द्विवर्षोपनिवृत्तेषु पाण्डवेषु यदृच्छया। देवर्षिर्नारदो राजन्नाजगाम युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१५-४५-१॥
dvivarṣopanivṛtteṣu pāṇḍaveṣu yadṛcchayā। devarṣir nārado rājann ājagāma yudhiṣṭhiram ॥15-45-1॥

तमभ्यर्च्य महाबाहुः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। आसीनं परिविश्वस्तं प्रोवाच वदतां वरः ॥१५-४५-२॥
tam abhyarcya mahābāhuḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। āsīnaṃ pariviśvastaṃ provāca vadatāṃ varaḥ ॥15-45-2॥

चिरस्य खलु पश्यामि भगवन्तमुपस्थितम्। कच्चित्ते कुशलं विप्र शुभं वा प्रत्युपस्थितम् ॥१५-४५-३॥
cirasya khalu paśyāmi bhagavantam-upasthitam। kaccit-te kuśalaṃ vipra śubhaṃ vā pratyupasthitam ॥15-45-3॥

(After a long time, indeed, I see the venerable one who has come. Surely, to you, has welfare, O brāhmaṇa, or auspiciousness occurred?)
Indeed, after a long time I see that the venerable one has arrived. O brāhmaṇa, I hope welfare or auspicious fortune has come to you. (15-45-3)
के देशाः परिदृष्टास्ते किं च कार्यं करोमि ते। तद्ब्रूहि द्विजमुख्य त्वमस्माकं च प्रियोऽतिथिः ॥१५-४५-४॥
ke deśāḥ paridṛṣṭās te kiṁ ca kāryaṁ karomi te। tad brūhi dvija-mukhya tvam asmākaṁ ca priyo'tithiḥ ॥15-45-4॥

(Which regions have been observed by you? And what task shall I do for you? That tell, O foremost of twice-born, you are also a dear guest to us.)
Which countries have you seen? What shall I do for you? Tell me that, O foremost of the twice-born, for you are a dear guest to us. (15-45-4)

चिरदृष्टोऽसि मे राजन्नागतोऽस्मि तपोवनात्। परिदृष्टानि तीर्थानि गङ्गा चैव मया नृप ॥१५-४५-५॥
ciradṛṣṭo'si me rājan nāgato'smi tapovanāt। paridṛṣṭāni tīrthāni gaṅgā caiva mayā nṛpa ॥15-45-5॥
[चिरदृष्टः (ciradṛṣṭaḥ) - long-seen; (seen after a long time); असि (asi) - you are; मे (me) - to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तपःवनात् (tapo-vanāt) - from the forest of austerities; परिदृष्टानि (paridṛṣṭāni) - having been seen all around; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga (the river); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Long-seen you are to me, O king, have come I from the forest of austerities. Having been seen all around, holy places and Ganga indeed by me, O king.)
O king, I see you again after a long time; I have come from the ascetic grove. I have seen all the sacred places and the Ganga, O king. (15-45-5)

