tato yayur dārukaḥ keśavaś ca; babhruś ca rāmasya padaṁ patantaḥ. athāpaśyan rāmam anantavīryaṁ; vṛkṣe sthitaṁ cintayānaṁ vivikte ॥16-5-1॥

(Then Dāruka, Keśava and Babhru went, following the path of Rāma. Then, they saw Rāma of endless valor, standing on a tree, contemplating in solitude.)
Then Dāruka, Keśava, and Babhru went, following the path of Rāma, and then they saw Rāma of infinite valor, standing on a tree, lost in contemplation in solitude. (16-5-1)
ततः समासाद्य महानुभावः; कृष्णस्तदा दारुकमन्वशासत्। गत्वा कुरूञ्शीघ्रमिमं महान्तं; पार्थाय शंसस्व वधं यदूनाम् ॥१६-५-२॥

Then, the great-souled Kṛṣṇa, having approached, instructed Dāruka: "Go quickly to the Kurus and announce this great destruction of the Yādavas to Pārtha (Arjuna)." (16-5-2)
ततोऽर्जुनः क्षिप्रमिहोपयातु; श्रुत्वा मृतान्यादवान्ब्रह्मशापात्। इत्येवमुक्तः स ययौ रथेन; कुरूंस्तदा दारुको नष्टचेताः ॥१६-५-३॥
tato'rjunaḥ kṣipramihopayātu; śrutvā mṛtānyādavānbrahmaśāpāt. ityevamuktaḥ sa yayau rathena; kurūṃstadā dāruko naṣṭacetāḥ ॥16-5-3॥

(Then Arjuna should quickly arrive here; having heard the Yadavas were dead from the curse of Brahma. Thus having been told, he departed by chariot to the Kurus then, Dāruka with lost consciousness.)
Then Arjuna should quickly come here; after hearing that the Yadavas had died because of the curse of Brahma. Thus addressed, Dāruka, his mind distraught, went by chariot to the Kurus at that time. (16-5-3)
ततो गते दारुके केशवोऽथ; दृष्ट्वान्तिके बभ्रुमुवाच वाक्यम्। स्त्रियो भवान्रक्षतु यातु शीघ्रं; नैता हिंस्युर्दस्यवो वित्तलोभात् ॥१६-५-४॥
tato gate dāruke keśavo'tha; dṛṣṭvāntike babhrumuvāca vākyam. striyo bhavānrakṣatu yātu śīghraṃ; naitā hiṃsyurdasyavo vittalobhāt ॥16-5-4॥

(Then, when Dāruka had gone, Keśava, having seen Babhrū nearby, spoke a speech: "Let you protect the women; let you go quickly; let not these (women) be harmed by the robbers from greed for wealth." (16-5-4))
After Dāruka had left, Keśava saw Babhrū nearby and spoke: "Please protect the women and depart quickly; let not these women be harmed by the robbers out of greed for wealth." (16-5-4)
स प्रस्थितः केशवेनानुशिष्टो; मदातुरो ज्ञातिवधार्दितश्च। तं वै यान्तं संनिधौ केशवस्य; त्वरन्तमेकं सहसैव बभ्रुम् ॥ ब्रह्मानुशप्तमवधीन्महद्वै; कूटोन्मुक्तं मुसलं लुब्धकस्य ॥१६-५-५॥
sa prasthitaḥ keśavenānuśiṣṭo; madāturo jñātivadhārditaś ca. taṃ vai yāntaṃ saṃnidhau keśavasya; tvarantam ekaṃ sahasaiva babhrum ॥ brahmānuśaptam avadhīn mahad vai; kūṭonmuktaṃ musalaṃ lubdhakasya ॥16-5-5॥
[स (sa) - he; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - having departed; केशवेन (keśavena) - by Keśava; अनुशिष्टः (anuśiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; मदातुरः (madāturaḥ) - afflicted with intoxication; ज्ञातिवधार्दितः (jñātivadhārditaḥ) - distressed by the slaughter of his kinsmen; च (ca) - and; तं (tam) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; यान्तं (yāntam) - going; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava; त्वरन्तम् (tvarantam) - hastening; एकम् (ekam) - one; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; एव (eva) - indeed; बभ्रुम् (babhrum) - a babhru (mongoose); ब्रह्मानुशप्तम् (brahmānuśaptam) - cursed by Brahmā; अवधीन् (avadhīn) - killed; महद् (mahad) - great; वै (vai) - indeed; कूटोनमुख्तम् (kūṭonmuktam) - released from the top of the club; मुसलम् (musalam) - the pestle (club); लुब्धकस्य (lubdhakasya) - of the hunter.;]
(He, having departed, instructed by Keśava, afflicted with intoxication and distressed by the slaughter of his kinsmen; him indeed, as he was going in the presence of Keśava, hastening, they suddenly saw one babhru (mongoose). Cursed by Brahmā, he (the babhru) was killed, a great (being), by the pestle (club) released from the top, belonging to the hunter. (16-5-5))
He, instructed by Keśava, departed, afflicted by intoxication and grief from the slaughter of his kin. As he went in Keśava’s presence, hastening, they suddenly saw a babhru (mongoose). Cursed by Brahmā, the great babhru was killed by the club released from the top by the hunter. (16-5-5)
ततो दृष्ट्वा निहतं बभ्रुमाह; कृष्णो वाक्यं भ्रातरमग्रजं तु। इहैव त्वं मां प्रतीक्षस्व राम; यावत्स्त्रियो ज्ञातिवशाः करोमि ॥१६-५-६॥
tato dṛṣṭvā nihataṃ babhrum āha; kṛṣṇo vākyaṃ bhrātaram agrajaṃ tu. ihaiva tvaṃ māṃ pratīkṣasva rāma; yāvat striyo jñātivaśāḥ karomi ॥16-5-6॥

