taṃ tathā mantriṇo dṛṣṭvā bhogena pariveṣṭitam। vivarṇavadanāḥ sarve rurudurbhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ ॥1-40-1॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - ministers; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भोगेन (bhogena) - with enjoyment; परिवेष्टितम् (pariveṣṭitam) - surrounded; विवर्णवदनाः (vivarṇavadanāḥ) - pale-faced; सर्वे (sarve) - all; रुरुदुः (ruruduḥ) - cried; भृशदुःखिताः (bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ) - greatly distressed;]
(Him thus the ministers having seen surrounded with enjoyment, all pale-faced cried greatly distressed.)
Seeing him thus surrounded by enjoyment, all the ministers, pale-faced, cried out in great distress.
तं तु नादं ततः श्रुत्वा मन्त्रिणस्ते प्रदुद्रुवुः। अपश्यंश्चैव ते यान्तमाकाशे नागमद्भुतम् ॥१-४०-२॥
taṁ tu nādaṁ tataḥ śrutvā mantriṇaste pradudruvuḥ। apaśyaṁścaiva te yāntamākāśe nāgamadbhutam ॥1-40-2॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; तु (tu) - but; नादं (nādaṁ) - sound; ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - ministers; ते (te) - they; प्रदुद्रुवुः (pradudruvuḥ) - ran away; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - saw; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ते (te) - they; यान्तम् (yāntam) - going; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; नागम् (nāgam) - serpent; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful;]
(But having heard that sound, the ministers then ran away. And indeed, they saw a wonderful serpent going in the sky.)
Upon hearing that sound, the ministers fled in fear. They saw a magnificent serpent moving through the sky.
सीमन्तमिव कुर्वाणं नभसः पद्मवर्चसम्। तक्षकं पन्नगश्रेष्ठं भृशं शोकपरायणाः ॥१-४०-३॥
sīmantamiva kurvāṇaṃ nabhasaḥ padmavarcasam। takṣakaṃ pannagaśreṣṭhaṃ bhṛśaṃ śokaparāyaṇāḥ ॥1-40-3॥
[सीमन्तमिव (sīmantamiva) - like a parting; कुर्वाणं (kurvāṇam) - making; नभसः (nabhasaḥ) - of the sky; पद्मवर्चसम् (padmavarcasam) - lotus-like radiance; तक्षकं (takṣakam) - Takshaka; पन्नगश्रेष्ठं (pannagaśreṣṭham) - best of serpents; भृशं (bhṛśam) - intensely; शोकपरायणाः (śokaparāyaṇāḥ) - immersed in sorrow;]
(Making the sky like a parting with lotus-like radiance, Takshaka, the best of serpents, intensely immersed in sorrow.)
Takshaka, the foremost of serpents, was creating a parting in the sky with his lotus-like radiance, deeply absorbed in sorrow.
ततस्तु ते तद्गृहमग्निना वृतं; प्रदीप्यमानं विषजेन भोगिनः। भयात्परित्यज्य दिशः प्रपेदिरे; पपात तच्चाशनिताडितं यथा ॥१-४०-४॥
tatastu te tadgṛhamagninā vṛtaṃ; pradīpyamānaṃ viṣajena bhoginaḥ| bhayātparityajya diśaḥ prapedire; papāta taccāśanitāḍitaṃ yathā ॥1-40-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; तत् (tat) - that; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; वृतम् (vṛtam) - surrounded; प्रदीप्यमानम् (pradīpyamānam) - burning; विषजेन (viṣajena) - by poison; भोगिनः (bhoginaḥ) - of the serpent; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - abandoning; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; प्रपेदिरे (prapedire) - fled; पपात (papāta) - fell; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अशनिताडितम् (aśanitāḍitam) - struck by lightning; यथा (yathā) - as; ॥१-४०-४॥ (॥1-40-4॥) - (verse number);]
(Then, but they, that house surrounded by fire; burning by poison of the serpent. Out of fear, abandoning directions, fled; fell that and struck by lightning as.)

ततो नृपे तक्षकतेजसा हते; प्रयुज्य सर्वाः परलोकसत्क्रियाः। शुचिर्द्विजो राजपुरोहितस्तदा; तथैव ते तस्य नृपस्य मन्त्रिणः ॥१-४०-५॥
tato nṛpe takṣakatejasā hate; prayujya sarvāḥ paralokasatkriyāḥ. śucirdvijo rājapurohitastadā; tathaiva te tasya nṛpasya mantriṇaḥ ॥1-40-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नृपे (nṛpe) - king; तक्षकतेजसा (takṣakatejasā) - by Takshaka's power; हते (hate) - killed; प्रयुज्य (prayujya) - performing; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; परलोकसत्क्रियाः (paralokasatkriyāḥ) - funeral rites; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - brahmin; राजपुरोहितः (rājapurohitaḥ) - royal priest; तदा (tadā) - then; तथैव (tathaiva) - similarly; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - his; नृपस्य (nṛpasya) - of the king; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - ministers;]
(Then, when the king was killed by Takshaka's power, all the funeral rites were performed. The pure brahmin, the royal priest, then, similarly, they, his, of the king, ministers.)

