suffering, will I go?)
The king and the illustrious Gāndhārī have released me; but with my mind bound to you, how can I, suffering, depart? (15-44-28)
न चोत्सहे तपोविघ्नं कर्तुं ते धर्मचारिणि। तपसो हि परं नास्ति तपसा विन्दते महत् ॥१५-४४-२९॥
na cot-sahe tapo-vighnaṃ kartuṃ te dharma-cāriṇi। tapaso hi paraṃ nāsti tapasā vindate mahat॥15-44-29॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उत्सहे (utsaḥe) - I am able; तपः-विघ्नं (tapaḥ-vighnam) - obstacle to austerity; कर्तुं (kartum) - to do; ते (te) - to you; धर्मचारिणि (dharma-cāriṇi) - O follower of dharma; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; हि (hi) - indeed; परं (param) - higher; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - exists; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; महत् (mahat) - great; ॥१५-४४-२९॥ (॥15-44-29॥) - ;]
(And not am I able to do an obstacle to austerity to you, O follower of dharma; for of austerity indeed higher does not exist; by austerity one obtains great.)
O follower of dharma, I am not able to cause any hindrance to your austerity; for nothing is higher than austerity—by austerity, one attains greatness. (15-44-29)
ममापि न तथा राज्ञि राज्ये बुद्धिर्यथा पुरा। तपस्येवानुरक्तं मे मनः सर्वात्मना तथा ॥१५-४४-३०॥
mamāpi na tathā rājñi rājye buddhiryathā purā। tapasyēvānuraktaṁ me manaḥ sarvātmana tathā॥15-44-30॥
[ममापि (mama api) - my also; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O queen; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; बुद्धि (buddhiḥ) - mind; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - before; तपस्ये (tapasyē) - to penance; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुरक्तं (anuraktaṁ) - attached; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmana) - with all (my) soul; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Also my mind, O queen, is not so on the kingdom as before; to penance indeed, my mind is attached with all my soul so.)
O queen, my mind is no longer set on the kingdom as before; rather, my whole soul is entirely attached to penance. (15-44-30)
शून्येयं च मही सर्वा न मे प्रीतिकरी शुभे। बान्धवा नः परिक्षीणा बलं नो न यथा पुरा ॥१५-४४-३१॥
śūnyeyaṃ ca mahī sarvā na me prītikarī śubhe। bāndhavā naḥ parikṣīṇā balaṃ no na yathā purā ॥15-44-31॥
[शून्या (śūnyā) - empty; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; मही (mahī) - earth; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; न (na) - not; मे (me) - for me; प्रीतिकरी (prītikarī) - delight-giving; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; नः (naḥ) - our; परिक्षीणाः (parikṣīṇāḥ) - diminished; बलम् (balam) - strength; नः (no) - our; न (na) - not; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Empty this and earth all, not for me delight-giving, O auspicious one. Relatives our are diminished, strength our not as formerly.)
This whole earth feels empty and does not give me delight, O auspicious one. Our relatives are diminished and our strength is not as it was before. (15-44-31)
पाञ्चालाः सुभृशं क्षीणाः कन्यामात्रावशेषिताः। न तेषां कुलकर्तारं कञ्चित्पश्याम्यहं शुभे ॥१५-४४-३२॥
pāñcālāḥ subhṛśaṃ kṣīṇāḥ kanyāmātrāvaśeṣitāḥ। na teṣāṃ kulakartāraṃ kañcit paśyāmy ahaṃ śubhe ॥15-44-32॥
[पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Pāñcālas; सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - very much; क्षीणाः (kṣīṇāḥ) - diminished; कन्यामात्रा (kanyāmātrā) - only (the) girl; अवशेषिताः (avaśeṣitāḥ) - left; न (na) - not; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; कुलकर्तारम् (kulakartāram) - maker of lineage; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - any; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; अहम् (aham) - I; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
(The Pāñcālas very much diminished only the girl left not of them maker of lineage any I see I O auspicious one.)
