Vaiśampāyana said.
तं शयानं महात्मानं वीरमानकदुन्दुभिम्। पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तं ददर्श कुरुपुङ्गवः ॥१६-७-१॥
taṁ śayānaṁ mahātmānaṁ vīram ānakadundubhim | putraśokābhisantaptaṁ dadarśa kurupuṅgavaḥ ॥16-7-1॥

तस्याश्रुपरिपूर्णाक्षो व्यूढोरस्को महाभुजः। आर्तस्यार्ततरः पार्थः पादौ जग्राह भारत ॥१६-७-२॥

समालिङ्ग्यार्जुनं वृद्धः स भुजाभ्यां महाभुजः। रुदन्पुत्रान्स्मरन्सर्वान्विललाप सुविह्वलः ॥ भ्रातॄन्पुत्रांश्च पौत्रांश्च दौहित्रांश्च सखीनपि ॥१६-७-३॥
samāliṅgyārjunaṃ vṛddhaḥ sa bhujābhyāṃ mahābhujaḥ। rudan putrān smaran sarvān vilalāpa suvihvalaḥ॥ bhrātṝn putrāṃś ca pautrāṃś ca dauhitrāṃś ca sakhīn api॥16-7-3॥

Having embraced Arjuna with his arms, the aged, mighty-armed one, weeping and remembering all his sons, lamented greatly in distress; he mourned also for his brothers, sons, grandsons, grandsons through his daughters, and friends. (16-7-3)

यैर्जिता भूमिपालाश्च दैत्याश्च शतशोऽर्जुन। तान्दृष्ट्वा नेह पश्यामि जीवाम्यर्जुन दुर्मरः ॥१६-७-४॥
yairjitā bhūmipālāś ca daityāś ca śataśo'rjuna। tān dṛṣṭvā neha paśyāmi jīvāmy arjuna durmaraḥ ॥16-7-4॥

(By whom kings and daityas by the hundreds were conquered, O Arjuna, having seen them, I do not see that I live here, O Arjuna, hard to overcome.)
By whom even kings and hundreds of daityas were conquered, O Arjuna, seeing them, I feel I cannot live here; they are hard to overcome, O Arjuna. (16-7-4)
यौ तावर्जुन शिष्यौ ते प्रियौ बहुमतौ सदा। तयोरपनयात्पार्थ वृष्णयो निधनं गताः ॥१६-७-५॥

(Who those two, O Arjuna, disciples, your, beloved, highly esteemed, always; of those two, by removal, O Pārtha, the Vṛṣṇis, destruction, have reached.)
O Arjuna, those two disciples of yours, always beloved and highly esteemed, by their removal, O Pārtha, the Vṛṣṇis have met with destruction. (16-7-5)
यौ तौ वृष्णिप्रवीराणां द्वावेवातिरथौ मतौ। प्रद्युम्नो युयुधानश्च कथयन्कत्थसे च यौ ॥१६-७-६॥
yau tau vṛṣṇi-pravīrāṇāṃ dvāv eva atirathau matau। pradyumno yuyudhānaś ca kathayan katthase ca yau॥16-7-6॥
[यौ (yau) - who (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; वृष्णिप्रवीराणां (vṛṣṇi-pravīrāṇāṃ) - of the heroic (men) of the Vṛṣṇi (clan); द्वा (dvau) - two; (dual nominative) एव (eva) - indeed; only; अतिरथौ (atirathau) - great warriors (dual); मतौ (matau) - (are) regarded; (are) thought; प्रद्युम्नः (pradyumnaḥ) - Pradyumna; युयुधानः (yuyudhānaḥ) - Yuyudhāna; च (ca) - and; कथयन् (kathayan) - declaring; stating; कत्थसे (katthase) - you boast; च (ca) - and; यौ (yau) - who (dual);]
(Who, those two, of the heroic Vṛṣṇis, two indeed are regarded as great warriors: Pradyumna and Yuyudhāna, and declaring, you boast, and who.)
Among the heroic Vṛṣṇis, only those two are regarded as great warriors—Pradyumna and Yuyudhāna. Speaking of them, you boast—who are you? (16-7-6)
नित्यं त्वं कुरुशार्दूल कृष्णश्च मम पुत्रकः। तावुभौ वृष्णिनाशस्य मुखमास्तां धनञ्जय ॥१६-७-७॥
nityaṃ tvaṃ kuruśārdūla kṛṣṇaś ca mama putrakaḥ। tāv ubhau vṛṣṇināśasya mukham āstāṃ dhanañjaya॥16-7-7॥

