(Born indeed are the serpents, O father, powerful and formidable. Having known that curse, then what else indeed did they do?)

(You indeed torment the creatures with intense penance, O sinless one. Tell me the desire remaining in your heart for a long time.)

सोदर्या मम सर्वे हि भ्रातरो मन्दचेतसः। सह तैर्नोत्सहे वस्तुं तद्भवाननुमन्यताम् ॥१-३२-८॥
sodaryā mama sarve hi bhrātaro mandacētasaḥ। saha tairnōtsahē vastuṁ tadbhavānnumanyatām ॥1-32-8॥
[सोदर्या (sodaryā) - brothers; मम (mama) - my; सर्वे (sarve) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; मन्दचेतसः (mandacētasaḥ) - dull-minded; सह (saha) - with; तैः (taiḥ) - them; न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsahē) - capable; वस्तुम् (vastum) - to live; तत् (tad) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you; अनुमन्यताम् (anumanyatām) - may permit;]
(Brothers my all indeed brothers dull-minded with them not capable to live that you may permit.)
All my brothers are indeed dull-minded. I am not capable of living with them, so may you permit me to leave.
अभ्यसूयन्ति सततं परस्परममित्रवत्। ततोऽहं तप आतिष्ठे नैतान्पश्येयमित्युत ॥१-३२-९॥
abhyasūyanti satataṃ parasparam amitravat। tato'haṃ tapa ātiṣṭhe naitān paśyeyam ityuta ॥1-32-9॥

जानामि शेष सर्वेषां भ्रातृणां ते विचेष्टितम्। मातुश्चाप्यपराधाद्वै भ्रातृणां ते महद्भयम् ॥१-३२-१३॥
jānāmi śeṣa sarveṣāṃ bhrātṛṇāṃ te viceṣṭitam। mātuścāpyaparādhādvai bhrātṛṇāṃ te mahadbhayam ॥1-32-13॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; शेष (śeṣa) - remaining; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; भ्रातृणां (bhrātṛṇāṃ) - of brothers; ते (te) - your; विचेष्टितम् (viceṣṭitam) - actions; मातुश्च (mātuśca) - and of mother; अप्यपराधात् (apyaparādhāt) - also due to offense; वै (vai) - indeed; भ्रातृणां (bhrātṛṇāṃ) - of brothers; ते (te) - your; महत् (mahat) - great; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(I know the remaining actions of all your brothers. And indeed, due to the offense of the mother, there is great fear for your brothers.)

कृतोऽत्र परिहारश्च पूर्वमेव भुजङ्गम। भ्रातृणां तव सर्वेषां न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१-३२-१४॥

(Choose a boon from me, whatever else you desire. I will indeed give you a boon today, my greatest affection is in you.)

दिष्ट्या च बुद्धिर्धर्मे ते निविष्टा पन्नगोत्तम। अतो भूयश्च ते बुद्धिर्धर्मे भवतु सुस्थिरा ॥१-३२-१६॥
diṣṭyā ca buddhirdharme te niviṣṭā pannagottama। ato bhūyaśca te buddhirdharme bhavatu susthirā ॥1-32-16॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - fortunately; च (ca) - and; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intelligence; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; ते (te) - your; निविष्टा (niviṣṭā) - established; पन्नगोत्तम (pannagottama) - O best of serpents; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intelligence; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; भवतु (bhavatu) - may be; सुस्थिरा (susthirā) - very firm;]
(Fortunately, your intelligence is established in righteousness, O best of serpents. Therefore, may your intelligence be further very firm in righteousness.)

(This indeed is the boon I desire today, O great-grandfather. May my intellect delight in righteousness, peace, and austerity, O Lord.)

प्रीतोऽस्म्यनेन ते शेष दमेन प्रशमेन च। त्वया त्विदं वचः कार्यं मन्नियोगात्प्रजाहितम् ॥१-३२-१८॥
prīto'smyanena te śeṣa damena praśamena ca। tvayā tvidaṃ vacaḥ kāryaṃ manniyogātprajāhitam ॥1-32-18॥
[प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - am; अनेन (anena) - by this; ते (te) - your; शेष (śeṣa) - remaining; दमेन (damena) - by restraint; प्रशमेन (praśamena) - by tranquility; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तू (tu) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - to be done; मन्नियोगात् (manni yogāt) - by my command; प्रजाहितम् (prajāhitam) - for the welfare of the people;]
(I am pleased by this, your remaining restraint and tranquility. Indeed, this word is to be done by you by my command for the welfare of the people.)

