(Having heard the words of all of them, and thus, and the words of Vāsuki, Elāpatra said this.)
Elāpatra, having listened to the words of everyone and also to Vāsuki's words, spoke as follows.
न स यज्ञो न भविता न स राजा तथाविधः। जनमेजयः पाण्डवेयो यतोऽस्माकं महाभयम् ॥१-३४-२॥
na sa yajño na bhavitā na sa rājā tathāvidhaḥ। janamejayaḥ pāṇḍaveyo yato'smākaṃ mahābhayam ॥1-34-2॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; न (na) - not; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; तथाविधः (tathāvidhaḥ) - such; जनमेजयः (janamejayaḥ) - Janamejaya; पाण्डवेयः (pāṇḍaveyaḥ) - descendant of Pandu; यतः (yataḥ) - from whom; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - our; महाभयम् (mahābhayam) - great fear;]
(He is not the sacrifice, nor will he be, nor is he such a king. Janamejaya, the descendant of Pandu, from whom our great fear arises.)
He is neither the sacrifice nor the king as such. It is Janamejaya, the descendant of Pandu, from whom our great fear arises.
दैवेनोपहतो राजन्यो भवेदिह पूरुषः। स दैवमेवाश्रयते नान्यत्तत्र परायणम् ॥१-३४-३॥
daivenopahato rājanyo bhaved iha puruṣaḥ। sa daivam evāśrayate nānyat tatra parāyaṇam ॥1-34-3॥
[दैवेन (daivena) - by fate; उपहतः (upahataḥ) - afflicted; राजन्यः (rājanyaḥ) - a Kshatriya; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; इह (iha) - here; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; सः (saḥ) - he; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; एव (eva) - only; आश्रयते (āśrayate) - takes refuge; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - anything else; तत्र (tatra) - there; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - shelter;]
(Afflicted by fate, a Kshatriya becomes a man here. He takes refuge only in fate, not anything else there as shelter.)
When afflicted by fate, a Kshatriya here becomes just a man. He relies solely on fate, finding no other refuge or shelter there.
तदिदं दैवमस्माकं भयं पन्नगसत्तमाः। दैवमेवाश्रयामोऽत्र शृणुध्वं च वचो मम ॥१-३४-४॥
tadidaṁ daivamasmākaṁ bhayaṁ pannagasattamāḥ। daivamevāśrayāmo'tra śṛṇudhvaṁ ca vaco mama ॥1-34-4॥

अहं शापे समुत्सृष्टे समश्रौषं वचस्तदा। मातुरुत्सङ्गमारूढो भयात्पन्नगसत्तमाः ॥१-३४-५॥
ahaṁ śāpe samutsṛṣṭe samaśrauṣaṁ vacastadā। māturutsaṅgamārūḍho bhayātpannagasattamāḥ ॥1-34-5॥

devānāṃ pannagaśreṣṭhāstīkṣṇāstīkṣṇā iti prabho। pitāmahamupāgamya duḥkhārtānāṃ mahādyute ॥1-34-6॥

का हि लब्ध्वा प्रियान्पुत्राञ्शपेदेवं पितामह। ऋते कद्रूं तीक्ष्णरूपां देवदेव तवाग्रतः ॥१-३४-७॥
kā hi labdhvā priyānputrāñśapedevaṃ pitāmahaḥ। ṛte kadrūṃ tīkṣṇarūpāṃ devadeva tavāgrataḥ ॥1-34-7॥

(Who indeed, having obtained beloved sons, would curse thus, O grandfather, except Kadrū of fierce form, O lord of lords, before you?)

तथेति च वचस्तस्यास्त्वयाप्युक्तं पितामह। एतदिच्छाम विज्ञातुं कारणं यन्न वारिता ॥१-३४-८॥
tatheti ca vacastasyāstvayāpyuktaṃ pitāmahaḥ। etadicchāma vijñātuṃ kāraṇaṃ yanna vāritā ॥1-34-8॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; च (ca) - and; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अपि (api) - also; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; पितामह (pitāmaha) - grandfather; एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छाम (icchāma) - we wish; विज्ञातुं (vijñātuṃ) - to know; कारणं (kāraṇaṃ) - reason; यत् (yat) - that; न (na) - not; वारिता (vāritā) - prevented;]
(Thus, the speech of her was also spoken by you, grandfather. We wish to know the reason why it was not prevented.)

