ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा देवैः सर्षिमरुद्गणैः। पूज्यमानो ययौ तत्र यत्र ते कुरुपुङ्गवाः ॥१८-४-१॥

tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā devaiḥ saṛṣiṁarudgaṇaiḥ। pūjyamāno yayau tatra yatra te kurupuṅgavāḥ ॥18-4-1॥

(Then Yudhiṣṭhira the king, by the gods together with seers and hosts of Maruts, being honored, went there where those foremost among the Kurus (were).)

Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, honored by the gods along with seers and hosts of Maruts, proceeded to the place where those foremost of the Kurus were. (18-4-1)

ददर्श तत्र गोविन्दं ब्राह्मेण वपुषान्वितम्। तेनैव दृष्टपूर्वेण सादृश्येनोपसूचितम् ॥१८-४-२॥

dadarśa tatra govindaṃ brāhmeṇa vapuṣānvitam। tenaiva dṛṣṭapūrveṇa sādr̥śyenopasūcitam ॥18-4-2॥

(He saw there Govinda endowed with a brahma-like form, by that very (one) seen before, indicated by similarity.)

दीप्यमानं स्ववपुषा दिव्यैरस्त्रैरुपस्थितम्। चक्रप्रभृतिभिर्घोरैर्दिव्यैः पुरुषविग्रहैः ॥ उपास्यमानं वीरेण फल्गुनेन सुवर्चसा ॥१८-४-३॥

dīpyamānaṃ svavapuṣā divyairastrairupasthitam। cakraprabhṛtibhirghorairdivyaiḥ puruṣavigrahaiḥ ॥ upāsyamānaṃ vīreṇa phalgunena suvarcasā ॥18-4-3॥

[दीप्यमानं (dīpyamānaṃ) - shining; स्ववपुषा (svavapuṣā) - with his own body; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - by divine; अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - by weapons; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - present; चक्रप्रभृतिभिः (cakra-prabhṛtibhiḥ) - with the discus and others; घोरैः (ghoraiḥ) - terrible; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - divine; पुरुषविग्रहैः (puruṣavigrahaiḥ) - in masculine forms; उपास्यमानं (upāsyamānaṃ) - being worshipped; वीरेण (vīreṇa) - by the hero; फल्गुनेन (phalgunena) - by Phalguna; सुवर्चसा (suvarcasā) - of bright splendor;]

(Shining with his own body, present with divine weapons, with the discus and others, terrible, with divine masculine forms, being worshipped by the hero Phalguna of bright splendor.)

Radiant in his own form and attended by divine weapons, surrounded by formidable divine beings with discus and others, he was worshipped by the valiant Phalguna, resplendent in brightness. (18-4-3)

अपरस्मिन्नथोद्देशे कर्णं शस्त्रभृतां वरम्। द्वादशादित्यसहितं ददर्श कुरुनन्दनः ॥१८-४-४॥

aparasminn athoddeśe karṇaṃ śastrabhṛtāṃ varam. dvādaśādityasahitaṃ dadarśa kurunandanaḥ ॥18-4-4॥

तथा ददर्श पाञ्चालीं कमलोत्पलमालिनीम्। वपुषा स्वर्गमाक्रम्य तिष्ठन्तीमर्कवर्चसम् ॥१८-४-७॥

tathā dadarśa pāñcālīṃ kamalotpalamālinīm। vapuṣā svargamākramya tiṣṭhantīm arkavarcasam ॥18-4-7॥

[तथा (tathā) - thus; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; पाञ्चालीं (pāñcālīm) - Pāñcālī (Draupadī, daughter of Pāñcāla); कमलोत्पलमालिनीम् (kamalotpalamālinīm) - wearing garlands of lotuses and blue lotuses; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - by her form; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having ascended; तिष्ठन्तीम् (tiṣṭhantīm) - standing; अर्कवर्चसम् (arkavarcasam) - having the lustre of the sun;]

(Thus he saw Pāñcālī, wearing garlands of lotuses and blue lotuses, by her form having ascended heaven, standing, having the lustre of the sun.)

Thus he saw Pāñcālī (Draupadī), adorned with garlands of lotuses and blue lotuses, standing in heaven with a radiant form, shining with the brilliance of the sun. (18-4-7)

अथैनां सहसा राजा प्रष्टुमैच्छद्युधिष्ठिरः। ततोऽस्य भगवानिन्द्रः कथयामास देवराट् ॥१८-४-८॥

(Then her suddenly the king to ask wished Yudhishthira. Then his the venerable Indra told began the lord of the gods.)

Then Yudhishthira, the king, suddenly wished to ask her. Then the venerable Indra, the lord of the gods, began to speak. (18-4-8)

श्रीरेषा द्रौपदीरूपा त्वदर्थे मानुषं गता। अयोनिजा लोककान्ता पुण्यगन्धा युधिष्ठिर ॥१८-४-९॥

śrir eṣā draupadī-rūpā tvad-arthe mānuṣaṃ gatā। ayonijā loka-kāntā puṇya-gandhā yudhiṣṭhira ॥18-4-9॥

[श्रीः (śrīḥ) - splendor; fortune; goddess Lakṣmī; एषा (eṣā) - this (fem.); द्रौपदीरूपा (draupadī-rūpā) - in the form of Draupadī; त्वदर्थे (tvad-arthe) - for your sake; मानुषं (mānuṣam) - human (form); गता (gatā) - has gone; has taken up; अयोनिजा (ayonijā) - not born from a womb; लोककान्ता (loka-kāntā) - beloved of the world; पुण्यगन्धा (puṇya-gandhā) - having a sacred fragrance; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]

