सख्यं मेऽस्तु त्वया देव यथेच्छसि पुरंदर। बलं तु मम जानीहि महच्चासह्यमेव च ॥१-३०-१॥
sakhyaṁ me'stu tvayā deva yathecchasi puraṁdara। balaṁ tu mama jānīhi mahaccāsahyameva ca ॥1-30-1॥
[सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; मे (me) - my; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; देव (deva) - O god; यथा (yathā) - as; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; पुरंदर (puraṁdara) - Indra; बलम् (balam) - strength; तु (tu) - but; मम (mama) - my; जानीहि (jānīhi) - know; महत् (mahat) - great; असह्यम् (asahyam) - unbearable; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Let there be friendship with you, O god, as you wish, O Indra. But know my strength, which is indeed great and unbearable.)
O Indra, let there be friendship between us as you desire. However, you must recognize that my strength is immense and truly formidable.
कामं नैतत्प्रशंसन्ति सन्तः स्वबलसंस्तवम्। गुणसङ्कीर्तनं चापि स्वयमेव शतक्रतो ॥१-३०-२॥
kāmaṃ naitatpraśaṃsanti santaḥ svabalasaṃstavam। guṇasaṅkīrtanaṃ cāpi svayameva śatakrato ॥1-30-2॥
[कामम् (kāmaṃ) - desire; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - praise; सन्तः (santaḥ) - wise ones; स्वबलसंस्तवम् (svabalasaṃstavam) - self-strength praise; गुणसङ्कीर्तनम् (guṇasaṅkīrtanam) - virtue singing; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; एव (eva) - indeed; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O Indra;]
(Desire, not this praise wise ones self-strength praise. Virtue singing and also oneself indeed O Indra.)
O Indra, wise ones do not praise self-strength or sing of virtues by themselves.
सखेति कृत्वा तु सखे पृष्टो वक्ष्याम्यहं त्वया। न ह्यात्मस्तवसंयुक्तं वक्तव्यमनिमित्ततः ॥१-३०-३॥
sakheti kṛtvā tu sakhe pṛṣṭo vakṣyāmyahaṃ tvayā। na hyātma stavasanyuktaṃ vaktavyamanimittataḥ ॥1-30-3॥

(O friend, having done so, I will tell you, O friend, as you have asked. Indeed, your self is not to be spoken of without reason.)

सपर्वतवनामुर्वीं ससागरवनामिमाम्। पक्षनाड्यैकया शक्र त्वां चैवात्रावलम्बिनम् ॥१-३०-४॥
saparvatavanāmurvīṃ sasāgaravanāmimām। pakṣanāḍyaikayā śakra tvāṃ caivātrāvalambinam ॥1-30-4॥
[सपर्वतवनाम् (saparvatavanām) - with mountains and forests; उर्वीम् (urvīm) - earth; ससागरवनाम् (sasāgaravanām) - with oceans and forests; इमाम् (imām) - this; पक्षनाड्यैकया (pakṣanāḍyaikayā) - by one winged artery; शक्र (śakra) - Indra; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; अवलम्बिनम् (avalambinam) - supporting;]
(With mountains and forests, this earth with oceans and forests, by one winged artery, Indra, you indeed are supporting here.)
Indra, you are supporting this earth, which is filled with mountains, forests, oceans, and forests, by a single winged artery.
सर्वान्सम्पिण्डितान्वापि लोकान्सस्थाणुजङ्गमान्। वहेयमपरिश्रान्तो विद्धीदं मे महद्बलम् ॥१-३०-५॥
sarvān sampiṇḍitān vā api lokān sathāṇujaṅgamān। vaheyam apariśrānto viddhīdaṃ me mahadbalam ॥1-30-5॥

(Know this my great strength: I would carry all the combined worlds, both immovable and movable, untiring.)
Understand the extent of my great strength: I am capable of carrying all the worlds, whether they are stationary or moving, without any fatigue.

