अलङ्काराश्च छत्रं च ध्वजाश्च कवचानि च। ह्रियमाणान्यदृश्यन्त रक्षोभिः सुभयानकैः ॥१६-४-२॥

तच्चाग्निदत्तं कृष्णस्य वज्रनाभमयस्मयम्। दिवमाचक्रमे चक्रं वृष्णीनां पश्यतां तदा ॥१६-४-३॥
taccāgnidattaṃ kṛṣṇasya vajranābhamayasmayam। divamācakrame cakraṃ vṛṣṇīnāṃ paśyatāṃ tadā ॥16-4-3॥

Then, that iron-made discus of Kṛṣṇa, having a thunderbolt-like nave, given by Agni, ascended to heaven, as the Vṛṣṇis watched. (16-4-3)
युक्तं रथं दिव्यमादित्यवर्णं; हयाहरन्पश्यतो दारुकस्य। ते सागरस्योपरिष्ठादवर्त; न्मनोजवाश्चतुरो वाजिमुख्याः ॥१६-४-४॥
yuktaṃ rathaṃ divyam ādityavarṇaṃ; hayāḥ aharan paśyataḥ dārukasya. te sāgarasya upariṣṭhāt avartan; manojavāḥ caturaḥ vājimukhyāḥ ॥16-4-4॥
[युक्तं (yuktam) - joined; yoked; रथं (ratham) - chariot; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; आदित्यवर्णं (ādityavarṇam) - sun-colored; of the color of the sun; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; अहरन् (aharan) - brought; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while watching; दारुकस्य (dārukasya) - of Dāruka; ते (te) - they; सागरस्योपरिष्ठात् (sāgarasya upariṣṭhāt) - from above the ocean; अवर्तन् (avartan) - appeared; मनो जवा (manojavāḥ) - swift as the mind; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; वाजि मुख्याः (vājimukhyāḥ) - chief horses;]
(A yoked chariot, divine, sun-colored; horses brought (it) while Dāruka was watching. They appeared from above the ocean; four chief horses, swift as the mind.)
A divine chariot, radiant like the sun, was yoked; as Dāruka watched, horses brought it. Four chief steeds, swift as the mind, appeared from above the ocean. (16-4-4)
तालः सुपर्णश्च महाध्वजौ तौ; सुपूजितौ रामजनार्दनाभ्याम्। उच्चैर्जह्रुरप्सरसो दिवानिशं; वाचश्चोचुर्गम्यतां तीर्थयात्रा ॥१६-४-५॥
tālaḥ suparṇaś ca mahādhvajau tau; supūjitau rāmajanārdanābhyām. uccair jahru r apsaraso divā-niśaṃ; vācaś c ocuḥ gamyatāṃ tīrthayātrā ॥16-4-5॥

(The palm and Suparṇa, those two great standards, well-honored by Rāma and Janārdana. Aloud, the Apsarases took away (them) day and night; and spoke words: "Let the pilgrimage be gone." (16-4-5))
The palm tree and Suparṇa, those two great banners greatly honored by Rāma and Janārdana, were taken away day and night by the Apsarases with loud voices, who also said: "Let the pilgrimage proceed." (16-4-5)
ततो जिगमिषन्तस्ते वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः। सान्तःपुरास्तदा तीर्थयात्रामैच्छन्नरर्षभाः ॥१६-४-६॥
tato jigamiṣantas te vṛṣṇy-andhaka-mahārathāḥ। sāntaḥpurās tadā tīrtha-yātrām aicchannararṣabhāḥ॥16-4-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; जिगमिषन्तः (jigamiṣantaḥ) - desiring to go; ते (te) - they; वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-mahārathāḥ) - the mighty chariot-warriors of Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; सान्तःपुराः (sāntaḥpurāḥ) - with their families; तदा (tadā) - then; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrtha-yātrām) - pilgrimage; ऐच्छन् (aicchan) - they desired; नरर्षभाः (nararṣabhāḥ) - the foremost among men;]
(Thereafter, desiring to go, they, the mighty chariot-warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, with their families, then, pilgrimage, wished, the foremost among men.)
Thereafter, those mighty chariot-warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, together with their families, then desired to undertake a pilgrimage, being the foremost among men. (16-4-6)
ततो भोज्यं च भक्ष्यं च पेयं चान्धकवृष्णयः। बहु नानाविधं चक्रुर्मद्यं मांसमनेकशः ॥१६-४-७॥
tato bhojyaṃ ca bhakṣyaṃ ca peyaṃ cāndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ। bahu nānāvidhaṃ cakrurmadyaṃ māṃsamanekaśaḥ॥16-4-7॥