वदन्ति पुरुषा मेऽद्य गङ्गातीरनिवासिनः। धृतराष्ट्रं महात्मानमास्थितं परमं तपः ॥१५-४५-६॥
vadanti puruṣā me'dya gaṅgātīranivāsinaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ mahātmānamāsthitaṃ paramaṃ tapaḥ॥15-45-6॥
[वदन्ति (vadanti) - they say; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; गङ्गातीरनिवासिनः (gaṅgātīranivāsinaḥ) - (those) dwelling on the bank of the Ganga; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; आस्थितम् (āsthitam) - undertaking; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance;]
(They say men to me today (who are) dwelling on the bank of the Ganga: Dhritarashtra, the great-souled, is undertaking supreme penance.)
Men residing on the bank of the Ganga have told me today that the great-souled Dhritarashtra has undertaken supreme penance. (15-45-6)
अपि दृष्टस्त्वया तत्र कुशली स कुरूद्वहः। गान्धारी च पृथा चैव सूतपुत्रश्च सञ्जयः ॥१५-४५-७॥
api dṛṣṭastvayā tatra kuśalī sa kurūdvahaḥ। gāndhārī ca pṛthā caiva sūtaputraśca sañjayaḥ ॥15-45-7॥
[अपि (api) (api) - indeed; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; त्वया (tvayā) (tvayā) - by you; तत्र (tatra) (tatra) - there; कुशली (kuśalī) (kuśalī) - well; स (sa) (sa) - he; कुरूद्वहः (kurūdvahaḥ) (kurūdvahaḥ) - the chief of Kurus; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) (gāndhārī) - Gāndhārī; च (ca) (ca) - and; पृथा (pṛthā) (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; सूतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) (sūtaputraḥ) - the son of a charioteer; च (ca) (ca) - and; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) (sañjayaḥ) - Sañjaya;]
(Indeed, seen by you there, well, he, chief of Kurus. Gāndhārī and Pṛthā and indeed the son of a charioteer and Sañjaya.)
Has that chief of the Kurus, whom you saw there, been well? And Gāndhārī, Pṛthā, the son of a charioteer, and Sañjaya? (15-45-7)
कथं च वर्तते चाद्य पिता मम स पार्थिवः। श्रोतुमिच्छामि भगवन्यदि दृष्टस्त्वया नृपः ॥१५-४५-८॥
kathaṁ ca vartate ca adya pitā mama sa pārthivaḥ। śrotum icchāmi bhagavan yadi dṛṣṭaḥ tvayā nṛpaḥ ॥15-45-8॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; वर्तते (vartate) - does (he) fare; च (ca) - and; आद्य (adya) - today; पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - my; स (sa) - that; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; यदि (yadi) - if; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - (he has been) seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king;]
(How and fares and today father my that king? To hear I wish, O venerable one, if seen by you (the) king.)
O venerable one, I wish to hear how my father, that king, is faring today, if the king has been seen by you. (15-45-8)

