When the king of dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Pritha, was standing thus for a moment, then, O Kauravya, the gods led by Śakra arrived there. (18-3-1)
स्वयं विग्रहवान्धर्मो राजानं प्रसमीक्षितुम्। तत्राजगाम यत्रासौ कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१८-३-२॥

लोहकुम्भ्यः शिलाश्चैव नादृश्यन्त भयानकाः। विकृतानि शरीराणि यानि तत्र समन्ततः ॥ ददर्श राजा कौन्तेयस्तान्यदृश्यानि चाभवन् ॥१८-३-५॥
lohakumbhyaḥ śilāścaiva nādṛśyanta bhayānakāḥ। vikṛtāni śarīrāṇi yāni tatra samantataḥ ॥ dadarśa rājā kaunteyastānyadṛśyāni cābhavan ॥18-3-5॥

ततः शक्रः सुरपतिः श्रिया परमया युतः। युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥१८-३-९॥
tataḥ śakraḥ surapatiḥ śriyā paramayā yutaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca idaṃ sāntvapūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥18-3-9॥

युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो प्रीता देवगणास्तव। एह्येहि पुरुषव्याघ्र कृतमेतावता विभो ॥ सिद्धिः प्राप्ता त्वया राजँल्लोकाश्चाप्यक्षयास्तव ॥१८-३-१०॥

(Yudhishthira, O mighty-armed, pleased are the divine hosts with you. Come, come, O tiger among men, done by this much, O lord. Attainment has been achieved by you, O king, and also the worlds imperishable are yours.)
Yudhishthira, O mighty-armed, the divine hosts are pleased with you. Come, come, O tiger among men—by this much, O lord, it is accomplished. O king, you have attained success, and the imperishable worlds are also yours. (18-3-10)
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्यः शृणु चेदं वचो मम। अवश्यं नरकस्तात द्रष्टव्यः सर्वराजभिः ॥१८-३-११॥
na ca manyus tvayā kāryaḥ śṛṇu ca idaṃ vaco mama। avaśyaṃ narakas tāta draṣṭavyaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ ॥18-3-11॥

शुभानामशुभानां च द्वौ राशी पुरुषर्षभ। यः पूर्वं सुकृतं भुङ्क्ते पश्चान्निरयमेति सः ॥ पूर्वं नरकभाग्यस्तु पश्चात्स्वर्गमुपैति सः ॥१८-३-१२॥
śubhānāmaśubhānāṃ ca dvau rāśī puruṣarṣabha। yaḥ pūrvaṃ sukṛtaṃ bhuṅkte paścānnirayameti saḥ॥ pūrvaṃ narakabhāgyastu paścātsvargamupaiti saḥ॥18-3-12॥

(Of the auspicious and inauspicious, there are two kinds, O best of men; who previously enjoys good deeds, afterwards goes to hell, he; but who is previously destined for hell, afterwards attains heaven, he. (18-3-12))
O best of men, there are two kinds of destinies, auspicious and inauspicious; the one who first enjoys the fruits of good deeds later goes to hell, while the one who first experiences hell later attains heaven. (18-3-12)
भूयिष्ठं पापकर्मा यः स पूर्वं स्वर्गमश्नुते। तेन त्वमेवं गमितो मया श्रेयोर्थिना नृप ॥१८-३-१३॥

(Especially, one of evil deeds who, he before heaven attains. By him, you thus have been sent by me, seeker of welfare, O king.)

व्याजेन हि त्वया द्रोण उपचीर्णः सुतं प्रति। व्याजेनैव ततो राजन्दर्शितो नरकस्तव ॥१८-३-१४॥
vyājena hi tvayā droṇa upacīrṇaḥ sutaṃ prati। vyājenaiva tato rājan darśito narakas tava ॥18-3-14॥

(By pretext indeed by you Droṇa was overthrown towards the son. By pretext indeed thereafter, O king, hell was shown to you.)
Indeed, by pretext, Droṇa was overthrown by you for the sake of your son. By that same pretext thereafter, O king, hell was shown to you. (18-3-14)
यथैव त्वं तथा भीमस्तथा पार्थो यमौ तथा। द्रौपदी च तथा कृष्णा व्याजेन नरकं गताः ॥१८-३-१५॥
yathaiva tvaṁ tathā bhīmas tathā pārtho yamau tathā। draupadī ca tathā kṛṣṇā vyājena narakaṁ gatāḥ ॥18-3-15॥

(Just as indeed you, so Bhīma, so Pārtha, so the twins, so Draupadī and so Kṛṣṇā, by pretext, to hell have gone.)