(Then edible food and food to be eaten and drink, and the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis; much of various kinds they prepared, intoxicating drink, meat in many (ways).)
Then the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis prepared much food, various kinds of edibles, drink, intoxicating liquor, and meat in many ways. (16-4-7)
ततः सीधुषु सक्ताश्च निर्ययुर्नगराद्बहिः। यानैरश्वैर्गजैश्चैव श्रीमन्तस्तिग्मतेजसः ॥१६-४-८॥
tataḥ sīdhuṣu saktāś ca niryayur nagarād bahiḥ। yānaiḥ aśvaiḥ gajaiḥ ca eva śrīmantas tigmatejasaḥ ॥16-4-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सीधुषु (sīdhuṣu) - in the roads; सक्ताः (saktāḥ) - attached; च (ca) - and; निर्ययुः (niryayuḥ) - departed; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - by vehicles; अश्वैः (aśvaiḥ) - by horses; गजैः (gajaiḥ) - by elephants; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; श्रीमान्तः (śrīmantaḥ) - prosperous; तिग्मतेजसः (tigmatejasaḥ) - of sharp splendor;]
(Then, attached to the roads, and departed from the city outside; by vehicles, by horses, by elephants, and indeed, prosperous, of sharp splendor.)
Then those prosperous men of keen brilliance, attached to the roads, departed outside the city by vehicles, horses, and elephants. (16-4-8)
ततः प्रभासे न्यवसन्यथोद्देशं यथागृहम्। प्रभूतभक्ष्यपेयास्ते सदारा यादवास्तदा ॥१६-४-९॥
tataḥ prabhāse nyavasan yathoddeśaṃ yathāgṛham। prabhūtabhakṣyapeyās te sadārā yādavās tadā ॥16-4-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रभासे (prabhāse) - at Prabhāsa; न्यवसन् (nyavasan) - they dwelt (stayed); यथोद्देशम् (yathoddeśam) - according to (their) place; यथागृहम् (yathāgṛham) - according to (their) houses; प्रभूतभक्ष्यपेयाः (prabhūtabhakṣyapeyāḥ) - having abundant food and drink; ते (te) - they; सदारा (sadārā) - with (their) wives; यादवाः (yādavāḥ) - the Yādavas; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then at Prabhāsa they dwelt according to place, according to house; having abundant food and drink, they with wives, the Yādavas then.)
Then, at Prabhāsa, the Yādavas, along with their wives, stayed according to their designated places and houses, enjoying abundant food and drink. (16-4-9)
निविष्टांस्तान्निशम्याथ समुद्रान्ते स योगवित्। जगामामन्त्र्य तान्वीरानुद्धवोऽर्थविशारदः ॥१६-४-१०॥
niviṣṭāṁs tān niśamya ātha samudrānte sa yogavit। jagāma āmantrya tān vīrān uddhavo 'rthaviśāradaḥ ॥16-4-10॥
[निविष्टान् (niviṣṭān) - settled; seated; fixed; तान् (tān) - them; those; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; after hearing; आथ (ātha) - then; समुद्रान्ते (samudrānte) - at the seashore; at the end of the ocean; सः (saḥ) - he; योगवित् (yogavit) - knower of yoga; one skilled in yoga; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; departed; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having bid farewell; after addressing; तान् (tān) - them; those; वीरान् (vīrān) - warriors; heroes; उद्धवः (uddhavaḥ) - Uddhava; (proper noun); अर्थविशारदः (arthaviśāradaḥ) - wise in meaning; one skilled in purpose;]
(Having heard that those (men) were settled at the seashore, then he, knower of yoga, having bid farewell to those warriors, Uddhava, wise in purpose, departed.)
Then, having learned that those warriors were settled at the seashore, Uddhava—skilled in yoga and wisdom—took leave of them and departed. (16-4-10)
तं प्रस्थितं महात्मानमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिम्। जानन्विनाशं वृष्णीनां नैच्छद्वारयितुं हरिः ॥१६-४-११॥
