इत्युक्तो गरुडः सर्पैस्ततो मातरमब्रवीत्। गच्छाम्यमृतमाहर्तुं भक्ष्यमिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१-२४-१॥
ityukto garuḍaḥ sarpaistato mātaramabravīt. gacchāmyamṛtamāhartuṃ bhakṣyamicchāmi veditum ॥1-24-1॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; गरुडः (garuḍaḥ) - Garuda; सर्पैः (sarpaiḥ) - by the serpents; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मातरम् (mātaram) - to mother; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; आहर्तुम् (āhartum) - to bring; भक्ष्यम् (bhakṣyam) - food; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(Thus spoken by the serpents, Garuda then said to his mother, "I go to bring nectar; I wish to know the food.")
Garuda, having been addressed by the serpents, then spoke to his mother, "I am going to fetch the nectar; I want to know what food to bring."

समुद्रकुक्षावेकान्ते निषादालयमुत्तमम्। सहस्राणामनेकानां तान्भुक्त्वामृतमानय ॥१-२४-२॥
samudrakukṣāvekānte niṣādālayamuttamam। sahasrāṇāmanekānāṃ tānbhuktvāmṛtamānaya ॥1-24-2॥
[समुद्रकुक्षौ (samudrakukṣau) - in the ocean's bosom; एकान्ते (ekānte) - in a secluded place; निषादालयम् (niṣādālayam) - Nishada's abode; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; सहस्राणाम् (sahasrāṇām) - of thousands; अनेकानाम् (anekānām) - of many; तान् (tān) - them; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having enjoyed; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; आनय (ānaya) - bring;]
(In the ocean's bosom, in a secluded place, Nishada's excellent abode, having enjoyed the nectar of thousands of many, bring them.)
In the secluded abode of Nishada, located in the ocean's bosom, enjoy the nectar of countless thousands and bring them.
न तु ते ब्राह्मणं हन्तुं कार्या बुद्धिः कथञ्चन। अवध्यः सर्वभूतानां ब्राह्मणो ह्यनलोपमः ॥१-२४-३॥
na tu te brāhmaṇaṃ hantuṃ kāryā buddhiḥ kathaṃcana। avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ brāhmaṇo hyanalopamaḥ ॥1-24-3॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - a Brahmin; हन्तुं (hantuṃ) - to kill; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intention; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) - not to be killed; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṃ) - of all beings; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brahmin; हि (hi) - indeed; अनलोपमः (analopamaḥ) - like fire;]
(But your intention should not be to kill a Brahmin in any way. A Brahmin is not to be killed by all beings, indeed like fire.)
However, you should never intend to kill a Brahmin. A Brahmin is inviolable among all beings, indeed comparable to fire.
अग्निरर्को विषं शस्त्रं विप्रो भवति कोपितः। भूतानामग्रभुग्विप्रो वर्णश्रेष्ठः पिता गुरुः ॥१-२४-४॥
agnirarko viṣaṃ śastraṃ vipro bhavati kopitaḥ। bhūtānāmagrabhugvipro varṇaśreṣṭhaḥ pitā guruḥ ॥1-24-4॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; अर्कः (arkaḥ) - sun; विषं (viṣaṃ) - poison; शस्त्रं (śastraṃ) - weapon; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brahmin; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; कोपितः (kopitaḥ) - angry; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; अग्रभुक् (agrabhuk) - foremost consumer; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brahmin; वर्णश्रेष्ठः (varṇaśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of castes; पिता (pitā) - father; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher;]
(Fire, sun, poison, weapon, Brahmin becomes angry. Of beings, the Brahmin is the foremost consumer, best of castes, father, teacher.)
When a Brahmin becomes angry, he is like fire, the sun, poison, or a weapon. Among beings, the Brahmin is the foremost consumer, the best of castes, a father, and a teacher.

यथाहमभिजानीयां ब्राह्मणं लक्षणैः शुभैः। तन्मे कारणतो मातः पृच्छतो वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१-२४-५॥
yathāhamabhijānīyāṃ brāhmaṇaṃ lakṣaṇaiḥ śubhaiḥ| tanme kāraṇato mātaḥ pṛcchato vaktumarhasi ॥1-24-5॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; अहम् (aham) - I; अभिजानीयाम् (abhijānīyām) - would recognize; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - a Brahmin; लक्षणैः (lakṣaṇaiḥ) - by characteristics; शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - auspicious; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; कारणतः (kāraṇataḥ) - by reason; मातः (mātaḥ) - O Mother; पृच्छतः (pṛcchataḥ) - asking; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(As I would recognize a Brahmin by auspicious characteristics, you should speak to me by reason, O Mother, asking.)
O Mother, please explain to me the auspicious characteristics by which I can recognize a Brahmin, as I am asking you for this reason.