(This fortune—this in the form of Draupadī—for your sake has taken up a human (form), not born from a womb, beloved of the world, having a sacred fragrance, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)

This goddess of fortune, in the form of Draupadī, assumed a human form for your sake, O Yudhiṣṭhira. Not born from a womb, she is beloved of the world and possesses a sacred fragrance. (18-4-9)

द्रुपदस्य कुले जाता भवद्भिश्चोपजीविता। रत्यर्थं भवतां ह्येषा निर्मिता शूलपाणिना ॥१८-४-१०॥

drupadasya kule jātā bhavadbhiś copajīvitā | ratyarthaṃ bhavatāṃ hy eṣā nirmitā śūlapāṇinā ॥18-4-10॥

[द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; कुले (kule) - in the family; जाता (jātā) - born; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you (plural); च (ca) - and; उपजीविता (upajīvitā) - sustained; रत्यर्थम् (ratyartham) - for the sake of delight; भवताम् (bhavatām) - for you (plural); हि (hi) - indeed; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); निर्मिता (nirmitā) - created; शूलपाणिना (śūlapāṇinā) - by the wielder of the trident (Śiva);]

(Born in the family of Drupada, sustained by you, for the sake of delight for you indeed, this (woman) was created by the wielder of the trident.)

एते पञ्च महाभागा गन्धर्वाः पावकप्रभाः। द्रौपद्यास्तनया राजन्युष्माकममितौजसः ॥१८-४-११॥

ete pañca mahābhāgā gandharvāḥ pāvakaprabhāḥ। draupadyās tanayā rājann yuṣmākam amitaujasaḥ ॥18-4-11॥

[एते (ete) - these; पञ्च (pañca) - five; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - gandharvas; पावकप्रभाः (pāvakaprabhāḥ) - fiery-lustrous; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - of Draupadī; तनयाः (tanayāḥ) - sons; राजन् (rājan) - O King; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; अमितौजसः (amitaujasaḥ) - of boundless energy;]

(These five greatly fortunate gandharvas, having a fiery luster, O King, are the sons of Draupadī, of your boundless energy.)

पश्य गन्धर्वराजानं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम्। एनं च त्वं विजानीहि भ्रातरं पूर्वजं पितुः ॥१८-४-१२॥

paśya gandharvarājānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ manīṣiṇam। enaṃ ca tvaṃ vijānīhi bhrātaraṃ pūrvajaṃ pituḥ॥18-4-12॥

[पश्य (paśya) - see; गन्धर्वराजानम् (gandharvarājānam) - Gandharva king; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; मनीषिणम् (manīṣiṇam) - the wise one; एनम् (enam) - this one; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - the brother; पूर्वजम् (pūrvajam) - the elder; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (your) father;]

(This your elder brother, son of Kunti, having the radiance of fire, the son of the Sun, the eldest, the best, known as Rādheya, thus, well-known. Accompanied by the Sun, he goes. Behold this (one), best among men.)

This is your elder brother, son of Kunti, radiant like fire, the firstborn, the best, renowned as Rādheya, the son of the Sun. Accompanied by the Sun, he is going; see him, O best among men. (18-4-13)

साध्यानामथ देवानां वसूनां मरुतामपि। गणेषु पश्य राजेन्द्र वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथान् ॥ सात्यकिप्रमुखान्वीरान्भोजांश्चैव महारथान् ॥१८-४-१४॥

sādhyānām atha devānāṃ vasūnāṃ marutām api। gaṇeṣu paśya rājendra vṛṣṇy-andhaka-mahārathān॥ sātyaki-pramukhān vīrān bhojāṃś caiva mahārathān॥18-4-14॥

Then, O king, see among the hosts the great chariot-warriors of the Sādhya gods, Vasus, Maruts, and the gods; the heroes headed by Sātyaki, as well as the Bhoja chiefs, all mighty chariot-warriors. (18-4-14)

सोमेन सहितं पश्य सौभद्रमपराजितम्। अभिमन्युं महेष्वासं निशाकरसमद्युतिम् ॥१८-४-१५॥

somena sahitaṃ paśya saubhadram aparājitam। abhimanyuṃ maheṣvāsaṃ niśākarasamadyutim ॥18-4-15॥

(This Pāṇḍu, the great archer, with Kuntī and Mādrī accompanied, by chariot always comes near, your and my father, to (our) presence.)

वसुभिः सहितं पश्य भीष्मं शान्तनवं नृपम्। द्रोणं बृहस्पतेः पार्श्वे गुरुमेनं निशामय ॥१८-४-१७॥

vasubhiḥ sahitaṃ paśya bhīṣmaṃ śāntanavaṃ nṛpam। droṇaṃ bṛhaspateḥ pārśve gurum enaṃ niśāmaya॥18-4-17॥

These and other kings and warriors of yours, O Pāṇḍava, are going together with Gandharvas, Yakṣas, and other meritorious beings as well. (18-4-18)

गुह्यकानां गतिं चापि केचित्प्राप्ता नृसत्तमाः। त्यक्त्वा देहं जितस्वर्गाः पुण्यवाग्बुद्धिकर्मभिः ॥१८-४-१९॥

guhyakānāṃ gatiṃ cāpi kecitprāptā nṛsattamāḥ। tyaktvā dehaṃ jitasvargāḥ puṇyavāgbuddhikarmabhiḥ ॥18-4-19॥