taṃ prasthitaṃ mahātmānam abhivādya kṛtāñjalim। jānan vināśaṃ vṛṣṇīnām naicchad vārayituṃ hariḥ॥16-4-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; प्रस्थितं (prasthitam) - departed; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great-souled one; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; कृताञ्जलिम् (kṛtāñjalim) - with joined palms; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; विनाशं (vināśam) - destruction; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; नैच्छत् (naicchat) - did not wish; वारयितुम् (vārayitum) - to prevent; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Him departed, the great-souled one, having saluted, with joined palms, knowing the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis, did not wish to prevent, Hari.)
Hari, having saluted with joined palms that great-souled one who had departed, knowing the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis, did not wish to prevent it. (16-4-11)
ततः कालपरीतास्ते वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः। अपश्यन्नुद्धवं यान्तं तेजसावृत्य रोदसी ॥१६-४-१२॥
tataḥ kālaparītās te vṛṣṇy-andhaka-mahārathāḥ। apaśyann uddhavaṃ yāntaṃ tejasāvṛtya rodasī ॥16-4-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कालपरीताः (kālaparītāḥ) - overcome by Time; ते (te) - they; वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथाः (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-mahārathāḥ) - the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka clans; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - saw; उद्धवम् (uddhavam) - Uddhava; यान्तम् (yāntam) - going; तेजसा (tejasā) - by (his) radiance; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having enveloped; रोदसी (rodasī) - the heavens and the earth;]
(Then, overcome by Time, they, the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka clans, saw Uddhava going, having enveloped the heavens and the earth by (his) radiance.)
Then, those great warriors of the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka clans, overcome by Time, saw Uddhava departing, his radiance covering the heaven and the earth. (16-4-12)
ब्राह्मणार्थेषु यत्सिद्धमन्नं तेषां महात्मनाम्। तद्वानरेभ्यः प्रददुः सुरागन्धसमन्वितम् ॥१६-४-१३॥
brāhmaṇārtheṣu yat siddham annaṃ teṣāṃ mahātmanām। tad vānarebhyaḥ pradaduḥ surā-gandha-samanvitam ॥16-4-13॥
[ब्राह्मणार्थेषु (brāhmaṇārtheṣu) - for the sake of brāhmaṇas; यत् (yat) - which; सिद्धमन्नम् (siddham annam) - cooked food; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great-souled ones; तत् (tat) - that; वानरेभ्यः (vānarebhyaḥ) - to the monkeys; प्रददुः (pradaduḥ) - they gave; सुरागन्धसमन्वितम् (surā-gandha-samanvitam) - endowed with the fragrance of nectar;]
(For the sake of brāhmaṇas, which cooked food of the great-souled ones, that to the monkeys they gave, endowed with the fragrance of nectar.)
The cooked food intended for the brāhmaṇas, belonging to the great-souled ones and endowed with the fragrance of nectar, was given to the monkeys. (16-4-13)
ततस्तूर्यशताकीर्णं नटनर्तकसङ्कुलम्। प्रावर्तत महापानं प्रभासे तिग्मतेजसाम् ॥१६-४-१४॥
tatastūryaśatākīrṇaṃ naṭanartakasaṅkulam। prāvartata mahāpānaṃ prabhāse tigmatejasām ॥16-4-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तूर्यशताकीर्णं (tūryaśatākīrṇam) - covered by hundreds of musical instruments; नटनर्तकसङ्कुलम् (naṭanartakasaṅkulam) - crowded with actors and dancers; प्रावर्तत (prāvartata) - was commenced; महापानं (mahāpānam) - great drinking; प्रभासे (prabhāse) - in Prabhāsa; तिग्मतेजसाम् (tigmatejasām) - of those with fierce splendor;]
(Then, covered by hundreds of musical instruments, crowded with actors and dancers, the great drinking was commenced in Prabhāsa by those of fierce splendor.)