O auspicious one, I see that the Pāñcālas are greatly diminished, with only a girl remaining; I do not see any maker of lineage among them. (15-44-32)
सर्वे हि भस्मसान्नीता द्रोणेनैकेन संयुगे। अवशेषास्तु निहता द्रोणपुत्रेण वै निशि ॥१५-४४-३३॥
sarve hi bhasmasān nītā droṇenaikena saṃyuge। avaśeṣās tu nihatā droṇaputreṇa vai niśi ॥15-44-33॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; भस्मसान्नीता (bhasmasān nītāḥ) - to ashes led; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; एकेन (ekena) - alone; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; अवशेषाः (avaśeṣāḥ) - the remaining ones; तु (tu) - but; निहता (nihatāḥ) - slain; द्रोणपुत्रेण (droṇaputreṇa) - by Droṇa's son; वै (vai) - certainly; निशि (niśi) - at night;]
(All indeed to ashes were led by Droṇa alone in battle; but the remaining ones were slain by Droṇa's son certainly at night.)
All were indeed reduced to ashes in battle by Droṇa alone; but those who remained were certainly slain at night by Droṇa's son. (15-44-33)
चेदयश्चैव मत्स्याश्च दृष्टपूर्वास्तथैव नः। केवलं वृष्णिचक्रं तु वासुदेवपरिग्रहात् ॥ यं दृष्ट्वा स्थातुमिच्छामि धर्मार्थं नान्यहेतुकम् ॥१५-४४-३४॥
cedayaś caiva matsyāś ca dṛṣṭapūrvās tathaiva naḥ। kevalaṃ vṛṣṇicakraṃ tu vāsudevaparigrahāt॥ yaṃ dṛṣṭvā sthātum icchāmi dharmārthaṃ nānyahetukam॥15-44-34॥
[चेदयः (cedayaḥ) - the Chedis; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - the Matsyas; च (ca) - and; दृष्टपूर्वाः (dṛṣṭapūrvāḥ) - seen previously; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; नः (naḥ) - by us; केवलं (kevalaṃ) - only; वृष्णिचक्रम् (vṛṣṇicakram) - the Vṛṣṇi clan; तु (tu) - but; वासुदेवपरिग्रहात् (vāsudevaparigrahāt) - because of the association with Vāsudeva; यं (yaṃ) - whom; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; धर्मार्थम् (dharmārtham) - for the sake of dharma; न (na) - not; अन्यहेतुकम् (anyahetukam) - for another reason;]
(The Chedis and indeed the Matsyas, who have been seen previously by us; only the Vṛṣṇi clan, however, because of association with Vāsudeva; whom having seen I wish to stand for the sake of dharma, not for another reason. (15-44-34))
Both the Chedis and the Matsyas are already familiar to us; only the Vṛṣṇi clan, through their alliance with Vāsudeva, is different—seeing whom, I wish to stand (fight) for the sake of dharma, and for no other reason. (15-44-34)
शिवेन पश्य नः सर्वान्दुर्लभं दर्शनं तव। भविष्यत्यम्ब राजा हि तीव्रमारप्स्यते तपः ॥१५-४४-३५॥
śivena paśya naḥ sarvān-durlabhaṃ darśanaṃ tava। bhaviṣyaty amba rājā hi tīvram ārapsyate tapaḥ॥15-44-35॥
[शिवेन (śivena) - by auspiciousness; पश्य (paśya) - see; नः (naḥ) - for us; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (of us); दुर्लभं (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; दर्शनं (darśanam) - sight; तव (tava) - your; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen; अम्ब (amba) - O mother; राजा (rājā) - the king; हि (hi) - indeed; तीव्रम् (tīvram) - intense; आरप्स्यते (ārapsyate) - will undertake; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]
(By auspiciousness, see for us all your sight, difficult to obtain. O mother, the king indeed will undertake intense austerity.)

एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाबाहुः सहदेवो युधां पतिः। युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः ॥१५-४४-३६॥
etat śrutvā mahābāhuḥ sahadevo yudhāṃ patiḥ। yudhiṣṭhiram uvācedaṃ bāṣpa-vyākula-locanaḥ ॥15-44-36॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; युधां (yudhāṃ) - of battles; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः (bāṣpa-vyākula-locanaḥ) - with eyes filled with tears;]
(This having heard, the mighty-armed Sahadeva, lord of battles, to Yudhishthira said this with eyes filled with tears.)