इमां महीं शैलवनोपपन्नां; ससागरां साकरपत्तनां च। त्वं शेष सम्यक्चलितां यथाव; त्सङ्गृह्य तिष्ठस्व यथाचला स्यात् ॥१-३२-१९॥
imāṃ mahīṃ śailavanopapannāṃ; sasāgarāṃ sākarapattanāṃ ca। tvaṃ śeṣa samyakcalitāṃ yathāva; tsaṅgṛhya tiṣṭhasva yathācalā syāt ॥1-32-19॥
[इमां (imām) - this; महीं (mahīm) - earth; शैलवनोपपन्नां (śailavanopapannām) - endowed with mountains and forests; ससागरां (sasāgarām) - with oceans; साकरपत्तनां (sākarapattanām) - with ports; च (ca) - and; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शेष (śeṣa) - Shesha; सम्यक्चलितां (samyakcalitām) - properly moved; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; सङ्गृह्य (saṅgṛhya) - holding; तिष्ठस्व (tiṣṭhasva) - stay; यथाचला (yathācalā) - as immovable; स्यात् (syāt) - may be;]
(This earth, endowed with mountains and forests, with oceans and ports, you, Shesha, properly moved as it is, holding, stay as immovable may be.)
O Shesha, hold this earth, which is endowed with mountains, forests, oceans, and ports, and stay steady so that it remains immovable.

यथाह देवो वरदः प्रजापति; र्महीपतिर्भूतपतिर्जगत्पतिः। तथा महीं धारयितास्मि निश्चलां; प्रयच्छ तां मे शिरसि प्रजापते ॥१-३२-२०॥
yathāha devo varadaḥ prajāpati; rmīpatirbhūtapatirjagatpatiḥ| tathā mahīṃ dhārayitāsmi niścalāṃ; prayaccha tāṃ me śirasi prajāpate ॥1-32-20॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; आह (āha) - said; देवः (devaḥ) - god; वरदः (varadaḥ) - boon-giver; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - lord of creatures; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - lord of the earth; भूतपतिः (bhūtapatiḥ) - lord of beings; जगत्पतिः (jagatpatiḥ) - lord of the world; तथा (tathā) - thus; महीं (mahīṃ) - earth; धारयिता (dhārayitā) - supporter; अस्मि (asmi) - am; निश्चलां (niścalāṃ) - steady; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - grant; तां (tāṃ) - that; मे (me) - to me; शिरसि (śirasi) - on the head; प्रजापते (prajāpate) - O lord of creatures;]
(As the god, the boon-giver, the lord of creatures, the lord of the earth, the lord of beings, the lord of the world said, thus I am the steady supporter of the earth; grant that to me on the head, O lord of creatures.)
As the god, the boon-giver, and the lord of all realms declared, I am the steadfast supporter of the earth; therefore, grant me that responsibility upon my head, O lord of creatures.

अधो महीं गच्छ भुजङ्गमोत्तम; स्वयं तवैषा विवरं प्रदास्यति। इमां धरां धारयता त्वया हि मे; महत्प्रियं शेष कृतं भविष्यति ॥१-३२-२१॥
adho mahīṁ gaccha bhujaṅgamottama; svayaṁ tavaiṣā vivaraṁ pradāsyati. imāṁ dharāṁ dhārayatā tvayā hi me; mahatpriyaṁ śeṣa kṛtaṁ bhaviṣyati ॥1-32-21॥
[अधः (adhaḥ) - below; महीं (mahīṁ) - earth; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; भुजङ्गमोत्तम (bhujaṅgamottama) - O best of serpents; स्वयम् (svayam) - by itself; तव (tava) - your; एषा (eṣā) - this; विवरम् (vivaram) - hole; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will provide; इमाम् (imām) - this; धराम् (dharām) - earth; धारयता (dhārayatā) - by holding; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; महत् (mahat) - great; प्रियं (priyaṁ) - favor; शेष (śeṣa) - Śeṣa; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Go below the earth, O best of serpents; by itself, this hole will provide for you. By holding this earth, indeed, my great favor will be done by you, O Śeṣa.)
Descend to the earth, O noble serpent; this hole will naturally accommodate you. By supporting the earth, you will indeed fulfill my great favor, O Śeṣa.

[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; विवरं (vivaraṃ) - a hole; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; भुवः (bhuvaḥ) - of the earth; भुजगवराग्रजः (bhujagavarāgrajaḥ) - the elder brother of the best of serpents; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood; बिभर्ति (bibharti) - bears; देवीं (devīṃ) - the goddess; शिरसा (śirasā) - on his head; महीमिमां (mahīmimāṃ) - this earth; समुद्रनेमिं (samudranemiṃ) - with the ocean as its rim; परिगृह्य (parigṛhya) - having embraced; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides;]
(Thus, having made a hole and entered, he, the lord, the elder brother of the best of serpents, stood. He bears the goddess on his head, this earth with the ocean as its rim, having embraced it on all sides.)
Thus, having created an opening and entered, he, the lord and elder brother of the foremost serpents, stood firm. He supports the goddess on his head, embracing the entire earth with its oceanic boundary from all sides.

शेषोऽसि नागोत्तम धर्मदेवो; महीमिमां धारयसे यदेकः। अनन्तभोगः परिगृह्य सर्वां; यथाहमेवं बलभिद्यथा वा ॥१-३२-२३॥

(You are Shesha, the best of serpents, the god of dharma; you hold this earth alone with endless coils, encompassing all; as I do, or as Indra does.)