(Then, having seen Babhrū slain, Kṛṣṇa spoke words to his elder brother: "Right here you wait for me, Rāma, until I render the women subject to the relatives." (16-5-6))
Then, upon seeing Babhrū slain, Kṛṣṇa said to his elder brother: "Wait for me here, Rāma, until I have placed the women under the care of their relatives." (16-5-6)
ततः पुरीं द्वारवतीं प्रविश्य; जनार्दनः पितरं प्राह वाक्यम्। स्त्रियो भवान्रक्षतु नः समग्रा; धनञ्जयस्यागमनं प्रतीक्षन् ॥ रामो वनान्ते प्रतिपालयन्मा; मास्तेऽद्याहं तेन समागमिष्ये ॥१६-५-७॥
tataḥ purīṁ dvāravatīṁ praviśya; janārdanaḥ pitaraṁ prāha vākyam। striyo bhavān rakṣatu naḥ samagrā; dhanañjayasya āgamanam pratīkṣan ॥ rāmo vanānte pratipālayan mā; mā aste adya ahaṁ tena samāgamiṣye ॥16-5-7॥

(Then, having entered the city Dvāravatī, Janārdana said words to his father: “You should protect all our women, waiting for the arrival of Dhanañjaya. Rāma is at the forest edge awaiting; let him not remain (there). Today, I shall meet with him.” (16-5-7))
Then, after entering the city of Dvāravatī, Janārdana spoke to his father: “Please protect all our women, who are awaiting Dhanañjaya’s arrival. Rāma is waiting at the edge of the forest; let him not remain there. I will meet him today.” (16-5-7)
दृष्टं मयेदं निधनं यदूनां; राज्ञां च पूर्वं कुरुपुङ्गवानाम्। नाहं विना यदुभिर्यादवानां; पुरीमिमां द्रष्टुमिहाद्य शक्तः ॥१६-५-८॥
dṛṣṭaṃ mayedaṃ nidhanaṃ yadūnāṃ; rājñāṃ ca pūrvaṃ kurupuṅgavānām। nāhaṃ vinā yadubhiryādavānāṃ; purīmimāṃ draṣṭumihādya śaktaḥ ॥16-5-8॥

(Seen by me this destruction of the Yādavas; and earlier of the kings, of the foremost among the Kurus. Not I, without the Yādavas, of the Yādavas; the city this to see here today am able.)
I have seen this destruction of the Yādavas, and earlier, of the kings who were foremost among the Kurus. Without the Yādavas, I am not able to see this city of the Yādavas here today. (16-5-8)
तपश्चरिष्यामि निबोध तन्मे; रामेण सार्धं वनमभ्युपेत्य। इतीदमुक्त्वा शिरसास्य पादौ; संस्पृश्य कृष्णस्त्वरितो जगाम ॥१६-५-९॥
tapaś cariṣyāmi nibodha tan me; rāmeṇa sārdhaṃ vanam abhyupetya. itīdam uktvā śirasā asya pādau; saṃspṛśya kṛṣṇaḥ tvarito jagāma ॥16-5-9॥