कृष्णस्य संनिधौ रामः सहितः कृतवर्मणा। अपिबद्युयुधानश्च गदो बभ्रुस्तथैव च ॥१६-४-१५॥
kṛṣṇasya saṁnidhau rāmaḥ sahitaḥ kṛtavarmaṇā। apibad yuyudhānaś ca gado babhrus tathaiva ca ॥16-4-15॥
[कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; सन्निधौ (saṁnidhau) - in the presence; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma (Balarāma); सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; कृतवर्मणा (kṛtavarmaṇā) - with Kṛtavarman; अपिबत् (apibat) - drank; युयुधानः (yuyudhānaḥ) - Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki); च (ca) - and; गदः (gadaḥ) - Gada; बभ्रुः (babhruḥ) - Babhrū; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and;]
(Of Kṛṣṇa in the presence, Rāma together with Kṛtavarman drank; Yuyudhāna and Gada, Babhrū likewise and.)

ततः परिषदो मध्ये युयुधानो मदोत्कटः। अब्रवीत्कृतवर्माणमवहस्यावमन्य च ॥१६-४-१६॥
tataḥ pariṣado madhye yuyudhāno madotkaṭaḥ। abravītkṛtavarmāṇam avahasya avamanya ca ॥16-4-16॥

(Then in the middle of the assembly, Yuyudhāna, intensely proud, spoke to Kṛtavarmā, having ridiculed and having insulted (him).)
Then, in the midst of the assembly, the proud Yuyudhāna spoke to Kṛtavarmā, after ridiculing and insulting him. (16-4-16)
कः क्षत्रियो मन्यमानः सुप्तान्हन्यान्मृतानिव। न तन्मृष्यन्ति हार्दिक्य यादवा यत्त्वया कृतम् ॥१६-४-१७॥
kaḥ kṣatriyo manyamānaḥ suptān hanyān mṛtān iva। na tan mṛṣyanti hārdikya yādavā yat tvayā kṛtam ॥16-4-17॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; मन्म्यमानः (manyamānaḥ) - considering himself (as such); सुप्तान् (suptān) - those who are sleeping; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; मृतान् (mṛtān) - the dead ones; इव (iva) - as if; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; मृष्यन्ति (mṛṣyanti) - endure; हार्दिक्य (hārdikya) - O son of Hṛdika; यादवाः (yādavāḥ) - Yādavas; यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done;]
(Who kṣatriya considering himself would kill those sleeping, as if (they were) dead? Not that endure, O son of Hṛdika, the Yādavas which by you has been done.)
What kṣatriya, considering himself as such, would kill those who are sleeping—as if they were already dead? The Yādavas, O son of Hṛdika, do not tolerate what you have done. (16-4-17)
इत्युक्ते युयुधानेन पूजयामास तद्वचः। प्रद्युम्नो रथिनां श्रेष्ठो हार्दिक्यमवमन्य च ॥१६-४-१८॥
ityukte yuyudhānena pūjayām āsa tadvacaḥ। pradyumno rathināṃ śreṣṭho hārdikyam avamanya ca ॥16-4-18॥

(Thus having been said by Yuyudhāna, he honored those words. Pradyumna, the best of charioteers, having disregarded Hārdikya also.)

ततः परमसङ्क्रुद्धः कृतवर्मा तमब्रवीत्। निर्दिशन्निव सावज्ञं तदा सव्येन पाणिना ॥१६-४-१९॥
tataḥ paramasaṅkruddhaḥ kṛtavarmā tam abravīt। nirdiśann iva sāvajñaṃ tadā savyena pāṇinā ॥16-4-19॥

भूरिश्रवाश्छिन्नबाहुर्युद्धे प्रायगतस्त्वया। वधेन सुनृशंसेन कथं वीरेण पातितः ॥१६-४-२०॥
bhūriśravāś chinnabāhur yuddhe prāyagatas tvayā। vadhena sunṛśaṃsena kathaṃ vīreṇa pātitaḥ ॥16-4-20॥

How was Bhūriśravāḥ, whose arm had been severed and who was near death in battle, slain with cruelty and cast down by you, a hero? (16-4-20)
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा केशवः परवीरहा। तिर्यक्सरोषया दृष्ट्या वीक्षां चक्रे स मन्युमान् ॥१६-४-२१॥
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā keśavaḥ paravīrahā। tiryak-saroṣayā dṛṣṭyā vīkṣāṃ cakre sa manyumān ॥16-4-21॥

(Thus of him speech having heard, Keśava, destroyer of enemy heroes, with sidelong and angry glance, look he made, he endowed with anger.)
Having heard his speech, Keśava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, filled with anger, cast a sidelong and wrathful glance. (16-4-21)
मणिः स्यमन्तकश्चैव यः स सत्राजितोऽभवत्। तां कथां स्मारयामास सात्यकिर्मधुसूदनम् ॥१६-४-२२॥
maṇiḥ syamantakaś caiva yaḥ sa satrājito 'bhavat। tāṃ kathāṃ smārayāmāsa sātyakir madhusūdanam ॥16-4-22॥

(The jewel Syamantaka—and that which became Satrājit's—that story Sātyaki reminded Madhusūdana.)
Sātyaki reminded Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) of the story concerning the jewel Syamantaka, which had belonged to Satrājit. (16-4-22)
तच्छ्रुत्वा केशवस्याङ्कमगमद्रुदती तदा। सत्यभामा प्रकुपिता कोपयन्ती जनार्दनम् ॥१६-४-२३॥
tacchrutvā keśavasyāṅkam agamad rudatī tadā। satyabhāmā prakupitā kopayantī janārdanam ॥16-4-23॥

