etasmínneva kāle tu jaratkārurmahātapāḥ। cacāra pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ yatrasāyaṅgṛho muniḥ ॥1-41-1॥
[एतस्मिन् (etasmín) - in this; एव (eva) - only; काले (kāle) - time; तु (tu) - but; जरत्कारुः (jaratkāruḥ) - Jaratkaru; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; चचार (cacāra) - wandered; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnāṃ) - entire; यत्र (yatra) - where; सायङ्गृहः (sāyaṅgṛhaḥ) - evening abode; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage;]
(In this very time, Jaratkaru, the great ascetic, wandered the entire earth where the sage had his evening abode.)

चरन्दीक्षां महातेजा दुश्चरामकृतात्मभिः। तीर्थेष्वाप्लवनं कुर्वन्पुण्येषु विचचार ह ॥१-४१-२॥
carandīkṣāṃ mahātejā duścarāmakṛtātmabhiḥ। tīrtheṣvāplavanaṃ kurvanpuṇyeṣu vicacāra ha ॥1-41-2॥

(Wandering initiation greatly powerful difficult to perform by those who have not subdued their selves in holy places bathing performing in sacred wandered indeed.)

वायुभक्षो निराहारः शुष्यन्नहरहर्मुनिः। स ददर्श पितृन्गर्ते लम्बमानानधोमुखान् ॥१-४१-३॥
vāyubhakṣo nirāhāraḥ śuṣyannaharaharmuniḥ। sa dadarśa pitṝn garte lambamānān adhomukhān ॥1-41-3॥
[वायुभक्षः (vāyubhakṣaḥ) - air-eater; निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - without food; शुष्यन् (śuṣyan) - drying; अहरहम् (aharaham) - day by day; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; सः (saḥ) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; गर्ते (garte) - in the pit; लम्बमानान् (lambamānān) - hanging; अधोमुखान् (adhomukhān) - downward facing;]
(The air-eater, without food, drying day by day, the sage saw the ancestors hanging downward facing in the pit.)
The sage, who survived on air and abstained from food, saw his ancestors hanging upside down in the pit, drying up day by day.
एकतन्त्ववशिष्टं वै वीरणस्तम्बमाश्रितान्। तं च तन्तुं शनैराखुमाददानं बिलाश्रयम् ॥१-४१-४॥
ekatantvavaśiṣṭaṃ vai vīraṇastambamāśritān। taṃ ca tantuṃ śanairākhumādadānaṃ bilāśrayam ॥1-41-4॥

(One thread indeed remaining, residing in a clump of grass, that thread slowly taken by a mouse dwelling in a hole.)

निराहारान्कृशान्दीनान्गर्तेऽऽर्तांस्त्राणमिच्छतः। उपसृत्य स तान्दीनान्दीनरूपोऽभ्यभाषत ॥१-४१-५॥
nirāhārān kṛśān dīnān garte''rtāṃs trāṇam icchataḥ। upasṛtya sa tān dīnān dīnarūpo'bhyabhāṣata ॥1-41-5॥

के भवन्तोऽवलम्बन्ते वीरणस्तम्बमाश्रिताः। दुर्बलं खादितैर्मूलैराखुना बिलवासिना ॥१-४१-६॥

वीरणस्तम्बके मूलं यदप्येकमिह स्थितम्। तदप्ययं शनैराखुरादत्ते दशनैः शितैः ॥१-४१-७॥
vīraṇastambake mūlaṃ yadapyekamiha sthitam। tadapyayaṃ śanairākhurādatte daśanaiḥ śitaiḥ ॥1-41-7॥

(Although the root of the grass clump is situated here as one, this rat slowly takes it with sharp teeth.)

छेत्स्यतेऽल्पावशिष्टत्वादेतदप्यचिरादिव। ततः स्थ पतितारोऽत्र गर्ते अस्मिन्नधोमुखाः ॥१-४१-८॥

(Will be cut off due to being little left, this also soon. Then you are fallen ones here in the pit in this face downwards.)

