Vaisesika Sūtra 6.2.02

abhiṣecanopavāsa-brahmacarya-gurukulavāsa-vānaprastha-yajña-dāna-prokṣaṇa-diṅ-nakṣatra-mantra-kāla-niyamāś-ca-adṛṣṭāya ॥2॥

Consecration, fasting, celibacy, residence in the preceptor's home, forest life, sacrifice, charity, sprinkling, direction, star, mantra, time, and regulations — all are for the unseen (purpose, i.e. meant for benevolence).