(Always you, O tiger among the Kurus, and Kṛṣṇa, my son, those two both—of the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis—let be the face, O Dhanañjaya.)
Always you, O tiger among the Kurus, and Kṛṣṇa, my dear son, let both of you be the fore-initiators of the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis, O Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). (16-7-7)
न तु गर्हामि शैनेयं हार्दिक्यं चाहमर्जुन। अक्रूरं रौक्मिणेयं च शापो ह्येवात्र कारणम् ॥१६-७-८॥
na tu garhāmi śaineyaṃ hārdikyaṃ cāham arjuna. akrūraṃ raukmiṇeyaṃ ca śāpo hyevāttra kāraṇam ॥16-7-8॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; गर्हामि (garhāmi) - I blame; शैनेयं (śaineyaṃ) - the son of Śini (Sātyaki); हार्दिक्यं (hārdikyaṃ) - the son of Hṛdika (Kṛtavarman); च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; अक्रूरं (akrūram) - Akrūra; रौक्मिणेयं (raukmiṇeyaṃ) - the son of Rukmi (Rukmiṇī's son, i.e. Pradyumna or Aniruddha, but here Rukmiṇa's descendant); च (ca) - and; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - only; अत्र (atra) - here; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - the cause;]
(Not but I blame Śaineya, Hārdikya and I, Arjuna; Akrūra, Raukmiṇeya and, curse indeed only here cause.)
But I do not blame Śaineya, Hārdikya, myself or you, Arjuna; nor Akrūra or Raukmiṇeya. The curse alone is the cause here. (16-7-8)
केशिनं यस्तु कंसं च विक्रम्य जगतः प्रभुः। विदेहावकरोत्पार्थ चैद्यं च बलगर्वितम् ॥१६-७-९॥
keśinaṃ yastu kaṃsaṃ ca vikramya jagataḥ prabhuḥ। videhāvakrot pārtha caidyaṃ ca balagarvitam ॥16-7-9॥
[केशिनम् (keśinam) - Keśin demon; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; कंसं (kaṃsam) - Kaṃsa (the demon king); च (ca) - and; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having overpowered; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord; विदेहम्-अकरोत् (videham-akarot) - made (him) without a body (i.e., killed him); पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha (Arjuna); चैद्यं (caidyaṃ) - the king of the Cedis (Śiśupāla); च (ca) - and; बलगर्वितम् (balagarvitam) - arrogant of strength;]
(Who, but the Lord of the world, having overpowered Keśin and Kaṃsa, made (him) bodiless, O Pārtha, and (killed) the arrogant king of the Cedis.)
O Pārtha, the Lord of the world, who overpowered Keśin and Kaṃsa, killed them and also the arrogant king of the Cedis.
नैषादिमेकलव्यं च चक्रे कालिङ्गमागधान्। गान्धारान्काशिराजं च मरुभूमौ च पार्थिवान् ॥१६-७-१०॥
naiṣādimekalavyaṃ ca cakre kāliṅgamāgadhān। gāndhārānkāśirājaṃ ca marubhūmau ca pārthivān॥16-7-10॥
[नैषादिम् (naiṣādim) - the prince of the Niṣāda clan; एकलव्यं (ekalavyam) - Ekalavya; च (ca) - and; चक्रे (cakre) - conquered; कालिङ्गम् (kāliṅgam) - the king of Kaliṅga; मागधान् (māgadhān) - the princes of Magadha; गान्धारान् (gāndhārān) - the Gandhāra princes; काशिराजं (kāśirājam) - the king of Kāśi; च (ca) - and; मरुभूमौ (marubhūmau) - in the desert region; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings;]
(The prince of the Niṣādas, Ekalavya, and conquered the kings of Kaliṅga, (and) the princes of Magadha; the Gandhāra princes, the king of Kāśi, and the kings in the desert region.)