बहवः पन्नगास्तीक्ष्णा भीमवीर्या विषोल्बणाः। प्रजानां हितकामोऽहं न निवारितवांस्तदा ॥१-३४-९॥
bahavaḥ pannagāstīkṣṇā bhīmavīryā viṣolbaṇāḥ। prajānāṃ hitakāmo'haṃ na nivāritavāṃstadā ॥1-34-9॥
[बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - serpents; तीक्ष्णाः (tīkṣṇāḥ) - fierce; भीमवीर्याः (bhīmavīryā) - of terrible strength; विषोल्बणाः (viṣolbaṇāḥ) - full of poison; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the people; हितकामः (hitakāmaḥ) - desiring welfare; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; निवारितवान् (nivāritavān) - restrained; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Many fierce serpents of terrible strength, full of poison; desiring the welfare of the people, I did not restrain them then.)
There were many fierce serpents with terrible strength and full of poison. For the welfare of the people, I did not restrain them at that time.
ये दन्दशूकाः क्षुद्राश्च पापचारा विषोल्बणाः। तेषां विनाशो भविता न तु ये धर्मचारिणः ॥१-३४-१०॥
ye dandaśūkāḥ kṣudrāśca pāpacārā viṣolbaṇāḥ। teṣāṃ vināśo bhavitā na tu ye dharmacāriṇaḥ ॥1-34-10॥
[ये (ye) - those who; दन्दशूकाः (dandaśūkāḥ) - serpents; क्षुद्राः (kṣudrāḥ) - mean; च (ca) - and; पापचारा (pāpacārā) - evil-doers; विषोल्बणाः (viṣolbaṇāḥ) - venomous; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; ये (ye) - those who; धर्मचारिणः (dharmacāriṇaḥ) - righteous;]
(Those who are serpents, mean, evil-doers, and venomous, their destruction will be, but not those who are righteous.)
The destruction will come to those who are like serpents, mean, evil-doers, and venomous, but not to those who follow righteousness.
यन्निमित्तं च भविता मोक्षस्तेषां महाभयात्। पन्नगानां निबोधध्वं तस्मिन्काले तथागते ॥१-३४-११॥
yannimittaṃ ca bhavitā mokṣasteṣāṃ mahābhayāt| pannagānāṃ nibodhadhvaṃ tasminkāle tathāgate ॥1-34-11॥
[यत् (yat) - which; निमित्तं (nimittaṃ) - cause; च (ca) - and; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; मोक्षः (mokṣaḥ) - liberation; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; महाभयात् (mahābhayāt) - from great fear; पन्नगानां (pannagānāṃ) - of the serpents; निबोधध्वं (nibodhadhvaṃ) - understand; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - at that; काले (kāle) - time; तथागते (tathāgate) - when the Tathagata (Buddha) has come;]
(Understand the cause which will be liberation from great fear for them, the serpents, at that time when the Tathagata has come.)
Understand the reason that will bring liberation from great fear to the serpents at the time when the Tathagata (Buddha) arrives.
यायावरकुले धीमान्भविष्यति महानृषिः। जरत्कारुरिति ख्यातस्तेजस्वी नियतेन्द्रियः ॥१-३४-१२॥
yāyāvarakule dhīmānbhaviṣyati mahānṛṣiḥ। jaratkāruriti khyātastejasvī niyatendriyaḥ ॥1-34-12॥
[यायावरकुले (yāyāvarakule) - in the family of wanderers; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; महान् (mahān) - great; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; इति (iti) - thus; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - known; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; नियत-इन्द्रियः (niyata-indriyaḥ) - self-controlled;]
(In the family of wanderers, a wise and great sage will be born, known as Jaratkaru, brilliant and self-controlled.)

