शौनक उवाच॥
Śaunaka spoke:
सौते कथय तामेतां विस्तरेण कथां पुनः। आस्तीकस्य कवेः साधोः शुश्रूषा परमा हि नः ॥१-१४-१॥
O Sauti, please narrate that story again in detail. We have a great desire to hear about the sage Astika, who is virtuous.
मधुरं कथ्यते सौम्य श्लक्ष्णाक्षरपदं त्वया। प्रीयामहे भृशं तात पितेवेदं प्रभाषसे ॥१-१४-२॥
Gentle one, you speak sweetly and smoothly. We are very pleased, dear, as if you were a father speaking.
अस्मच्छुश्रूषणे नित्यं पिता हि निरतस्तव। आचष्टैतद्यथाख्यानं पिता ते त्वं तथा वद ॥१-१४-३॥
Your father is always engaged in our service. He told this story to you, so you should speak accordingly.
सूत उवाच॥
Sūta said:
आयुष्यमिदमाख्यानमास्तीकं कथयामि ते। यथा श्रुतं कथयतः सकाशाद्वै पितुर्मया ॥१-१४-४॥
I am narrating to you this life-giving story of Āstīka, as I have heard it from my father.
पुरा देवयुगे ब्रह्मन्प्रजापतिसुते शुभे। आस्तां भगिन्यौ रूपेण समुपेतेऽद्भुतेऽनघे ॥१-१४-५॥
Once upon a time, in the age of the gods, O Brahman, there were two sisters, daughters of Prajapati, who were auspicious and endowed with a wonderful and sinless form.
ते भार्ये कश्यपस्यास्तां कद्रूश्च विनता च ह। प्रादात्ताभ्यां वरं प्रीतः प्रजापतिसमः पतिः ॥ कश्यपो धर्मपत्नीभ्यां मुदा परमया युतः ॥१-१४-६॥
Kadrū and Vinatā were indeed the wives of Kaśyapa. The husband, who was as revered as Prajāpati, was pleased and granted them a boon. Kaśyapa, filled with supreme joy, was united with his virtuous wives.
वरातिसर्गं श्रुत्वैव कश्यपादुत्तमं च ते। हर्षादप्रतिमां प्रीतिं प्रापतुः स्म वरस्त्रियौ ॥१-१४-७॥
Upon hearing the excellent boon from Kaśyapa, the two distinguished women were filled with unparalleled joy.
वव्रे कद्रूः सुतान्नागान्सहस्रं तुल्यतेजसः। द्वौ पुत्रौ विनता वव्रे कद्रूपुत्राधिकौ बले ॥ ओजसा तेजसा चैव विक्रमेणाधिकौ सुतौ ॥१-१४-८॥
Kadrū chose a thousand serpent sons of equal splendor, while Vinata chose two sons who were superior to Kadrū's sons in strength, energy, brilliance, and prowess.
तस्यै भर्ता वरं प्रादादध्यर्धं पुत्रमीप्सितम्। एवमस्त्विति तं चाह कश्यपं विनता तदा ॥१-१४-९॥
Her husband granted her the boon of one and a half sons she desired. Then Vinata said to Kaśyapa, "So be it."
कृतकृत्या तु विनता लब्ध्वा वीर्याधिकौ सुतौ। कद्रूश्च लब्ध्वा पुत्राणां सहस्रं तुल्यतेजसाम् ॥१-१४-१०॥
Vinata, having achieved her goal, was blessed with two exceedingly powerful sons, while Kadru was blessed with a thousand sons of equal splendor.
धार्यौ प्रयत्नतो गर्भावित्युक्त्वा स महातपाः। ते भार्ये वरसंहृष्टे कश्यपो वनमाविशत् ॥१-१४-११॥
Kaśyapa, the great ascetic, instructed that the embryos should be borne with effort. His wives, delighted with the boon, saw him enter the forest.
कालेन महता कद्रूरण्डानां दशतीर्दश। जनयामास विप्रेन्द्र द्वे अण्डे विनता तदा ॥१-१४-१२॥
Over a long period, Kadru laid a hundred eggs, O best of the twice-born, while Vinata laid two eggs at that time.
तयोरण्डानि निदधुः प्रहृष्टाः परिचारिकाः। सोपस्वेदेषु भाण्डेषु पञ्च वर्षशतानि च ॥१-१४-१३॥
The delighted attendants placed the eggs of those two in vessels covered with sweat for five hundred years.
ततः पञ्चशते काले कद्रूपुत्रा विनिःसृताः। अण्डाभ्यां विनतायास्तु मिथुनं न व्यदृश्यत ॥१-१४-१४॥
Then, after five hundred years, Kadru's sons emerged from their eggs. However, Vinata's eggs did not hatch a pair.
ततः पुत्रार्थिणी देवी व्रीडिता सा तपस्विनी। अण्डं बिभेद विनता तत्र पुत्रमदृक्षत ॥१-१४-१५॥
Then the goddess Vinata, desiring a son and feeling ashamed, broke the egg and saw her son there.
पूर्वार्धकायसम्पन्नमितरेणाप्रकाशता। स पुत्रो रोषसम्पन्नः शशापैनामिति श्रुतिः ॥१-१४-१६॥
The son, endowed with the first half of the body and invisible by the other, filled with anger, cursed him, as the tradition goes.
योऽहमेवं कृतो मातस्त्वया लोभपरीतया। शरीरेणासमग्रोऽद्य तस्माद्दासी भविष्यसि ॥१-१४-१७॥
O mother, who has made me thus, overcome by greed, incomplete in body today, therefore you shall become a servant.
पञ्च वर्षशतान्यस्या यया विस्पर्धसे सह। एष च त्वां सुतो मातर्दास्यत्वान्मोक्षयिष्यति ॥१-१४-१८॥
For five hundred years, you have competed with her, but this son will liberate you from servitude, O mother.
यद्येनमपि मातस्त्वं मामिवाण्डविभेदनात्। न करिष्यस्यदेहं वा व्यङ्गं वापि तपस्विनम् ॥१-१४-१९॥
If you, dear mother, do not make this ascetic bodiless or mutilated like you did to me when breaking the egg.
प्रतिपालयितव्यस्ते जन्मकालोऽस्य धीरया। विशिष्टबलमीप्सन्त्या पञ्चवर्षशतात्परः ॥१-१४-२०॥
The wise should protect your birth time, as it is desired for special strength, beyond five hundred years.
एवं शप्त्वा ततः पुत्रो विनतामन्तरिक्षगः। अरुणो दृश्यते ब्रह्मन्प्रभातसमये सदा ॥१-१४-२१॥
Thus, after cursing, the son of Vinata, Aruna, who travels the sky, is always seen at dawn, O Brahman.
गरुडोऽपि यथाकालं जज्ञे पन्नगसूदनः। स जातमात्रो विनतां परित्यज्य खमाविशत् ॥१-१४-२२॥
Garuda, the mighty serpent-killer, was born at the right time. As soon as he was born, he left his mother Vinatā and soared into the sky.
आदास्यन्नात्मनो भोज्यमन्नं विहितमस्य यत्। विधात्रा भृगुशार्दूल क्षुधितस्य बुभुक्षतः ॥१-१४-२३॥
O tiger among the Bhrigus, the creator has ordained the food and grain for oneself, to be taken by the hungry who desire to eat.

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय। तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय। मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय। ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥ - बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् 1.3.28
