एलापत्रस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा नागा द्विजोत्तम। सर्वे प्रहृष्टमनसः साधु साध्वित्यपूजयन् ॥१-३५-१॥
elāpatrasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā nāgā dvijottama। sarve prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sādhu sādhvityapūjayan ॥1-35-1॥
[एलापत्रस्य (elāpatrasya) - of Elapatra; तु (tu) - but; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नागाः (nāgāḥ) - serpents; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of the twice-born; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रहृष्टमनसः (prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - with delighted minds; साधु (sādhu) - well done; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - they worshipped;]
(Having heard the words of Elapatra, O best of the twice-born, all the serpents with delighted minds worshipped saying 'Well done, well done'.)
Upon hearing the words of Elapatra, all the serpents, delighted in mind, praised saying 'Well done, well done', O best of the twice-born.
ततः प्रभृति तां कन्यां वासुकिः पर्यरक्षत। जरत्कारुं स्वसारं वै परं हर्षमवाप च ॥१-३५-२॥
tataḥ prabhṛti tāṃ kanyāṃ vāsukiḥ paryarakṣata. jaratkāruṃ svasāraṃ vai paraṃ harṣamavāpa ca ॥1-35-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from that time; तां (tāṃ) - that; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - girl; वासुकिः (vāsukiḥ) - Vasuki; पर्यरक्षत (paryarakṣata) - protected; जरत्कारुं (jaratkāruṃ) - Jaratkaru; स्वसारं (svasāraṃ) - sister; वै (vai) - indeed; परं (paraṃ) - great; हर्षमवाप (harṣamavāpa) - joy attained; च (ca) - and;]
(Then from that time, Vasuki protected that girl. Indeed, he attained great joy with his sister Jaratkaru.)
From that time onwards, Vasuki took care of the girl, Jaratkaru, his sister, and was filled with immense joy.
ततो नातिमहान्कालः समतीत इवाभवत्। अथ देवासुराः सर्वे ममन्थुर्वरुणालयम् ॥१-३५-३॥
tato nātimahānkālaḥ samatīta ivābhavat. atha devāsurāḥ sarve mamanthurvaruṇālayam ॥1-35-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; न (na) - not; अतिमहान् (atimahān) - very great; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; समतीतः (samatītaḥ) - passed; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; अथ (atha) - then; देवासुराः (devāsurāḥ) - gods and demons; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ममन्थुः (mamanthuḥ) - churned; वरुणालयम् (varuṇālayam) - the abode of Varuna;]
(Then not a very great time had passed as if it became. Then all the gods and demons churned the abode of Varuna.)
Then, it seemed as if not much time had passed. After that, all the gods and demons churned the ocean, the abode of Varuna.
तत्र नेत्रमभून्नागो वासुकिर्बलिनां वरः। समाप्यैव च तत्कर्म पितामहमुपागमन् ॥१-३५-४॥
tatra netram abhūn nāgo vāsukir balināṃ varaḥ। samāpyai 'va ca tat karma pitāmaham upāgaman ॥1-35-4॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; नेत्रम् (netram) - eye; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; नागः (nāgaḥ) - serpent; वासुकिः (vāsukiḥ) - Vāsuki; बलिनाम् (balinām) - of the strong; वरः (varaḥ) - best; समाप्य (samāpya) - having completed; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - task; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - grandfather; उपागमन् (upāgaman) - approached;]
(There, the serpent Vāsuki, the best of the strong, became an eye. Having completed that task, they approached the grandfather.)
In that place, Vāsuki, the serpent and the best among the strong, became an eye. After completing the task, they went to the grandfather.
देवा वासुकिना सार्धं पितामहमथाब्रुवन्। भगवञ्शापभीतोऽयं वासुकिस्तप्यते भृशम् ॥१-३५-५॥
devā vāsukinā sārdhaṃ pitāmahamathābruvan। bhagavañśāpabhīto'yaṃ vāsukistapyate bhṛśam ॥1-35-5॥
[देवा (devā) - gods; वासुकिना (vāsukinā) - with Vāsuki; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - grandfather; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; शापभीतः (śāpabhītaḥ) - fearful of the curse; अयम् (ayam) - this; वासुकिः (vāsukiḥ) - Vāsuki; तप्यते (tapyate) - is suffering; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(The gods, together with Vāsuki, then said to the grandfather: "O Lord, this Vāsuki, fearful of the curse, is suffering greatly.")