स्थिरीभूय महाराज शृणु सर्वं यथातथम्। यथा श्रुतं च दृष्टं च मया तस्मिंस्तपोवने ॥१५-४५-९॥
sthirībhūya mahārāja śṛṇu sarvaṃ yathātatham। yathā śrutaṃ ca dṛṣṭaṃ ca mayā tasmiṃstapovane ॥15-45-9॥
[स्थिरीभूय (sthirībhūya) - becoming steady; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; यथातथम् (yathātatham) - exactly as it was; यथा (yathā) - as; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; च (ca) - and; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तपोवने (tapovane) - sacred forest;]
(Becoming steady, O great king, hear everything exactly as it was, as heard and seen by me in that sacred forest.)
O great king, after becoming steady, listen to everything just as it truly happened—as I heard and saw it in that sacred forest. (15-45-9)
वनवासनिवृत्तेषु भवत्सु कुरुनन्दन। कुरुक्षेत्रात्पिता तुभ्यं गङ्गाद्वारं ययौ नृप ॥१५-४५-१०॥
vanavāsa-nivṛtteṣu bhavatsu kuru-nandana। kurukṣetrāt pitā tubhyaṃ gaṅgādvāraṃ yayau nṛpa ॥15-45-10॥
[वनवासनिवृत्तेषु (vanavāsa-nivṛtteṣu) - when (you all) had finished residing in the forest; भवत्सु (bhavatsu) - when you (pl.); कुरुनन्दन (kuru-nandana) - O delight of the Kurus; कुरुक्षेत्रात् (kurukṣetrāt) - from Kurukṣetra; पिता (pitā) - father; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; गङ्गाद्वारं (gaṅgādvāraṃ) - to Gaṅgādvāra; ययौ (yayau) - went; नृप (nṛpa) - the king;]
(When you (all) had finished residing in the forest, O delight of the Kurus, from Kurukṣetra your father, the king, went to Gaṅgādvāra to you.)
O delight of the Kurus, when you all had returned from living in the forest, your father, the king, came from Kurukṣetra to Gaṅgādvāra to meet you. (15-45-10)
गान्धार्या सहितो धीमान्वध्वा कुन्त्या समन्वितः। सञ्जयेन च सूतेन साग्निहोत्रः सयाजकः ॥१५-४५-११॥
gāndhāryā sahito dhīmān vadhvā kuntiyā samanvitaḥ। sañjayena ca sūtena sāgnihotraḥ sayājakaḥ॥15-45-11॥
[गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - with Gandhari; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; वध्वा (vadhvā) - with wife; कुन्त्या (kuntiyā) - with Kunti; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - accompanied; सञ्जयेन (sañjayena) - by Sanjaya; च (ca) - and; सूतेन (sūtena) - by the charioteer; स (sa) - with; अग्निहोत्रः (agnihotraḥ) - priest having agnihotra rite; सयाजकः (sayājakaḥ) - with sacrificer (Yajaka);]
(With Gandhari accompanied, the wise one, with wife Kunti, accompanied; by Sanjaya and by the charioteer, with Agnihotra priest, with sacrificer (Yajaka). (15-45-11))
Accompanied by Gandhari, and wise, joined by his wife Kunti, along with Sanjaya the charioteer, as well as priests performing Agnihotra and Yajnas. (15-45-11)
आतस्थे स तपस्तीव्रं पिता तव तपोधनः। वीटां मुखे समाधाय वायुभक्षोऽभवन्मुनिः ॥१५-४५-१२॥
ātasthe sa tapastīvraṃ pitā tava tapodhanaḥ। vīṭāṃ mukhe samādhāya vāyubhakṣo'bhavanmuniḥ ॥15-45-12॥
[आतस्थे (ātasthe) - undertook; began; assumed; स (sa) - he; तपस्तीव्रं (tapastīvram) - severe austerity; पिता (pitā) - father; तव (tava) - your; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - ascetic; possessor of austerity; वीटां (vīṭām) - betel-nut; (chewing substance); मुखे (mukhe) - in (the) mouth; समाधाय (samādhāya) - having placed; वायुभक्षः (vāyubhakṣaḥ) - air-eater; (one who subsists on air;) अभवत् (abhavat) - became; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage;]
(He undertook severe austerity, your father, the ascetic; having placed betel-nut in (his) mouth, the sage became one who subsists on air.)
Your father, the ascetic, undertook severe austerity; placing betel-nut in his mouth, the sage became one who lived only on air. (15-45-12)
वने स मुनिभिः सर्वैः पूज्यमानो महातपाः। त्वगस्थिमात्रशेषः स षण्मासानभवन्नृपः ॥१५-४५-१३॥
vane sa munibhiḥ sarvaiḥ pūjyamāno mahātapāḥ। tvag-asthi-mātra-śeṣaḥ sa ṣaṇ-māsān abhavan nṛpaḥ ॥15-45-13॥
[वने (vane) - in the forest; स (sa) - he; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; त्वगस्थिमात्रशेषः (tvag-asthi-mātra-śeṣaḥ) - remaining only skin and bones; स (sa) - he; षण्मासान् (ṣaṇ-māsān) - six months; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(In the forest, he, being honored by all the sages, the great ascetic, remaining only skin and bones, he, for six months, became the king.)
He, a great ascetic, honored by all the sages in the forest, remained as only skin and bones and thus survived as king for six months. (15-45-13)
गान्धारी तु जलाहारा कुन्ती मासोपवासिनी। सञ्जयः षष्ठभक्तेन वर्तयामास भारत ॥१५-४५-१४॥
gāndhārī tu jalāhārā kuntī māsopavāsinī। sañjayaḥ ṣaṣṭhabhaktena vartayāmāsa bhārata ॥15-45-14॥
[गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; (proper noun, a queen); तु (tu) - but; however; जलाहारा (jalāhārā) - subsisting on water; consuming only water; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kunti; (proper noun, a queen); मासोपवासिनी (māsopavāsinī) - practicing fast for a month; having a vow of fasting for a month; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; (proper noun, minister); षष्ठभक्तेन (ṣaṣṭhabhaktena) - by the sixth meal; with six meals (one meal every sixth day or six days); वर्तयामास (vartayāmāsa) - sustained; lived; kept alive; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; (vocative, referring to the descendant of Bharata, i.e., Dhritarashtra or the listener);]
(Gandhari but water-subsisting, Kunti month-fasting, Sanjaya by the sixth meal sustained, O Bhārata.)
But Gandhari survived only on water, Kunti observed a fast for a month, and Sanjaya sustained himself with a meal on every sixth day, O Bhārata. (15-45-14)
अग्नींस्तु याजकास्तत्र जुहुवुर्विधिवत्प्रभो। दृश्यतोऽदृश्यतश्चैव वने तस्मिन्नृपस्य ह ॥१५-४५-१५॥
agnīṁs tu yājakās tatra juhuvur vidhivat prabho। dṛśyataḥ adṛśyataḥ ca eva vane tasmin nṛpasya ha ॥15-45-15॥
[अग्नीन् (agnīn) - fires (acc. pl.); तु (tu) - but; याजकाः (yājakāḥ) - priests; तत्र (tatra) - there; जुहुवुः (juhuvur) - they offered (oblations); विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; दृश्यतः (dṛśyataḥ) - visible; अदृश्यतः (adṛśyataḥ) - invisible; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नृपस्य (nṛpasya) - of the king; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(But the priests there, O lord, offered fires according to rule; visible and invisible indeed, in that forest of the king.)
O lord, the priests there offered oblations into the fires according to rule, both visible and invisible, in the forest belonging to that king. (15-45-15)
अनिकेतोऽथ राजा स बभूव वनगोचरः। ते चापि सहिते देव्यौ सञ्जयश्च तमन्वयुः ॥१५-४५-१६॥
aniketo'tha rājā sa babhūva vanagocaraḥ. te cāpi sahite devyau sañjayaś ca tam anvayuḥ ॥15-45-16॥
[अनिकेतः (aniketaḥ) - having no home; homeless; अथ (atha) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; सः (saḥ) - he; बभूव (babhūva) - became; वनगोचरः (vanagocaraḥ) - living in the forest; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सहिते (sahite) - accompanied; देव्यौ (devyau) - the two queens; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - followed;]
(Then the king, having no home, became a forest-dweller. And they also, the two queens accompanied and Sanjaya, followed him.)
Then the king became homeless, living in the forest; the two queens and Sanjaya also accompanied and followed him. (15-45-16)
सञ्जयो नृपतेर्नेता समेषु विषमेषु च। गान्धार्यास्तु पृथा राजंश्चक्षुरासीदनिन्दिता ॥१५-४५-१७॥
sañjayo nṛpater netā sameṣu viṣameṣu ca. gāndhāryās tu pṛthā rājan cakṣur āsīd aninditā ॥15-45-17॥

