एवं प्रयतमानानां वृष्णीनामन्धकैः सह। कालो गृहाणि सर्वेषां परिचक्राम नित्यशः ॥१६-३-१॥
evaṁ prayatamānānāṁ vṛṣṇīnāmandhakaiḥ saha। kālo gṛhāṇi sarveṣāṁ paricakrāma nityaśaḥ ॥16-3-1॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; प्रयतमानानाम् (prayatamānānām) - of those striving; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; अन्धकैः (andhakaiḥ) - with the Andhakas; सह (saha) - together with; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; गृहाणि (gṛhāṇi) - houses; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; परिचक्राम (paricakrāma) - moved around; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly;]
(Thus, of those striving, of the Vṛṣṇis, together with the Andhakas, Time moved around the houses of all constantly.)
Thus, even while the Vṛṣṇis, together with the Andhakas, were striving, Time continually moved among all their houses. (16-3-1)
करालो विकटो मुण्डः पुरुषः कृष्णपिङ्गलः। गृहाण्यवेक्ष्य वृष्णीनां नादृश्यत पुनः क्वचित् ॥१६-३-२॥
karālo vikaṭo muṇḍaḥ puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇapiṅgalaḥ. gṛhāṇy avekṣya vṛṣṇīnāṃ nādṛśyata punaḥ kvacit ॥16-3-2॥
[करालः (karālaḥ) - terrible (having fearful jaws); विकटः (vikaṭaḥ) - deformed; grotesque; मुण्डः (muṇḍaḥ) - shaven-headed; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; person; कृष्णपिङ्गलः (kṛṣṇapiṅgalaḥ) - dark-tawny; blackish-brown; गृहाणि (gṛhāṇi) - houses; अवेक्ष्य (avekṣya) - having looked at; having observed; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; न अदृश्यत (na adṛśyata) - was not seen; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; at any time;]
(Terrible, deformed, shaven-headed man, dark-tawny, having looked at the houses of the Vṛṣṇis, was not seen again anywhere.)
A terrifying, grotesque, shaven-headed man with dark-tawny complexion, after observing the houses of the Vṛṣṇis, was never seen again anywhere. (16-3-2)
उत्पेदिरे महावाता दारुणाश्चा दिने दिने। वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय बहवो रोमहर्षणाः ॥१६-३-३॥

[उत्पेदिरे (utpedire) - arose; sprung up; महावाता (mahāvātāḥ) - great winds; दारुणाः (dāruṇāḥ) - terrible; च (ca) - and; दिने दिने (dine dine) - day by day; वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय (vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya) - for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; रोमहर्षणाः (romaharṣaṇāḥ) - hair-raising;]
(Arose great winds, terrible and, day by day; for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, many that were hair-raising.)
Great and terrible winds arose day by day—many hair-raising ones—for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas. (16-3-3)
विवृद्धमूषका रथ्या विभिन्नमणिकास्तथा। चीचीकूचीति वाश्यन्त्यः सारिका वृष्णिवेश्मसु ॥ नोपशाम्यति शब्दश्च स दिवारात्रमेव हि ॥१६-३-४॥
vivṛddhamūṣakā rathyā vividhnamaṇikās tathā। cīcīkūcīti vāśyantyaḥ sārikā vṛṣṇiveśmasu ॥ nopaśāmyati śabdaś ca sa divārātrameva hi ॥16-3-4॥

Grown mice, various songbirds, and mynah birds with their constant cries in the houses of the Vṛṣṇis; the sound does not cease, it continues day and night. (16-3-4)
अनुकुर्वन्नुलूकानां सारसा विरुतं तथा। अजाः शिवानां च रुतमन्वकुर्वत भारत ॥१६-३-५॥
anukurvannulūkānāṃ sārasā virutaṃ tathā| ajāḥ śivānāṃ ca rutamanvakurvata bhārata ॥16-3-5॥

पाण्डुरा रक्तपादाश्च विहगाः कालचोदिताः। वृष्ण्यन्धकानां गेहेषु कपोता व्यचरंस्तदा ॥१६-३-६॥
pāṇḍurā raktapādāś ca vihagāḥ kālacoditāḥ। vṛṣṇyandhakānāṃ geheṣu kapotā vyacaraṃs tadā॥16-3-6॥