The gods, along with Vāsuki, approached the grandfather and said, "O Lord, Vāsuki is greatly troubled by the curse."
तस्येदं मानसं शल्यं समुद्धर्तुं त्वमर्हसि। जनन्याः शापजं देव ज्ञातीनां हितकाङ्क्षिणः ॥१-३५-६॥
tasyedaṁ mānasaṁ śalyaṁ samuddhartuṁ tvamarhasi| jananyāḥ śāpajaṁ deva jñātīnāṁ hitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ॥1-35-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; इदं (idaṁ) - this; मानसं (mānasaṁ) - mental; शल्यम् (śalyam) - thorn; समुद्धर्तुम् (samuddhartum) - to remove; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हसि (arhasi) - should; जनन्याः (jananyāḥ) - of the mother; शापजम् (śāpajam) - born of curse; देव (deva) - O god; ज्ञातीनाम् (jñātīnām) - of relatives; हितकाङ्क्षिणः (hitakāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - wishing well;]
(You should remove this mental thorn of his, born of the mother's curse, O god, wishing well for the relatives.)
O divine one, you should remove this mental anguish of his, which is born from the mother's curse, as you wish for the well-being of the relatives.
हितो ह्ययं सदास्माकं प्रियकारी च नागराट्। कुरु प्रसादं देवेश शमयास्य मनोज्वरम् ॥१-३५-७॥
hito hyayaṃ sadāsmākaṃ priyakārī ca nāgarāṭ. kuru prasādaṃ deveśa śamayāsya manojvaram ॥1-35-7॥
[हितः (hitaḥ) - beneficial; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; सदा (sadā) - always; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; प्रियकारी (priyakārī) - pleasing; च (ca) - and; नागराट् (nāgarāṭ) - king of the city; कुरु (kuru) - do; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; देवेश (deveśa) - O lord of the gods; शमय (śamaya) - pacify; अस्य (asya) - his; मनोज्वरम् (manojvaram) - mental fever;]
(Beneficial indeed this always our pleasing and king of the city. Do favor, O lord of the gods, pacify his mental fever.)
This king of the city is indeed always beneficial and pleasing to us. O lord of the gods, please grant your favor and pacify his mental distress.

(Brahma said:)
Brahma spoke:
मयैवैतद्वितीर्णं वै वचनं मनसामराः। एलापत्रेण नागेन यदस्याभिहितं पुरा ॥१-३५-८॥
mayaivaitadvitīrṇaṃ vai vacanaṃ manasāmarāḥ| elāpatreṇa nāgena yadasyābhihitaṃ purā ॥1-35-8॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; एव (eva) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; वितीर्णं (vitīrṇaṃ) - distributed; वै (vai) - indeed; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - word; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; अमराः (amarāḥ) - immortals; एलापत्रेण (elāpatreṇa) - by Elapatra; नागेन (nāgena) - by the serpent; यत् (yat) - which; अस्य (asya) - of him; अभिहितं (abhihitaṃ) - spoken; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(By me indeed this word was distributed by mind to the immortals; by Elapatra the serpent which was spoken of him formerly.)
This message was indeed conveyed by me through the mind to the immortals; it was previously spoken by the serpent Elapatra.
तत्करोत्वेष नागेन्द्रः प्राप्तकालं वचस्तथा। विनशिष्यन्ति ये पापा न तु ये धर्मचारिणः ॥१-३५-९॥
tatkarotveṣa nāgendraḥ prāptakālaṃ vacastathā। vinaśiṣyanti ye pāpā na tu ye dharmacāriṇaḥ ॥1-35-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; करोतु (karotu) - may do; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; प्राप्तकालं (prāptakālaṃ) - timely; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तथा (tathā) - thus; विनशिष्यन्ति (vinaśiṣyanti) - will perish; ये (ye) - who; पापाः (pāpāḥ) - sinners; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; ये (ye) - who; धर्मचारिणः (dharmacāriṇaḥ) - righteous;]
(Let this king of serpents speak timely words. Those who are sinners will perish, but not those who are righteous.)