आगच्छ नरशार्दूल मुक्तास्ते चैव किल्बिषात्। स्वपक्षाश्चैव ये तुभ्यं पार्थिवा निहता रणे ॥ सर्वे स्वर्गमनुप्राप्तास्तान्पश्य पुरुषर्षभ ॥१८-३-१६॥
āgaccha naraśārdūla muktās te caiva kilbiṣāt। svapakṣāś caiva ye tubhyaṃ pārthivā nihatā raṇe॥ sarve svargam anuprāptās tān paśya puruṣarṣabha॥18-3-16॥

(Come, tiger among men, your (people) have indeed been freed from sin; your own side and also those kings, who for you were slain in battle—all have attained heaven; see them, bull among men.)

(Brothers and others likewise see, one's own party and indeed kings, each his own place attained, let your mind's fever pass away.)
See, both brothers and others, as well as your own party and the kings, each having attained their own respective positions; let the fever of your mind be dispelled. (18-3-19)
अनुभूय पूर्वं त्वं कृच्छ्रमितः प्रभृति कौरव। विहरस्व मया सार्धं गतशोको निरामयः ॥१८-३-२०॥
anubhūya pūrvaṃ tvaṃ kṛcchram itaḥ prabhṛti kaurava। viharasva mayā sārdhaṃ gataśoko nirāmayaḥ ॥18-3-20॥
[अनुभूय (anubhūya) - having experienced; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - distress; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - onwards; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; विहरस्व (viharasva) - enjoy; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; गतशोकः (gataśokaḥ) - free from sorrow; निरामयः (nirāmayaḥ) - free from disease;]
(Having experienced distress formerly, you, O Kaurava, from here onwards enjoy together with me, free from sorrow and disease.)
Now that you have experienced suffering in the past, O Kaurava, hereafter live happily with me, free from sorrow and free from illness. (18-3-20)
कर्मणां तात पुण्यानां जितानां तपसा स्वयम्। दानानां च महाबाहो फलं प्राप्नुहि पाण्डव ॥१८-३-२१॥
karmaṇāṃ tāta puṇyānāṃ jitānāṃ tapasā svayam. dānānāṃ ca mahābāho phalaṃ prāpnuhi pāṇḍava ॥18-3-21॥

