रुरुरुवाच॥
rururuvāca॥
[रुरु (ruru) - Ruru; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Ruru said.)
Ruru spoke.
मम प्राणसमा भार्या दष्टासीद्भुजगेन ह । तत्र मे समयो घोर आत्मनोरग वै कृतः ॥१-१०-१॥
mama prāṇasamā bhāryā daṣṭāsīdbhujagena ha । tatra me samayo ghora ātmānoraga vai kṛtaḥ ॥1-10-1॥
[मम (mama) - my; प्राणसमा (prāṇasamā) - life-like; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; दष्टा (daṣṭā) - bitten; असीत् (āsīt) - was; भुजगेन (bhujagena) - by a snake; ह (ha) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; समयः (samayaḥ) - time; घोरः (ghoraḥ) - terrible; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by myself; उरगः (uragaḥ) - snake; वै (vai) - indeed; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(My life-like wife was indeed bitten by a snake. There, my terrible time was indeed made by myself, the snake.)
My beloved wife, who is as dear to me as life itself, was bitten by a snake. In that situation, I indeed created a terrible time for myself.
हन्यां सदैव भुजगं यं यं पश्येयमित्युत । ततोऽहं त्वां जिघांसामि जीवितेन विमोक्ष्यसे ॥१-१०-२॥
hanyāṃ sadaiva bhujagaṃ yaṃ yaṃ paśyeyamityuta । tato'haṃ tvāṃ jighāṃsāmi jīvitena vimokṣyase ॥1-10-2॥
[हन्यां (hanyāṃ) - I would kill; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; भुजगं (bhujagaṃ) - snake; यं (yaṃ) - whom; यं (yaṃ) - whom; पश्येयम् (paśyeyam) - I see; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; जिघांसामि (jighāṃsāmi) - intend to kill; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; विमोक्ष्यसे (vimokṣyase) - you will be released;]
(I would always kill the snake whom I see, thus indeed. Then I intend to kill you; you will be released with life.)
I always intended to kill any snake I saw. Therefore, I intend to kill you, but you will be released with your life.
डुण्डुभ उवाच॥
ḍuṇḍubha uvāca॥
[डुण्डुभ (ḍuṇḍubha) - Dundubha; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Dundubha said.)
Dundubha spoke.
अन्ये ते भुजगा विप्र ये दशन्तीह मानवान् । डुण्डुभानहिगन्धेन न त्वं हिंसितुमर्हसि ॥१-१०-३॥
anye te bhujagā vipra ye daśantīha mānavān । ḍuṇḍubhānahigandhena na tvaṃ hiṃsitumarhasi ॥1-10-3॥
[अन्ये (anye) - others; ते (te) - they; भुजगा (bhujagā) - serpents; विप्र (vipra) - O wise one; ये (ye) - who; दशन्ति (daśanti) - bite; इह (iha) - here; मानवान् (mānavān) - humans; डुण्डुभानहिगन्धेन (ḍuṇḍubhānahigandhena) - with the scent of a dead elephant; न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हिंसितुम् (hiṃsitum) - to harm; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought to;]
(Others, they are serpents, O wise one, who bite humans here. With the scent of a dead elephant, you ought not to harm.)
O wise one, there are other serpents here who bite humans. You should not harm with the scent of a dead elephant.
एकानर्थान्पृथगर्थानेकदुःखान्पृथक्सुखान् । डुण्डुभान्धर्मविद्भूत्वा न त्वं हिंसितुमर्हसि ॥१-१०-४॥
ekānarthān pṛthagarthān ekaduḥkhān pṛthaksukhān । ḍuṇḍubhān dharmavidbhūtvā na tvaṃ hiṃsitumarhasi ॥1-10-4॥
[एकानर्थान् (ekānarthān) - one-purpose; पृथगर्थान् (pṛthagarthān) - different-purposes; एकदुःखान् (ekaduḥkhān) - one-sorrow; पृथक्सुखान् (pṛthaksukhān) - different-pleasures; डुण्डुभान् (ḍuṇḍubhān) - drums; धर्मविद् (dharmavid) - knower-of-dharma; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having-become; न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हिंसितुम् (hiṃsitum) - to-harm; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought;]
(One-purpose, different-purposes, one-sorrow, different-pleasures, drums, having become a knower of dharma, you ought not to harm.)
Having understood the singular and diverse purposes, the singular sorrow and diverse pleasures, and having become a knower of dharma, you should not harm the drums.