Having heard this, the mighty-armed Sahadeva, lord of battles, with eyes full of tears, said this to Yudhishthira. (15-44-36)
नोत्सहेऽहं परित्यक्तुं मातरं पार्थिवर्षभ। प्रतियातु भवान्क्षिप्रं तपस्तप्स्याम्यहं वने ॥१५-४४-३७॥
notsahe'haṁ parityaktuṁ mātaraṁ pārthivarṣabha. pratiyātu bhavānkṣipraṁ tapastapsyāmyahaṁ vane ||15-44-37||

(Not am I able to abandon mother, O best of kings. Let you return quickly; austerity I shall perform in the forest.)
O best of kings, I am not able to abandon my mother. Please return quickly; I shall perform austerities in the forest. (15-44-37)
इहैव शोषयिष्यामि तपसाहं कलेवरम्। पादशुश्रूषणे युक्तो राज्ञो मात्रोस्तथानयोः ॥१५-४४-३८॥
ihaiva śoṣayiṣyāmi tapasā haṁ kalevaram। pādaśuśrūṣaṇe yukto rājño mātror tathānayoḥ ॥15-44-38॥
[इहैव (ihaiva) - here itself; शोषयिष्यामि (śoṣayiṣyāmi) - I shall dry up; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; पादशुश्रूषणे (pādaśuśrūṣaṇe) - in service to the feet; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; मातरोः (mātror) - of both mothers; तथा (tathā) - and; अनयोः (anayoḥ) - of these two;]
(Here itself I shall dry up the body by austerity I engaged in service to the feet of the king and both mothers;)
Here itself, I shall dry up my body with austerity, engaged in serving the feet of the king and both mothers. (15-44-38)
तमुवाच ततः कुन्ती परिष्वज्य महाभुजम्। गम्यतां पुत्र मैव त्वं वोचः कुरु वचो मम ॥१५-४४-३९॥

(Him said then Kunti, embracing the mighty-armed: Let him go, son, do not you say, do my word.)
Then Kunti, embracing the mighty-armed, said to him: "Go, son. But do not speak; do my bidding." (15-44-39)
आगमा वः शिवाः सन्तु स्वस्था भवत पुत्रकाः। उपरोधो भवेदेवमस्माकं तपसः कृते ॥१५-४४-४०॥
āgamā vaḥ śivāḥ santu svasthā bhavata putrakāḥ। uparodho bhaved evam asmākaṃ tapasaḥ kṛte॥15-44-40॥

(Let your comings be auspicious, let you, children, be well. Thus, obstruction may occur for our penance.)
May your arrivals be auspicious, and may you, children, remain well. Otherwise, our penance may thus be hindered. (15-44-40)
त्वत्स्नेहपाशबद्धा च हीयेयं तपसः परात्। तस्मात्पुत्रक गच्छ त्वं शिष्टमल्पं हि नः प्रभो ॥१५-४४-४१॥
tvatsneha-pāśa-baddhā ca hīyeyam tapasaḥ parāt। tasmāt putraka gaccha tvaṃ śiṣṭam alpaṃ hi naḥ prabho ॥15-44-41॥
[त्वत्स्नेहपाशबद्धा (tvatsneha-pāśa-baddhā) - bound by the cord of your affection; च (ca) - and; हीये (hīye) - is diminished; इयं (iyam) - this (person); तपसः (tapasaḥ) - from austerity; परात् (parāt) - excellence; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पुत्रक (putraka) - O child; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शिष्टम् (śiṣṭam) - that which remains; अल्पम् (alpaṃ) - little; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; प्रभो (prabho) - O master;]
(Bound by the cord of your affection and this (person) is diminished from the excellence of austerity; therefore, O child, go, you, that little which remains indeed, our O master.)
