Vaisesika Sūtra 6.2.01

दृष्टादृष्टप्रयोजनानां दृष्टाभावे प्रयोजनमभ्युदयाय ॥१॥

Among the seen and unseen purposes, in the absence of the seen, the (unseen) purpose is benevolence (abhyudayā).