(Thus spoken words to the hero, the crowned one, the best of the glorious, said Śaunaka, the lord of the gods, benefactor of all beings, the lord.)
Thus, the crowned hero, the best among the glorious, was addressed by Śaunaka, the lord of the gods and benefactor of all beings.
प्रतिगृह्यतामिदानीं मे सख्यमानन्त्यमुत्तमम्। न कार्यं तव सोमेन मम सोमः प्रदीयताम् ॥ अस्मांस्ते हि प्रबाधेयुर्येभ्यो दद्याद्भवानिमम् ॥१-३०-७॥
pratigṛhyatām idānīṃ me sakhyam ānantyam uttamam। na kāryaṃ tava somena mama somaḥ pradīyatām ॥ asmāṃs te hi prabādheyur yebhyo dadyād bhavān imam ॥1-30-7॥
[प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigṛhyatām) - let it be accepted; इदानीम् (idānīṃ) - now; मे (me) - my; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; आनन्त्यम् (ānantyam) - eternal; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; न (na) - not; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - necessary; तव (tava) - your; सोमेन (somena) - with soma; मम (mama) - my; सोमः (somaḥ) - soma; प्रदीयताम् (pradīyatām) - let it be given; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रबाधेयुः (prabādheyur) - would oppress; येभ्यः (yebhyaḥ) - from whom; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - would give; भवान् (bhavān) - you; इमम् (imam) - this;]
(Let my supreme eternal friendship be accepted now. It is not necessary for your soma; let my soma be given. They would indeed oppress us from whom you would give this.)

किञ्चित्कारणमुद्दिश्य सोमोऽयं नीयते मया। न दास्यामि समादातुं सोमं कस्मैचिदप्यहम् ॥१-३०-८॥
kiñcitkāraṇamuddiśya somo'yaṃ nīyate mayā। na dāsyāmi samādātuṃ somaṃ kasmaicidapyaham ॥1-30-8॥
[किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - some; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having aimed; सोमः (somaḥ) - Soma; अयम् (ayam) - this; नीयते (nīyate) - is being taken; मया (mayā) - by me; न (na) - not; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; समादातुम् (samādātum) - to anyone; सोमम् (somam) - Soma; कस्मैचित् (kasmaicit) - to anyone; अपि (api) - even; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(For some reason, this Soma is being taken by me. I will not give Soma to anyone.)
For a certain reason, I am taking this Soma. I will not give Soma to anyone at all.
यत्रेमं तु सहस्राक्ष निक्षिपेयमहं स्वयम्। त्वमादाय ततस्तूर्णं हरेथास्त्रिदशेश्वर ॥१-३०-९॥
yatremaṃ tu sahasrākṣa nikṣipeyamahaṃ svayam। tvamādāya tatastūrṇaṃ harethāstridaśeśvara ॥1-30-9॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; इमं (imam) - this; तु (tu) - but; सहस्राक्ष (sahasrākṣa) - O thousand-eyed one; निक्षिपेयम् (nikṣipeyam) - I would place; अहम् (aham) - I; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; हरेथाः (harethāḥ) - you should take away; त्रिदशेश्वर (tridaśeśvara) - O lord of the gods;]
(Where, O thousand-eyed one, I would place this myself, you, having taken it, should then quickly take it away, O lord of the gods.)

वाक्येनानेन तुष्टोऽहं यत्त्वयोक्तमिहाण्डज। यदिच्छसि वरं मत्तस्तद्गृहाण खगोत्तम ॥१-३०-१०॥
vākyenānena tuṣṭo'haṃ yattvayoktamihāṇḍaja। yadicchasi varaṃ mattastadgṛhāṇa khagottama ॥1-30-10॥
[वाक्येन (vākyena) - by the sentence; अनेन (anena) - by this; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; अहम् (aham) - I; यत् (yat) - that; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; इह (iha) - here; अण्डज (aṇḍaja) - O bird; यत् (yat) - what; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; वरम् (varam) - boon; मतः (mataḥ) - from me; तत् (tat) - that; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; खग (khaga) - O bird; उत्तम (uttama) - best;]
(By this sentence, I am pleased, O bird, with what you have spoken here. Whatever boon you desire from me, accept that, O best of birds.)
I am pleased with what you have said here, O bird. Ask for any boon you desire from me, and it shall be granted, O best of birds.

ityuktaḥ pratyuvācedaṃ kadrūputrān anusmaran। smṛtvā caivopadhikṛtaṃ mātur dāsyanimittataḥ ॥1-30-11॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कद्रू (kadrū) - Kadru; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering; स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - having remembered; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपधिकृतं (upadhikṛtaṃ) - deceived; मातुः (mātuḥ) - mother's; दास्य (dāsya) - servitude; निमित्ततः (nimittataḥ) - because of;]
(Thus spoken, he replied this, remembering the sons of Kadru, having remembered indeed the deception because of the mother's servitude.)