(That having heard, to Keśava's lap she went, weeping, then; Satyabhāmā, angered, provoking Janārdana.)
Having heard that, Satyabhāmā, weeping, went to Keśava's lap; then, angered, she endeavored to provoke Janārdana. (16-4-23)
तत उत्थाय सक्रोधः सात्यकिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्। पञ्चानां द्रौपदेयानां धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनोः ॥१६-४-२४॥
tat utthāya sakrodhaḥ sātyakir vākyam abravīt. pañcānāṃ draupadeyānāṃ dhṛṣṭadyumna-śikhaṇḍinoḥ ॥16-4-24॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; सक्रोधः (sakrodhaḥ) - with anger; सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Sātyaki; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पञ्चानाम् (pañcānām) - of the five; द्रौपदेयानाम् (draupadeyānām) - sons of Draupadī; धृष्टद्युम्नशिखण्डिनोः (dhṛṣṭadyumna-śikhaṇḍinoḥ) - of Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍin;]
(Then, having risen with anger, Sātyaki said words regarding the five sons of Draupadī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and Śikhaṇḍin.)
Then Sātyaki, having risen in anger, spoke about the five sons of Draupadī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and Śikhaṇḍin. (16-4-24)
एष गच्छामि पदवीं सत्येन च तथा शपे। सौप्तिके ये च निहताः सुप्तानेन दुरात्मना ॥१६-४-२५॥
eṣa gacchāmi padavīṃ satyena ca tathā śape। sauptike ye ca nihatāḥ suptānena durātmanā ॥16-4-25॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; पदवीं (padavīṃ) - path; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so; शपे (śape) - I swear; सौप्तिके (sauptike) - in the Sauptika (night attack); ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; सुप्तान (suptān) - sleeping ones; एन (ena) - by this; दुरात्मना (durātmanā) - by the evil-souled;]
(This I go the path, by truth also thus I swear. In the Sauptika (night attack), who and slain, the sleeping ones by this evil-souled one.)
I now proceed on this path, and I swear by truth as well. In the Sauptika episode, those who were slain while sleeping by this evil-souled person. (16-4-25)
द्रोणपुत्रसहायेन पापेन कृतवर्मणा। समाप्तमायुरस्याद्य यशश्चापि सुमध्यमे ॥१६-४-२६॥
droṇaputrasahāyena pāpena kṛtavarmaṇā। samāptamāyurasyaādya yaśaścāpi sumadhyame ॥16-4-26॥
[द्रोणपुत्रसहायेन (droṇaputrasahāyena) - with the aid of the son of Droṇa; पापेन (pāpena) - by the wicked; कृतवर्मणा (kṛtavarmaṇā) - by Kṛtavarman; समाप्तमायुः (samāptamāyuḥ) - finished lifespan; अस्य (asya) - of him; आद्य (ādya) - today; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyame) - O fair (lady)/O one of lovely waist;]
(With the aid of Droṇa's son, by the wicked Kṛtavarman, his lifespan is finished today and fame also, O fair one.)
His lifespan and fame are ended today, with the help of Droṇa's son and the wicked Kṛtavarman, O fair-waisted one. (16-4-26)
इतीदमुक्त्वा खड्गेन केशवस्य समीपतः। अभिद्रुत्य शिरः क्रुद्धश्चिच्छेद कृतवर्मणः ॥१६-४-२७॥
itīdam uktvā khaḍgena keśavasya samīpataḥ। abhidrutya śiraḥ kruddhaś ciccheda kṛtavarmaṇaḥ ॥16-4-27॥
[इति (iti) - thus; इदम् (idam) - this; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; खड्गेन (khaḍgena) - with sword; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava; समीपतः (samīpataḥ) - from near; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed towards; शिरः (śiraḥ) - the head; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - he cut off; कृतवर्मणः (kṛtavarmaṇaḥ) - of Kṛtavarman;]
(Thus, having spoken this, with sword, from near Keśava, having rushed at, the head, the angry one, he cut off of Kṛtavarman.)
Having thus spoken, the angry one rushed up with a sword near Keśava and cut off the head of Kṛtavarman. (16-4-27)
तथान्यानपि निघ्नन्तं युयुधानं समन्ततः। अभ्यधावद्धृषीकेशो विनिवारयिषुस्तदा ॥१६-४-२८॥
