स चक्रं क्षुरपर्यन्तमपश्यदमृतान्तिके। परिभ्रमन्तमनिशं तीक्ष्णधारमयस्मयम् ॥१-२९-२॥

(The lustrous and terrible machine, exceedingly terrible in form, for cutting by the destroyers of Soma, was well-constructed by the gods.)
The gods constructed a fearsome and radiant machine, designed to cut down the enemies of Soma, with an exceedingly terrifying appearance.
तस्यान्तरं स दृष्ट्वैव पर्यवर्तत खेचरः। अरान्तरेणाभ्यपतत्सङ्क्षिप्याङ्गं क्षणेन ह ॥१-२९-४॥
tasyāntaraṃ sa dṛṣṭvaiva paryavartata khecaraḥ। arāntareṇābhyapatatsaṅkṣipyāṅgaṃ kṣaṇena ha ॥1-29-4॥

चक्षुर्विषौ महावीर्यौ नित्यक्रुद्धौ तरस्विनौ। रक्षार्थमेवामृतस्य ददर्श भुजगोत्तमौ ॥१-२९-६॥
cakṣurviṣau mahāvīryau nityakruddhau tarasvinau। rakṣārthamevāmṛtasya dadarśa bhujagottamau ॥1-29-6॥

The two are always with agitated and unblinking eyes; if either of them sees someone, that person is instantly reduced to ashes.
तयोश्चक्षूंषि रजसा सुपर्णस्तूर्णमावृणोत्। अदृष्टरूपस्तौ चापि सर्वतः पर्यकालयत् ॥१-२९-८॥
tayoś cakṣūṃṣi rajasā suparṇas tūrṇam āvṛṇot। adṛṣṭarūpas tau cāpi sarvataḥ paryakālayat ॥1-29-8॥

(Suparna quickly covered their eyes with dust. Unseen, he also surrounded them everywhere.)

तयोरङ्गे समाक्रम्य वैनतेयोऽन्तरिक्षगः। आच्छिनत्तरसा मध्ये सोममभ्यद्रवत्ततः ॥१-२९-९॥

(Having attacked on the body of the two, Garuda, the sky-goer, snatched Soma with force in the middle and then rushed.)
Garuda, the celestial bird, attacked the bodies of the two, snatched the Soma with great force in the middle, and then swiftly moved away.
समुत्पाट्यामृतं तत्तु वैनतेयस्ततो बली। उत्पपात जवेनैव यन्त्रमुन्मथ्य वीर्यवान् ॥१-२९-१०॥
samutpāṭyāmṛtaṃ tattu vainateyastato balī। utpapāta javenaiva yantramunmathya vīryavān ॥1-29-10॥

(Having uprooted the nectar, then the strong son of Vinata flew up with speed, indeed having broken the mechanism, powerful.)
The powerful son of Vinata, having uprooted the nectar, then flew up swiftly, breaking the mechanism with his strength.
अपीत्वैवामृतं पक्षी परिगृह्याशु वीर्यवान्। अगच्छदपरिश्रान्त आवार्यार्कप्रभां खगः ॥१-२९-११॥
apītvāivāmṛtaṃ pakṣī parigṛhyāśu vīryavān। agacchadapariśrānta āvāryārkaprabhāṃ khagaḥ ॥1-29-11॥

(Having drunk the nectar, the powerful bird, having taken it, quickly went untired, blocking the sunlight.)

विष्णुना तु तदाकाशे वैनतेयः समेयिवान्। तस्य नारायणस्तुष्टस्तेनालौल्येन कर्मणा ॥१-२९-१२॥

तमुवाचाव्ययो देवो वरदोऽस्मीति खेचरम्। स वव्रे तव तिष्ठेयमुपरीत्यन्तरिक्षगः ॥१-२९-१३॥
tamuvācāvyayo devo varado'smīti khecaram। sa vavre tava tiṣṭheyamuparītyantarikṣagaḥ ॥1-29-13॥

(The imperishable god said to him, "I am the boon-giver to the sky-goer." He chose, "I may remain above your space-traveler.")
The imperishable god addressed him, declaring himself as the boon-giver to the celestial being. The celestial being then requested to remain above as a space-traveler.
उवाच चैनं भूयोऽपि नारायणमिदं वचः। अजरश्चामरश्च स्याममृतेन विनाप्यहम् ॥१-२९-१४॥
uvāca cainaṃ bhūyo'pi nārāyaṇamidaṃ vacaḥ। ajaraścāmaraśca syāmamṛtena vināpyaham ॥1-29-14॥

(He said this again to Nārāyaṇa: "May I be ageless and immortal, even without nectar.")
He again addressed Nārāyaṇa with these words: "May I become ageless and immortal, even without the nectar."
प्रतिगृह्य वरौ तौ च गरुडो विष्णुमब्रवीत्। भवतेऽपि वरं दद्मि वृणीतां भगवानपि ॥१-२९-१५॥
pratigṛhya varau tau ca garuḍo viṣṇumabravīt। bhavate'pi varaṃ dadmi vṛṇītāṃ bhagavānapi ॥1-29-15॥