[नृपं (nṛpam) - king; शिशुं (śiśum) - child; तस्य (tasya) - his; सुतं (sutam) - son; प्रचक्रिरे (pracakrire) - they proclaimed; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पुरवासिनः (puravāsinaḥ) - city dwellers; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; नृपं (nṛpam) - king; यम् (yam) - whom; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they called; तम् (tam) - him; अमित्रघातिनं (amitraghātinaṃ) - enemy-slayer; कुरुप्रवीरं (kurupravīram) - Kuru hero; जनमेजयं (janamejayaṃ) - Janamejaya; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(The people of the city, having assembled, proclaimed his son, the child, as king; the people called him Janamejaya, the Kuru hero, the enemy-slayer king.)
The city dwellers gathered and declared his son, the child, as the king. They referred to him as Janamejaya, the heroic Kuru king and slayer of enemies.
स बाल एवार्यमतिर्नृपोत्तमः; सहैव तैर्मन्त्रिपुरोहितैस्तदा। शशास राज्यं कुरुपुङ्गवाग्रजो; यथास्य वीरः प्रपितामहस्तथा ॥१-४०-७॥
sa bāla evāryamatirnṛpottamaḥ; sahaiva tairmantripurohitastadā. śaśāsa rājyaṃ kurupuṅgavāgrajo; yathāsya vīraḥ prapitāmahastathā ॥1-40-7॥
[स (sa) - he; बालः (bālaḥ) - young; एव (eva) - indeed; आर्यमतिः (āryamatiḥ) - noble-minded; नृपोत्तमः (nṛpottamaḥ) - best of kings; सह (saha) - with; एव (eva) - indeed; तैः (taiḥ) - those; मन्त्रिपुरोहितैः (mantripurohitaiḥ) - ministers and priests; तदा (tadā) - then; शशास (śaśāsa) - ruled; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; कुरुपुङ्गवाग्रजः (kurupuṅgavāgrajaḥ) - elder of the Kuru heroes; यथा (yathā) - as; अस्य (asya) - his; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; प्रपितामहः (prapitāmahaḥ) - great-grandfather; तथा (tathā) - so; ॥१-४०-७॥ (॥1-40-7॥) - (verse number);]
(He, indeed young and noble-minded, the best of kings, then ruled the kingdom with those ministers and priests, the elder of the Kuru heroes, as his hero great-grandfather did so.)
The young and noble-minded king, the best among rulers, governed the kingdom with his ministers and priests, just as his heroic great-grandfather did.
ततस्तु राजानममित्रतापनं; समीक्ष्य ते तस्य नृपस्य मन्त्रिणः। सुवर्णवर्माणमुपेत्य काशिपं; वपुष्टमार्थं वरयां प्रचक्रमुः ॥१-४०-८॥
tatastu rājānamamitratāpanaṃ; samīkṣya te tasya nṛpasya mantriṇaḥ| suvarṇavarmāṇamupetya kāśipaṃ; vapuṣṭamārthaṃ varayāṃ pracakramuḥ ॥1-40-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; अमित्रतापनम् (amitratāpanam) - enemy-tormentor; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having observed; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - his; नृपस्य (nṛpasya) - of the king; मन्त्रिणः (mantriṇaḥ) - ministers; सुवर्णवर्माणम् (suvarṇavarmāṇam) - Suvarnavarman; उपेत्य (upetya) - having approached; काशिपम् (kāśipam) - Kaship; वपुष्टम् (vapuṣṭam) - excellent form; अर्थम् (artham) - for the purpose; वरयाम् (varayām) - to choose; प्रचक्रमुः (pracakramuḥ) - began;]
(Then, having observed the king, the enemy-tormentor, his ministers approached Suvarnavarman, Kaship, for the purpose of choosing an excellent form, and began.)

ततः स राजा प्रददौ वपुष्टमां; कुरुप्रवीराय परीक्ष्य धर्मतः। स चापि तां प्राप्य मुदा युतोऽभव; न चान्यनारीषु मनो दधे क्वचित् ॥१-४०-९॥
tataḥ sa rājā pradadau vapuṣṭamāṃ; kurupravīrāya parīkṣya dharmataḥ| sa cāpi tāṃ prāpya mudā yuto'bhavat; na cānyanārīṣu mano dadhe kvacit ॥1-40-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; वपुष्टमां (vapuṣṭamāṃ) - most beautiful; कुरुप्रवीराय (kurupravīrāya) - to the hero of the Kurus; परीक्ष्य (parīkṣya) - after examining; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - righteously; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तां (tāṃ) - her; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युतः (yutaḥ) - united; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यनारीषु (anyanārīṣu) - in other women; मनो (mano) - mind; दधे (dadhe) - placed; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(Then the king gave the most beautiful one to the hero of the Kurus, after examining righteously. And he, having obtained her, became united with joy, and did not place his mind in other women anywhere.)

[सरःसु (saraḥsu) - in the lakes; फुल्लेषु (phulleṣu) - in the blooming; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in the forests; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly; प्रसन्नचेता (prasannacetā) - with a clear mind; विजहार (vijahāra) - enjoyed; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful one; तथा (tathā) - thus; स (sa) - he; राजन्यवरः (rājanyavaraḥ) - the best of the royals; विजह्रिवा (vijahrivā) - enjoyed; अन्यथा (anyathā) - like; उर्वशीम् (urvaśīm) - Urvaśī; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पुरूरवाः (purūravāḥ) - Purūravas;]
(In the lakes, in the blooming forests, with a clear mind, the powerful one enjoyed. Thus, he, the best of the royals, enjoyed like Purūravas having obtained Urvaśī formerly.)

(Then, the beautiful-bodied lady, having obtained the excellent husband, the king of pleasing form, Rama indeed became pleased with feeling, the beautiful lady of the inner apartments, in leisure times.)