tathā anyān api nighnantaṃ yuyudhānam samantataḥ। abhyadhāvat dhṛṣīkeśaḥ vinivārayiṣuḥ tadā ॥16-4-28॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; अपि (api) - also; निघ्नन्तम् (nighnantam) - striking; युयुधानम् (yuyudhānam) - Yuyudhāna (proper noun, name of Sātyaki); समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; अभ्यधावत् (abhyadhāvat) - approached swiftly; धृषीकेशः (dhṛṣīkeśaḥ) - Dhṛṣīkeśa (proper noun, name of Kṛṣṇa); विनिवारयिषुः (vinivārayiṣuḥ) - desiring to restrain; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, others also striking Yuyudhāna on all sides, Dhṛṣīkeśa then approached swiftly, desiring to restrain.)
Then, when others were also striking Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki) on all sides, Dhṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa) swiftly approached, wishing to restrain them. (16-4-28)
एकीभूतास्ततः सर्वे कालपर्यायचोदिताः। भोजान्धका महाराज शैनेयं पर्यवारयन् ॥१६-४-२९॥
ekībhūtās tataḥ sarve kālaparyāyacoditāḥ। bhojāndhakā mahārāja śaineyaṃ paryavārayan ॥16-4-29॥
[एकीभूताः (ekībhūtāḥ) - become united; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कालपर्यायचोदिताः (kālaparyāyacoditāḥ) - impelled by the course of time; भोजान्धकाः (bhojāndhakāḥ) - the Bhojas and Andhakas; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; शैनेयम् (śaineyam) - Saindhava (Satyaki); पर्यवारयन् (paryavārayan) - they surrounded;]
(Become united then all impelled by the course of time, the Bhojas and Andhakas, O great king, Saindhava (Satyaki) they surrounded.)
Then, O great king, all the Bhojas and Andhakas, having become united and urged by the course of time, surrounded Satyaki. (16-4-29)
तान्दृष्ट्वा पततस्तूर्णमभिक्रुद्धाञ्जनार्दनः। न चुक्रोध महातेजा जानन्कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१६-४-३०॥
tān dṛṣṭvā patataḥ tūrṇam abhi-kruddhān janārdanaḥ। na cukrodha mahā-tejā jñānan kālasya paryayam॥16-4-30॥
[तान् (tān) - those (them); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पततः (patataḥ) - falling; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अभिक्रुद्धान् (abhi-kruddhān) - greatly enraged (ones); जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (Krishna); न (na) - not; चुक्रोध (cukrodha) - became angry; महातेजा (mahā-tejā) - of great radiance; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्ययम् (paryayam) - revolution (change, cycle);]
(Having seen them, those falling quickly, greatly enraged, Janārdana, not became angry, of great radiance, knowing the revolution of time.)
Janārdana, of great radiance, seeing those greatly enraged ones falling quickly, did not become angry, knowing it was the course of time. (16-4-30)
ते तु पानमदाविष्टाश्चोदिताश्चैव मन्युना। युयुधानमथाभ्यघ्नन्नुच्छिष्टैर्भाजनैस्तदा ॥१६-४-३१॥
te tu pānamadāviṣṭāś coditāś caiva manyunā। yuyudhānam athābhyaghnan ucchiṣṭair bhājanais tadā ॥16-4-31॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; पानमदाविष्टाः (pānamadāviṣṭāḥ) - overcome by the intoxication of drink; चोदिताः (coditāḥ) - impelled; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मन्युना (manyunā) - by anger; युयुधानम् (yuyudhānam) - Yuyudhana; अथ (atha) - then; अभ्यघ्नन् (abhyaghnan) - attacked; उच्छिष्टैः (ucchiṣṭaiḥ) - with leftovers; भाजनैः (bhājanais) - with vessels; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(They but overcome by intoxication of drink, and impelled indeed by anger, Yuyudhana then attacked with leftovers with vessels, then.)
But they, overcome with drunkenness and impelled by anger, then attacked Yuyudhana with leftover vessels at that time. (16-4-31)
हन्यमाने तु शैनेये क्रुद्धो रुक्मिणिनन्दनः। तदन्तरमुपाधावन्मोक्षयिष्यञ्शिनेः सुतम् ॥१६-४-३२॥
hanyamāne tu śaineye kruddho rukmiṇinandanaḥ। tadantaram upādhāvan mokṣayiṣyañ śineḥ sutam ॥16-4-32॥