ईशोऽहमपि सर्वस्य करिष्यामि तु तेऽर्थिताम्। भवेयुर्भुजगाः शक्र मम भक्ष्या महाबलाः ॥१-३०-१२॥
īśo'hamapi sarvasya kariṣyāmi tu te'rthitām। bhaveyurbhujagāḥ śakra mama bhakṣyā mahābalāḥ ॥1-30-12॥
[ईशः (īśaḥ) - lord; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - will do; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; अर्थिताम् (arthitām) - request; भवेयुः (bhaveyuḥ) - may become; भुजगाः (bhujagāḥ) - serpents; शक्र (śakra) - O Indra; मम (mama) - my; भक्ष्याः (bhakṣyāḥ) - food; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty;]
(I, the lord, will also fulfill your request for all. O Indra, the serpents may become my food, mighty ones.)

[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अन्वगच्छत् (anvagacchat) - followed; तं (taṃ) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दानवसूदनः (dānavasūdanaḥ) - destroyer of demons; हरिष्यामि (hariṣyāmi) - I will take away; विनिक्षिप्तं (vinikṣiptaṃ) - deposited; सोमम् (somam) - Soma; इति (iti) - thus; अनुभाष्य (anubhāṣya) - having spoken; तम् (tam) - to him;]
(Thus having spoken, the destroyer of demons followed him, then saying, "I will take away the deposited Soma.")

आजगाम ततस्तूर्णं सुपर्णो मातुरन्तिकम्। अथ सर्पानुवाचेदं सर्वान्परमहृष्टवत् ॥१-३०-१४॥
ājagāma tatastūrṇaṃ suparṇo māturantikam। atha sarpānuvācedaṃ sarvānaparamahṛṣṭavat ॥1-30-14॥
[आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparna; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near; अथ (atha) - then; सर्पान् (sarpān) - the serpents; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; परम (parama) - very; हृष्टवत् (hṛṣṭavat) - pleased;]
(Then Suparna quickly came near his mother. Then he said this to all the serpents, very pleased.)
Suparna swiftly approached his mother and, in great delight, addressed all the serpents.
इदमानीतममृतं निक्षेप्स्यामि कुशेषु वः। स्नाता मङ्गलसंयुक्तास्ततः प्राश्नीत पन्नगाः ॥१-३०-१५॥
idamānītamamṛtaṃ nikṣepsyāmi kuśeṣu vaḥ| snātā maṅgalasaṃyuktāstataḥ prāśnīta pannagāḥ ॥1-30-15॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; आनीतम् (ānītam) - brought; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; निक्षेप्स्यामि (nikṣepsyāmi) - I will place; कुशेषु (kuśeṣu) - on the kusha grass; वः (vaḥ) - for you; स्नाताः (snātāḥ) - bathed; मङ्गलसंयुक्ताः (maṅgalasaṃyuktāḥ) - endowed with auspiciousness; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राश्नीत (prāśnīta) - you may consume; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - O serpents;]
(I will place this brought nectar on the kusha grass for you. Bathed and endowed with auspiciousness, then you may consume, O serpents.)

अदासी चैव मातेयमद्यप्रभृति चास्तु मे। यथोक्तं भवतामेतद्वचो मे प्रतिपादितम् ॥१-३०-१६॥
adāsī caiva māteyam adyaprabhr̥ti cāstu me। yathoktaṃ bhavatāmetad vaco me pratipāditam ॥1-30-16॥
[अदासी (adāsī) - you have given; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; माता (mātā) - mother; इयम् (iyam) - this; अद्यप्रभृति (adyaprabhr̥ti) - from today onwards; च (ca) - and; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; मे (me) - my; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as stated; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; एतत् (etat) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; मे (me) - my; प्रतिपादितम् (pratipāditam) - has been fulfilled;]
(You have given, and indeed, mother, let this be mine from today onwards. As stated by you, this word of mine has been fulfilled.)