(Sañjaya of the king (was) the leader in well-matched and difficult (situations). Of Gandhari, but Pṛthā, O king, (was) the blameless eye.)
Sañjaya was the king’s leader in all situations, both even and uneven, while, O king, blameless Pṛthā was the eyes of Gandhari. (15-45-17)
ततः कदाचिद्गङ्गायाः कच्छे स नृपसत्तमः। गङ्गायामाप्लुतो धीमानाश्रमाभिमुखोऽभवत् ॥१५-४५-१८॥
tataḥ kadācid gaṅgāyāḥ kacche sa nṛpasattamaḥ। gaṅgāyām āpluto dhīmān āśramābhimukho'bhavat ॥15-45-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कदाचित् (kadācit) - sometime; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; कच्छे (kacche) - on the bank; स (sa) - he; नृपसत्तमः (nṛpasattamaḥ) - best of kings; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in Gaṅgā; आप्लुतः (āplutaḥ) - having bathed; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; आश्रमाभिमुखः (āśramābhimukhaḥ) - towards the hermitage; अभवत् (abhavat) - became (went);]
(Then sometime on the bank of Gaṅgā, he, the best of kings, having bathed in Gaṅgā, wise, became (went) towards the hermitage.)
Then, at some time, on the bank of the Gaṅgā, he, the best of kings and wise, having bathed in the Gaṅgā, proceeded towards the hermitage. (15-45-18)
अथ वायुः समुद्भूतो दावाग्निरभवन्महान्। ददाह तद्वनं सर्वं परिगृह्य समन्ततः ॥१५-४५-१९॥
atha vāyuḥ samudbhūto dāvāgnir abhavan mahān। dadāha tad vanaṃ sarvaṃ parigṛhya samantataḥ॥15-45-19॥