[हन्यमाने (hanyamāne) - being struck; (when he was being killed); तु (tu) - but; however; शैनेये (śaineye) - the son of Śini; (i.e., Sātyaki); क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angered; having become angry; रुक्मिणिनन्दनः (rukmiṇinandanaḥ) - the son of Rukmiṇī; (i.e., Kṛṣṇa); तदन्तरम् (tadantaram) - at that moment; then; उपाधावन् (upādhāvan) - ran up; approached quickly; मोक्षयिष्यन् (mokṣayiṣyan) - wishing to free; intending to release; शिनेः (śineḥ) - of Śini; (genitive singular); सुतम् (sutam) - son;]
(But as the son of Śini was being struck, the son of Rukmiṇī, angry, then ran up, wishing to release the son of Śini.)
But when Sātyaki (the son of Śini) was being slain, Kṛṣṇa (the son of Rukmiṇī), enraged, immediately rushed forward, intending to rescue the son of Śini. (16-4-32)
स भोजैः सह संयुक्तः सात्यकिश्चान्धकैः सह। बहुत्वान्निहतौ तत्र उभौ कृष्णस्य पश्यतः ॥१६-४-३३॥
sa bhojaiḥ saha saṁyuktaḥ sātyakiś ca andhakaiḥ saha. bahutvān nihatau tatra ubhau kṛṣṇasya paśyataḥ ॥16-4-33॥
[स (sa) - he; भोजैः (bhojaiḥ) - with the Bhojas; सह (saha) - together with; संयुक्तः (saṁyuktaḥ) - joined; सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Satyaki; च (ca) - and; अन्धकैः (andhakaiḥ) - with the Andhakas; सह (saha) - together with; बहुत्वान् (bahutvān) - being many; निहतौ (nihatau) - slain; तत्र (tatra) - there; उभौ (ubhau) - both; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - as he looked;]
(He, joined together with the Bhojas, and Satyaki together with the Andhakas, both being many, were slain there as Kṛṣṇa looked.)
He, along with the Bhojas, and Satyaki along with the Andhakas, both groups being many, were slain there in the presence of Kṛṣṇa. (16-4-33)
हतं दृष्ट्वा तु शैनेयं पुत्रं च यदुनन्दनः। एरकाणां तदा मुष्टिं कोपाज्जग्राह केशवः ॥१६-४-३४॥
hataṃ dṛṣṭvā tu śaineyaṃ putraṃ ca yadunandanaḥ। erakāṇāṃ tadā muṣṭiṃ kopājjagrāha keśavaḥ॥16-4-34॥
[हतं (hataṃ) - slain; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; शैनेयं (śaineyaṃ) - Satyaki (the son of Śini); पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; च (ca) - and; यदुनन्दनः (yadunandanaḥ) - the descendant of Yadu; एरकाणां (erakāṇāṃ) - of blades of grass; तदा (tadā) - then; मुष्टिं (muṣṭiṃ) - a handful; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; जग्राह (jagrāha) - (he) seized; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Having seen slain Satyaki, his son also, but the descendant of Yadu then seized a handful of blades of grass from anger, Keśava.)
But when Yadunandana (Kṛṣṇa) saw Satyaki and his own son slain, then Keśava, angered, seized a handful of blades of grass. (16-4-34)
तदभून्मुसलं घोरं वज्रकल्पमयोमयम्। जघान तेन कृष्णस्तान्येऽस्य प्रमुखतोऽभवन् ॥१६-४-३५॥
tad abhūn musalaṃ ghoraṃ vajra-kalpam ayomayam। jaghāna tena kṛṣṇas tān ye 'sya pramukhato 'bhavan॥16-4-35॥
[तत् (tad) (tad) - that; अभूत् (abhūt) (abhūt) - became; मुसलम् (musalam) (musalam) - pestle; घोरम् (ghoram) (ghoram) - terrible; वज्रकल्पम् (vajra-kalpam) (vajra-kalpam) - like a thunderbolt; अयोमयम् (ayomayam) (ayomayam) - made of iron; जघान (jaghāna) (jaghāna) - struck; तेन (tena) (tena) - with that; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; तान् (tān) (tān) - them; ये (ye) (ye) - who; अस्य (asya) (asya) - his; प्रमुखतः (pramukhataḥ) (pramukhataḥ) - in front; अभवन् (abhavan) (abhavan) - were;]
(That became a terrible pestle, like a thunderbolt, made of iron. With that, Kṛṣṇa struck them, who were in front of him.)
It became a dreadful pestle, like a thunderbolt, made of iron. With it, Kṛṣṇa struck down those who stood before him. (16-4-35)
ततोऽन्धकाश्च भोजाश्च शैनेया वृष्णयस्तथा। जघ्नुरन्योन्यमाक्रन्दे मुसलैः कालचोदिताः ॥१६-४-३६॥
tato'ndhakāś ca bhojāś ca śaineyā vṛṣṇayas tathā | jaghnur anyonyam ākrande musalaiḥ kālacoditāḥ ॥16-4-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्धकाः (andhakāḥ) - Andhakas; च (ca) - and; भोजाः (bhojāḥ) - Bhojas; च (ca) - and; शैनेयाः (śaineyāḥ) - descendants of Śini; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - Vṛṣṇis; तथा (tathā) - likewise; जघ्नुः (jaghnuḥ) - they slew; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - each other; आक्रन्दे (ākrande) - in outcry; मुसलैः (musalaiḥ) - with pestles; कालचोदिताः (kālacoditāḥ) - impelled by Time;]
