प्रसन्नसलिलैश्चापि ह्रदैश्चित्रैर्विभूषितम्। दिव्यगन्धवहैः पुण्यैर्मारुतैरुपवीजितम् ॥१-२३-३॥

वहास्मानपरं द्वीपं सुरम्यं विपुलोदकम्। त्वं हि देशान्बहून्रम्यान्पतन्पश्यसि खेचर ॥१-२३-७॥

स विचिन्त्याब्रवीत्पक्षी मातरं विनतां तदा। किं कारणं मया मातः कर्तव्यं सर्पभाषितम् ॥१-२३-८॥
sa vicintyābravītpakṣī mātaraṃ vinatāṃ tadā। kiṃ kāraṇaṃ mayā mātaḥ kartavyaṃ sarpabhāṣitam ॥1-23-8॥
[स (sa) - he; विचिन्त्य (vicintya) - having considered; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पक्षी (pakṣī) - bird; मातरं (mātaraṃ) - mother; विनतां (vinatāṃ) - Vinata; तदा (tadā) - then; किं (kiṃ) - what; कारणं (kāraṇaṃ) - reason; मया (mayā) - by me; मातः (mātaḥ) - O mother; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṃ) - to be done; सर्पभाषितम् (sarpabhāṣitam) - snake's words;]
(He, having considered, said to his mother Vinata, the bird, then: "O mother, what reason is there for me to act on the snake's words?")
The bird, after contemplating, asked his mother Vinata: "Mother, why should I heed the snake's words?"

दासीभूतास्म्यनार्याया भगिन्याः पतगोत्तम। पणं वितथमास्थाय सर्पैरुपधिना कृतम् ॥१-२३-९॥

[दासी (dāsī) - maidservant; भूता (bhūtā) - become; अस्मि (asmi) - am; अनार्याया (anāryāyā) - of the ignoble; भगिन्याः (bhaginyāḥ) - sister; पतगोत्तम (patagottama) - O best of birds; पणं (paṇaṃ) - wager; वितथम् (vitatham) - false; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having undertaken; सर्पैः (sarpaiḥ) - by serpents; उपधिना (upadhinā) - by deceit; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(I have become a maidservant of the ignoble sister, O best of birds. A false wager was undertaken, done by serpents with deceit.)

तस्मिंस्तु कथिते मात्रा कारणे गगनेचरः। उवाच वचनं सर्पांस्तेन दुःखेन दुःखितः ॥१-२३-१०॥
tasmiṁstu kathite mātrā kāraṇe gaganecaraḥ। uvāca vacanaṁ sarpāṁstena duḥkhena duḥkhitaḥ ॥1-23-10॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - but; कथिते (kathite) - having been told; मात्रा (mātrā) - by the mother; कारणे (kāraṇe) - reason; गगनेचरः (gaganecaraḥ) - sky-dweller; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वचनं (vacanaṁ) - words; सर्पान् (sarpān) - to the serpents; तेन (tena) - by him; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with sorrow; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - saddened;]
(In that, but having been told by the mother the reason, the sky-dweller said words to the serpents, by him with sorrow, saddened.)
Upon being informed by his mother of the reason, the celestial being, filled with sorrow, spoke to the serpents, expressing his sadness.
किमाहृत्य विदित्वा वा किं वा कृत्वेह पौरुषम्। दास्याद्वो विप्रमुच्येयं सत्यं शंसत लेलिहाः ॥१-२३-११॥
kimāhṛtya viditvā vā kiṃ vā kṛtveha pauruṣam। dāsyādvo vipramucyeyaṃ satyaṃ śaṃsata lelihāḥ ॥1-23-11॥
[किम् (kim) - what; आहृत्य (āhṛtya) - bringing; विदित्वा (viditvā) - knowing; वा (vā) - or; किम् (kim) - what; वा (vā) - or; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - doing; इह (iha) - here; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - effort; दास्यात् (dāsyāt) - will give; वः (vaḥ) - you; विप्रमुच्ये (vipramucye) - be freed; अहम् (aham) - I; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; शंसत (śaṃsata) - tell; लेलिहाः (lelihāḥ) - O Leliha;]
(What bringing or knowing, or what effort doing here, will give you, I be freed? Tell the truth, O Leliha.)
O Leliha, tell me truthfully, what should I bring or know, or what effort should I make here, so that I may be freed?
श्रुत्वा तमब्रुवन्सर्पा आहरामृतमोजसा। ततो दास्याद्विप्रमोक्षो भविता तव खेचर ॥१-२३-१२॥
śrutvā tamabruvansarpā āharāmṛtamojaśā। tato dāsyādvipramokṣo bhavitā tava khecara ॥1-23-12॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तम् (tam) - him; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - the serpents; आहर (āhara) - bring; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; ओजसा (ojaśā) - with strength; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दास्यात् (dāsyāt) - from giving; विप्रमोक्षः (vipramokṣaḥ) - liberation; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; तव (tava) - your; खेचर (khecara) - O sky-dweller;]
(Having heard him, the serpents said, "Bring the nectar with strength. Then, from giving, liberation will be yours, O sky-dweller.")
Upon hearing him, the serpents replied, "Fetch the nectar with might. Then, by giving it, you will attain liberation, O celestial being."