In that forest, when the greatest calamity arrived, due to lack of food the king was barely breathing and powerless to move, and your two mothers were exceedingly thin and unable to depart. (15-45-21)
ततः स नृपतिर्दृष्ट्वा वह्निमायान्तमन्तिकात्। इदमाह ततः सूतं सञ्जयं पृथिवीपते ॥१५-४५-२२॥
tataḥ sa nṛpatir dṛṣṭvā vahnim āyāntam antikāt. idam āha tataḥ sūtaṃ sañjayaṃ pṛthivīpate ॥15-45-22॥

गच्छ सञ्जय यत्राग्निर्न त्वां दहति कर्हिचित्। वयमत्राग्निना युक्ता गमिष्यामः परां गतिम् ॥१५-४५-२३॥
gaccha sañjaya yatrāgnir na tvāṁ dahati karhicit। vayam atrāgninā yuktā gamiṣyāmaḥ parāṁ gatim ॥15-45-23॥

(Go, Sañjaya, where fire does not burn you at any time. We, joined here by fire, will go to the supreme state.)
Go, Sañjaya, to where the fire never burns you. Here, joined by fire, we will attain the highest state. (15-45-23)
तमुवाच किलोद्विग्नः सञ्जयो वदतां वरः। राजन्मृत्युरनिष्टोऽयं भविता ते वृथाग्निना ॥१५-४५-२४॥
tam uvāca kilodvignaḥ sañjayo vadatāṃ varaḥ। rājan mṛtyur aniṣṭo'yaṃ bhavitā te vṛthāgninā॥15-45-24॥

(Him said indeed troubled Sañjaya, best of speakers: O King, death undesired, this will be to you by useless fire.)
Sañjaya, greatly troubled, the best among speakers, said to him: "O King, this undesired death will come to you because of a useless fire." (15-45-24)
न चोपायं प्रपश्यामि मोक्षणे जातवेदसः। यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥१५-४५-२५॥
na copāyaṃ prapaśyāmi mokṣaṇe jātavedasaḥ। yad atrānantaraṃ kāryaṃ tad bhavān vaktum arhati ॥15-45-25॥

And I do not see any means for the release of Jātavedas; whatever subsequent action is here, you are worthy to speak of that. (15-45-25)
इत्युक्तः सञ्जयेनेदं पुनराह स पार्थिवः। नैष मृत्युरनिष्टो नो निःसृतानां गृहात्स्वयम् ॥१५-४५-२६॥
ity-uktaḥ sañjayenedaṃ punarāha sa pārthivaḥ। naiṣa mṛtyuraniṣṭo no niḥsṛtānāṃ gṛhātsvayam॥15-45-26॥

