vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā devaiḥ saṛṣiṁarudgaṇaiḥ। pūjyamāno yayau tatra yatra te kurupuṅgavāḥ ॥18-4-1॥
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, honored by the gods along with seers and hosts of Maruts, proceeded to the place where those foremost of the Kurus were. (18-4-1)
dadarśa tatra govindaṃ brāhmeṇa vapuṣānvitam। tenaiva dṛṣṭapūrveṇa sādr̥śyenopasūcitam ॥18-4-2॥
There he saw Govinda, endowed with a brahma-like form, and recognized by the resemblance to one he had seen before, as indicated by that likeness. (18-4-2)
dīpyamānaṃ svavapuṣā divyairastrairupasthitam। cakraprabhṛtibhirghorairdivyaiḥ puruṣavigrahaiḥ ॥ upāsyamānaṃ vīreṇa phalgunena suvarcasā ॥18-4-3॥
Radiant in his own form and attended by divine weapons, surrounded by formidable divine beings with discus and others, he was worshipped by the valiant Phalguna, resplendent in brightness. (18-4-3)
aparasminn athoddeśe karṇaṃ śastrabhṛtāṃ varam. dvādaśādityasahitaṃ dadarśa kurunandanaḥ ॥18-4-4॥
Then, in another place, Kuru's descendent saw Karna, the best of warriors, accompanied by twelve suns. (18-4-4)
athāparasminnuddeśe marudgaṇavṛtaṃ prabhum। bhīmasenam athāpaśyat tenaiva vapuṣānvitam ॥18-4-5॥
Then, in another place, Bhīmasena saw the lord surrounded by the hosts of Maruts, possessed of that very form. (18-4-5)
aśvinostu tathā sthāne dīpyamānau svatejasā. nakulaṁ sahadevaṁ ca dadarśa kurunandanaḥ ॥18-4-6॥
Kurunandana (Yudhishthira) saw Nakula and Sahadeva, shining with their own brilliance, in the place of the Aśvins. (18-4-6)
tathā dadarśa pāñcālīṃ kamalotpalamālinīm। vapuṣā svargamākramya tiṣṭhantīm arkavarcasam ॥18-4-7॥
Thus he saw Pāñcālī (Draupadī), adorned with garlands of lotuses and blue lotuses, standing in heaven with a radiant form, shining with the brilliance of the sun. (18-4-7)
athaināṃ sahasā rājā praṣṭum aicchad yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. tato'sya bhagavān indraḥ kathayām āsa devarāṭ ॥18-4-8॥
Then Yudhishthira, the king, suddenly wished to ask her. Then the venerable Indra, the lord of the gods, began to speak. (18-4-8)
śrir eṣā draupadī-rūpā tvad-arthe mānuṣaṃ gatā। ayonijā loka-kāntā puṇya-gandhā yudhiṣṭhira ॥18-4-9॥
This goddess of fortune, in the form of Draupadī, assumed a human form for your sake, O Yudhiṣṭhira. Not born from a womb, she is beloved of the world and possesses a sacred fragrance. (18-4-9)
drupadasya kule jātā bhavadbhiś copajīvitā | ratyarthaṃ bhavatāṃ hy eṣā nirmitā śūlapāṇinā ॥18-4-10॥
She was born in the family of Drupada, maintained by you, and for your pleasure indeed, this woman was created by the wielder of the trident (Śiva). (18-4-10)
ete pañca mahābhāgā gandharvāḥ pāvakaprabhāḥ। draupadyās tanayā rājann yuṣmākam amitaujasaḥ ॥18-4-11॥
O King, these five greatly fortunate gandharvas, who possess a fiery luster, are the sons of Draupadī and are of your boundless energy. (18-4-11)
paśya gandharvarājānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ manīṣiṇam। enaṃ ca tvaṃ vijānīhi bhrātaraṃ pūrvajaṃ pituḥ॥18-4-12॥
See the Gandharva king Dhritarashtra, the wise, and know this one as your father's elder brother. (18-4-12)
ayaṁ te pūrvajo bhrātā kaunteyaḥ pāvakadyutiḥ। sūryaputro'grajaḥ śreṣṭho rādheya iti viśrutaḥ ॥ādityasahito yāti paśyainaṁ puruṣarṣabha ॥18-4-13॥
This is your elder brother, son of Kunti, radiant like fire, the firstborn, the best, renowned as Rādheya, the son of the Sun. Accompanied by the Sun, he is going; see him, O best among men. (18-4-13)
sādhyānām atha devānāṃ vasūnāṃ marutām api। gaṇeṣu paśya rājendra vṛṣṇy-andhaka-mahārathān॥ sātyaki-pramukhān vīrān bhojāṃś caiva mahārathān॥18-4-14॥
Then, O king, see among the hosts the great chariot-warriors of the Sādhya gods, Vasus, Maruts, and the gods; the heroes headed by Sātyaki, as well as the Bhoja chiefs, all mighty chariot-warriors. (18-4-14)
somena sahitaṃ paśya saubhadram aparājitam। abhimanyuṃ maheṣvāsaṃ niśākarasamadyutim ॥18-4-15॥
Behold Abhimanyu, the unconquered son of Subhadrā, a great archer, whose radiance is like that of the Moon, together with Soma. (18-4-15)
eṣa pāṇḍur-maheṣvāsaḥ kuntyā mādryā ca saṅgataḥ। vimānena sadābhyeti pitā tava mamāntikam ॥18-4-16॥
This is Pāṇḍu, the great archer, accompanied by Kuntī and Mādrī, who always approaches in a chariot—your and my father, coming before us. (18-4-16)
vasubhiḥ sahitaṃ paśya bhīṣmaṃ śāntanavaṃ nṛpam। droṇaṃ bṛhaspateḥ pārśve gurum enaṃ niśāmaya॥18-4-17॥
See Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu and king, together with the Vasus; and observe this teacher Droṇa, who stands by the side of Bṛhaspati. (18-4-17)
ete cānye mahīpālā yodhās tava ca pāṇḍava. gandharvaiḥ sahitā yānti yakṣaiḥ puṇyajanais tathā ॥18-4-18॥
These and other kings and warriors of yours, O Pāṇḍava, are going together with Gandharvas, Yakṣas, and other meritorious beings as well. (18-4-18)
guhyakānāṃ gatiṃ cāpi kecitprāptā nṛsattamāḥ। tyaktvā dehaṃ jitasvargāḥ puṇyavāgbuddhikarmabhiḥ ॥18-4-19॥
O best of men, some have also reached the realm of the Guhyakas, having cast off their bodies and conquered heaven by their virtuous words, thoughts, and actions. (18-4-19)