(O dear one, of actions, of virtue, of those conquered by austerity by oneself, and of gifts, O mighty-armed, attain the fruit, O son of Pāṇḍu.)
O mighty-armed son of Pāṇḍu, O dear one, attain for yourself the fruit of virtuous actions and of gifts, which have been conquered by your own austerity. (18-3-21)
अद्य त्वां देवगन्धर्वा दिव्याश्चाप्सरसो दिवि। उपसेवन्तु कल्याणं विरजोम्बरवाससः ॥१८-३-२२॥
adya tvāṃ devagandharvā divyāś cāpsaraso divi। upasevantu kalyāṇaṃ virajombara-vāsasaḥ ॥18-3-22॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you (accusative singular); देवगन्धर्वा (devagandharvā) - deva-gandharvas; gods and gandharvas; दिव्याश्चाप्सरसो (divyāś cāpsaraso) - divine (divyaḥ) and apsarasas; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; उपसेवन्तु (upasevantu) - may they serve; कल्याणं (kalyāṇam) - welfare; auspiciousness; विरजोम्बरवाससः (virajombara-vāsasaḥ) - those whose garments are spotless as the sky;]
(Today you the deva-gandharvas and also the divine apsaras in heaven may serve (with) auspiciousness those whose garments are spotless as the sky.)
Today, may the deva-gandharvas and the divine apsaras in heaven serve you with auspiciousness, they who wear garments spotless as the sky. (18-3-22)
राजसूयजिताँल्लोकानश्वमेधाभिवर्धितान्। प्राप्नुहि त्वं महाबाहो तपसश्च फलं महत् ॥१८-३-२३॥
rājasūyajitāṁllokānaśvamedhābhivardhitān। prāpnuhitvaṁmahābāhotapasaśca phalaṁ mahat ॥18-3-23॥
[राजसूयजितान् (rājasūyajitān) - those won by the rājasūya (royal consecration sacrifice); लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अश्वमेधाभिवर्धितान् (aśvamedhābhivardhitān) - increased by the aśvamedha (horse sacrifice); प्राप्नुहि (prāpnuhu) - attain; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; च (ca) - and; फलं (phalaṁ) - fruit; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(the worlds won by the rājasūya sacrifice, increased by the aśvamedha sacrifice, attain you, O mighty-armed! And (also) attain the great fruit of penance.)
O mighty-armed one, attain the worlds won by the rājasūya sacrifice and increased by the aśvamedha, and also attain the great fruit of penance. (18-3-23)
उपर्युपरि राज्ञां हि तव लोका युधिष्ठिर। हरिश्चन्द्रसमाः पार्थ येषु त्वं विहरिष्यसि ॥१८-३-२४॥
uparyupari rājñāṁ hi tava lokā yudhiṣṭhira। hariścandrasamāḥ pārtha yeṣu tvaṁ vihariṣyasi॥18-3-24॥
[उपर्युपरि (uparyupari) - higher and higher; राज्ञां (rājñām) - of kings; हि (hi) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; लोका (lokā) - worlds; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; हरिश्चन्द्रसमाः (hariścandra-samāḥ) - equal to Hariścandra; पार्थ (pārtha) - Partha (Arjuna/son of Pritha, here: O son of Pritha); येषु (yeṣu) - in which; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; विहरिष्यसि (vihariṣyasi) - will enjoy;]
(Higher and higher of kings indeed your worlds, Yudhiṣṭhira; equal to Hariścandra, O Partha, in which you will enjoy.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, higher and higher worlds among the kings, equal to Hariścandra, will be yours, O Partha, in which you shall enjoy. (18-3-24)
मान्धाता यत्र राजर्षिर्यत्र राजा भगीरथः। दौःषन्तिर्यत्र भरतस्तत्र त्वं विहरिष्यसि ॥१८-३-२५॥
māndhātā yatra rājarṣir yatra rājā bhagīrathaḥ। dauḥṣantir yatra bharatas tatra tvaṃ vihariṣyasi ॥18-3-25॥

(Where Mandhātā, the royal sage, where the king Bhagīratha, where the descendant of Duṣyanta, Bharata—there you will dwell.)
Where Mandhātā the royal sage, where king Bhagīratha, and where Bharata the descendent of Duṣyanta have been, there you will dwell. (18-3-25)
एषा देवनदी पुण्या पार्थ त्रैलोक्यपावनी। आकाशगङ्गा राजेन्द्र तत्राप्लुत्य गमिष्यसि ॥१८-३-२६॥
eṣā devanadī puṇyā pārtha trailokya-pāvanī । ākāśagaṅgā rājendra tatrāplutya gamiṣyasi ॥18-3-26॥