प्राच्यांश्च दाक्षिणात्यांश्च पार्वतीयांस्तथा नृपान्। सोऽभ्युपेक्षितवानेतमनयं मधुसूदनः ॥१६-७-११॥
prācyāṁś ca dākṣiṇātyāṁś ca pārvatīyāṁs tathā nṛpān। so'bhyupekṣitavān etam anayaṁ madhusūdanaḥ॥16-7-11॥
[प्राच्यान् (prācyān) - eastern (kings); च (ca) - and; दाक्षिणात्यान् (dākṣiṇātyān) - southern (kings); च (ca) - and; पार्वतीयान् (pārvatīyān) - mountain-dwelling (kings); तथा (tathā) - as well; likewise; नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्युपेक्षितवान् (abhyupekṣitavān) - overlooked; neglected; एतम् (etam) - this; अनयम् (anayam) - improper action; misdeed; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusudana;]
(eastern (kings) and southern (kings) and mountain-dwelling (kings), as well, kings; he overlooked this improper action, Madhusudana.)
He, Madhusudana, overlooked the kings of the east, the south, and the mountains as well, this improper action. (16-7-11)
ततः पुत्रांश्च पौत्रांश्च भ्रातॄनथ सखीनपि। शयानान्निहतान्दृष्ट्वा ततो मामब्रवीदिदम् ॥१६-७-१२॥
tataḥ putrāṃś ca pautrāṃś ca bhrātṝn atha sakhīn api | śayānān nihatān dṛṣṭvā tato mām abravīd idam ॥16-7-12॥

