(Dāruka also, having gone to the Kurus, after seeing the Pāṇḍavas, the great chariot-warriors, reported (that) in the Mausala (battle) the Vṛṣṇis were destroyed by each other.)

(Having heard the Vṛṣṇis destroyed together with the Bhojas, Kukuras, and Andhakas, the Pāṇḍavas, afflicted with grief, became fear-stricken in mind.)
When the Pāṇḍavas heard that the Vṛṣṇis, along with the Bhojas, Kukuras, and Andhakas, had been destroyed, they were stricken with grief and their minds became filled with fear. (16-6-2)
ततोऽर्जुनस्तानामन्त्र्य केशवस्य प्रियः सखा। प्रययौ मातुलं द्रष्टुं नेदमस्तीति चाब्रवीत् ॥१६-६-३॥
tato'ṛjunas tān āmantrya keśavasya priyaḥ sakhā। prayayau mātulaṃ draṣṭuṃ nedam astīti cābravīt ॥16-6-3॥

(Then Arjuna, addressing them, Keśava's dear friend, went to (his) uncle to see (him), and said: 'This is not so.')

स वृष्णिनिलयं गत्वा दारुकेण सह प्रभो। ददर्श द्वारकां वीरो मृतनाथामिव स्त्रियम् ॥१६-६-४॥
sa vṛṣṇinilayaṃ gatvā dārukeṇa saha prabho| dadarśa dvārakāṃ vīro mṛtanāthām iva striyam ॥16-6-4॥

(He, having gone to the abode of the Vṛṣṇis together with Dāruka, O lord, the hero saw Dvārakā, as if a woman whose husband is dead.)
Having gone to the abode of the Vṛṣṇis with Dāruka, O lord, the hero saw Dvārakā resembling a woman whose husband has died. (16-6-4)
याः स्म ता लोकनाथेन नाथवत्यः पुराभवन्। तास्त्वनाथास्तदा नाथं पार्थं दृष्ट्वा विचुक्रुशुः ॥१६-६-५॥

Those who formerly had a protector in the lord of the world, indeed, those became without a protector; then, upon seeing their protector Arjuna, they wailed aloud. (16-6-5)
षोडशस्त्रीसहस्राणि वासुदेवपरिग्रहः। तासामासीन्महान्नादो दृष्ट्वैवार्जुनमागतम् ॥१६-६-६॥
ṣoḍaśastrīsahasrāṇi vāsudevaparigrahaḥ। tāsāmāsīn mahānnādo dṛṣṭvaivārjunamāgatam ॥16-6-6॥
[षोडशस्त्रीसहस्राणि (ṣoḍaśa-strī-sahasrāṇi) - sixteen thousand women; वासुदेवपरिग्रहः (vāsudeva-parigrahaḥ) - Vāsudeva's consort; तासाम् (tāsām) - of them; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; महान् (mahān) - great; नादः (nādaḥ) - sound; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived;]
(Sixteen thousand women, Vāsudeva's consorts; of them there was great sound, having seen indeed Arjuna arrived.)
When Arjuna arrived, there arose a great sound from the sixteen thousand consorts of Vāsudeva. (16-6-6)
तास्तु दृष्ट्वैव कौरव्यो बाष्पेण पिहितोऽर्जुनः। हीनाः कृष्णेन पुत्रैश्च नाशकत्सोऽभिवीक्षितुम् ॥१६-६-७॥
tāstu dṛṣṭvaiva kauravyo bāṣpeṇa pihito'rjunaḥ। hīnāḥ kṛṣṇena putraiśca nāśakatsobhi-vīkṣitum ॥16-6-7॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - those (women); तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - just; कौरव्यो (kauravyo) - the descendant of Kuru (Arjuna); बाष्पेण (bāṣpeṇa) - with tears; पिहितः (pihitaḥ) - covered; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - bereft; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by sons; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अशकत् (aśakat) - was able; सः (saḥ) - he; अभिवीक्षितुम् (abhivīkṣitum) - to gaze at;]
(But having just seen those women, the descendant of Kuru (Arjuna), with eyes covered by tears, bereft by Kṛṣṇa and sons, he was not able to gaze at (them).)
But upon seeing those women, Arjuna, the Kuru prince, whose eyes were covered with tears due to the loss of Kṛṣṇa and his sons, was unable to look at them. (16-6-7)
तां स वृष्ण्यन्धकजलां हयमीनां रथोडुपाम्। वादित्ररथघोषौघां वेश्मतीर्थमहाग्रहाम् ॥१६-६-८॥
tāṃ sa vṛṣṇy-andhaka-jalāṃ haya-mīnām rathoḍupām | vāditra-ratha-ghoṣaughāṃ veśma-tīrtha-mahāgrahām ||16-6-8||