At that time, white, red-footed birds—pigeons impelled by fate—wandered in the houses of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas. (16-3-6)
व्यजायन्त खरा गोषु करभाश्वतरीषु च। शुनीष्वपि बिडालाश्च मूषका नकुलीषु च ॥१६-३-७॥
vyajāyanta kharā goṣu karabhāśvatarīṣu ca। śunīṣvapi biḍālāśca mūṣakā nakulīṣu ca ॥16-3-7॥
[व्यजायन्त (vyajāyanta) - were born; खरा (kharāḥ) - asses; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; करभा (karabhāḥ) - calves; अश्वतरीषु (aśvatarīṣu) - among mules; च (ca) - and; शुनीषु (śunīṣu) - among female dogs; अपि (api) - also; बिडालाः (biḍālāḥ) - cats; च (ca) - and; मूषका (mūṣakāḥ) - mice; नकुलीषु (nakulīṣu) - among mongooses; च (ca) - and;]

नापत्रपन्त पापानि कुर्वन्तो वृष्णयस्तदा। प्राद्विषन्ब्राह्मणांश्चापि पितॄन्देवांस्तथैव च ॥१६-३-८॥
nāpatrapanta pāpāni kurvanto vṛṣṇayas tadā। prādviṣan brāhmaṇāṃś cāpi pitṝn devāṃs tathaiva ca ॥16-3-8॥
[न (na) - not; अपत्रपन्त (apatrapanta) - they felt no shame; पापानि (pāpāni) - sins; कुर्वन्तः (kurvantaḥ) - doing; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis; तदा (tadā) - at that time; प्राद्विषन् (prādviṣan) - they hated; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers (ancestors); देवान् (devān) - gods; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and;]
(Not feeling any shame, doing sins, the Vṛṣṇis at that time hated Brāhmaṇas and also fathers, the gods in the same way and.)
At that time, the Vṛṣṇis, doing sinful acts without any shame, hated Brāhmaṇas, their ancestors, and the gods in the same manner. (16-3-8)
गुरूंश्चाप्यवमन्यन्त न तु रामजनार्दनौ। पत्न्यः पतीन्व्युच्चरन्त पत्नीश्च पतयस्तथा ॥१६-३-९॥
gurūṃś cāpy avamanyanta na tu rāmajanārdanau | patnyaḥ patīn vyuccarantaḥ patnīś ca patayas tathā ॥16-3-9॥
[गुरून् (gurūn) - teachers (accusative plural); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अवमन्यन्त (avamanyanta) - they disrespected; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; रामजनार्दनौ (rāmajanārdanau) - Rāma and Janārdana (proper names, dual); पत्न्यः (patnyaḥ) - wives (nominative plural); पतीन् (patīn) - husbands (accusative plural); व्युच्चरन्त (vyuccaranta) - they disrespected; पत्नीः (patnīḥ) - wives (accusative plural); च (ca) - and; पतयः (patayaḥ) - husbands (nominative plural); तथा (tathā) - likewise;]

विभावसुः प्रज्वलितो वामं विपरिवर्तते। नीललोहितमाञ्जिष्ठा विसृजन्नर्चिषः पृथक् ॥१६-३-१०॥
vibhāvasuḥ prajvalito vāmaṃ viparivartate। nīlalohitamāñjiṣṭhā visṛjannarciṣaḥ pṛthak ॥16-3-10॥
[विभावसुः (vibhāvasuḥ) - Agni; fire; प्रज्वलितः (prajvalitaḥ) - ignited; blazing; वामं (vāmaṃ) - to the left; विपरिवर्तते (viparivartate) - turns; revolves; नीललोहितमाञ्जिष्ठा (nīla-lohita-māñjiṣṭhā) - blue, red, and madder-colored; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - emitting; sending out; अर्चिषः (arciṣaḥ) - flames; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; apart;]