This person, bound by the tie of your affection, is losing the excellence of austerity; therefore, O child, go and complete the little that remains for us, O master. (15-44-41)
एवं संस्तम्भितं वाक्यैः कुन्त्या बहुविधैर्मनः। सहदेवस्य राजेन्द्र राज्ञश्चैव विशेषतः ॥१५-४४-४२॥
evaṃ saṃstambhitaṃ vākyaiḥ kunt­yā bahuvidhair manaḥ। sahadevasya rājendra rājñaścaiva viśeṣataḥ ॥15-44-42॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; संस्तम्भितं (saṃstambhitaṃ) - restrained; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - by statements; कुन्त्या (kunt­yā) - by Kuntī; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - of many kinds; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; सहदेवस्य (sahadevasya) - of Sahadeva; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Thus restrained by statements by Kuntī of many kinds, the mind of Sahadeva, O king, and indeed especially of the king.)
O king, thus by many kinds of statements of Kuntī, the mind of Sahadeva and especially of the king were restrained. (15-44-42)
ते मात्रा समनुज्ञाता राज्ञा च कुरुपुङ्गवाः। अभिवाद्य कुरुश्रेष्ठमामन्त्रयितुमारभन् ॥१५-४४-४३॥
te mātrā samanujñātā rājñā ca kurupuṅgavāḥ। abhivādya kuruśreṣṭham āmantrayitum ārabhan ॥15-44-43॥
[ते (te) - they; मात्रा (mātrā) - by the mother; समनुज्ञाता (samanujñātāḥ) - having been permitted; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; च (ca) - and; कुरुपुङ्गवाः (kurupuṅgavāḥ) - best of the Kurus; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having bowed respectfully; कुरुश्रेष्ठम् (kuruśreṣṭham) - to the foremost of the Kurus; आमन्त्रयितुम् (āmantrayitum) - to address (formally); आरभन् (ārabhan) - they began;]
(They, having been permitted by the mother and the king, the best of the Kurus, having bowed respectfully to the foremost of the Kurus, began to address (him).)
Those best of the Kurus, having obtained permission from both the mother and the king, respectfully bowed to the foremost of the Kurus and began to speak to him. (15-44-43)
राजन्प्रतिगमिष्यामः शिवेन प्रतिनन्दिताः। अनुज्ञातास्त्वया राजन्गमिष्यामो विकल्मषाः ॥१५-४४-४४॥
rājan pratigamiṣyāmaḥ śivena pratinanditāḥ. anujñātās tvayā rājan gamiṣyāmo vikalmaṣāḥ ॥15-44-44॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O King; प्रतिगमिष्यामः (pratigamiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall return; शिवेन (śivena) - by Śiva (the auspicious one); प्रतिनन्दिताः (pratinanditāḥ) - greeted; अनुज्ञाताः (anujñātāḥ) - permitted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O King; गमिष्यामः (gamiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall proceed; विकल्मषाः (vikalmaṣāḥ) - free from sin;]
(O King, we shall return, greeted by Śiva. Permitted by you, O King, we shall proceed free from sin.)
O King, having been greeted by Śiva, we will return; and, permitted by you, O King, we shall proceed free from sin. (15-44-44)
एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिर्धर्मराज्ञा महात्मना। अनुजज्ञे जयाशीर्भिरभिनन्द्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१५-४४-४५॥
evam uktaḥ sa rājarṣir dharmarājñā mahātmanā। anujajñe jayāśīrbhir abhinandya yudhiṣṭhiram ॥15-44-45॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; somuch; in this way; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; having been spoken; स (sa) - he; राजर्षि (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; धर्मराज्ञा (dharmarājñā) - by Dharmarāja; by the king who is dharma; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the high-souled; by the great-souled; अनुजज्ञे (anujajñe) - assented; accepted; approved; जयाशीर्भिः (jayāśīrbhiḥ) - with blessings for victory; by words wishing victory; अभिनन्द्य (abhinandya) - having congratulated; after having praised; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(Thus having been addressed, he, the royal sage, by Dharmarāja, the great-souled, assented, having blessed for victory, after congratulating Yudhishthira.)