(Her, he (saw as) having the waters of Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, horses and fishes, chariots and stars, filled with waves of instrument and chariot sounds, with great houses, sacred fords, and mighty strongholds.)
He saw her as adorned with the waters of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, dotted with horses, ships, chariots and lamps, resounding with music and the tumult of chariots, and graced with great mansions, sacred fords, and powerful strongholds. (16-6-8)
रत्नशैवलसङ्घाटां वज्रप्राकारमालिनीम्। रथ्यास्रोतोजलावर्तां चत्वरस्तिमितह्रदाम् ॥१६-६-९॥
ratnaśaivala-saṅghāṭāṃ vajra-prākāra-mālinīm। rathyā-srotaḥ-jala-āvartāṃ catvara-stimita-hradām ॥16-6-9॥
[रत्नशैवलसङ्घाटाम् (ratnaśaivala-saṅghāṭām) - having clusters of gems and aquatic plants; वज्रप्राकारमालिनीम् (vajra-prākāra-mālinīm) - adorned with garlands of fortress walls of diamond; रथ्यास्रोतोजलावर्ताम् (rathyā-srotaḥ-jala-āvartām) - having whirlpools of water from the stream of streets; चत्वरस्तिमितह्रदाम् (catvara-stimita-hradām) - having pools made still in crossing places (squares or crossroads);]

रामकृष्णमहाग्राहां द्वारकासरितं तदा। कालपाशग्रहां घोरां नदीं वैतरणीमिव ॥१६-६-१०॥
rāmakṛṣṇamahāgrāhāṃ dvārakāsaritaṃ tadā। kālapāśagrahāṃ ghorāṃ nadīṃ vaitaraṇīmiva ॥16-6-10॥

The river of Dvārakā, which had Rāma and Kṛṣṇa as its great crocodiles, was then, seized by the noose of Time and became like the terrifying river Vaitaraṇī. (16-6-10)
तां ददर्शार्जुनो धीमान्विहीनां वृष्णिपुङ्गवैः। गतश्रियं निरानन्दां पद्मिनीं शिशिरे यथा ॥१६-६-११॥
tāṃ dadarśārjuno dhīmān vihīnāṃ vṛṣṇipuṅgavaiḥ। gataśriyaṃ nirānandāṃ padminīṃ śiśire yathā ॥16-6-11॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; धीमान् (dhīmān) - intelligent; विहीनां (vihīnāṃ) - deprived; वृष्णिपुङ्गवैः (vṛṣṇipuṅgavaiḥ) - by the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis; गतश्रियं (gataśriyam) - lost prosperity; निरानन्दां (nirānandām) - devoid of joy; पद्मिनीं (padminīm) - lotus-lake; शिशिरे (śiśire) - in winter; यथा (yathā) - like;]
(Her saw Arjuna intelligent, deprived by the foremost of the Vṛṣṇis, lost prosperity, devoid of joy, lotus-lake in winter like.)

तां दृष्ट्वा द्वारकां पार्थस्ताश्च कृष्णस्य योषितः। सस्वनं बाष्पमुत्सृज्य निपपात महीतले ॥१६-६-१२॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā dvārakāṃ pārthas tāś ca kṛṣṇasya yoṣitaḥ। sasvanaṃ bāṣpam utsṛjya nipapāta mahītale ॥16-6-12॥

(Having seen that Dvaraka and those wives of Krishna, Pārtha, having released tears with sound, fell down on the ground.)
When Pārtha (Arjuna) saw that city of Dvaraka and Krishna's wives, he let out a loud cry, shed tears, and fell to the ground. (16-6-12)
सात्राजिती ततः सत्या रुक्मिणी च विशां पते। अभिपत्य प्ररुरुदुः परिवार्य धनञ्जयम् ॥१६-६-१३॥
sātrājitī tataḥ satyā rukmiṇī ca viśāṃ pate। abhipatya praruruduḥ parivārya dhanañjayam ॥16-6-13॥

Then Sātrājitī, Satyā, and Rukmiṇī, O lord of men, surrounded Arjuna and, approaching him, began to weep greatly. (16-6-13)
ततस्ताः काञ्चने पीठे समुत्थायोपवेश्य च। अब्रुवन्त्यो महात्मानं परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥१६-६-१४॥
tatas tāḥ kāñcane pīṭhe samutthāya upaveśya ca। abruvan tyo mahātmānaṃ parivārya upatast hire ॥16-6-14॥

(Then they, on the golden seat, having arisen and having made (him) sit, and having surrounded the high-souled one, they spoke and attended.)
Then, having arisen, those women placed the great-souled one on a golden seat, surrounded him, spoke, and attended upon him. (16-6-14)
ततः संस्तूय गोविन्दं कथयित्वा च पाण्डवः। आश्वास्य ताः स्त्रियश्चापि मातुलं द्रष्टुमभ्यगात् ॥१६-६-१५॥
tataḥ saṁstūya govindaṁ kathayitvā ca pāṇḍavaḥ। āśvāsya tāḥ striyaś cāpi mātulaṁ draṣṭum abhyagāt॥16-6-15॥