(Austerity I shall perform, know that of me; with Rāma together, having gone to the forest. Thus having said this, with his head his feet having touched, Kṛṣṇa quickly went.)
“Know that I shall perform austerities; having gone to the forest together with Rāma.” After saying this, Kṛṣṇa touched his (Rāma's) feet with his head and departed quickly. (16-5-9)
ततो महान्निनदः प्रादुरासी; त्सस्त्रीकुमारस्य पुरस्य तस्य। अथाब्रवीत्केशवः संनिवर्त्य; शब्दं श्रुत्वा योषितां क्रोशतीनाम् ॥१६-५-१०॥
tato mahān ninadaḥ prādurāsī; tsa-strīkumārasya purasya tasya. athābravīt keśavaḥ saṃnivartya; śabdaṃ śrutvā yoṣitāṃ krośatīnām ॥16-5-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; महान् (mahān) - great; निनदः (ninadaḥ) - roar; प्रादुरासी (prādurāsī) - arose; त्सस्त्रीकुमारस्य (tsa-strīkumārasya) - of the women and boys; पुरस्य (purasya) - of the city; तस्य (tasya) - of that; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava; संनिवर्त्य (saṃnivartya) - having turned back; शब्दं (śabdam) - sound; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; योषिताम् (yoṣitām) - of the women; क्रोशतीनाम् (krośatīnām) - crying;]
(From then a great roar arose; of the women and boys of that city. Then Keśava said, having turned back; having heard the sound of women crying.)

पुरीमिमामेष्यति सव्यसाची; स वो दुःखान्मोचयिता नराग्र्यः। ततो गत्वा केशवस्तं ददर्श; रामं वने स्थितमेकं विविक्ते ॥१६-५-११॥

(Savyasacin will go to this city; he, the foremost among men, will be the liberator for you from suffering. Then, having gone, Keshava saw him—Rama—situated alone in isolation in the forest.)
Savyasacin (Arjuna) will come to this city; he, the foremost of men, will deliver you from your suffering. Then, after going there, Keshava (Krishna) saw Rama sitting alone in seclusion in the forest. (16-5-11)
अथापश्ययोगयुक्तस्य तस्य; नागं मुखान्निःसरन्तं महान्तम्। श्वेतं ययौ स ततः प्रेक्ष्यमाणो; महार्णवो येन महानुभावः ॥१६-५-१२॥
athāpaśyayoga-yuktasya tasya; nāgaṁ mukhānnissarantaṁ mahāntam. śvetaṁ yayau sa tataḥ prekṣyamāṇo; mahārṇavo yena mahānubhāvaḥ ॥16-5-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपश्य (apaśya) - (he) saw; योगयुक्तस्य (yoga-yuktasya) - engaged in yoga; तस्य (tasya) - of him; नागं (nāgaṁ) - serpent; मुखात् (mukhāt) - from (his) mouth; निःसरन्तं (niḥsarantaṁ) - emerging; महान्तम् (mahāntam) - great; श्वेतं (śvetam) - white; ययौ (yayau) - went; स (sa) - he; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; प्रेक्ष्यमाणः (prekṣyamāṇaḥ) - looking; महार्णवः (mahārṇavaḥ) - great ocean; येन (yena) - by whom; महानुभावः (mahānubhāvaḥ) - the great-souled one;]
(Then (he) saw of him engaged in yoga; a great serpent emerging from his mouth. White, he went from there looking, the great ocean by whom the great-souled one.)
Then, as he watched, he saw from the mouth of that one engaged in yoga a great white serpent emerging. The great-souled one (the serpent) went from there to the great ocean. (16-5-12)
सहस्रशीर्षः पर्वताभोगवर्ष्मा; रक्ताननः स्वां तनुं तां विमुच्य। सम्यक्च तं सागरः प्रत्यगृह्णा; न्नागा दिव्याः सरितश्चैव पुण्याः ॥१६-५-१३॥
sahasraśīrṣaḥ parvatābhogavarṣmā; raktānanaḥ svāṃ tanuṃ tāṃ vimucya। samyak ca taṃ sāgaraḥ pratyagṛhṇāt nāgā divyāḥ saritaś caiva puṇyāḥ ॥16-5-13॥
[सहस्रशीर्षः (sahasraśīrṣaḥ) - thousand-headed; पर्वताभोगवर्ष्मा (parvatābhogavarṣmā) - having the body massive as a mountain; रक्ताननः (raktānanaḥ) - red-faced; स्वां (svām) - his own; तनुं (tanuṃ) - body; तां (tāṃ) - that; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having cast off; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - him; सागरः (sāgaraḥ) - ocean; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - received; नागाः (nāgāḥ) - serpents; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पुण्याः (puṇyāḥ) - pure;]
(Thousand-headed, having the body massive as a mountain, red-faced, his own body that having cast off; properly and him the ocean received; serpents divine and rivers indeed pure.)
The thousand-headed being, with a body as vast as a mountain and red face, having cast off his own form; then the ocean, as well as the divine serpents and the pure rivers, properly received him. (16-5-13)
कर्कोटको वासुकिस्तक्षकश्च; पृथुश्रवा वरुणः कुञ्जरश्च। मिश्री शङ्खः कुमुदः पुण्डरीक; स्तथा नागो धृतराष्ट्रो महात्मा ॥१६-५-१४॥
karkoṭako vāsukistakṣakaśca; pṛthuśravā varuṇaḥ kuñjaraśca. miśrī śaṅkhaḥ kumudaḥ puṇḍarīka; stathā nāgo dhṛtarāṣṭro mahātmā ॥16-5-14॥