After Sañjaya spoke thus, the king again said: "This death is not unwelcome to us who have left the house voluntarily." (15-45-26)
जलमग्निस्तथा वायुरथ वापि विकर्शनम्। तापसानां प्रशस्यन्ते गच्छ सञ्जय माचिरम् ॥१५-४५-२७॥
jalam-agnis-tathā vāyuḥ-atha vā api vikarṣaṇam। tāpasānām praśasyante gaccha sañjaya mā aciram ॥15-45-27॥

ऋषिपुत्रो मनीषी स राजा चक्रेऽस्य तद्वचः। संनिरुध्येन्द्रियग्राममासीत्काष्ठोपमस्तदा ॥१५-४५-३०॥
ṛṣiputro manīṣī sa rājā cakre'sya tadvacaḥ। saṁnirudhya indriyagrāmam āsīt kāṣṭhopamas tadā ॥15-45-30॥

गान्धारी च महाभागा जननी च पृथा तव। दावाग्निना समायुक्ते स च राजा पिता तव ॥१५-४५-३१॥

सञ्जयस्तु महामात्रस्तस्माद्दावादमुच्यत। गङ्गाकूले मया दृष्टस्तापसैः परिवारितः ॥१५-४५-३२॥
sañjayastu mahāmātrastas māddāvādam ucyata। gaṅgākūle mayā dṛṣṭastāpasaiḥ parivāritaḥ ॥15-45-32॥

स तानामन्त्र्य तेजस्वी निवेद्यैतच्च सर्वशः। प्रययौ सञ्जयः सूतो हिमवन्तं महीधरम् ॥१५-४५-३३॥
sa tān-āmantrya tejasvī nivedya etat ca sarvaśaḥ। prayayau sañjayaḥ sūtaḥ himavantaṃ mahīdharam ॥15-45-33॥

yadṛcchayānu-vrajatā mayā rājñaḥ kalevaram। tayoś ca devyor ubhayoḥ dṛṣṭāni bharatarṣabha ॥15-45-35॥

ततस्तपोवने तस्मिन्समाजग्मुस्तपोधनाः। श्रुत्वा राज्ञस्तथा निष्ठां न त्वशोचन्गतिं च ते ॥१५-४५-३६॥
tatas tapovane tasmin samājagmus tapodhanāḥ। śrutvā rājñas tathā niṣṭhāṃ na tvaśocan gatiṃ ca te॥15-45-36॥

na śocitavyaṃ rājeṃdra svantaḥ sa pṛthivīpatiḥ। prāptavān agnisaṃyogaṃ gāndhārī jananī ca te॥15-45-38॥

[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - great-souled; निर्याणम् (niryāṇam) - departure; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(This having heard but of all the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, the departure of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, grief arose great.)
But having heard this, great grief arose in all the great-souled Pāṇḍavas at the departure of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (15-45-39)
अन्तःपुराणां च तदा महानार्तस्वरोऽभवत्। पौराणां च महाराज श्रुत्वा राज्ञस्तदा गतिम् ॥१५-४५-४०॥
antaḥpurāṇāṃ ca tadā mahānārtasvaro'bhavat। paurāṇāṃ ca mahārāja śrutvā rājñastadā gatim ॥15-45-40॥