(Having accepted the boons, Garuda said to Vishnu, "I also give you a boon; may the Lord also choose.")
After accepting the boons, Garuda said to Vishnu, "I will also grant you a boon; let the Lord choose as well."
तं वव्रे वाहनं कृष्णो गरुत्मन्तं महाबलम्। ध्वजं च चक्रे भगवानुपरि स्थास्यसीति तम् ॥१-२९-१६॥
taṁ vavre vāhanaṁ kṛṣṇo garutmantaṁ mahābalam। dhvajaṁ ca cakre bhagavān upari sthāsyasīti tam ॥1-29-16॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; वाहनं (vāhanam) - vehicle; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; गरुत्मन्तं (garutmantaṁ) - Garuda; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - mighty; ध्वजं (dhvajam) - flag; च (ca) - and; चक्रे (cakre) - made; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; उपरि (upari) - above; स्थास्यसि (sthāsyasi) - you will stand; इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Krishna chose that mighty Garuda as his vehicle. The Lord made the flag and said, "You will stand above him.")
Krishna selected the mighty Garuda as his vehicle and declared that Garuda would stand above as his emblem on the flag.
अनुपत्य खगं त्विन्द्रो वज्रेणाङ्गेऽभ्यताडयत्। विहङ्गमं सुरामित्रं हरन्तममृतं बलात् ॥१-२९-१७॥
anupatya khagaṃ tvindro vajreṇāṅge'bhyatāḍayat। vihaṅgamaṃ surāmitraṃ harantamamṛtaṃ balāt ॥1-29-17॥
[अनुपत्य (anupatya) - following; खगं (khagam) - bird; त्वा (tvā) - you; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; वज्रेण (vajreṇa) - with thunderbolt; अङ्गे (aṅge) - on the body; अभ्यताडयत् (abhyatāḍayat) - struck; विहङ्गमं (vihaṅgamam) - bird; सुरामित्रं (surāmitram) - enemy of gods; हरन्तम् (harantam) - taking away; अमृतं (amṛtam) - nectar; बलात् (balāt) - by force;]
(Following the bird, Indra struck you on the body with a thunderbolt; the bird, enemy of gods, taking away the nectar by force.)
Indra, pursuing the bird who was the enemy of the gods and was forcibly taking away the nectar, struck it on the body with his thunderbolt.
तमुवाचेन्द्रमाक्रन्दे गरुडः पततां वरः। प्रहसञ्श्लक्ष्णया वाचा तथा वज्रसमाहतः ॥१-२९-१८॥
tamuvācendramākrande garuḍaḥ patatāṃ varaḥ। prahasañślakṣṇayā vācā tathā vajrasamāhataḥ ॥1-29-18॥

(To him, Garuda, the best of the birds, said in the presence of Indra, smiling with gentle speech, thus struck by the thunderbolt.)

ऋषेर्मानं करिष्यामि वज्रं यस्यास्थिसम्भवम्। वज्रस्य च करिष्यामि तव चैव शतक्रतो ॥१-२९-१९॥
ṛṣermānaṃ kariṣyāmi vajraṃ yasyāsthisambhavam। vajrasya ca kariṣyāmi tava caiva śatakrato ॥1-29-19॥
[ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; मानं (mānaṃ) - honor; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; वज्रं (vajraṃ) - thunderbolt; यस्य (yasya) - whose; अस्थि (asthi) - bone; सम्भवम् (sambhavam) - originated; वज्रस्य (vajrasya) - of the thunderbolt; च (ca) - and; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O Indra;]
(I will honor the sage, and make the thunderbolt whose origin is the bone. I will also make your thunderbolt, O Indra.)

एष पत्रं त्यजाम्येकं यस्यान्तं नोपलप्स्यसे। न हि वज्रनिपातेन रुजा मेऽस्ति कदाचन ॥१-२९-२०॥
eṣa patraṃ tyajāmyekaṃ yasyāntaṃ nopalapsyase। na hi vajranipātena rujā me'sti kadācana ॥1-29-20॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; पत्रं (patraṃ) - letter; त्यजामि (tyajāmi) - I abandon; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; यस्य (yasya) - whose; अन्तं (antaṃ) - end; न (na) - not; उपलप्स्यसे (upalapsyase) - you will obtain; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; वज्रनिपातेन (vajranipātena) - by thunderbolt's strike; रुजा (rujā) - pain; मे (me) - my; अस्ति (asti) - is; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(This letter I abandon, one whose end you will not obtain. Indeed, by thunderbolt's strike, pain is not ever mine.)
I am leaving this letter, the end of which you will never find. Indeed, even if struck by a thunderbolt, I will never feel pain.
तत्र तं सर्वभूतानि विस्मितान्यब्रुवंस्तदा। सुरूपं पत्रमालक्ष्य सुपर्णोऽयं भवत्विति ॥१-२९-२१॥
tatra taṃ sarvabhūtāni vismitānyabruvaṃstadā। surūpaṃ patramālakṣya suparṇo'yaṃ bhavatviti ॥1-29-21॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; तं (taṃ) - him; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; विस्मितानि (vismitāni) - astonished; अब्रुवंस्तदा (abruvaṃstadā) - said then; सुरूपं (surūpaṃ) - beautiful form; पत्रमालक्ष्य (patramālakṣya) - seeing the wings; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparna; अयम् (ayam) - this; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus;]
(There, all beings, astonished, said then: "Seeing the beautiful form and wings, let this be Suparna.")

(Having seen that wonderful thing, the thousand-eyed Purandara, thinking this great being to be a bird, spoke thus.)
Upon witnessing that astonishing sight, the thousand-eyed Purandara, considering this great being as a bird, expressed his thoughts.

[बलम् (balam) - strength; विज्ञातुम् (vijñātum) - to know; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - your; परम् (param) - supreme; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; च (ca) - and; अनन्तम् (anantam) - endless; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सह (saha) - together; खगोत्तम (khagottama) - O best of birds;]