Let the king of serpents speak at the right time. The sinners will perish, but the righteous will not.
उत्पन्नः स जरत्कारुस्तपस्युग्रे रतो द्विजः। तस्यैष भगिनीं काले जरत्कारुं प्रयच्छतु ॥१-३५-१०॥
utpannaḥ sa jaratkārustapasyugre rato dvijaḥ। tasyaaiṣa bhaginīṃ kāle jaratkāruṃ prayacchatu ॥1-35-10॥
[उत्पन्नः (utpannaḥ) - born; स (sa) - he; जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; तपस्याम् (tapasyām) - in penance; उग्रे (ugre) - severe; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - brahmin; तस्य (tasya) - his; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; भगिनीम् (bhaginīm) - sister; काले (kāle) - in time; जरत्कारुम् (jaratkārum) - to Jaratkaru; प्रयच्छतु (prayacchatu) - should give;]
(Born was he, Jaratkaru, engaged in severe penance, a brahmin. His sister, in time, should be given to Jaratkaru.)
Jaratkaru, a brahmin, was born and engaged in severe penance. In due time, his sister should be given to him.
यदेलापत्रेण वचस्तदोक्तं भुजगेन ह। पन्नगानां हितं देवास्तत्तथा न तदन्यथा ॥१-३५-११॥
yadelāpatreṇa vacastadoktaṃ bhujagena ha। pannagānāṃ hitaṃ devāstattathā na tadanyathā ॥1-35-11॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; इलापत्रेण (ilāpatreṇa) - by Ilapatra; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तदा (tadā) - then; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - said; भुजगेन (bhujagena) - by the serpent; ह (ha) - indeed; पन्नगानां (pannagānāṃ) - of the serpents; हितं (hitaṃ) - welfare; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; तत्तथा (tattathā) - that thus; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(When the speech was said by Ilapatra, then indeed by the serpent, the welfare of the serpents was thus by the gods, not otherwise that.)
When Ilapatra spoke, the serpent indeed conveyed the welfare of the serpents to the gods, and it was not otherwise.

एतच्छ्रुत्वा स नागेन्द्रः पितामहवचस्तदा। सर्पान्बहूञ्जरत्कारौ नित्ययुक्तान्समादधत् ॥१-३५-१२॥
etacchrutvā sa nāgendraḥ pitāmahavacastadā। sarpānbahūñjaratkārau nityayuktānsamādadhat ॥1-35-12॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सः (saḥ) - he; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; पितामह (pitāmaha) - grandfather; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्पान् (sarpān) - serpents; बहून् (bahūn) - many; जरत्कारौ (jaratkārau) - Jaratkaru; नित्ययुक्तान् (nityayuktān) - always engaged; समादधत् (samādadhat) - placed;]
(Having heard this, the king of serpents then placed many serpents, always engaged, with Jaratkaru, the grandfather's words.)
Upon hearing this, the king of serpents, in accordance with the grandfather's words, assigned many serpents, who were always engaged, to Jaratkaru.
जरत्कारुर्यदा भार्यामिच्छेद्वरयितुं प्रभुः। शीघ्रमेत्य ममाख्येयं तन्नः श्रेयो भविष्यति ॥१-३५-१३॥
jaratkāruryadā bhāryāmicchedvarayituṃ prabhuḥ| śīghrametya mamākhyeyaṃ tannaḥ śreyo bhaviṣyati ॥1-35-13॥
[जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; यदा (yadā) - when; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; इच्छेत् (icchet) - desires; वरयितुम् (varayitum) - to marry; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; एत्य (etya) - having come; मम (mama) - my; आख्येयम् (ākhyeyam) - to be told; तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - our; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - welfare; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(When Jaratkaru desires to marry a wife, the master, having come quickly, my story should be told; that will be our welfare.)
When Jaratkaru desires to marry, the master should quickly come and tell my story; that will ensure our welfare.