ततः स्नातुं गताः सर्पाः प्रत्युक्त्वा तं तथेत्युत। शक्रोऽप्यमृतमाक्षिप्य जगाम त्रिदिवं पुनः ॥१-३०-१७॥
tataḥ snātuṃ gatāḥ sarpāḥ pratyuktvā taṃ tathetyuta। śakro'pyamṛtamākṣipya jagāma tridivaṃ punaḥ ॥1-30-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्नातुम् (snātum) - to bathe; गताः (gatāḥ) - went; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - serpents; प्रत्युक्त्वा (pratyuktvā) - having replied; तम् (tam) - to him; तथेत्युत (tathetyuta) - so be it; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; अपि (api) - also; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; आक्षिप्य (ākṣipya) - having seized; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - to heaven; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Then the serpents, having replied to him 'so be it', went to bathe. Indra also, having seized the nectar, went to heaven again.)
Then the serpents agreed and went to bathe, while Indra seized the nectar and returned to heaven once more.
अथागतास्तमुद्देशं सर्पाः सोमार्थिनस्तदा। स्नाताश्च कृतजप्याश्च प्रहृष्टाः कृतमङ्गलाः ॥१-३०-१८॥
athāgatāstamuddeśaṃ sarpāḥ somārthinastadā| snātāśca kṛtajapyāśca prahṛṣṭāḥ kṛtamaṅgalāḥ ॥1-30-18॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - arrived; तम् (tam) - that; उद्देशम् (uddeśam) - place; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - serpents; सोमार्थिनः (somārthinaḥ) - seeking soma; तदा (tadā) - then; स्नाताः (snātāḥ) - bathed; च (ca) - and; कृतजप्याः (kṛtajapyāḥ) - having performed prayers; च (ca) - and; प्रहृष्टाः (prahṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; कृतमङ्गलाः (kṛtamaṅgalāḥ) - having performed auspicious rites;]
(Then the serpents, seeking soma, arrived at that place, bathed, performed prayers, and were joyful, having performed auspicious rites.)
Then the serpents, in search of soma, arrived at the designated place. They bathed, performed their prayers, and were filled with joy after completing the auspicious rites.
तद्विज्ञाय हृतं सर्पाः प्रतिमायाकृतं च तत्। सोमस्थानमिदं चेति दर्भांस्ते लिलिहुस्तदा ॥१-३०-१९॥
tadvijñāya hṛtaṃ sarpāḥ pratimāyākṛtaṃ ca tat। somasthānamidaṃ ceti darbhāṃste lilihustadā ॥1-30-19॥
[तत् (tat) - that; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - knowing; हृतं (hṛtaṃ) - stolen; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - serpents; प्रतिमायाकृतं (pratimāyākṛtaṃ) - made into an image; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; सोमस्थानम् (somasthānam) - Soma place; इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; दर्भान् (darbhān) - sacred grass; ते (te) - they; लिलिहुः (lilihuḥ) - licked; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Knowing that it was stolen, the serpents made it into an image and said, 'This is the Soma place,' and then they licked the sacred grass.)
Upon realizing that it was stolen, the serpents crafted an image and declared, 'This is the Soma place,' after which they licked the sacred grass.
ततो द्वैधीकृता जिह्वा सर्पाणां तेन कर्मणा। अभवंश्चामृतस्पर्शाद्दर्भास्तेऽथ पवित्रिणः ॥१-३०-२०॥
tato dvaidhīkṛtā jihvā sarpāṇāṃ tena karmaṇā। abhavaṃścāmṛtasparśāddarbhāste'tha pavitriṇaḥ ॥1-30-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वैधीकृता (dvaidhīkṛtā) - split in two; जिह्वा (jihvā) - tongue; सर्पाणाम् (sarpāṇām) - of serpents; तेन (tena) - by that; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - action; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; च (ca) - and; अमृत (amṛta) - nectar; स्पर्शात् (sparśāt) - by touch; दर्भाः (darbhāḥ) - sacred grass; ते (te) - they; अथ (atha) - then; पवित्रिणः (pavitriṇaḥ) - pure;]
(Then the tongues of the serpents were split in two by that action. And by the touch of nectar, the sacred grass became pure.)

ततः सुपर्णः परमप्रहृष्टवा; न्विहृत्य मात्रा सह तत्र कानने। भुजङ्गभक्षः परमार्चितः खगै; रहीनकीर्तिर्विनतामनन्दयत् ॥१-३०-२१॥
tataḥ suparṇaḥ paramaprahṛṣṭavā; nvihṛtya mātrā saha tatra kānane। bhujaṅgabhakṣaḥ paramārcitaḥ khagai; rahīnakīrtirvinatāmanandayat ॥1-30-21॥