यस्ते कण्ठमनुप्राप्तो निगीर्णं बडिशं यथा। दहेदङ्गारवत्पुत्र तं विद्याद्बाह्मणर्षभम् ॥१-२४-६॥
yaste kaṇṭhamanuprāpto nigīrṇaṃ baḍiśaṃ yathā। dahedaṅgāravatputra taṃ vidyādbāhmaṇarṣabham ॥1-24-6॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; ते (te) - your; कण्ठम् (kaṇṭham) - throat; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - entered; निगीर्णम् (nigīrṇam) - swallowed; बडिशम् (baḍiśam) - hook; यथा (yathā) - like; दहेत् (dahet) - burns; अङ्गारवत् (aṅgāravat) - like a burning coal; पुत्र (putra) - son; तम् (tam) - him; विद्यात् (vidyāt) - know; बाह्मणर्षभम् (bāhmaṇarṣabham) - the best among Brahmins;]
(Who has entered your throat, swallowed like a hook, burns like a burning coal, son, know him as the best among Brahmins.)
The one who has entered your throat and is swallowed like a hook, burns like a burning coal. O son, know him to be the best among Brahmins.

प्रोवाच चैनं विनता पुत्रहार्दादिदं वचः। जानन्त्यप्यतुलं वीर्यमाशीर्वादसमन्वितम् ॥१-२४-७॥
provāca cainaṃ vinatā putrahārdādidaṃ vacaḥ. jānantyapyatulaṃ vīryamāśīrvādasamanvitam ॥1-24-7॥
[प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; विनता (vinatā) - Vinatā; पुत्रहार्दात् (putrahārdāt) - from the heart of her son; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; जानन्ति (jānanti) - knowing; अपि (api) - even; अतुलं (atulaṃ) - immeasurable; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; आशीर्वादसमन्वितम् (āśīrvādasamanvitam) - endowed with blessings;]
(Vinatā said this speech to him from the heart of her son, knowing even the immeasurable strength endowed with blessings.)
Vinatā, understanding the immense strength and blessings, spoke these words to him from her son's heart.
पक्षौ ते मारुतः पातु चन्द्रः पृष्ठं तु पुत्रक। शिरस्तु पातु ते वह्निर्भास्करः सर्वमेव तु ॥१-२४-८॥
pakṣau te mārutaḥ pātu candraḥ pṛṣṭhaṃ tu putraka। śirastu pātu te vahnirbhāskaraḥ sarvameva tu ॥1-24-8॥
[पक्षौ (pakṣau) - wings; ते (te) - your; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - wind; पातु (pātu) - may protect; चन्द्रः (candraḥ) - moon; पृष्ठं (pṛṣṭham) - back; तु (tu) - but; पुत्रक (putraka) - dear son; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; तु (tu) - but; पातु (pātu) - may protect; ते (te) - your; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - fire; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - sun; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but;]
(May the wind protect your wings, the moon your back, dear son. But may the fire protect your head, and the sun everything indeed.)