तस्य पुत्रो जरत्कारोरुत्पत्स्यति महातपाः। आस्तीको नाम यज्ञं स प्रतिषेत्स्यति तं तदा ॥ तत्र मोक्ष्यन्ति भुजगा ये भविष्यन्ति धार्मिकाः ॥१-३४-१३॥
tasya putro jaratkārorutpatsyati mahātapāḥ। āstīko nāma yajñaṃ sa pratiṣetsyati taṃ tadā ॥ tatra mokṣyanti bhujagā ye bhaviṣyanti dhārmikāḥ ॥1-34-13॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; जरत्कारोः (jaratkāroḥ) - of Jaratkāru; उत्पत्स्यति (utpatsyati) - will be born; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; आस्तीको (āstīko) - Āstīka; नाम (nāma) - by name; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रतिषेत्स्यति (pratiṣetsyati) - will stop; तम् (tam) - that; तदा (tadā) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; मोक्ष्यन्ति (mokṣyanti) - will be freed; भुजगाः (bhujagāḥ) - serpents; ये (ye) - who; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; धार्मिकाः (dhārmikāḥ) - righteous;]
(His son, a great ascetic named Āstīka, will be born to Jaratkāru. He will stop that sacrifice then. There, the serpents who will be righteous will be freed.)

(He, the best of sages, O divine one, Jaratkaru, the great ascetic, in whom will beget a son, a great soul, powerful.)
The great sage Jaratkaru, known for his intense penance, will beget a powerful and noble son. In whom will this occur, O divine one?

सनामायां सनामा स कन्यायां द्विजसत्तमः। अपत्यं वीर्यवान्देवा वीर्यवज्जनयिष्यति ॥१-३४-१५॥
sanāmāyāṃ sanāmā sa kanyāyāṃ dvijasattamaḥ। apatyaṃ vīryavāndevā vīryavajjaniṣyati ॥1-34-15॥
[सनामायां (sanāmāyāṃ) - in the named one; सनामा (sanāmā) - named; स (sa) - he; कन्यायां (kanyāyāṃ) - in the maiden; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - O best of the twice-born; अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; देवा (devā) - O god; वीर्यवत् (vīryavat) - powerful; जनयिष्यति (janiṣyati) - will beget;]
(In the named one, named he, in the maiden, O best of the twice-born, powerful offspring, O god, powerful will beget.)
O best of the twice-born, in the maiden named Sanama, a powerful offspring will be begotten by the powerful god.
एलापत्र उवाच॥
elāpatra uvāca॥
[एलापत्र (elāpatra) - Elapatra; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Elapatra said:)

एवमस्त्विति तं देवाः पितामहमथाब्रुवन्। उक्त्वा चैवं गता देवाः स च देवः पितामहः ॥१-३४-१६॥
evam astv iti taṃ devāḥ pitāmaham athābruvan। uktvā caivaṃ gatā devāḥ sa ca devaḥ pitāmahaḥ ॥1-34-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - him; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - grandfather; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; च (ca) - and; एवम् (evam) - thus; गता (gatā) - went; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; देवः (devaḥ) - god; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather;]
(Thus let it be, said the gods to the grandfather. Having spoken thus, the gods went, and he, the god, the grandfather.)
The gods said to the grandfather, "So be it." After saying this, the gods departed, and the god, the grandfather, remained.
सोऽहमेवं प्रपश्यामि वासुके भगिनीं तव। जरत्कारुरिति ख्यातां तां तस्मै प्रतिपादय ॥१-३४-१७॥
so'ham evaṃ prapaśyāmi vāsuke bhaginīṃ tava। jaratkārur iti khyātāṃ tāṃ tasmai pratipādaya ॥1-34-17॥

भैक्षवद्भिक्षमाणाय नागानां भयशान्तये। ऋषये सुव्रताय त्वमेष मोक्षः श्रुतो मया ॥१-३४-१८॥
bhaikṣavadbhikṣamāṇāya nāgānāṃ bhayaśāntaye। ṛṣaye suvratāya tvameṣa mokṣaḥ śruto mayā ॥1-34-18॥
[भैक्षवत् (bhaikṣavat) - like a beggar; भिक्षमाणाय (bhikṣamāṇāya) - to the one begging; नागानाम् (nāgānām) - of the serpents; भयशान्तये (bhayaśāntaye) - for the pacification of fear; ऋषये (ṛṣaye) - to the sage; सुव्रताय (suvratāya) - to the one of good vows; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मोक्षः (mokṣaḥ) - liberation; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Like a beggar to the one begging, for the pacification of the serpents' fear, to the sage of good vows, you, this liberation was heard by me.)