Having thus been addressed by Dharmarāja, the great-souled royal sage consented, blessing Yudhishthira for victory after congratulating him. (15-44-45)
भीमं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठं सान्त्वयामास पार्थिवः। स चास्य सम्यङ्मेधावी प्रत्यपद्यत वीर्यवान् ॥१५-४४-४६॥
bhīmaṁ ca balināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ sāntvayāmāsa pārthivaḥ। sa cāsya samyaṅmedhāvī pratyapadyata vīryavān ॥15-44-46॥
[भीमं (bhīmaṁ) - Bhīma (the name); च (ca) - and; बलिनां (balināṁ) - of the powerful; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭhaṁ) - the best; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - consoled; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - to him; सम्यक् (samyaṅ) - properly; मेधावी (medhāvī) - one possessing intelligence; प्रत्यपद्यत (pratyapadyata) - accepted; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the mighty;]
(Bhīma and of the powerful the best, the king consoled. He and to him properly the intelligent, accepted, the mighty.)
The king consoled Bhīma, the foremost among the powerful. And the mighty, intelligent one properly accepted what he said. (15-44-46)
अर्जुनं च समाश्लिष्य यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ। अनुजज्ञे स कौरव्यः परिष्वज्याभिनन्द्य च ॥१५-४४-४७॥
arjunaṁ ca samāśliṣya yamau ca puruṣarṣabhau। anujajñe sa kauravyaḥ pariṣvajyābhinandya ca ॥15-44-47॥
[अर्जुनं (arjunaṁ) - Arjuna (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; समाश्लिष्य (samāśliṣya) - having embraced; yamौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (accusative dual) [refers to Nakula and Sahadeva]; च (ca) - and; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - bulls among men (accusative dual); अनुजज्ञे (anujajñe) - he permitted (past perfect tense); स (sa) - he; कौरव्यः (kauravyaḥ) - the Kaurava (i.e., Yudhishthira, nominative singular); परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; अभिनन्द्य (abhinandya) - having congratulated; च (ca) - and;]
(Arjuna and having embraced, the two sons of Yama and bulls among men, having permitted, he the Kaurava, having embraced, having congratulated and.)
The Kaurava, having warmly embraced Arjuna and also the two sons of Yama, the illustrious bulls among men, after embracing and congratulating them, gave his permission. (15-44-47)
गान्धार्या चाभ्यनुज्ञाताः कृतपादाभिवन्दनाः। जनन्या समुपाघ्राताः परिष्वक्ताश्च ते नृपम् ॥ चक्रुः प्रदक्षिणं सर्वे वत्सा इव निवारणे ॥१५-४४-४८॥
gāndhāryā cābhyanujñātāḥ kṛtapādābhivandanāḥ। jananyā samupāghrātāḥ pariṣvaktāś ca te nṛpam॥ cakruḥ pradakṣiṇaṃ sarve vatsā iva nivāraṇe॥15-44-48॥
[गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - by Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; अभ्यनुज्ञाताः (abhyanujñātāḥ) - having been permitted; कृतपादाभिवन्दनाः (kṛtapādābhivandanāḥ) - having paid respects to the feet; जनन्या (jananyā) - by their mother; समुपाघ्राताः (samupāghrātāḥ) - having been smelled (as a blessing); परिष्वक्ताः (pariṣvaktāḥ) - having been embraced; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; नृपम् (nṛpam) - the king; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वत्सा (vatsā) - calves; इव (iva) - like; निवारणे (nivāraṇe) - during weaning (separation);]
(By Gāndhārī and having been permitted, having paid respects to the feet; by their mother, having been smelled, having been embraced and they, the king; they made the circumambulation all, like calves during weaning.)
Permitted by Gāndhārī, having bowed to her feet, and after their mother had blessed and embraced them, they all circumambulated the king, like calves do at the time of weaning. (15-44-48)
पुनः पुनर्निरीक्षन्तः प्रजग्मुस्ते प्रदक्षिणम्। तथैव द्रौपदी साध्वी सर्वाः कौरवयोषितः ॥१५-४४-४९॥
punaḥ punar-nirīkṣantaḥ prajagmuste pradakṣiṇam। tathaiva draupadī sādhvī sarvāḥ kauravayoṣitaḥ ॥15-44-49॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; निरीक्षन्तः (nirīkṣantaḥ) - looking at; प्रजग्मुः (prajagmuḥ) - they went; ते (te) - they; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; तथा एव (tathā eva) - in the same manner; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; कौरवयोषितः (kauravayoṣitaḥ) - Kaurava women;]
(Again and again looking, they went to the circumambulation. In the same manner virtuous Draupadī and all the Kaurava women (did so).)