(This divine river, holy, O son of Pritha, purifier of the three worlds, the sky-Ganga, O king; there, having bathed, you will go.)
O son of Pritha, this divine and holy river—the purifier of the three worlds, the heavenly Ganga, O king—there, after bathing, you will go. (18-3-26)
अत्र स्नातस्य ते भावो मानुषो विगमिष्यति। गतशोको निरायासो मुक्तवैरो भविष्यसि ॥१८-३-२७॥
atra snātasya te bhāvo mānuṣo vigamiṣyati. gataśoko nirāyāso muktavairo bhaviṣyasi ॥18-3-27॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; स्नातस्य (snātasya) - having bathed; ते (te) - your; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - state; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - human; विगमिष्यति (vigamiṣyati) - will depart; गतशोकः (gataśokaḥ) - gone sorrow; निरायासः (nirāyāsaḥ) - without toil; मुक्तवैः (muktavairaḥ) - freed from enmity; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(Here, having bathed, your human state will depart. Sorrow gone, without toil, freed from enmity, you will become.)
Here, when you have bathed, your human condition will leave you. With sorrow gone, free from toil, and rid of enmity, you will become. (18-3-27)
एवं ब्रुवति देवेन्द्रे कौरवेन्द्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। धर्मो विग्रहवान्साक्षादुवाच सुतमात्मनः ॥१८-३-२८॥
evaṃ bruvati devendre kauravendraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। dharmo vigrahavānsākṣāduvāca sutamātmanaḥ ॥18-3-28॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - speaking; देवेन्द्रे (devendre) - Indra among the gods; कौरवेन्द्रम् (kauravendram) - king of the Kauravas; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - Dharma (the god of righteousness); विग्रहवान् (vigrahavān) - having assumed a form; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - in person; उवाच (uvāca) - said; सुतम् (sutam) - son; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(Thus, as the lord of the gods was speaking to Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of the Kauravas, Dharma, having assumed form, in person, spoke to his own son.)
While the lord of the gods was thus speaking to Yudhiṣṭhira, king of the Kauravas, Dharma himself, having assumed a bodily form, directly addressed his own son. (18-3-28)
भो भो राजन्महाप्राज्ञ प्रीतोऽस्मि तव पुत्रक। मद्भक्त्या सत्यवाक्येन क्षमया च दमेन च ॥१८-३-२९॥
bho bho rājan-mahāprājña prīto'smi tava putraka। madbhaktyā satyavākyena kṣamayā ca damena ca ॥18-3-29॥
[भो भो (bho bho) - O! O!; राजन् (rājan) - king; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - most wise; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रक (putraka) - child; मद्भक्त्या (madbhaktyā) - by my devotion; सत्यवाक्येन (satyavākyena) - by truth-speaking; क्षमया (kṣamayā) - by forgiveness; च (ca) - and; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; च (ca) - and;]
(O O king, most wise, pleased I am, your child; by my devotion, by truth-speaking, by forgiveness and by self-restraint and.)
O O king, most wise, I am pleased with you, child, because of my devotion, truthfulness, forgiveness, and self-restraint. (18-3-29)
एषा तृतीया जिज्ञासा तव राजन्कृता मया। न शक्यसे चालयितुं स्वभावात्पार्थ हेतुभिः ॥१८-३-३०॥
eṣā tṛtīyā jijñāsā tava rājan kṛtā mayā। na śakyase cālayituṃ svabhāvāt pārtha hetubhiḥ॥18-3-30॥
[एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); तृतीया (tṛtīyā) - third; जिज्ञासा (jijñāsā) - questioning; inquiry; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कृता (kṛtā) - has been made; has been done; मया (mayā) - by me; न (na) - not; शक्यसे (śakyase) - you are able; चालयितुं (cālayitum) - to mislead; to shake; स्वभावात् (svabhāvāt) - by nature; from inherent nature; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; O Pārtha; हेतुभिः (hetubhiḥ) - with reasons; by causes;]
(This third inquiry of yours, O king, has been made by me. You are not able to mislead (me) by your nature, O Pārtha, with reasons.)
This is the third question of yours, O king, which I have made. By your nature, O Pārtha, you are not able to mislead me by giving reasons. (18-3-30)
पूर्वं परीक्षितो हि त्वमासीर्द्वैतवनं प्रति। अरणीसहितस्यार्थे तच्च निस्तीर्णवानसि ॥१८-३-३१॥
pūrvaṃ parīkṣito hi tvam āsīr dvaitavanaṃ prati. araṇī-sahitasya arthe tac ca nistīrṇavān asi ॥18-3-31॥
[पूर्वम् (pūrvaṃ) - before; previously; परीक्षितः (parīkṣitaḥ) - tested; examined; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अासीः (āsīḥ) - were; द्वैतवनम् (dvaitavanam) - Dvaitavana; the Dvaita forest; प्रति (prati) - towards; to; अरणी-सहितस्य (araṇī-sahitasya) - with the arani fire-sticks; possessing arani; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; for the purpose; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; निस्तीर्णवान् (nistīrṇavān) - having crossed over; having accomplished; असि (asi) - you are;]
(Before you indeed were tested in going towards Dvaitavana; for the purpose of (being) with the arani (sacrificial fire-sticks), that also you have accomplished.)
Formerly, you were indeed tested when you went to Dvaitavana; for the purpose of carrying the arani fire-sticks, even that you have accomplished. (18-3-31)
सोदर्येषु विनष्टेषु द्रौपद्यां तत्र भारत। श्वरूपधारिणा पुत्र पुनस्त्वं मे परीक्षितः ॥१८-३-३२॥
sodaryeṣu vinaṣṭeṣu draupadyāṃ tatra bhārata। śvarūpadhāriṇā putra punastvaṃ me parīkṣitaḥ॥18-3-32॥
[सोदर्येषु (sodaryeṣu) - among own-brothers; विनष्टेषु (vinaṣṭeṣu) - having perished; द्रौपद्यां (draupadyām) - in Draupadī; तत्र (tatra) - there; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; शवरूपधारिणा (śvarūpadhāriṇā) - by one assuming the form of a corpse; पुत्र (putra) - son; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मे (me) - of me; परीक्षितः (parīkṣitaḥ) - Pārīkṣita (your name);]
(Among own brothers having perished in Draupadī, there O Bhārata, by one assuming the form of a corpse, son, again you of me Parīkṣitaḥ (the tested one).)
O Bhārata, when your own brothers had perished with Draupadī there, my son, by one assuming the form of a corpse, you were, once again, my Parīkṣita (the tested one, i.e., Parikshit). (18-3-32)
इदं तृतीयं भ्रातॄणामर्थे यत्स्थातुमिच्छसि। विशुद्धोऽसि महाभाग सुखी विगतकल्मषः ॥१८-३-३३॥
idaṃ tṛtīyaṃ bhrātṝṇām arthe yat sthātum icchasi। viśuddho 'si mahābhāga sukhī vigatakalmaṣaḥ ॥18-3-33॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तृतीयं (tṛtīyaṃ) - third; भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātṝṇām) - of the brothers; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; यत् (yat) - which; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; विशुद्धः (viśuddhaḥ) - pure; असि ('asi) - you are; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; विगतकल्मषः (vigatakalmaṣaḥ) - freed from impurity;]
(This third for the sake of the brothers which to stand you wish. You are pure, O greatly fortunate, happy, freed from impurity.)