सूत उवाच॥

[सूत (sūta) - Sūta; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Sūta said.
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य भुजगस्य रुरुस्तदा । नावधीद्भयसंविग्न ऋषिं मत्वाथ डुण्डुभम् ॥१-१०-५॥
iti śrutvā vacastasya bhujagasya rurustada । nāvadhīdbhayasaṁvigna ṛṣiṁ matvātha ḍuṇḍubham ॥1-10-5॥
[इति (iti) - thus; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तस्य (tasya) - his; भुजगस्य (bhujagasya) - of the serpent; रुरुः (ruruḥ) - Ruru; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; अवधीद् (avadhīd) - killed; भयसंविग्न (bhayasaṁvigna) - fearful; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṁ) - sage; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; अथ (atha) - then; डुण्डुभम् (ḍuṇḍubham) - Dundubha;]
(Thus, having heard the words of the serpent, Ruru then, thinking the sage to be Dundubha, did not kill him, being fearful.)
Upon hearing the serpent's words, Ruru, in fear, refrained from killing the sage, mistaking him for Dundubha.
उवाच चैनं भगवान्रुरुः संशमयन्निव । कामया भुजग ब्रूहि कोऽसीमां विक्रियां गतः ॥१-१०-६॥
uvāca cainaṃ bhagavānruruḥ saṃśamayanniva । kāmayā bhujaga brūhi ko'sī māṃ vikriyāṃ gataḥ ॥1-10-6॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the lord; रुरुः (ruruḥ) - Ruru; संशमयन् (saṃśamayan) - calming; इव (iva) - as if; कामया (kāmayā) - with desire; भुजग (bhujaga) - O serpent; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; कः (kaḥ) - who; असि (asi) - are you; इमां (imāṃ) - this; विक्रियाम् (vikriyām) - transformation; गतः (gataḥ) - undergone;]
(And the lord Ruru said this, as if calming, "With desire, O serpent, tell who are you, having undergone this transformation.")
The lord Ruru, in an attempt to calm, said, "O serpent, with desire, tell me who you are and why you have undergone this transformation."
डुण्डुभ उवाच॥
ḍuṇḍubha uvāca॥
[डुण्डुभ (ḍuṇḍubha) - Dundubha; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Dundubha said.)
Dundubha spoke.
अहं पुरा रुरो नाम्ना ऋषिरासं सहस्रपात् । सोऽहं शापेन विप्रस्य भुजगत्वमुपागतः ॥१-१०-७॥
ahaṁ purā ruro nāmnā ṛṣirāsaṁ sahasrapāt । so'haṁ śāpena viprasya bhujagatvamupāgataḥ ॥1-10-7॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; पुरा (purā) - formerly; रुरः (ruraḥ) - Ruru; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; आसम् (āsam) - was; सहस्रपात् (sahasrapāt) - thousand-legged; सः (saḥ) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; शापेन (śāpena) - by curse; विप्रस्य (viprasya) - of the sage; भुजगत्वम् (bhujagatvam) - snakehood; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - attained;]
(I was formerly a sage named Ruru, thousand-legged. By the curse of the sage, I attained snakehood.)
I was once a sage named Ruru, who had a thousand legs. Due to a sage's curse, I was transformed into a snake.
रुरुरुवाच॥
rururuvāca॥
[रुरु (ruru) - Ruru; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Ruru said.)
Ruru spoke.
किमर्थं शप्तवान्क्रुद्धो द्विजस्त्वां भुजगोत्तम । कियन्तं चैव कालं ते वपुरेतद्भविष्यति ॥१-१०-८॥
kimarthaṃ śaptavān kruddho dvijastvāṃ bhujagottama । kiyantaṃ caiva kālaṃ te vapuretatbhaviṣyati ॥1-10-8॥
[किमर्थं (kimarthaṃ) - for what reason; शप्तवान् (śaptavān) - cursed; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - brahmin; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; भुजगोत्तम (bhujagottama) - O best of serpents; कियन्तम् (kiyantam) - how long; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कालम् (kālam) - time; ते (te) - your; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; एतत् (etat) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(For what reason did the angry brahmin curse you, O best of serpents? And how long indeed will this form of yours be?)
Why did the angry sage curse you, O best of serpents? And how long will you remain in this form?

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय। तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय। मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय। ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥ - बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् 1.3.28