(Then, when the brother had gone, Vasudeva, knowing all paths with divine sight, in the empty forest wandering and meditating, on the ground then he lay down, of supreme splendor.)
Then, after his brother had departed, Vasudeva, who knew all paths by divine vision, wandered meditating in the empty forest; then he of supreme splendor lay down upon the ground. (16-5-16)
सर्वं हि तेन प्राक्तदा वित्तमासी; द्गान्धार्या यद्वाक्यमुक्तः स पूर्वम्। दुर्वाससा पायसोच्छिष्टलिप्ते; यच्चाप्युक्तं तच्च सस्मार कृष्णः ॥१६-५-१७॥
sarvaṁ hi tena prāktadā vittamāsī; d-gāndhāryā yad-vākyam-uktaḥ sa pūrvam। durvāsasā pāyasocchiṣṭalipte; yac-cāpy-uktaṁ tac-ca sasmāra kṛṣṇaḥ ॥16-5-17॥

(He, contemplating the destruction of the Andhaka and Vṛṣṇi, and indeed the annihilation of the Kuru, the greatly powerful one considered from that the time of departure; thereafter, he performed the restriction of the senses.)
He, the greatly powerful one, reflecting on the destruction of the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis, as well as the annihilation of the Kurus, then regarded it as the time for departure; and thereafter, he restrained his senses. (16-5-18)
स संनिरुद्धेन्द्रियवाङ्मनास्तु; शिश्ये महायोगमुपेत्य कृष्णः। जराथ तं देशमुपाजगाम; लुब्धस्तदानीं मृगलिप्सुरुग्रः ॥१६-५-१९॥
sa saṁniruddhendriyavāṅmanāstu; śiśye mahāyogamupetya kṛṣṇaḥ. jarātha taṁ deśamupājagāma; lubdhas tadānīṁ mṛgalipsur ugraḥ ॥16-5-19॥