(Then sons and grandsons and brothers and also friends lying killed having seen, then to me said this.)
Then, having seen his sons, grandsons, brothers, and also friends lying dead, he said this to me. (16-7-12)
सम्प्राप्तोऽद्यायमस्यान्तः कुलस्य पुरुषर्षभ। आगमिष्यति बीभत्सुरिमां द्वारवतीं पुरीम् ॥१६-७-१३॥
samprāpto' dyāyamasyāntaḥ kulasya puruṣarṣabha। āgamiṣyati bībhatsur imāṃ dvāravatīṃ purīm ॥16-7-13॥
[सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - reached; अद्य (adya) - today; अयम् (ayam) - this; अस्य (asya) - his; अन्तः (antaḥ) - inside; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; आगमिष्यति (āgamiṣyati) - will come; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); इमाम् (imām) - this; द्वारवतीम् (dvāravatīm) - Dvāravatī; पुरीम् (purīm) - city;]
(Reached today this, his inside of the family, O best of men. Will come Bībhatsu to this Dvāravatī city.)
O best of men, today this (news) has reached within the family. Bībhatsu (Arjuna) will come to this city of Dvāravatī. (16-7-13)
आख्येयं तस्य यद्वृत्तं वृष्णीनां वैशसं महत्। स तु श्रुत्वा महातेजा यदूनामनयं प्रभो ॥ आगन्ता क्षिप्रमेवेह न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१६-७-१४॥
ākhyeyaṃ tasya yadvṛttaṃ vṛṣṇīnāṃ vaiśasaṃ mahat। sa tu śrutvā mahātejā yadūnām anayaṃ prabho ॥ āgantā kṣiprameva iha na me'trāsti vicāraṇā ॥16-7-14॥
[आख्येयं (ākhyeyam) - it should be told; तस्य (tasya) - his; यद्वृत्तं (yadvṛttam) - what event; what has happened; वृष्णीनां (vṛṣṇīnāṃ) - of the Vṛṣṇis; वैशसं (vaiśasam) - slaughter; disaster; महत् (mahat) - great; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great energy; यदूनाम् (yadūnām) - of the Yadus; अनयं (anayam) - destruction; disaster; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; आगन्ता (āgantā) - will come; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; अत्र (atra) - in this; अस्ति (asti) - there is; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration; hesitation;]
(It should be told, his, what event, of the Vṛṣṇis, slaughter, great. He, but, having heard, of great energy, of the Yadus, destruction, O lord. Will come quickly indeed here; not to me in this there is consideration.)
The great slaughter that befell the Vṛṣṇis and what happened to him should be told. But when the mighty one hears of the destruction of the Yadus, O lord, he will come here quickly; in this I have no doubt. (16-7-14)
योऽहं तमर्जुनं विद्धि योऽर्जुनः सोऽहमेव तु। यद्ब्रूयात्तत्तथा कार्यमिति बुध्यस्व माधव ॥१६-७-१५॥
yo'haṃ tam arjunaṃ viddhi yo'rjunaḥ so'ham eva tu। yad brūyāt tat tathā kāryam iti budhyasva mādhava॥16-7-15॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; तम् (tam) - him; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - what; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - he might say; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - thus; कार्यम् (kāryam) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; बुध्यस्व (budhyasva) - understand; माधव (mādhava) - Mādhava (O Kṛṣṇa);]
(He who is I, that Arjuna, know; who is Arjuna, he is indeed I, but. What he might say, that thus is to be done—thus understand, Mādhava.)
Know that he who is I is that Arjuna; and he who is Arjuna is indeed I. Whatever he says is to be acted upon accordingly—understand this, O Mādhava. (16-7-15)
स स्त्रीषु प्राप्तकालं वः पाण्डवो बालकेषु च। प्रतिपत्स्यति बीभत्सुर्भवतश्चौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ॥१६-७-१६॥
sa strīṣu prāptakālaṃ vaḥ pāṇḍavo bālakeṣu ca। pratipatsyati bībhatsur bhavataś ca ūrdhvadehikam॥16-7-16॥
[स (sa) - he; स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - among women; प्राप्तकालं (prāptakālam) - at the proper time; वः (vaḥ) - of you; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; बालकेषु (bālakeṣu) - among children; च (ca) - and; प्रतिपत्स्यति (pratipatsyati) - will act; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna, the one who detests ignoble acts); भवतः (bhavataḥ) - from you; च (ca) - and; ऊर्ध्वदेहिकम् (ūrdhvadehikam) - concerning funeral rites (post-mortem act);]
(He, among women at the proper time, of you, the Pāṇḍava, among children and, will act, Bībhatsu, from you and, concerning the funeral rites.)
He, the Pāṇḍava Arjuna (Bībhatsu), will perform the funeral rites for you at the proper time among your women and children. (16-7-16)
इमां च नगरीं सद्यः प्रतियाते धनञ्जये। प्राकाराट्टालकोपेतां समुद्रः प्लावयिष्यति ॥१६-७-१७॥
imāṁ ca nagarīṁ sadyaḥ pratiyāte dhanañjaye। prākārāṭṭālakopetāṁ samudraḥ plāvayiṣyati ॥16-7-17॥
[इमां (imām) - this (feminine, accusative singular); च (ca) - and; नगरीं (nagarīṁ) - city (accusative singular); सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; प्रतियाते (pratiyāte) - having returned; धनञ्जये (dhanañjaye) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna, locative singular); प्राकाराट्टालकोपेतां (prākārāṭṭālakopetām) - endowed with ramparts and turrets; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; प्लावयिष्यति (plāvayiṣyati) - will flood;]