They kept looking back repeatedly as they went around in circumambulation. Likewise, virtuous Draupadī and all the Kaurava women did the same. (15-44-49)
न्यायतः श्वशुरे वृत्तिं प्रयुज्य प्रययुस्ततः। श्वश्रूभ्यां समनुज्ञाताः परिष्वज्याभिनन्दिताः ॥ संदिष्टाश्चेतिकर्तव्यं प्रययुर्भर्तृभिः सह ॥१५-४४-५०॥
nyāyataḥ śvaśure vṛttiṃ prayujya prayayus tataḥ । śvaśrūbhyāṃ samanugñātāḥ pariṣvajyābhinanditāḥ ॥ sandiṣṭāś ceti kartavyaṃ prayayuḥ bhartṛbhiḥ saha ॥15-44-50॥
[न्यायतः (nyāyataḥ) - rightly; justly; श्वशुरे (śvaśure) - to the father-in-law; वृत्तिं (vṛttiṃ) - conduct; duty; प्रयुज्य (prayujya) - having performed; प्रययुस्ततः (prayayus tataḥ) - departed then; श्वश्रूभ्यां (śvaśrūbhyāṃ) - by the two mothers-in-law; समनुज्ञाताः (samanugñātāḥ) - having been permitted; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; अभिनन्दिताः (abhinanditāḥ) - having been blessed; संदिष्टाः च (sandiṣṭāḥ ca) - instructed and; एति कर्तव्यं (eti kartavyaṃ) - the duty to return; प्रययु: (prayayuh) - they departed; भर्तृभिः सह (bhartṛbhiḥ saha) - with their husbands;]
(Rightly to the father-in-law conduct having performed, they departed then; by the two mothers-in-law having been permitted, having embraced, having been blessed; being instructed also in the duty of return, they went with their husbands. (15-44-50))
Having rightly served their father-in-law, they then departed; granted permission, embraced, and blessed by the two mothers-in-law, and instructed about the duty to return, they went together with their husbands. (15-44-50)
ततः प्रजज्ञे निनदः सूतानां युज्यतामिति। उष्ट्राणां क्रोशतां चैव हयानां हेषतामपि ॥१५-४४-५१॥
tataḥ prajajñe ninadaḥ sūtānāṃ yujyatāmiti। uṣṭrāṇāṃ krośatāṃ caiva hayānāṃ heṣatām api ॥15-44-51॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रजज्ञे (prajajñe) - arose; निनदः (ninadaḥ) - sound; सूतानाम् (sūtānām) - of charioteers; युज्यताम् (yujyatām) - let be yoked; इति (iti) - thus; उष्ट्राणाम् (uṣṭrāṇām) - of camels; क्रोशताम् (krośatām) - neighing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of horses; हेषताम् (heṣatām) - neighing; अपि (api) - also;]
(Then arose the sound of charioteers, "let (them) be yoked"; of camels neighing and indeed also of horses neighing.)
Then the sound arose from the charioteers, crying, "Let (the chariots) be yoked," together with the camels' neighing and the neighing of horses as well. (15-44-51)
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा सदारः सहसैनिकः। नगरं हास्तिनपुरं पुनरायात्सबान्धवः ॥१५-४४-५२॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā sadāraḥ sahasainikaḥ। nagaraṃ hāstinapuraṃ punarāyātsabāndhavaḥ ॥15-44-52॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; राजा (rājā) - king; सदारः (sadāraḥ) - with wife; सहसैनिकः (sahasainikaḥ) - together with army; नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; हास्तिनपुरम् (hāstinapuraṃ) - Hastinapura; पुनः (punar) - again; आयात् (āyāt) - came; सबंधवः (sabāndhavaḥ) - with relatives;]
(Then Yudhishthira the king, with wife, together with army, city Hastinapura, again came, with relatives.)
Then King Yudhishthira, with his wife, together with his army and relatives, returned again to the city of Hastinapura. (15-44-52)