(Then Andhakas and Bhojas and descendants of Śini and Vṛṣṇis likewise, they slew each other in outcry with pestles, impelled by Time.)
Then the Andhakas, Bhojas, descendants of Śini, and the Vṛṣṇis likewise, impelled by Time, slew one another with pestles amidst outcry. (16-4-36)
यस्तेषामेरकां कश्चिज्जग्राह रुषितो नृप। वज्रभूतेव सा राजन्नदृश्यत तदा विभो ॥१६-४-३७॥
yasteṣāmerakāṃ kaścijjagrāha ruṣito nṛpa। vajrabhūteva sā rājannadṛśyata tadā vibho ॥16-4-37॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; एरकां (erakāṃ) - the eraka grass; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; रुषितः (ruṣitaḥ) - angry; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; वज्रभूता (vajrabhūtā) - become like a thunderbolt; इव (iva) - as if; सा (sā) - she; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - appeared; तदा (tadā) - then; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(Who of them someone seized the eraka grass, angry, O king; become like a thunderbolt as if, she, O king, appeared then, O mighty one.)
O king, when some angry person among them seized the eraka grass, that grass then appeared as if it had become like a thunderbolt, O mighty one. (16-4-37)
तृणं च मुसलीभूतमपि तत्र व्यदृश्यत। ब्रह्मदण्डकृतं सर्वमिति तद्विद्धि पार्थिव ॥१६-४-३८॥
tṛṇaṃ ca musalībhūtam api tatra vyadṛśyata। brahmadaṇḍakṛtaṃ sarvam iti tad viddhi pārthiva ॥16-4-38॥
[तृणं (tṛṇam) - grass; च (ca) - and; मुसलीभूतम् (musalībhūtam) - having become a pestle; अपि (api) - also; तत्र (tatra) - there; व्यदृश्यत (vyadṛśyata) - was seen; ब्रह्मदण्डकृतं (brahmadaṇḍakṛtam) - made by the Brahma-staff; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Grass and having become a pestle also there was seen. Made by the Brahma-staff, all, thus, that know, O king.)
O king, know that all (of it)—even the grass that had turned into a pestle, which was seen there—was created by the Brahma-staff. (16-4-38)
आविध्याविध्य ते राजन्प्रक्षिपन्ति स्म यत्तृणम्। तद्वज्रभूतं मुसलं व्यदृश्यत तदा दृढम् ॥१६-४-३९॥
āvidhyāvidhya te rājan prakṣipanti sma yat tṛṇam। tad vajrabhūtaṃ musalaṃ vyadṛśyata tadā dṛḍham॥16-4-39॥
[आविध्याविध्य (āvidhyāvidhya) - having swung around repeatedly; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रक्षिपन्ति (prakṣipanti) - they threw; स्म (sma) - indeed; यत्तृणम् (yat tṛṇam) - that grass; तद्वज्रभूतं (tad vajrabhūtam) - that having become like a thunderbolt; मुसलम् (musalam) - club; व्यदृश्यत (vyadṛśyata) - was seen; तदा (tadā) - at that time; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firm;]
(Having swung around repeatedly, they, O king, indeed threw that grass. That grass, having become like a thunderbolt, was seen then as a firm club.)

पतङ्गा इव चाग्नौ ते न्यपतन्कुकुरान्धकाः। नासीत्पलायने बुद्धिर्वध्यमानस्य कस्यचित् ॥१६-४-४१॥

(Like moths into the fire, those Kukuras and Andhakas fell down. There was not thought of fleeing in anyone being slain.)

(Having seen the mace and one lying, exceedingly filled with anger, he, the holder of the Śārṅga, discus, and mace, then did utterly.)

(Him slaying, of great brilliance Babhru, conqueror of enemy cities, Dāruka and indeed to the descendant of Daśārha, the two said: what, hear that.)
When he was slaying, the mighty Babhru, conqueror of enemy cities, and Dāruka, both spoke these words to the descendant of Daśārha; hear what they said. (16-4-45)
भगवन्संहृतं सर्वं त्वया भूयिष्ठमच्युत। रामस्य पदमन्विच्छ तत्र गच्छाम यत्र सः ॥१६-४-४६॥
bhagavansaṁhṛtaṁ sarvaṁ tvayā bhūyiṣṭhamacyuta। rāmasya padamanviccha tatra gacchāma yatra saḥ ॥16-4-46॥