(This and city immediately having returned Dhanañjaya, endowed with ramparts and turrets, the ocean will flood.)
As soon as Dhanañjaya returns, the ocean will flood this city, which is endowed with ramparts and turrets. (16-7-17)
अहं हि देशे कस्मिंश्चित्पुण्ये नियममास्थितः। कालं कर्ता सद्य एव रामेण सह धीमता ॥१६-७-१८॥
ahaṃ hi deśe kasmiṃścit puṇye niyamam āsthitaḥ। kālaṃ kartā sadya eva rāmeṇa saha dhīmatā ॥16-7-18॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; देशे (deśe) - in a region; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṃścit) - in some; पुण्ये (puṇye) - auspicious; नियमम् (niyamam) - vow; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having undertaken; कालं (kālam) - appointed time; कर्त (kartā) - I was to perform; सद्य एव (sadya eva) - immediately indeed; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - with Rāma; सह (saha) - together with; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise;]
(I indeed in a certain auspicious region having undertaken a vow, appointed time was to perform immediately indeed with the wise Rāma together.)
Indeed, I had undertaken a vow in some auspicious place and was to perform (the act) together with the wise Rāma immediately at the appointed time. (16-7-18)
एवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशो मामचिन्त्यपराक्रमः। हित्वा मां बालकैः सार्धं दिशं कामप्यगात्प्रभुः ॥१६-७-१९॥
evam uktvā hṛṣīkeśo mām acintya-parākramaḥ। hitvā māṁ bālakaiḥ sārdhaṁ diśaṁ kām apy agāt prabhuḥ॥16-7-19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; हृषीकेशः (hṛṣīkeśaḥ) - Hṛṣīkeśa; (Krishna, master of the senses); माम् (mām) - me; अचिन्त्यपराक्रमः (acintya-parākramaḥ) - of inconceivable valor; हित्वा (hitvā) - having left; माम् (mām) - me; बालकैः (bālakaiḥ) - with the children; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; काम् (kām) - any; अपि (api) - indeed; even; अगात् (agāt) - went; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Thus having spoken, Hṛṣīkeśa, of inconceivable valor, having left me together with the children, went to some direction indeed, the lord.)
Thus, having spoken in this way, Hṛṣīkeśa, the lord of inconceivable valor, left me with the children and went away in some direction. (16-7-19)
सोऽहं तौ च महात्मानौ चिन्तयन्भ्रातरौ तव। घोरं ज्ञातिवधं चैव न भुञ्जे शोककर्शितः ॥१६-७-२०॥
so'haṃ tau ca mahātmānau cintayanbhrātarau tava। ghoraṃ jñātivadhaṃ caiva na bhuñje śokakarśitaḥ॥16-7-20॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - great-souled ones; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking of; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - the brothers; तव (tava) - your; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; ज्ञातिवधम् (jñātivadham) - slaughter of kinsmen; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; भुञ्जे (bhuñje) - I enjoy (I eat); शोककर्शितः (śokakarśitaḥ) - afflicted by grief;]
(He, I, those two and great-souled ones, thinking of your brothers, the terrible slaughter of kinsmen indeed and, not I enjoy (I eat), afflicted by grief.)
I, thinking of your two great-souled brothers and that terrible slaughter of kinsmen, do not eat, afflicted by grief. (16-7-20)
न च भोक्ष्ये न जीविष्ये दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि पाण्डव। यदुक्तं पार्थ कृष्णेन तत्सर्वमखिलं कुरु ॥१६-७-२१॥
na ca bhokṣye na jīviṣye diṣṭyā prāpto'si pāṇḍava। yad uktaṃ pārtha kṛṣṇena tat sarvam akhilaṃ kuru ॥16-7-21॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भोक्ष्ये (bhokṣye) - I will enjoy; न (na) - not; जीविष्ये (jīviṣye) - I will live; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; असि (asi) - you are; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu; यद् (yad) - which; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अखिलम् (akhilam) - whole; कुरु (kuru) - do;]
(Not and I will enjoy, not I will live; by fortune you have arrived, O son of Pāṇḍu. Which spoken, O Pārtha, by Kṛṣṇa, that all whole do.)
I will neither enjoy nor live; by good fortune you have arrived, O son of Pāṇḍu. Whatever Kṛṣṇa has spoken, O Pārtha, do all of that entirely. (16-7-21)
एतत्ते पार्थ राज्यं च स्त्रियो रत्नानि चैव ह। इष्टान्प्राणानहं हीमांस्त्यक्ष्यामि रिपुसूदन ॥१६-७-२२॥
etat te pārtha rājyaṃ ca striyo ratnāni ca eva ha | iṣṭān prāṇān ahaṃ hi imān tyakṣyāmi ripusūdana ॥16-7-22॥

(This to you, O Partha, the kingdom and women, jewels indeed truly; desired lives I indeed these shall abandon, O destroyer of foes.)
O Partha, this kingdom, women, and jewels I give to you; I shall indeed abandon these desired lives, O destroyer of foes. (16-7-22)