(He, with completely restrained senses, speech, and mind, but, lay down, having undertaken great meditation, Kṛṣṇa. By Jarā, him, place, came near. The hunter then, desiring a deer, fierce.)
Kṛṣṇa, having entered into great meditation with his senses, speech, and mind completely restrained, lay down. At that time, the fierce hunter Jarā, desiring a deer, came near that place. (16-5-19)
स केशवं योगयुक्तं शयानं; मृगाशङ्की लुब्धकः सायकेन। जराविध्यत्पादतले त्वरावां; स्तं चाभितस्तज्जिघृक्षुर्जगाम ॥ अथापश्यत्पुरुषं योगयुक्तं; पीताम्बरं लुब्धकोऽनेकबाहुम् ॥१६-५-२०॥
sa keśavaṁ yogayuktaṁ śayānaṁ; mṛgaśaṅkī lubdhakaḥ sāyakena. jarāvidhyatpādatale tvarāvāṁ; staṁ cābhitastajjighṛkṣur jagāma ॥ athāpaśyat puruṣaṁ yogayuktaṁ; pītāmbaraṁ lubdhako'nekabāhum ॥16-5-20॥
[स (sa) - he; केशवं (keśavam) - Keśava (Krishna); योगयुक्तं (yogayuktam) - absorbed in yoga; शयानं (śayānam) - lying (down); मृगशङ्की (mṛgaśaṅkī) - mistaking for a deer; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; सायकेन (sāyakena) - with an arrow; जरा (jarā) - Jarā (name of the hunter, or 'old age'); अविध्यत् (avidhyat) - pierced; पादतले (pādatale) - at the sole of the foot; त्वरावां (tvarāvām) - swiftly; स्तं (staṁ) - him; च (ca) - and; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - towards; तज्जिघृक्षुः (tajjighṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to take that (prey); जगाम (jagāma) - went; अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - man; योगयुक्तं (yogayuktam) - absorbed in yoga; पीताम्बरं (pītāmbaram) - one wearing a yellow garment; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; अनेकबाहुम् (anekabāhum) - with many arms;]
(He, Keśava, absorbed in yoga, lying (down); mistaking (him) for a deer, the hunter with an arrow; Jarā pierced (him) at the sole of the foot swiftly; him also towards, desiring to take that (prey), (the hunter) went. Then he saw (that) man absorbed in yoga, wearing a yellow garment, the hunter (saw him) with many arms. (16-5-20))
Keśava, who was lying down absorbed in yoga, was mistaken for a deer by the hunter. The hunter Jarā swiftly pierced the sole of his foot with an arrow and, wishing to claim him, approached him. Then the hunter saw that the man, absorbed in yoga and clothed in yellow, had many arms. (16-5-20)
मत्वात्मानमपराद्धं स तस्य; जग्राह पादौ शिरसा चार्तरूपः। आश्वासयत्तं महात्मा तदानीं; गच्छन्नूर्ध्वं रोदसी व्याप्य लक्ष्म्या ॥१६-५-२१॥
matvā ātmānam aparāddhaṃ sa tasya; jagrāha pādau śirasā ca ārta-rūpaḥ। āśvāsayat taṃ mahātmā tadānīṃ; gacchan ūrdhvaṃ rodasī vyāpya lakṣmyā ॥16-5-21॥

(Having known himself as having sinned, he, of him, took the feet with his head and (being) in the form of one in distress. The great-souled one comforted him at that time, departing upward, having pervaded heaven and earth with splendor.)
Realizing himself to be at fault, he took the other's feet with his head, appearing in distress. At that time, the great-souled one comforted him and, ascending upward, pervaded heaven and earth with his splendor. (16-5-21)
दिवं प्राप्तं वासवोऽथाश्विनौ च; रुद्रादित्या वसवश्चाथ विश्वे। प्रत्युद्ययुर्मुनयश्चापि सिद्धा; गन्धर्वमुख्याश्च सहाप्सरोभिः ॥१६-५-२२॥
divaṃ prāptaṃ vāsavo’thāśvinau ca; rudrādityā vasavaścātha viśve. pratyudyayurmunayaścāpi siddhā; gandharvamukhyāśca sahāpsarobhiḥ ॥16-5-22॥

ततो राजन्भगवानुग्रतेजा; नारायणः प्रभवश्चाव्ययश्च। योगाचार्यो रोदसी व्याप्य लक्ष्म्या; स्थानं प्राप स्वं महात्माप्रमेयम् ॥१६-५-२३॥

(Then, O King, the blessed one of fierce energy, Nārāyaṇa, the origin and the imperishable; the teacher of yoga, having pervaded heaven and earth with splendor, attained his own abode, the great soul, immeasurable.)

(Then by the gods, by sages also, Kṛṣṇa, having gathered with the cāraṇas and indeed, O king, with the foremost of gandharvas, with apsarases, with excellent ones, with siddhas, with sādhyas and with those bowing, being worshipped.)