उदयास्तमने नित्यं पुर्यां तस्यां दिवाकरः। व्यदृश्यतासकृत्पुम्भिः कबन्धैः परिवारितः ॥१६-३-११॥
udayāstamane nityaṃ puryāṃ tasyāṃ divākaraḥ। vyadṛśyata asakṛt pumbhiḥ kabandhaiḥ parivāritaḥ॥16-3-11॥
[उदयास्तमने (udayāstamane) - rising-and-setting; (i.e., at sunrise and sunset;. नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; पुर्यां (puryāṃ) - in the city; तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in that (city); दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - the sun; व्यदृश्यत (vyadṛśyata) - was seen; असकृत् (asakṛt) - again and again; पुम्भिः (pumbhiḥ) - by men; कबन्धैः (kabandhaiḥ) - by (headless) torsos; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded;]
(At rising-and-setting, always in the city, in that (city), the sun was seen again and again by men, surrounded by (headless) torsos.)
In that city, at every sunrise and sunset, the sun was always seen repeatedly by people, surrounded by headless bodies. (16-3-11)
महानसेषु सिद्धेऽन्ने संस्कृतेऽतीव भारत। आहार्यमाणे कृमयो व्यदृश्यन्त नराधिप ॥१६-३-१२॥
mahānaseṣu siddhe'nne saṁskṛte'tīva bhārata। āhāryamāṇe kṛmayo vyadṛśyanta narādhipa ॥16-3-12॥
[महानसेषु (mahānaseṣu) - in the kitchens; सिद्धे (siddhe) - cooked; अन्ने (anne) - food; संस्कृते (saṁskṛte) - well-prepared; अतीव (atīva) - very much; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; आहार्यमाणे (āhāryamāṇe) - being brought (out); कृमयः (kṛmayaḥ) - worms; व्यदृश्यन्त (vyadṛśyanta) - were seen; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(In the kitchens, when the thoroughly prepared, cooked food was being brought out, worms were very much seen, O Bhārata, O king.)
O Bhārata, O king, in the kitchens, when the well-prepared cooked food was being brought out, worms were clearly seen. (16-3-12)
पुण्याहे वाच्यमाने च जपत्सु च महात्मसु। अभिधावन्तः श्रूयन्ते न चादृश्यत कश्चन ॥१६-३-१३॥
puṇyāhe vācyamāne ca japatsu ca mahātmasu। abhidhāvantaḥ śrūyante na cādṛśyata kaścana॥16-3-13॥
[पुण्याहे (puṇyāhe) - on the auspicious occasion; वाच्यमाने (vācyamāne) - while being proclaimed; च (ca) - and; जपत्सु (japatsu) - engaged in reciting; च (ca) - and; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - among the great-souled; अभिधावन्तः (abhidhāvantaḥ) - those running about; श्रूयन्ते (śrūyante) - are heard; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone;]

परस्परं च नक्षत्रं हन्यमानं पुनः पुनः। ग्रहैरपश्यन्सर्वे ते नात्मनस्तु कथञ्चन ॥१६-३-१४॥
parasparaṃ ca nakṣatraṃ hanyamānaṃ punaḥ punaḥ। grahairapaśyansarve te nātmanastu kathaṃcana॥16-3-14॥

They all saw stars, again and again striking each other, and being struck by planets; but by no means did they ever see their own (planet) being struck. (16-3-14)
नदन्तं पाञ्चजन्यं च वृष्ण्यन्धकनिवेशने। समन्तात्प्रत्यवाश्यन्त रासभा दारुणस्वराः ॥१६-३-१५॥
nadantaṃ pāñcajanyaṃ ca vṛṣṇyandhakaniveśane। samantātpratyavāśyanta rāsabhā dāruṇasvarāḥ ॥16-3-15॥