ततो मे दुःखमुत्पन्नं दृष्ट्वा युष्मानधोमुखान्। कृच्छ्रामापदमापन्नान्प्रियं किं करवाणि वः ॥१-४१-९॥
tato me duḥkhamutpannaṃ dṛṣṭvā yuṣmānadhomukhān। kṛcchrāmāpadamāpannānpriyaṃ kiṃ karavāṇi vaḥ ॥1-41-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - my; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; उत्पन्नम् (utpannam) - arisen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; युष्मान् (yuṣmān) - you; अधोमुखान् (adhomukhān) - downcast; कृच्छ्राम् (kṛcchrām) - difficult; आपदम् (āpadaṃ) - situation; आपन्नान् (āpannān) - fallen into; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; किं (kiṃ) - what; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(Then my sorrow arose seeing you downcast, fallen into a difficult situation, dear, what shall I do for you?)
Then, seeing you all with downcast faces, having fallen into a difficult situation, my dear ones, what can I do for you?
तपसोऽस्य चतुर्थेन तृतीयेनापि वा पुनः। अर्धेन वापि निस्तर्तुमापदं ब्रूत माचिरम् ॥१-४१-१०॥
tapasō'sya caturthēna tṛtīyēnāpi vā punaḥ। ardhēna vāpi nistartumāpadaṁ brūta māciram ॥1-41-10॥
[तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; अस्य (asya) - his; चतुर्थेन (caturthēna) - by a quarter; तृतीयेन (tṛtīyēna) - by a third; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अर्धेन (ardhēna) - by half; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; निस्तर्तुम् (nistartum) - to overcome; आपदं (āpadaṁ) - difficulty; ब्रूत (brūta) - tell; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay;]
(By a quarter of his penance, or by a third, or even by half, tell me quickly how to overcome the difficulty.)

अथवापि समग्रेण तरन्तु तपसा मम। भवन्तः सर्व एवास्मात्काममेवं विधीयताम् ॥१-४१-११॥
athavāpi samagreṇa tarantu tapasā mama। bhavantaḥ sarva evāsmātkāmamevaṃ vidhīyatām ॥1-41-11॥
[अथवा (athavā) - or; अपि (api) - also; समग्रेण (samagreṇa) - completely; तरन्तु (tarantu) - cross; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; मम (mama) - my; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - be arranged;]
(Or also, completely cross by penance my you all indeed from this desire thus be arranged.)
Alternatively, you all may completely overcome this desire through penance, and let it be arranged as such.

ऋद्धो भवान्ब्रह्मचारी यो नस्त्रातुमिहेच्छति। न तु विप्राग्र्य तपसा शक्यमेतद्व्यपोहितुम् ॥१-४१-१२॥
ṛddho bhavān brahmacārī yo nas trātum ihecchati। na tu viprāgrya tapasā śakyam etad vyapohitum ॥1-41-12॥
[ऋद्धः (ṛddhaḥ) - prosperous; भवान् (bhavān) - you; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; यः (yaḥ) - who; नः (naḥ) - us; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; इह (iha) - here; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; विप्राग्र्य (viprāgrya) - best of the twice-born; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; एतत् (etat) - this; व्यपोहितुम् (vyapohitum) - to remove;]
(Prosperous you, celibate, who desires to protect us here. But, O best of the twice-born, this cannot be removed by penance.)
You, who are prosperous and a celibate, wish to protect us here. However, O esteemed sage, this cannot be resolved through penance.
अस्ति नस्तात तपसः फलं प्रवदतां वर। सन्तानप्रक्षयाद्ब्रह्मन्पतामो निरयेऽशुचौ ॥१-४१-१३॥
asti nastāta tapasaḥ phalaṃ pravadatāṃ vara। santānaprakṣayādbrahmanpatāmo niraye'śucau ॥1-41-13॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; नः (naḥ) - our; तात (tāta) - dear; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; प्रवदतां (pravadatāṃ) - of those who speak; वर (vara) - best; सन्तानप्रक्षयात् (santānaprakṣayāt) - due to the destruction of progeny; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; पतामः (patāmaḥ) - we fall; निरये (niraye) - into hell; अशुचौ (aśucau) - impure;]
(There is, dear, the fruit of our penance, O best of those who speak. Due to the destruction of progeny, O Brahman, we fall into impure hell.)
Dear, there is indeed the fruit of our penance, O esteemed speaker. Due to the loss of progeny, O Brahman, we descend into an impure hell.
लम्बतामिह नस्तात न ज्ञानं प्रतिभाति वै। येन त्वां नाभिजानीमो लोके विख्यातपौरुषम् ॥१-४१-१४॥
lambatāmiha nastāta na jñānaṃ pratibhāti vai| yena tvāṃ nābhijānīmo loke vikhyātapauruṣam ॥1-41-14॥
[लम्बताम् (lambatām) - let it be prolonged; इह (iha) - here; नः (naḥ) - our; तात (tāta) - father; न (na) - not; ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; वै (vai) - indeed; येन (yena) - by which; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; न (na) - not; अभिजानीमः (abhijānīmaḥ) - we recognize; लोके (loke) - in the world; विख्यातपौरुषम् (vikhyātapauruṣam) - famous for valor;]
(Let it be prolonged here, our father, knowledge does not indeed appear by which we do not recognize you, famous for valor in the world.)
Let our stay here be prolonged, father, for we do not recognize you, who are renowned for valor in the world.
ऋद्धो भवान्महाभागो यो नः शोच्यान्सुदुःखितान्। शोचस्युपेत्य कारुण्याच्छृणु ये वै वयं द्विज ॥१-४१-१५॥