(Of the women of the inner apartments and then a great distressed cry arose. Of the townspeople also, O great king, having heard the fate of the king then.)
Then, O great king, a great cry of distress arose from the women of the inner apartments, and also from the townspeople, having heard the fate of the king. (15-45-40)
अहो धिगिति राजा तु विक्रुश्य भृशदुःखितः। ऊर्ध्वबाहुः स्मरन्मातुः प्ररुरोद युधिष्ठिरः ॥ भीमसेनपुरोगाश्च भ्रातरः सर्व एव ते ॥१५-४५-४१॥
aho dhig iti rājā tu vikruśya bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ। ūrdhvabāhuḥ smaran mātuḥ praruroda yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥ bhīmasenapurogāś ca bhrātaraḥ sarva eva te॥15-45-41॥
[अहो (aho) - ah!; alas!; धिगिति (dhig iti) - fie! thus; (expression of reproach or pain); राजा (rājā) - king; तु (tu) - but; विक्रुश्य (vikruśya) - having cried aloud; भृशदुःखितः (bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ) - greatly distressed; ऊर्ध्वबाहुः (ūrdhvabāhuḥ) - with arms raised; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of (his) mother; प्ररुरोद (praruroda) - wept aloud; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; भीमसेनपुरोगाश्च (bhīmasenapurogāś ca) - headed by Bhimasena, and; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; सर्व एव (sarva eva) - all indeed; ते (te) - they;]
(Ah! Fie! thus the king but, having cried aloud, greatly distressed, with arms raised, remembering (his) mother, Yudhishthira wept aloud. Headed by Bhimasena, and (the) brothers — all indeed they.)
Ah! Fie! So the king, loudly crying out, greatly distressed, with raised arms, remembering his mother, Yudhishthira wept. His brothers, all of them headed by Bhimasena, also did so. (15-45-41)
अन्तःपुरेषु च तदा सुमहान्रुदितस्वनः। प्रादुरासीन्महाराज पृथां श्रुत्वा तथागताम् ॥१५-४५-४२॥
antaḥpureṣu ca tadā sumahān ruditasvanaḥ। prādurāsīn mahārāja pṛthāṃ śrutvā tathāgatām ॥15-45-42॥
[अन्तःपुरेषु (antaḥpureṣu) - in the inner chambers; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - at that time; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; रुदितस्वनः (ruditasvanaḥ) - sound of crying; प्रादुरासीन् (prādurāsīn) - arose; appeared; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पृथां (pṛthām) - Kuntī (proper noun, accusative singular); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तथागताम् (tathāgatām) - having come thus;]
(In the inner chambers and at that time, a very great sound of crying arose, O great king, having heard Kuntī having come thus.)
O great king, at that time, a very great sound of weeping arose in the inner chambers when Kuntī had come and was heard. (15-45-42)
तं च वृद्धं तथा दग्धं हतपुत्रं नराधिपम्। अन्वशोचन्त ते सर्वे गान्धारीं च तपस्विनीम् ॥१५-४५-४३॥
taṁ ca vṛddhaṁ tathā dagdhaṁ hataputraṁ narādhipam। anvaśocanta te sarve gāndhārīṁ ca tapasvinīm॥15-45-43॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; च (ca) - and; वृद्धं (vṛddham) - aged; तथा (tathā) - thus; दग्धं (dagdham) - burnt; हतपुत्रं (hataputram) - whose son was slain; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - king; अन्वशोचन्त (anvaśocanta) - they lamented; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गान्धारीं (gāndhārīm) - Gandhari; च (ca) - and; तपस्विनीम् (tapasvinīm) - the ascetic;]
(Him and aged thus burnt, whose son was slain, the king; they all lamented, Gandhari and the ascetic.)
They all lamented the aged king who had been burnt and whose son was slain, as well as Gandhari, the ascetic. (15-45-43)
तस्मिन्नुपरते शब्दे मुहूर्तादिव भारत। निगृह्य बाष्पं धैर्येण धर्मराजोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥१५-४५-४४॥
tasmin nuparate śabde muhūrtād iva bhārata। nigṛhya bāṣpaṃ dhairyeṇa dharmarājo'bravīd idam ॥15-45-44॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; (locative singular of tat); उपरते (uparate) - ceased; stopped; शब्दे (śabde) - sound; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - after a moment; इव (iva) - as if; like; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; O descendant of Bharata; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having restrained; बाष्पं (bāṣpam) - tears; धैर्येण (dhairyeṇa) - with courage; with fortitude; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; Yudhiṣṭhira; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(In that ceased sound, after a moment, as if, O Bhārata; having restrained tears with courage, the king of dharma said this.)
When that sound ceased, after a moment, as if, O Bhārata, having held back his tears with courage, King Yudhiṣṭhira spoke these words. (15-45-44)