As the sound of the Pāñcajanya conch echoed in the settlement of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, donkeys with harsh voices brayed loudly in response from all sides. (16-3-15)
एवं पश्यन्हृषीकेशः सम्प्राप्तं कालपर्ययम्। त्रयोदश्याममावास्यां तां दृष्ट्वा प्राब्रवीदिदम् ॥१६-३-१६॥
evaṃ paśyan hṛṣīkeśaḥ samprāptaṃ kālaparyayam। trayodaśyām amāvāsyāṃ tāṃ dṛṣṭvā prābravīd idam ॥16-3-16॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; हृषीकेशः (hṛṣīkeśaḥ) - Hṛṣīkeśa (epithet of Krishna); सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptam) - arrived; कालपर्ययम् (kālaparyayam) - cycle of time; period; त्रयोदश्याम् (trayodaśyām) - on the thirteenth (lunar day); अमावास्याम् (amāvāsyām) - new moon night; ताम् (tām) - her (that); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्राब्रवीत् (prābravīt) - he spoke; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Thus, seeing Hṛṣīkeśa, the arrived cycle of time; on the thirteenth lunar day, on the new moon night, her having seen, he spoke this.)
Thus, seeing the arrival of the time cycle, Hṛṣīkeśa, on the thirteenth lunar day (trayodaśī) and new moon night (amāvāsyā), saw her and spoke this. (16-3-16)
चतुर्दशी पञ्चदशी कृतेयं राहुणा पुनः। तदा च भारते युद्धे प्राप्ता चाद्य क्षयाय नः ॥१६-३-१७॥
caturdaśī pañcadaśī kṛteyaṁ rāhuṇā punaḥ। tadā ca bhārate yuddhe prāptā cādya kṣayāya naḥ ॥16-3-17॥
[चतुर्दशी (caturdaśī) - fourteenth (lunar day); पञ्चदशी (pañcadaśī) - fifteenth (lunar day, full moon or new moon); कृता (kṛtā) - made; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); राहुणा (rāhuṇā) - by Rāhu; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तदा (tadā) - then; च (ca) - and; भारते (bhārate) - in Bhārata (India, or the great war); युद्धे (yuddhe) - in the battle; प्राप्ता (prāptā) - obtained; च (ca) - and; अद्य (adya) - today; क्षयाय (kṣayāya) - for destruction; नः (naḥ) - our;]
(Fourteenth, fifteenth made this by Rāhu again; then and in Bhārata in the battle obtained and today for destruction our.)
This (lunar day), once made both the fourteenth and fifteenth by Rāhu, was once gained in the battle in Bhārata and has today come again for our destruction. (16-3-17)
विमृशन्नेव कालं तं परिचिन्त्य जनार्दनः। मेने प्राप्तं स षट्त्रिंशं वर्षं वै केशिसूदनः ॥१६-३-१८॥
vimṛśann eva kālaṃ taṃ paricintya janārdanaḥ। mene prāptaṃ sa ṣaṭtriṃśaṃ varṣaṃ vai keśisūdanaḥ॥16-3-18॥
[विमृशन् (vimṛśan) - considering; एव (eva) - indeed; कालं (kālam) - time; तं (tam) - that; परिचिन्त्य (paricintya) - reflecting; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; मेने (mene) - he considered; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - attained; स (sa) - he; षट्-त्रिंशं (ṣaṭ-triṃśam) - thirty-sixth; वर्षं (varṣam) - year; वै (vai) - indeed; केशिसूदनः (keśisūdanaḥ) - Kesisudana;]
(Considering indeed that time and reflecting, Janardana considered: he indeed, Kesisudana, had reached the thirty-sixth year.)
Janardana, having considered and reflected on that time, thought that Kesisudana had now reached the thirty-sixth year. (16-3-18)
पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्ता गान्धारी हतबान्धवा। यदनुव्याजहारार्ता तदिदं समुपागतम् ॥१६-३-१९॥
putraśokābhisantaptā gāndhārī hatabāndhavā। yadanuvyājahārārtā tadidaṃ samupāgatam ॥16-3-19॥

इदं च तदनुप्राप्तमब्रवीद्यद्युधिष्ठिरः। पुरा व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु दृष्ट्वोत्पातान्सुदारुणान् ॥१६-३-२०॥
idaṃ ca tad-anuprāptam abravīd yad yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. purā vyūḍheṣu anīkeṣu dṛṣṭvā utpātān sudāruṇān ॥16-3-20॥

And Yudhiṣṭhira spoke this, which had occurred at that time, recalling how, once, when the armies were arrayed for battle, he had witnessed very dreadful omens. (16-3-20)
इत्युक्त्वा वासुदेवस्तु चिकीर्षन्सत्यमेव तत्। आज्ञापयामास तदा तीर्थयात्रामरिंदम ॥१६-३-२१॥
ity-uktvā vāsudevas-tu cikīrṣan satyam eva tat ājñāpayām āsa tadā tīrthayātrām ariṁdama ॥16-3-21॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vasudeva; तु (tu) - but; चिकीर्षन् (cikīrṣan) - desiring to accomplish; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; आज्ञापयाम् (ājñāpayām) - caused to be commanded; आस (āsa) - he was; तदा (tadā) - then; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrthayātrām) - pilgrimage; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of foes;]
(Thus having spoken, Vasudeva but desiring to accomplish that indeed truth, then caused to be commanded the pilgrimage, O subduer of foes.)
Having thus spoken, Vasudeva, wishing to truly fulfill that, then ordered the pilgrimage, O subduer of foes. (16-3-21)
अघोषयन्त पुरुषास्तत्र केशवशासनात्। तीर्थयात्रा समुद्रे वः कार्येति पुरुषर्षभाः ॥१६-३-२२॥
aghoṣayanta puruṣās tatra keśavaśāsanāt। tīrthayātrā samudre vaḥ kāryeti puruṣarṣabhāḥ ॥16-3-22॥
[अघोषयन्त (aghoṣayanta) - caused to be proclaimed; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; तत्र (tatra) - there; केशवशासनात् (keśavaśāsanāt) - by the order of Keśava; तीर्थयात्रा (tīrthayātrā) - pilgrimage; समुद्रे (samudre) - in the ocean; वः (vaḥ) - for you; कार्येति (kāryeti) - is to be done, thus; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - O best of men;]
(The men there, by the order of Keśava, caused it to be proclaimed: "Pilgrimage to the ocean for you is to be done, O best of men.")
The men there, under Keśava's command, proclaimed: "O best among men, you must undertake a pilgrimage to the ocean." (16-3-22)