अहं च ते सदा पुत्र शान्तिस्वस्तिपरायणा। अरिष्टं व्रज पन्थानं वत्स कार्यार्थसिद्धये ॥१-२४-९॥
ahaṁ ca te sadā putra śāntisvastiparāyaṇā। ariṣṭaṁ vraja panthānaṁ vatsa kāryārthasiddhaye ॥1-24-9॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; सदा (sadā) - always; पुत्र (putra) - son; शान्तिस्वस्तिपरायणा (śāntisvastiparāyaṇā) - devoted to peace and welfare; अरिष्टं (ariṣṭaṁ) - without obstacles; व्रज (vraja) - go; पन्थानं (panthānaṁ) - path; वत्स (vatsa) - dear; कार्यार्थसिद्धये (kāryārthasiddhaye) - for the accomplishment of objectives;]
(I and your always son devoted to peace and welfare. Without obstacles go path dear for the accomplishment of objectives.)
My dear son, I am always devoted to your peace and welfare. Go on your path without obstacles, dear, for the accomplishment of your objectives.
ततः स मातुर्वचनं निशम्य; वितत्य पक्षौ नभ उत्पपात। ततो निषादान्बलवानुपागम; द्बुभुक्षितः काल इवान्तको महान् ॥१-२४-१०॥
tataḥ sa mātur vacanaṃ niśamya; vitatya pakṣau nabha utpapāta. tato niṣādān balavān upāgama; bubhukṣitaḥ kāla ivāntako mahān ॥1-24-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; मातुः (mātuḥ) - mother's; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - words; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; वितत्य (vitatya) - spreading; पक्षौ (pakṣau) - wings; नभः (nabhaḥ) - sky; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - flew up; ततः (tataḥ) - then; निषादान् (niṣādān) - Nishadas; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; उपागम (upāgama) - approached; बुभुक्षितः (bubhukṣitaḥ) - hungry; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; इव (iva) - like; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - death; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Then he, having heard his mother's words, spread his wings and flew up into the sky. Then the strong one approached the Nishadas, hungry like the great death time.)

स तान्निषादानुपसंहरंस्तदा; रजः समुद्धूय नभःस्पृशं महत्। समुद्रकुक्षौ च विशोषयन्पयः; समीपगान्भूमिधरान्विचालयन् ॥१-२४-११॥
sa tānniṣādānupasaṃharaṃstadā; rajaḥ samuddhūya nabhaḥspṛśaṃ mahat| samudrakukṣau ca viśoṣayanpayaḥ; samīpagānbhūmidharānvicālayan ॥1-24-11॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - those; निषादान् (niṣādān) - Nishadas; उपसंहरन् (upasaṃharan) - destroying; तदा (tadā) - then; रजः (rajaḥ) - dust; समुद्धूय (samuddhūya) - raising; नभःस्पृशं (nabhaḥspṛśaṃ) - sky-touching; महत् (mahat) - great; समुद्रकुक्षौ (samudrakukṣau) - in the ocean's belly; च (ca) - and; विशोषयन् (viśoṣayan) - drying up; पयः (payaḥ) - water; समीपगान् (samīpagān) - nearby; भूमिधरान् (bhūmidharān) - mountains; विचालयन् (vicālayan) - shaking;]
(He then, destroying those Nishadas, raising great sky-touching dust, drying up the water in the ocean's belly, shaking the nearby mountains.)

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; चक्रे (cakre) - made; महदाननं (mahādānanaṃ) - great face; तदा (tadā) - then; निषादमार्गं (niṣādamārgaṃ) - Nishada's path; प्रतिरुध्य (pratirudhya) - blocking; पक्षिराट् (pakṣirāṭ) - king of birds; ततः (tataḥ) - then; निषादाः (niṣādāḥ) - Nishadas; त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - swiftly; प्रवव्रजु (pravavraju) - departed; यतः (yataḥ) - where; मुखं (mukhaṃ) - face; तस्य (tasya) - his; भुजङ्गभोजिनः (bhujaṅgabhojinaḥ) - eater of serpents;]
(Then he made a great face; blocking Nishada's path, the king of birds. Then the Nishadas swiftly departed; where was the face of the eater of serpents.)

[तद् (tad) - that; आननम् (ānanaṃ) - face; विवृतम् (vivṛtam) - opened; अति (ati) - very; प्रमाणवत् (pramāṇavat) - large; समभ्ययुः (samabhyayuḥ) - approached; गगनम् (gaganam) - sky; इव (iva) - like; आर्दिताः (ārditāḥ) - distressed; खगाः (khagāḥ) - birds; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands; पवन (pavana) - wind; रजः (rajaḥ) - dust; भ्रमोहिताः (bhramohitāḥ) - confused; महानिल (mahānila) - great wind; प्रचलित (pracalita) - shaken; पादपे (pādape) - trees; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(That face, very large and opened, was approached by birds distressed like the sky, confused by the dust of the wind, in thousands, in the forest where the great wind had shaken the trees.)

(Then the bird, the enemy tormentor, gathered swiftly, the mighty one, destroying various fish eaters, hungry, the lord of sky wanderers, then.)