न च ते भ्रातरः पार्थ नरकस्था विशां पते। मायैषा देवराजेन महेन्द्रेण प्रयोजिता ॥१८-३-३४॥
na ca te bhrātaraḥ pārtha narakasthā viśāṃ pate. māyaiṣā devarājena mahendreṇa prayojitā ॥18-3-34॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; नरकस्था (narakasthā) - situated in hell; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of people; माया (māyā) - illusion; एषा (eṣā) - this; देवराजेन (devarājena) - by the king of the gods; महेन्द्रेण (mahendreṇa) - by Mahendra (Indra); प्रयोजिता (prayojitā) - caused (set in motion);]
(Not and your brothers, O Pārtha, are situated in hell, O lord of people. This illusion by the king of gods, by Mahendra (Indra), has been caused.)
O Pārtha, your brothers are not in hell, O lord of the people. This is an illusion created by the king of the gods, Mahendra (Indra). (18-3-34)
अवश्यं नरकस्तात द्रष्टव्यः सर्वराजभिः। ततस्त्वया प्राप्तमिदं मुहूर्तं दुःखमुत्तमम् ॥१८-३-३५॥
avaśyaṁ narakastāta draṣṭavyaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ। tatastvayā prāptamidaṁ muhūrtaṁ duḥkhamuttamam॥18-3-35॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; नरकः (narakaḥ) - hell; तात (tāta) - dear father; द्रष्टव्यः (draṣṭavyaḥ) - to be seen; सर्वराजभिः (sarvarājabhiḥ) - by all kings; ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - obtained; इदं (idaṁ) - this; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - moment; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - greatest;]
(Certainly hell, dear father, is to be seen by all kings. Then by you this moment the greatest suffering was obtained.)
Certainly, dear father, hell is to be witnessed by all kings; therefore, you have now experienced the greatest suffering for a moment. (18-3-35)
न सव्यसाची भीमो वा यमौ वा पुरुषर्षभौ। कर्णो वा सत्यवाक्षूरो नरकार्हाश्चिरं नृप ॥१८-३-३६॥
na savyasācī bhīmo vā yamau vā puruṣarṣabhau। karṇo vā satyavākśūro narakārhāś-ciraṃ nṛpa ॥18-3-36॥
[न (na) - not; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - the ambidextrous one (Arjuna); भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; वा (vā) - or; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva); वा (vā) - or; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - the best among men; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; वा (vā) - or; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - true-speaking; शूरः (śūraḥ) - valiant; नरकार्हाः (narakārhāḥ) - deserving of hell; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Not Savyasācī (Arjuna), Bhīma, or the two sons of Yama, or the best among men; nor Karṇa or the valiant true-speaker deserve hell for a long time, O king.)
O king, neither Savyasācī (Arjuna), nor Bhīma, nor the two sons of Yama, nor the foremost men, nor Karṇa, the valiant speaker of truth, are truly deserving of hell for long. (18-3-36)
न कृष्णा राजपुत्री च नरकार्हा युधिष्ठिर। एह्येहि भरतश्रेष्ठ पश्य गङ्गां त्रिलोकगाम् ॥१८-३-३७॥
na kṛṣṇā rājaputrī ca narakārhā yudhiṣṭhira। ehy-ehi bharataśreṣṭha paśya gaṅgāṃ trilokagām ॥18-3-37॥
[न (na) - not; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī, a proper name); राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; च (ca) - and; नरकार्हा (narakārhā) - worthy of hell; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira (proper name, vocative); एहि (ehи) - come; एहि (ehi) - come; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - best of the Bharatas; पश्य (paśya) - behold; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṃ) - Gaṅgā (the river), (accusative singular); त्रिलोकगाम् (trilokagām) - who goes through the three worlds (accusative singular);]
(Not Kṛṣṇā, the princess, and not worthy of hell, O Yudhiṣṭhira! Come, come, best of the Bharatas, behold the Gaṅgā who goes through the three worlds.)
Kṛṣṇā, the princess, is not deserving of hell, O Yudhiṣṭhira! Come, come, best of the Bharatas, behold the Gaṅgā who traverses the three worlds. (18-3-37)
एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिस्तव पूर्वपितामहः। जगाम सह धर्मेण सर्वैश्च त्रिदशालयैः ॥१८-३-३८॥
evam-uktaḥ sa rājarṣiḥ tava pūrva-pitāmahaḥ। jagāma saha dharmeṇa sarvaiś ca tridaśālayaiḥ॥18-3-38॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus spoken; स (sa) - he; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; तव (tava) - your; पूर्वपितामहः (pūrva-pitāmahaḥ) - former great-grandfather; जगाम (jagāma) - went; सह (saha) - with; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; च (ca) - and; त्रिदशालयैः (tridaśālayaiḥ) - residents of the abode of the thirty gods;]
(Thus spoken, he, the royal sage, your former great-grandfather, went with righteousness, and with all the residents of the abode of the thirty gods.)
Having thus been addressed, your former great-grandfather, the royal sage, went together with righteousness and all the dwellers of the abode of the gods. (18-3-38)
गङ्गां देवनदीं पुण्यां पावनीमृषिसंस्तुताम्। अवगाह्य तु तां राजा तनुं तत्याज मानुषीम् ॥१८-३-३९॥
gaṅgāṁ devanadīṁ puṇyāṁ pāvanīm ṛṣi-samstutām। avagāhya tu tāṁ rājā tanuṁ tatyāja mānuṣīm॥18-3-39॥