(Prosperous you, fortunate one, who grieves for us, to be pitied, very miserable, having approached out of compassion, hear who indeed we are, O Brahmin.)
O fortunate one, you are prosperous and grieve for us who are very miserable and to be pitied. Having approached us out of compassion, hear who we indeed are, O Brahmin.
यायावरा नाम वयमृषयः संशितव्रताः। लोकात्पुण्यादिह भ्रष्टाः सन्तानप्रक्षयाद्विभो ॥१-४१-१६॥
yāyāvarā nāma vayamṛṣayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ। lokātpuṇyādiha bhraṣṭāḥ santānaprakṣayādvibho ॥1-41-16॥
[यायावरा (yāyāvarā) - wanderers; नाम (nāma) - by name; वयम् (vayam) - we; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - of firm vows; लोकात् (lokāt) - from the world; पुण्यात् (puṇyāt) - from virtue; इह (iha) - here; भ्रष्टाः (bhraṣṭāḥ) - fallen; सन्तानप्रक्षयात् (santānaprakṣayāt) - due to the destruction of progeny; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Wanderers by name, we are sages of firm vows, fallen here from the world of virtue due to the destruction of progeny, O lord.)
We, the sages known as wanderers with firm vows, have fallen from the virtuous world due to the loss of progeny, O lord.
प्रनष्टं नस्तपः पुण्यं न हि नस्तन्तुरस्ति वै। अस्ति त्वेकोऽद्य नस्तन्तुः सोऽपि नास्ति यथा तथा ॥१-४१-१७॥
pranaṣṭaṃ nastapaḥ puṇyaṃ na hi nastanturasti vai। asti tvekoadya nastantuḥ so'pi nāsti yathā tathā ॥1-41-17॥
[प्रनष्टं (pranaṣṭam) - destroyed; नः (naḥ) - our; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - virtue; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; तन्तुः (tantuḥ) - lineage; अस्ति (asti) - is; वै (vai) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - is; त्वा (tvā) - you; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; अद्य (adya) - today; नः (naḥ) - our; तन्तुः (tantuḥ) - lineage; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; यथा (yathā) - as; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Our penance and virtue are destroyed; indeed, our lineage does not exist. Today, there is one lineage of ours, and he also does not exist as such.)

(He, indeed, of little fortune, a relative of those with little fortune, known as Jaratkaru in our family, is an expert in Vedas and Vedangas, self-controlled, a great soul, of good vows, and a great ascetic.)

(By him indeed, due to greed for penance, we were brought to difficulty. He has no wife, son, or relative at all.)

tasmāllambāmahe garte naṣṭasañjñā hyanāthavat. sa vaktavyastvayā dṛṣṭvā asmākaṃ nāthavattayā ॥1-41-20॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; लम्बामहे (lambāmahe) - we hang; गर्ते (garte) - in the pit; नष्टसञ्ज्ञाः (naṣṭasañjñāḥ) - unconscious; हि (hi) - indeed; अनाथवत् (anāthavat) - like orphans; सः (saḥ) - he; वक्तव्यः (vaktavyaḥ) - must be told; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; नाथवत्तया (nāthavattayā) - with protection;]
(Therefore, we hang in the pit, unconscious indeed like orphans. He must be told by you, having seen our protection.)

(Your fathers are hanging in the pit, miserable and downward-faced. "Please make wives," thus, "procreate," thus, and O master. Indeed, you are the only one remaining of our family line, O ascetic sage.)
Your ancestors are suffering in the pit, looking miserable and downward. They urge you to marry and procreate to continue the family line, as you are the only one left, O revered sage.
यं तु पश्यसि नो ब्रह्मन्वीरणस्तम्बमाश्रितान्। एषोऽस्माकं कुलस्तम्ब आसीत्स्वकुलवर्धनः ॥१-४१-२२॥

यानि पश्यसि वै ब्रह्मन्मूलानीहास्य वीरुधः। एते नस्तन्तवस्तात कालेन परिभक्षिताः ॥१-४१-२३॥

यत्त्वेतत्पश्यसि ब्रह्मन्मूलमस्यार्धभक्षितम्। तत्र लम्बामहे सर्वे सोऽप्येकस्तप आस्थितः ॥१-४१-२४॥

(Whom you see, O Brahman, this is time of great strength. He slowly destroys that slow, engaged in austerity, piercing Jaratkaru, desirous of austerity, slow-minded, unconscious.)

तपो वाप्यथवा यज्ञो यच्चान्यत्पावनं महत्। तत्सर्वं न समं तात सन्तत्येति सतां मतम् ॥१-४१-२८॥
tapo vāpyathavā yajño yaccānyatpāvanaṃ mahat| tatsarvaṃ na samaṃ tāta santatyeti satāṃ matam ॥1-41-28॥

(Austerity or also sacrifice or which and other purifying great; that all not equal dear to continuity of the good opinion.)
Austerity, sacrifice, or any other great purifying act is not considered equal to continuity, dear one, according to the opinion of the wise.
स तात दृष्ट्वा ब्रूयास्त्वं जरत्कारुं तपस्विनम्। यथादृष्टमिदं चास्मै त्वयाख्येयमशेषतः ॥१-४१-२९॥
sa tāta dṛṣṭvā brūyāstvaṃ jaratkāruṃ tapasvinam। yathādṛṣṭamidaṃ cāsmai tvayākhyeyamaśeṣataḥ ॥1-41-29॥
[स (sa) - he; तात (tāta) - father; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ब्रूयाः (brūyāḥ) - you should tell; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; जरत्कारुं (jaratkāruṃ) - Jaratkaru; तपस्विनम् (tapasvinam) - ascetic; यथा (yathā) - as; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आख्येयम् (ākhyeyam) - should be told; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - completely;]
(He, O father, having seen, you should tell Jaratkaru, the ascetic, as seen, this and to him by you should be told completely.)
O father, after seeing, you should tell the ascetic Jaratkaru everything you have seen, completely and without omission.
यथा दारान्प्रकुर्यात्स पुत्रांश्चोत्पादयेद्यथा। तथा ब्रह्मंस्त्वया वाच्यः सोऽस्माकं नाथवत्तया ॥१-४१-३०॥
yathā dārān prakuryāt sa putrāṁś ca utpādayet yathā। tathā brahman tvayā vācyaḥ saḥ asmākaṁ nāthavat tayā ॥1-41-30॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; दारान् (dārān) - wives; प्रकुर्यात् (prakuryāt) - should make; सः (saḥ) - he; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; उत्पादयेत् (utpādayet) - should produce; यथा (yathā) - as; तथा (tathā) - so; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should be spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; नाथवत् (nāthavat) - like a protector; तया (tayā) - by her;]
(As one should make wives and produce sons, so, O Brahman, he should be spoken of by you as our protector by her.)
Just as one should establish a family by marrying and having children, similarly, O Brahman, you should refer to him as our protector through her.
